    AMERICAN ATHLETIC CONFERENCE (AAC)

-- Temple pulled off the minor upset of Memphis, 30-28. While the Owls are 0-2 ATS in two road games, they're a perfect 4-0 ATS at home. ... South Florida pulled off another minor upset in the AAC, topping independent BYU by a 27-23 margin as 4.5-point underdogs. The Bulls evened their record at 3-3 SU, and more importantly they're 4-1 ATS over the past five. The total pushed in this one, and the 'over' is 3-0-1 across the past four for the Bulls. ... Tulsa gave SMU (on a bye this week) a scare in Dallas last week, but that near-miss most have taken a lot of out of them. Navy rolled the Golden Hurricanes by a 45-17 margin. ... Tulane roughed up Connecticut by a 49-7 score, as the Green Wave won and covered their fourth consecutive outing.

    ATLANTIC COAST CONFERENCE (ACC)

-- Virginia took a loss at Miami-Florida by a 17-9 score, underdogs despite holding a ranking. The Hurricanes are now 3-3 SU/ATS with the total 3-3, which is about as inconsistent and hard to figure as it gets. ... Rumors of the death of Clemson was greatly exaggerated, or something like that. They waffled Florida State by a 45-14 score as 26.5-point favorites. The total (61) was a push. It appears that two-week rest thanks to a bye paid off. For the Seminoles, they're 3-3 SU and 2-3-1 ATS with the 'under' cashing in each of their past three outings. ... Duke rebounded against ACC punching bag Georgia Tech, 41-23. The Blue Devils are now 4-1 SU/ATS across the past five outings while the 'over' has hit in each game. ... Hopefully you didn't hold an 'under' ticket in Louisville-Wake Forest. That was a wild one, ending with the Cardinals dealing the Demon Deacons their first loss, 62-59. The 'under' was 3-0 in the past three for Wake before this crazy game.

    BIG TEN

-- Michigan fired out to a big lead at Illinois, leading 28-7 at halftime. However, the Illini put up a fight to close to within 35-25 with 8:57 to go in regulation before the Wolverines notched a touchdown for the final score. ... Indiana smacked Rutgers around by a 35-0 score, covering a 27.5-point number as the 'under' cashed. The Hoosiers have now covered three in a row, and they're a respectable 3-1 SU/ATS in four games at 'The Rock'. ... Minnesota welcomed Nebraska in raw, chilly conditions with a rain/snow mix in the Twin Cities. QB Adrian Martinez (knee) was out for the Cornhuskers, too, while the Gophers ran all over. The Huskers slipped to 4-3 SU and 1-6 ATS, with the 'under' hitting in three in a row, and five of seven. For Minnesota, they're now bowl eligible already, going 6-0 SU. After opening 0-2-1 ATS, they have rattled off three straight covers, too. ... Wisconsin posted their fourth shutout of the season, topping Michigan State 38-0. The Badgers are 6-0 SU/5-1 ATS with the 'under' hitting in each of the past three for the Badgers.

    BIG 12

-- There were just three games in the conference, including the neutral-site Red River rivalry game between Oklahoma-Texas. As usual this rivalry game didn't disappoint, as the Sooners held off the Longhorns 34-27. Texas has covered in back-to-back games for the first time this season, slipping to 4-2 SU/ATS with the 'over' also 4-2 after this under result. ... Baylor held off Texas Tech 33-30 in overtime. The Bears are a surprising 6-0 SU, but 3-3 ATS, with the over/under splitting 3-3 as well. The 'over' is 3-0 in the past three for the Red Raiders. ... Iowa State went to West Virginia and hammered the Mountaineers, 38-14. The Cyclones improved to 4-1 ATS across the past five outings.

    CONFERENCE USA

-- Florida Atlantic won a lower-scoring 28-13 game against Middle Tennessee, 28-13, exacting a little revenge after a loss in Murfreesboro last season. The Owls have rattled off four straight wins, and they're also 4-2 ATS, too. ... Western Kentucky surprised Army 17-8, and the Hilltoppers have now won and covered three in a row with the 'under' hitting in each contest. They have averaged just 19.0 PPG while allowing 8.0 PPG during the three-game span. ... Louisiana Tech stepped out of conference and clubbed Massachusetts, 69-21. The Bulldogs have rattled off five consecutive victories since losing at Texas to open the season, and they have covered three of the past four. ... UAB routed Texas-San Antonio by a 33-13 count, picking up their fifth win in six tries while improving to 4-1 ATS over the past five. They have scored 31 or more points in four of the past five, too.

    MID-AMERICAN (MAC)

-- Toledo was supposed to mow over rival Bowling Green, but a funny thing happened at Doyt Perry Stadium. The 26.5-point underdog Falcons rolled to a 20-7 victory over the Rockets, picking up just their second win in six tries, and their first against an FBS opponent. The 'under' is 5-1 in six outings for the Falcons this season. ... Kent State won the 'Wagon Wheel' rivalry game against Akron, 26-3. The Golden Flashes are 3-3 SU/ATS, but this was their first road victory and cover in four road tries. Of course, this was their first non-Power 5 opponent away from home, too. The Zips, meanwhile, are a dismal 0-6 SU/ATS. ... Ball State left Rynearson Stadium at Eastern Michigan with a 29-23 victory in tow. EMU slipped to 3-3 SU/2-4 ATS, and they have failed to cover in three in a row. ... Western Michigan romped Miami-Ohio by a 38-16 score as the 'under' just came in. The Broncos have alternated wins and losses in each of their seven games so far, and they have also alternated covers and non-covers. If the pattern continues, a loss and non-cover is coming at EMU next week.

    MOUNTAIN WEST

-- Boise State lost freshman QB Hank Bachmeier (lower body) against Hawaii, but they continued to roll along as the Group of Five favorite. They topped the Rainbow Warriors, 59-37. Boise State is now 6-0 SU and 4-1-1 ATS with the over/under splitting 3-3. They'll head to BYU next week. ... UNLV surprised Vanderbilt by a 34-10 score, covering as 15 1/2-point favorites. The Rebels snapped a four-game losing streak while picking up their first win against an FBS opponent this season, and they're now 2-1 ATS in three road outings. The 'under' is 4-1 across the past five for UNLV, too. ... San Jose State slipped 41-38 at Nevada, as they're now 3-3 SU while going 3-0-1 ATS across thye past four. ... San Diego State moved to 5-1 SU/4-2 ATS with a 26-22 slugfest against Wyoming. The Aztecs have covered four of the past five. The 'over' in their game on Saturday snapped a 5-0 'under' streak to start the season.

