      2019 record: 16-13-1

      Quote of the Day
“It was pretty simple, really. There was a team here today that showed up ready to go, mentally and emotionally. That team was not us.
Georgia football coach Kirby Smart, after Saturday’s loss to South Carolina

      Sunday’s quiz
Where was Mike Leach the football coach before moving to Washington State?

      Saturday’s quiz
Tony Bennett won the national title coaching Virginia LY; before coming to Virginia, Bennett went 32-22 in Pac-12 games coaching at Washington State.

      Friday’s quiz
Tom Brady was drafted as a catcher in the 18th round of the 1995 baseball draft by the Montreal Expos.

      ************************************

      Sunday’s List of 13: Wrapping up a football Saturday…….

      13) First of all, many thanks to Lamarr, Gregg, my friend Bobby and all the nice people at the MGM Grand sportsbook for an excellent day full of football and food.

MGM Grand sportsbook is a good place; comfortable chairs, big screens, and lot of good food options very nearby (deli, pizza, plus very good hamburgers).

      12) South Carolina 20, Georgia 17 OT— This game scrambles the national title picture; Dawgs turned ball over four times (-4), missed a 42-yard FG on the last play of the game.

The loss hurts Notre Dame as much as Georgia, seeing how the Fighting Irish lost in Athens.

      11) Oklahoma 34, Texas 27— Game was only 10-3 at halftime; Sooners outgained Texas 511-252, but they were -2 in turnovers. Hurts ran the ball (17 carries/131 yards) better than he threw it (16-28/235 yards), but he is now 32-2 as a college starter.

      10) UNLV 34, Vanderbilt 10— Mountain West finishes with a 9-10 SU record against Power 5 conferences this year, despite being an underdog in 18 of the 19 games.

      9) Northern Illinois 39, Ohio U 36— Bobcats led 21-10 at halftime, but NIU kicked a 37-yard FG with 0:33 left to post the upset win.

      8) Louisville 62, Wake Forest 59— Demon Deacons scored 28 points in the 4th quarter, the most points an ACC team has ever scored in the 4th quarter of a loss.

      7) Upsets of the Week:
      — Bowling Green (+25) 20, Toledo 7
      — South Carolina (+24) 20, Georgia 17 OT
      — UNLV (+15) 34, Vanderbilt 10
      — Northern Illinois (+7) 39, Ohio U 36
      — Louisville (+6.5) 62, Wake Forest 59
      — Tennessee (+6.5) 20, Mississippi State 10
      — Georgia State (+6.5) 31, Coastal Carolina 21

      6) Iowa State 38, West Virginia 14— Next time a big-$$ school hires a new coach (USC, UCLA?) they should hire Iowa State’s Matt Campbell; very good coach.

      5) Baylor 33, Texas Tech 30 OT— Bears are 6-0; they tied this game on the last play of regulation. Now the schedule gets a lot harder; they still have to play Oklahoma State, TCU, Oklahoma and Texas. They’re already eligible for a bowl game.

      4) Temple 30, Memphis 28— First loss for the 5-1 Tigers, who rallied back from down 23-7 to within 30-28 with 9:58, but that was as close as they got. Total yardage was 492-456 Memphis, but the Tigers turned the ball over four times (-2).

      3) Minnesota 34, Nebraska 7— Golden Gophers are 6-0 for the first time since 2003, figure to be ranked in the top 25 next week for the first time in five years; they ran the ball for 322 yards on a 37-degree day and converted 8-13 third down plays.

      2) Penn State 17, Iowa 12— Hawkeyes lost 10-3 at Michigan last week; they have serious issues on offense. PSU converted 10-19 on third down, QB Clifford ran ball 16 times for 52 yards, mostly on some of the important third down plays.

6-0 Nittany Lions host Michigan and College GameDay next week.

      1) Wisconsin 38, Michigan State 7— If Notre Dame had Wisconsin’s resume, they’d be #1 in the country right now; Badgers have outscored opponents 255-29 with four shutouts, with decisive wins over Michigan and Michigan State- they visit Ohio State October 26.

            AMERICAN ATHLETIC CONFERENCE (AAC)
-- Temple pulled off the minor upset of Memphis, 30-28. While the Owls are 0-2 ATS in two road games, they're a perfect 4-0 ATS at home. ... South Florida pulled off another minor upset in the AAC, topping independent BYU by a 27-23 margin as 4.5-point underdogs. The Bulls evened their record at 3-3 SU, and more importantly they're 4-1 ATS over the past five. The total pushed in this one, and the 'over' is 3-0-1 across the past four for the Bulls. ... Tulsa gave SMU (on a bye this week) a scare in Dallas last week, but that near-miss most have taken a lot of out of them. Navy rolled the Golden Hurricanes by a 45-17 margin. ... Tulane roughed up Connecticut by a 49-7 score, as the Green Wave won and covered their fourth consecutive outing.

