Armadillo: Wrapping up a college sports Saturday

13) Ohio State 52, Maryland 51 OT— This was the strangest of games……..
— Maryland’s QB tore his knee up last week, is out for the year; they gained 535 yards in a game where their backup QB played the whole game.
— Terps had TD runs of 81-75 yards, just in the first quarter- they ran the ball for 339 freakin’ yards, which we’ll get back to later.
— Urban Meyer looks stressed out on sidelines, like he could keel over for good at any minute.
— Buckeyes have allowed 31+ points in three of their last four games.
— Maryland scores in OT to make score 52-51; did we mention they ran the ball for 339 yards? They go for 2 points and the win, but they throw a pass with their backup QB. No bueno.
— 47 of their first 61 plays were runs, but they threw a pass with the game on the line.

I was thoroughly entertained by this game, but the end just ticked me off. Do what you do best!!!! Run the damn ball. Maryland wins this game, and the interim coach might become the full-time coach. Now? Good luck interviewing for jobs this winter.

12) Oklahoma State 45, West Virginia 41— Not everyone who plays college football is going to the NFL; senior QB Tyler Cornelius threw a total of 24 passes in his first three years at OSU, but he is the starter this year and this was a big day for him on Senior Day, going 30-46 for 338 yards and three TD’s as they upset West Virginia.

Here are the distances between West Virginia and their Big X rivals:

— Oklahoma State 1,086, Oklahoma 1,137, TCU 1,238

Why the bleep is West Virginia in this league and not the Big 14 or the ACC?

11) UCLA 34, USC 27— Joshua Kelley ran ball 40 times for 289 yards, the most yards for any UCLA RB since 2004; Bruins are 3-8, USC is 5-6. Last time both of these schools finished with losing records was 1958, before I was born. Trojans have to upset Notre Dame next week to get to 6-6 and be bowl eligible— ain’t gonna happen.

Where does USC look for a new coach? Would they dare consider Lane Kiffin again? How about John Harbaugh or Mike Leach?

USC has had three former football players (Garrett, Haden, Swann) as AD’s; how about hiring an experienced administrator and running things the right way?

10) Nebraska 9, Michigan State 6
— Neither team scored a TD, or completed half their passes.
— Total yardage was 289-248 MSU
— Spartans converted 9-20 on 3rd down, but only scored three points?
— Nebraska won four of its last five games after an 0-6 start.
— This is first time Nebraska had won a game without scoring a TD since a 3-0 victory over Kansas State in 1937.

9) Utah 30, Colorado 7— When I was in Las Vegas last month, my only college football bet was Colorado over Arizona State; the Buffs won/covered, but they haven’t won since, turning a 5-0 start into a 5-6 debacle. Colorado blew a 31-3 lead in an awful home loss to Oregon State late last month, and they haven’t recovered from that.

In their last five games, Buffaloes were outscored 101-20 in the 2nd half.

8) Wisconsin 47, Purdue 44 OT— Boilermakers led 27:13 with 7:00 left in game, but they let game slip away and lost to the Badgers for 7th time in a row. Wisconsin had 13 penalties for 171 yards, but ran the ball for 385 yards.

Purdue is 5-6, with four losses by 4 or fewer points; they need a win at Indiana next week to go to a bowl game.

6) Utah State 29, Colorado State 24— Aggies were a 27-point road favorite, but host Rams scored with 1:36 left to take a 24-23 lead. Utah State then drove 71 yards on six plays for the GW TD, scoring on a 33-yard pass with 0:43 left to play.

Colorado State appeared to score a TD on a Hail Mary on the last play of the game, but the kid who caught the ball had stepped out of bounds running down the field, so he was ineligible to touch the ball first, so that nullified the TD, luckily for 10-1 Utah State.

5) Temple 27, South Florida 17— USF led this game 17-0 at halftime; Owls’ last two scores came on a punt return with 10:35 left and then a defensive score with 1:37 left.

4) Florida State 22, Boston College 21— Seminoles hit on a 74-yard pass with 1:49 left to snap a 3-game skid and stay bowl eligible; they play the Florida Gators next week. FSU needs to win that game to get to 6-6.

In itself, going to a bowl isn’t that big a deal, especially a minor bowl, but the practices teams have before those bowls are important— it helps coaches develop their younger players who might be starters next year. Also, it appeases the boosters, at least a little bit.

The 3-4 hours the bowl is on TV also helps for recruiting; it is free advertising for the program.

3) Furman 76, Villanova 68 OT— Paladins were a 16-point underdog; looks like the defending national champs might be in for a tough year. Wildcats took 44 3-pointers, only 27 2-point shots against a Southern League team, which doesn’t bode well for Big East play.

Villanova is the first defending national champ since 1996 to start the next season 2-2 or worse.

It is November 18 and Furman has already beaten two of last year’s Final Four teams; they won at the buzzer at Loyola, Chi earlier this month.

2) Clemson 35, Duke 6— These teams are in same league, but since 2009, Clemson has had 52 players drafted by NFL teams; Duke has had four. David Cutcliffe is doing an excellent job of keeping the Blue Devils going to bowl games with lesser talent.

1) Vanderbilt 36, Ole Miss 29 OT— This was a fun game to watch; a sketchy replay reversal nullified the Rebels’ tying TD in OT. Vandy plays Tennessee next week; the winner will be bowl eligible.

Top 25 Notes

-- Ohio State was in serious trouble and they couldn't stop the rushing attack of Maryland. It appeared Saturday was going to start off with a giant upset, but the Buckeyes held on by a thread to edge the Terrapins 52-51 in overtime to survive and advance. Perhaps they were looking forward to their huge rivalry game against Michigan next Saturday. The Wolverines might have been looking past Indiana, too, as they won 31-20 despite entering the day as a four-touchdown favorite.

