    Top 25 Notes

-- There weren't a lot of upsets on the Saturday slate, as just eight underdogs won outright. However, there was one huge upset which sent shockwaves through the college football world, as Ohio State was pummeled by Purdue by a 49-20 score. The Buckeyes just couldn't stop the rushing attack of the Boilermakers, who suddenly have ripped off four victories in a row after three straight defeats to open the season. As far as the Buckeyes are concerned, they were held to a season-low 20 points and they're now 0-4 ATS over the past four games, and their defense has yielded 26 or more points in five of their eight outings.

-- Colorado played without Laviska Shenault Jr. (foot) in their game at Washington, and the Buffaloes got rolled 27-13. After opening the season 5-0 SU, Colorado has now dropped two in a row. The Huskies rebounded nicely after their loss last week in Oregon. While the chances of a playoff appearance are likely kaput, Washington still has a good chance at a conference title, especially if they play like they did Saturday.

-- LSU did not have any hangover after their huge win over Georgia last week. The Tigers rattled Mississippi State all afternoon in an impressive 19-3 win and defensive performance. They'll need this kind of defensive effort if they wish to slow down top-ranked Alabama, who covered a 29 1/2-point spread on the road at Tennessee, covering with plenty of room to spare. The Tide also took care of the 'over' (57.5) themselves in the 58-21 road rout.

Big Five Conference Report (ACC, Big 10, Big 12, Pac-12, SEC)

-- N.C. State has been a thorn in the side of Clemson for the past few years, and many expected a fight in Death Valley in this battle of the last two unbeatens in the ACC. However, the Tigers were all over them like flies on a rib roast, firing out to a 14-0 lead after the first quarter, a 24-0 lead at halftime and a 31-0 lead after three quarters. The Tigers have covered back-to-back games for the first time this season. ... North Carolina-Syracuse was a barn burner, and a very entertaining game unless you were holding an 'under' (67). See bad beats below. The Orange held on for the 40-37 victory in double-overtime, although the Heels are now 3-1 ATS over their past four games. The 'over' is also 4-1 in UNC's past five.

-- Michigan-Michigan State was a contentious affair like usual, and it probably have been much worse for QB Brian Lewerke. He was just awful in this one, but the Spartans still had a chance late. The Wolverines defense wasn't having any of that, though, and locked it down for a 21-7 win and cover. Michigan has covered a season-high three in a row. ... After disapppintment, close calls and many mistakes, Nebraska finally cracked into the win column after an historic 0-6 SU start. The Cornhuskers pounded Minnesota 53-28 to improve to 2-0-1 ATS over the past three. The 'over' is also a perfect 5-0 over the past five for NU.

-- TCU was no match for Oklahoma in the early kick window. There were just two games in the Big 12 on this day, and both games were decided by 25 or more points. Both favorites won and covered, and the 'over' hit in each game. ... Texas Tech routed Kansas 48-16 to improve to 5-1 SU/ATS over the past six outings.

-- UCLA picked up a second consecutive victory after an 0-5 SU start, but Arizona earned the cover in a surprisingly entertaining 31-30 battle. The Bruins lost starting QB Dorian Thompson-Robinson to an undisclosed injury. The Wildcats know all about that, as they were without QB Khalil Tate (ankle). ... California got rolled last week by UCLA, but they turned the tables on conference punching bag Oregon State this week. The Bears routed the Beavs 49-7 for their first cover since Sept. 8. Overall Cal is still just 2-4-1 ATS. The 'under' has cashed in three in a row. ... Utah roughed up USC by a 41-28 count, as the Trojans just can't seem to get out of their own way on the road. USC is 3-0 SU/2-1 ATS in three home outings, while going 1-3 SU/ATS in four road contests.

-- Vanderbilt-Kentucky was a defensive slog, as the Wildcats grinded out a 14-7 victory. The 'under' is now a perfect 4-0 across the past four outings for Kentucky. ... Missouri stepped out of conference and spanked Memphis by a 65-33 count, nearly taking care of the 'over' (70.5) by themselves. The 'over' is now 5-1-1 for the Mizzou Tigers this season.

    Bad Beats

-- If you had the 'under' (65.5) in the Ohio State-Purdue battle, you were likely feeling pretty good with just 27 points on the board heading into the fourth quarter. That's when the floodgates opened, however, as the teams combined for 42 points in the fourth quarter, including a pick-six with 2:08 to go to push the total over. There were 31 points in the final 4:40 of the game, too.

-- In the Miami (Ohio)-Army (47) battle, there were 21 points on the board until Army extended its lead to 21-7 with :08 to go in the third quarter. Miami scored a touchdown with 4:23 to go in regulation to cut it to 21-14, and then scored the game-tying TD with :17 left to force OT. That's when the teams combined for 19 total points and 'under' bettors were tearing up their tickets.

-- There were 44 points on the board in the UNC-Syracuse (67) game heading into the fourth quarter. UNC led 27-20 until the Orange tied it up 27-27 with 1:39 to go in regulation, forcing OT. Overtime is never what an 'under' bettors wanted to see, but it could have still ended well. It didn't. The teams exchanged touchdowns in the first OT, and UNC kicked a FG in the second OT before Syracuse ended it with a touchdown for 77 total points.

-- There probably aren't a lot of people who bet Idaho State-Liberty, but it was a raw beat if you were on the Flames -7. The Flames scored with 1:27 to play, taking a 48-34 lead, and seemingly a cover. However, the Bengals struck for a touchdown with :24 left to end the game as a push at most shops.

      4th Quarter Covers - Week 8
      Joe Nelson

Glancing at the scoreboard won’t tell you the whole story in most games. Here are some of the games that went down to the wire relative to the spread in the fourth quarter last week in the eighth big college football weekend in late October.

Each week there are several teams that cover despite not necessarily deserving it, as well as other teams that played much better than the final score shows.