            ATLANTIC COAST CONFERENCE (ACC)
-- Virginia took a loss at Miami-Florida by a 17-9 score, underdogs despite holding a ranking. The Hurricanes are now 3-3 SU/ATS with the total 3-3, which is about as inconsistent and hard to figure as it gets. ... Rumors of the death of Clemson was greatly exaggerated, or something like that. They waffled Florida State by a 45-14 score as 26.5-point favorites. The total (61) was a push. It appears that two-week rest thanks to a bye paid off. For the Seminoles, they're 3-3 SU and 2-3-1 ATS with the 'under' cashing in each of their past three outings. ... Duke rebounded against ACC punching bag Georgia Tech, 41-23. The Blue Devils are now 4-1 SU/ATS across the past five outings while the 'over' has hit in each game. ... Hopefully you didn't hold an 'under' ticket in Louisville-Wake Forest. That was a wild one, ending with the Cardinals dealing the Demon Deacons their first loss, 62-59. The 'under' was 3-0 in the past three for Wake before this crazy game.

            BIG TEN
-- Michigan fired out to a big lead at Illinois, leading 28-7 at halftime. However, the Illini put up a fight to close to within 35-25 with 8:57 to go in regulation before the Wolverines notched a touchdown for the final score. ... Indiana smacked Rutgers around by a 35-0 score, covering a 27.5-point number as the 'under' cashed. The Hoosiers have now covered three in a row, and they're a respectable 3-1 SU/ATS in four games at 'The Rock'. ... Minnesota welcomed Nebraska in raw, chilly conditions with a rain/snow mix in the Twin Cities. QB Adrian Martinez (knee) was out for the Cornhuskers, too, while the Gophers ran all over. The Huskers slipped to 4-3 SU and 1-6 ATS, with the 'under' hitting in three in a row, and five of seven. For Minnesota, they're now bowl eligible already, going 6-0 SU. After opening 0-2-1 ATS, they have rattled off three straight covers, too. ... Wisconsin posted their fourth shutout of the season, topping Michigan State 38-0. The Badgers are 6-0 SU/5-1 ATS with the 'under' hitting in each of the past three for the Badgers.

            BIG 12
-- There were just three games in the conference, including the neutral-site Red River rivalry game between Oklahoma-Texas. As usual this rivalry game didn't disappoint, as the Sooners held off the Longhorns 34-27. Texas has covered in back-to-back games for the first time this season, slipping to 4-2 SU/ATS with the 'over' also 4-2 after this under result. ... Baylor held off Texas Tech 33-30 in overtime. The Bears are a surprising 6-0 SU, but 3-3 ATS, with the over/under splitting 3-3 as well. The 'over' is 3-0 in the past three for the Red Raiders. ... Iowa State went to West Virginia and hammered the Mountaineers, 38-14. The Cyclones improved to 4-1 ATS across the past five outings.

            CONFERENCE USA
-- Florida Atlantic won a lower-scoring 28-13 game against Middle Tennessee, 28-13, exacting a little revenge after a loss in Murfreesboro last season. The Owls have rattled off four straight wins, and they're also 4-2 ATS, too. ... Western Kentucky surprised Army 17-8, and the Hilltoppers have now won and covered three in a row with the 'under' hitting in each contest. They have averaged just 19.0 PPG while allowing 8.0 PPG during the three-game span. ... Louisiana Tech stepped out of conference and clubbed Massachusetts, 69-21. The Bulldogs have rattled off five consecutive victories since losing at Texas to open the season, and they have covered three of the past four. ... UAB routed Texas-San Antonio by a 33-13 count, picking up their fifth win in six tries while improving to 4-1 ATS over the past five. They have scored 31 or more points in four of the past five, too.

            MID-AMERICAN (MAC)

-- Toledo was supposed to mow over rival Bowling Green, but a funny thing happened at Doyt Perry Stadium. The 26.5-point underdog Falcons rolled to a 20-7 victory over the Rockets, picking up just their second win in six tries, and their first against an FBS opponent. The 'under' is 5-1 in six outings for the Falcons this season. ... Kent State won the 'Wagon Wheel' rivalry game against Akron, 26-3. The Golden Flashes are 3-3 SU/ATS, but this was their first road victory and cover in four road tries. Of course, this was their first non-Power 5 opponent away from home, too. The Zips, meanwhile, are a dismal 0-6 SU/ATS. ... Ball State left Rynearson Stadium at Eastern Michigan with a 29-23 victory in tow. EMU slipped to 3-3 SU/2-4 ATS, and they have failed to cover in three in a row. ... Western Michigan romped Miami-Ohio by a 38-16 score as the 'under' just came in. The Broncos have alternated wins and losses in each of their seven games so far, and they have also alternated covers and non-covers. If the pattern continues, a loss and non-cover is coming at EMU next week.

