  • Essential Week 3 betting tidbits and odds for NFL Sunday

Baltimore Ravens at Jacksonville Jaguars (+3.5, 39.5)

This is the fifth consecutive year the Jags will be playing a “home” game in London. Jacksonville has played more games in London than any other NFL franchise and it is considering building a training facility near Wembley Stadium in London.

The Jags are 2-2 straight up and against the spread in their four previous games in London but are 2-0 SU and ATS in the last two years. This will be the Ravens' first game in London.

LINE HISTORY: The Ravens opened up as large as 4.5-point chalk but are now giving 3.5 points at just about all sportsbooks. The total has been bet down from 40 to 39.

    TRENDS:

*The Under is 5-0-1 in the last six meetings between these two clubs.
*The Jags are 4-1 ATS in their last five games overall.

Denver Broncos at Buffalo Bills (+3, 40)

Buffalo finished with the best running attack in the league in 2016 and were off to a good start after Week 1. But last week the Bills rushed for 69 yards on 23 carries against the Carolina Panthers. All 69 of those yards came after first contact too, according to ESPN Stats and Info. Not a great showing for the Bills O-line.

The Broncos own the third best running defense and are fresh off holding Dallas Cowboys running back Ezekiel Elliott to eight yards on nine carries.

LINE HISTORY: This line opened as low as Broncos -1.5 but most shops now have the Bills getting a full field goal. The total is holding steady at 40 points.

    TRENDS:

*The Broncos are 7-0-1 ATS in their last eight games in September.
*The Bills are 1-5 ATS in their last six games against teams with winning records.

New Orleans Saints at Carolina Panthers (-5.5, 46.5)

Sam Bradford won the NFC offensive player of the week award in Week 1 and Tom Brady won the AFC version in Week 2. Both players’ award-winning performances came against New Orleans.

The Saints own the worst defense in the NFL and could be without two of their top three cornerbacks (Marshon Lattimore and Sterling Moore) against the Panthers.

LINE HISTORY: The total opened as high as 49 offshore but is now down to 46.5 pretty much across the board. The Panthers opened as 6.5-point faves but the number has dropped to 6 and 5.5.

    TRENDS:

*The Saints are 9-2 ATS in their last 11 road games and 4-0 ATS in their last four games against Carolina.
    * The Under is 5-0-1 in the Panthers’ last six games overall.

Pittsburgh Steelers at Chicago Bears (+7, 44)

The Chicago Bears could have some key players back in their lineup in Week 3. Guard Kyle Long is the team’s best offensive lineman but he’s been out of action since late last season with an ankle injury. He’s been cleared to play by the club’s medical team and could start against the Steelers.

Cornerback Prince Amukamara is expected to make his Bears debut this weekend as is former Steelers wideout Markus Wheaton.

LINE HISTORY: The books opened with the Steelers as 7.5 to 8-point chalk. A few offshore shops have moved it down to the key number (Pitt -7). The total opened as high as 46 and can be found as low as 44 entering the weekend.

    TRENDS:

*The Steelers are 8-3-1 ATS in their last 12 games overall.
*The Bears are 1-8 ATS in their last nine games in September.

Atlanta Falcons at Detroit Lions (+3, 50.5)

If you like the Lions to win this game outright, you might want to consider placing a bet on Matthew Stafford to win NFL MVP right now. Multiple offshore books, including Sportsbook.com, lowered Stafford’s MVP odds to 5/1 behind only Aaron Rodgers and Tom Brady.

Bet365.com and a few other shops still have Stafford in the 40/1 range but that price won’t remain if the Lions improve to 3-0.

LINE HISTORY: Some shops opened with the Falcons laying 3.5 points but every sportsbook is now at the field goal spread. The total has been bet up from 49 to 50.5.

    TRENDS:

*The Lions are 0-4 ATS in their last four games against teams with winning records.
*The Under is 10-3 in Detroit’s last 13 games overall.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers at Minnesota Vikings (-1.5, 41)

Sam Bradford is practicing but bettors won’t know if the former Heisman winner will start for the Vikings until the hours before kickoff on Sunday. Case Keenum will get the start under center for a second straight week if Bradford’s knee doesn’t cooperate.

Keenum won and covered the spread against the Bucs in 2016 and 2015 as the starting quarterback for the Los Angeles Rams.

LINE HISTORY: Most books are still waiting to hear definitively on Bradford before releasing their odds. SportsInteraction.com opened with the visiting Bucs getting 1.5 points and the line moved up to Bucs +2 only a few hours later.

    TRENDS:

*The Under is 6-1-1 in Tampa’s last eight games overall.
*The Bucs are 6-1 ATS in their last seven games against the Vikings.

Cleveland Browns at Indianapolis Colts (+1.5, 41)

The Browns are in the unusual position of being the betting favorite in an NFL game. It ends a 21-game underdog streak for the franchise. Cleveland hasn’t been chalk since Week 14 of the 2015 campaign when it won and covered as a 2.5-point fave against the 49ers.

Dating back to Week 12 of the 2013 season, the Browns are 2-7-1 ATS in games they were favored.

LINE HISTORY: Just about all shops opened at Colts +1 and that’s when the line still stands heading into the weekend. The total remains around the opening number of 40.5.

    TRENDS:

*The Browns are 6-21-1 ATS in their last 28 games.
*The Under is 6-0 in the Colts’ last six home games.

Miami Dolphins at New York Jets (+6, 43)

Miami is in the middle of its season from hell in terms of travel itinerary.

The Dolphins’ Week 1 home game against the Bucs was postponed to their bye week because of Hurricane Irma. They practiced in California before playing the Rams in Los Angeles then returned to Miami and will fly out to New York this weekend. After the game, they’ll prep for their trip to London to “host” the Saints at Wembley.

That’s a lot of air miles racked up over a few weeks.

LINE HISTORY: This game opened at Jets +6 and that’s where the line still sits. The total has been bet up from 41 to 43.

    TRENDS:

*The road team is 14-6-1 ATS in the last 21 games between this two sides.
*The Dolphins are 5-2 ATS in their last seven road games.

Houston Texans at New England Patriots (-14, 44)

Texans QB Deshaun Watson is trying to become the first rookie to beat the Patriots at home since Bill Belichick came in 2000. First-year signal callers are 0-8 SU and 2-6 ATS playing at Foxoborough with a collective five TD passes against 16 interceptions and a 50.7 passer rating.

Houston has been outscored 88-22 in its three games against the Patriots under head coach Bill O’Brien. New England won and covered in all of those games.