    PAC-12

-- USC put up a good fight on the road against Notre Dame, falling 30-27 but covering the 10.5-point number. The Trojans have dropped three of the past four, and they have alternated covers and non-covers in all six outings. The 'under' is also 4-0 in the past four games heading into next week's game at home against Arizona. ... As far as the Wildcats are concerned, they were roughed up 51-27 by Washington. Arizona had their four-game win streak snapped while slipping to 2-3-1 ATS. The Huskies improved to 5-2 SU/ATS, rebounding after their loss at Stanford last week. ... Oregon spanked Colorado 45-3, as Buffaloes QB Steven Montez tossed four interceptions to help out the Ducks. UO has won five in a row since losing to Auburn in the opener, and they're the only hope of the Pac-12. The 'under' has cashed in four in a row. ... Washington State dropped a 38-34 game at Arizona State, and the Cougars have dropped three in a row. That 67-63 loss to UCLA has really taken a lot out of the Cougs. They are now 0-3 SU in the conference, and they have failed to cover five in a row.

    SOUTHEASTERN (SEC)

-- Florida went toe-to-toe with LSU into the second half, tied 28-28. However, the Bayou Bengals pulled away late for the 42-28 win and push at most shops. The 'over' is now 5-1 in the six games for LSU. ... The other big game of the day was in Athens, as South Carolina shocked the world with a 20-17 win in double-overtime against Georgia. The Bulldogs went from national title contenders to facing Florida on Nov. 2 in Jacksonville in an elimination game in the SEC East race. This loss might still not quite eliminate them from the playoffs, but it was a tough blow. ... Tennessee won at home, topping MississippiState, 20-10 as the 'under' easily hit. It was their first win in four tries at home against an FBS opponent, and just their second cover in six outings. ... Missouri topped Mississippi in a surprisingly high-scoring battle, as the Tigers have won five in a row. They just missed the cover, snapping a 4-0 ATS run.

    SUN BELT

-- Georgia State went on the road and topped Coastal Carolina 31-21. as slight underdogs. The Panthers are 4-2 SU and 3-1-2 ATS overall, as they inch closer to bowl eligibility. ... Appalachian State won 17-7 in a surprisingly low-scoring game at Louisiana-Lafayette, covering for the third straight game while staying a perfect 5-0 SU and keeping their Group of Five hopes alive.
    Bad Beats
-- The worst bad beat of the weekend happened with the total in Waco. Texas Tech scored a touchdown to go ahead 20-17 with 1:37 to go, with a total of 59. Baylor forced overtime with a field goal with no time remaining in regulation. Overtime was a killer, as both teams exchanged touchdowns in the first OT to make it 27-27. The Red Raiders booted a field goal to make it 30-27. The under could still come through with a defensive stop, but...well, you know. Baylor scored the game-winning TD, making it 33-30, flipping the 'under' to an undeserved 'over'.

-- It might have been a bit early for a bad beat at 5:43, but if you have Florida you were on the right side most of the evening. Most shops closed this game at 14, so it ended a push. LSU scored a 54-yard TD pass with 5:43 to go up 42-28 after a seesaw battle most of the night. To be honest, there weren't a ton of bad beat situations in this week, which is nice for a change.

-- Marshall scored a touchdown with 3:55 to go, flipping an under to an over against Old Dominion. Again, it was just an unfortunate loss, but not a textbook bad beat, but it still stings nonetheless.

                Hot & Not Report - Week 8
                Matt Blunt

                Week of October 14th

There were some strong results if you followed last week's piece that touched on NFL divisional games, as the majority of those trends held true in Week 6.

Road teams managed to sweep the board against the spread with Carolina, Cincinnati and San Francisco all cashing tickets on Sunday, with the Lions the only remaining team in that spot tonight on MNF. Carolina dominated Tampa Bay from start to finish, the Bengals were able to sneak through the back door against Baltimore, and San Francisco brought their best stuff to LA in beating the Rams in a game that many viewed as a measuring stick for the now 5-0 SU 49ers.

At the same time, NFL division games staying 'under' the number posted a 2-1 record as well on Sunday, with only the Panthers/Bucs game over in London sailing 'over' the number. Given the different circumstances of that game with no true home field – and London games tendency to go over as the NFL wants to make sure they put on a show over there – on paper that was the easiest division game to avoid going 'under' on the Week 6 card, especially with it being the first divisional rematch game of the year and the flip-flop theory seemingly alive and well in that regard again. Hindsight is always 20-20 though, but the good news is that had you played all three of those games you'd still have come out on top.

This week I'm taking a break from the pro game as there is one specific conference in college football that deserves noting. So I'd like to wish a happy Columbus Day to everyone - and a happy Thanksgiving to all you Canadians out there – as Columbus (the place), has a tie to this week's piece as we look at what's been going on in the Big 10.

                Who's Hot

Home teams in Big 10 games are 11-2 SU the past two weeks – 9-4 ATS in that span

It's been quite the 14 days for Big 10 teams that play in front of their adoring fans, as that SU run is pretty impressive. Home sides went 5-1 SU in conference play this past week, after going 6-1 SU in Week 6. And the 9-4 ATS record could have been a little better considering Penn State's 35-7 win over Purdue in Week 6 missed out on cashing an ATS ticket by the hook.

What makes a run like this intriguing from a betting perspective is the six Big 10 games we've got on the schedule this upcoming week. It all starts with those boys from Columbus, Ohio – the Ohio State Buckeyes – heading out on the road on Friday night to face a Northwestern team as heavy, heavy chalk. Ohio State is currently laying 27.5 points on the road for that game, and that's a lofty number for any road team to cover in today's game, let alone one going up against quite a run for home teams within the conference right now.