            MOUNTAIN WEST
-- Boise State lost freshman QB Hank Bachmeier (lower body) against Hawaii, but they continued to roll along as the Group of Five favorite. They topped the Rainbow Warriors, 59-37. Boise State is now 6-0 SU and 4-1-1 ATS with the over/under splitting 3-3. They'll head to BYU next week. ... UNLV surprised Vanderbilt by a 34-10 score, covering as 15 1/2-point favorites. The Rebels snapped a four-game losing streak while picking up their first win against an FBS opponent this season, and they're now 2-1 ATS in three road outings. The 'under' is 4-1 across the past five for UNLV, too. ... San Jose State slipped 41-38 at Nevada, as they're now 3-3 SU while going 3-0-1 ATS across thye past four. ... San Diego State moved to 5-1 SU/4-2 ATS with a 26-22 slugfest against Wyoming. The Aztecs have covered four of the past five. The 'over' in their game on Saturday snapped a 5-0 'under' streak to start the season.

            PAC-12
-- USC put up a good fight on the road against Notre Dame, falling 30-27 but covering the 10.5-point number. The Trojans have dropped three of the past four, and they have alternated covers and non-covers in all six outings. The 'under' is also 4-0 in the past four games heading into next week's game at home against Arizona. ... As far as the Wildcats are concerned, they were roughed up 51-27 by Washington. Arizona had their four-game win streak snapped while slipping to 2-3-1 ATS. The Huskies improved to 5-2 SU/ATS, rebounding after their loss at Stanford last week. ... Oregon spanked Colorado 45-3, as Buffaloes QB Steven Montez tossed four interceptions to help out the Ducks. UO has won five in a row since losing to Auburn in the opener, and they're the only hope of the Pac-12. The 'under' has cashed in four in a row. ... Washington State dropped a 38-34 game at Arizona State, and the Cougars have dropped three in a row. That 67-63 loss to UCLA has really taken a lot out of the Cougs. They are now 0-3 SU in the conference, and they have failed to cover five in a row.

            SOUTHEASTERN (SEC)
-- Florida went toe-to-toe with LSU into the second half, tied 28-28. However, the Bayou Bengals pulled away late for the 42-28 win and push at most shops. The 'over' is now 5-1 in the six games for LSU. ... The other big game of the day was in Athens, as South Carolina shocked the world with a 20-17 win in double-overtime against Georgia. The Bulldogs went from national title contenders to facing Florida on Nov. 2 in Jacksonville in an elimination game in the SEC East race. This loss might still not quite eliminate them from the playoffs, but it was a tough blow. ... Tennessee won at home, topping MississippiState, 20-10 as the 'under' easily hit. It was their first win in four tries at home against an FBS opponent, and just their second cover in six outings. ... Missouri topped Mississippi in a surprisingly high-scoring battle, as the Tigers have won five in a row. They just missed the cover, snapping a 4-0 ATS run.

            SUN BELT
-- Georgia State went on the road and topped Coastal Carolina 31-21. as slight underdogs. The Panthers are 4-2 SU and 3-1-2 ATS overall, as they inch closer to bowl eligibility. ... Appalachian State won 17-7 in a surprisingly low-scoring game at Louisiana-Lafayette, covering for the third straight game while staying a perfect 5-0 SU and keeping their Group of Five hopes alive.

            Bad Beats
-- The worst bad beat of the weekend happened with the total in Waco. Texas Tech scored a touchdown to go ahead 20-17 with 1:37 to go, with a total of 59. Baylor forced overtime with a field goal with no time remaining in regulation. Overtime was a killer, as both teams exchanged touchdowns in the first OT to make it 27-27. The Red Raiders booted a field goal to make it 30-27. The under could still come through with a defensive stop, but...well, you know. Baylor scored the game-winning TD, making it 33-30, flipping the 'under' to an undeserved 'over'.

-- It might have been a bit early for a bad beat at 5:43, but if you have Florida you were on the right side most of the evening. Most shops closed this game at 14, so it ended a push. LSU scored a 54-yard TD pass with 5:43 to go up 42-28 after a seesaw battle most of the night. To be honest, there weren't a ton of bad beat situations in this week, which is nice for a change.

-- Marshall scored a touchdown with 3:55 to go, flipping an under to an over against Old Dominion. Again, it was just an unfortunate loss, but not a textbook bad beat, but it still stings nonetheless.

            • Hot & Not Report - Week 8
              October 14, 2019
              By Matt Blunt

              Week of October 14th

There were some strong results if you followed last week's piece that touched on NFL divisional games, as the majority of those trends held true in Week 6.

Road teams managed to sweep the board against the spread with Carolina, Cincinnati and San Francisco all cashing tickets on Sunday, with the Lions the only remaining team in that spot tonight on MNF. Carolina dominated Tampa Bay from start to finish, the Bengals were able to sneak through the back door against Baltimore, and San Francisco brought their best stuff to LA in beating the Rams in a game that many viewed as a measuring stick for the now 5-0 SU 49ers.

At the same time, NFL division games staying 'under' the number posted a 2-1 record as well on Sunday, with only the Panthers/Bucs game over in London sailing 'over' the number. Given the different circumstances of that game with no true home field – and London games tendency to go over as the NFL wants to make sure they put on a show over there – on paper that was the easiest division game to avoid going 'under' on the Week 6 card, especially with it being the first divisional rematch game of the year and the flip-flop theory seemingly alive and well in that regard again. Hindsight is always 20-20 though, but the good news is that had you played all three of those games you'd still have come out on top.