LINE HISTORY: Bookmakers might have underestimated the public’s support behind the Patriots. New England opened as a 12.5-point fave and is now giving 14 points at most shops. The total has been bet up from 43.5 to 44.5.

    TRENDS:

*The Texans are 1-6-1 ATS in their last eight games against the Pats and 0-5 in their last five trips to New England.

Seattle Seahawks at Tennessee Titans (-2.5, 42.5)

The Seahawks are one of the biggest early season disappointments for bettors – which explains the why they’re getting 2.5 points on the road against Tennessee. The Seahawks scored just one touchdown, they’re 26th in 1st downs per game (16.5) and they’re 29th in yards per play at 4.2.

LINE HISTORY: Most books opened with the Titans giving two points and the line is up to Titans -2.5. The total can be found around 42.5.

    TRENDS:

*Seattle is 0-5 ATS in its last five away games.
*The Titans are 7-22-2 ATS in their last 31 home games.

New York Giants at Philadelphia Eagles (-6, 42.5)

Things are deteriorating quickly for the Giants. The two people at the top of the team’s totem pole – QB Eli Manning and head coach Ben McAdoo – don’t seem to be on the same page, and both are the two people chiefly responsible for an ineffective offense.

McAdoo really dressed down Manning after Monday night’s home loss to the Detroit Lions.

The G-Men haven’t scored more than one offensive touchdown since Week 15 of last season.

LINE HISTORY: The Wynn and Westgate opened Eagles -4.5 and -3.5 respectively. Both books adjusted quickly to early action on the Eagles and bumped the line up to 5.5. The total is staying steady between 42.5 and 43.

    TRENDS:

*The Giants are 1-5 ATS in their last six games against the Eagles.
*The Under is 6-1 in the last seven meetings between these two sides at Philly.

Kansas City Chiefs at Los Angeles Chargers (+3, 47.5)

The books are letting you take the Chargers are +3 but you might as well as not bet them unless you think they can best the Chiefs by nine points or more. You see, the Bolts stink in close games.

The Chargers are 4-18 SU in one-score games since the start of the 2015 campaign. Their new kicker isn’t helping matters. Youngshoe Koo has missed three of his four field goal attempts this season including the potential game-winning kick against the Dolphins last week.

LINE HISTORY: Some shops opened at 2.5 but just about all locations list the Chiefs as 3-point chalk. The total is sitting at 47.5.

    TRENDS:

*The Chiefs are 7-0 in their last seven road games.
*The Chargers are 0-6-1 ATS in their last seven games overall.

Cincinnati Bengals at Green Bay Packers (-9, 46.5)

The Bengals did the only thing you can do when your team hasn’t found paydirt after two full games. They fired their offensive coordinator.

Will new OC Bill Lazor make a difference? Well, in his only two years as an offensive coordinator in the NFL, he led a middle of the pack offense in 2014 with the Dolphins and then got dumped after the offense dipped drastically the following year.

LINE HISTORY: The Packers opened as 9-point favorites and have been bet up to -9.5. The total is holding at 45 points.

Oakland Raiders at Washington Redskins (+3, 54.5)

There are a lot of positive changes going on for the Oakland Raiders and fewer whistles from the zebras is a big one. The Raiders are averaging seven penalties per game this season. Last season they had a league-high 9.1 penalties per game and they were the third worst in 2015 at 8.7 penalties against per game.

Might not sound like a huge difference but two fewer whistles can mean the difference between a scoring drive and a punt.

LINE HISTORY: There are already some shops offering 3.5 points a half point higher than the opening field goal spread. Bettors should expect the line to grow as more action comes in on the Raiders leading up to kick off.

    TRENDS:

*The Raiders are 10-3 ATS in their last 13 road games.
*The Redskins are 6-1 ATS in their last seven games against winning teams.

      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sunday Night Football Betting Preview and Odds: Oakland at Washington
      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Oakland Raiders at Washington Redskins (+3, 55)

An injury to Derek Carr toward the end of last season KO'd Oakland's title aspirations but the quarterback's return has the Raiders looking like a serious Super Bowl contender. Carr and Oakland will try to remain unbeaten under the glare of a national spotlight when they travel cross country to visit the Washington Redskins on Sunday.

Carr will make his 50th NFL start and has a chance to reach the .500 mark with a victory -- no small feat for a player who began his career with 10 consecutive defeats. "Whenever you start 0-10, it usually doesn't end well, but I'm glad that we're trending in the right direction," said Carr, who is 14-3 in his last 17 starts. "That first year, as we all know, was rough for everybody. To be able to win some more games since that day, it's a good thing." Washington laid an egg in its season opener, a 30-17 loss at home to Philadelphia, but averted an 0-2 start by scoring late in a 27-20 win at the Los Angeles Rams a week ago. “Oh, we’re excited," Redskins coach Jay Gruden said of facing Oakland. "I think losing our opener -- home opener against Philadelphia -- hurt a little bit and we’re excited to get our next home game. We know it’s going to be a great test.

      TV:
      8:30 p.m. ET, NBC.

      POWER RANKINGS:
      Raiders (-3.5) - Redskins (0) + home field (-3) = Raiders +0.5

      LINE HISTORY:
The Raiders opened the week as 3.5-point road favorites but quickly dropped to 3 Monday morning and remained there all week. The total hit the betting boards at 53 and has been all the way up to 55.

      WHAT SHARPS SAY:
This is a rare Sunday night home game for the Redskins on primetime national TV, so the crowd will be excited. However, the Raiders actually caught a scheduling break here. An early 1 pm ET (10 am PT) start time would have been tougher for Oakland, especially since they traveled to Tennessee in Week 1, back to Oakland last week, and now completely across the country for Week 3. - ‘Steve Merril’.

      INJURY REPORT:

Raiders - CB Sean Smith (Probable, Neck), CB Gareon Conley (Probable, Shin), TE Jared Cook (Probable, Shoulder), WR Amari Cooper (Probable, Knee), RB DeAndre Washington (Questionable, Hamstring), DB Keith McGill II (Questionable, Foot).

Redskins - S Deshazor Everett (Probable, Eye), RB Rob Kelley (Probable, Ribs), T Morgan Moses (Questionable, Ankle), TE Jordan Reed (Questionable, Shoulder), CB Josh Norman (Questionable, Shoulder), S Montae Nicholson (Questionable, Shoulder), LB Mason Foster (Doubtful, Shoulder), S Su’a Cravens (I-R, Knee).