The Buckeyes aren't the only Big 10 team laying heavy chalk on the road either this week, as Wisconsin's spread is even bigger (-30.5) for their road trip to Illinois, and Minnesota is laying about four TD's for their contest at Rutgers. Given that the outright record of those three road teams – Ohio State, Wisconsin, and Minnesota – is 18-0 SU and their opponents sit at 2-13 SU, the numbers are somewhat warranted, but don't be surprise to see at least one of those heavy chalk visitors fail to cover their lofty spread.

On the flip side of that equation we've got two other Big 10 games where the home team is laying chalk, the most notable being Penn State has they host Michigan under the lights. The “September Warriors” in the Iowa Hawkeyes – every year Iowa beats up on cupcakes and Iowa State in September to earn a Top 25 ranking and promptly loses it in October when the competition level rises – are the other team laying chalk with Purdue coming to town. Indiana/Maryland is yet to have a line as of this writing but that's the other Big 10 game on the board this week.

But it's the Michigan/Penn State game that becomes highly intriguing given this run for Big 10 home teams, because Michigan is already a program that's been labelled as chokers once again this year. There is never any love for Harbaugh's squad in these type of big games, and with the number on Penn State currently climbing to approach double digits, it will be very interesting to see how this game shakes out. My initial reaction is that if there ever was a game to go against a run by the home teams like this, this would be it, but you can't deny there are plenty of good things (revenge, being undefeated, being at home) working for the Nittany Lions here as well.

Penn State backers will assuredly use this great run by Big 10 home teams as an additional layer of support for why the Nittany Lions are getting their support, but whether that ends up being the right side, we've got six days to debate it and then find out.

                Who's Not

Backing 'Overs' in Big 10 games the past two weeks – 2-11 O/U run against closing number

Similar to the great 'under' run in division games in the NFL that was touched on last week, this Big 10 conference games have been an 'under' bettors haven the past 14 days.

A run like that on low-scoring games is a combination of superior teams blowing out inferior teams, keeping those weaker foes off the scoreboard and then running out the clock with reserves, but also quality foes – especially on defense – doing battle with one another as well.

This week's card has a bit of both in that regard as we've got all those huge road favorites that were already discussed likely to fall on the former side of things if things go according to plan for them. However, if those home teams like Northwestern, Illinois, and Rutgers do end up keeping that trend going for home sides, you've got to figure they'd do so by putting up a few scores to put a scare in their opponent. It's what we saw from Illinois this past week when they hosted Michigan, and I wouldn't put it past them or Northwestern to have a similar type of effort this week.

Then again, Ohio State and Wisconsin could put the clamps down on defense rather early and cruise to blowout wins (as expected) that fail to see enough total points be put up to break this great run of 'unders.'

The Michigan/Penn State game is likely to see some initial 'under' love when totals come out as they fit the style of two elite defenses squaring off with points being at a premium. Both of those teams were on the right side of that style of game against Iowa the past two weeks, but the series history between the two schools is also on a 4-0 O/U run the past four years, and that includes the loser scoring 13 or fewer points in each of the past three meetings.

Yet, just like the initial feel of going against the home team trend for this game that I talked about earlier, this would be the one game where I'd strongly consider going against this 'under' trend as well. Obviously we've got to wait to see what number gets posted for this total, but it's definitely something to consider.

College football Week 8 opening odds: Early bettors peek at Penn State in clash with Michigan
                  Patrick Everson

College football rolls into Week 8, and in a change of pace, the biggest game is in the Big 10, rather than the Southeastern Conference. We check in on that matchup and three others, with insights from Matt Chaprales, head of content for PointsBet USA.

No. 16 Michigan Wolverines at No. 7 Penn State Nittany Lions (-7.5)

Penn State is undefeated and very much in early College Football Playoff discussion heading into this prime-time game in Happy Valley. The Nittany Lions (6-0 SU, 4-2 ATS) engaged in a defensive slog at Iowa in Week 7, coming away with a 17-12 victory as 3.5-point favorites.

Michigan cannot take another loss and reasonably expect to stay in the CFP conversation, thanks to its Week 4 blowout setback at Wisconsin. In Week 7, the Wolverines (5-1 SU, 2-4 ATS) blew almost all of a 28-0 lead at Illinois, with the score 28-25 early in the fourth quarter. Jim Harbaugh’s squad ultimately won 42-25, but fell short as 24.5-point faves.

“Early action has laid the 7.5 with Penn State, meaning the first move looks like it would be to 8,” Chaprales said. “Either way, with two high-profile teams battling under the lights, we’re anticipating good two-way action on this game.”

No. 12 Oregon Ducks at No. 23 Washington Huskies (+2.5)

At midseason, Oregon is the Pac-12’s best hope for a CFP bid, making this contest extremely important. The Ducks (5-1 SU, 3-3 ATS) bounced back from a season-opening neutral-site loss to Auburn by winning five in a row. In Week 7, Oregon hammered Colorado 45-3 laying 23.5 points at home.

Washington fully expected to be a CFP contender this year, but two outright losses as double-digit chalk – home against California and at Stanford – shattered those expectations. The Huskies (5-2 SU and ATS) followed the Stanford setback by ripping Arizona 51-27 laying 6 points on the road in Week 7.

“Oregon enters with the superior body of work, while Washington has already stumbled a few times in conference play, losing twice as big favorites,” Chaprales said. “Given that, we opened the Ducks as short road favorites and wouldn’t be surprised if this number moves further in their direction.”

That’s exactly what happened by Monday afternoon, with the line ticking up to Oregon -3.

No. 9 Florida Gators at South Carolina Gamecocks (Off)

Florida acquitted itself well in a very difficult two-seek stretch of SEC play, but couldn’t muster two victories. Following a Week 6 home win over Auburn, the Gators (6-1 SU, 4-3 ATS) went to Louisiana State as 14.5-point pups and were in it almost the entire way before bowing out 42-28.

South Carolina wouldn’t normally be worth a mention in this space, except that it’s coming off a monster upset and is 4-1 ATS in its last five games. The Gamecocks (3-3 SU, 4-2 ATS) were 20.5-point road ‘dogs against unbeaten Georgia, but came away with a 20-17 double-overtime victory.

Gamecocks QB Ryan Hilinski left in the third quarter of the big win, due to a knee sprain. It appears he will play this week, but it’s not yet certain.