-- Alabama stepped out of the SEC and faced a cupcake, like has become customary in that league in the penultimate weekend of the regular season before rivalry week. FCS The Citadel played the No. 1 team in the land tougher than LSU held Mississippi State in the previous two weeks, as the Crimson Tide blanked those two SEC foes. The Bulldogs entered 4-5 SU, but they ended up tied at halftime by a 10-10 score before the Crimson Tide pulled away in the third quarter. The Citadel received a big pay day, but they were the ones making the Tide work hard.

-- Utah State held on by the skin of their teeth, 29-24, against Colorado State. The Rams appeared to have a Hail Mary touchdown, but...see bad beats below.

-- Notre Dame kept their foot on the gas and never let Syracuse even think they had a chance at the upset, as the Irish are hurtling toward their first appearance in the four-team national playoff. The Fighting Irish easily hit on the 10-point number, covering by the end of the first quarter and never looking back. The Irish improved to 3-0-1 ATS over the past four, and 6-1-1 ATS across the past eight.

Big Five Conference Report (ACC, Big 10, Big 12, Pac-12, SEC)

-- Florida State kept their bowl eligibility alive with a 22-21 nailbiter win over Boston College. It was a surprising result for the Seminoles, who were short 'dogs at home. QB Anthony Brown and RB A.J. Dillon were question marks for the Eagles, but they were able to play so B.C. had their best players on the field. ... N.C. State added to the woes of Louisville, roughing up the Cardinals 52-10. Louisville canned Bobby Petrino this past week, but the team didn't seem to respond with any energy. ... Miami-Florida picked up a 38-14 win on the road against Virginia Tech on the road. The total was also a bad beat (see below).

-- Iowa took care of business on the road against Illinois by a 63-0 victory. They really pulled away in the second quarter with 28 points to take a 35-0 lead into the half, but they kept their foot on the gas and helped total bettors to an 'over' (60) all by themselves. ... Wisconsin-Purdue was a crazy game, totaling 91 points in a 3OT battle. The Boilermakers (-3.5) were covering for a good chunk of the game, but the Badgers tied it up with 2:51 to go to force OT. Purdue took a 34-27 lead in the first OT, Wisconsin tied. Purdue took a 41-34 lead in 2OT, Wisconsin tied. Purdue then elected to kick the field goal in 3OT, taking a 44-41 lead, but they allowed the 17-yard TD run to Jonathan Taylor to lose a heartbreaker.

-- West Virginia-Oklahoma State (74) turned into a barn burner. There were a total of 55 points on the board heading into the fourth quarter, so it wasn't necessarily a slam dunk 'over'. However, the teams combined for 31 points in the final quarter to end up with 86 points on the board. ... Texas Tech limped into Manhattan with a backup QB and they never got on track, losing 21-6 to Kansas State. The Wildcats entered as a 6 1/2-point underdog, but they picked up the cover, moving to 5-2 ATS over the past seven. The 'under' is also a perfect 3-0 in the past three for the Wildcats, and 8-3 in 11 games overall.

-- USC hit rock-bottom in their loss to rival UCLA, falling 34-27. Now, if the Trojans want to avoid being home for the holidays they need to spring a monumental upset over Notre Dame if they want to go bowling. ... Colorado started 5-0 SU, but now they're 5-6 following a 30-7 loss against Utah. The Utes are on their way to the Pac-12 Championship Game for the first time in school history. ... Washington State laid the wood to Arizona, as QB Gardner Minshew tossed seven TDs. He had 311 yards and five TDs - at half - as the Cougars made a statement with a 55-14 lead at the break. 'Over' (63.5) bettors loved it, as they might have been the easiest betting win ever. The Cougs are now 9-2 ATS on the season.

-- Florida buried FCS Idaho by a 63-10 score, covering the 'over' (59) all by themselves. ... Mississippi State also covered the 'over' (48.5) on their own, shelleacking Arkansas by a 52-6 score.

Bad Beats

-- Florida Atlantic appears on bad beats pretty frequently. They were playing from behind for a good chunk of Thursday's game at North Texas, catching four points from the Mean Green. The Owls took the lead in the third quarter, 24-20, but slipped behind 34-24 just six minutes lately. With 4:06 to go, the Mean Green appeared to have secured the cover, going up 41-31. However, the Owls hit a 55-yard TD pass with 3:38 to go in regulation, closing the game to 41-38 for the backdoor cover.

-- The Mountain West featured some strange endings. Colorado State appeared to have hit a Hail Mary with no time left to stun Utah State outright as 29 1/2-point underdogs. It's doubtful very many people took the Rams on the moneyline, but...they appeared to have a game-winning TD with no time on the clock. However, the receiver who caught the ball in the end zone was flagged for illegal touching, stepping out of bounds before coming back into the field of play. Ouch.

-- Also in the MWC, Wyoming (-2 1/2) trailed Air Force 27-14 with 8:44 to go in the fourth quarter. However, Wyoming scored a rushing TD to slice the lead to 27-21, and then they had a TD pass with 1:09 to go, making it 28-27. It appeared as if it would end right there in the snow and ice, with a Cowboys win, Falcons cover. However, after the onside kick, the Cowboys ripped off a 27-yard run for the 35-27 lead.

-- If you had Maryland on the moneyline. Ouch.

-- If you had the 'under' in Colgate-Army (37), it was a rough finish. If you have Colgate +11, it was a rough finish. The Black Knights punched in a touchdown with 2:06 to go, flipping the cover to Army and the total to 'over' in the process.

4th Quarter Covers - Week 12

Glancing at the scoreboard won’t tell you the whole story in most games. Here are some of the games that went down to the wire relative to the spread in the fourth quarter last week in the 12th college football weekend.

Each week there are several teams that cover despite not necessarily deserving it, as well as other teams that played much better than the final score shows.

