CFL Betting Notes - Week 12
    David Schwab

This past weekend’s betting action in the CFL started with Winnipeg getting past Edmonton 34-28 on Friday night to pull off the upset as a five-point road underdog. The Blue Bombers now have a game and half lead in the West Division standings.

Saturday’s doubleheader of games got underway with Saskatchewan cruising to a 40-18 victory against Ottawa as a 9 ½-point home favorite. In the night-cap, Hamilton squeezed past British Columbia 13-10 but it could not cover as a 3 ½-point favorite on the road. Week 11 wrapped things up on Sunday with Montreal beating Toronto 28-22 while also failing to cover a seven-point spread on the road.

    Sunday, Sept. 1

Winnipeg Blue Bombers (8-2 SU, 7-3 ATS) at Saskatchewan (6-3 SU, 7-2 ATS)
    Point-spread: Saskatchewan -6 ½
    Total: 48 ½

    Game Overview

This will be the first of a two-game home-and-home series between the top two teams in the West. Winnipeg is 5-0 straight-up in the division this season with a perfect record against the spread facing teams from the West. The total has gone OVER in three of the Blue Bombers’ last four games while averaging 29.7 points during that same four-game span. Chris Streveler got the start at quarterback for an injured Mike Nichols on Friday night and he threw for 89 yards while running for 95 yards and a score on 14 carries. Running back Andrew Harris will miss both games against Saskatchewan due to a league suspension.

The Roughriders come into this series with a five-game winning streak both SU and ATS. The total went OVER 49 points in the win against Ottawa after staying UNDER the closing line in five of their first eight games. This was the third time this season that Saskatchewan put up 40 points or more. Cody Fajardo completed 24 of his 36 passing attempts in Saturday’s win for 241 yards and a score. William Powell led the ground game with 70 yards rushing and a pair of touchdowns on 11 rushing attempts.

    Betting Trends

-- The Roughriders have a 4-2 edge ATS in their last six home games against the Blue Bombers. The total has gone OVER in nine of the last 10 meetings in Saskatchewan between these two West Division rivals.

    Monday, Sept. 2

Toronto Argonauts (1-8 SU, 4-5 ATS) at Hamilton Tiger-Cats (8-2 SU, 6-4 ATS)
    Point-spread: Hamilton -12
    Total: 51 ½

    Game Overview

Toronto heads on the road this week at 0-4 SU in four previous road games this season while going 1-3 ATS. The Argonauts started this already forgettable season with a 64-14 loss to Hamilton as four-point underdogs at home. The total stayed UNDER 53 ½-points in Sunday’s loss and it has stayed UNDER in five of their last eight games. Mcleod Bethel-Thompson put the ball up 47 times against Montreal and he competed 36 passes for 464 yards and two scores and that was still not enough to win this game.

The Tiger-Cats continue to gain ground in the East Division standings with five SU wins in their last six games. They have gone an even 3-3 ATS during this run after failing to cover against BC. Hamilton is 5-3 ATS this season when closing as a favorite. The total has stayed UNDER in seven of its first 10 games played. The Tiger-Cats’ defense recorded seven sacks and two interceptions in Saturday’s grinding victory. Dane Evans continues to get the call at quarterback for an injured Jeramiah Masoli and he threw for 194 yards in that game while completing just 54.8 percent of his 31 passing attempts.

    Betting Trends

-- Hamilton has covered the closing spread in six of its last seven home games against Toronto and it has a 5-1 edge both SU and ATS in the last six meetings overall. The total has gone OVER in the last five matchups.

Edmonton Eskimos (6-4 SU, 4-6 ATS) at Calgary Stampeders (5-4 SU, 3-6 ATS)
    Point-spread: Calgary -2 ½
    Total: 49 ½

    Game Overview

The Eskimos slipped two games off the pace in the West standings with Friday’s loss. This will be the first of a two-game home-and-home against a bitter division rival. Edmonton lost to Calgary 24-18 on Aug. 3 closing as a slight one-point road favorite. The total stayed UNDER 47 points in that game. On Friday night against Winnipeg, Trevor Harris continued to light things up through the air. He ended that game with 430 yards passing after completing 26 of his 40 passing attempts. Harris currently leads the CFL in total passing yards with 3,481.

Calgary went into last week’s bye with back-to-back losses to Winnipeg on the road and to Montreal at home. It is 2-4 ATS over its last six games and 1-4 ATS in five previous home games this year. Bo Levi Mitchell is still listed on the six-game injured list and his status for Monday remains questionable. In his place, Nick Arbuckle has thrown for 2,103 yards and 11 touchdowns against five interceptions. Reginald Begelton has been his top target with 49 receptions for 702 yards and five scores.

    Betting Trends

-- Calgary has a SU five-game winning streak against Edmonton at home and it has covered ATS in six of its last nine home games against the Eskimos. The total has stayed UNDER in four of the last six meetings overall.
