    • Armadillo: Monday's six-pack

Average ticket prices for college football games this year:

      — Georgia $487

      — Ohio State $352

      — Michigan $285

      — Notre Dame $276

      — Alabama $249

      — Nebraska $232

      **********

Armadillo: Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports weekend……

      13) Kansas City Royals won the World Series four years ago; they struck out 973 times the entire regular season.

Today is July 22, and Seattle/Texas have already struck out more than that this season.

      12) Houston’s Yuli Gurriel has 13 homers and 28 RBIs in his last 22 games; he’s homered in five of his last six home games.

      11) Boston’s Rick Porcello won his last three starts, despite allowing 16 runs in 17.2 IP; Red Sox scored 50 runs in his last four starts.

      10) Chances are you had a better Sunday than golfer JB Holmes, who started out 66-68-69 at the British Open, but then imploded with an 87 Thursday, shooting a 46 on the back nine.

      9) Run differential is a misleading stat; Arizona is +63, the Giants are -42, but both teams are 50-50, and thats the only stat the really counts.

      8) Kawhi Leonard was at the Pacquiao-Thurman fight in Las Vegas Saturday night and was wearing one of his championship rings from the Spurs. Now you know why some of these guys go around with bodyguards; thats a pretty expensive ring.

      7) Baseball stuff:
      — Giants DFA’d P Derek Holland.
      — Orioles DFA’d Keon Broxton.
      — Rays put OF Kevin Keirmaier (thumb) on the IL.
      — Rockies DFA’d 1B Mark Reynolds

      6) Giants 3, Mets 2 (12)— On June 29, San Francisco was 35-47; the only thing that mattered was where they were trading Madison Bumgarner. Now the Giants are 50-50, 2.5 games out of a playoff spot and maybe Bumgarner ain’t going anywhere.

      5) Colorado 8, New York 4— Bronx Bombers are 10-6 this month; 0-4 when Paxton starts, 10-2 with everyone else. Rockies lost 13 of their last 16 games.

      4) Orioles 5, Red Sox 0— Boston gets one hit in 7.1 innings against Asher Wojciechowski, and you have to think the Red Sox are going to make a big splash on the trade market. Red Sox are three games out of a playoff spot- they play New York next weekend.

      3) Phil Mickelson and Eldrick Woods have played in 83 majors together; this week was first time they both missed the cut in the same major.

      2) If you don’t think time flies, NFL training camps open this week. Can’t even imagine what football was like in the old days, when teams did two-a-day practices in pads in this heat, for most of the summer.

      1) Nothing against Harold Baines, but he is a Hall of Famer and Dave Parker isn’t?

Week 6 CFL Betting Preview (Saturday, 7:00 p.m. ET)
        BC Lions vs Saskatchewan Roughriders

Week 6 of the CFL season gets going on Thursday with the winless Toronto Argonauts in Calgary to take on the Stampeders, but it's a matchup between two other struggling teams that closes out the week that gets our attention this week.

The BC Lions went out and made the biggest splash in free agency by signing QB Mike Reilly, hired Calgary's DC DeVone Claybrooks to help sure things up defensively, and it's all gone wrong for the Lions through the first five weeks of the year.

Mike Reilly has been sacked the most times of any QB in the league, he and the rest of his offense got embarrassed at home last time out in a 33-6 loss to Edmonton, and defensively the Lions allow the most points per game of any team in the West at 31.6/game. It's all been ugly for BC this year, and at 1-4 SU – their only win being a walk-off rouge against the lowly Toronto Argos, they'd better turn things around soon.

Saskatchewan hasn't been much better at 1-3 SU with their only win coming over Toronto as well, although there were two close road losses to begin the year out East that put them in this position. A 37-10 defeat in their last outing (at home) against Calgary was rather embarrassing as well, and hopefully for Riders fans, the fact that they had Week 5 off is probably a good thing. It's now up to the Riders to show that they used that extra prep time wisely and continue to add to the Lions misery in 2019.