      ABOUT THE RAIDERS (2-0 SU, 2-0 ATS, 1-1 O/U):
Marshawn Lynch, who came out of retirement to join his hometown team, rushed for 45 yards and a touchdown in last week's 45-20 drubbing of the New York Jets in helping Oakland pile up 180 yards on the ground. Carr, who broke his leg in Week 16 last season, tossed three scoring passes to Michael Crabtree against the Jets and has five TD passes against zero interceptions after throwing only six picks in 2016. Former No. 4 overall pick Amari Cooper is coming off consecutive 1,000-yard seasons to provide a deep threat for Carr, who has a 126.5 passing rating through two games. Defensive end Khalil Mack leads the defense -- he notched a sack last week to give him a league-best 27 since the start of 2015.

      ABOUT THE REDSKINS (1-1 SU, 1-1 ATS, 1-1 O/U):
Quarterback Kirk Cousins threw for nearly 5,000 yards last season but is off to a slow start after losing his starting wideouts in free agency and trying to establish a rapport with Terrelle Pryor. Tight end Jordan Reed and starting running back Rob Kelley are both questionable due to injuries, but third-down back Chris Thompson and rookie Samaje Perine filled in nicely for a ground game that produced 229 yards against the Rams. Washington is permitting only 77.5 yards rushing but was gashed for 307 yards through the air by second-year quarterback Carson Wentz in the season opener. Top cornerback Josh Norman injured his shoulder in the victory over the Rams and was limited in Wednesday's practice session.

      TRENDS:

      * Raiders are 6-1 ATS in their last 7 games in September.

      * Redskins are 0-4 ATS in their last 4 games following a ATS win.

      * Over is 5-1 in Raiders last 6 games following a straight up win of more than 14 points.

      * Over is 5-1 in Redskins last 6 games in September.

      * Road team is 5-0 ATS in their last 5 meetings.

      CONSENSUS:
The public is siding with the road chalk Raiders at a rate of 72 percent and the Over is picking up 59 percent of the totals action

          • Monday’s Den: Wrapping up an NFL Sunday…….

Lot of great finishes in the early NFL games Sunday; from 4:00-4:20, there were four games that came right down to the end………good drama.

            14) Falcons 30, Lions 26— Detroit appeared to score go-ahead TD with 0:08 left, but he was ruled down a foot short and because of a (bad) rule, there is an automatic 10-second run-off when a replay reversal happens on a play where the clock would’ve kept running, which cost Detroit a chance to win the game on the last play. Very poor rule.

Matt Ryan threw three picks; Falcons are first team this season (1-17) to win when going -2 or worse in turnovers.

            13) Eagles 27, Giants 24—
Rookie kicker Elliott kicked a 61-yard FG to end a wild 4th quarter; Eagles led 14-0 after three quarters- Giants had gained 206 yards on 44 plays in the first three quarters, but then scored TD’s on first three drives of 4th quarter, gaining 166 yards on only 11 plays.

New York had 14-yard edge in field position; they’re only 2nd team this year to have a 10+-yard advantage in field position but lose (2-13). Giants ran ball 17 times for 49 yards.

            12) Bears 23, Steelers 17 OT—
Chicago drove 74 yards on four plays to win the game in OT, even though they blew a 17-7 halftime and lead threw for only 84 yards.

This was an odd game; Bears blocked a FG on last play of the first half, they were going to score a TD on the runback, but the selfish jerk with the ball stopped and posed on the 1-yard line and two Steelers stripped him of the ball, which wound up costing the Bears four points.

            11) Patriots 36, Texans 33- -New England drove ball 75 yards on 8 plays, scoring GW TD with 0:23 left, saving a lot of people’s survivor pools from extinction.

Houston has to be really happy with rookie QB Watson; they averaged 8.3 yards/pass attempt, outgained Patriots 417-396, so the Texans have found themselves a quarterback.

            10) Jaguars 44, Ravens 7—
Wow. Jacksonville actually ran a fake punt when they led 37-0; would like to know the backstory there. Total no-show for Baltimore, which was +7 in turnover ratio in its two wins, but they were -3 in this game. Ravens averaged 1.8 yards/pass attempt.

            9) Colts 31, Browns 28— Two rookie QB’s started on the road this week; their teams scored 33-28 points, even if both did lose. Kizer threw three picks; Browns were -2 in turnovers; Colts averaged 9.0 yards/pass attempt. Brissett had 200+ passing yards at halftime.

            8) Jets 20, Dolphins 6—
Jets beat Miami for the 6th straight time; Dolphins didn’t score until the very last play of the game, then missed the PAT, which didn’t matter. Miami was 1-12 on third down, ran ball only 15 times for 30 yards. Jets gained 9.3 yards/pass attempt.

            7) Bills 26, Broncos 16— Buffalo had a 16-yard edge in field position; three of their 11 drives started in Denver territory, but they scored only 6 points on those drives. Denver had only one TD on three red zone drives. Impressive win for the Bills. Underdogs were 9-1 vs spread in the early games Sunday, and the Falcons (-3) were damn fortunate to cover their game.

            6) Saints 34, Panthers 13—
Carolina didn’t allow a TD in its first two games, gave up 34 points here. Panthers have scored only three TD’s on 28 drives this season; Newton threw three picks in this game, averaged only 4.2 yards/pass attempt. New Orleans started three drives in Carolina territory, won field position by 13 yards.

            5) Vikings 34, Buccaneers 17—
Backup QB Case Keenum was 25-33/369 yards, as Vikings beat a flu-ravaged Bucs’ squad. Tampa Bay ran ball only nine times for 26 yards- they had only six 3rd down plays the whole game (1-6), as Winston threw three INTs (-3). 16 of 22 NFL teams went over their individual over/unders this week; offenses are starting to catch up with defenses.

            4) Titans 33, Seahawks 27— Tennessee ran 10 plays in the third quarter for 204 yards and three TD’s, breaking open a 9-7 halftime lead. Seattle is 2-5-1 in its last eight regular season road games; Titans ran ball for 195 yards. This was 7th NFL game this year with no turnovers in it; the underdog won four of those seven games.

            3) Chiefs 24, Chargers 10— KC’s first two TD drives were 43-34 yards; Rivers threw three picks. Chiefs led 17-10 at the half, then second half was scoreless until Hunt’s 69-yard TD run ended things with 1:49 left. Bolts could just as easily be 3-0, but they scored 10 points in three red zone drives. Last two weeks it was the kicker’s fault; their QB failed them here.

            2) Packers 27, Bengals 24 OT—
Hard to believe, but Aaron Rodgers is now 1-7 in his career in OT games; that is your Stat of the Day. Bengals led this game 21-7 after a pick-6, second week in row Packers gave up a defensive TD. Green Bay tied game with 0:17 left in regulation. Bengals left it all on the field here, but now they’re 0-3.

