After deflating loss, Buckeyes open as dogs for first time this season

Jim Harbaugh and Michigan have opened as slight faves over rival Ohio State, who are dogs for the first time this season.

Defending national champion Ohio State had won 23 consecutive games heading into Saturday’s home contest against Michigan State. The Buckeyes hadn’t lost since the second week of the 2014 season, and by the oddsmakers’ estimates, it sure looked like No. 24 was all but guaranteed.

Ohio State was a hefty 14.5-point home favorite, but had a dismal offensive showing and lost outright to the Spartans, 17-14. That put a severe dent in any chance the Buckeyes (10-1 SU, 4-7 ATS) might have at not just the Big Ten title, but a return trip to the four-team national championship playoff.

Now, in the regular-season finale, Ohio State has to travel to archrival Michigan, where the Wolverines will be eager to add to the Buckeyes’ newfound misery. Michigan (9-2 SU, 6-5 ATS) has bounced back since suffering its own stunning loss to Michigan State, winning four in a row SU, including Saturday’s 28-16 victory as a 3.5-point chalk at Penn State.

Johnny Avello, executive director of race and sports for Wynn Las Vegas, said both teams’ situations – both still have an outside shot to reach the Big Ten title game – made it tough to handicap this game. Avello sent Michigan out as a 2.5-point favorite.

“I looked at this game a few times trying to decide what to make this opening number,” Avello said. “Ohio State is probably out of the playoff mix and somewhat deflated after the Michigan State loss, but this is still a huge rivalry and recruiting game.”

    Iowa (-3) at Nebraska

Arguably as stunning as Ohio State’s loss is the fact that Iowa (10-0 SU, 6-5 ATS) represents the Big Ten’s best shot to make the four-team playoff. On Saturday, the Hawkeyes eased past Purdue 40-20, though they failed to cash as a big 23-point home favorite.

Nebraska (5-6 SU, 6-5 ATS) has had an awful season by its standards, but did pull off a home upset of Michigan State earlier this month and enters the regular-season finale off a bye week. The Huskers followed up the 39-38 win over the Spartans as a 3.5-point home underdog with a 31-14 Nov. 14 victory at Rutgers laying 7.5 points.

The border rivals are on a slightly shorter week, playing Friday.

“This is not the easiest of regular-season closing games for an undefeated Iowa team,” said Avello, noting the Huskers’ three home losses came by a total of nine points. “Nebraska is 3-3 at home this season, and when you take a closer look at the scores of those games, you can sense this is going to be a close one.”

    Oklahoma (-4) at Oklahoma State

It’s the Bedlam Game, and it could certainly create just that with regard to the four-team playoff picture. Oklahoma State had everything pointing in its favor – an unbeaten SU record and all key opponents having to travel to Stillwater. But the Cowboys (10-1 SU, 6-5 ATS) got outgunned Saturday, going off as a 3-point home pup to Baylor and losing 45-35.

Oklahoma, meanwhile, has a chance to play itself into the playoff. The Sooners (10-1 SU, 8-3 ATS) have won six in a row SU, failing to cover only once in that stretch, in Saturday’s 30-29 victory over Texas Christian as a stout 18-point home fave.

“If Oklahoma wins this, I believe they have a very good shot at the playoff,” Avello said. “It is concerning that you will get lapses from this Sooners group during the 60-minute timetable, and it happened again this week as a Trevone Boykin-less TCU crawled back in the game and almost spoiled the Sooners’ season.”

    Notre Dame at Stanford (-3)

The Fighting Irish (10-1 SU, 7-4 ATS) have held it together with duct tape and bailing wire this year, and might just find their way into the four-team playoff if they can do that for one more week. Notre Dame had five turnovers in the first three quarters Saturday against Boston College, but mustered a 19-16 victory giving 14.5 points on a “neutral” field – Boston’s Fenway Park.

Stanford can play big spoiler and wrap up its spot in the Pac-12 title game by beating the Irish. The Cardinal (9-2 SU, 8-3 ATS) bounced back from an upset home loss to Oregon by beating California 35-22 as a 10-point home chalk Saturday.