This week I'm taking a break from the pro game as there is one specific conference in college football that deserves noting. So I'd like to wish a happy Columbus Day to everyone - and a happy Thanksgiving to all you Canadians out there – as Columbus (the place), has a tie to this week's piece as we look at what's been going on in the Big 10.

              Who's Hot

Home teams in Big 10 games are 11-2 SU the past two weeks – 9-4 ATS in that span
It's been quite the 14 days for Big 10 teams that play in front of their adoring fans, as that SU run is pretty impressive. Home sides went 5-1 SU in conference play this past week, after going 6-1 SU in Week 6. And the 9-4 ATS record could have been a little better considering Penn State's 35-7 win over Purdue in Week 6 missed out on cashing an ATS ticket by the hook.

What makes a run like this intriguing from a betting perspective is the six Big 10 games we've got on the schedule this upcoming week. It all starts with those boys from Columbus, Ohio – the Ohio State Buckeyes – heading out on the road on Friday night to face a Northwestern team as heavy, heavy chalk. Ohio State is currently laying 27.5 points on the road for that game, and that's a lofty number for any road team to cover in today's game, let alone one going up against quite a run for home teams within the conference right now.

The Buckeyes aren't the only Big 10 team laying heavy chalk on the road either this week, as Wisconsin's spread is even bigger (-30.5) for their road trip to Illinois, and Minnesota is laying about four TD's for their contest at Rutgers. Given that the outright record of those three road teams – Ohio State, Wisconsin, and Minnesota – is 18-0 SU and their opponents sit at 2-13 SU, the numbers are somewhat warranted, but don't be surprise to see at least one of those heavy chalk visitors fail to cover their lofty spread.

On the flip side of that equation we've got two other Big 10 games where the home team is laying chalk, the most notable being Penn State has they host Michigan under the lights. The “September Warriors” in the Iowa Hawkeyes – every year Iowa beats up on cupcakes and Iowa State in September to earn a Top 25 ranking and promptly loses it in October when the competition level rises – are the other team laying chalk with Purdue coming to town. Indiana/Maryland is yet to have a line as of this writing but that's the other Big 10 game on the board this week.

But it's the Michigan/Penn State game that becomes highly intriguing given this run for Big 10 home teams, because Michigan is already a program that's been labelled as chokers once again this year. There is never any love for Harbaugh's squad in these type of big games, and with the number on Penn State currently climbing to approach double digits, it will be very interesting to see how this game shakes out. My initial reaction is that if there ever was a game to go against a run by the home teams like this, this would be it, but you can't deny there are plenty of good things (revenge, being undefeated, being at home) working for the Nittany Lions here as well.

Penn State backers will assuredly use this great run by Big 10 home teams as an additional layer of support for why the Nittany Lions are getting their support, but whether that ends up being the right side, we've got six days to debate it and then find out.

              Who's Not

Backing 'Overs' in Big 10 games the past two weeks – 2-11 O/U run against closing number
Similar to the great 'under' run in division games in the NFL that was touched on last week, this Big 10 conference games have been an 'under' bettors haven the past 14 days.

A run like that on low-scoring games is a combination of superior teams blowing out inferior teams, keeping those weaker foes off the scoreboard and then running out the clock with reserves, but also quality foes – especially on defense – doing battle with one another as well.

This week's card has a bit of both in that regard as we've got all those huge road favorites that were already discussed likely to fall on the former side of things if things go according to plan for them. However, if those home teams like Northwestern, Illinois, and Rutgers do end up keeping that trend going for home sides, you've got to figure they'd do so by putting up a few scores to put a scare in their opponent. It's what we saw from Illinois this past week when they hosted Michigan, and I wouldn't put it past them or Northwestern to have a similar type of effort this week.

Then again, Ohio State and Wisconsin could put the clamps down on defense rather early and cruise to blowout wins (as expected) that fail to see enough total points be put up to break this great run of 'unders.'

The Michigan/Penn State game is likely to see some initial 'under' love when totals come out as they fit the style of two elite defenses squaring off with points being at a premium. Both of those teams were on the right side of that style of game against Iowa the past two weeks, but the series history between the two schools is also on a 4-0 O/U run the past four years, and that includes the loser scoring 13 or fewer points in each of the past three meetings.

Yet, just like the initial feel of going against the home team trend for this game that I talked about earlier, this would be the one game where I'd strongly consider going against this 'under' trend as well. Obviously we've got to wait to see what number gets posted for this total, but it's definitely something to consider.

Tuesday’s List of 13: Nobody asked me, but…….

                13) Watching the Rams’ ugly performance in Sunday’s loss to San Francisco, it dawned on me that I should research how other teams have done the year after losing the Super Bowl.

From 2001-08, only one of eight Super Bowl losers made the playoffs again the next year, but from 2009-18, nine of ten teams did make the playoffs, even going 6-3 SU in their first playoff game that second season. Only one of those teams (NE 2018) got back to the Super Bowl.

