        I disagree, but here it is.

        While Denver’s Mike Shanahan still treats games against the Raiders like the Super Bowl (he’s 12-2 straight up and 10-4 ATS against them), it’s tough to lay many points in this rivalry. Since 1984, 18 of 36 meetings between these teams have been decided by 3 points or less (compared to 23% for all games in the NFL). And, 24 of the 36 games have been decided by 6 points or less. As a result, underdogs of 3 points or more in this series are 18-9-1 ATS and Shanahan, despite his great overall record against the Raiders, is just 3-3 ATS laying 3 points or more in this series. The Raiders have gone from the league’s best team to a .500 team in a span of 4 weeks, all of which resulted in losses. However, Oakland is still a good team. The Raiders have averaged 6.1 yards per play this season against teams that allow 5.5 yppl, and they’ve allowed 5.4 yppl to teams that average 5.5 yppl on offense. The Raiders’ offense will be up against a very good Denver defense that has yielded just 4.7 yppl to teams that average 5.5 yppl on offense, and the Broncos have held other good offensive teams (St. Louis, San Francisco, Buffalo, and Kansas City) to an average of just 296 total yards on 4.9 yppl (those teams combine to average 5.8 yppl on offense for the season), so they are certainly capable of containing the Raiders’ attack. The Raiders’ defense is just average for the season, but the return of All-Pro CB Charles Woodson makes them a better than average unit and they’ve only allowed 5.0 yppl in their last 3 games against San Diego, Kansas City and San Francisco, who combine to average 5.6 yppl on offense for the season. Denver’s offense is only a bit better than average (5.5 yppl against teams that allow 5.4 yppl), so Oakland’s defense certainly can keep them in this game if the offense struggles against Denver’s good defense. Overall, my math model does favor Denver by 6 points in this game, but the series history suggests a close game and Denver qualifies in a negative 18-49 ATS home favorite off a bye angle. I’ll lean a bit with Oakland plus the points.
