    14 arrested in gambling conspiracy

Officials say men sold illegal, bogus sports betting info.

    Published by news-press.com on April 9, 2004

Authorities arrested 14 men Thursday in connection with a Fort Myers-based sports handicapping business that investigators say scammed millions from gamblers across the country.

The men — who are from Fort Myers, Estero and Cape Coral — face federal charges of conspiracy to transmit wagering information by interstate and foreign wire and to operate an illegal gambling enterprise. If convicted, they face up to five years in prison and a fine of $250,000.

“This is the culmination of efforts of local and federal law enforcement agencies that have cooperated and shared information and successfully arrested in one day an entire illegal organization,” said Chief Assistant U.S. Attorney Doug Molloy.

Investigators arrested the men at their homes, businesses and even one as he got off a plane from Houston at Southwest Florida International Airport.

According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, the men are accused of getting money for gambling advice and referring clients to offshore gambling casinos and receiving referral fees back from those casinos.

Authorities say they ran the scam under three different businesses — Player’s Edge Inc., which was operated by John R. Rodney Jr., 41, from 1993 to 2003; National Sports Consultants Inc., which was started by Robert Robitzek, 40, and Joseph DiLorenzo, 43, in 2003; and Nationwide Sports Inc., which was started by Nicholas DelNegro, 27, in 2002.

They worked out of rental space at 15881 S. Tamiami Trail in Fort Myers, according to authorities.

“Everybody wants them to go to jail,” said David Harter, 38, a Kansas City engineer who lost $15,000.

Harter created a Web site last month in an effort to find other victims who may want to join a class-action lawsuit.

“I didn’t know much about gambling,” he said. “They made it look more like an investment.”

The arrests come almost four months after a California man settled a federal lawsuit against some of the businesses after the man lost more than $2 million in their dealings.

According to the suit filed by Timothy Edwin Bronkhurst, the businesses lured their clients through radio ads with a toll-free number in major cities, such as San Diego, Phoenix and Milwaukee. They claimed to have “inside information” that would lead to big money for gamblers. However, the defendants, according to the suit, didn’t have an inside track and were “taking their best guesses.”

They cashed in on “package fees” for the inside information and alleged kickbacks from those who took the bets.

“They really nailed me to the wall, these guys,” Bronkhurst, 49, said in December. “It’s a lesson I’ll take with me to the grave.”

Let the buyer beware! As much as I despise the service, I don't feel any real sympathy for those dumb enough to believe and pay for the bs claims made by these guys.

Savage I agree when its someone who knows of their dealings but obviously someone was duped into believing it was a form of investing.

Many years ago I was taken for a ride by some people I didnt even know as I believed they owned some crystal ball or something and I needed to pay for their information. Until someone gets familiar with the GAMING SCENE they can be easily fooled and taken.

I for one am happy to see these guys get busted and hopefully this opens up a PANDORA'S BOX for these SCAMMERS and they start getting nailed one after the next!

          PEACE

Watch the trickle affect at its best fellas. This will not be the last you hear about this company and there will be many many more to come. One down several to go!!

Now since something has actually happened legally with these guys, maybe the radio stations will wise up and pull all this bull from its airwaves?? I mean the radio station is just as much at fault as the service is aren't they in stealing our money? I may be wrong but they are the ones who allow the crap on the radio.

                  Mick.

Pimp- perhaps one of the reasons I feel as I do is that I have been doing this for 30+ years, and with age(59) comes wisdom.
Perhaps if I was in my early 20's and just starting out, perhaps I might be gullible enough to believe what someone said.

Im only 26 and been in some form of gambling since I was 10 years old.............when I was 17 I got taken by some guys in Vegas who were taking my winnings (he told me to start betting DIMES and I listened and I won my first 6 plays so I thought he was NOSTRDAMUS) next thing I know he told me to send him 3500 for the entire NBA Season and w/o knowing I sent it thinking he was gonna make me RICH.............next thing I know he started asking for more money for the more exclusive plays and again........even though I was uncomfortable doing it I did it. Next thing I know he went cold and I lost all my profits of about 7K and he had about 6K of my money and I was BROKE and the guy wanted nothing to do with me. I WAS TAKEN.

                          PEACE

I was taken quite a few years ago by a scamdicapper. I had used my credit card (stupid idea) to send a him cash. After he ripped me off, I called up my credit card company and reported bad business transaction. They reversed the transaction.

I can list quite a few out there that are not monitored to be very weiry of. These guys mostly pop out around football season.

Here is one of their famous quotes:

"I'll give you this game absoutley free no questions asked"

Funny thing is, these jerks don't shit about sports.

Great stories guys;I guess just about everyone who posts here and/or gambles regularly has learned sometime in their life(usually when they start) that if something sounds too good to be true, then well, you know the rest of it.
