NCAAF opening line report: College football opening lines on the move early

“Not only did the house need the Trojans against Cal this past Saturday, but 69 percent of the early bettors are on Washington State this week, quickly moving the Cougars from +6 to +4.5."

Conference play is in full swing for Week 5 of the college football season. We check in on the opening lines and early action for a few noteworthy matchups, with insights from Dave Mason, brand manager for offshore sportsbook BetOnline.ag.

No. 5 Southern California Trojans at No. 18 Washington State Cougars (+6)

Two unbeatens in the Pac-12 kick off the weekend a day early, with a 10:30 p.m. ET Friday night clash. Southern Cal is 4-0 SU, but hasn’t been particularly impressive in getting there, save for its solid win over Stanford in Week 2. In Week 4, the Trojans (1-3 ATS) traveled to California, where they trailed early and were still tied at 13 in the fourth quarter before pulling away for a 30-20 victory as a 16.5-point favorite.

Washington State (4-0 SU, 2-2 ATS) has put up 45 points or more in three of four games. The Cougars rumbled over Nevada 45-7 as a hefty 28.5-point chalk this past Saturday.

“With a 1-3 record against the spread, the public seems to be fading USC,” Mason said. “Not only did the house need the Trojans against Cal this past Saturday, but 69 percent of the early bettors are on Washington State this week, quickly moving the Cougars from +6 to +4.5. Within the first few hours after the openers hit the board, there were more bets on Washington State than any other team.”

No. 2 Clemson Tigers at No. 13 Virginia Tech Hokies (+7)

The Atlantic Coast Conference will also have a pair of perfect teams in prime time, for an 8 p.m. ET Saturday night contest. Defending national champion Clemson kept right on rolling in Week 4, routing Boston College 34-7 but falling short as a 33.5-point fave, the first pointspread setback of the year for the Tigers (4-0 SU, 3-1 ATS).

Clemson already has big wins over Auburn and Louisville, in Weeks 2 and 3 respectively.

VaTech sports the same 4-0 SU, 3-1 ATS record, steamrolling three lightweights over the past three weeks after a solid opening neutral-site win over West Virginia. The Hokies dumped Old Dominion 38-0 laying 28.5 points in Week 4.

“With this top-20 matchup going down under the nationally televised prime-time lights, it’s safe to say this game will get more volume than any other game on the college football betting board,” Mason said. “A few respected bettors took the 7 real quick, moving the Hokies to +6.5. However, it’s looking like we will be Tech fans Saturday night, as 62 percent of early bettors are backing Clemson.”

No. 19 Mississippi State Bulldogs at No. 16 Auburn Tigers (-9)

Mississippi State was the upstart of the first three weeks, which included a stunning home blowout of Louisiana State in Week 3. But the Bulldogs (3-1 SU and ATS) got a reality check Saturday at Georgia, where they were dealt a 31-3 bashing as a 2.5-point pup.

Auburn (3-1 SU, 1-2-1 ATS) seemed to get back in gear this past weekend, blasting Missouri 51-14 giving 18.5 points on the road. That win came after a very lackluster 24-10 win over Mercer as a massive 40-point favorite, a game that was perhaps a hangover from the Tigers’ 14-6 loss at Clemson as a 6-point ‘dog in Week 2.

“A month into the season, Auburn finally covered their first game of the season this past weekend, while Mississippi State failed to cover for the first time,” Mason said. “Early bettors are pretty split in this SEC showdown, with 58 percent of the public on the Tigers.”

The Bulldogs and Tigers kick off at 6 p.m. ET Saturday.

No. 7 Oklahoma State at Texas Tech (+14.5)

Much like Mississippi State, Oklahoma State also got a huge dose of reality in Week 4. The Cowboys (3-1 SU and ATS) were averaging 54 points per game, but fell way short of that in a 44-31 upset loss as a 9-point home chalk against Texas Christian.

Texas Tech is out of the gate 3-0 SU and ATS, and in Week 4 hit the road for the first time, with great success. The Red Raiders went to Houston as a 7-point underdog and left with a 27-24 outright victory.

“Both teams have been generous to bettors this season,” Mason said. “Oklahoma State’s lone noncover was against TCU, which was the biggest college football winner of the weekend for BetOnline. After opening as 14.5-point dogs, Texas Tech immediately got bet down to +11.5.”

It’s another prime-time matchup, at 8 p.m. ET Saturday.