      Air Force (-9½) 41, UNLV 35:
UNLV led 21-20 at halftime but Air Force took over in the third quarter with three touchdown drives in the span of just over five minutes of game clock. The Rebels scored late in the third quarter to get back within 13 facing an underdog spread that fell from +11 down to +9½. Air Force fumbled on its first two possessions of the fourth quarter and while UNLV missed a field goal after the first turnover, the Rebels added seven halfway through the fourth quarter to close to within six points. The Rebels were a threat for the upset but failed on 4th down after reaching the Air Force 28-yard-line late in the game. Air Force reached the UNLV 24-yard-line in the final seconds but didn’t add points as the underdog Rebels covered Friday night.

      Temple (-2½) 24, Cincinnati 17:
Temple got off to a fast start vs. undefeated Cincinnati with a 10-0 edge only six minutes into the game. The Bearcats took over from there taking a 17-10 edge into the fourth quarter. Following back-to-back interceptions, Temple got one last shot getting the ball back with just over two minutes remaining and made the most of it as Anthony Russo delivered a touchdown drive, tying the game with 49 seconds remaining. The Owls kept the momentum going first in overtime and needing only three plays to get seven. Cincinnati picked up 11 yards on first down looking to extend the game but went backwards from there with a fumble and a penalty. Facing 3rd-and-long, Desmond Ridder was intercepted as the Owls stole the win and got a very fortunate cover on a line that was -3½ most of the week.

      Army (-6½) 31, Miami, OH 30:
Army led 21-7 through three quarters but Miami managed to tie the game with two touchdown drives in the final five minutes, scoring the second tying touchdown with just 17 seconds remaining. In the first overtime field goals were exchanged. Army gave favorite backers a glimmer of hope to re-gain the cover with a quick touchdown leading off the second overtime going up by seven. Army had Miami down to 4th-and-15 but the Redhawks hit for an 18-yard touchdown. Miami opted to go for two and came up short but it was enough for the underdog to cover the spread. It was a tough luck result for those on the ‘under’ closing at 47 with just 28 points combined 55 minutes into the game and the ‘under’ still holding on at the end of regulation.

      Michigan (-7½) 21, Michigan State 7:
A lengthy early weather delay robbed Michigan State of some early momentum but they got a big turnover in the third quarter to knot the game at 7-7. Late in the third Michigan hit the only big offensive play of the game with a 79-yard score for Donovan Peoples-Jones but Michigan led just 14-7 well into the fourth quarter laying -7 or -7½ in East Lansing. The Wolverines converted a big 4th down just across midfield and eventually added another touchdown with about 10 minutes to go. Michigan State was soundly out-gained but still had a good shot to get back within seven, reaching the Michigan 24-yard-line with just under two minutes remaining. Back-to-back sacks ended the threat as the Wolverines ended their decade-long ATS skid in this series.

      Buffalo (+3) 31, Toledo 17:
Initially dogged and then moving to a favorite role, Buffalo closed back as the slight underdog in this key MAC battle. Buffalo had a massive production edge but trailed 17-7 at halftime. The Bulls tied the game by the start of the third quarter and added two fourth quarter touchdowns to pull away, moving to 4-0 as the leader in the MAC East.

      Wisconsin (-24) 49, Illinois 20:
With October snow in Madison this was a sloppy Big Ten contest with seven combined turnovers. Illinois scored first in the second half to trail by only 11 but the Badgers pushed the advantage to 25 points by the end of the third quarter. An Illinois field goal put the underdog briefly in position to cash but the Badgers finished an 86-yard drive later in the quarter to create the 29-point final margin.

      Utah State (-13) 24, Wyoming 16:
On contrasting six-game ATS streaks, Utah State appeared to be in line to keep its perfect spread season alive as a 99-yard kickoff return touchdown put the Aggies up 24-6 late in the third quarter. Nico Evans broke a long run for Wyoming to close to within 11 however and the Cowboys got within a single-score with a fourth quarter field goal. Utah State was not a threat to add late points in a game they finished with only 194 total yards, as Wyoming did enough for the home underdog cover.

      Houston (-11) 49, Navy 36:
The Cougars were as high as a 13-point favorite early in the week and an upset looked possible as Navy led 24-14 late in the second quarter. A quick touchdown put Houston within three by halftime and the Cougars wound up with a pair of late third quarter scores to lead by 11 entering the fourth, even with the closing number. Houston would pull away in the middle of the fourth with two more scores, the second coming on an interception return touchdown to lead by 25 with only six minutes remaining. Navy would wind up with two touchdowns in the final two minutes but both times they went for two and failed, leaving points off the board as Houston escaped with a narrow road favorite cover for most.

      Washington (-18½) 27, Colorado 13:
The Huskies led only 14-13 at the half but Colorado wouldn’t score again in this rematch of the 2016 Pac-12 title game. Washington settled for a field goal in the third quarter to lead by four and appeared set to add seven more but fumbled through the end zone for a touchback early in the fourth. Washington kept favorite cover hopes alive on a spread that grew from -15½ to -18½ by getting a 4th down touchdown with four minutes to go to lead by 11. An interception gave the Huskies the ball right back in the red zone but Washington had to settle for a short field goal. After Colorado failed on downs on its own 12-yard-line the Huskies ended the game on the door step but was able to take a knee as the Buffaloes held the underdog cover.

      Akron (-5) 24, Kent State 23:
This MAC rivalry was knotted at 17-17 through three quarters and neither team wound up scoring in the fourth as regulation ended with nine consecutive punts. Akron went first in overtime and got a roughing the passer penalty on first down. Two plays later the Zips were up by seven, just past the road favorite spread. Kent State connected for a 29-yard touchdown on 2nd down and went for the win, coming up just short but getting the underdog cover.

      Penn State (-14) 33, Indiana 28:
This was a tight game with Indiana posting significantly more yardage. Penn State broke through with consecutive touchdowns in the third quarter to lead by 12 with an extra-point blocked. The Hoosiers fumbled to give Penn State the ball back but the drive stalled just outside of field goal range. Indiana had an interception on its next drive but the Lions couldn’t add points to get past the favorite spread. Indiana wound up in position to be a late upset threat scoring in the final minute and then recovering the on-side kick but didn’t get close enough for a shot at the end zone in the final seconds.

