CFL Betting Notes - Week 18
    David Schwab

Last weekend’s betting action in the CFL started on Friday night with Hamilton rolling over Edmonton 42-12 closing as a seven-point favorite at home.

Saturday’s triple-header of games got underway in Montreal with the Alouettes stunning Calgary 21-17 as three-point underdogs. Saskatchewan went on to beat Winnipeg 21-6 as a 3 ½-point home favorite in a crucial West Division battle and British Columbia kept its playoff hopes alive with a 55-8 pasting of Toronto closing as an 8 ½-point favorite at home.

    Friday, Oct. 11

Ottawa RedBlacks (3-11 SU, 5-9 ATS) at Toronto Argonauts (2-12 SU, 5-7-2 ATS)
    Point-spread: Toronto -2
    Total: 48

    Game Overview

Ottawa comes off a bye in the midst of a straight-up seven-game losing streak that includes a 46-17 loss to Toronto on Sept. 7 as a five-point home underdog. It did manage to cover against Edmonton in a 21-16 Week 16 loss as a seven-point underdog at home. The RedBlacks failed to cover against the spread in their previous five games and the total has stayed UNDER in five of their last seven outings. Quarterback Dominique Davis was injured in the recent loss to the Eskimos but he is not listed on the team’s current injury report. Jonathan Jennings actually got the start at QB in that game.

Saturday’s loss was Toronto’s sixth straight-up setback in its last seven games while going 2-3-2 against the spread in that same span. The total went OVER 51 points against BC and it has gone OVER in in six of the Argonauts’ last seven contests. This offense is averaging just 19.9 points per game and Toronto is ranked last in the CFL in average points allowed (35.8). It allowed 48 points in the first three quarters of Saturday’s loss. The offense was held to 126 yards passing and 41 yards running the ball in that game.

    Betting Trends

-- Toronto has a SU 4-1 record against the RedBlacks in the last five meetings overall and it has won 10 of its last 11 home games against its East Division foe. The total has stayed UNDER in six of the last eight meetings.

Saskatchewan (10-4 SU, 9-5 ATS) at Calgary Stampeders (9-5 SU, 5-8-1 ATS)
    Point-spread: Calgary -3
    Total: 47 ½

    Game Overview

The Roughriders moved into sole possession of first place in the West Division with their win over Winnipeg combined with Calgary’s loss. They have now won nine of their last 10 games SU while going 7-3 ATS. They did lose to the Stampeders 37-10 back on July 6 as five-point home favorites. Saskatchewan is 4-2 ATS on the road this season and the total has stayed UNDER in two of its last three road games. The Stampeders used three key turnovers to get past the Blue Bombers on Saturday. They also got another strong effort from Cody Fajardo at quarterback. He threw for 299 yards and a score while also leading the team in rushing (47 yards).

Saturday’s loss snapped a SU four-game winning streak with Calgary going 2-2-1 ATS in its last five games. The total has stayed UNDER in four of the five outings. The Stampeders are 1-7-1 ATS this season when closing as favorites and they are 2-5 ATS in seven previous home games. Three lost fumbles and an interception did not help the losing cause against Montreal. Bo Levi Mitchell ended that game with 464 yards passing while completing 31 of his 43 passing attempts.

    Betting Trends

-- Calgary is 10-3 SU in its last 13 games against Saskatchewan and 7-3 ATS in the last 10 meetings. The total has stayed UNDER in six of the last nine matchups in this bitter West Division rivalry.

    Saturday, Oct. 12

Montreal Alouettes (8-6 SU, 9-5 ATS) at Winnipeg Blue Bombers (9-6 SU, 9-6 ATS)
    Point-spread: Winnipeg -4
    Total: 48

    Game Overview

Montreal is back in the playoffs for the first time since 2014. It has been able to cover the closing spread in its last four games with a SU 2-2 record in those contests. The total has stayed UNDER in four of the Alouettes’ last six games. Vernon Adams Jr. was back under center after serving a one-game league suspension. He completed 18-of-29 passing attempts for 206 yards. The offense added another 92 yards running the ball on 20 carries. This unit is averaging 25.7 points a game.

With just one SU win in their last five games, the Blue Bombers have fallen into third place in the West Division standings. They have failed to cover ATS in their last three games with the total staying UNDER in five of their last seven outings. Winnipeg is 5-2 ATS in seven previous home games this year. Chris Streveler was picked off twice in Saturday’s loss and he now has six touchdown throws against 10 interceptions in 11 games under center. The Blue Bombers are averaging 27.4 PPG.

    Betting Trends

-- Winnipeg has won five of the last six meetings SU and it has a 4-2 edge ATS in those six games against Montreal. The total has gone OVER in five of those six inter-division matchups.

British Columbia (5-10 SU, 7-8 ATS) at Edmonton Eskimos (7-8 SU, 4-11 ATS)
    Point-spread: BC -2 ½
    Total: 45

    Game Overview

BC brings a SU four-game winning streak into this key West Division battle while going 3-1 ATS. Early in the season, the Lions lost to Edmonton twice while closing as three-point underdogs in each contest. The total went OVER 55 points in a 39-23 road loss to the Eskimos in Week 2. During this current winning streak, BC has outscored its opponents a combine 149-43. Mike Reilly lit things up against Toronto on Saturday with 276 passing yards and five touchdown throws. He now leads the league in passing with 3,891 total yards and 20 scoring throws.