North Texas (-4½) 41, Florida Atlantic 38: In a rematch of last season’s Conference USA championship game, North Texas stormed out to a 17-0 lead as a slight favorite that climbed from -2½ to -4½. The Owls battled back to take a 21-20 lead in the second quarter and led 24-20 early in the third quarter with scoring drives of 29 and 22 yards following rare Mason Fine interceptions. North Texas posted back-to-back touchdowns to go up by 10 but Florida Atlantic climbed back within three by the start of the fourth quarter. The Owls would miss a potential tying field goal later in the fourth quarter and then with about four minutes remaining, DeAndre Torrey broke loose for a 92-yard touchdown run to put the Mean Green up by 10. The lead didn’t last as in three plays plus a personal foul Florida Atlantic went 73 yards to trail by only three. North Texas had to punt the ball back in the final minutes but sealed the game with an interception, though it wasn’t quite enough for most on the home favorite.

Memphis (-8) 28, SMU 18: With a total of 75 fireworks were expected Friday night in this AAC West showdown. Offense didn’t materialize until late however as Memphis led 7-5 at halftime and 14-12 through three quarters. Memphis pulled ahead 21-12 early in the fourth and then put the game away with another 4th quarter score to lead by 16. SMU went 75 yards in five plays to get back within 10 and had the ball back in the final minutes. SMU crossed midfield but a pair of penalties and a sack forced the Mustangs to go for it on 4th-and-38 on their final play.

Boise State (-22) 45, New Mexico 14: The Broncos scored on a fumble return and added a field goal before halftime to turn a 14-7 edge into a 24-7 advantage. Boise State was up 31-7 through three quarters to sit just past the road favorite spread but New Mexico got on the board with an 86-yard punt return touchdown. The third turnover of the day for New Mexico handed Boise State a short field and the Broncos slipped past the favorite spread with a 41-yard touchdown run and for good measure the Broncos added another touchdown with just over a minute remaining.

Wisconsin (+3½) 47, Purdue 44: Purdue led by 11 heading into the fourth quarter and pulled ahead by 14 with a field goal with 10 minutes remaining. The Badgers put together a touchdown drive to trail by seven with fewer than seven minutes remaining and the defense stepped up to force a 3-and-out. Jonathan Taylor picked up 35 yards on 1st down and Jack Coan delivered three completions as Wisconsin tied the game with fewer than three minutes remaining. Purdue got 35 yards on first down but stalled at the Wisconsin 40 and opted to punt and Wisconsin was able to avoid disaster pinned deep managing to get into overtime. Both teams scored touchdowns quickly in the first two sessions but Purdue was held to a field goal going first in round three. A pair of Taylor runs completed the comeback for the Badgers with a huge day for the nation’s leading rusher.

Georgia (-42) 66, Massachusetts 27: The Bulldogs had 42 points by halftime and led 59-13 late in the third quarter. Massachusetts hit a big play as time expired in the third to take a 39-point deficit in the final frame. Georgia added an early touchdown to get past the heavy favorite spread again but UMass answered and Georgia methodically burned nearly nine minutes of game clock to complete the win without giving the ball back though they also failed to add points, falling just short of the massive number.

Kentucky (-15) 34, Middle Tennessee State 23: The Wildcats were past the spread in the first quarter with a 17-0 edge and led 31-10 late in the third quarter before a Middle Tennessee State touchdown put the margin right on the number as the Blue Raiders missed the PAT. Middle Tennessee State would get within a single-score with an early touchdown in the fourth quarter to trim Kentucky’s lead to eight but the Wildcats added a field goal to lead by 11 with four minutes remaining, though it wasn’t enough to cover and the Blue Raiders were a much bigger threat to add late points, reaching the Kentucky 5-yard-line in the final minute.

Wyoming (-3) 35, Air Force 27: After a tight first half Air Force took control of this game with a 10-point lead through three quarters, and that lead was extended to 14 points after a short field goal with about nine minutes remaining in the fourth quarter. Wyoming would complete a long drive with 4:32 to play to close to within six and the defense forced a 3-and-out. With a big 4th down conversion in their own territory the Cowboys eventually connected for a 22-yard touchdown pass with just over a minute remaining, taking a one-point lead that wasn’t quite enough for the favorite spread of -2½, eventually even closing at -3 at some outlets. Air Force threw a 1st down interception and Wyoming would add a late touchdown run on the short field for the improbable favorite cover.

Appalachian State (-27) 45, Georgia State 17: The Panthers hit a 52-yard field goal late in the third quarter to trail by only 21 but the Mountaineers scored two touchdowns in the first three minutes of the fourth quarter to lead by 35. Appalachian State was still ahead of the number after a Georgia State touchdown with eight minutes to go and they didn’t give the ball back with a 13-play drive to run out the clock.

Oklahoma State (+6) 45, West Virginia 41: With a lot of attention on the home finale with Oklahoma, West Virginia was in control in Stillwater up 31-14 at halftime and still leading by 10 halfway through the fourth quarter. The Cowboys trimmed the margin to three just after the five-minute mark and the Mountaineers stalled near midfield with a false start penalty making it 4th-and-11 and necessitating a punt. With more than two minutes remaining the Cowboys went 75 yards in seven plays to take the lead with 42 seconds to go. Will Grier led the Mountaineers to the red zone and had one final shot with one second remaining from the 14-yard-line but the pass was broken up to shake up the Big XII standings.

Southern Miss (-2) 21, Louisiana Tech 20: The Bulldogs led 17-14 at the half before a scoreless third quarter. Louisiana Tech added a short field goal early in the fourth to lead by six, closing as a 2-point underdog but actually favored most of the week until flipping on Saturday. With Jack Abraham back at quarterback Southern Miss went 85 yards in 14 plays to take more than seven minutes off the clock, taking a one-point lead with six minutes to go. Louisiana Tech crossed midfield on its final possession but opted to punt on 4th-and-10 and didn’t get the ball back as Southern Miss burned the final four minutes for the one-point win, with mixed spread results depending on the timing.

