The return of Shaquille O’Neal, without Malone and Bryant, is not enough to make the Lakers a great team and they remain overrated with their current lineup. In 5 games this season with O’Neal but without Malone and Bryant the Lakers have produced the following results – a 13 point home loss to Minnesota, a 1 point win at Toronto in a pick’em game, an overtime win at Cleveland as a 3 point favorite, a 23 point loss at Philly, and a 2 point win as a 4 ½ point favorite at Orlando in their last game. So, in those 5 games they played better than expectations just once and that spread win was by just 1 point in their 1 point win at Toronto (they also covered at Cleveland, but needed overtime to do it). The Lakers have played at a level about 3 points worse than an average team in those 5 games with their current lineup, but I actually calculate them at being +1.1 (1.1 points better than an average team) with their current available personnel. Miami, however, is only 2 points worse than average with Dwayne Wade back in the lineup and home court value is 3.4 points when the road team is rested. That all adds up to Miami being favored by 0.3 points, which doesn’t take into account how poorly the Lakers have played on the road this season (6-17 ATS not including their home road game against the Clippers). My home-road ratings favor Miami by 1 ½ points in this game and I’d gladly take 3 points or more with Miami given the Lakers’ horrid 12-45 ATS mark as a road favorite of 3 points or more after a win when facing a team with a win percentage of greater than .267 (not including games with the Clippers). The Lakers are just 3-20 ATS in that role more recently, including 0-7 ATS this season. The Heat would have a 61% chance of covering at +3 points based on line value alone – without the team trend factored in – and I’ll take 3 points or more with Miami in a 2-Star Best Bet and will consider the Heat a Strong Opinion if they remain an underdog of less than 3 points.

L.A. Clippers (+9) 97 MINNESOTA 101 The Timberwolves have not been as good at home this season as they’ve been on the road (16-10 ATS on the road and just 11-13 ATS at home) and their Sunday home loss to Memphis is not a good omen for them tonight. Minnesota qualifies in a negative 36-77-3 ATS situation that plays against big home favorites that lost as a home favorite in their last game and my ratings favor the Timberwolves by 9 points – so the line is fair. With the situation included, the Clippers have a solid 57% chance of covering at +9 points, but that’s not quite high enough for me to make them a Best Bet.