So after last week's play on the 'over' in the Montreal/Ottawa game pushed our record to 3-1 ATS on the year, where should your money be going in the finale for Week 6? Let's break it down:

        YTD: 3-1 ATS

CFL Odds: Saskatchewan (-5); Total set at 50.5

Betting lines for Week 6 came out on Tuesday afternoon and if you are a big believer in incorporating handicapping the market just has much as handicapping teams as I am, it's hard to ignore what we've seen from the market for this game already. Saskatchewan opened as a less than FG favorite for this home game off their bye (-2/2.5) and was promptly bet up and up until it reached it's current number. The total got hit on the low side for a move of a full point (51.5 to 50.5) as well.

That's quite an early statement on what the market really thinks of this BC Lions team as there is a strong belief that there is no end in sight to their 2019 struggles, and expecting Reilly and company to all of a sudden turn it around on the road against a rested team is something nobody wants to get behind.

That's an understandable position for sure, as there hasn't been much of anything good from the Lions in any of their four games. Their lone win saw them blow a lead late and win on a missed FG, so even in a positive result, it's not like things went well for them. Obviously it's still early in the week and we could very well see some buyback on BC at this number, or if it gets higher, but like the rest of the market, I'm not interested in backing the Lions here.

At the same time, while taking a home team off a bye is a favorable situation to get behind, especially with a Roughriders team that's got high expectations for 2019, they've got to go out and show that they can play at a consistently high level as well. That blowout loss to Calgary was a dud of a game in all regards, and it really feels like Saskatchewan has simply been trying to find their footing since the cheap shot their starting QB Zach Collaros took early in Week 1 put him on the shelf. Hopefully the bye week helped with that process as they've moved on with Cody Fajardo under center, as even Farjardo's probably feeling more comfortable being the guy with each passing week.

But teams off a bye week this year after having played at least one game (ie not counting Toronto's Week 1 bye), are just 3-2 SU on the season. Two of those three wins have been by a TD or less, and the two losses have been by at least 13 points. Yes, league wide results like that don't necessary apply to any/all specific teams in this league, but it's enough to cause pause on the Riders, especially with the best of the number long gone. Heck off a bye or not, it's really hard to pull the trigger on a line that's already moved a full three points from open and expect to win long term.

Which means the side is getting passed on again this week, and it's on to the total we go. Obviously the early move there has been to the 'under', and with both teams coming off outings where they scored just 10 points or less, you can understand that sentiment.

However, going back to those league-wide post-bye week trends this year (again not including Toronto's Week 1 bye), teams off a bye week (Saskatchewan) have averaged scoring 24.2 points the next time out on the field, while giving up 25.8 points/game on defense in those spots. That's 50 total points right on the nose which is where this number currently sits, meaning it's time to go into more specific details regarding these two teams.

(For those that are wondering, if you include Toronto's 64-14 loss in Week 2 after their bye, those numbers change to 22.5 points scored post-bye, and 32.16 points allowed post-bye).

Regarding specifics, this BC team knows they are built to have success with their offense doing the bulk of the heavy lifting, and putting up six points like they did a week ago simply won't cut it. The Lions didn't make Reilly the highest paid player in the league to try and grind out 18-17 wins like they had in Toronto, and with a defense that gives up 30+ per game and is still working out the kinks in terms of getting acquainted with Claybrooks philosophy, it's going to take some time before the Lions can trust that they'll win games without putting up 30+ points themselves.

Well I'm not prepared to back the Lions ATS-wise, I do believe the offense will be able to bonce back nicely this week, as the Riders defense is still working out its own kinks under a new coaching regime. Reilly hasn't been great, but the Lions O-line shares plenty of responsibility in BC's early struggles, and against that defensive pressure the Riders can bring, this week of prep should be a good one for that unit.

At the same time, the Riders offense shouldn't have many issues moving the ball up and down the field against this Lions defense who like I said earlier – is probably not going to come close to hitting their stride until their Week 8 bye. Two weeks to prepare to go up against this suspect Lions defense is going to help Saskatchewan score at least those 24.2 points post-bye week teams have put up this year, and I would not be surprised if they are the the final West Division team to put up 30+ against BC this year. The Eskimos (twice), Stamps, and Blue Bombers have already accomplished that feat, and this week it will be Saskatchewan's turn.

