  • Saturday's 4-Pack Of CFB Plays

Had a nice 3-1 showing last week. Let's get the sweep this week.

    Northwestern vs Michigan State

The Northwestern Wildcats will rumble with the struggling Michigan State Spartans at Spartan Stadium in East Lansing, Michigan. The Wildcats come in at 1-1 in the Big 10 and are off a 38-21 win at Iowa, while the Spartans are 0-2 in the conference and are off a non-league home loss to BYU by a score of 31-14. Last year, the Spartans took this game by a score of 30-6.

Wildcats Surprise Hawkeyes On The Road

Last week, the Northwestern Wildcats had the week off, but prior to that they were able to topple Iowa on the road by a score of 38-31 in a game that was much higher scoring than expected. The teams didn’t pile up a ton of yards in the game, but both did get a lot of points in the game. Northwestern had just 362 yards in the game, but 198 of that was on the ground, which is nothing new for this team as they do prefer to run the ball, but haven’t been great at it this year as they rank 115th in that department, rushing for just 126 ypg so far. Leading the attack for them over Iowa was Justin Jackson, who had 171 yards and a TD on 26 carries. He leads the team with 507 yards on the ground so far this year.
At QB, Clayton Thorson, had a good game vs the Hawkeyes as he threw for 164 yards with three TDs and no INTs. For the year now he has thrown for 1120 yards with eight TDs and four INTs, but has hit just 54.4% of his passes so far. He has been solid, but not spectacular this year. The offense is not a strength of this team, but the defense has been and they did allowed just 283 yards in the win over Iowa, including just 79 yards on the ground. The Cats have allowed 405.5 ypg on the year, which is 7th in the nation, but they have also allowed just 19.8 ppg, which is 25th. They may give up plenty of yards, but not a lot of points.

Spartans Skid Hits Three In A Row With Loss To BYU

Last year, the Spartans were in the NCAA Playoffs, but they fell 38-0 to the Crimson Tide in the semifinals and their struggles from that game seemed to have followed them to this year. State did start the year with a win over Furman, but only by a 28-13 score and then they topped Notre Dame on the road by 8, but nearly let that one slip away after building a huge lead. Since then it has been all downhill for the Spartans as they have lost their last three games in a row, including a 31-14 home loss to BYU last week. It just hasn’t been a good stretch for them and after totaling 66 points in their first two games, they have now scored just 41 total points in their last three games. It is clear that they miss Connor Cook at QB. The Spartans are 102nd in total offense this year, 86th in passing, 88th in rushing and 112th in scoring, putting up just 21 ppg so far.
That offense was good for just 206 total yards in the loss to a BYU team that had allowed 1173 yards and 88 points in their two previous games. The Spartans have Tyler O’Connor at QB this year and he has hit 60.9% of his passes for 976 yards and eight TDs, but he also has thrown five picks on the year. He shared duties with Damion Terry and he threw for just 58 yards in the loss to BYU. On defense, the Spartans are normally stout vs the Run, but BYU ran for 260 yards on them. The Spartans are now 41st in the nation against the run, allowing just 136.4 ypg. Overall they are 38th in total yards allowed and 53rd in points allowed, giving up 25.2 ppg.

Two weeks ago the, Wildcats played a very high scoring game vs Iowa, but there were not many yards gained in that game. I don’t expect many yards in this one either and that should lead to not many points as well. These are two of the worst offensive team in the league, while on defense both of them are solid. The offense will not be able to move the ball all that easily in this one as we get a game that sees around 35 points at most being scored.