      UL-Monroe (-11) 20, Texas State 14:
The Warhawks led 20-7 heading into the fourth quarter and had the ball back after Texas State missed a field goal. Near midfield UL-Monroe fumbled and set-up Texas State for a short field drive, where they scored a touchdown to trim the margin to six points with seven minutes to go.

      UCF (-21½) 37, East Carolina 10:
The hefty underdog Pirates moved the ball with ease, soundly out-gaining highly ranked UCF with nearly 500 yards of offense. East Carolina lost the turnover battle 5-0 however to wind up losing by 27. Into the fourth quarter East Carolina trailed by just 13 and was set to make it a one-score game with about 10 minutes remaining, reaching the 1-yard-line. Holton Ahlers fumbled and it was returned all the way for a Knights touchdown for a 14-point swing putting UCF up by 20. East Carolina went 69 yards in five plays before fumbling again inside the 10, setting up another Knights touchdown to push the margin past the road favorite spread. In the final minutes East Carolina had 1st-and-goal at the 3-yard-line before ultimately failing on four tries to get in the end zone as UCF somehow won and covered the massive spread without McKenzie Milton in a game with a box score that didn’t fit the outcome as the hefty underdog had big production advantages.

      Southern Miss (-16) 27, Texas-San Antonio 17:
Southern Miss led 27-3 at one point int his game, a contest they compiled a 487-174 yardage advantage. Turnovers kept points off the board however and in the fourth quarter Texas San Antonio delivered a defensive touchdown to cut the margin to 10 points.

      UAB (-2½) 29, North Texas 21:
The Mean Green led 21-10 at the half but UAB chipped away and trailed by just two heading into the fourth quarter. In the first minute of the final frame the Blazers completed a touchdown drive to lead by five and then later caught a big break with a North Texas fumble inside the 10-yard line. UAB would put together a long drive to add a field goal with two minutes remaining and held off a late threat from North Texas.

      SMU (+9½) 27, Tulane 23:
The spread on this game climbed dramatically on Saturday as Tulane was just -7 much of the week. They were past the early week numbers with a 23-14 lead early in the fourth quarter but SMU answered with a quick touchdown drive to climb within two. SMU wasn’t able to take advantage of a fourth quarter fumble for the Wave but had one big play left with a 67-yard touchdown pass with just over a minute remaining for the win. Tulane reached midfield before fumbling on its final possession.

      Old Dominion (+3½) 37, Western Kentucky 34:
The Hilltoppers led 27-19 heading into the fourth quarter to sit past the small favorite spread. There was no scoring in the first nine minutes of the fourth before a wild finish. Old Dominion scored a touchdown and got the two-point conversion to tie the game with just over five minutes remaining but Western Kentucky eventually went back in front by seven with just over a minute left on the clock. Old Dominion managed to go 69 yards in just over a minute to tie the game with nine seconds remaining, presumably forcing overtime. After the kickoff, Western Kentucky got 15 yards on first down and with two seconds remaining near midfield they didn’t settle for overtime, attempting a hook & ladder play that fell incomplete. Roughing the passer was called on the play however, leading to an untimed down. The Hilltoppers opted for a long field goal try of around 57 yards which fell short but Old Dominion was hit with too many men on the field. Five yards closer Western Kentucky tried the kick again and again fell short with the Monarchs having a returner in place fielding the kick this time around and Isaiah Harper nearly went the distance for a miraculous win but was knocked out of bounds near the 15-yard-line. On that tackle from a desperate offensive lineman, a facemask penalty gave the Monarchs an untimed down and they hit the short 26-yard field goal for one of the more incredible finishes to a game, ultimately getting 10 points in nine seconds of game clock. Old Dominion may be just 2-6 this season but they have two of the most memorable wins of the season.

Early bettors on Florida's odds in college football Week 9 clash vs. Georgia
                Patrick Everson

Florida will have more to celebrate if it can pull of an upset Saturday against Georgia in the World's Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party. The Gators drew early action after opening as 7-point underdogs.

We’re heading toward the final weekend of October in college football, with the World’s Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party highlighting the Week 9 docket. We check in on the opening lines and early action for that game and three others, with insights from Derek Wilkinson, sportsbook supervisor at The SuperBook at Westgate in Las Vegas.

No. 11 Florida Gators vs. No. 6 Georgia Bulldogs (-7)

Georgia made it to the national championship game last season and is looking to reassert itself ahead of next week’s release of the College Football Playoff rankings. The Bulldogs (6-1 SU, 3-4 ATS) are coming off their first loss of the 2018-19 campaign, a 36-16 wipeout at Louisiana State as 7-point favorites in Week 7. The Dawgs had a bye in Week 8.

Florida is also 6-1 SU – and 6-1 ATS as well – as it heads to Jacksonville for this annual neutral-site showdown. The Gators are also coming off a bye, after an unexpectedly difficult game at Vanderbilt in which it trailed 21-3 in the second quarter and rallied for a 37-27 victory as 9.5-point faves.

“This SEC East matchup should be a fun game to watch,” Wilkinson said. “It’s basically a home game for Florida, even though they call Jacksonville a ‘neutral site.’ I like Georgia to bounce back after the loss to LSU, but the early action has been on Florida.”

That said, it wasn’t enough action to move the number off the opener of Georgia -7.

No. 18 Iowa Hawkeyes at No. 16 Penn State Nittany Lions (-6)

Penn State looked like a team worthy of high CFP consideration when it led 26-14 at home with eight minutes left against Ohio State in Week 5. Then the Nittany Lions let that game get away, had a bye in Week 6, and lost at home to Michigan State in Week 7. Penn State (5-2 SU, 4-3 ATS) narrowly got back on track last weekend with a 33-28 win at Indiana as 14-point chalk.

Iowa bounced back from a home loss to Wisconsin with three convincing Big Ten wins, cashing in all three games. In Week 8, the Hawkeyes (6-1 SU and ATS) blanked Maryland 23-0 laying 9.5 points at home.

“We took a large wager on Iowa not long after putting up the line, so we’ve moved it down to -5.5,” Wilkinson said. “Penn State hasn’t looked that great recently, but Iowa has been playing really well. I think that line will be 4.5 or 5 by Saturday.”