Sharps have flagged these games as lines to keep an eye on for Week 5:

Indiana (+17) at Penn State

The Hoosiers have bounced back nicely since losing their season opener versus Ohio State, in which Indiana led in the third quarter before falling apart down the stretch. Since that game, the Hoosiers have won at Virginia 34-17, and beat Georgia Southern 52-17 in a game that saw Indiana rack up 282 yards on the ground. The win at UVA is becoming more impressive after Virginia's win at Boise State last Friday night.

Penn State is in a potential letdown spot with this lone home game against Indiana sandwiched between bigger road tilts at Iowa and Northwestern. The Nittany Lions expended a lot of energy in their narrow 21-19 win over the Hawkeyes last week and could struggle to find motivation this week, especially after going 3-0 SU against Indiana the past three years.

Coastal Carolina (+11) at UL Monroe

Coastal Carolina is looking for their second win of the season as they travel to Louisiana Monroe. It's been a long week for the Chanticleers after getting blasted by Western Illinois this past Saturday. Coastal Carolina was competitive in their other two games this season, winning 38-28 versus Massachusetts and losing 23-30 at UAB. The Chanticleers want to grind out victories with their rushing attack that is averaging 239 yards per game on the ground and 5.5 yards per carry this year (versus opponents that allow just 176 yards and 4.5 ypr).

This week is probably a letdown spot for the Warhawks after a huge 56-50 overtime victory on the road against rival Louisiana Lafayette. UL Monroe is getting gashed on the ground this year, allowing 278 rushing yards per game on 6.2 yards per carry (versus opponents that average just 5.1 ypr). The Warhawks are only 3-13 SU the past two seasons and they have just three straight-up victories the last three seasons against teams with a losing record.

Total to watch:

Oklahoma State at Texas Tech (81)

This may seem like a high total, but for good reason as these two teams combined for 89 points (45-44) last season and 123 points (70-53) two years ago. Oklahoma State was "held" to just 31 points which was their lowest offensive output of the season last week versus TCU. The Cowboys are still averaging 48.2 points and 580 total yards per game on 8.1 yards per play this year (versus opponents that allow just 6.8 yppl). OSU has gone Over the total in 14 of their last 19 games as a favorite.

Texas Tech's offense has put up over 50 points twice at home already this season. They have thrown the ball at least 35 times or more in all three contests, while averaging 10.1 yards per pass this season (versus opponents that allow 8.9 ypp). The Red Raiders have gone Over the total in eight of their last 10 games against a winning opponent. This week's matchup presents a good opportunity for the nation to get to know quarterback Nic Shimonek.

Miami Hurricanes at Duke Blue Devils (+5.5, 57)

Miami 3rd-down rate vs. Duke's 3rd-down defense

The Hurricanes have done plenty well on offense through their first two games, but would love to improve on a so-so showing on third downs - and that quest will be a challenging one this weekend, with the Blue Devils limiting drive extensions better than any team in Division I.

As great as things went in last week's 52-30 romp over Toledo, they could have gone even better had Miami not settled for a 3-for-9 performance on 3rd downs. It was a significant step down from the 4-of-8 showing the Hurricanes posted in their season-opening win over Bethune-Cookman.

That said, the four teams that have faced the Blue Devils this season will tell you just how tough it has been to make headway on third down.

Duke has allowed teams to avoid fourth down just seven times in 50 third-down attempts - a 14-percent success rate that ranks No. 1 in the nation. The Blue Devils were at their stingy best in their conference opener last week, holding North Carolina to a 3-for-16 success rate on third down in a 27-17 win over the Tar Heels.

Suffice to say that Miami has its work cut out for it.

Georgia Bulldogs at Tennessee Volunteers (+7, 47)

Georgia's red-zone rampage vs. Tennessee's wretched RZ rate

Two teams headed in opposite directions meet this weekend at Neyland Stadium as the Georgia Bulldogs look to remain perfect against the Tennessee Volunteers.

Georgia posted one of the most impressive victories in all of Division I last weekend, dominating on both ends of the football in a 31-3 drubbing of then-No. 17 Mississippi State. Tennessee suffered a stunning 17-13 loss to UMass - and could be in for a long afternoon if it can't figure out a way to keep Georgia out of the red zone.