With the massive line move in favor of the Riders we've already seen, you've got to like their chances of being able to put up points, and with BC still relying on Reilly to carry the load, and in desperate need of a bounce back offensive performance themselves, this game should get well into the 50's or even 60's when all is said and done.

CFL Best Bet: Over 50.5 points

-- Home teams are 12-11 ATS overall
-- The 'Under' is 12-10 overall

          Analysis

          BC Lions (1-5)
saw their woes continue, falling 38-25 on the road against Saskatchewan (2-3). The Lions are also a dismal 1-5 ATS, covering only in Calgary back in Week 3 as 10 1/2-point underdogs. As single-digit 'dogs, the Lions are 0-3 ATS and they also failed to cover their only pick 'em and only game as a favorite.

For the Roughriders, they picked up their eighth cover in the past 10 meetings with the Lions. The Lions are also 1-5 ATS across the past six road games, and they fell to 2-10 ATS in the past 12 against losing teams.

Calgary (3-2) failed to cover for the fourth time in five outings this season, but they were able to avoid the upset bug against lowly Toronto (0-5). The Argos picked up their second cover of the season, although they scored 17 or fewer points for the fourth time in five contests. The 'under' has connected in three of the past four for Toronto. The under is also a perfect 3-0 in the past three for the Stamps after the over hit in the first two outings.

Montreal (3-2) continues to trend in the right direction. After opening the season 0-2 SU/1-1 ATS, they have won and covered three in a row. Defense has been a major part of their turnaround, as they allowed 73 total points in the two losses, and an average of 19.3 PPG in their past three wins.

The win for the Alouettes came at the expense of Edmonton (3-2), who have now dropped two of the past three after opening 2-0 SU. The Esks are now 3-9 ATS in the past 12 during Week 6, for whatever reason. Montreal is also a perfect 8-0 ATS across their past eight games played on a Saturday, while going 8-1 ATS in the past nine against winning teams. The Esks also saw their five-game cover streak in Montreal snapped.

Winnipeg (5-0) had their most dominant showing to date, emasculating Ottawa (2-3) by a 31-1 score. The RedBlacks opened 2-0 SU/1-1 ATS, but they have now dropped three straight while failing to cover four in a row, including 0-2 SU/ATS against the Bombers. Ottawa has been outscored 60-15 in the two meetings so far.

Hamilton (4-1) returns in Week 7 after their bye, looking to improve upon their 4-1 ATS mark.

          Team Betting Notes

-- The Stampeders travel to Canada's capital city looking to keep the RedBlacks down. Calgary loves Week 7, as they're 8-0 ATS in their past seven during the week. The RedBlacks are 0-4 ATS in the past four games, and 1-5 ATS in the past six in the month of July. The under is 5-0 in Calgary's past five, and 5-1 in the past six in the month of July for the Stamps. The under is 10-2 in Ottawa's past 12 July outings. However, the over is 3-1-1 in the past five meetings in Ottawa, and 7-3-1 in the past 11 in this series overall.

-- The Argos search for their first win on the road against the Esks on Friday night. Toronto is just 7-20 ATS in the past 27 games on the road, and 2-7 ATS in the past nine overall. They have also failed to cover the past four overall. The over is 5-1 in Toronto's past six against winning teams, while the over is 5-2 in Edmonton's past seven at home. The Argos have covered four in a row in this series, while the over is 10-3 in the past 13 meetings overall, and 5-1 in the past six in Edmonton.

-- The Blue Bombers have covered 22 of the past 30 games on the road, and they're also 22-8 ATS in the past 30 against winning teams. The Tiger-Cats have managed to cover four of the past five overall, and they're 4-0 ATS in the past four at Tim Horton's Stadium in 'The Hammer'. However, the Tabbies are 1-7-1 ATS in the past nine games in the month of July. In this series, the under is 16-5 in the past 21 meetings, and 20-6 in the past 26 in Hamilton. The under is 6-0 in Winnipeg's past six against winning teams and 45-19 in the past 64 at home for the Ti-Cats.