However, the number ticked back to the opener of 6 late Monday night.

No. 15 Washington State Cougars at No. 23 Stanford Cardinal (-3.5)

Washington State has been the pointspread bettors’ best friend all season long, and Mike Leach’s troops have been solid on the field as well. The Cougars (6-1 SU, 7-0 ATS) dumped Oregon 34-20 giving 3 points at home in Week 8.

Stanford put a two-game slide behind it in a Thursday night Week 8 game. The Cardinal (5-2 SU, 4-3 ATS) held off Arizona State 20-13 laying 2 points on the road.

“We opened this line a little high in my opinion and are already at -3,” Wilkinson said. “We still made Stanford the favorite at home, but I think the Cougars are going to win this outright. I expect that line to go down a little more in the coming days.”

No. 7 Texas Longhorns at No. 21 Oklahoma State Cowboys (+3)

Texas hasn’t lost since Week 1 and hopes to continue shoring up its CFP credentials this week. The Longhorns (6-1 SU, 3-4 ATS), who had a bye in Week 8, fended off Baylor 23-17 as 14-point home faves in Week 7.

Oklahoma State rolled in its first three games, then lost three of its last four outings. The Cowboys (4-3 SU, 3-4 ATS), also coming off a bye, went to Kansas State as 8-point favorites and got thumped 31-12 in Week 7.

“We’ve already gotten some action on Texas,” Wilkinson said. “It looks like Longhorns quarterback Sam Ehlinger is going to play, despite spraining his shoulder (against Baylor). I think the line is low because everyone is unsure how he’ll play. I think that line is going to go up as the week progresses and that Texas is going to cover it easily.”

Despite the early Texas money, the line was still at Longhorns -3 late Monday night.

                    Joe Nelson

Here is a look at Thursday’s Big XII game to start the final October college football weekend.

Match-up: Baylor Bears at West Virginia Mountaineers

                    Line: West Virginia -14, Over/Under 62
Last Meeting: 2017, West Virginia (-10) 38, at Baylor 36

The Mountaineers climbed to No. 6 in the polls with a 5-0 start to the season but hopes of emerging as a sleeper in the national picture were extinguished with a mid-October loss at Iowa State. The 30-14 final score didn’t do justice to how badly West Virginia lost as one of its touchdowns came on a blocked field goal return while they wound up out-gained 498-152 in what head coach Dan Hologorsen called “the worst offensive performance I have ever seen.”

Having a bye week to regroup should be useful for West Virginia, who still controls its destiny in the Big XII race. Next week West Virginia head to Austin to face the current conference leader Texas while the Mountaineers host Oklahoma in the regular season finale. West Virginia is 3-0 at home with dominant numbers including a 35-6 win over Kansas State and they beat the other one-loss squad Texas Tech on the road.

The offense is led by Will Grier, who has thrown for over 1,900 yards with 22 touchdowns and 10.0 yards per attempt. He owns the third best QB Rating in the nation but has thrown seven interceptions while taking 18 sacks as a lot is asked of him in Holgorsen’s offense. Grier has a very talented receiving corps to work with and big plays have been the norm in this offense that features about a 50/50 run/pass split.

After allowing 20 points in the first two FBS games of the season West Virginia has allowed 86 points in the past three Big XII games. Last season West Virginia surrendered over 31 points per game and 446 yards per game while finishing 7-6 and improvement defensively down the stretch will be the key to keeping the Mountaineers in Big XII contention.

Holgorsen is in his eighth season and despite some setbacks he has posted a 58-38 record and has had the Mountaineers in a bowl games in all but one season. Two years ago the Mountaineers won 10 games with a 7-2 Big XII record and getting his team in the Big XII title game would be a big milestone for the program.

Matt Rhule stepped into a challenging situation last year at Baylor following the multi-year fallout surrounding the departure of Art Briles. Rhule had a successful rebuild at Temple and was a respected hire if not a flashy choice. His tenure could not have started worse, losing to then FCS level Liberty as well as Texas-San Antonio in the first two games and eventually winding up 1-11 with only a win over Kansas.

Several results were competitive for the Bears however with an eight-point loss to Oklahoma and a two-point loss in this matchup with West Virginia. That game was fairly even statistically but West Virginia had a 38-13 lead before a great fourth quarter rally from Baylor.

Then a freshman, Charlie Brewer took over at quarterback in that game and posted solid numbers the rest of the season. This year Brewer has just three interceptions along with 10 touchdowns leading the offense. He has already surpassed last season’s passing yardage total but is completing passes at a much lower completion rate this season while also posting a lower yards per attempt average.

Baylor hasn’t been a great rushing team but after averaging only 3.4 yards per rush last season the Bears are posting 4.4 yards per rush this season with a committee approach led by JaMycal Hasty. Jalen Hurd has been the go-to receiver with 622 receiving yards and 47 receptions this season.

Baylor and West Virginia had fairly similar defensive statistics last season despite the contrasting records. This season the pass defense numbers are also very close with a slight edge to the Bears in completion rate and yards per attempt but Baylor has allowed more passing touchdowns while generating fewer interceptions. Run defense was the weakness for Baylor last season and this year the Bears have surrendered 5.7 yards per rush, seventh worst nationally and it will be interesting to see if the Mountaineers attack on the ground more than usual this week.

This year Baylor has allowed 31 points per game but surrendering 66 at Oklahoma weighs on the numbers. The Bears have already played Oklahoma and Texas while West Virginia is still to play both of the conference heavyweights to factor into the numbers. In its last game Baylor had the ball down six at Texas seeking a major upset. Brewer led the Bears inside the Texas 20-yard line but his final three passes all fell incomplete for a narrow defeat but it was a confidence-building effort as the Bears will feel like they can compete in every conference game.

                    Last season:
West Virginia was in the national top 25 visiting winless Baylor in late October. The Mountaineers led 17-6 at halftime and 38-13 through three quarters to sit comfortably in front. Baylor scored two quick touchdowns early in the fourth quarter with a successful on-side kick in-between the scores. The Bears would add a field goal to trail by eight, eventually getting the ball back with fewer than five minutes remaining. Baylor was able to complete an 86-yard touchdown drive with 17 seconds remaining with a 3rd down score but failed on the two-point conversion that could have forced overtime. Grier threw five touchdowns in the game while the Bears out-rushed West Virginia 127-118 in a contest without a turnover.