            • NFL Today, Week 3
              September 24, 2017

              SCOREBOARD

              Monday, Sept. 25

Dallas at Arizona, 8:30 p.m. EDT. The Cardinals (1-1) have won four straight against the Cowboys. Dallas' most recent win against Arizona came Nov. 12, 2006. The Cardinals are at home after four straight on the road, two in the preseason, two in the regular season. The Cowboys (1-1) last played in Arizona on Dec. 4, 2011. The Cardinals won the game in OT, 19-13. Last week vs. Denver, the Cowboys allowed a 100-yard rusher for the first time in 17 games. 2016 NFL rushing leader Ezekiel Elliott carried nine times for 8 yards against Denver, easily his worst showing in two seasons as pro.

              - Devonta Freeman, Falcons, had 21 carries for 106 yards and a touchdown in Atlanta's 30-26 win over Detroit.

              - Dalvin Cook, Vikings, had 27 carries for 97 yards and a touchdown in Minnesota's 34-17 win over Tampa Bay.

              ---

              - Geronimo Allison, Packers, had six catches for 122 yards, including a 72-yarder in overtime, in Green Bay's 27-24 overtime win over Cincinnati.

              - Antonio Brown, Steelers, had 10 catches for 110 yards and a touchdown in Pittsburgh's 23-17 loss to Chicago.

              - Chris Thompson, Redskins, had six catches for 150 yards and a touchdown in Washington's 27-10 win over Oakland.

              ---

              Special Teams

              - Jake Elliott, Eagles, who was two of three on field goals, made a 61-yarder as time expired to give Philadelphia a 27-24 victory over the New York Giants. Elliott's 61-yard field goal is the longest by a rookie in NFL history and tied for the third-longest game-ending field goal, trailing only Tom Dempsey (63 yards, Nov. 8, 1970) and Matt Bryant (62 yards, Oct. 22, 2006).

              - Ka'imi Fairbairn, Texans, was 4 for 4 on field goals and 3 for 3 on extra points in Houston's 36-33 loss to New England.

              - Jason Myers, Jaguars, was 3 for 3 on field goals and 5 for 5 on extra points in Jacksonville's 44-7 win over Baltimore in London.

              - Matt Prater, Lions, was 4 for 4 on field goals and 2 for 2 on extra points in Detroit's 30-26 loss to Atlanta.

              - Stephen Hauschka, Bills, was 3 for 3 on field goals and 2 for 2 on extra points in Buffalo's 26-16 win over Denver.

              ---

              Defense

              - Jadeveon Clowney, Texans, two sacks and returned a fumble 22 yards for a touchdown in Houston's 36-33 loss to Atlanta. He became the third player in Texans history with two sacks and a fumble return for a touchdown in a game, joining Mario Williams and J.J. Watt. The two sacks also matched a career high for Clowney.

              - William Jackson III and Carl Lawson, Bengals. Jackson returned an interception 75 yards for a touchdown and Lawson added 2+ sacks in Cincinnati's 27-24 overtime loss to Green Bay.

              - Glover Quin, Lions, returned an interception 37 yards for a touchdown in Detroit's 30-26 loss to Atlanta.

              - Melvin Ingram, Chargers, had three sacks in San Diego's 24-10 loss to Kansas City.

              ---

              STREAKS & STATS

The Chiefs (3-0) beat the Chargers for the seventh straight time and have won 12 straight AFC West games. ... Cincinnati wide receiver A.J. Green had 10 catches for 111 yards and a touchdown in the Bengals' overtime loss at Green Bay. Green, who recorded his 500th reception and his 50th touchdown catch in his 89th game, joins Hall of Famer Marvin Harrison and Larry Fitzgerald as the only players in NFL history with at least 500 catches and 50 touchdown receptions in his first 90 games. ... The Jaguars finished with 410 yards, easily outpacing their output in their first three games, and handed the Ravens their worst defeat since Nov. 9, 1997, when they lost 37-0 at Pittsburgh. ... The Browns have lost 28 of their past 30 overall and 15 consecutive on the road. ... The Chargers have lost 26 of their past 35 games dating to the start of the 2015 season, and have lost 14 of their past 15 in the division.

              ---

              MILESTONES

Kansas City rookie running back Kareem Hunt had 183 scrimmage yards (172 rushing, 11 receiving), including a 69-yard touchdown run in the Chiefs' 24-10 win at the Los Angeles Chargers. Hunt has six touchdowns (four rushing, two receiving) in his first three games, tied with Billy Sims (1980 Detroit Lions) and Dutch Sternaman (1920 Decatur Staleys) for the most touchdowns by a player in his first three games. Hunt, who has 538 scrimmage yards through three games, surpassed Sid Blanks of the 1964 Houston Oilers (452) for the second-most scrimmage yards by a player in his first three games. Only Sims (562) has more in his first three games. ... Jaguars wide receiver Allen Hurns has scored in each of the Jaguars' past three overseas games, matched Brandon Lloyd as the only players to score three touchdowns at Wembley Stadium. ... Giants wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. had nine catches, including two touchdown receptions, in the team's loss at Philadelphia. Beckham, who has 301 receptions in 45 games, reached 300 receptions in the fewest games in NFL history, surpassing Anquan Boldin, who recorded his 300th reception in his 47th game.

              ---

              CLOSE CALL

Matthew Stafford's pass to Golden Tate was ruled to be just short of the end zone in the final seconds after a review, allowing Atlanta to beat the Lions 30-26. The call on the field was touchdown when Stafford connected with Tate on a slant from the 1 with 8 seconds left, but it was overturned because the receiver was down before the football reached the goal line. By rule, 10 seconds had to run off the clock and that ended the game because Detroit didn't have any timeouts.

              ---

              SIDELINED

Panthers wide receiver Kelvin Benjamin left with a knee injury after the first quarter of the Panthers' 34-13 loss to the New Orleans Saints. The receiver's leg got bent back awkwardly after he was dragged down from behind. Benjamin tore his ACL in the same knee two years ago. ... Seattle's Doug Baldwin left in the fourth quarter with an injured groin. The Seahawks also lost linebacker Dewey McDonald to a knee injury on the opening kickoff. ... The Eagles lost Pro Bowl defensive tackle Fletcher Cox (calf), running back Darren Sproles (wrist) and linebacker Jordan Hicks (ankle) in the first half against the Giants. New York also lost defensive end Olivier Vernon to an ankle injury and running back Orleans Darkwa to an injured back in the fourth quarter. A Buccaneers defense that was already without three starters took a few more hits, with linebacker Lavonte David lost in potentially the biggest blow. He had the back of his ankle rolled on inadvertently by a Vikings player during a scrum around the ball in the fourth quarter and left the field on a cart. ''X-rays were negative,'' coach Dirk Koetter said. ''That's the good news.'' ... Raiders wide receiver Michael Crabtree left with a chest injury in Oakland's 27-10 loss to Washington.