Only 17 Division I teams have converted every one of their red-zone visits into points so far this season - and the Bulldogs are one of them, having gone a perfect 13-for-13 through their first four games. Ten of those trips have resulted in touchdowns, including seven on the ground.

Of course, having RB Nick Chubb in the fold has helped, as Chubb's six rushing scores are tied for the most in the SEC. Georgia has the seventh-most red-zone visits of any team still perfect so far.

Look for that success to continue this weekend against a Volunteers team that has struggled to keep teams off the scoreboard once they get inside the Tennessee 20-yard line. The Volunteers rank outside the top 100 nationally in red-zone defense (90.9 percent), allowing 10 scores on 11 opponents visits - including seven touchdowns.

If the Bulldogs can get into the Tennessee red zone with regularity, look for Chubb and the rest of the Georgia offense to feast.

Clemson Tigers at Virginia Tech Hokies (+5.5, 51.5)

Clemson's turnover troubles vs. Virginia Tech's dynamic defense

You would be hard-pressed to find a defensive category in which the Clemson Tigers don't rank among the Division I leaders as they enter this week's highly touted matchup with Virginia Tech.

Clemson is allowing fewer than 10 points per game through its first four contests, has surrendered just four touchdowns, and limiting foes to 134.5 passing yards per game. But there's one area where the Tigers have struggled - and it's one where the Hokies own a sizeable edge.

Clemson owns a minus-2 turnover differential and ranks 110th in the nation in takeaways at 0.8 per game.

The Hokies have had no such issues with turnovers, combining a sensational offense (40.0 points per game, 27th in Division I) with an active defense that has forced three fumbles and four interceptions over the first four weeks of the season.

Only Duke, Syracuse and Pittsburgh have forced more turnovers among ACC teams, and combined with great ball security on the offensive end, Virginia Tech boasts a plus-5 turnover margin to date. If the Hokies can win the turnover battle Saturday, they could stun the visitors.

Washington State doesn’t get on national TV a lot; this is a big deal for them, just another day on the beach for USC, which scored 37 pts/game in its 4-0 start, winning first road game 30-20 at Cal LW. Teams didn’t play last two years; Trojans won last five visits to Pullman (4-1 vs spread) but did lost at home to Wazzu in 2013. Coogs are 4-0 this year but have’t been on road yet; they were down 31-10 with 9:00 to play vs Boise State, somehow won that game. Wazzu is 5-7 as a home underdog under Leach. Southern California Trojans at Washington State Cougars (+4.5, 62.5)

USC and Washington State will meet for the first time since 2014 when the No. 16 Cougars host the No. 5 Trojans in a Pac-12 showdown on Friday night. Washington State has won its first four games for the first time since opening the 2001 season with seven straight wins, and USC has won 13 consecutive games, its longest streak since winning 34 in a row from 2003-05.

The Cougars will be playing their fifth straight home game to open the season for the first time in program history, and they've scored at least 31 points in their first four wins. USC hasn't had an easy time in any of its first four victories, but the Trojans are a lot better off than last season, when they opened 1-3, including 0-2 in the Pac-12 after losses to Stanford and Utah. That was the stretch when Sam Darnold took over as starting quarterback and he's gone 13-1 in that role, though he hasn't been as sharp as many expected this season. His completion percentage (67.2) is nearly identical to last season, but he has been intercepted seven times in four games, compared to eight times in 10 games as a starter last season.

LINE HISTORY: USC opened as 5.5-point road favorites and by Thursday night that number was bet down to 4.5. The total hit betting boards at 64.5 and is down two full points to 62.5.

Southern California Trojans at Washington State Cougars (+4.5, 62.5)

USC and Washington State will meet for the first time since 2014 when the No. 16 Cougars host the No. 5 Trojans in a Pac-12 showdown on Friday night. Washington State has won its first four games for the first time since opening the 2001 season with seven straight wins, and USC has won 13 consecutive games, its longest streak since winning 34 in a row from 2003-05.

The Cougars will be playing their fifth straight home game to open the season for the first time in program history, and they've scored at least 31 points in their first four wins. USC hasn't had an easy time in any of its first four victories, but the Trojans are a lot better off than last season, when they opened 1-3, including 0-2 in the Pac-12 after losses to Stanford and Utah. That was the stretch when Sam Darnold took over as starting quarterback and he's gone 13-1 in that role, though he hasn't been as sharp as many expected this season. His completion percentage (67.2) is nearly identical to last season, but he has been intercepted seven times in four games, compared to eight times in 10 games as a starter last season.