“This game is currently off the board, pending the status of Hilinski,” Chaprales said. “Assuming he’s a go, it will be interesting to see how the public reacts to this team, on the heels of one of the biggest upsets in recent memory.”

If Hilinski indeed is cleared to play, Chaprales expects to open Florida around -6.

No. 18 Baylor Bears at Oklahoma State Cowboys (-3.5)

Oklahoma is rightly all the rage in the Big 12, but flying under the radar is an unbeaten Baylor team. The Bears (6-0 SU, 3-3 ATS) barely kept their perfect record intact in Week 7, edging Texas Tech 33-30 in double overtime giving 10.5 points at home.

Oklahoma State, coming off a bye week, certainly knows a little bit about Texas Tech, as well. The Cowboys (4-2 SU, 5-1 ATS) went to Lubbock as 9-point Week 6 favorites and exited with a 45-39 outright loss.

“This game opened Oklahoma State -3.5 and ticked down to 3 on the strength of some early Baylor interest,” Chaprales said. “The Bears have impressed in a weak Big 12 so far, but the market remains a bit skeptical about their 6-0 start, evidenced by them catching points against a team that’s dropped two of its past three.”

                      UCLA at Stanford
                      Joe Nelson

The Pac-12 was in the spotlight Friday night last week and will have the Thursday night showcase game to start a huge mid-October college football weekend with 61 FBS games Wednesday to Saturday. UCLA and Stanford aren’t where they expected to be at this point in the season and both squads are in a need of a win to improve its chances at the postseason. Here is a look at the Thursday ESPN game in a Pac-12 crossover contest.

Venue: Stanford Stadium in Palo Alto, California
                      Time/TV: Thursday, October 7, 9:00 p.m. ET ESPN
                      Line: Stanford -7, Over/Under 52½
                      Last Meeting: 2018 Stanford (-7) 49, at UCLA 42

When the Thursday night schedule was set, this mid-October Pac-12 contest looked like one of the more appealing Thursday night games of the season with high profile programs and coaches in a matchup of potential conference title threats. The season hasn’t unfolded that way for UCLA or Stanford as this week’s game will feel like more like a postseason elimination game.

UCLA’s bowl hopes are certainly miniscule with a 1-5 start in Chip Kelly’s second season with the Bruins as few coaches have experienced a collapse like Kelly has in recent years. A star at Oregon, Kelly won the NFC East in his first season as a NFL head coach before some questionable roster decisions led to his departure and he had one terrible year in San Francisco as well. Back in the college game and back in the Pac-12, Kelly is 4-14 at UCLA and on a 12-37 run since 2015 in his three different coaching jobs.

He signed a five-year contract ahead of the 2018 season and school would owe him roughly $9 million should they move on from Kelly before January 15, 2022 as the Bruins are likely stuck with Kelly for better or worse after making a very favorable contract offer for him while competing with Florida among others for his services.

Allowing 131 points in three Pac-12 games is concerning, but the Bruins have scored 115 points and three of five losses have come by 10 or fewer points. The remaining schedule doesn’t offer great prospects but the best chances for wins are likely the next three weeks with this trip to Stanford before home games with Arizona State and Colorado. At this point matching last season’s 3-9 record would probably be considered a minor success and the good news is that next season’s schedule is much easier with no power five non-conference games while like this season, avoiding Oregon and Washington in the conference slate.

One of UCLA’s top receivers the past two seasons, Theo Howard, just announced he will redshirt and transfer for another negative headline but the production in the passing game has been adequate, though inflated from playing from behind often. Dorian-Thompson-Robinson has struggled with his accuracy at quarterback completing just 56 percent of his passes with six interceptions but the rushing game support has been limited with UCLA posting 857 yards on the ground over six games on just 3.7 yards per carry.

Stanford actually sits in second place in the Pac-12 North at 2-2, but having already lost to Oregon hopes for a run to the top are remote. The Cardinal needs three more wins to return to a bowl game, having made the postseason in all eight seasons under David Shaw. Certainly a coach that would have been given an opportunity at a higher profile program or the NFL had he shown the inclination, Shaw is 85-29 at Stanford including 57-18 in Pac-12 games with three conference titles and two Rose Bowl wins. The last championship came in 2015 and after winning 10 or more games in five of his first six seasons, this will be a third straight season without reaching that mark and likely Shaw’s worst season with the low mark 8-5 in 2014.

Stanford has played without longtime quarterback K.J. Costello in three games this season and he is expected to remain out of action with a hand injury this week. Backup Davis Mills struggled in the loss at USC starting ahead of Costello but he has played well the past two games in wins, including the upset over Washington. He injured his calf and remains very much questionable to play Thursday night. Sophomore Jack West could make his first start and he has seen the practice reps this week while also playing extensively as a primary quarterback in spring ball but his actual game experience is very limited, taking only a few token snaps the past two seasons.

Stanford has also been hurt by a marginal rushing attack as well Cameron Scarlett has posted 564 rushing yards he is doing so on 4.4 yards per rush and Stanford has posted just 3.8 yards per rush as a team. The Cardinal also lacks the big athletic receiving corps they had last season led by J.J. Arcega-Whiteside, who is now playing with the Eagles.

Many of the toughest games for Stanford are behind them with four of the final six at home and USC, Oregon, and Washington already out of the way. The Cardinal drew a difficult non-conference schedule with Northwestern and UCF and September and will close the season facing Notre Dame in late November. Winning there of the next four ahead of that game in Pac-12 play is possible, but not a given as Stanford’s bowl probability could hinge this game.

                      Last Season:

Stanford’s game at UCLA last season was supposed to be the final game of the regular season, but the previous week’s game with rival California had to be postponed due to the nearby fires. After that unexpected off week, Stanford won 49-42 at the Rose Bowl despite being out-gained 528-470. UCLA led 3-0 early but didn’t take the lead again until a fourth quarter score made it 42-41 with the Bruins scoring 15 consecutive points with a safety, a kickoff return, and a 90-yard drive, though with a missed two-point conversion.

Stanford would hit a 52-yard pass about a minute later and got the two-point conversion to go up by seven (and even with the closing spread) and UCLA had three late drives ending in a missed field goal, a failed 4th-and-15 from the Stanford 24, and a failed 4th-and-8 across midfield. Wilton Speight was the UCLA quarterback for the game with 466 passing yards but no touchdowns while Costello had five for Stanford. It was the season finale for UCLA and followed up the win over USC the previous week in what wound up being a 1-4 run to close the season despite a few very competitive games.