Edmonton is still in position to claim a crossover playoff spot out of the West, but it has lost five of its last six games SU. The Eskimos have also failed to cover in their last six games as part of a 1-8 record ATS in their last nine games. The total went OVER 47 ½ points in Friday’s loss and it has gone OVER in five of their last seven contests. Logan Kilgore continues to get the call at quarterback and he completed 23-of 32 passing attempts for 233 yards and one score against Hamilton but he was picked off three times.

    Betting Trends

-- Edmonton has won six of its last eight games against the Lions both SU and ATS. It has a 4-1 edge ATS in its last five home games against BC. The total has gone OVER in five of the last six meetings at Commonwealth Stadium.

CFL Week 18 preview, odds, picks & predictions: Eskimos to get back on track at home
          Rohit Ponnaiya

The Edmonton Eskimos have struggled under backup quarterback Logan Kilgore but could be due for a win as they face the BC Lions at home on Saturday night.

It's Week 18 in the CFL and we have just four weeks left in the regular season. We break down the odds (provided by 10bet.com) for all the games on this weekend's schedule, including a Saturday night battle between the streaking BC Lions and the slumping Edmonton Eskimos. We've got all the betting notes, analysis and predictions you need to beat the football bookies in the Great White North.

          Season Betting Trends

          Favorites: 48-17 SU, 29-34-2 ATS
Home teams: 39-26 SU, 32-31-2 ATS
          Over/Under: 29-35-1

          Week 17 Picks: 3-1
          Season to date: 29-30-2

OTTAWA REDBLACKS AT TORONTO ARGONAUTS (-1, 47.5)

The worst teams in the CFL clash on Friday night. The Red Blacks have lost seven straight games with an average scoring margin of minus-18.7 during that stretch. They'll be giving quarterback Will Arndt his first career start with starter Dominique Davis injured (former starter Jonathan Jennings looks to be demoted to third string).

The Argos are coming off back to back games where they got absolutely destroyed, but prior to that actually had a little stretch where they looked competitive. They played the Redblacks on the road in Week 13 and came away with a 26-point win. Taking them to cover as 1-point home faves on Friday seems like a solid play.

          PICK: Toronto -1

SASKATCHEWAN ROUGHRIDERS AT CALGARY STAMPEDERS (-3, 47.5)

The top two teams in the West will also battle on Friday. Calgary is coming off a loss to Montreal but prior to that had won four straight, while Saskatchewan has won nine of it's last 10 games.

The Riders have one of the top defenses in the league and have held opponents to just 18.2 points per game over their last nine games. The Stamps have also been winning with defense, giving up just 16.2 ppg over their previous five contests.

Despite star QB Bo Levi Mitchell throwing for over 340 yards in each of their past three games, Calgary's offense has looked prone to errors, averaging just 19.7 ppg over that span. With the Riders 4-1 to the Under in their last five games against teams with a winning record and the Stamps 4-1 to the Under in their previous five contests overall, back the Under again.

          PICK: Under 47.5

MONTREAL ALOUETTES WINNIPEG BLUE BOMBERS (-3.5, 46.5)

The Bombers have lost three straight games to fall from the top spot in the standings. The turning point? A loss against the Alouettes three weeks ago when they squandered a 37-17 fourth-quarter lead. What better way to get back on track than a revenge game against the Als?

Montreal has actually been forced to come from behind an awful lot this season. Over their last eight games they are 5-3 SU but have trailed at halftime in seven of those eight contests. They have a first-half scoring margin of minus-6.4 ppg in that span.

The Bombers got crushed at home two weeks ago against the Tiger-Cats but prior to that were absolutely dominant In Winnipeg, going 6-0 with an average score of 33.3-15.5. Look for Winnipeg to cover the 1H spread.

PICK: First Half Spread - Winnipeg -2

BC LIONS AT EDMONTON ESKIMOS (+2.5, 45.5)

The Lions have won four games in a row and are coming off a 55-8 victory against the Argos. The Eskimos are reeling, having lost five of their last six games, including three of their last four under backup QB Logan Kilgore.

But there are a few reasons we like the home side. Three of BC's last four wins came against the two worst teams in the league and the other was a 2-point victory against an Alouettes side that was missing it's best player. Edmonton has only lost to teams that have already clinched a playoff spot and their previous two defeats came against the No. 1 team in the league in the Ti-Cats.

After a rough start with his new team, BC signal-caller Mike Reilly has started to look like the franchise player he was signed to be. But that's largely because he hasn't been under pressure. During their four-game winning streak the Lions have played the worst pass-rush units in the league and Reilly was sacked a total of four times.

In their previous 11 games BC had given up a whopping 44 quarterback takedowns. Edmonton's defense is tied for the most sacks in the league and should be able to get after Reilly just like they did in Week 5 when they made him eat dirt on five occasions.

The Lions are 0-4 SU and ATS in their last four games in Edmonton and I'm fading them on Saturday night.

          PICK: Edmonton +2.5