Michigan State won three of last four games with Iowa; underdogs are 6-2 vs spread in last eight series games. Hawkeyes won 19-16/15-13 in last two visits to East Lansing, but ran ball for only 52-23 yards in last two games vs MSU. Spartans are -6 in turnovers this year; since 2012, they’re 14-20 as a home favorite, but 2-0 this season. Iowa was outgained 579-273 in LW’s 21-19 loss to Penn State, when PSU scored winning TD in last 0:10. Hawkeyes are 5-3 in last eight games as a road dog- they won only road game 44-41 in OT at Iowa State.

Florida State is 0-2 for first time since 1989; they’ve got a true freshman QB who was 22-39/278 passing in his first college start, a 27-21 loss to NC State, but he also fumbled on 2-yard line. Seminoles won last five games with Wake Forest, though Deacons covered last two meetings- this is lowest series spread since 2009. Wake Forest is 4-0 after a 20-19 win at Appalachian State, when ASU threw for 372 yards; Deacons are 7-4 as a home underdog under Clawson. FSU is 6-6 as a road favorite the last three years- they’re 11-13 as an ACC road favorite under Fisher.

Navy beat Tulsa 44-21/42-40 last two years, running ball for 460-390 yards; underdogs are 3-1 vs spread in last four series games. Middies are 3-0 this season, scoring 35.7 ppg; they ran the ball for 569 yards LW, but have completed only 9-25 passes in three games- past couple Navy teams threw the ball better. Tulsa lost last two games 54-51/16-13; they’ve allowed average of 294.5 rushing yards/game, bad news when facing Navy. Golden Hurricane is 1-5 as a home underdog the last 2+ years. Tulsa allowed 596 yards, 42 points in the one game they won!!!

Colorado gave up 254 rushing yards in 37-10 (+11) home loss to Washington LW; Buffs now head out on road for first time- they’re 7-2 vs spread in last nine games as home underdogs. Colorado (-13) beat UCLA 20-10 LY, snapping 5-game skid vs Bruins; Buffaloes lost last three visits to Pasadena, by 4-22-39 points. Underdogs covered last four series games. UCLA has already allowed 44+ points in three games; they allowed 48-58 points in losing last two weeks, at Memphis/Stanford- they were down 44-10 in one of their wins, vs Texas A&M.

South Carolina needed a great catch by a WR to nudge La Tech 17-16 on late FG LW; they’re 3-1 now, and are 4-7 vs spread as a road underdog last 2+ years, winning SU at Mizzou in first true road game this year. Texas A&M scored 44+ points in three of its four games, but blew 44-10 lead in loss at UCLA- they’re 3-0 since then. Aggies are 3-0 vs South Carolina in SEC play, but Gameecocks covered last two meetings, losing by 11-7 points. Aggies ran ball for 321-216 yards in last two meetings. SEC home teams are 3-5 vs spread in conference games.

Florida snuck by its last two games, beating Tennessee/Kentucky right at end; Gators still have a lot of players suspended with off-field issues. Florida is 19-1 in its last 20 games vs Vanderbilt, winning last three by 24-2-7 points; underdogs are 5-1 vs spread in last six series games. Gators won their last 10 visits to Nashville, covering four of last five. Florida is 9-17 in last 26 games as a home favorite. Vandy got pounded 59-0 LW by Alabama; first downs in game were 38-3. Last 5+ years, Commodores are 14-9 vs spread as a home favorite.

Tennessee (-27) snuck by UMass 17-13 last week, after losing to Florida on last play the week before; the natives are restless. Vols outgained UMass by only 38 yards (319-281); they’re 4-2 vs spread as home dogs under Jones. Georgia is 4-0 wth a 20-19 win at Notre Dame; Dawgs have a freshman QB, which is often dicey on road. Georgia is 12-9 in last 21 games as a road favorite, 2-1 under Smart. Tennessee beat Georgia 34-31/38-31 last two years, after Dawgs had gone 11-4 in previous 15 series games. Georgia won two of last three visits to Knoxville.