We’ve talked a lot here about how competitive the NFL is, and lot of small things have to go in your favor for a team to have success; I’m guessing the schedule makers are also less forgiving to the conference champs. Success is fragile, that much we know.

                12) I’ll say this; enjoy success while you can. Detroit Lions won three NFL titles in the 50’s, but have never made it to a Super Bowl, and haven’t won a playoff game since 1991.

                11) If I was an NFL coach and my 3rd-string QB was making his first NFL start, I’d want my Hall of Fame QB (who is currently hurt) to go on that road trip, to help mentor the rookie QB.

But Ben Roethlisberger didn’t go to LA this weekend; coach Tomlin simply said “Injured players don’t make road trips”

                10) San Diego is the 8th-largest city in America; why did the Chargers leave there? It makes no sense to me; what happens if they don’t sell a decent amount of tickets in the new LA dome next year? Can they go back to San Diego?

Can’t be much fun for the Charger players, when fans at their “home” games are mostly rooting for the other team.

                9) Underdogs went 9-3 ATS Sunday; gambling is difficult.

                8) Jay Gruden said over the weekend that coaches without final say over his team’s roster have to manage different staff and roster dynamics; “That’s the hardest part of coaching in the National Football League, in my opinion.”

That from a guy who just got fired, so he would know.

                7) Back when I was in college 40 or so years ago, I got mononucleosis and was off the grid for 2-3 weeks; can’t remember how much weight I lost, but I do remember that I was 168 scrawny pounds when I went back to school, having probably lost around 20 pounds. Many moons ago, and if you know me, there was no problem regaining all that weight.

Was surprised to read that Sam Darnold only lost three or four pounds during his bout with mono. Protein shakes must do the trick; he played really well against Dallas Sunday.

                6) One thing the NFL need to fix is how over-officiated their games are; former refs are TV stars now, pass interference instant replay is a joke (they almost never overturn a PI call/non-call), there is a flag thrown on most every kick return. Stop throwing so many flags!!!!

One thing bugs me a lot; stop calling taunting penalties!!! Or if you call them, just throw a flag, call it on both sides as a warning for guys to STFU, and move on. Coaches will tell guys to shut up and the game can go on. No one pays to watch the officials.

When Carson Wentz blew his knee out two years ago, it happened on a drive that should’ve ended three plays earlier, but the ref called a taunting penalty on a DB after a failed third down play. Eagles would’ve kicked a FG had the taunting penalty not been called, and Wentz wouldn’t have gotten hurt.

                5) Quarterbacks and guys who run with/catch the ball get all the credit, but if your offensive line isn’t strong, your offense has no chance, especially if the QB isn’t mobile. When an OL struggles, people are quick to point fingers, but they’re reluctant to give credit in the good times.

                4) Couple of quick NFL trends:
                — Chiefs covered 11 of their last 13 AFC West road games.
                — Last 12 times Tennessee failed to cover consecutive games, they went 11-1 ATS in the third game.

                3) NFL TV ratings are up 6% so far this season.

                2) Philip Rivers’ career record against the spread:
                — As a favorite: 64-71-3
                — As an underdog or pick ‘em: 41-31-3

                1) Packers 23, Lions 22
                — Detroit got inside Packers’ 10-yard line on first three drives, scored 13 points.
                — Lions are 2-2-1 despite a +6 turnover ratio.
                — Loss ends Detroit’s 4-game series win streak.

                — Green Bay won despite a minus-3 turnover ratio (0-3).
                — Packers outgained Detroit 447-229, but scored only 13 points on four red zone drives.
                — Lions lost despite a 12-yard advantage in field position.

                • Pick Six: Which coaches need strong finishes to keep jobs?
                  October 14, 2019
                  By The Associated Press

Halfway through the season there has already been a coaching change in major college football.

Rutgers fired Chris Ash before the calendar flipped to October. Who else is a candidate to join Ash in buyout life?

                  CLAY HELTON, USC (3-3)

The Trojans are about where they figured to be with a difficult schedule to start the season. Helton has used three starting quarterbacks, pulled off a nice win at home against No. 13 Utah and played Notre Dame competitively in South Bend. USC has played hard and it wouldn't be shocking if the Trojans still managed to win the Pac-12 South. Short of winning out, it probably won't be enough for Helton. USC is still searching for an athletic director. After the season, the first order of business for the new boss will be to evaluate the football coach and determine whether he can make USC an elite program again. After that, maybe call Urban Meyer.

                  DEREK MASON, Vanderbilt (1-5)

Expectations at Vandy are modest. Get to some bowl games and try to avoid a bunch of embarrassing loses. Mason had done OK fulfilling those requirements through five seasons (two bowl games, 24-38 overall and 9-31 SEC). This season has been a wreck and it's difficult to imagine how a team that just lost at home to UNLV by 24 points will salvage respectability. Vanderbilt's patience is not without limits.

                  LOVIE SMITH, Illinois (2-4)

The Illini have taken baby steps forward in three seasons under Smith, but not much has changed this year. This was athletic director Josh Whitman's idea of a splashy hire and he might be inclined to cut Smith some extra slack if the 61-year-old can close strong. If not, Whitman will probably need to cut his losses and try again.