              ---

              SPEAKING

''I definitely know that I scored a touchdown. I definitely shot that dagger 3 like Ray Allen, and I feel like I finished that game.'' - Bears rookie running back Tarik Cohen broke off an electric run for what appeared to be a 73-yard, game-winning touchdown in overtime. But he was ruled out at the Pittsburgh 37. The Bears won the game on Jordan Howard's 19-yard touchdown run.

              ---

''Never saw one like that.'' - Detroit safety Glover Quin said after the Lions' loss when Golden Tate's touchdown in the final seconds was overturned following a review. He was ruled short of the goal line, and since he was inbounds and the Lions had no timeouts left, a 10-second runoff ended the game and the Falcons earned a 30-26 win.

                • Monday’s six-pack

6 most popular picks for Week 3 in the Westgate Super Contest:

                  6) Dallas Cowboys, -3, 577

                  5) Seattle Seahawks, +3, 586- L

                  4) New Orleans Saints, +5.5, 653- W

                  3) Kansas City Chiefs, -3, 665- W

                  2) Denver Broncos, -3, 795- L

                  1) Oakland Raiders, -3, 924- L

Season record of top 6 picks: 5-12

                  **************************

Monday’s Den: Wrapping up an NFL Sunday…….

                  13) Eagles 27, Giants 24— Rookie kicker Elliott kicked a 61-yard FG to end a wild 4th quarter; Eagles led 14-0 after three quarters- Giants had gained 206 yards on 44 plays in the first three quarters, but then scored TD’s on first three drives of 4th quarter, gaining 166 yards on only 11 plays.

New York had 14-yard edge in field position; they’re only 2nd team this year to have a 10+-yard advantage in field position but lose (2-13). Giants ran ball 17 times for 49 yards.

                  12) Bears 23, Steelers 17 OT— Chicago drove 74 yards on four plays to win the game in OT, even though they blew a 17-7 halftime and lead threw for only 84 yards.

                  10) Jaguars 44, Ravens 7— Wow.

                  8) Jets 20, Dolphins 6— Jets beat Miami for the 6th straight time; Dolphins didn’t score until the very last play of the game, then missed the PAT, which didn’t matter.

                  6) Saints 34, Panthers 13— Carolina didn’t allow a TD in its first two games, gave up 34 points here. Panthers have scored only three TD’s on 28 drives this season; Newton threw three picks in this game, averaged only 4.2 yards/pass attempt. New Orleans started three drives in Carolina territory, won field position by 13 yards.

                  5) Vikings 34, Buccaneers 17— Backup QB Case Keenum was 25-33/369 yards, as Vikings beat a flu-ravaged Bucs’ squad.

                  2) Packers 27, Bengals 24 OT— Hard to believe, but Aaron Rodgers is now 1-7 in his career in OT games; that is your Stat of the Day. Bengals led this game 21-7 after a pick-6, second week in row Packers gave up a defensive TD. Green Bay tied game with 0:17 left in regulation. Bengals left it all on the field here, but now they’re 0-3.

                  • MNF - Cowboys at Cardinals
                    September 24, 2017

                    LAST WEEK

The Cowboys (1-1 SU, 1-1 ATS) did not look like the team that finished with the best record in the NFC in 2016 as Dallas was routed at Denver, 42-17 as 2 ½-point favorites. Following a Dak Prescott touchdown pass to Dez Bryant to even the score at 7-7, the Broncos outscored the Cowboys, 28-3 to put the game out of reach. Prescott finished with 238 yards passing, two touchdowns, and two interceptions, but running back Ezekiel Elliott was limited to a career-low eight yards on nine carries. To put that number in perspective, Elliott’s previous career-low was 51 yards, which came in his NFL debut against the Giants last season.

The Cardinals (1-1 SU, 0-2 ATS) were on the verge of an 0-2 start after falling behind at Indianapolis, 10-0. However, Arizona rallied back to even the game at 13-13 on 40-yard field goal from Phil Dawson late in the fourth quarter. Dawson would connect on the game-winning kick in overtime to give the Cardinals a 16-13 road triumph, although Arizona failed to cash as 6 ½-point favorites. Carson Palmer overcame a three-interception performance in the season-opening loss at Detroit to rack up 332 yards through the air against the Colts to avoid Arizona’s first 0-2 start since 2005.

                    HIGHWAY HICCUPS

Dallas began the Prescott era last season by winning its first six games away from AT&T Stadium. The Cowboys lost their final two road games last season (which included a Week 17 defeat at Philadelphia with their starters not playing), while dropping their third straight away contest at Denver last week. Rewinding to the start of 2016, the Cowboys own a 3-2 SU and 2-3 ATS mark in the role of a road favorite, even though two of those victories last season came at San Francisco and Cleveland.

                    DESERT DOGS

Arizona is receiving points at University of Phoenix Stadium for the first time since Week 16 in 2014 in a 35-6 setback to Seattle as nine-point ‘dogs. That season, the Cardinals compiled a solid 4-1 SU/ATS record in the home ‘dog role, although two of those victories came as a short one-point underdog. Since 2015, the Cardinals have been listed as a home favorite 17 times, but have covered the number only six times. Last season, Arizona put together a 3-5 ATS record, but the Cardinals have won each of their past seven home openers since 2010.

                    SERIES HISTORY

The Cardinals have owned the Cowboys over the years by winning each of the last four meetings since 2008. Two of those victories came in overtime (2008 and 2011) in Glendale, while Arizona beat Dallas at AT&T Stadium in the most recent matchup in 2014 by a 28-17 count. The Cardinals erased an early 10-0 deficit as Palmer tossed three touchdown passes, as Arizona outscored Dallas in the final three quarters, 28-7. The last time Dallas beat Arizona came in 2006 as 6 ½-point road favorites, 27-10 as Matt Leinart was the Cardinals’ quarterback that day.

                    TOTAL NOTES

The Cowboys closed out 2016 by cashing the UNDER in six of their final seven road games prior to eclipsing the OVER in their away opener at Denver. The Cardinals hit plenty of UNDERS at University of Phoenix Stadium last season, going 6-2, while 10 of the past 12 home contests since November 2015 have finished UNDER the total.