“If Notre Dame turns the ball over five times this week, it will be lights out for the Irish,” Avello said. “They did however survive, and now this may be the last hurdle to become part of the four-team playoff. Stanford has different plans and will try to avenge last year’s 17-14 loss at South Bend.”

          Tuesday's MAC Tip Sheet
          November 24, 2015

          **Bowling Green at Ball State**

-- Bowling Green (8-3 straight up, 8-3 against the spread) has already won the MAC East to clinch a third straight trip to the MAC Championship Game. As of early Friday morning, most books had the Falcons installed as 22.5-point favorites with a total of 71. William Hill had Ball State available on the money line for a 10/1 payout (risk $100 to win $1,000).

-- Bowling Green saw its seven-game winning streak snapped last Tuesday in a 44-28 loss vs. Toledo as an eight-point home favorite. The Falcons fell behind 20-0 and 30-7, but they scored with 1:34 left in the second quarter to trim their deficit to 30-14. Matt Johnson twice pulled Dino Babers’s team to within nine with a pair of third-quarter scoring strikes to Gehrig Dieter. However, a Johnson fumble late in the stanza left the Rockets with a first-and-goal situation. The senior signal caller would commit three of his team’s five turnovers. He completed 28-of-46 passes for 274 yards and three TDs. Dieter finished the night with 13 receptions for 103 yards and three TDs, while Travis Greene rushed for 73 yards on 17 carries and a pair of catches for 43 yards. Rogers Lewis caught only three balls for 32 yards.

-- Johnson has enjoyed an incredible season, completing 68.3 percent of his passes for 4,229 yards with a 39/6 touchdown-to-interception ratio. Four wide receivers have at least 50 receptions led by Lewis’s 72 catches for 1,342 yards and 14 TDs. Dieter has 71 receptions for 801 yards and eight TDs. Ronnie Moore has 59 grabs for 763 yards and five TDs, while Ryan Burbink has 50 catches for 591 yards and four scores.

-- Greene has rushed for a team-best 939 yards and 10 TDs, averaging 5.7 yards per carry. Fred Coppet is a more-than-capable No. 2 back, producing 603 rushing yards and three TDs while averaging 5.6 YPC. Greene also has 22 receptions for two TDs.

-- Ball State (3-8 SU, 4-7 ATS) has dropped back-to-back games and seven of its last eight. Pete Lembo’s team, which is mired in a 2-5 ATS slump, is going to have a second straight losing season after going bowling in 2012 and ’13. The Cardinals are off a 48-31 loss at Ohio as 10-point underdogs.

-- Ball State close the 2014 regular season by capturing a 41-24 win at Bowling Green as a 10-point underdog.

-- Ball State owns a 5-5 spread record in 10 games as a home underdog on Lembo’s watch.

-- The ‘over is 6-5 overall for the Falcons, but the ‘under’ has cashed in four of their six road assignments, including four in a row. Their games have averaged a combined score of 72.3 points per game.

-- The ‘under’ is 7-4 overall for Ball State, 4-1 in its home games. The ‘under’ is on a 7-2 run in the Cardinals’ last nine outings.

-- Weather.com is calling for a forecast of mostly clear skies and a low temperature of 33 degrees.

-- Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. Eastern on ESPN3.

          **Ohio at No. Illinois**

-- As of early this morning, most books had No. Illinois (8-3 SU, 7-2-2 ATS) tabbed as a 13.5-point favorite with a total of 56. The Bobcats were +425 on the money line (risk $100 to win $425).

-- No. Illinois can clinch a fifth consecutive trip to the MAC Championship Game with a win over Ohio. The Huskies hold the tiebreaker over Toledo, which shares a 6-1 league record but lost at home to Rod Carey’s team two weeks ago.

-- NIU lost star QB Drew Hare in the first half of the win over the Rockets, but back-up QB Ryan Graham has stepped up and played well. The redshirt freshman completed 11-of-23 passes for 158 yards in last week’s 27-19 home win over Western Michigan. The Huskies covered the number as three-point favorites. Jordan Huff rushed for 159 yards and one TD on eight carries.