                  CHARLIE STRONG, USF (3-3)

USF ended last season on a six-game losing streak and lost the first two this year (the Bulls have now won two straight). Strong is in a precarious spot in his third season. Athletic director Michael Kelly did not hire Strong. The coach has two years left on his original five-year contract. Having a coach go into a season with only two years left on a deal would be unusual and not an ideal way to hit the recruiting trail. So the question is not really can Strong win enough in the second half to keep his job, but can he win enough to earn an extension?

                  STEVE ADDAZIO, Boston College (3-3)

Addazio received an unenthusiastic two-year extension after last season, his fifth seven-win campaign in six years at BC. The Eagles started this season 2-0 with a victory against Virginia Tech, but since they have beaten only Rutgers and their most memorable moment was being on the wrong side of a beat down at home by Kansas. The ACC being what it is (not so great) maybe Addazio can cobble together bowl eligibility, but if not it is probably time for both BC and him to try something else.

                  MOUNTAIN WEST COACHES

Things are trending toward three openings in the conference.

At New Mexico, former Notre Dame coach Bob Davie, 65, had a serious health scare earlier this season, but even before that it seemed likely that his eighth season in Albuquerque would be his final one. New Mexico looks on its way to a third straight losing season, and sixth overall under Davie.

UNLV's Tony Sanchez was basically given a bowl-or-bust ultimatum by his athletic director at the end of last season. The Rebels are 2-4, though a win at Vanderbilt maybe provides a hint of hope for turnaround under the fifth-year coach.

Colorado State is 2-5 in the fifth season of Mike Bobo's tenure, which started with three straight seasons of 7-6 overall and 5-3 in conference play. That looks as if it might have been the peak for Bobo, who also struggled with health issues last season.

                  EXTRA POINTS

There is a bunch of second-year coaches off to rocky starts and some fans have already had enough. The list includes Chip Kelly (UCLA), Willie Taggart (Florida State), Jeremy Pruitt (Tennessee), Chad Morris (Arkansas), Joe Moorhead (Mississippi State) and even Scott Frost (Nebraska). Firing a coach after two seasons is unlikely even in an age where patience is nearly nonexistent. Of this group, maybe Taggart could get Florida State officials to seriously consider a $17 million buyout if the Seminoles (3-3) miss out on a bowl game again.

                  • Pick Six: College football's best moments at halfway point
                    October 15, 2019
                    By The Associated Press

The Southeastern Conference's West Division has the top two teams in the country in Alabama and LSU, defending national champion Clemson is right behind them and a host of others are lurking at the midway point of the season.

Jalen Hurts has made the most of his transfer to Oklahoma and become the Heisman Trophy front-runner. Joe Burrow has turned LSU into one of the hottest offenses going. Justin Fields has proved to be a smooth operator at Ohio State. And Auburn freshman Bo Nix introduced himself as the leader of the next wave of young quarterbacks.

Enough of the big picture stuff, though.

Here's a look at the best snapshots from the season so far.

                    THE GREAT ESCAPE

Clemson nearly saw a 19-game win streak end when North Carolina pushed the Tigers to the brink Sept. 28. The Tigers, ranked No. 1 at the time and 27-point favorites, were up just 21-20 with 1:17 left after Javonte Williams scored for the Tar Heels. Mack Brown, in the first year of his second go-round at Carolina, decided to go for two and the win, but quarterback Sam Howell was stopped short on his option run. Clemson recovered the onside kick, ran out the clock - and breathed a sigh of relief.

                    ONE FOR THE BIG FELLAS

Texas' Samuel Cosmi lived every offensive lineman's dream when he caught a lateral from Sam Ehlinger and rumbled 12 yards for a touchdown in a 42-31 win over West Virginia on Oct. 5. Cosmi lined up in his usual spot at left tackle and, at the snap, took a few steps back while Ehlinger rolled right. As West Virginia's Reese Donahue closed in on Ehlinger, the quarterback flipped the ball left and backward to Cosmi. The 6-foot-7, 300-pound sophomore caught the ball, tucked it in his left arm and ran down the sideline, barreling into the Mountaineers' Darius Stills as he bulled his way into the end zone.

                    THE FAKE KNEEL

Tulane looked as if it would be content to go to overtime with its game against Houston tied 31-all on Sept. 19. Looks are deceiving. With the ball at the Tulane 29 and 18 seconds left in regulation, quarterback Justin McMillan took two quick kneel-downs. On third down, McMillan faked a kneel-down, slipped the ball to tailback Amare Jones and ran right. Meanwhile, Jones took off left and picked up 18 yards. On the next play McMillan threw a 53-yard touchdown pass to Jalen McClesky for the 38-31 win.

