  • MEMPHIS at the NEW YORK KNICKS 3/24

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Tonight at Madison Square Garden, N.Y.,N.Y., the NEW YORK KNICKS will host the MEMPHIS GRIZZLIES in a game that has playoff implications for both teams.
James Posey of the GRIZZLIES said yesterday,"We are playing good basketball, but we aren't letting things go to our heads. We'll see what position we put ourselves in." I believe I agree with him. They have won 10 of their last 12 contests, and are the NBA's best at 19-5 since Feb. 1.
Their last game, last night hosting TORONTO, was not really much of a contest, seeing TORONTO trail by double digits through most of the one-sided affair. Two days before that they hosted INDIANA, who many people feel is the best team in the NBA, and systematically won 99-95. INDIANA led in that game 90-85 with less than 5 minutes to go, only to see MEMPHIS put down the ****** and take the lead 93-90 with 2 minutes and a couple ticks on the clock. The game before that they hosted SEATTLE, a team that has beaten them 30 of the last 35 meetings, and had the lead 80-76 with 5:37 remaining, only to end up short of the mark 97-94 at game's end. They have won the last two times when visiting NY.
In the first meeting of the two this year in Dec. N.Y. prevailed 98-94 at The Pyramid in Memphis. NEW YORK had Kieth Van Horn then, and now they have Tim Thomas(with a groin strain) who is day to day. Memphis was down by 19 at one point in that game. Alan Houston had 23 of NEW YORK'S points, but is also day to day with bruised quadriceps tonight. N.Y. led 54-43 at the break, and 76-67 at the end of 3. Frank Williams who is no longer on the roster played a big part in the N.Y. win. Both teams had two days rest before the contest.
Tonight, MEMPHIS enters on no rest after that easy game against TORONTO, and NEW YORK on 1 days rest after defeating ATLANTA 96-84.
MEMPHIS is 8-8 this year in games they entered with no rest, not counting the second game of the season. They are 3-3 on the road after a home game on no rest.
What is interesting, is what Hubie Brown the MEMPHIS coach said after the Dec. meeting. He said, "If you look at the final score, it's only a 4 point game, but we all know they dominated the game." What a hell of a thing to say after your team just played their hearts out trying to win, unless it is true and the team knew it.
MEMPHIS is riding a high, and I think their bubble breaks tonight. NEW YORK, with all the injuries and new faces, gets the cover. Talk about going out on a limb!!!!