-- Ohio (7-4 SU, 7-4 ATS) has responded to a three-game slide both SU and ATS to win back-to-back contests both SU and ATS. The Bobcats smashed Ball State by a 48-31 count as 10-point home ‘chalk’ last Tuesday. J.D. Sprague connected on 15-of-22 throws for 275 yards and three TDs without an interception against the Cardinals. A.J. Ouellette rushed 22 times for 121 yards and two TDs, while Dorian Brown had 82 rushing yards on 12 carries. Jordan Reid hauled in four receptions for 112 yards and two TDs, while Sebastian Smith had seven catches for 89 yards and one TD.

-- Sprague, a junior, has filled in for Derrius Vick since he sprained his ankle in a 27-0 win over Kent State on Nov. 10. For the season, Sprague has a 6/1 TD-INT ratio. Vick was considered ‘questionable’ as of early this morning. The senior signal caller has completed 63.7 percent of his passes for 1,807 yards with a 10/6 TD-INT ratio.

-- Ohio has five defensive starters listed as ‘questionable’ with various injuries, including LB Quentin Poling, who has 54 tackles, seven tackles for loss, three sacks, three interceptions, two forced fumbles and two passes broken up. LB Blair Brown, who has 58 tackles and 4.5 tackles for loss, is another of the Bobcats’ injured defenders.

-- Ohio has been a road underdog twice this year, going 1-1 ATS. The Bobcats have compiled a 15-22-1 spread ledger in 38 games as road puppies on Frank Solich’s watch.

-- NIU is unbeaten in five home games this year with a 3-1-1 ATS record. During Carey’s three-year tenure, the Huskies are 6-8-1 ATS as home favorites.

-- When these teams met last year, NIU collected a 21-14 win as a three-point road favorite.

-- The ‘over’ is 7-4 overall for Ohio, 4-1 in its five road assignments.

-- The ‘over’ is 6-5 overall for the Huskies, 4-1 in their home games. They’ve seen their games average combined scores of 60.5 PPG.

-- The forecast in Dekalb is calling for 10 miles-per-hour winds and a low temperature of 29 degrees.

-- ESPNU will have the telecast at 7:30 p.m. Eastern.

          **B.E’s Bonus Nuggets**

-- Already down six starters to season-ending injuries, Notre Dame will be without another and two more are listed as ‘doubtful’ Saturday at Stanford. The Fighting Irish won’t have CB KeiVarae Russell, who has 60 tackles, 3.5 tackles for loss, four passes broken up, two forced fumbles, two interceptions and one sack. LB James Onwaualu is ‘doubtful’ with a knee injury, while RB C.J. Prosise is ‘doubtful’ with a sprained ankle. Brian Kelly has guided Notre Dame to a 7-4 spread record in 11 games as a road underdog during his six-year stay in South Bend. The Cardinal is favored by four.

-- Indiana star RB Jordan Howard is ‘questionable’ Saturday at Purdue after spraining his ankle in the first quarter of last week’s win at Maryland. Howard has rushed for 1,213 yards and nine TDs. The Hoosiers are vying to become eligible for the first time on Kevin Wilson’s watch and the first time since 2007.

-- Washington State has covered the spread in eight consecutive games, but it won’t have its best offensive lineman Joe Dahl (foot) for Friday’s game at Washington. The Cougars probably won’t have All-American candidate Luke Falk, the sophomore QB who sustained a head injury in last week’s home win over Colorado. Riley Sorenson, Wazzu’s junior starting center, is ‘questionable’ along with WR River Cracraft.

-- After practicing Monday, TCU star QB Trevone Boykin was upgraded to ‘probable’ for Friday’s Big 12 showdown at home vs. Baylor. He missed this past Saturday’s 30-29 loss at Oklahoma due to an ankle injury.

-- Baylor QB Jarrett Stidham is ‘doubtful’ at TCU due to an ankle injury, while starting safety Orion Stewart (hamstring) and starting DT Beau Blackshear (undisclosed) are ‘questionable.’

            SEC Betting Notebook
            November 23, 2015

UPDATE: Les Miles just addressed the media and he's not fired yet. He'll coach vs. Texas A&M this week, but it seems clear that he'll be gone next week. I say that because he certainly didn't go to great lengths to deny any potential change after the game Saturday against the Aggies.

According to Yahoo’s Pat Forde, LSU is “prepared” to go in another direction and remove Les Miles as its head coach. Forde noted that the decision was not final, however.