                      Series History:

Stanford is 11-0 S/U & 9-1-1 ATS in this series since 2009 as Shaw has not lost to the Bruins. Stanford won 58-34 as 6½-point favorite in the last home meeting in 2017. Going back to 1980, Stanford is on a 12-8 ATS run at home in this series while on a 16-9-1 ATS run as a favorite with most of those instances in recent years as Stanford was favored just twice from 1980 to 2007 before being favored in all but one meeting since 2008 in this series. These coaches split two meetings while Kelly was at Oregon with the road team winning both games including Stanford winning as a +19 underdog in 2012 vs. an undefeated #2 ranked Ducks team led by Marcus Mariota.

                      Historical Trends:

UCLA is on a 3-17 S/U run in road games since 2016 with an 8-12 ATS record. Since 2008, UCLA is 18-27 ATS as a road underdog. Under Shaw, Stanford is 46-9 S/U and 32-23 ATS at home though with slightly lesser numbers as a home favorite at 27-22 ATS with just a 11-10 ATS record in that role since 2016.

                        WILLIAMS WON'T START

The Miami Hurricanes will start N'Kosi Perry at quarterback for a second consecutive week. Perry gets the call for this weekend's encounter with Georgia Tech with redshirt freshman QB Jarren Williams still recovering from a shoulder injury. Williams, who was hurt Oct. 5 against Virginia Tech, might still appear in the game but won't take the first snap.

Perry was solid if unspectacular in relief last week, completing 16 of 27 passes for 182 yards and a touchdown in an upset win over a stout Virginia defense. Perry has completed 60.7 percent of his attempts with six TDs against just one interception in 2019.

That Perry doesn't represent an offensive downgrade – at least on paper – only galvanizes the notion that Miami is a terrific cover option; the Hurricanes shouldn't miss a beat on offense, while the Yellow Jackets are an absolute mess with the football.

                        JAMIE'S JUST FINE

Wake Forest bettors and fans should expect to see quarterback Jamie Newman back on the field for Saturday's encounter with Florida State. Newman left late in last week's wild 62-59 victory over Louisville after suffering a reported upper-body injury. But Newman is listed as the starter on this week's depth chart for a weekend showdown with a Seminoles team that was walloped 45-14 by host Clemson last time out.

Newman has been one of the top players in the Atlantic Coast Conference so far this season, leading all quarterbacks in passing yards (1,772) and touchdowns (17). Florida State's pass defense has been a ghastly sight this season, having allowed an average of 290.5 points per game. With Newman at the helm, the Over on Wake Forest's team total is a strong option Saturday.

                          Friday's Best Bets
                          Matt Blunt

The Friday night lights shine on eight different teams in college football this week as it's a nice mix of games across the board. It's because of the schedule being that way that there was no one game to really isolate on, so it's going to be some quick-hitters on most of these games to hopefully help with your handicapping process.

Last week, it was missed opportunities galore for Virginia in their 17-9 loss to Miami, as turnovers, the inability to score TD's, and the inability to get a late stop had all Virginia backers like myself pulling at their hair for that final result. Hopefully this week's top play for Friday can provide better results, so let's get right to some of these games.

                          Marshall at FAU

Venue/Location: FAU Stadium, Boca Raton, FL
                          Time/TV: Friday, Oct. 18 (CBSSN, 6:30 p.m. ET)
                          Line: FAU -5.5, Total 57.5

A short week for both teams here which could suggest some sloppy football and a look towards the low side of the total. Both teams are coming off double-digit victories last weekend where they held their opponents to 17 points or less which would further support that look to the 'under.' That is the total side that's getting about 60% of the support currently, but it's also support that has yet to force a move on the number.

In terms of the side, that hasn't moved yet either, despite strong 70%+ support on Marshall as an underdog. Given that Marshall is just 1-5 ATS and hasn't covered a spread since the second week of the season, backing the Thundering Herd here in a public underdog role isn't something I'd be particularly interested in. Each of Marshall's two road games this year have been losses by at least seven points, and I'm not sure they've got the offensive firepower to keep up with Lane Kiffin's squad should the Owls be rather sharp. The Owls have scored 40+ in three of their last four games and Marshall hasn't had back-to-back solid offensive performances all year.

It would be home team or nothing here for me.

                          Pittsburgh at Syracuse

                          Venue/Location: Carrier Dome, Syracuse, NY
                          Time/TV: Friday, Oct. 18 (ESPN, 7:00 p.m. ET)
                          Line: Pittsburgh -3.5, Total 52

There were some big expectations for the Orange this year, but blowout losses to Maryland and Clemson early killed those dreams in a hurry, and a 1-4 ATS run coming into this week's game has their stock in the betting market arguably at it's lowest point of the season. Syracuse couldn't get much of anything done offensively last week against a ho-hum NC State squad, and now they welcome a Pitt team to town that's 4-1 ATS in their last five overall.

Pitt's run recently is highlighted by their SU win over UCF a few weeks back, but they put a serious scare in Penn State as well, along with going into Duke last week and beating the Blue Devils as a small road dog. Recent form suggests Pittsburgh is the play, but I'm not buying it. If Syracuse's stock is near/at an all-time low, then can't you consider Pittsburgh's stock being near/at an all-time high this year?

If that ends up being the case, laying road chalk here of any number with the Panthers is egregious, and it's not like Syracuse has lost ALL the talent they had coming into the year when many expected big things from them. At home in the Carrier Dome under the lights on a Friday night as the potential to be a crazy atmosphere that's worth multiple points to the Orange, although I'm not sure you'll even need the points here. Syracuse gets things together finally in 2019 and wins this game outright.

                          Best Bet: Syracuse +3.5

                          Ohio State vs. Northwestern

                          Venue/Location: Ryan Field, Evanston, IL
                          Time/TV: Friday, Oct. 18 (BTN, 8:30 p.m. ET)
Line: Ohio State -28.5, Total 49.5

Based on the results so far in 2019, I've gone against Ohio State far more often than anyone should, and although there are some things working in the Wildcats favor, it's extremely tough to step in front of this freight train that are the Ohio State Buckeyes this year. Your own past results betting for/against a particular team should never have a heavy influence on said team's games in the future, and it would be Northwestern or nothing for me here, but it's ultimately going to be a pass.

