CFL Betting Notes - Week 15
    David Schwab

There were just three games in the CFL this past weekend starting with British Columbia’s 29-5 romp over Ottawa on Friday night as a 5 ½-point home favorite.

Saturday’s CFL doubleheader got underway with Calgary squeezing past Hamilton 19-18 while failing to cover as a 6 ½-point favorite at home. In the nightcap, Saskatchewan kept things perfect for the home team with a 27-25 victory against Montreal. However, the Roughriders could not cover the closing 6 ½-point spread in the third Week 14 inter-division matchup.

    Friday, Sept. 20

Calgary Stampeders (8-4 SU, 5-7 ATS) at Toronto Argonauts (2-9 SU, 5-5-1 ATS)
    Point-spread: Calgary -7
    Total: 53

    Game Overview

The Stampeders are just one game off the pace in the West Division standings with Saturday’s win. They have won their last three games straight-up with a 5-2 record against the spread over their past seven games. The total stayed UNDER 51 ½ points against Hamilton and it has stayed UNDER in seven of Calgary’s last 10 games. A blocked field goal with less than a minute to play was the difference in that last win. Bo Levi Mitchell helped the cause with 342 yards passing and one touchdown throw.

The Argonauts come off their bye with a 3-1-1 record ATS over their last five games. They hammered Ottawa 46-17 their last time out as five-point road underdogs. The total has gone OVER in four of their last five outings. James Wilder Jr. posted three scores in that romp and McLeod Bethel-Thompson finished the day with 411 yards passing with three touchdown throws. That was the most points Toronto scored all season with an offense that is averaging 20.4 points per game.

    Betting Trends

-- Calgary has beaten Toronto SU in 11 of the last 12 meetings and it is 6-1 ATS in its last seven road games in this inter-division matchup. The total has stayed UNDER in four of the last five meetings.

Hamilton Tiger-Cats (9-3 SU, 7-4-1 ATS) at Edmonton Eskimos (6-6 SU, 4-8 ATS)
    Point-spread: TBA
    Total: TBA

    Game Overview

With Montreal’s loss on Saturday, the Tiger-Cats are still 2 ½ games up in the East standings. The loss to Calgary snapped a SU four-game winning streak and the cover evened their record to 2-2-1 ATS in that same span on games. The total has stayed UNDER in six of their last eight games. Hamilton got a solid effort from quarterback Dane Evans in the losing cause. He completed 79.1 percent of his 43 passing attempts for 360 yards and one score. Five different players ran the ball for a total of 113 yards rushing on 20 carries.

The Eskimos are coming off their bye week with three losses in a row both SU and ATS. This includes a home-and-home sweep at the hands of Calgary. They have failed to cover in five of their last six games with the total staying UNDER in seven of their last 10 contests. Edmonton is 2-4 ATS in six previous home games. Trevor Harris missed most of his last start due to injury and he remains questionable for Friday night. Logan Kilgore completed 21-of-28 throws for 242 yards in relief.

    Betting Trends

-- Hamilton is 4-2 SU in its last six games against Edmonton and the total has gone OVER in six of the last seven meetings in this inter-division matchup. The Eskimos are 0-5 ATS in their last five home games against Hamilton.

    Saturday, Sept. 21

Winnipeg Blue Bombers (9-3 SU, 9-3 ATS) at Montreal Alouettes (6-5 SU, 6-5 ATS)
    Point-spread: Winnipeg -2
    Total: 47

    Game Overview

Ahead of last week’s bye, Winnipeg won four of its previous five games SU and it has covered ATS in its last four outings. The total has stayed UNDER in three of its last four games. The Blue Bombers are 4-2 ATS on the road this season. They are still missing Matt Nichols at quarterback with a bad shoulder, but he is listed as questionable on the latest injury report. In his place, Chris Streveler has thrown for 518 yards and four touchdowns in his last three starts. The offense averaged 28.7 points in those three games.

Saturday’s loss snapped a SU three-game winning streak that started with a stunning road win against Calgary. Montreal is just 2-4 ATS over its last six games and it is 2-3 ATS in five previous home games. Vernon Adams Jr. completed 22-of-36 passing attempts for 344 yards and one score his last time out with Eugene Lewis hauling in eight catches for 130 yards and that lone passing touchdown. The Alouettes ran the ball 18 times for 74 yards against Saskatchewan.

    Betting Trends

-- Winnipeg brings a SU five-game winning streak into this inter-division tilt while going 4-1 ATS in its last five games against Montreal. The total went OVER in four of those last five matchups.

British Columbia (2-10 SU, 5-7 ATS) at Ottawa RedBlacks (3-9 SU, 4-8 ATS)
    Point-spread: BC -3
    Total: 47 ½

Friday’s win was the Lions’ first SU victory since July 6. It was also their fourth cover in their last five contests. The total stayed UNDER 49 points against Ottawa and it has stayed UNDER in BC’s last four games. In this home-and-home series opener, BC opened up a 21-0 lead at halftime and cruised to the win behind a stellar effort on defense. This was also one of Mike Reilly’s better efforts of the season with 286 yards passing and two touchdown throws against a pair of interceptions. He has thrown for 12 touchdowns and 13 interceptions on the year.

Ottawa has just one SU win in its last 10 games while going 3-7 ATS during that same span. The total has stayed UNDER in three of its last five games. The RedBlacks are 1-5 ATS at home this season. Jonathon Jennings continues to get the call at quarterback. He completed 19-of-31 passes for 239 yards and zero scores verse a pair of picks in Friday’s loss. He was the team’s leading rusher with 37 yards on eight attempts. Mossis Madu added another 28 yards rushing on eight carries.

    Betting Trends:

-- With Friday’s win, BC is now 14-5 SU in its last 19 games against Ottawa. The Lions have a 5-2 edge ATS in the last seven meetings. The total has stayed UNDER or ended as a PUSH in three of the last five matchups in this inter-division clash.