But there’s a lot of smoke and it sure as hell looks imminent. Since starting this season 7-0, the Tigers have lost three games in a row by double-digit margins for the first time since 1966.

There are so many layers to this story. For starters, LSU’s big-money boosters are poised to pay Miles’s staggering $15 million buyout, in addition to nearly $5 million of payouts to his staff.

Next, let’s inform you that LSU currently has the No. 1 ranked recruiting class lined up for 2016. Therefore, you could see perhaps north of a dozen big-time recruits looking for another school, much to the delight of other SEC schools and beyond.

Also, move over Tom Herman and Justin Fuente as the hottest names in this upcoming Coaching Carousel. There’s now Les Miles and possibly Chip Kelly as the new front-runners to land the best available gigs, which already include Southern California, South Carolina, Virginia Tech, Miami, Fl., Missouri and Illinois.

Other potential openings include Georgia, especially if it loses Saturday at Georgia Tech, and Mississippi State, because Dan Mullen is going to be a prime candidate at several schools.

And hell, don’t think that some ADs won’t be gauging interest in Miles and/or Kelly that could prompt them to make a change they wouldn’t otherwise be making this year.

Miles had done wonders for LSU. He wasn’t the school’s first (or second, or third, or fourth) choice to replace Nick Saban, but he was an outstanding hire to say the least.

Did he have his faults? You bet he did. In fact, this space has chronicled his clock-management ineptitude for most of the last decade. At the same time, we clearly pointed to his greatness in terms of motivating and recruiting. His players have always played hard for him, especially in the big games under the most spotlight.

Now obviously, these last three games have been an exception, but should anyone point to those defeats as being based on a lack of effort or being ready to play? No, but you can point to a lack of creativity on the offensive side of the ball, something Miles’s critics have been howling about since the debacle of a BCS Championship Game in New Orleans in January of 2012 when Alabama dealt out cream-cheese treatment to the Tigers in a 21-0 clubbing.

I was at the Superdome that night and found it mind-boggling that Miles wouldn't yank the ineffective Jordan Jefferson. Many LSU supporters have never forgiven him for that miserable night at the Superdome.

As great as LSU has been on the recruiting trail, it has failed miserably in attracting a high-profile QB. The one it had seemingly on the way several years ago, Gunner Kiel, made a last-second decision on Signing Day to de-commit and go to Notre Dame instead.

Before Miles arrived in Red Stick, LSU had seven 10-win seasons in school history. On his watch for 11 years, Miles produced seven seasons of 10 wins or more, including a pair of SEC championships and one national title in 2007.

He didn’t have the moxy and charisma of Steve Spurrier, but he certainly entertained in his own unique (albeit somewhat strange) way. His penchant for calling trick plays at the right time was masterful, and they almost always worked.

I’ve watched every play of every Florida-LSU game for the last 11 years. I can think of at least a half-dozen trick plays that led to victory against the Gators and if there’s one that didn’t work, it’s been erased from my memory bank.

Assuming Miles will be gone soon, his final stat line as head coach at LSU will read like this: 110 wins, 32 losses (pending the A&M result Saturday). Not bad for a Plan D (at best) hire by LSU.

Like I told every Tennessee fan that would listen in 2008 when UT sent Phil Fulmer packing, be careful what you wish for, LSU fans. You just might get it.

            **B.E.'s Bonus Nuggets**

-- As we stated, Miles will have head-coaching offers galore, but can't we dream for a minute? How good would an ESPN show hosted by Rece Davis or Chris Fowler be with Steve Spurrier and The Hat as the analysts? Give them a one-hour show one night a week and it would be TV GOLD!