                    UNDER THE LIGHTS

During Jason Garrett’s tenure, the Cowboys own a 3-2 SU and 2-3 ATS in Monday night action, including a 42-21 blowout of the Lions in Week 16 last season. The Cardinals have won all three Monday games since Bruce Arians took over as head coach in 2014, but all came in the favorite role at home.

                    HANDICAPPER’S CORNER

VegasInsider.com expert Joe Nelson feels if though it’s early in the season, a loss can be devastating moving forward, “The Cowboys and Cardinals entered the season considered two of the top NFC contenders, but one team will leave Week 3 at just 1-2. Both teams have favorable Week 4 matchups at home, but in what figures to be a tightly contested NFC playoff picture, a .500 first quarter will leave a lot of work to do and both teams have difficult Week 5 games ahead.”

From the defensive side, the Cardinals will have their work cut out for them, “Arizona’s defense was statistically one of the better units in the league last season, but so far this season, the Cardinals have allowed 24 points per game, featuring decent numbers against the run but struggling to contain the pass, mostly thanks to Matthew Stafford’s big second half in Week 1. Arizona has committed five turnovers this season while only producing two defensively, though last week’s overtime interception was effectively a game-winner.”

On the Cowboys’ end, Prescott could be feeling the heat of his second season according to Nelson, “Prescott threw two interceptions last week after having only four in his entire rookie season as so far the concerns about a sophomore regression are proving valid with a huge decline in his production through two weeks. The Cowboys expected to be without Elliott for the first several weeks of the season but his presence hasn’t provided great returns so far with modest rushing totals on just 3.4 yards per carry and no touchdowns as the offense may have a difficult time matching last season’s success.”

From a trend standpoint, Vince Akins notes a fade spot for Dallas, “The Cowboys are 0-10 ATS (-7.05 ppg) since 2010 as a favorite after playing as a road favorite last game.” To be fair, Dallas won six of those games straight-up, but went 0-2 ATS in this situation last season, including a 10-7 loss to the Giants.

                    BOOKMAKER’S TAKE

Scott Cooley of BookMaker.eu says to keep an eye on the Cardinals in their home opener, “The public is fully supporting Dallas, per usual, but we've taken some smart money on the home dog, which is why we've adjusted down a half point. It's tough to say where the big money will come when limits are elevated though. Unless the sharps really get involved with Arizona, we will need the Cards in a big way because the squares think this line is a gift from God.”

NFL Week 3 MNF Betting Preview

                      Dallas Cowboys vs Arizona Cardinals

Coming into the 2017 campaign there were a lot of handicappers extremely high on both of these teams and figured this Week 3 matchup could be a playoff preview. We are still a long ways away from talking about playoffs, but Dallas and Arizona have failed to live up to those expectations so far.

Yes, both teams are 1-1 straight up entering Week 3, but getting blown out in Denver last week was not a good look for the Cowboys, and Arizona narrowly escaped an Andrew Luck-less Indianapolis Colts team a week ago.

Both sides would love to bounce back with a strong game from start to finish here, and for the Cowboys, they are looking to beat the Cardinals for the first time in five tries.

BetOnline.ag Odds: Dallas (-3); Total set at 47

Arizona doesn't need a “bounce back” in the general sense as they did win a week ago, but putting up 16 points on a Colts team that was torched by the Rams in Week 1 was not a good look. To be fair, it was the first time Arizona's offense had to truly adapt to a missing piece as life without RB David Johnson officially began, and for the most part the Cardinals relied on their aerial attack downfield to get the job done.

QB Carson Palmer threw for 332 yards on just 19 completions (19-for-36), and the running game was used more as something to keep the defense honest. That style of play might bode well for them here as they just saw Denver's Trevor Siemian throw for 4 TD's against the Cowboys a week ago, and if that rushing attack from the Cardinals can break a big run or two to keep the Cowboys off-balance, Arizona has a chance to showcase that explosive offense everyone expected from them this season.

Dallas catches a bit of a break offensively too as they aren't going to see the same style of suffocating defense this week as they did from Denver a week ago. The Cowboys love to use the running game to set up the pass, and when Denver completely took away RB Ezekiel Elliott last week, the Cowboys were like a ship without a sail. Arizona's rush defense numbers look a whole lot better then they actually are because they've yet to face a running team (Detroit, Indianapolis) and this MNF game could be a rude awakening for that rush defense.

Dallas should find significant success with Elliott this week, and as we saw last year, when he gets rolling and moving the chains, the entire Cowboys offense is tough to stop.

So rather than try to pick a side here in a game I truly believe could end up going either way, I'm looking at this total and believe it's probably a point or two too low. The current number of 47 is juiced (-115) to the 'under' thanks to 70%+ action on the low side according to VegasInsider.com, and a lot of that has to do with what we've seen from these two teams through two weeks.

Dallas has yet to score 20 points in a game, and everyone remembers Arizona needing a 4th quarter comeback to knock off the Colts in OT a week ago. However, this is one of those primetime spots where I believe both offenses show up and try to establish their dominance, not only for this game, but for the rest of the year for both organizations.

Dallas is built to win with their phenomenal offensive line either blocking for Elliott and the running game, or protecting QB Dak Prescott as he stretches the field through the air.

The Cowboys are on a 7-2 O/U run when coming off a game that saw them give up 40+ points, and the last seven times they've been the road team on MNF they've gone 5-1-1 O/U.

The Cowboys will hit 20+ points for the first time this year rather easily in my opinion here, and they'll force an Arizona offense that they know is without their best weapon to try and keep up.

Arizona is glad to have that first game without David Johnson out of the way, and thankfully it came against a Colts team that is missing their best player as well. But with this being the Cardinals home opener, I expect that comfortable surroundings to help calm this offense down from the start and get the correct calls in without having to worry about noise for the first time in 2017.

The passing attack that they showed a week ago should excel even more here against a weak Dallas secondary, and with Arizona posting a 7-0 O/U run in their last seven conference games, don't be surprised to see the 70%+ of bettors who've already bet the 'under' rip up their tickets by the time the 4th quarter starts.

                        • Books dominate Week 3
                          September 25, 2017

Sorry bettors, I hate to say it because I'm always rooting for you, but y'all had no chance in Week 3 of NFL action. The burial started early with a 6:30 am PT start time in London when the Jaguars (+3) won 44-7 over the Ravens and it continued on through the morning as underdogs would go 9-1 ATS with seven of them winning outright. It was one of the largest Sunday regular season wins the Las Vegas sports books have ever seen.

"If the Redskins get there for us it will be on of the top-three regular season days I've ever seen," said MGM Resorts race and sports VP Jay Rood. "I had only one red mark on sheet for the day which I rarely ever see."