                    GOAL LINE STAND

California used a goal-line stand as time ran out to beat Mississippi 28-20 on Sept. 21, the Bears' first road win over an SEC school since 1977 and the Pac-12's first since 2010. The Rebels started their final drive at their 10 with 2:45 left. Freshman backup quarterback John Rhys Plumlee completed six straight passes to get Ole Miss to the Cal 10. On fourth-and-goal inside the 1, senior linebacker Evan Weaver swooped in from the outside and stopped Plumlee on a sneak as the clock hit zeroes for the last and most important of his career-high 22 tackles.

                    BIG COMEBACK

UCLA rallied from a 32-point deficit in the middle of the third quarter to beat Washington State 67-63 on the road Sept. 21 in the highest-scoring Pac-12 game in history. Dorian Thompson-Robinson threw for four touchdowns and ran for two others during the comeback, which saw the Bruins outscore WSU 50-17 in the final 19 minutes. UCLA capitalized on four WSU fumbles in the second half. In 2017, UCLA erased a 34-point deficit to beat Texas A&M 45-44. The largest Football Bowl Subdivision comeback was in 2006, when Michigan State beat Northwestern 41-38 after trailing 38-3 in the third quarter.

                    KING FOR A DAY

Perhaps the best feel-good story, eventually tempered by a social media flap, came off the field with 23-year-old Iowa State fan Carson King raising almost $3 million for the University of Iowa Stead Family Children's Hospital. King attended ESPN's ''College GameDay'' show in Ames, Iowa, on Sept. 14 and held up a handmade sign reading ''Busch Light Supply Needs Replenished.'' The handle for his Venmo mobile payment account was included. Donations far exceeding his expectations came in, and he decided to send the money to the hospital. All was well and good until a Des Moines Register reporter discovered racist tweets King sent as a high school sophomore, prompting King to apologize. The reporter was fired when he also was found to have sent racist tweets.

                          • College football Week 8 opening odds: Early bettors peek at Penn State in clash with Michigan
                            Patrick Everson

College football rolls into Week 8, and in a change of pace, the biggest game is in the Big 10, rather than the Southeastern Conference. We check in on that matchup and three others, with insights from Matt Chaprales, head of content for PointsBet USA.

No. 16 Michigan Wolverines at No. 7 Penn State Nittany Lions (-7.5)

Penn State is undefeated and very much in early College Football Playoff discussion heading into this prime-time game in Happy Valley. The Nittany Lions (6-0 SU, 4-2 ATS) engaged in a defensive slog at Iowa in Week 7, coming away with a 17-12 victory as 3.5-point favorites.

Michigan cannot take another loss and reasonably expect to stay in the CFP conversation, thanks to its Week 4 blowout setback at Wisconsin. In Week 7, the Wolverines (5-1 SU, 2-4 ATS) blew almost all of a 28-0 lead at Illinois, with the score 28-25 early in the fourth quarter. Jim Harbaugh’s squad ultimately won 42-25, but fell short as 24.5-point faves.

“Early action has laid the 7.5 with Penn State, meaning the first move looks like it would be to 8,” Chaprales said. “Either way, with two high-profile teams battling under the lights, we’re anticipating good two-way action on this game.”

No. 12 Oregon Ducks at No. 23 Washington Huskies (+2.5)

At midseason, Oregon is the Pac-12’s best hope for a CFP bid, making this contest extremely important. The Ducks (5-1 SU, 3-3 ATS) bounced back from a season-opening neutral-site loss to Auburn by winning five in a row. In Week 7, Oregon hammered Colorado 45-3 laying 23.5 points at home.

Washington fully expected to be a CFP contender this year, but two outright losses as double-digit chalk – home against California and at Stanford – shattered those expectations. The Huskies (5-2 SU and ATS) followed the Stanford setback by ripping Arizona 51-27 laying 6 points on the road in Week 7.

“Oregon enters with the superior body of work, while Washington has already stumbled a few times in conference play, losing twice as big favorites,” Chaprales said. “Given that, we opened the Ducks as short road favorites and wouldn’t be surprised if this number moves further in their direction.”

That’s exactly what happened by Monday afternoon, with the line ticking up to Oregon -3.

No. 9 Florida Gators at South Carolina Gamecocks (Off)

Florida acquitted itself well in a very difficult two-seek stretch of SEC play, but couldn’t muster two victories. Following a Week 6 home win over Auburn, the Gators (6-1 SU, 4-3 ATS) went to Louisiana State as 14.5-point pups and were in it almost the entire way before bowing out 42-28.

South Carolina wouldn’t normally be worth a mention in this space, except that it’s coming off a monster upset and is 4-1 ATS in its last five games. The Gamecocks (3-3 SU, 4-2 ATS) were 20.5-point road ‘dogs against unbeaten Georgia, but came away with a 20-17 double-overtime victory.

Gamecocks QB Ryan Hilinski left in the third quarter of the big win, due to a knee sprain. It appears he will play this week, but it’s not yet certain.

“This game is currently off the board, pending the status of Hilinski,” Chaprales said. “Assuming he’s a go, it will be interesting to see how the public reacts to this team, on the heels of one of the biggest upsets in recent memory.”

If Hilinski indeed is cleared to play, Chaprales expects to open Florida around -6.