-- At Jim McElwain's presser in Gainesville a few hours ago, he informed the media of injuries galore impacting the Gators going into Saturday's showdown vs. FSU at The Swamp. Now to be clear, McElwain is similar to Saban, Mike Leach, Bill Belichick and others when it comes to injuries. In other words, don't take any of this to be no-doubt-about-it truth, especially when it comes to All-American candidate Jonathan Bullard. McElwain said the senior DT is "probably out" against the 'Noles. I find that hard to believe, however, because Bullard returned to Saturday' win against FAU after injuring his knee in the first half. Mac said a pair of defensive linemen, Alex McAllister and Taven Bryan, are 'out' and I believe him on those two guys. McAllister is a likely All-SEC selection who hurt his foot at South Carolina two weeks ago. WR Brandon Powell is 'questionable' with a foot injury, while DT Joey Ivie (four sacks) is "questionable to doubtful." Also, freshman OG Martez Ivey, a key member of a shaky offensive line, is 'questionable.' Most books opened the Gators as three-point favorites, but the 'Noles were favored by two early Monday afternoon.

-- Washington State QB Luke Falk suffered a scary head injury late Saturday night in a win over Colorado. He is 'doing fine' according to Wazzu's AD, but gamblers should consider him 'doubtful' for the Apple Bowl this week.

-- The 'under' improved to 10-0-1 in Vanderbilt games in the team's 25-0 loss Saturday vs. Texas A&M.

              Top 25 Notes

-- It was a rough day for a handful of Top 25 teams, including the defending national champion Ohio State Buckeyes. Despite the fact Michigan State was down to their backup quarterback, Sparty used its defense to shut down the Buckeyes offense, holding them to 132 total yards in the 17-14 loss. Michigan State has worked themselves right back into the picture for a spot in the four-team playoff. ... Oregon worked back into the Top 25, and they manhandled Southern California 48-28 to pick up their fifth consecutive win and cover. They head into the Civil War against beleaguered Oregon State looking for their ninth victory of the season. ... Louisiana State's slide continues, as they lost 38-17 at Mississippi. The Tigers are 0-3 SU/ATS, and head coach Les Miles is reportedly experiencing a bit of a hot seat in Baton Rouge as a result. The total on this game was a bad beat, too (see below).

-- Texas Christian were forced to play without QB Trevone Boykin at Oklahoma, but the Horned Frogs turned in a valiant effort, and nearly pulled off the upset. Down 30-13, the Horned Frogs rallied with 16 points in the fourth quarter. With less than a minute left they elected to go for the two-point conversion and win, missing out on the chance for the upset. TCU entered 1-4 ATS in five previous road games. The 'under' is now 4-1 in their past five outings.

-- Houston suffered a 20-17 setback at Connecticut, losing as a 7 1/2-point road favorite. It was the first loss of the season for the Cougars, who have failed to cover in three straight while the 'under' has connected in four in a row.

-- Navy hit the road in AAC play, too, and the No. 19 team in the land had very little trouble with Tulsa. The Midshipmen improved to 9-1 SU and 8-2 ATS, including covers in each of the past four. The 'over' has also connected in three in a row for the Middies. It nearly didn't turn out that way, however (see below).

Big Five Conference Report (ACC, Big 10, Big 12, Pac-12, SEC)

-- Boston College put up a strong fight at Fenway Park against Notre Dame, falling 19-16. The 'under' hit again for the Eagles, and it is now 8-1 in their past nine games against FBS opponents. ... Wake Forest fell at Clemson 33-13, but they picked up the cover for the third consecutive week. The 'under' also hit for Wake in a third straight game. They'll wrap up their season against Duke next Saturday. ... Speaking of the Blue Devils, they fell to 0-4 SU/ATS since their lateral-filled kickoff loss against Miami. It was Virginia sinking Duke this time, 42-34, as the Cavaliers picked up their fifth consecutive cover.

-- Iowa doubled up Purdue 40-20, but the Boilermakers earned the cover. While the Hawkeyes are unbeaten at 11-0, they are just 2-4 ATS over their past six games. One point of consistency for the Hawkeyes has been the 'over', as it has cashed in three in a row and five of the past six. ... Indiana and Maryland totaled 75 points, as the 'over' has now cashed in five in a row for the Hoosiers and four of the past six for the Terps.

-- Iowa State fell 38-35 at Kansas State, but the Cyclones were able to pick up their fourth conver in the past five games after opening the season 2-3-1 ATS in their first six. The 'over' has cashed in three in a row for I-State. ... West Virginia blanked Kansas 49-0 for their second shutout of the season. It is the first time all season the Mountaineers have recorded back-to-back covers.