Florida State (+3) 22, Boston College 21: Boston College led by one through three quarters and seemingly was in control after an 18-play drive put the Eagles up by eight early in the fourth quarter, closing as a 3-point favorite in Tallahassee, though early in the week the line flipped back-and-forth between -1 on either side. Florida State managed a field goal to close to within five with 12 minutes remaining and the defense forced consecutive Boston College punts. Getting the ball back with two and a half minutes to go the Seminoles picked up a first down then connected for a huge play, striking for a 74-yard touchdown. Up one, Florida State went for two and failed as the one-point edge would prove to be the final margin.

Nebraska (-2) 9, Michigan State 6: The Huskers flipped to the favorite role Friday night and failed to score until the fourth quarter. Michigan State had a 6-0 edge in windy conditions in Lincoln. One of several unsportsmanlike penalties in a testy game gave the Huskers good field position after the kickoff and with a 35-yard gain on 1st down, Nebraska was able to get on the board with a field goal. Michigan State fumbled a few plays later and suddenly Nebraska had tied the game 6-6 with eight minutes to go after being unable to find the end zone despite 1st-and-goal from the 2-yard-line. Kicking into the wind Michigan State had a marginal 3-and-out and punt as Nebraska had good field position again and despite gaining only 23 yards, the Huskers went in front with a 47-yard kick from Barret Pickering. The Spartans gained yardage on its final two possessions but had their final threat end on downs on the Nebraska 29-yard-line as the Huskers picked up a narrow comeback win.

UCLA (+3) 34, USC 27: USC led 27-21 through three quarters at the Rose Bowl after settling for a 22-yard field goal. After an exchange of punts, the Bruins were buried at their own 3-yard-line early in the fourth quarter but eventually took the lead thanks to a 55-yard run from Joshua Kelley. JT Daniels was picked off on the next snap for USC but the Trojans stayed in the game as UCLA had to settle for a 19-yard field goal for a four-point edge. The Bruins had a quick 3-and-out however and UCLA added another three points to lead by seven. USC was a threat to force overtime reaching the UCLA 29-yard-line in the final minute but the Bruins defense held on.

Clemson (-29½) 35, Duke 6: The Blue Devils provided an early scare with a 6-0 lead but Clemson scored just before halftime to make a 14-6 advantage. The Tigers would add two third quarter touchdowns and early in the fourth quarter Clemson went up 35-6 for a 29-point margin on a spread that opened at -27 and reached as high as -29½.

Oregon (-3½) 31, Arizona State 29: The Ducks led 28-13 at halftime and wound up with a substantial production edge late Saturday night. Arizona State chipped away with a third quarter field goal and then got a short field touchdown following a muffed punt, one of four Oregon turnovers on the day. That put the Sun Devils within five but Oregon was able to add a field goal to push the lead up to eight points. Arizona State converted a big late 4th down and wound up in the end zone with about four minutes to go. The Sun Devils had to go for two and the tie but couldn’t convert. Oregon threw an interception near midfield to give the Sun Devils another shot. Arizona State couldn’t take advantage as they fumbled on a third down sack and Oregon was able to run out the clock for the win but failed cover with the late melt.

Vanderbilt (-3) 36, Mississippi 29: The Commodores led by seven through three quarters but Mississippi rallied late and wound up tying the game with 40 seconds remaining in a game the Rebels had a substantial yardage edge in. Vanderbilt needed only three plays to score a touchdown in overtime but the Commodores gave Ole Miss a big gain on first down with a penalty. The Rebels couldn’t deliver however ending the game with three straight incomplete passes.

Hawai’i (-7) 35, UNLV 28: The Warriors fell behind 21-3 hosting UNLV but battled to within eight by the start of the fourth quarter. UNLV scored early in the fourth on a short field drive to lead by 15 but Hawai’i eventually responded with a 64-yard touchdown pass, plus the two-point conversion to trail by seven. Up seven halfway through the final quarter UNLV aggressively went for it on 4th-and-1 just across midfield and came up short, giving the Hawai’i the opportunity to tie the game with about four minutes to go. The Warriors forced a punt and hit another big play to suddenly go in front by seven on a spread that fluctuated between -6½ and -7.

Tuesday’s games
Northern Illinois won eight of its last nine games with Western Michigan; they lost 45-30 (+17) in last visit here, two years ago. Huskies had their six-game win streak snapped by Miami LW; NIU won its last four road games, none by more than 10 points- under Carey, they’re 15-6 as road favorites, 2-0 this year. WMU lost its last three games, allowing 51-59-42 points; they’re 2-7 in last nine games as a home underdog. Six of last seven NIU games stayed under total; four of last five Western games went over.

Miami beat Ball State last two years, 28-7/21-20; RedHawks need win here to be bowl eligible. Miami is 4-8 in its last 12 games as home favorites, 1-2 this year. Ball State snapped a 3-game skid with a 42-41 win on their Senior Day; they’ve given up average of 325.3 rushing yards/game the last three weeks. Utah State won its last ten games since a 38-31 loss at Michigan State in their opener; Aggies escaped Colorado State 29-24 LW, when Rams’ TD on a Hail Mary was nullified by a penalty. Under Wells, USU is 8-12 as road underdogs, 1-0 this year. Boise State won its last six games, holding last three foes under 20 points. Broncos are 6-17 in last 23 games as a home favorite, 2-2 this year. Boise won four of last five games with USU; Aggies lost 21-10/50-19 in last two games on the blue turf. Over is 7-2-1 in Utah State games; last three Boise games stayed under.

