CFL Betting Notes - Week 20
    David Schwab

Last Friday night in the first matchup in an East Division home-and-home series between Hamilton and Ottawa, the RedBlacks took a big step toward locking up first place with a 35-31 victory at home as slight 1 ½-point underdogs.

Later that night, British Columbia secured a spot in the postseason with a 42-32 victory against West Division rival Edmonton as a 1 ½-point favorite at home.

Saturday’s CFL action got underway with Toronto squeezing past Montreal 26-22 at home, but it could not cover the closing 4 ½-point spread. Saskatchewan was able to keep things interesting in the West Division title race with a 29-24 upset against first-place Calgary as a nine-point road underdog.

    Friday, Oct. 26

Calgary Stampeders (12-4 SU, 8-8 ATS) at Winnipeg Blue Bombers (9-7 SU, 9-6-1 ATS)

    Point-spread: Winnipeg -3 ½
    Total: 53 ½

    Game Overview

Calgary has dropped its last two games as a heavy home favorite starting with a Week 18 loss to British Columbia. The Stampeders beat Winnipeg 39-26 on Aug. 25 to cover as 7 ½-point favorites at home, but since that point they are 4-3 straight-up and a costly 2-5 against the spread. The total went OVER 49 ½ points in Saturday’s loss and it has gone OVER in four of their last six games.

The Blue Bombers still control their own destiny for the final playoff berth coming off last week’s bye. They have a game and a half lead over Edmonton heading into this Friday’s contest. Winnipeg has won its last four games both SU and ATS with the total staying UNDER in three of those outings. It remains one of the highest scoring teams in the league and its scoring average during this current winning streak stands a 33.0 points per game.

    Betting Trends

-- The Stampeders have won their last five home games against Winnipeg SU and they have a 5-1-1 edge ATS in the last seven meetings in Calgary. The total has gone OVER in five of the last seven matchups in this West Division clash.

    Saturday, Oct. 27

Ottawa RedBlacks (9-7 SU, 7-9 ATS) at Hamilton Tiger-Cats (8-8 SU, 7-8-1 ATS)

    Point-spread: Hamilton -3
    Total: 54 ½

    Game Overview

Ottawa can lock up the East Division title with a series sweep this Saturday. Hamilton jumped out to a 25-14 lead at the half in last week’s game, but the RedBlacks’ defense stepped things up by holding the Tiger-Cats to just six points in the final two quarters. Ottawa’s Trevor Harris played to form by completing 24 of his 32 passing attempts for 341 yards and one score. Dominique Davis scored a trio of rushing touchdowns on just four rushing attempts.

The Tiger-Cats lost the first meeting this season in a 21-15 setback as six-point home favorites in late July. More recently, Friday’s loss dropped them to 2-3 SU and ATS over their last five games. The total went OVER 54 ½ points on Friday night and it has gone OVER or ended as a PUSH in Hamilton’s last seven outings.

    Betting Trends

-- With a pair of victories this season, Ottawa is 4-1 SU in its last five games against the Tiger-Cats with the total going OVER in six of the last nine meetings in this East Division clash.

British Columbia Lions (9-7 AU, 10-6 ATS) at Saskatchewan Roughriders (11-6 SU, 9-8 ATS)
    Point-spread: Saskatchewan -4
    Total: 52

    Game Overview

This should be a great game between a pair of teams playing their best ball at the right time of the year. BC has won six of its last seven games SU with a 5-2 record ATS. The total went OVER 52 ½ points in Friday’s win against Edmonton after staying UNDER or ending as a PUSH in nine of the Lions’ previous 10 games. Travis Lulay shook off the rust from last week’s shaky start to throw for four touchdowns against the Eskimos.

The Roughriders have just two SU losses in their last 10 games, but they have been less reliable as a betting ream with a 2-4 mark ATS in their last six contests. The total went OVER 49 ½ points against Calgary and it has gone OVER in six of their last eight games. Zach Collaros lit things up for Saskatchewan on Saturday with 352 yards passing while completing 68.6 percent of his 35 passing attempts. The Roughriders added another 140 yards rushing on 24 attempts.

    Betting Trends

-- The Lions have won seven of the last nine meetings SU and ATS with a 5-1 edge ATS in their last six road games against Saskatchewan. The total has stayed UNDER in four of the last five meetings overall.

    Sunday, Oct. 28

Toronto Argonauts (4-12 SU, 6-10 ATS) at Montreal Alouettes (3-13 SU, 9-7 ATS)

    Point-spread: Montreal -1
    Total: 49 ½

    Game Overview

Toronto has the early edge for staying out of the basement in the East coming into this season as the defending Grey Cup Champion. Things have been headed in the wrong direction for quite some time with Saturday’s victory snapping a SU seven-game losing streak. The Argonauts are 2-6 ATS in their last eight games with the total going OVER in five of their last seven games.

The only bright spot in Montreal’s three-win campaign is a winning record ATS. The current losing streak stands at five games, but it has been able to cover in each of its last three outings. The total stayed UNDER 50 points against Toronto and it has stayed UNDER in six of the Alouettes’ last seven games. Johnny Manziel continues to get the start at quarterback and he threw for 220 yards and one score in Saturday’s losing effort.

    Betting Trends

-- The Alouettes are 4-1 both SU and ATS in their last five home games against the Argonauts with the total staying UNDER in five of the last six meetings in Montreal.