Yet, in terms of treating teams like stock valuations, Ohio State's stock continues to rise and eventually it will be time to sell on them. Laying four TD's on the road in a prime time conference game would appear to be a great spot to hit the sell button on Ohio State, especially when Ohio State is on a 3-7 ATS run against losing teams and Northwestern is 6-1 ATS off a SU loss, but I'll be ultimately on the sidelines here.

                          UNLV vs. Fresno State

                          Venue/Location: Bulldog Stadium, Fresno, CA
                          Time/TV: Friday, Oct. 18 (CBSSN, 10:00 p.m. ET)
Line: Fresno State -15.5, Total 53

Interesting spot here as you've got a UNLV team off a huge 34-10 upset win over Vanderbilt as 16-point underdogs visiting a Fresno State team that got blasted by Air Force (43-24) last week. Casual bettors would take in those two results and jump on UNLV plus the points in all likelihood, but like the first game on Friday's card, it would be the home team or nothing for me here.

Fresno State is in a rebuilding year after losing so much talent from last year's conference championship team, and they continue to try and need to find their footing. But fading a team after such a big upset win is a scenario that should take precedence here, because it's highly unlikely that everything goes right for UNLV two weeks in a row.

Vanderbilt's not really a good team in their own right and probably shouldn't have been laying that many points, but that was the first time all year against FBS competition that UNLV scored more than 17 points and allowed fewer than 30. We probably see both of those things revert back to form with Fresno State running away with this game in the 2nd half.

                          Best Bet: Fresno State -15.5

                            Saturday's Tip Sheet
                            October 18, 2019
                            By Brian Edwards

Without a real main event – at least under the lights – in Week 8, we’re just going to jump around the country with some nuggets on various games Saturday…

-- South Carolina QB Ryan Hilinski is ‘probable’ vs. Florida after spraining his knee and missing the second half of last week’s 20-17 double-overtime win at Georgia. The Gamecocks cashed 10/1 money-line tickets at the Westgate SuperBook, even though they had to play a third-string QB the entire second half and both extra sessions. Bryan Edwards, who ranks third in program history in career receiving yards, is ‘questionable’ against the Gators, who are 3-1 ATS as road favorites on Dan Mullen’s watch. UF’s two best pass rushers, DEs Jonathan Greenard and Jabari Zuniga, will both be game-time decisions, according to Mullen. However, VegasInsider.com sources have indicated that there isn’t much confidence that either defensive force is going to be able to go at Williams-Brice Stadium at noon Eastern on Saturday. As of Friday, most books had Florida installed as a five-point favorite with a total of 47. The Gamecocks were +175 on the money line. The weather forecast is calling for rain in Columbia. ESPN will provide television coverage.

-- Alabama will play host to Tennessee at 9:00 p.m. Eastern on ESPN. As of Friday afternoon, most books had the Crimson Tide listed as a 34.5-point home ‘chalk’ with a total of 61. Playing this side is dangerous because if Nick Saban’s club gets ahead of the number, there’s a good chance junior QB and Heisman Trophy favorite Tua Tagovailoa (27/1 touchdown-to-interception ratio) will get shut down for the rest of the night. That would leave the backdoor open. I believe you look to play Alabama’s team total ‘over’ in the first half if it’s 28 points or less. I did this on the Tide last week at ‘over’ 20.5 for its first-half team total and it was an easy winner. UT improved to 2-4 with last week’s 20-10 home win over Tennessee.

-- Boston College junior QB Anthony Brown is out for the rest of the season with a knee injury.

-- Oregon TE Jacob Breeland is out for the season. Breeland was leading the Ducks in receiving yards. Washington, a 2.5-point home underdog vs. Oregon, is a home ‘dog for the first time since 2015. ABC will have the telecast at 3:30 p.m. Eastern.

-- Eastern Michigan is an 8.5-point underdog vs. Western Michigan. The Eagles are a stellar 21-4-1 ATS in their past 26 games as underdogs. They committed a pair of red-zone turnovers and missed an extra point in last week’s 29-23 home loss to Ball State. EMU has been favored in each of its last three games, but Chris Creighton’s club is back in the ‘dog role bettors love to see it occupying.

-- Buffalo QB Matt Myers is ‘questionable’ with a neck injury that caused him to miss a 21-20 overtime loss to Ohio two weeks ago. Back-up Kyle Vantrease sustained a foot injury against the Bobcats, but he was upgraded to ‘probable’ Thursday and will likely start at Akron. The Zips, who are 0-6 ATS along with Vanderbilt and Georgia Tech, are 17.5-point home underdogs against the Bulls, who are 0-3 both SU and ATS on the road this year.

-- Wake Forest junior rover Luke Masterson is out for the season with a shoulder injury. QB Jamie Newman is ‘questionable’ vs FSU with a shoulder injury, but the Demon Deacons have one of the nation’s best back-up QBs in Sam Hartman, who nearly orchestrated a remarkable comeback win in last week’s 62-59 home loss to Louisville. Hartman, who played a lot as a true freshman in 2018 when he had a 16/8 TD-INT ratio, threw for 175 yards and two TDs without an interception. He also had a rushing TD against the Cardinals. This is the first time the Deacs have been favorites (H/T to ESPN’s ‘The Bear,’ Chris Fallica) against FSU since the Seminoles entered the ACC in 1990. In fact, they’ve only been underdogs of less than a TD twice, winning outright both times during Riley Skinner’s Era as QB under Jim Grobe. As of Friday afternoon, most spots had Wake favored by 1.5 points. Another note on Dave Clawson’s team is that starting senior OG Nathan Gilliam popped up on the injury report Thursday as ‘questionable’ with a foot injury. FSU got smashed 45-14 at Clemson last week in a game that wasn’t as close as the final score indicated. The Seminoles are 1-3-1 ATS in five games as road underdogs on Willie Taggart’s watch. Kickoff in Winston-Salem is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Eastern on the ACC Network.