                    Series History:
Since West Virginia joined the Big XII in 2012 the Mountaineers are 4-2 S/U but just 1-5 ATS in this series. There has been great variance in the spreads with Baylor -30 in the 2013 meeting while West Virginia was -17½ in 2016. The most memorable and consequential meeting was the 2014 upset in Morgantown by West Virginia, winning 41-27 as an 8-point underdog. That was Baylor’s only loss on the regular season and they finished 11-1 and ranked #5 in the College Football Playoff rankings by season’s end. Ohio State controversially passed up TCU, who had been ranked #3 and shared the Big XII title with Baylor, in the final rankings to leave the Big XII out of the playoffs that season.

                    Historical Trends:

-- West Virginia is 33-44-3 ATS at home since 2006, going 28-38-3 ATS as a favorite, and 20-25-3 ATS as a double-digit favorite.

-- Baylor is 16-20 ATS on the road since 2011, going 8-7 ATS as a road underdog and 6-5 ATS as a double-digit underdog.

                      Spartans Down Another Skill Player

It's one thing for Michigan State quarterback Brian Lewerke to bounce back from one of the worst performances by a Power 5 quarterback this season. The fact that he'll have to do it without one of his top receivers makes the task even more daunting. Felton Davis III suffered a torn Achilles tendon in Saturday's loss to rival Michigan and will undergo season-ending surgery. It's a major blow for the Spartans; Davis has racked up 474 yards and four touchdowns on the season, and caught the game-winning TD score in the Spartans' Oct. 13 win over Penn State.

With Davis just the latest Michigan State skill player to go down, the Spartans could be in tough to cover -2.5 at home to a Purdue team that just knocked off Ohio State. Bettors should consider backing the visitors and the Under in this one, with Davis having been responsible for nearly half of the Spartans' nine receiving scores.

                      Annexstad's Status in Doubt

The Minnesota Golden Gophers might have someone different under center for their Friday encounter with visiting Indiana. Zack Annexstad suffered an internal midsection injury in the first half of last weekend's 53-28 loss to Nebraska, and head coach P.J. Fleck doesn't know if he'll recover in time for Friday's game after being hospitalized for a brief time. It has been an up-and-down season for the freshman quarterback, who has completed under 52 percent of his passes on the season for 1,277 yards with nine touchdowns and seven interceptions.

Tanner Morgan would get the call if Annexstad couldn't go – and that might actually represent an improvement for the Golden Gophers, given Annexstad's struggles and the fact that he hasn't been completely healthy since mid-September. Bettors should take a long look at Minnesota +2.5 against the Hoosiers if Morgan gets the start.

                      TCU's Turpin Dismissed From Team

The new week has alreday been a tumultuous one for the Texas Christian Horned Frogs, who have kicked one of their top receivers off the team. KaVontae Turpin was dismissed after being arrested and charged with bodily injury of a family member over the weekend. It's the second time Turpin has been arrested following a charge of suspicion of battery of a household member back in March. It's the latest bit of sobering news for the Horned Frogs, who learned they'll be without sophomore quarterback Shawn Robinson for the remainder of the season due to a shoulder injury.

TCU enters this weekend's showdown with Kansas as a 13.5-point favorite, but these latest developments should make the Jayhawks a popular cover pick. TCU has scored 17 or fewer points in three of its past four games, and is a good bet to slide under its team total in this one.

LSU's White Out for First Half

The LSU Tigers will go into their biggest game of the year without the services of their top defensive player for the opening 30 minutes. Linebacker Devin White has had his half-game suspension upheld after he was flagged for a targeting penalty in last weekend's victory over Mississippi State. With the penalty coming after halftime, White was automatically given a ban for the first two quarters of the Tigers' next game – and that contest just happens to be against the top-ranked Alabama Crimson Tide, who head to Tiger Stadium for a marquee encounter Nov. 3.

With both teams on a bye this week, oddsmakers have set the early line for the Alabama-LSU clash at Tigers +14. With White out for the opening two quarters, bettors should keep an eye on the first-half spread and Crimson Tide team total.

                            Friday's Tip Sheet
                            Brian Edwards

                            **Miami at Boston College**

-- Both teams have had two weeks to prepare for this ACC showdown. As of Thursday morning, most betting shops had Miami (5-2 straight up, 3-4 against the spread) installed as a 3.5-point favorite with a total of 49.5. The Eagles were +145 on the money line (risk $100 to win $145).

-- Boston College (5-2 SU, 5-2 ATS) is undefeated in four home games with a 3-1 spread record. The Eagles have beaten UMass (55-21), Holy Cross (62-14), Temple (45-35) and Louisville (38-20), with the lone non-cover coming against the Owls as 13-point home ‘chalk.’ They took the cash as 11-point home favorites vs. U of L last week, as the 58 combined points inched ‘over’ the 56.5-point total. With just a 24-20 advantage early in the fourth quarter, BC’s David Bailey scored on a one-yard touchdown run. Then with 3:34 remaining, Jeff Smith’s five-yard dash into the end zone gave BC the spread cover and allowed ‘over’ backers to rejoice. The Eagles had a 20-15 edge over the Cardinals in first downs and a 430-217 advantage in total offense. Anthony Brown completed 16-of-22 passes for 179 yards and one TD without an interception. Bailey rushed for 112 yards and one TD on 28 carries, while Ben Glines ran 17 times for 107 yards and one score.

-- BC star sophomore RB A.J. Dillon is ‘probable’ and set to return Friday night after missing back-to-back games with a sprained ankle. Dillon, a first-team All-ACC selection as a freshman in 2017 when he ran for 1,589 yards and 14 TDs, has rushed for 652 yards and six TDs with a 6.2 yards-per-carry average.

-- Boston College owns a 7-8 spread record in 15 games as a home underdog during Steve Addazio’s six-year tenure.