Underdogs are 8-3 vs spread in last 11 Tennessee-Vanderbilt games; Vandy won four of last six meetings, winning 42-24/45-34 last two years. Winner of this game becomes bowl eligible. Tennessee lost two of its three road games but covered all three; they were held under 300 TY in three of last five games. Vanderbilt scored 31+ points in its five wins; they’re 0-6 scoring less than 31. Under Mason, Commodores are 4-10 as home favorites, 0-2 this season. Three of last four games for both teams stayed under the total.

TCU lost four of its last six games; they scored total of 40 points in last three games. Over last 11 years, Horned Frogs are 3-5 as home underdogs, 1-1 this year. Oklahoma State lost four of last six games; they scored 31+ points in last four games. Seminoles are 4-2 SU at home- over last 11 years, FSU is 1-5 vs spread as home underdogs. Florida won seven of its last nine games; they’re 6-3 in last nine games as road favorites, 2-0 this year. FSU won its last five games with Florida, winning 31-13/24-19 in last two played here. Over is 6-2 in last eight FSU games, 4-1-1 in Gators’ last six games.

LSU was held to 19-0 points in their two losses; they allowed less than 20 points in their last five wins. Tigers won two of three true road games this year- under Orgeron, they’re 3-0 vs spread as road underdogs. Texas A&M won five of its last seven games, scoring 41-38 points in last couple games. Aggies ran ball for 518 yards last two weeks- they’re 4-1 vs spread as home favorites this year. LSU won its last six games with A&M, winning last three visits here, by 15-6-5 points. Three of last four LSU games, five of Aggies’ last seven games stayed under the total.

Indiana won four of last five games with Purdue, winning last three games played here, by 2-7-20 points. Hoosiers lost five of their last six games after a 4-1 start; they’re 3-3 SU at home, are 3-6 in last nine games as a home underdog, 1-2 this year. Purdue lost three of last four games, giving up 41-47 points the last two games; Boilermakers are 2-2 as road favorites this year, after being road favorite only one time in previous five seasons. Five of last six Indiana games went over; Winner of this matchup between 5-6 teams becomes bowl eligible.

Home side won last five Notre Dame-USC games; favorites covered last six. Irish lost last two visits to LA, 45-27/49-14. Notre Dame is 11-0, clinches spot in national playoff with win here; they covered six of last eight games, are 3-0 on road this season, with all three wins by 10+ points. Irish are 6-2 in last eight games as a road favorite. USC is 5-6, needs upset win here to go to a bowl; Trojans lost last two games by 1-7 points; they’re a home underdog for first time in five years. Over is 6-2 in last eight ND games.

Arizona State ran ball for 250+ yards in five of its six wins; they’re 1-5 running for less than 250. Arizona held its last four foes under 160 YR. Wildcats won two of last three games, need win to go to a bowl. Home side won last five Arizona-ASU games; Sun Devils lost their last two visits to Tucson, 51-35/42-35. Arizona State won three of its last four games; three of those four games were decided by 3 or fewer points. Sun Devils are 1-4 SU on road; they’re 1-3 in last four games as road favorites. Bettors might like Ohio State's odds in college football showdown vs. Michigan

Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh is 0-3 against Urban Meyer's Ohio State squad, but the Wolverines opened 3.5-point road favorites for Saturday's clash and have since moved to -4.

It’s Week 13 of the college football season, and since Thanksgiving is also this week, we are giving you a bonus game in the opening line report. Here’s a look at the opening numbers and early action on five matchups, with insights from Derek Wilkinson, supervisor at The SuperBook at Westgate in Las Vegas.

No. 4 Michigan Wolverines at No. 10 Ohio State Buckeyes (+3.5)

Michigan is squarely in the College Football Playoff at this point, but needs a win over its archrival to stay there. The Wolverines (10-1 SU, 6-5 ATS) didn’t look good much of the way against Indiana in Week 12, but emerged with a 31-20 victory as hefty 28-point home favorites.

Ohio State hasn’t looked very good for the past month, yet still has just one blemish on its record. The Buckeyes (10-1 SU, 4-7 ATS) trailed Maryland by 14 points on multiple occasions, but rallied to force overtime and pulled out a 52-51 victory as 13.5-point road faves in Week 12.

“We were briefly at Michigan -3.5, but then went to 4, only because the betting market settled there,” Wilkinson said. “I think Ohio State is going to tighten things up this week. The Buckeyes barely escaped Maryland last week, and I’m sure they got an earful from Urban Meyer because of it. I think the wiseguys are going to like getting more than a field goal on Ohio State. We’re expecting that line to drop to 3.5 or 3 by game day.”

No. 6 Oklahoma Sooners at No. 9 West Virginia Mountaineers (Pick)

Oklahoma can punch its ticket to the Big 12 title game and stay in the CFP picture with a win at Morgantown on Friday night. The Sooners (10-1 SU, 4-7 ATS) engaged in another high-scoring affair in Week 12, nabbing a 55-40 victory over Kansas as massive 35-point home favorites.

West Virginia can also get into the Big 12 final, but needs a win and some help after stubbing its toe in Week 12. The Mountaineers (8-2 SU, 6-3-1 ATS) went to Oklahoma State as 6-point favorites and led by 17 at halftime, but blew all that in a 45-41 loss.

“We got a sharp five-figure bet on this one early, and the line is already at Oklahoma -1.5,” Wilkinson said. “I think this game is going to be a shootout, but West Virginia can’t match up with Oklahoma’s offense. I don’t think this line will quite get to -3, but it’ll be closer to that by Saturday.”

No. 3 Notre Dame Fighting Irish at Southern California Trojans (+10.5)

Notre Dame is also right on track for a CFP berth as it prepares to renew one of the great rivalries in college football. The Fighting Irish (11-0 SU, 7-3-1 ATS) drop-kicked Syracuse 36-3 laying 10 points at Yankee Stadium last weekend.

