CFL Betting Notes - Week 15
    David Schwab

In a shortened Week 14 schedule in the CFL, British Columbia climbed out of last place in the West Division with an important 32-14 victory against Montreal on Friday as a three-point road favorite.

Saturday’s doubleheader of betting action north of the border started with Calgary rolling over Hamilton 43-28 as a slight 2 ½-point favorite on the road. Later that night, Ottawa regained first place in the East Division with a 30-25 upset against Saskatchewan as a five-point underdog on the road.

    Friday, Sept. 21

Montreal Alouettes (3-9 SU, 6-6 ATS) at Winnipeg Blue Bombers (5-7 SU, 5-6-1 ATS)

    Point-spread: Winnipeg -10
    Total: 52

    Game Overview

The Alouettes’ brief two-game straight-up winning streak came to an end on Friday with the loss to British Columbia. This was the first time they failed to cover against the spread in their last five contests. Antonio Pipkin continued to get the call at quarterback, but struggled to complete just 50 percent of his 22 passing attempts for a total of 95 yards passing while also tossing four interceptions. The only bright spot in that game was his 69 yards rushing on nine carries.

Winnipeg comes of its bye week with a four-game losing streak both SU and ATS. In the first meeting this season against Montreal, the Blue Bombers cruised to a 56-10 victory as three-point favorites on the road. They are 3-2-1 ATS in six previous home games this season and 4-3-1 ATS when closing as a favorite. The total has gone OVER the closing line in six of their last seven games.

    Betting Trends

-- Montreal has a 3-1-1 edge ATS in its last five road games against the Blue Bombers and the total has stayed UNDER in four of the last six meetings in Winnipeg.

    Saturday, Sept. 22

Edmonton Eskimos (7-5 SU, 6-6 ATS) at Ottawa RedBlacks (7-5 SU, 5-7 ATS)

    Point-spread: Edmonton -3
    Total: 54

    Game Overview

The Eskimos are three games off the pace in the West Division title race. They went into last week’s bye following a crucial 48-42 upset against Calgary as two-point home underdogs to keep the Stampeders within striking distance in this race. Edmonton has been able to cover in its last three outings and the total has stayed UNDER in two of those three games. It is just 2-4 SU on the road this season with an even 3-3 record ATS.

Ottawa has been on a roller-coaster ride for most of the season, but its SU 7-5 record is good enough to set the pace in the East. The inconsistent play of quarterback Trevor Harris is part of the reason for the up and down play overall, but he was on against the Roughriders on Saturday with 334 yards passing and two scoring strikes. The RedBlacks got a big effort from William Powell running the ball with 148 yards rushing on 18 carries.

    Betting Trends

-- Edmonton has gone 4-2 both SU and ATS in its last six road games against the RedBlacks with the total staying UNDER in five of those six matchups.

Saskatchewan Roughriders (7-5 SU, 7-5 ATS) at Toronto Argonauts (3-8 SU, 4-7 ATS)
    Point-spread: Saskatchewan -3
    Total: 51

    Game Overview

The Roughriders remain in the thick of the playoff race in the West despite Saturday’s loss. This was their first defeat either SU or ATS in their last five games. The total went OVER 50 ½ points against Ottawa and it has gone OVER in four of their previous five outings. Zack Collaros got banged up in a Week 13 victory over Winnipeg, but he was back under center on Saturday night. He completed just 10-of-27 throws for 162 yards and one touchdown against two interceptions.

The Argonauts went into last week’s bye with a three-game losing streak both SU and ATS. They started the season with a 27-19 road loss to Saskatchewan as 2 ½-point favorites. The total stayed UNDER 49 ½ points in that Week 1 loss, but it has gone OVER in five of Toronto’s last seven games. It is 2-1 (SU and ATS) in its last three home games as part of an even 3-3 SU record at home this season.

    Betting Trends

-- Toronto has failed to cover in five of its last seven home games against the Roughriders and it is 1-4 (SU and ATS) in its last five games against Saskatchewan overall. The total has stayed UNDER in four of the last six meetings.

Hamilton Tiger-Cats (6-6 SU, 5-6-1 ATS) at British Columbia Lions (5-6 AU, 7-4 ATS)
    Point-spread: OFF
    Total: OFF

    Game Overview

The Tiger-Cats’ three-game SU winning streak came to an end with the loss to Calgary and the total has now gone OVER in their last three games after going OVER 51 ½ points against the Stampeders. Jeramiah Masoli did not have one of his best days passing the ball with zero touchdown throws against two interceptions. He remains the second-leading passer in the CFL with 3,786 yards in 12 games. He has 16 touchdown passes on the year with 13 interceptions.

BC continues to battle it way into playoff contention with a pair of victories (SU and ATS) in its last two games. The total stayed UNDER 48 ½ points in Friday’s win in Montreal and it has stayed UNDER or ended as a PUSH in the Lions’ last six games. The bad news from Friday’s win was quarterback Travis Lulay’s separated shoulder. Jonathon Jennings took his place under center and he completed 19-of-30 passing attempts for 180 yards and one touchdown throw.

    Betting Trends

-- BC has won four of its last five games against the Tiger-Cats both SU and ATS with the total going OVER in seven of the last 10 games between the two. This will be the first meeting this season as part of an upcoming home-and-home series.