-- Brown, a third-year sophomore QB, has completed 58.7 percent of his throws for 1,238 yards with a 14/4 touchdown-to-interception ratio. Sophomore WR Kobay White has 15 receptions for 265 yards and three TDs, while Smith has 14 catches for 255 yards and three TDs.

-- Miami saw its five-game winning streak snapped in a 16-13 loss at Virginia as a seven-point road favorite on Oct. 13. Redshirt freshman QB N’Kosi Perry threw two first-half interceptions and was yanked in favor of senior QB Malik Rosier, who connected on 12-of-23 passes for 170 yards with one interception. Rosier ran for an 11-yard TD with 3:04 remaining to slice the deficit to three, but it was too little and too late for the Hurricanes. Travis Homer rushed for 95 yards on eight carries and made three catches for 50 yards. Trajan Bandy had a pair of interceptions for UM in the losing effort.

-- Mark Richt has decided to go back to Rosier as his starting QB in what seems to be an odd decision. Rosier has completed 52.1 percent of his passes for 781 yards with a 5/3 TD-INT ratio. However, he has just one TD pass compared to three picks in the two games he’s played in against Power Five opponents. Perry has a 56.2 completion percentage for 666 passing yards with an 11/5 TD-INT ratio. He had four TD passes without an interception to rally Miami to a 28-27 home win over FSU on Oct. 6.

-- Homer, a second-team All-ACC honoree in 2017, has rushed for a team-high 529 yards and one TD while averaging 5.8 YPC. He also has six catches for 68 yards. RB Deejay Dallas has 393 rushing yards, two TDs and a 5.8 YPC average. True freshman Lorenzo Lingard, the prize jewel of Richt’s most recent recruiting class, has run for 136 yards and two TDs with an 8.0 YPC average. However, Lingard injured his knee earlier this week and is ‘out’ indefinitely.

-- Jeff Thomas has emerged as UM’s top wideout, catching 17 balls for 401 yards and three TDs. Lawrence Cager has 15 receptions for 265 yards and six TDs, while Brevin Jordan has 18 grabs for 208 yards and four TDs.

-- Miami has compiled a 7-4 spread record as a road favorite on Richt’s watch since he took the job in 2016.

-- The ‘over’ is 5-2 overall for BC, 4-0 in its home games. The Eagles have seen their games average combined scores of 65.6 points per game.

-- The ‘over’ is 5-2 overall for the ‘Canes, 1-1 in their road assignments. They’ve seen their games average combined scores of 55.6 PPG.

-- These former Big East rivals haven’t squared off since 2012. UM owns a 24-5 lead in the all-time series, including a 41-32 victory as a two-point road favorite in 2012. Going back to 2001, the ‘under’ is on a 5-1 run in the past six games in this rivalry.

-- Kickoff from Alumni Stadium in Chestnut Hill is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. Eastern on ESPN. According to weather.com, the forecast is for cloudy skies with showers later at night. Winds are expected to be at around 10 miles per hour with temperatures in the upper 30s.

                            **Utah at UCLA**

-- As of Thursday morning, most books had Utah (5-2 straight up, 4-3 against the spread) listed as a 10.5-point favorite with a total of 54.5. The Bruins were +320 on the money line (risk $100 to win $320). The forecast is for perfect football weather – clear skies, light wind and a low temperature in the mid-60s.

-- Utah has won three consecutive games both SU and ATS to take over first place in the Pac-12 South with a 3-2 record in league play. USC is also 3-2 in conference action, but the Utes own the tiebreaker over the Trojans after beating them 41-28 as 6.5-point home ‘chalk’ last week. Junior QB Tyler Huntley balled out with 22 completions on 29 throws for 341 passing yards and four TDs without an interception. Huntley also ran for 33 yards and one TD. Zack Moss ran 25 times for 136 yards, and WR Britain Covey had four receptions for 79 yards and one TD.

-- Kyle Whittingham’s squad is 2-1 SU and 1-2 ATS in three road outings to date. The Utes have failed to cover the number in a pair of games as road favorites this year. They won 17-6 at No. Illinois but needed a late pick-six to seal the game and didn’t cover as 12.5-point ‘chalk.’ As a 1.5-point road favorite at Washington State, Utah lost by a 28-24 count.

-- Huntley has completed 65.5 percent of his passes for 1,536 yards with an 11/3 TD-INT ratio. He has rushed for 240 yards and four TDs as well. Moss has run for a team-best 753 yards and seven TDs while averaging 5.6 YPC. He also has six catches for 36 yards and one TD. Covey has a team-best 42 receptions for 458 yards and one TD, in addition to rushing for 88 yards on nine attempts. He’s also completed 2-of-2 passes for 64 yards and one TD. Covey is ranked 10th in the Pac-12 in all-purpose yards with 677.

-- Utah’s defense is led by senior LB Chase Hansen, who has 63 tackles, 10 tackles for loss, four sacks, one QB hurry and two interceptions for 40 return yards and one TD. The Utes are ranked seventh in the nation in total defense, No. 1 at defending the run and 16th in scoring ‘D’ (17.7 PPG).

-- UCLA (2-5 SU, 3-4 ATS) got off to an atrocious 0-5 start to begin The Chip Kelly Era, only to respond with back-to-back victories at California (37-7) and vs. Arizona (31-30). Junior RB Joshua Kelley rushed 31 times for 136 yards and one TD, and he also had four catches for 43 yards in last week’s triumph over the Wildcats, who took the cash as 10-point road underdogs. Wilton Speight, the grad transfer QB from Michigan, hit on 17-of-27 pass attempts for 204 yards and two TDs without an interception. Theo Howard had three receptions for 84 yards, while Caleb Wilson had six catches for 82 yards.

-- UCLA has lost three of its four home games both SU and ATS. The Bruins have tasted defeat vs. Cincinnati (26-17), vs. Fresno State (38-14) and vs. Washington (31-24). Their lone spread cover came as 21-point home underdogs vs. the Huskies.