-- The Roughriders and Lions play the back end of a home-and-home series, this time in Vancouver. The Riders are 2-6 ATS in the past eight in Week 7. They're 8-3 ATS in the past 11 inside the Western Conference, however. For the Lions, they're 2-10 ATS in the past 12 against losing teams, 1-8 ATS in the past nine overall and 1-4 ATS in the past five at home. Saskatchewan is also 4-0 ATS in the past four meetings, but 1-3-1 ATS in the past five trips to BC. The under is 19-7 in the past 26 in Vancouver, and 41-19-1 in the past 61 in this series.

            Week 6 Betting Recap

The home teams swept Week 6 in the CFL straight-up while going 3-1 against the spread. The run started Thursday night with Calgary’s 26-16 victory at home against Toronto, but the Stampeders could not cover as heavy 13 ½-point favorites. On Friday night, Winnipeg stayed perfect of the year both SU and ATS with a 31-1 rout over Ottawa as 11 ½-point home favorites.

Saturday’s action started with Montreal pulling off its third-straight upset with a 20-10 victory against Edmonton closing as six-point underdogs at home. Later that night, Saskatchewan raced past British Columbia 38-25 as a six-point favorite in the first meeting in that home-and-home series.

            Thursday, July 25

Calgary Stampeders (3-2 SU, 1-4 ATS) at Ottawa RedBlacks (2-3 SU, 1-4 ATS)
            Point-spread: Calgary -5
            Total: 51 ½

            Game Overview

Calgary remains two games back in the West Division standings as the defending champ. The total stayed UNDER 52 points in last week’s win against Toronto and it has remained UNDER in the Stampeders’ last three games.

Nick Arbuckle continues to get the start at quarterback and he has thrown for 914 yards and five touchdowns in four games. He had two touchdown passes against Toronto, but he was also picked off twice. Juwan Brescacin caught five passes for 64 yards and both of those touchdowns.

Ottawa’ losing streak reached three games with Friday’s setback. It has failed to cover the closing spread in its last four games. The RedBlacks went with Jonathon Jennings at quarterback for the injured Dominique Davis and he struggled with just 45 yards passing while going 6-for-15.

Will Arndt could not do much better with four completions on 13 attempts for 57 yards. The lone bright spot in one of Ottawa’s most dismal showings in franchise history was John Crockett’s 88 yards rushing on 15 carries.

            Betting Trends

-- Calgary has a 4-1-1 SU record against Ottawa through the last six meetings. The total has gone OVER in eight of the last 11 meetings overall and in four of the last five matchups played at TD Place Stadium.

Toronto Argonauts (0-5 SU, 2-3 ATS) at Edmonton Eskimos (3-2 SU, 2-3 ATS)
            Point-spread: Edmonton -10 ½
            Total: 53

            Game Overview

The Argonauts have lost 14 of their last 15 games SU dating back to late August of last season. They have failed to cover in 11 of those games and the total has stayed UNDER in three of five games this year.

Mcleod Bethel-Thompson continues to get the start at quarterback and he continues to put up some big numbers despite the 0-5 start. He completed 32-of-42 passes against Calgary for 343 yards and two touchdowns, but he also threw four interceptions. He has thrown for 1,159 yards and seven scores in five games, but he leads the CFL with eight INT’s.

Edmonton has fallen two games in back of Winnipeg in the West with Saturday’s loss. The total stayed UNDER 54 in that game and it has stayed UNDER in the its last three games. The Eskimos have won their only two games at home this season SU with a 1-1 mark ATS.

Trevor Harris completed 29-of-43 passing attempts against Montreal for 271 yards, but he could not get the offense into the end zone through the air. He also ran for 16 of Edmonton’s 49 total rushing yards.

            Betting Trends

-- Edmonton has won five of the last seven meetings SU in this inter-division matchup, but Toronto holds a 4-1 edge in the last five games ATS. The total has gone OVER in five of the last six meetings in Edmonton.