Southern Cal is having a dismal year, needing a victory Saturday just to become bowl-eligible. The Trojans (5-6 SU, 3-8 ATS) lost to an even-more-dismal UCLA outfit in Week 12, 34-27 giving 2.5 points on the road.

“After seeing the way Notre Dame destroyed Syracuse last week, I think the Irish might be able to hang with Alabama,” Wilkinson said. “This game might get ugly for USC. We only put the line at -10.5 because of the rivalry between these two teams. In reality, Notre Dame is at least two touchdowns better. I think both the public and the wiseguys are going to be all over Notre Dame, and the bookmakers will be praying that USC shows up to play on Saturday.”

No. 18 Washington Huskies at No. 8 Washington State Cougars (-2.5)

Washington State rolls into Friday night’s Apple Cup with visions of the CFP dancing in its head, unrealistic as it may be that a Pac-12 team reaches the four-team showdown. The Cougars are 10-1 SU and tied for No. 1 in the nation with a 10-1 ATS mark, after boatracing Arizona 69-28 as 10-point home faves in Week 12.

On the flip side, Washington is 8-3 SU but is the third-worst team in the nation for bettors, with a 2-9 ATS mark. The Huskies beat Oregon 42-23 as 32.5-point home favorites in Week 12, failing to cash for the sixth straight game.

“We’re a little lower than most books, at -2.5,” Wilkinson said of The SuperBook’s opener. “I think the public is going to like Washington State, but I’m not sure what the sharps will do yet. My best guess is that we’ll be at -3 soon, just because of heavy betting from the public.”

Auburn Tigers at No. 1 Alabama Crimson Tide (-24.5)

Alabama is again a monster favorite, but it is the Iron Bowl, so it’s worth delving into as Nick Saban’s troops prepare for the SEC championship game. The Crimson Tide (11-0 SU, 7-4 ATS) basically had a bye in Week 12, hosting The Citadel, but surprisingly were in a 10-10 tie at halftime before plowing to a 50-17 victory as overwhelming 53.5-point faves.

Auburn would love nothing more than to put a blemish on its archrival’s record, just as it did in last year’s Iron Bowl. The Tigers (7-4 SU, 5-6 ATS) also had a cakewalk in Week 12, ripping Liberty 53-0 as 29.5-point home favorites.

“We adjusted to -24 to stay in line with the market, but I don’t think it’s going to matter,” Wilkinson said. “Even though we’d all love to see another classic Auburn vs ‘Bama game, everyone is going to bet on the favorite, and the Crimson Tide is probably going to cover. We haven’t seen any large bets on this yet, but the public money is definitely on Alabama so far.”

**Northern Illinois at Western Michigan**

-- As of late Monday night, most betting shops had No. Illinois (7-4 straight up, 6-5 against the spread) installed as a 5.5-point road favorite with a total of 50.5. The Broncos were +180 on the money line (risk $100 to win $180).

-- Western Michigan (6-5 SU, 3-8 ATS) is 2-3 SU and 1-4 ATS in five home games this season. The Broncos have been home underdogs twice, getting blasted in both instances vs. Syracuse (55-42) and vs. Ohio (59-14). Those are the only home ‘dog spots during Tim Lester’s two-year tenure.

-- Western Michigan lost star junior QB Jon Wassink to a season-ending foot injury early in the first quarter of a 51-24 home loss to Toledo on Oct. 25. Wassink had completed 61.5 percent of his passes for 2,009 yards with a 16/6 touchdown-to-interception ratio. He also had 162 rushing yards and six TDs. Wassink’s replacement has been true freshman Kaleb Eleby, who has connected on 69.7 percent of his throws for 632 yards with a 4/2 TD-INT ratio. He has one rushing score.

-- After losing vs. The ‘Cuse and at Michigan (49-3) to start the season, WMU ripped off six straight wins going into the home date vs. Toledo. But with Wassink going down early, the Broncos were routed by the Rockets and again the next week at home vs. Ohio. They lost a third consecutive outing last Tuesday at Ball State when the Cardinals won a 42-41 decision in overtime. WMU had a 548-353 advantage in total offense a 33-22 edge in first downs and was +1 in turnover margin. Eleby’s nine-yard TD pass to Giovanni Ricci with 1:48 remaining in the fourth quarter forced overtime. After Ball State scored on its first possession of the extra session, WMU answered with Eleby’s one-yard TD plunge. Lester opted to go for two, however, and the run attempt failed.

-- Eleby completed hit 20-of-29 passes for 187 yards and one TD without an interception. Junior RB LeVante Bellamy turned 35 carries into 213 yards and one TD, while senior RB Jamauri Bogan rushed 25 times for 105 yards and a pair of scores. Ricci had seven receptions for 65 yards and one TD.

-- Bellamy has rushed for 1,120 yards and six TDs with a 6.4 yards-per-carry average. He also has 23 catches for 127 yards and one TD. Bogan, who has 3,212 career rushing yards for 40 TDs, has rushed for 639 yards and 13 TDs while averaging 4.5 YPC this year.

-- True freshman WR Jayden Reed has emerged as a big-time playmaker, pacing the Broncos in receptions (49), receiving yards (707) and TD catches (eight). D’Wayne Eskridge has 30 grabs for 592 yards and three TDs, while Ricci has caught 32 balls for 357 yards and three TDs.

-- No. Illinois has already clinched the MAC’s West Division and will face Buffalo in the MAC Championship Game if the Bulls can win at Bowling Green on Friday.

-- NIU owns a 4-2 record both SU and ATS in six road assignments. The Huskies are 2-0 ATS in a pair of road ‘chalk’ spots this season. They’re a stellar 15-6 ATS in 21 games as road favorite during Rod Carey’s six-year reign as head coach.

-- NIU is ranked No. 123 out of 130 FBS teams in total offense and scoring with its 19.8 points-per-game average. The Huskies are No. 121 in passing yards, but they make up for its on the other side of the ball. NIU is 12th in the country in run defense, 21st in scoring ‘D’ (20.3 PPG) and 27th in total defense.