-- UCLA true freshman QB Dorian Thompson-Robinson left last week’s game due to an arm injury, but he’s been upgraded to ‘probable’ vs. Utah. Thompson-Robinson has a 60.2 completion percentage, 1,176 passing yards with a 6/3 TD-INT ratio. Speight will be ready if needed. He has completed 64.1 percent of his throws for 249 yards with a 2/1 TD-INT ratio.

-- Junior RB Joshua Kelley has emerged as the Bruins’ featured back, rushing for 569 yards and five TDs while averaging 5.5 YPC. Wilson has a team-best 29 receptions for 417 yards and one TD, and Howard has 28 grabs for 371 yards and two TDs. Kelley also has 15 catches for 119 yards.

-- This Pac-12 South rivalry has seen Utah prevail in back-to-back meetings and three of the past four both SU and ATS. The ‘under’ cashed in five consecutive encounters from 2011-15, but the ‘over’ has been a winner the past two games. Utah destroyed UCLA 48-17 as a 9.5-point home favorite last year, with the 65 combined points jumping ‘over’ the 53.5-point tally. Huntley threw for 234 yards and four TDs without an interception, and he rushed 18 times for 93 yards. Moss produced 153 rushing yards and two TDs on 23 attempts.

-- Utah won 52-45 at UCLA as a 3.5-point road underdog in 2016. Both teams scored enough points on their own to get ‘over’ the 42.5-point total.

-- The ‘over’ is 4-3 overall for Utah, 2-1 in its road contests. The Utes have watched their games average combined scores of 48.0 PPG.

-- The ‘over’ is 4-3 overall for the Bruins, 3-1 in their home outings. They’ve seen their games play to average combined scores of 54.1 PPG.

-- Kickoff is slated for 10:30 p.m. Eastern on ESPN.

                            **B.E.’s Bonus Nuggets**

-- If you don’t follow me on Twitter or listen to my Games Galore podcast (feel free to subscribe on i-tunes and those other various pod platforms) or catch me on radio shows as a weekly guest with Chris Vernon (Fridays in Memphis), Sharp & Benning (1620 The Zone in Omaha on Thursday’s at 11:40 a.m. Eastern) or Qualk & Kelly (on The Roar in Clemson), then perhaps you haven’t heard of my recent guarantee? I’ve been suggesting it since the presser announcing the Ohio State head football coach’s three-game suspension, but it’s now been upgraded to GUARANTEE status: Oscar Liar will quit (or perhaps even get fired or agree to some sort of buyout) by Jan. 15 of 2019 at the absolute latest. Trust me, folks! When times get tough, Oscar gets gone. You will see soon…

-- BetOnline.ag has Alabama as the -175 favorite to win the College Football Playoff. If you want the field (any other team), you can get a +145 return. It’s October still, people, and the Crimson Tide is nearly a -200 ‘chalk’ to repeat as national champs. That’s utterly ridiculous, but more than fair. Look, we know we’ve got to let the games play out. Shit happens during a football season. Stuff like injuries, suspensions, chemistry issues, friction between coaching staff members, etc. But the only type of shit that’s going to prevent Nick Saban’s team from winning the CFP is a slew of injuries to at least four starters and one of them must include the Heisman Trophy favorite, sophomore QB Tua Tagovailoa. Otherwise, the Tide is just going to keep on rolling and remember, Tagovailoa is back next year, too. Holy Yikes!

-- Tagovailoa is the -300 ‘chalk’ to win the Heisman at BetOnline.ag. The next-shortest odds belong to Oklahoma’s Kyler Murray (+325), Ohio State’s Dwayne Haskins (6/1), PSU’s Trace McSorley (14/1), WVU’s Will Grier (18/1), UCF’s McKenzie Milton (20/1), Kentucky’s Benny Snell (50/1), Wisconsin’s Jonathan Taylor (50/1) and Oregon’s Justin Herbert (66/1).

-- FAU is a 3.5-point home favorite for Friday’s C-USA matchup vs. La. Tech in Boca Raton. Owls’ starting QB Chris Robison is ‘questionable’ with an ankle injury. Robison has been mediocre this season, anyway, throwing eight TD passes compared to 10 interceptions. He’s run for 183 yards and a pair of scores. Senior safety Jalen Young is also a question mark due to a knee injury. Young was a first-team All-CUSA pick in 2017 when he had 77 tackles and seven interceptions. La. Tech is 3-1 both SU and ATS in four road assignments, with the lone outright defeat coming at LSU. The CBS Sports College Network will have the telecast at 6:30 p.m. Eastern.

-- On FS1 at 8:00 p.m. Eastern on Friday, Minnesota (3-4 SU, 4-3 ATS) will play host to Indiana (4-4 SU, 3-5 ATS) as a 2.5-point home underdog. The total was 54 late Thursday. Since starting P.J. Fleck’s second campaign with the Gophers 3-0 both SU and ATS, they’ve lost four games in a row against Big Ten competition by margins of 25, 16, 17 and 29 points.

-- 5Dimes.eu has updated some of its Games of the Year lines. Some examples include Texas -3 vs. WVU, Michigan -8.5 vs. PSU, PSU -7 vs. Wisconsin, Ohio State -2.5 vs. Michigan and Notre Dame -7.5 vs. USC.

-- You think TCU (3-4 SU, 2-5 ATS) head coach Gary Patterson was tired of KeVontae Turpin’s nonsense? When Patterson dismissed him from the program earlier this week after learning about an arrest this past Sunday and another one back in March, he told reporters that he hadn’t even informed Turpin yet but that the senior WR and special-teams ace could find out on Twitter. Turpin had 29 receptions for 410 yards and three TDs. He also returned a punt and a kickoff back for a TD. The Horned Frogs have also lost QB Shawn Robinson to a season-ending injury. Robinson (60.6%) has thrown for 1,326 yards with a mediocre 9/8 TD-INT ratio. Sophomore signal caller Michael Collins will get the starting nod at Kansas. Collins has completed only 13-of-31 throws (41.9%) for 247 yards with a 3/1 TD-INT ratio.