            Friday, July 26

Winnipeg Blue Bombers (5-0 SU, 5-0 ATS) at Hamilton Tiger-Cats (4-1 SU, 4-1 ATS)
            Point-spread: Pick 'em
            Total: 55

            Game Overview

The Blue Bombers continue to play extremely well on both sides of the ball. The offense is averaging 33.8 points per game complementing a defense that has only allowed a total of 80 points in its first five games. The total stayed UNDER 52 points against Ottawa and it has stayed UNDER in three of their last four contests.

Matt Nichols completed an impressive 86.2 percent of his 29 passing attempts on Friday night for 295 yards and two touchdowns. This included a franchise-high 19 completions in a row.

Hamilton is the class of the East Division behind the highest scoring offense in the CFL (37.4 PPG). Its defense has also played extremely well by holding opposing teams to an average of 20 points a game. Jeramiah Masoli has thrown for 1,517 yards and nine touchdowns in his first five games.

His top target Brandon Banks leads the CFL in receiving yards with 506 on 36 receptions. He has caught three balls for touchdowns. The Tiger-Cats are 3-0 SU and ATS at home this year with the total staying UNDER in all three games.

            Betting Trends

-- The Blue Bombers have the SU 4-2 edge in the last six meetings and the total has stayed UNDER in the last five matchups. It has also stayed UNDER in 11 of the last 12 meetings in Hamilton.

            Saturday, July 27

PAREDES’ FIVE FIELD GOAL NIGHT LIFTS STAMPS TO WIN OVER REDBLACKS
                      CFL.CA STAFF

OTTAWA — Rene Paredes hit the game-winning field goal to give the Calgary Stampeders a 17-16 victory over the Ottawa REDBLACKS on Thursday night.

The REDBLACKS held the lead late in the fourth quarter, but after deciding to concede a safety with under two minutes to go, the Stampeders marched down the field to win the game.

Nick Arbuckle went 30 of 37 through the air for 370 yards.

Markeith Ambles had five catches for 79 yards, while Reggie Begelton and Eric Rogers had 78 and 71 yards, respectively.

Ka’Deem Carey had 70 yards on the ground, but he was forced out of the game with an injury. Terry Williams came in and had 47 rushing yards.

The Calgary defence forced a pair of fumbles and hauled in two interceptions. Chris Casher led the way on that side of the ball, finishing with four tackles, a sack, and a forced fumble.

Jonathon Jennings went 15-for-18 for 125 yards and a touchdown in the loss.

The first half would prove to be a defensive battle between the two teams. Turnovers would plague each offence, with the REDBLACKS committing three to the Stampeders’ two.

Jennings’ woes under centre continued to start the game, as he started 5 of 8 for 22 yards and two interceptions. The first came when Robertson Daniel undercut a slant route and made a diving effort for the pick. Jennings would be intercepted again in the second quarter, this time by DeShaun Amos, who went up and nabbed a jump ball on a deep shot to the end zone. Running back John Crockett also fumbled the ball on the second possession of the game.

Kickers Rene Paredes and Lewis Ward had all of the respective team’s points through two quarters. The pair had three field goals apiece, with Ward hitting a 53-yard kick for his final score of the half. With his first field goal of the game, Ward set a new CFL record for consecutive kicks made with 62.

Paredes would open the third quarter with his fourth field goal of the game to make it 12-9. Eric Rogers helped move his kicker into position with a pair of catches that totalled 23 yards.

The first major of the game would come in the fourth quarter. Jennings would lead the team down the field, going five-for-five on the drive for 58 yards. He’d cap off the drive by finding Brad Sinopoli over the middle, and the receiver would do the rest, bouncing off a tackler to find pay dirt. Ward would add the point after to make it a 16-12 game.

Arbuckle had to lead his team down the field for the game-tying score with under three minutes to go, and after being forced into a second-and-10 situation, he hit Ambles with a 28-yard strike down the right sideline. He’d find Richie Sindani for a 24-yard catch-and-run, but as he stretched out for the goal line, Corey Tindal forced a fumble that would be recovered by Sherrod Baltimore. That looked to be a game-deciding play, but the REDBLACKS would give the Stamps another chance.