LSU/Georgia/Auburn is tough gauntlet for Mississippi State team that got smoked between the hedges LW, after pounding LSU 37-7 at home. MSU is 3-2 in its last five games with Auburn; Tigers ran ball for 220.3 ypg in last three meetings- underdogs covered three of last four. State is 9-4 in last 13 games as a road underdog, 0-1 this year; they threw for only 103 yards LW at Georgia. Hard to tell much about Auburn; they beat three stiffs but were outgained 281-117 in a 14-6 loss at Clemson, their only decent opponent so far. Tigers are 6-13 in last 19 games as a home favorite.

North Carolina scored 44.7 ppg in winning last three games with Georgia Tech by 5-7-28 points; UNC gained 636 yards in LY’s game, 353 in the air. Tech ran ball for 300+ yards in 8 of last 9 series games. Tar Heels are 1-3 this year with home losses to Cal/Duke; they gave up 312 yards on ground at Louisville. Tech has already run ball for 535-436 yards this year in games vs Tennessee (L41-42), Pitt (W35-17); since 2012, Yellow Jackets are 19-13-1 as home favorites. Under Fedora, Carolina is 15-8-1 vs spread when coming off a loss.

Underdogs covered five of last six Clemson-Virginia Tech games; Tigers (-10.5) beat Tech 42-35 in LY’s meeting, first series game since 2012. Clemson lost two of last three trips to Blacksburg, with last visit here in 2011. 4-0 Clemson won its only road game 47-21 at Louisville couple of weeks ago, outgaining Cardinals 613-433; over last 3+ years, Tigers are 5-9 when laying points on road. Hokies are 4-0 with a neutral field win over West Virginia their only decent win; over last decade, Tech is 4-3 vs spread when getting points at home.

Dogs covered four of last five Air Force-New Mexico games; Lobos won last two, 45-40/47-35. New Mexico ran ball for 367+ yards in last five series games. Falcons lost last two visits here, by 47-35/45-37 scores. Air Force lost last two games, to Michigan/San Diego State; they were blanking Aztecs 9-0 in a monsoon LW until lightning delayed game and Aztecs threw ball well after delay when rain stopped. Lobos are 11-17 vs spread in last 28 home games; underdogs covered all three of their lined games this year.

Oklahoma State won/covered first three games this year, then TCU came to Stillwater and beat Cowboys 44-31 LW; Cowboys are 5-8-1 vs spread in last 14 games as a road favorite. Texas Tech scored 79 points in wins over ASU/Houston last two games; Red Raiders are 5-4 as home underdogs under Kingsbury. OSU won its last eight games with Tech; road teams covered last four, as Cowboys scored 55.5 ppg in winning/covering their last four visits to Lubbock. This game got bet down from 13.5 to 9.5; total is 82 or 83. Losing side scored 34+ in last four series games.

Memphis is 3-0 despite giving up 29 points to UL-Monroe, 31 to I-AA So Illinois; UCLA threw for 463 yards in 48-45 Memphis win two weeks ago. This is Tigers’ first road game; they’re 5-2-1 in last eight games as a road underdog. Central Florida scored 99 points in winning its first two games; they crushed Maryland LW, but Terps were down to their #3 QB. Knights are 4-1 as a home favorite under coach Frost. UCF won its last nine games with Memphis; teams haven’t met since 2013. Tigers are 0-4 vs spread in last four trips to Orlando, last of which was in 2011.

(17) South Florida Bulls at East Carolina Pirates (+21, 75)

* The Bulls have scored 30 or more points in 21 consecutive games, the fourth-longest streak all-time. USF & Alabama are the only two teams in Division I to rank in top 10 in rushing yards and rushing defense.

* The Pirates rank dead last in Division I in scoring defense (48 points per game), total defense (624.8 yards per game) and pass efficiency against (192.2). Redshirt senior Thomas Sirk ranks eighth among active QBs in rushing touchdowns (16).

LINE HISTORY: The Bulls opened this matchup as about a 24-point road favorite at most books, but despite a 4-0 SU record they haven't been a good bet this season and bettors have faded them down to -21. The total opened at a sky high 74 and bettors hammered the Over, moving the number as high as 80.5, before coming back down to the current number of 75.

Clemson Tigers at Virginia Tech Hokies (+7, 50.5)

Defending national champion Clemson has passed a few early tests already but will face their biggest one yet on Saturday. The second-ranked Tigers put their school-record 11-game road winning streak on the line when they visit No. 12 Virginia Tech in an ACC showdown between unbeaten teams.

Virginia Tech coach Justin Fuente knows his team’s margin for error is next to nothing against the Tigers, who are explosive on offense and dominant on defense.