The game Rood's books lost on in the early games was surprisingly the Saints (+6) at Carolina. That's it. Almost everything the majority of betters keyed on Sunday ended up a loser. And the books also got some larger favorites to lose outright.

"We almost had a 13-point favorite go down," said Westgate SuperBook VP Jay Kornegay of the Patriots come-from-behind, 36-33 win against the Texans. "It was a really solid weekend. We got the 5-6-and-7-point favorite to lose outright, something we desperately needed but didn't get last week. Parity in the NFL is big for us. Last week we had teams hold true to form, week 1 was a mixed bag of results and so was week 3."

The biggest bet game of the day at William Hill's 108 sports books across the state was Denver (-3.5) at Buffalo taking 16 percent of Sunday's action. Denver had 82 percent of the tickets written on them after abusing Dallas the week before, but it was Denver's first road game and the Bills held serve with a 26-16 win.

"The day got started well for us when the Broncos lost at Buffalo," said Stratosphere oddsmaker Hugh Citron. "That was the big game for us, and you could just feel the air let out of the room when Buffalo got the win."

Next up on William Hill's list of risk was the Raiders visiting Washington with 11 percent of the wagers, and of course the popular Raiders had 91 percent of the tickets written on them. Washington jumped out to a 21-0 lead and won 27-10. They yardage favoring Washington, 472-128, shows how one sided the game really was.

"We needed the Redskins for a big decision,' said Station Casinos sports book director Jason McCormick. "The Bears win was big big killing money-line parlays and teasers. The Bills were also a huge win. Falcons was our worst game, but overall it was a big day and if Redskins get the upset it'll be a monster day."

Who knows what a monster day is, but let's just call it at least seven figures for each of the major sports book chains. The books almost got the clean sweep of favorites failing to cover early when the Lions appeared to pull out the last second win, but an official review negated a Lions TD and Atlanta (-3) held on for a 30-26 win.

The Steelers' 23-17 overtime loss at Chicago (+7) was also a shocker just because Pittsburgh was pegged as a team to dethrone the Patriots in the AFC. They looked lost and sluggish throughout the game while the Bears were playing with some serious intensity. William Hill had 79 percent of all tickets written on the game taking the Steelers.

"The Steelers loss was huge and set the tone for us because it knocked out teasers and big money-line parlays," said Rood. "Those guys that beat us up last week with the big money-line parlays took it on the chin this week."

Sunday's big win for the house was continuation from a solid Saturday of college football action.

"We had a nice two days back-to-back which has been a rarity lately," Rood said. "We didn't have a lot of winning Saturday's last season, so to have one followed up by a great Sunday was nice to see."

Just like Sunday's key games for the house that knocked out parlays, Saturday had one as well.

"The game that stood out the most just because of setting the tone on the day was Oklahoma State (-11) losing to TCU," said Rood. "We had some late sharp play on TCU, but overall, it had a huge impact just because of parlay risk extending throughout the day."

                            K.C. Sunshine

-- The Kansas City Chiefs started out hot early in Sunday's game with the Los Angeles Chargers, winning and covering for the third time in as many outings this season. The Chiefs have been getting amazing production from RB Kareem Hunt, who is the first rookie to roll for 100 or more yards from scrimmage in his first three NFL games since Matt Forte accomplished the feat in 2008 with the Chicago Bears. The defense has been getting better, too, allowing just 10 points Sunday after 27 in Week 1, and 20 in Week 2. The 'under' result on Sunday was the first of the season after going 0-1-1 through the first two contest.

                            Buffalo Brothers

-- The Buffalo Bills used another strong defensive effort in Week 3, topping the Denver Broncos by a 26-16 score. The Bills have allowed just two touchdowns and eight field goals through three games, and they're a perfect 3-0 ATS on the season. The 'over' result in Sunday's game was the first after two 'under' results. Next up is a trip to face the unbeaten Atlanta Falcons in their brand new palace. The Falcons have covered two in a row after narrowly missing a cover in Week 1. The Falcons won a controversial game on the road against the Detroit Lions on a stop at the goal line.
                            Total Recall

-- Sunday Night Football was a low-scoring affair, as the 'over' was never threatened in Oakland-Washington (53.5). In fact, Raiders QB Derek Carr didn't even eclipse 100 passing yards until garbage time in the fourth quarter. It was a stark contrast to the barn burner between L.A. Rams-San Francisco (40) on Thursday night, as the teams combined to double the total.

-- Three games -- Baltimore-Jacksonville (38.5), Denver-Buffalo (39.5) and the L.A.-San Francisco (40) game had totals with a line of 40 or lower, and all three of those games cashed 'over', In fact, the Jaguars hit the over by themselves, as the 'over' is now 10-3 in the past 13 games played in the United Kingdom. Tampa Bay-Minnesota (41), Seattle-Tennessee (41.5) and Cleveland-Indianapolis (42) were the next three lowest totals on the board, and they all hit the 'over', too.

-- The Miami Dolphins and Ravens apparently didn't get the memo, as Week 3 was supposed to be a high-scoring weekend. Baltimore scored just seven overseas, while the Dolphins turned in the lowest total, six points, in a shocking loss to the New York Jets. The Dolphins have started a big sluggish after having their Week 1 game canceled due to Hurricane Irma, averaging just 12.5 PPG on offense while the defense has given up 18.5 PPG.

-- The 'over/under' is 5-5 through the first 10 primetime games of the 2017 season with Monday's total still pending. Officially, the 'over' finished 27-24 (52.9%) through 51 games under the lights in 2016. In 2015, the over finished 20-28-1 (41.7%) in 49 primetime games. In 2014, the over went 33-17 (66%) in primetime games, and the over was 28-22 (56%) in 2013.

                            Injury Report

-- Buccaneers LB Lavonte David (ankle) was carted off in Minnesota due to a left ankle injury. X-rays were negative, but reports say he was on crutches after the game.

-- Eagles RB Darren Sproles (arm) suffered a broken arm in Sunday's victory againts the Giants and he will have an MRI on Monday to determine the severity of the injury. He might be headed for the Reserve/Injured list as a result.

-- Jets RB Matt Forte (toe) exited Sunday's game against the Dolphins early due to a toe ailment.

-- Panthers WR Kelvin Benjamin (knee) left Sunday's game against the Saints due to a knee injury, but early reports indicate he escaped major injury.

-- Raiders WR Michael Crabtree (chest) was forced out of the Sunday Night battle against the Redskins after taking a hard shot to the sternum.

-- Seahawks WR Doug Baldwin (groin) was forced out of Sunday's game in Tennessee after suffering a strained groin.