Ottawa would be backed up to their goal line, but instead of punting the ball and giving the Stampeders decent field position, they’d take the safety, giving Calgary the opportunity to win the game with a field goal.

Williams gave the Stamps solid starting field position with a 28-yard return. Arbuckle would work down the field and run the clock down, setting the stage for Paredes to walk it off. He’d do just that, hitting a 31-yarder to seal the 17-16 final.

With the win, the Stampeders will travel back home for a showdown with the Edmonton Eskimos on Aug 3. Ottawa will be heading into their matchup with the Montreal Alouettes on Aug 2 looking to avoid its fifth straight loss.

ESKIMOS ICE ARGOS IN SHUTOUT AT COMMONWEALTH
                        CFL.CA STAFF

The offensive woes continue to plague the Toronto Argonauts as they remain without a win through six games after being iced by the Edmonton Eskimos 26-0 Thursday night at The Brick Field at Commonwealth Stadium.

With the win, the Esks move to 4-2 on the season, tied with their cross-province rival Stamps for second in the West Division. Meanwhile, the Argos sit at the bottom of the East Division standings after being handed their first shutout since 2009.

Having gone two games this season already without passing for a touchdown and losing both of those games, Trevor Harris managed to do enough for the Eskimos with his 298 yards passing through the air off of 27 of 39 without needing to pass for a major in a winning effort.

Despite an opening drive that had the Eskimos progress deep into the Argos’ end of the field, Trevor Harris couldn’t cap off the drive — having a pass attempt escape him over the middle of the field and into the hands of Toronto’s Justin Herdman.

Head coach Jason Maas challenged the play, having it overturned and giving Edmonton the ball on the 2-yard line. However, a Cooper fumble would make it all for not on the ensuing play, coughing the ball up back into the hands of the Argonauts.

A tenacious Edmonton defence took the heat off of their own offence, getting the ball back when Monshadrik Hunter undercut an underthrown ball by McLeod Bethel-Thompson. The interception marked Bethel-Thompson’s ninth interception on the year.

A week after coughing up seven turnovers against the Stampeders, the Double Blue handed over the ball on five occasions Thursday night.

The Eskimos were sure to make this time around count. Following a touchdown that was called back and a pass interference call against Toronto, Trevor Harris was able to plunge his way in from 1-yard out to break the ice and put the Esks ahead.

In the second quarter, the Eskimos’ defence continued their pressure on the Argos’ quarterback while the offence of the Green and Gold were able to put themselves in position to allow Sean Whyte to chip in a pair of field goals, one from 21 and 47 yards, giving Edmonton a 13-0 lead.

A designed swing play resulted in a fumble by the Eskimos after an incompletion counted as a lateral. The Argos defence was able to scoop up the loose ball, giving their offence some signs of life in the final moments of the half.

Despite some forward progress moving into scoring range, Bethel-Thompson was unable to find room to breathe, turning the ball over back to Edmonton after a fumble off of contact.

The teams made their way to the locker rooms with Edmonton maintaining a 13-0 lead, holding the Double Blue to just 119 yards on offence.

Toronto hoped to spark some new energy into their offence, electing to start Dakota Prukop in the second half after Bethel-Thompson completed just five of 13 pass attempts for 83 yards in the first half. At the end of the day, he’d complete just six of 18 for 90 yards.

Even with a new quarterback behind centre, the Eskimos defence wasn’t phased one bit, forcing a quick third down to get their offence the ball.

Replacing an injured CJ Gable as the Esks’ starter out of the backfield, Shaq Cooper crossed the goal line in the third quarter for his first CFL touchdown off of a 4-yard dash. Cooper kept himself involved in the Eskimos’ offence for the night, racking up 128 yards on the ground and 48 yards through the air.

The ensuing drive by the Argos, the struggles continued as Prukop threw his first career interception into the hands of Jordan Hoover, marking his first pick of his career.