No. 18 Baylor Bears at Oklahoma State Cowboys (-3.5)

Oklahoma is rightly all the rage in the Big 12, but flying under the radar is an unbeaten Baylor team. The Bears (6-0 SU, 3-3 ATS) barely kept their perfect record intact in Week 7, edging Texas Tech 33-30 in double overtime giving 10.5 points at home.

Oklahoma State, coming off a bye week, certainly knows a little bit about Texas Tech, as well. The Cowboys (4-2 SU, 5-1 ATS) went to Lubbock as 9-point Week 6 favorites and exited with a 45-39 outright loss.

“This game opened Oklahoma State -3.5 and ticked down to 3 on the strength of some early Baylor interest,” Chaprales said. “The Bears have impressed in a weak Big 12 so far, but the market remains a bit skeptical about their 6-0 start, evidenced by them catching points against a team that’s dropped two of its past three.”

                                **********

                                Armadillo: Wednesday's List of 13: Mid-week musings……

                                13) Washington 7, St Louis 4— At one point in May, the Nationals were 19-31, 8.5 games out of first place, only 1.5 games ahead of the woeful Marlins. Manager Dave Martinez seemed certain to be fired, but now he is here, managing the first Wild Card team to make a World Series since Giants/Royals in 2014.

                                12) Sitting on the airplane coming home last night, and find out the Rams cleaned house a little Tuesday; starting CB Aqib Talib was put on the IR, the other starting CB Marcus Peters got traded to the Ravens for a reserve LB.

Later LA acquired a reserve lineman from the Browns, and they traded a couple of #1 picks to the Jaguars for disgruntled star CB Jalen Ramsey, who hopefully now will be gruntled.

                                11) Rams took QB Jared Goff in the first round of the 2016 draft; here are their 1st round picks since then:

2017: Traded to Tennessee to help get the pick they used to take Goff.
2018: Traded to New England for WR Brandin Cooks.
2019: Traded to Atlanta for multiple lower picks.
2020-21: Traded to Jacksonville for Jalen Ramsey.

                                10) Now that I’m back from my excellent vacation to Las Vegas, a story from my 2nd night there; I’m leaving the person’s name out, because it isn’t relevant or right, but this was kind of fun.

I’m sitting at the Vdara hotel bar, shooting the breeze with some guy from Sacramento who owns a lot of buildings and is apparently wealthy; his very attractive wife is sitting next to him, laughing at his quips as he tells me in detail how he met her a few years ago, they fell in love, they both dumped their spouses, and finally got married a few months ago. Alrighty then.

A couple of women sit at the bar near us, and Mr Sacramento starts bantering with them; the women are old high school friends from Florida who are having a reunion. Mr Sacramento asks them if they’re from Canada; I’m not sure why.

At one point, one of the two women asks us, “Any of you baseball fans?” I say that I am, and she points to her friend— “This is Player X’s mom”. Player X is a major league player who happened to have been on my fantasy team the last couple years.

I quickly impress Mrs X by blurting out some useless info about her son, then tell her I traded him in April, before his best hot streak of the season. She mocked me for trading her son, but we became buddies and talked baseball and other stuff for the next hour or so.

Unfortunately for me she is married and a nice lady, so it ended there, but it made me laugh at myself. Also, the two guys I got for her son are both OK players, the pitcher I got is a good prospect.

Originally called that a quick story, but had to delete the word quick. Moving right along……

                                9) Win for me; flew home during a Presidential debate, so I missed it. Also missed couple of playoff games, but followed along on Twitter on the airplane. Politicians? Not so much.

                                8) NFL underdogs are 55-35-1 ATS so far this season, 40-20-1 on the road.

                                7) From AdamJT: Dallas Cowboys are the only NFL team that hasn’t started a drive in its opponent’s territory so far this season. The other 31 teams have started an average of 5.9 drives in opponents’ territory, and four teams have started 10+.

                                6) Tennessee Titans will start Ryan Tannehill at QB Sunday against the struggling Chargers, benching Marcus Mariota; if my favorite NFL team had Tannehill/Mariota at QB, I wouldn’t be a happy human.

Tannehill was a wide receiver until his junior year at Texas A&M; maybe he should play for the Bengals, since it was Mike Sherman who made Tannehill a QB, and Bengals’ coach Zac Taylor is Sherman’s son-in-law.

                                5) First college basketball game on CBS College Sports November 5: Utah @ Nevada, which is a pretty good game for opening night, Steve Alford’s first game coaching the Wolf Pack.

                                4) Phil Mickelson is ranked #47 in the world this week; he hasn’t been ranked outside the top-50 in the World Golf Rankings since November 28, 1993.

                                3) Major League Baseball plans to open a 17,000-square-foot flagship retail store in Manhattan next summer, at 50th St and 6th Ave; what took them so long?

                                2) Cardinals’ manager Mike Shildt mentioned the other day how data exists showing that the average fly ball was traveling 4.5 fewer feet during the playoffs, as opposed to the regular season.

                                1) Washington winning the NLCS leaves the Seattle Mariners as the only major league team that has never played in a World Series.