-- Vanderbilt star RB Ke’Shawn Vaughn and WR Kalija Lipscomb, who led the SEC in catches in 2018, are both ‘questionable’ for Saturday’s home game vs. Missouri. However, Vaughn indicated on Twitter earlier this week that he will play. The Tigers, who have beaten Vandy three times in a row but failed to cover and had to rally for a 33-28 home triumph last season, were 21-point road favorites as of late Friday afternoon. This is a 4:00 p.m. Eastern kick on the SEC Network.

-- The Westgate SuperBook updated its Games of the Year spreads earlier this week. Some notable highlights include Georgia -10 vs. Florida, Alabama -10.5 vs. LSU, Ohio State -14.5 vs. Penn State, Alabama -13.5 vs. Auburn, Florida -16.5 vs. FSU, LSU -17.5 vs. Texas A&M, Wisconsin -11.5 at Minnesota, Clemson -19.5 at South Carolina, Oklahoma -14 at Oklahoma State and Ohio State -13 at Michigan. If Zuniga and Greenard are back healthy, I like the Gators to beat UGA outright. Remember, UF might get explosive WR Kadarius Toney back from a wrist injury sustained in Week 2 in time to face the Bulldogs.

-- What are you thinking on an LSU at Alabama total with the way these offenses are humming right now? I asked a couple of sharp handicappers that question this week. Brad Powers said 71, while Christopher Smith offered 76? Me? I’m thinking closer to 80.

-- Boise State true freshman QB Hank Bachmeier is ‘questionable’ at BYU due to hip injury sustained in last week’s 59-37 home win over Hawaii. BYU is already without its starting QB Zach Wilson (thumb) until late November, and Cougars’ back-up QB Jaren Hall is going to be a game-time decision due to an undisclosed injury. The Broncos are seven-point road favorites in Provo during ‘The Feel-Good Hours,’ which is to say it’s a 10:15 p.m. ET. start on ESPN2.

-- Illinois QB Brandon Peters (10/4 TD-INT) is ‘questionable’ vs. Wisconsin due to a concussion sustained earlier this month. The Badgers, who are 31-point road favorites, have cashed tickets at an outstanding 12-3 ATS clip in their 15 games as road ‘chalk’ on Paul Chryst’s watch. This is a noon Eastern start on the Big Ten Network.

-- West Virginia QB Austin Kendall was upgraded to ‘probable’ early Friday for his team’s trip to Norman to face his former team. Oklahoma is a 33-point home favorite against the Mountaineers for a noon kick on FOX.

--Louisiana improved to 6-1 ATS with Thursday’s 37-20 win at Arkansas State as a six-point road favorite. Raymond Calais had 144 rushing yards and two TDs on just eight carries for the Ragin’ Cajuns, who have an open date on deck before hosting Texas St. Billy Napier’s team should be favored in its final five games and if it wins them all, it will be 10-2 (SU) and get a rematch with Appalachian St. in the Sun Belt Championship Game. The Mountaineers, who are 14.5-point home favorites vs. ULM on Saturday, won a 17-7 decision in Lafayette last Wednesday.

-- UTSA QB Frank Harris is out for the year with an arm injury.

                              Saturday's Essentials
                              Tony Mejia

Here’s a look at what must be considered before wagering on Saturday's slate in select FBS vs. FBS matchups:

                              Early Starts

Clemson (-24.5/62) at Louisville, 12 p.m. ET, ABC:
The Cardinals ruled “Puma” Pass out for the remainder of the season after foot surgery and are hoping to get through the rest of the season with sophomore Micale Cunningham and freshman Evan Conley under center. Cunningham was banged up in the 62-59 upset at Wake, the second consecutive shootout the Cards have had go their way after edging BC 41-39. Yep, the ‘Ville is a 2-0 in ACC play this month, winning by an average score of 55-49. An upset here would give Louisville control of the ACC Atlantic, not to mention throw the national title picture into chaos since it would end the ACC’s pursuit of a third championship in four years.

Coming off its most impressive performance of the season in a 45-14 rout of FSU, Clemson wants no part of flirting with disaster like it did last time it took the field on the road at UNC, so we’ll see where Dabo Swinney’s team is as we approach the season’s halfway point. Following last season’s 5-0 start, the Tigers outscored their next four opponents by 204 points, an average margin of victory of 51 points. Clemson has defeated Louisville in all five meetings since they began ACC play in ’14, covering in the last three.

                              Purdue at Iowa (-4.5/50.5), 12 p.m. ET, ESPN2:
Redshirt freshman Jack Plummer threw for 420 yards and three scores in routing Maryland last week, so watching his growth the rest of the season should be interesting, particularly since Purdue has such little room for error if it is going to reach a third straight bowl game under Jeff Brohm. Top WR/returner Rondale More is still out and RB Richie Worship is expected to be a game-time decision, so the Boilermakers will need playmakers to step up on the road, where they’ve gone 0-2 thus far.

The Hawkeyes have scored 15 total points in their two losses against Michigan and Penn State this month and are hoping to turn things around offensively in this Homecoming game. Kirk Ferentz has lost back-to-back meetings against Brohm and the Boilers and saw his team lose a 38-36 shootout in West Lafayette last season, producing the most points they’ve managed in a loss since 2011. Iowa has lost guard Cole Banwart for the season and won’t have Kyler Schott back until November, so it will be doing some reshuffling up front. Despite sputtering offensively, count on the Hawkeyes to try establishing the run to take advantage of Purdue’s thin linebacker group.

Florida (-4.5/46) at South Carolina, 12 p.m. ET, ESPN:
After stunning Georgia in Athens in the upset of the season to date, the Gamecocks return home looking to pull off another upset and give themselves a shot at a trip to the SEC Championship game if it can get some help in the form of teams knocking off Mizzou. Head coach Will Muschamp is 1-2 against his former employer since taking over in Columbia, winning the only matchup at Williams-Brice Stadium. South Carolina will have watched a lot of last season’s tape by the time it takes the field, so it will have it drilled in that it collectively blew a 31-14 third-quarter lead by surrendering the game’s final three touchdowns.