"It's like defusing a bomb,” Fuente told reporters. “Like one small snip of the wire that's incorrect and, 'Boom!' You blow your hands off. That's how talented and how good they are."

Clemson already has beaten two ranked opponents, holding off Auburn in a defensive struggle and routing Louisville on the road, and pulled away in the fourth quarter of a 34-7 win over Boston College last week. The Hokies survived a tough test in a 31-24 win over West Virginia to open the season but have coasted past inferior competition over the last three weeks.

TV: 8:00 p.m. ET, ABC.

The offense has been remarkably consistent as well, considering all Clemson lost at the skill positions. Quarterback Kelly Bryant has been terrific, passing for 873 yards with two touchdowns and three interceptions while rushing for 268 yards and seven scores, and freshman running back Travis Etienne (292 yards, four TDs) averages 12.7 yards per carry.

ABOUT VIRGINIA TECH (4-0 SU, 3-1 ATS, 1-2-1 O/U): The Hokies have long been regarded for their stellar defense and special-teams work, but they’re putting up huge offensive numbers so far this season. Redshirt freshman quarterback Josh Jackson has been superb, completing 65.2 percent of his passes for 1,127 yards with 11 touchdowns and one interception, albeit against weak competition. Jackson has a tremendous weapon in receiver Cam Phillips, who has recorded 34 receptions for 523 yards and five touchdowns through four contests.

Saturday's NCAAF Week 5 action report: Bettors riding with road faves, but action is light

September closes out with a college football Saturday, highlighted by a prime-time showdown in the Atlantic Coast Conference. We check in on the action with Will Bernanke, lead analyst for CG Analytics in Las Vegas, and Nick Bogdanovich, director of trading for William Hill US, which operates more than 100 sportsbooks throughout Nevada.

No. 2 Clemson Tigers at No. 12 Virginia Tech Hokies – Open: +7.5; Move: +7; Move: +7.5

Defending national champion Clemson has won nine in a row SU (6-3 ATS) dating to last season. The Tigers (4-0 SU, 3-1 ATS) had a lot of trouble with Boston College in Week 4, in a game tied at 7 through three quarters, but Dabo Swinney’s troops racked up four fourth-quarter touchdowns to win 34-7 as a 33.5-point home favorite.

Virginia Tech is also out of the gate 4-0 SU and 3-1 ATS, though this will mark its toughest game by far, having previously faced West Virginia, Delaware, East Carolina and Old Dominion. In Week 4 against ODU, the Hokies breezed to a 38-0 victory as a 28.5-point chalk.

“Virginia Tech, we’re getting three times more money on account, so the sharp money is on Virginia Tech,” Bernanke said of action on this 8 p.m. ET kickoff. “But over the counter, we’re seeing all public money on Clemson. This game’s gonna a be a big test for Virginia Tech, to see if they’re for real, and Clemson, they’ve become everyone’s darlings since winning the national championship. They’re one of our top five public teams now.”

The line opened Clemson -7.5 at CG Technology books, including The Cosmopolitan and the Venetian on the Vegas Strip. That sharp VaTech action forced a cup of coffee at 7 on Wednesday before the line quickly returned to 7.5.

“This line I anticipate gets to 8 the day of game,” Bernanke said of expectations for today at CG Technology books, including The Cosmopolitan and Venetian on the Vegas Strip. “We’ll see an influx of public money on Clemson.”

William Hill opened the Tigers -7 and has been at 7.5 since Wednesday on lower-than-anticipated action.

“We’re a little high on Clemson money, but very disappointing handle on this game right now. It’s very light,” Bogdanovich said.

No. 8 Georgia Bulldogs at Tennessee Volunteers – Open: +7.5: Move: +7; Move: +7.5; Move: +8; Move: +8.5

Georgia turned what was expected to be an early SEC showdown into a blowout victory last week. The Bulldogs (4-0 SU, 3-1 ATS) gave almost nothing to previously unbeaten upstart Mississippi State in a 31-3 victory as a 2.5-point home fave.

Tennessee (3-1 SU, 1-3 ATS) barely escaped what would have been a hugely embarrassing loss in Week 4. The Volunteers held on for an uninspired 17-13 win over Massachusetts as a heavy 28-point home chalk.