-- Michigan State lost its best WR Felton Davis to a season-ending Achilles injury in last week’s home loss to Michigan. Davis was a second-team All-B10 selection last year when he had 55 receptions for 776 yards and nine TDs. The senior, who has played his last down for the Spartans, had 31 catches for 474 yards and four TDs in seven games this season. Also, QB Brian Lewerke is ‘questionable’ with a shoulder injury (at least as of early Thursday) for this week’s home game vs. Purdue. The Boilermakers have won four games in a row and won over the hearts of America by not only destroying Ohio State, but introducing us to its inspiring fan Tyler Trent, who is courageously battling cancer like the incredible fighter that he is.

-- Wisconsin has been one of the nation’s biggest disappointments, yet it still controls its own destiny to win the Big Ten West. The Badgers might not have three-year starting QB Alex Hornibrook on Saturday at Northwestern, though. Hornibrook (11/6 TD-INT) is ‘questionable’ and in concussion protocol.

-- UMass QB Andrew Ford has been downgraded to ‘doubtful’ at UConn due to a leg injury. Ford, who has thrown for 1,340 yards with a 9/5 TD-INT ratio, had a 22/4 TD-INT ratio last season.

The Triple Option: College football Week 9 picks and predictions
                              Andrew Caley

                              Trick or treat!

Halloween may be just around the corner, but nothing has been spookier than trying to predict the college football landscape thus far. Just when you think you have a feel for a team or a grip on a situation, the world goes all Evil Dead on us.

The latest example being Ohio State getting stomped 49-20 last week as 12.5-point favorites at Purdue. In fact, AP ranked Top 25 teams that are laying double-digit points are just 43-62 against the spread this season. That’s a cash rate of just 41 percent. Heck, even 11 of those ranked double-digit faves have lost outright.

This Saturday there are five more Top 25 teams who enter their matchups as double-digit faves: Utah is -10.5 at UCLA, Clemson is -17 at Florida State, Oklahoma is -24.5 hosting Kansas State, Washington is -11.5 at Cal and Notre Dame is a 24-point fave on a pseudo-neutral site against Navy. (The game is being played in San Diego, Navy will essentially be playing in front of a home crowd).

You might think being on the road would make it tougher on the ranked double-digit fave, but that hasn’t been the case. Ranked double-digit faves are 9-10 ATS on the road, while going just 33-50 ATS at home (1-2 ATS neutral sites). So that means a team like Washington shouldn’t scare us like so many Halloween jump scares.

While the Huskies have been a trick for bettors most of the season going just 2-6 ATS, they may provide a bit of a treat this week when they visit the Golden Bears.

Despite its College Football Playoff chances likely dashed thanks to an overtime loss at Oregon, Washington bounced back nicely in what was a massive letdown spot. While Washington (-17.5) didn’t cover last week against a good Colorado team, it put on a solid performance without top back Myles Gaskin and won by two touchdowns.

Gaskin is expected back this week and should terrorize a Cal run defense that is surrendering over 150 yards per game. The defense continues to be great and while Jake Browning has played to the level that was probably expected, he has been more solid lately.

While the CFP may be out of reach for the Huskies, the Pac-12 title certainly is not. But going 3-0 before a season ending Apple Cup is a must and it starts this week at Cal. The Huskies takes care of business versus an inferior Bears team.

                              Pick:
                              Washington -11.5

Kentucky Wildcats at Missouri Tigers (-7, 56.5)

The Kentucky Wildcats have been one of the best treats of the college football season.

It all started with the Wildcats first win against rival Florida in over three decades and now a few weeks later they sit at 6-1 straight up and 4-1 in conference play. That’s good for a share of first place in the SEC West. That’s right. The Kentucky Wildcats are in first place. In not basketball! And what does that get Kentucky? (Cue Rodney Dangerfield) No respect, that’s what. It is currently a 7-point road underdog for this weekend’s matchup against the 4-3 Missouri Tigers.

Missouri is 0-3 in conference play and has a defense that currently ranks 123 of 129 Division I teams against the pass allowing 287.4 yards per game and rank 92nd in points allowed surrendering over 30 per game.

Now maybe Mizzu is getting a touchdown because Kentucky doesn’t match up overly well with them. Kentucky is about as old school as a football team can get these days. They run the football and play great defense.

The Wildcats run game is headed by dark horse Heisman candidate Benny Snell Jr. The junior running back has rumbled for 893 yards at a clip of 5.6 yards per attempt and has nine touchdowns.

Meanwhile, Kentucky’s defense ranks 12th in the nation in total yards allowed and points allowed. They have a tough matchup with Mizzu quarterback Drew Lock, but if the Wildcats can control the clock they’ll have a great opportunity to not only cover but keep their SEC East title hopes alive with a win.

We like our chances of there not being a razor blade in this candy bar.

                              Pick:
                              Kentucky +7

Washington State Cougars at Stanford Cardinal (-3, 53.5)

Another treat this season was seeing College Gameday finally arrive to Pullman, giving Old Crimson a home appearance for Washington State. The trick? The Cougars are probably the Pac-12’s last hope when it comes to getting a team in the College Football Playoff.

Washington State is 6-1 and has two quality wins after last week’s beatdown of the Oregon Ducks, but they are still lacking a signature road win. Well, that can change this week when they visit Stanford. The Cardinal bounced back with a win over Arizona State last week following back-to-back losses against Notre Dame and Utah.

While Stanford’s has been a little tougher, Washington State is getting a little disrespected here. This is a great matchup for Gardner “The Moustache” Minshew. The senior transfer from East Carolina is torching the Pac-12. Minshew is completing nearly 70 percent of his passes for 2,745 yards with 23 touchdowns compared to just six interceptions. He gets to go up against a Stanford defense that ranks 80th in the nation total yards and 100th against the pass.

This also aren’t looking pretty for the Cardinal on offense. Their once Heisman frontrunner, Bryce Love, is questionable once again with an ankle injury for a team that is averaging just 3.1 yards per carry. And quarterback K.J. Costello is expected to play after getting his throwing hand accidentally stepped on last week. They face a surprisingly stout Cougars defense that ranks 18th in total yards.

This line has to be a trick because Washington State should win this outright.

                              Pick:
                              Washington State +3

                              Last week: 1-2
                              Season to date: 13-11
