CFL Betting Notes - Week 14
    David Schwab

The race to the CFL playoffs is heating up. Montreal helped its cause with Friday’s 21-16 victory over British Columbia, but it could not cover against the spread as a 6 ½-point home favorite. Week 13 featured a tripleheader of action on Saturday, starting with Toronto’s stunning 46-17 romp over Ottawa as a five-point road underdog.

Winnipeg was the only favorite to cover with a 35-10 victory against Saskatchewan closing as a slight two-point favorite at home. Calgary is the defending CFL champ and it is back on track towards this season’s title run with Saturday’s 33-17 upset over Edmonton as a three-point underdog on the road.

    Friday, Sept. 13

Ottawa RedBlacks (3-8 SU, 4-7 ATS) at British Columbia (1-10 SU, 4-7 ATS)
    Point-spread: British Columbia -4 ½
    Total: 50 ½

    Game Overview

Ottawa has now lost eight of its last nine games straight-up while failing to cover in its last three losses. The total went OVER 51 ½ points in Saturday’s loss and it has gone OVER in three of its last five games. The RedBlacks only trailed Toronto by nine points after three quarters of play, but they were outscored 21-1 in the fourth quarter. Johnathan Jennings completed 78.6 percent of his 42 passing attempts for 327 yards and one score, but the offense turned the ball over five times. Ottawa ran the ball just 10 times for 46 yards.

The Lions dropped their seventh game in a row, but they have been able to cover in three of their last four losses. The total has stayed UNDER in their last three outings. This will be their fifth game of the season at home with a SU 0-4 record (1-3 ATS) in the first four home games. Mike Reilly threw for 230 yards and one score while completing an efficient 20 of his 29 passing attempts. He also added 22 yards on the ground as part of BC’s 112 yards rushing on 24 carries. Reilly is third in the CFL in passing yards with 10 touchdown throws verse 11 interceptions.

    Betting Trends

-- BC has won 13 of the last 18 meetings in this inter-division tilt and it has a 4-2 edge ATS in the last six matchups. The total has stayed UNDER or ended as a PUSH in seven of the last 10 games between the two.

    Saturday, Sept. 14

Hamilton Tiger-Cats (9-2 SU, 6-4-1 ATS) at Calgary Stampeders (7-4 SU, 5-6 ATS)
    Point-spread: Calgary -6 ½
    Total: 51 ½

    Game Overview

Hamilton comes off a bye with a SU four-game winning streak, but it is just 1-3-1 ATS over its last five games. The total has stayed UNDER in seven of the Tiger-Cats first 11 games and it has also stayed UNDER in their last three games on the road. Jeramiah Masoli remains on the 6-game injured list with Dane Evans taking his place. He has completed 66.3 percent of his 199 passing attempts for 1,591 yards and seven touchdowns. Evans has also been picked off eight times. Hamilton is averaging 30.5 points a game while holding opposing teams to 19.7 points.

The Stampeders are a game and a half in back of Winnipeg for first place in the West Division standings with the home-and-home sweep over Edmonton. The are 4-1 ATS in their last five games with the total going OVER in three of their last four contests. The return of Bo Levi Mitchell at quarterback has given Calgary’s offense a significant spark. He completed 25-of-40 passing attempts for 254 yards and two scores in Saturday’s win. There was some leftover rust with three interceptions. DaShaun Amos returned a Stampeders’ interception for a score in that game.

    Betting Trends

-- Calgary is 5-0 SU in its last five home games against the Tiger-Cats and it has covered in six of the last eight meetings overall. The total has stayed UNDER in 11 of the last 14 games in this inter-division clash.

Montreal Alouettes (6-4 SU, 5-5 ATS) at Saskatchewan (7-4 SU, 7-4 ATS)
    Point-spread: Saskatchewan -7
    Total: 50

    Game Overview

Montreal is still three and a half games off the pace in the East Division title race, but it is firmly in place for a playoff spot. Friday’s win was the Alouettes third in a row SU, but they are a costly 1-4 ATS over their last five outings. The total stayed UNDER 49 points against BC and it has stayed UNDER in four of their last six games. Montreal is 5-2 ATS this season when closing as an underdog. Vernon Adams Jr. continues to play well at quarterback. He threw for 232 yards with one score and one interception his last time out. Adams is fifth in the CFL in total passing yards (2,121).