“Tennessee last week looked terrible,” said Bernanke, who then alluded to the line on this game when it was first put up months ago as one of CG’s Games of the Year. “The look-ahead line on this game was Tennessee -1, if you can believe it. Right now, we’re getting all Georgia money across the board. We can’t get a Tennessee ticket right now. Oklahoma State Cowboys at Texas Tech Red Raiders – Open: +8.5; Move: +9; Move: +10; Move: +9.5; Move: +10

Oklahoma State was another early season darling, particularly with public bettors, but the bottom fell out in Week 4. The Cowboys (3-1 SU and ATS) laid an egg at home against a top-20 Texas Christian unit, losing 44-31 giving 9 points.

Texas Tech (3-0 SU and ATS) is coming off an upset road victory. The Red Raiders topped Houston 27-24 as a 7-point underdog and will be an even larger pup for this Big 12 showdown.

“Again, very little betting so far,” Bogdanovich lamented of action for this 8 p.m. ET kickoff. “We’re just a little high on Oklahoma State. I think there’s a little sharp money there, but disappointing handle on this game, to say the least.”

CG opened the Pokes -8.5 and got as high as 11 before falling back to 10.5 on Friday.

“We’re seeing all sharp money and public money on Oklahoma State,” said Bernanke, who was more intrigued by the total of 84, the highest this year in college football. “Right now, all I’ve seen is over money.”

No. 24 Mississippi State Bulldogs at No. 15 Auburn Tigers – Open: -9.5; Move: -10; Move: -9.5; Move: -9; Move: -8.5

Last week, Auburn (3-1 SU, 1-2-1 ATS) won and cashed in the same game for the first time this season, and in quite convincing fashion. The Tigers boatraced Missouri 51-14 laying 18.5 points on the road.

Meanwhile, Mississippi State (3-1 SU and ATS) got the aforementioned reality check at Georgia, losing 31-3 as a 2.5-point ‘dog. Yet this line has been ticking down since topping out at Auburn -10 on Tuesday, with kickoff set for 6 p.m. ET.

“There’s been some sharp money for Mississippi State, but no great shakes,” Bogdanovich said. “It’s just very light handle all around this week. I don’t know why. I guess all the bettors got broke last week.”

Perhaps last Sunday’s NFL action played a part, as underdogs went 11-5 ATS and the sportsbooks had a field day.

Iowa Hawkeyes at Michigan State Spartans – Open: -3.5; Move: -3; Move: -4.5; Move: -4

Iowa had an outstanding chance to pull an upset over Penn State, scoring a touchdown inside the final two minutes to take a 19-15 lead at home last week. But the Hawkeyes (3-1 SU, 2-2 ATS) couldn’t make it hold up, losing on a touchdown on the last play of the game, 21-19 as a 13-point underdog.

Michigan State (2-1 SU and ATS) was dealt its first setback of the season in Week 4, tumbling to Notre Dame 38-18 catching 3 points at home.

“Pretty good two-way action so far, and I think it’ll continue to be pretty good two-way,” Bogdanovich said of activity for this 4 p.m. ET start. “Iowa played pretty good last week.”

Other games seeing notable movement/action:

• South Florida at East Carolina: ECU’s three losses came by a combined score of 154-51, and even in the Pirates’ lone win last week, they allowed 38 points to Connecticut in a 41-38 road win getting 5 points. Yet they’re seeing some money against No. 17 South Florida, moving the line from 24 to 21 for this noon ET start. “Just some sharp money for the ‘dog. So good luck with that,” Bogdanovich joked.

• Navy at Tulsa: The Midshipmen opened -4.5 and were bet up to 7.5 in a 3:30 p.m. ET contest. “That’s sharp money on Navy. Tulsa had a pitiful performance against New Mexico.” Indeed, the Golden Hurricane were 10-point home favorites and lost outright, 16-13.

• Colorado at UCLA: The Bruins have gone from -6.5 to -7.5. “Early money was probably sharp money. They laid the 6.5 and the 7.” It’s a late kickoff, at 10:30 p.m. ET.

• Central Michigan at Boston College: The Eagles are up to 10.5-point chalk, after opening at 7.5 at William Hill books for this 1 p.m. ET meeting. “That’s definitely sharp money for Boston College.”

• San Jose State at UNLV: The Rebels opened -12 at William Hill and now find themselves 14-point faves for this 10:30 p.m. matchup. “I’m assuming it’s sharp money. They laid 12 and 13. We’re high on the Rebels.”