At the start of the fourth quarter, the Argonauts reverted back to their original signal-caller, putting Bethel-Thompson the nod once again to manage the huddle. Changes at quarterback wouldn’t solve the team’s offensive woes though as they would go to commit a third-down turnover on their quarter-opening drive.

Whyte would add one more boot to his stat line before the day was out, splitting the uprights from 37 yards out, his third field goal of the game.

Prukop replaced Bethel-Thompson on the following offensive drive by the Argos, being the third time Toronto changed their signal-caller during the game.

Prukop would throw eight of 13 for 68 yards and two interceptions in his time spent behind centre.

Whyte put the game on ice with his fourth field goal of the game, capping the 26-0 victory.

Up next for the winless Toronto Argonauts will be a trip to Winnipeg next Thursday to see if they can right their ship against the Blue Bombers. As for the Eskimos, they’ll be up in the season’s first instalment of the Battle of Alberta when they square off against the Calgary Stampeders next Saturday.

Friday’s List of 13: Random stuff with weekend here…….

                            13) Twins 10, White Sox 3— In his first 12 AB’s vs Chicago this season, Nelson Cruz was 8-12 with six home runs. Minnesota is on a MLB record-setting home run pace this year.

There have been seven 3-HR games at Guaranteed Rate Field, only one by a Chicago player.

                            12) Funny moment on the White Sox telecast last night, when they showed the only home run Giants’ broadcaster Duane Kuiper hit in his 12-year major league career.

Kuiper was a pretty good player, mostly for Cleveland; he hit .271 in his career, but his OPS was only .641, so not lot of pop there. The reason the White Sox showed his homer last night is because he hit it off of White Sox broadcaster Steve Stone, who went 15-12 that year, but lost 9-2 to the Indians that night.

Stone was a good sport (he is a great analyst) and it made for a couple laughs.

                            11) After averaging 16,843 fans for their first 16 home games, Minnesota Twins have averaged 31,516 fans over their past 36 games at Target Field. They’ve had eight sellouts this season. Winning generates interest.

                            10) Under went 22-8-1 in baseball Tuesday/Wednesday; handicapping baseball is a daily grind and a tough one. The balls are juiced, but you still have to make contact for them to leave the yard.

                            9) Angels swept Freeway Series from Dodgers 4-0 this year, first time they’ve ever done that.

                            8) Tampa Bay Rays’ ace Blake Snell is done for several weeks; he’s going to have his elbow scoped- they hope to have him back in September.

                            7) Baseball stuff:
                            — Tyler White was traded from Houston to the Dodgers for minor league P Andre Scrubb.
                            — Tampa Bay put P Blake Snell (elbow) on the IL.
                            — Texas put OF Joey Gallo (broken hand) on the IL.
                            — New York put OF Brett Gardner (knee) on the IL.

                            6) If you care about such things, Falcons are -2 over Denver with a total of 34 in the Hall of Fame game in Canton next week. First NFL game of the preseason.

                            5) Pittsburgh Steelers open on road (at Foxboro) for 5th straight year; since ’97, Pitt is 1-8-1 vs spread when an underdog in their road opener; five of their last six RO’s stayed under total.

                            4) Oft-injured Troy Tulowitzki retired Thursday after a 13-year playing career; he hit .290 with an .856 career OPS, made five All-Star teams, was a big part of the 2007 NL champ Rockies.

                            3) Happy birthday (Thursday) to one of my boyhood heroes, Biff Pocoroba, who turned 66 years old this week. A switch-hitting catcher, Pccoroba hit .257 in a 10-year career, making the 1978 All-Star Game (he caught the 9th inning).

Also, Caddyshack hit theaters this week in 1980. Very funny movie.

                            2) 947 people have already signed up for the $1,500/entry Westgate SuperContest in Las Vegas, where you pick five NFL games a week against the spread.

                            1) Wow, the Federal Trade Commission fined Facebook $5B for losing control over tons of personal data and mishandling its communications with users. Apparently, $5B is only one month’s worth of revenue for Facebook, which is kind of staggering.