The Roughriders ended a SU six-game winning streak with Saturday’s loss to Winnipeg. They are 5-2 ATS during the same seven-game span with the total staying UNDER in four of their last five contests. Saskatchewan is 4-2 ATS at home this season and 5-2 ATS when closing as a favorite. Trailing Saturday’s game 28-3 at halftime, the offense only managed to add seven points in the second half. Cody Fajardo did not have his best day throwing the ball with 196 yards on 16 completions with zero touchdowns and one pick.

    Betting Trends

-- The Roughriders are 4-2 SU in their last six home games against Montreal with the total staying UNDER in five of the last six meetings in Saskatchewan. The Alouettes have a 10-5 edge ATS in the last 15 meetings overall.

CFL Week 14 preview, odds, picks & predictions: First-half problems fuel this bet
      Rohit Ponnaiya

The Hamilton Tiger-Cats haven't won on the road against the Calgary Stampeders since 2004, and they're 6.5-point underdogs for their trip to McMahon Stadium on Saturday .

It's Week 14 of the CFL season and we could be in for a preview of this year's Grey Cup in Calgary as the defending champion Stampeders host the 9-2 Hamilton Tiger-Cats.

We break down the odds (provided by 10bet.com) and bring you in-depth analysis and predictions for all the football games north of the border.

      Season Betting Trends

      Favorites: 36-14 SU, 22-27-1 ATS
Home teams: 30-20 SU, 25-24-1 ATS
      Over/Under: 23-26-1

      Week 13 Picks: 3-1
      Season to date: 21-23-2

      OTTAWA REDBLACKS AT BC LIONS

This might be a matchup of the two worst teams in the league. The Lions are 1-10 and 0-4 at home, while the Redblacks have lost eight of their last nine games and are coming off a 46-17 drubbing at the hands of the Argonauts. So who has the edge? It's worth pointing out that BC has at least been competitive recently, losing three of their last four games by five or fewer points.

BC also has the edge at QB with Mike Reilly as opposed to Ottawa's two-headed platoon of mediocrity in Jonanthan Jennings and Dominique Davis. While Reilly has struggled at times this season that's largely because of how inept his pass protection. Considering that the Redblacks pass rush has mustered only 18 sacks that shouldn't be much of a problem for the Lions on Friday. Back BC to win and cover.

      PICK: BC -5.5

      HAMILTON TIGER-CATS AT CALGARY STAMPEDERS

Calgary survived seven games without 2018 Most Outstanding Player Bo Levi Mitchell at quarterback, going 4-3 with backup Nick Arbuckle. Now Mitchell is back and the Stamps are more than ready to defend their Grey Cup title. The Tiger-Cats are getting by without their own starting signal-caller, having won four straight with Dane Evans under center.

However, the Ti-Cats have gotten off to poor starts ever since they lost star QB Jeremiah Masoli: they trailed 13-6 at halftime vs the Riders, were down 21-19 against the Lions, led by a score of 4-1 vs the Redblacks, were tied 3-3 at half in Week 11, and in their last game trailed the Argos by 13 points after 30 minutes.

The Ti-Cats haven't won at McMahon Stadium since 2004, going 0-14 in their last 14 visits to Calgary, . That history of ugly Calgary road trips along with their first-half woes has me backing the Stamps on the 1H spread.

PICK: First Half Spread Calgary -3.5

      MONTREAL ALOUETTES AT SASKATCHEWAN ROUGHRIDERS

These teams tangled back on August 9 and it was a grind-it-out slug fest with a final score of 17-10. The offenses were actually even worse than that score suggests; both of Saskatchewan's touchdowns were scored by their defense and the Alouettes' lone TD was on a punt return.

Montreal's offense shouldn't be quite as putrid this time around since they have a competent QB in Vernon Adams Jr. as opposed to Antonio Pipkin and Matthew Schiltz (who combined for a horrific 90 passing yards in that home loss). That said, even with Adams throwing the ball they scored 21 points against BC last week and 28 against Toronto the week before, modest numbers against the two worst defenses in the league.

The Roughriders allow the second-fewest yards in the league and lead the CFL with 3.1 sacks per game. Their offense has been limited to just 22 points per game over their last five contests. Take the Under.

      PICK: Under 50