-- NIU junior DE Sutton Smith was the MAC’s 2017 Defensive Player of the Year when he recorded 14 sacks. He has produced 39 tackles, nine sacks, seven tackles for loss, seven QB hurries, four forced fumbles, two blocked punts including one returned for a TD and one pass broken up.

-- NIU had its six-game winning streak snapped in last week’s 13-7 loss to Miami (OH.) as a 6.5-point home favorite. The Huskies had a 369-201 advantage in total offense, but QB Marcus Childers threw a pick-six that gave the RedHawks the game-winning TD in the third quarter. Tre Harbison rushed for 103 yards on 16 attempts and RB Marcus Jones scored the lone offensive TD on a 29-yard scamper to paydirt.

-- Childers has completed 56.4 percent of his passes for 1,540 yards with a 10/7 TD-INT ratio. He’s rushed for 385 yards and five TDs. Harbison has rushed for a team-best 907 yards and four TDs while averaging 5.6 YPC. Jones has run for 523 yards and four TD with a 5.9 YPC average. Childers has two main targets in WRs Jauan Wesley and D.J. Brown. Wesley has hauled in 45 receptions for 511 yards and two TDs, and Brown has caught 46 balls for 370 yards and three TDs.

-- The ‘over’ is 6-5 overall for the Broncos, 3-2 in their home outings. They’ve seen their games average combined scores of 68.1 PPG.

-- The ‘under’ is 9-2 overall for the Huskies, 4-2 in their road contests. Their games have played to average combined scores of merely 40.1 PPG.

-- Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. Eastern on ESPNU.

**Ball State at Miami-Ohio**

-- This is a non-televised matchup that’ll kick at 7:00 p.m. Eastern. As of late Monday night, most spots had the RedHawks listed as 17-point home ‘chalk’ with at total of 54. The Cardinals were +625 on the money line (risk $100 to win $625).

-- Miami (5-6 SU, 7-4 ATS) is playing to get bowl eligible in this spot. The RedHawks have been a lucrative team to support for gamblers recently, as they’re 6-1 ATS in their past seven games. Chuck Martin’s team has won four of its past six games with the only defeats coming at Army (31-30 in overtime) and at Buffalo (51-42).

-- Miami is 2-3 SU and 3-2 ATS at home. Martin’s squad is 1-1 both SU and ATS as a home favorite. During his five-year tenure, the Red Hawks are 7-9 ATS as home ‘chalk.’

-- This will be senior QB Gus Ragland’s final home game. He has enjoyed another stellar campaign, completing 60.6 percent of his passes for 2,388 yards with a 16/3 TD-INT ratio. Ragland has a 55/11 career TD-INT ratio, in addition to 12 career rushing scores.

-- Miami’s leading rusher in Alonzo Smith, who has 539 rushing yards, six TDs and a 4.4 YPC average. Jack Sorenson is Ragland’s favorite target with 50 receptions for 706 yards and two TDs.

-- Ball State (4-7 SU, 5-6 ATS) snapped a three-game losing streak both SU and ATS with last week’s 42-41 overtime win over Western Michigan as a nine-point home underdog. James Gilbert ran for a pair of TDs and QB Drew Plitt threw for 258 yards and three TDs. Justin Hall had nine receptions for 117 yards, while Riley Miller had five catches for 94 yards and one TD.

-- Ball State junior QB Riley Neal (knee), last year’s leading tackler Jacob White (ankle) and last season’s leading rusher Caleb Huntley (Achilles) are ‘questionable’ at Miami. Neal, who has missed back-to-back games, has thrown for 1,917 yards with an 11/4 TD-IN ratio. He’s also rushed for 357 yards and five TDs. Huntley has missed five consecutive games, rushing for 187 yards and averaging 4.9 YPC in his team’s first six outings. White has recorded 59 tackles, 3.5 TFL’s, three PBU, one sack and one fumble recovery.

-- Plitt has connected on 68-of-102 passes (66.7%) for 833 yards with a 5/6 TD-INT ratio. Miller has 56 receptions for 807 yards and six TDs, while Hall has 66 catches for 589 yards. Corey Lacanarioa has caught 46 balls for 506 yards and three TDs.

-- Ball State is 2-3 ATS as a road underdog this year, 3-4 ATS as a road ‘dog during Mike Neu’s three-year tenure.

-- The ‘over’ is 6-5 overall for Miami, but it has seen the ‘under’ cash in back-to-back games and go 3-2 in its home contests. The RedHawks’ games have played to average combined scores of 52.7 PPG.

-- Really, Oscar?! What we saw Saturday from Urban Meyer on the sidelines of his Ohio State squad’s 52-51 double-overtime win at Maryland was a Drama Queen Performance for the ages! And for those of you – yes, I’m talking to a bunch of national media members – who witnessed it and became "worried" about Oscar’s health, wake the fudge up. We’ve seen this script before. Lest we forget, I called him on it nearly eight years ago. Like I’ve been saying since late August, it’s GUARANTEED he quits in January (at the latest). When times get tough, Oscar gets gone.

-- According to a report out of Arkansas, DBs Kamren Curl and Ryan Pulley are suspended for the regular-season finale at Missouri. Chad Morris told the media during his Monday scrum, "[2 DBs] will not be here today or yesterday or any part of this week for unacceptable behavior." Curl and Pulley, who have combined to make 20 starts this season, were reportedly seen taking photos and socializing with members of Mississippi State’s dance team before kickoff of this past Saturday’s 52-6 loss in Starkville. Curl is the Razorbacks’ fourth-leading tackler with 53 stops, five PBU, one forced fumble and one QB hurry. Pulley has produced 37 tackles, six PBU, three interceptions, one sack, 2.5 TFL’s and one forced fumble.