                            Looking Ahead

-- The Bears meet the Packers at Lambeau Field on Thursday night. While Chicago is 5-0 ATS over their past five against teams with a winning record, they're just 2-7 ATS in their past nine road games and 1-5 ATS in their past six appearances on a Thursday. Chicago is also 3-10 ATS in their past 13 meetings with the Packers, while the favorite is 10-3 ATS across the past 13 in this series.

-- The Ravens will host the Steelers, as both teams look to rebound after Week 3 losses. Baltimore is 10-1 ATS in their past 11 against AFC North teams, and 5-1 ATS in their past six at home. Pittsburgh is 0-4-1 ATS in the past five meetings in this series, although the underdog is 4-0-1 ATS during the span. The 'under' is also 3-1-1 in the past five meetings.

-- The Bengals look to stay hot against the number on the road when they meet the Browns. Cincinnati is 12-5 ATS in their past 17 on the road, including a cover at Green Bay in Week 3. The Browns are 2-8 ATS in their past 10 at home, 5-15-1 ATS in their past 21 against AFC foes and 3-12-1 ATS across the past 16 inside the division. Cincinnati has covered five straight in the series, the favorite is 4-0 ATS in the past four and the under has hit in each of the past four meeting at First Energy Stadium.

-- The Titans won and covered for the second straight game in Week 3, and they look to make it four in a row against the Texans in Houston. The Titans are just 4-21-3 ATS in their past 28 against teams with a losing overall record. TheTexans are 8-3-1 ATS in their past 12 inside the division, but just 1-4 ATS across their past five at home. The favorite has hit in six straight in this series, and the over is 5-1 in the past six meetings in Houston.

-- The Lions look to rebound at U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis against the Vikings. The Lions hope to change their luck at a new venue, as they're just 3-7-2 ATS in their past 12 visits to the Twin Cities. The under is 4-0 in the past four meetings in Minneapolis, and 6-1 over the past seven overall in the series.

-- After a horrific performance in D.C., the Raiders look to rebound against the Broncos in Denver in Week 4. The road team is 12-5-1 ATS in the past 18 in this series, but the favorite is 8-1-1 ATS in the past 10 overall between the AFC West rivals. The Raiders are also just 2-8-1 ATS in the past 11 in this series, and 1-3-1 ATS in the past five trips to the Mile High City.

                              September 25, 2017

BOSTON (AP) New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady is at odds with President Donald Trump on the issue of player protests of the national anthem, calling Trump's comments ''just divisive.''

Brady tells Boston's WEEI-FM that he ''certainly'' disagrees with Trump's comment that NFL owners should fire any player who refuses to stand for the anthem.

Patriots locked arms with some teammates during the ''Star Spangled Banner'' on Sunday against the Texans while other players kneeled.

Brady has called Trump a ''good friend'' in the past and one of Trump's ''Make America Great Again'' hats was spotted in Brady's locker in 2015. Trump has often praised the quarterback on social media.

Brady skipped a White House visit with Trump in April when the team celebrated its fifth Super Bowl title.

                              • Falcons clip Lions in controversial ending
                                September 24, 2017

DETROIT (AP) The Atlanta Falcons escaped Detroit, holding on for a win thanks in part to an NFL rule that went in their favor.

Matthew Stafford's pass to Golden Tate was ruled to be just short of the end zone in the final seconds after a review, allowing Atlanta to beat the Lions 30-26 on Sunday.

''Had the call on the field been correct initially, the clock would have run out,'' FOX analyst Dean Blandino, an ex-NFL officiating chief, explained in a tweet: ''That's the spirit of the rule.''

Lions coach Jim Caldwell agreed that the call was made correctly and the rule was applied properly. He added, though, that Stafford could have taken another snap if the call on the field was made correctly initially that Tate was down inside the 1.

''Certainly,'' Caldwell said. ''We practice it all the time.''

Cornerback Desmond Trufant, who extended Detroit's last drive with two penalties, was unaware of the rule that proved to be favorable for the Falcons.

''I thought we were going to have to play another down,'' Trufant acknowledged.

The defending NFC champion Falcons (3-0) overcame Matt Ryan's three interceptions and many other mistakes.

Trufant was called for pass interference in the end zone on a third-and-10 from the Atlanta 19, giving the Lions a first down at the 1 with 19 seconds left. Trufant was flagged for holding on a second-and-30 from the Falcons 38 earlier in the drive, allowing Detroit pick up a first down.

Detroit (2-1) never led in the game, and failed to pull off another comeback in the fourth quarter.

''I wish I could've gotten us in,'' Stafford said. ''It's kind of what I do, and didn't get it done.''

                                END OF A STREAK

Ryan hadn't thrown an interception in nine games, including three games during the last postseason, before getting picked off three times at Ford Field. Safety Glover Quin stepped in front of one pass and returned it 37 yards for a score in the second quarter, cutting Atlanta's lead to 17-13. His other two interceptions were deflected, one through Mohamed Sanu's hands. Ryan finished 24 of 35 for 294 yards with a tiebreaking, 40-yard TD pass to Taylor Gabriel early in the fourth on a screen and a 4-yard strike to Sanu early in the game.

Devonta Freeman scored on a 1-yard run to put Atlanta up 17-3 in the second quarter and finished with 106 yards rushing - 35 more than Detroit's entire team had on the ground.

                                BY THE NUMBERS

Stafford was 25 of 45, missing some targets and having Eric Ebron drop two, for 264 yards and an 11-yard TD pass to Tate in the third quarter that cut Atlanta's lead to 23-20. Ameer Abdullah had 14 carries for 47 yards after running for 86 yards Monday night in a win over the New York Giants. Detroit's Darius Slay picked off two deflected passes, matching his total number of interceptions in each of the previous three seasons.

                                TAKING A KNEE

Detroiter Rico Lavelle, who sang the anthem, added a new layer to pregame protests around the league. Just before finishing the song and belting out ''brave,'' Lavelle went down on his right knee, bowed his head and raised his right fist wrapped around the microphone. Eight Lions and two Falcons also took a knee on the sideline as owners for both teams locked arms with players and coaches.

                                INJURIES

Falcons: Atlanta was without three starters: defensive end Vic Beasley (hamstring), defensive end Courtney Upshaw (knee/ankle) and Ryan Schraeder (concussion). The Falcons appeared to miss Schraeder in particular because his replacement, Ty Sambrailo, gave up two sacks in the first half.

Lions: Detroit was also missing a trio of first-string players: linebacker Jarrad Davis (concussion), safety Tavon Wilson (shoulder) and center Travis Swanson (ankle). Lions defensive end Anthony Zettel left the game with an injured right knee, but was able to return.