Florida’s heavily hyped defense surrendered over 500 yards and six TDs without forcing a turnover in last week’s loss at LSU, so they’ll be looking to rebound after dropping the first true road game of the Dan Mullen era after opening with five straight wins. DE Jabari Zuniga and LB Jon Greenard suffered ankle injuries they’ll look to overcome in order to participate here. South Carolina should have freshman starting QB Ryan Hilinski in the mix after suffering a knee sprain in Athens, but will have redshirt freshman Dakereon Joyner prepared if necessary. Expect to see both. Senior WR Bryan Edwards, second in program history in receptions, will look to overcome an ankle injury in order to participate.

West Virginia at Oklahoma (-33/63.5), 12 p.m ET, FOX:
This matchup became more compelling when former Sooners QB Austin Kendall, who served as backup to Baker Mayfield and Kyler Murray, was cleared to play after taking a big hit in last week’s 24-point loss to Iowa State. The Mountaineers come into Norman 3-3 under new head coach Neal Brown, who took the job after a strong run at Troy following Dana Holgorsen’s departure for the University of Houston.

Losing your defensive leader before running into one of the country’s most prolific offensive teams is never ideal but is the situation facing West Virginia after LB VanDarius Cowan, an Alabama transfer, was lost for the rest of the season following knee surgery. Already thin at the linebacker spot, the Mountaineers have also seen safety Jamari Stewart exit the program and won’t have top corner Hakeem Bailey in the first half here after being ejected for targeting. The Sooners are relatively healthy coming of their Red River Rivalry win but will be missing standout TE Grant Calcaterra (undisclosed) for a second straight week. Oklahoma has won its last four games following the Texas showdown and has beaten West Virginia seven consecutive times.

                              Afternoon Delights

Duke at Virginia (-3.5/45), 3:30 p.m. ET, ACCN:
The winner of this one will join Pitt atop the ACC Coastal, so even though this matchup is always more appealing on the hardwood, this matchup is definitely worth watching. Duke is the highest-scoring team in the division, ranking third behind Clemson and Louisville in ACC play in averaging 39 points per game. Bronco Mendenhall’s defense hopes to put a dent in that gaudy average by continuing a run that featured making first-round NFL draft pick Daniel Jones look terrible over the past few seasons.

Mendenhall is 3-0 against the Blue Devils, part of a four-game win streak the ‘Hoos hold as they take the field in Charlottesville. After last week’s 17-9 loss at Miami, Virginia will be looking to overcome the loss of top corner Bryce Hall while getting its inconsistent offense sparked back up behind senior QB Bryce Perkins, who is no longer wearing his cumbersome brace and will have top weapons Joe Reed and Hasise Dubois to throw to if his questionable offensive line gives him time. Duke will visit Chapel Hill next week before its bye, so it has reached a critical juncture in its season before even facing Notre Dame, ‘Cuse, Wake and Miami in November.

Oregon (-2.5/48) at Washington, 3:30 p.m. ET, ABC:
Chip Kelly turned the Ducks into an offensive juggernaut and Marcus Mariota and current standout QB Justin Herbert have kept the tradition going, but this year’s team is unquestionably led by the defense despite the presence of another highly-rated future first-rounder under center. Defensive coordinator Andy Avalos is climbing up those lists every athletic director keeps of up-and-coming potential coaching targets, designing a defense that has surrendered an average of five points per game over their last five wins since blowing a late lead vs. Auburn in the season opener.

Oregon safety Jevon Holland has been cleared to play, joining top linebacker Troy Dye in being up for the challenge of stopping Huskies QB Jacob Eason, who helped dominate in a 51-27 rout of Arizona. Oregon won last season’s game in OT to snap a two-game losing streak in the series. Washington will look to find top WR Aaron Fuller and speedy back Salvon Ahmed room to work with against a stingy, aggressive defense. This will be the first time the Huskies have been a home underdog since 2015. Head coach Chris Petersen has led U-Dub to victories in 22 of 24 in Seattle but may not have center Nick Harris, one of the country’s best at his position. The Ducks won’t have elite tight end Jacob Breeland. Steady rain is in the forecast.

LSU (-18.5/62) at Mississippi State, 3:30 p.m. ET, CBS:
The Tigers have had no problems packing their prolific offense on both occasions they’ve hit the road this season, averaging 55.5 points in their wins over Texas and Vanderbilt. LSU’s next non-cover against an FBS foe will be its first since last season’s 72-70, seven-OT loss at Texas A&M, so Ed Orgeron has his group on quite the run. Joe Burrow LSU QB Joe Burrow is tied for second (+275) alongside Oklahoma’s Hurts in the latest Heisman odds update, trailing only Alabama’s Tua Tagovailoa. He ranks first in the SEC in yards per game, completions and completion percentage and is on track to throw for over 4,000 yards while ranking second in rating and touchdown passes behind Tagovailoa.

Mississippi State has dropped three of four after being held to a season-low 10 points in falling at Tennessee. Kansas State has already won in Starkville this season, but Joe Moorhead is 8-2 in home games since taking over for Dan Mullen. LSU has won three of the last four in this SEC West Division series but fell 37-7 in its last trip into town. The Bulldogs are going to start freshman Garrett Shrader, who has endeared himself to the fan base with his toughness and ability to make plays with his feet and his arm. The first recruit of the Moorhead era, Shrader is expected to be the starter going forward and will look to team with RB Kylin Hill in moving the chains enough to play keepaway from powerful LSU.

Boise State (-7/46) at BYU, 10:15 p.m. ET, ESPN:
Although the Broncos haven’t made it official, the expectation is that freshman Hank Bachmeier may be too banged up to play after inuring his hip against Hawai’I last week. That sets the stage for Chase Cord to get more work after excelling in last week’s win, proving he’s back from a torn ACL. Senior Jaylon Henderson is also available to start on the road in Provo as Boise State looks to remain the top Group of Five team ahead of fellow unbeatens SMU and Appalachian State, but Cord is the most likely candidate to be out there as Boise State looks to post what would be just the third road win in 10 tries in this series. Boise won at BYU in ’17 and has won four of five, including the last three. With Zach Wilson sidelined by a thumb injury and Jaren Hall potentially not out of concussion protocol, freshman Baylor Romney or sophomore Joe Critchlow will start. The Cougars are 6-9 over their past 15 home games under head coach Kalani Sitake.