Early Line Moves - Week 13

Where has the early money gone in college football for Week 13? Bettors are unloading on a number of games this week, including some high profile games, as they are taking West Virginia vs. Oklahoma and Notre Dame at USC.

It is Thanksgiving week, so there are a number of games on Thursday, Friday and Saturday and there are early line moves for games on each day. Let’s look at the nine games that had early live moves of at least two points.

UAB +2.5 to -3 at Middle Tennessee State

This is one of the biggest line moves we have seen recently, and it is a wiseguy move, as the public isn’t betting this game. We almost have to qualify this line move a little bit, as this number moved quickly at the few sportsbooks that put it up first. And we also have to remember that there is not a huge amount of difference in being a 2.5-point underdog or a 2.5-point favorite, as teams rarely win by exactly one or two points. UAB comes into this game at 9-2 SU and 8-4 ATS, while Middle Tennessee is 7-4 SU and ATS.

West Virginia +2 to -1 vs. Oklahoma

This is one of the biggest games of the weekend and it takes place on Friday night on ESPN. The Mountaineers are getting the early money in this one, as they have gone from a 2-point underdog to a 1-point favorite. Oklahoma is 10-1 on the season, but just 4-7 ATS, while West Virginia is 8-2 SU and 6-3 ATS.

Eastern Michigan -10.5 to -13.5 at Kent

Eastern Michigan is 6-5 SU and 7-4 ATS, while Kent is 2-9 SU, but they are 6-5 ATS. Bettors are going against Kent who has one of the worst defenses in college football, as they are giving up 37.5 points per game.

LSU +2 to -1 at Texas A&M

Bettors are taking the Tigers in this one on the road at Texas A&M. This line move seems a little strange, as the Aggies have been a good team this season and LSU is just 5-6 ATS this season. A&M is 7-4 SU and 8-3 ATS.

North Texas -18.5 to -21.5 at UTSA

Bettors are pounding North Texas on the road in this one, as the line has moved past three touchdowns. The Mean Green are 8-3 SU, but just 4-7 ATS, with UTSA is 3-8 SU and 3-7-1 ATS.

Notre Dame -8 to -10.5 at USC

There is not much to like about USC right now and bettors are taking the Fighting Irish on the road. Notre Dame is almost assuredly headed to the College Football Playoff if they win this game, while USC could be looking for a new head coach. The Trojans are 5-6 SU and 3-8 ATS.

UCLA +7 to +4.5 vs. Stanford

This is a strange line move, as bettors are backing the Bruins at home plus the points against Stanford. The Bruins have looked better of late, and they are coming off a win against USC, but the Trojans are not any good. Stanford is 6-4 this season, but all four of their losses were against good teams and now the number is less than a touchdown.

Mississippi State -8.5 to -11 at Mississippi

The Egg Bowl takes place on Thursday and the Bulldogs are getting the early money. Mississippi State is coming off a rout of Arkansas, so they come in confident, while Ole Miss is coming off an overtime loss to Vanderbilt. The Rebels need to win this game to become bowl eligible, but bettors don’t think it is going to happen, as they are backing the Bulldogs.

Ohio -20 to -22 vs. Akron

Bettors are laying the points in this MAC contest on Friday. Ohio comes into this game at 7-4 SU and ATS, while Akron is 4-6 SU and 3-7 ATS. It is easy to see why bettors are backing Ohio, as Akron has one of the worst offenses in college football, as they are averaging just 19.6 points per contest.

Games to Watch - Week 13

This coming weekend is the final week of the regular season in college football and it’s going to be a great one. As always, we are picking out the games to watch this week, but it has been a harder task than usual. The reason it has been so tough is because it’s rivalry week in college football. Not only do we get to see some of the fiercest match-ups in the sport, many of the games have conference and playoff implications.

We have narrowed the list down to 4 great games, two of which actually come on Friday night, so your viewing and wagering will be starting early this week. Let’s jump right in to the action.

Oklahoma Sooners at West Virginia Mountaineers

This has suddenly turned into a must win game for the Mountaineers after their loss to the Oklahoma State Cowboys last week. If they want to get into the Big 12 Championship Game, they need nothing less than a win here, otherwise Texas might just jump ahead of them.

These two come into this crucial match-up with two of the best offenses in the game, but it is the defensive side of the football that has proven to be problematic for both, particularly the Sooners. I think we are in for a shootout here and I like the Mountaineers to edge it.

Washington Huskies at Washington State Cougars

The first game on our list will be played on Friday night, with this one kicking off a half hour later. You are probably going to need to do a little channel surfing to keep up with all the action. The Cougars are still looking at a potential playoff spot, although they will need more than a little help to crack the top 4.

They can help themselves by picking up the win over their in-state rivals on Friday night, a victory that would almost certainly have them looking at one of the big New Year’s bowl games. I like the Cougars to go out and get that win.

Michigan Wolverines at Ohio State Buckeyes

The winner of this one will clinch the Big Ten East Division and head into the championship game to face the Northwestern Wildcats next week. For the Wolverines, a win would also ensure that they stay in the top 4, while the Buckeyes need to win this week and next to keep their hopes of a playoff spot alive.

The problem for the Buckeyes is that while they have been winning, they have been doing so via the great escape route since losing to Purdue a few weeks ago. The Wolverines have been a lot more consistent, which is why I think they come out on Saturday and get the job done.

Auburn Tigers at Alabama Crimson Tide

Of all the match-ups in rivalry week, it may well be the Iron Bowl that is the most storied of them all. The SEC divisions are al locked up and the championship game set, but that does little to diminish the rivalry between these two. While the Crimson Tide have looked pretty near invincible this season, they also know that a loss here could change things dramatically.

It has been a down year for Auburn and they would love to close out the regular season by putting Alabama in a spot of trouble. It’ll be tight early on, but I think Alabama will eventually pull away and win.