BOMBERS, TICATS MEET IN CLASH OF DIVISION LEADERS
                                CFL.CA STAFF

HAMILTON – The Winnipeg Blue Bombers look to cement themselves as the best team in the CFL on Friday Night Football when they take on the Hamilton Tiger-Cats at Tim Hortons Field.

The teams enter Friday at the top of their respective divisions with a combined record of 9-1. A matchup in which both teams have played at least five games and have one loss combined is extremely rare, a scenario that’s unfolded only five times since 1958.

There is nothing to separate the Tabbies and the Bombers statistically. Hamilton has the most points-per-game, while Winnipeg has the second-most. The Blue Bombers have the fewest points allowed per game and the Tiger-Cats have the second fewest.

The Blue and Gold defence could get even better with Adam Bighill returning to the lineup. The reigning CFL Most Outstanding Defensive Player hasn’t seen any action since Week 3, but his addition makes the Bomber defence even more of a threat.

“It’s going to be a great battle. They’re a fantastic team,” Bighill told BlueBombers.com. “They pose a handful of unique challenges on offence with all the explosive plays they’ve had and [Brandon] Banks leading the charge. You’ve got [Jeremiah] Masoli who can throw the ball all over the field and extend plays.”

Bighill re-entering the lineup will only improve an already stingy Winnipeg run defence. The Bombers have given up a mere 59.2 rushing yards per game, unsurprisingly the lowest in the league.

Hamilton is still without starting running back Sean Thomas Erlington, so if they are unable to establish the ground game early, it could be a long night for the Ticats. The three backs listed on the Hamilton depth chart – Maleek Irons, Anthony Coombs and Jackson Bennett – have 35 carries between them this year.

Should the Tabbies struggle on the ground, expect a big game from Masoli. The seasoned quarterback already has two games of 400 passing yards or more and has thrown more than 30 passes in four of his five games this year.

“We’re going to do what we do – try to stay as balanced as possible,” Masoli told Ticats.ca when asked about facing the Bombers defence. “Just stringing success together, that’s the biggest thing we can do; keep their offence off the field, help our defence and try to play the field position battle.”

His counterpart at quarterback is winning ball games, despite not lighting up the stat sheet. Matt Nichols has only tossed one pick in 2019, despite averaging 9.1 yards per completion. Remarkably, Nichols has not thrown for over 300 yards yet, but his team is nevertheless 5-0.

“The thing I’ve liked most is the lack of satisfaction in the locker room,” Nichols said. “Even after our last win it didn’t totally feel like a winning locker room. It’s just one of those things where everyone feels like we can be better, feels like we can’t wait to get back to work for the next week.”

Hamilton will get a boost on the offensive line, as dependable tackle Chris Van Zeyl will see his first action since July 4. The Tabbies boast one of the finest pass protection units in the league, having allowed only seven sacks over their five games. But with Van Zeyl out of the lineup last game, the Calgary Stampeders got to Masoli four times.

The Bombers have nine sacks this season, with Jackson Jeffcoat having three to his name. Masoli has been leaned on by the Ticats, and the Bombers cannot afford to let him get comfortable in the pocket, especially if the Hamilton run game fails to get going.

Friday’s matchup will pit two long time teammates against one another as head coaches. Mike O’Shea and Orlondo Steinauer played on the same defence for nine years; in 2000 with the Tiger-Cats and from 2001-2008 as members of the Toronto Argonauts, winning the Grey Cup together in 2004.

The duo were both on the Argos coaching staff for a number of years after their retirement, before leaving for opportunities with other franchises.

“I think we’re both cut from the same cloth,” Steinauer told Ticats.ca. “I actually pictured us coaching together – which happened. Going against each other never really crossed my mind until he took the path to Winnipeg. I’m happy for him, but when the ball’s kicked off, what’s it going to be like? Just the next game.”

                                BY THE NUMBERS

100 – Hamilton offensive lineman Mike Filer is slated to play in his 100th career game on Friday.

4 – The Ticats are looking to make it four straight victories at Tim Hortons Field for the first time since they opened the stadium with an eight-game winning streak in 2014.