-- In the 'Big Game' in Palo Alto, Stanford posted a 35-22 win over California. The Golden Bears have hit the skids after opening 3-1 ATS. Cal has covered just twice in the past seven games. One thing that has been consistent is the 'under' for Cal, going 7-1 in the past eight games. The 'under' is also 4-1 in the past five games for the Cardinal. ... Oregon State was dumped 52-7 at home against Washington, and they're now just 1-7 ATS over the past eight, and 2-9 ATS in 11 games overall.

-- South Carolina slipped up at home to FCS The Citadel, 23-22. The Gamecocks weren't the only SEC team to have its hands full against lesser talent. Florida Atlantic forced overtime at Florida, falling 20-14, and Georgia Southern also took Georgia to the brink before the Bulldogs escaped in overtime themselves.

              Mid-Major Report

-- South Florida rolled to another huge win, stomping Cincinnati 65-27 in Friday night action. The Bulls were short dogs at home, but won and covered for the third straight. They're also 6-1 SU/ATS in their past seven heading into their season finale at UCF Friday. ... Southern Methodist snapped an eight-game skid with a 49-21 win over Tulane. It was just the second cover for the Mustangs in the past eight games after opening the season 3-0 ATS. The 'over' is now 3-0 in three straight for SMU, and 7-2 in the past nine heading into their game at Memphis next Saturday. ... Speaking of the Tigers, they were dumped 31-12 at Temple to suffer a third straight loss. The Tigers are 1-3 ATS over the past four, and 3-5-1 ATS in their past nine outings.

-- Middle Tennessee won 41-7 against visiting North Texas, as the Blue Raiders are now bowl eligible. More importantly they have covered three in a row, and the 'under' has hit in four straight. ... Southern Mississippi rallied in the fourth quarter to grab another cover, 56-31 over Old Dominion. The Golden Eagles are now 9-2 ATS on the season.

-- In MACtion, Central Michigan posted a 27-14 road win at Kent State. It was the sixth win of the year to get the Chippewas bowl eligible, and they're now 9-2 ATS through 11 games. ... Ohio covered for the second straight game, and they 'over' is now 4-1 in their past five games.

-- San Jose State won in the islands Saturday night, topping Hawaii 42-23. The Spartans are 3-1 ATS over the past four, and 6-2 ATS over the past eight. They will host Boise State Friday night. ... The Broncos were dropped on the 'Smurf Turf' for the second straight game, and they're now just 1-4 ATS over the past five games.

              Bad Beats

-- If you had the 'under' (76) in Baylor-Oklahoma State, it was a really tough night. With 2:10 left, Baylor scored a touchdown to go up 45-28. Just 58 seconds later it was OK State striking for a touchdown to push what looked like a certain 'under' into a losing ticket.

-- Tulsa found the end zone with 2:55 left in a 44-21 loss against Navy to push the total 'over' (64.5), much to the dismay of those holding under tickets.

-- 'Over' (58.5) bettors were feeling great with 55 total points in the LSU-Ole Miss game. However, they weren't feeling as cheerful after a scoreless fourth quarter turned what looked like a sure over into a losing ticket.

-- It was even worse if you had an 'over' (51.5) play Thursday night in East Carolina-UCF. The Pirates carried a 44-7 lead into the fourth quarter against the Golden Knights, but neither team was in the mood to score any additional points. A scoreless fourth quarter helped 'under' bettors score a miraculous and unexpected win.

-- If you got in early on the Oklahoma line, you might have been laying just 10 points. The Sooners appeared to be in control late, up 30-13 heading to the fourth quarter. However, they lost QB Baker Mayfield to injury, the offense completely bogged down and TCU outscored them 16-0 in the fourth quarter to kill all Sooners side bettors.

-- The Central Michigan-Kent State game had a total opening line of 42, while spending plenty of time at 41 1/2 and 41 before finally closing at 40. If you had 'under' (42), you were thrilled with a 27-14 result and scoreless fourth quarter. If you had 'over' (40 1/2)...ouch.

                4th Quarter Covers - Week 12
                November 22, 2015

Glancing at the scoreboard won’t tell you the whole story in most games. Here are some of the games that went down to the wire relative to the spread in the fourth quarter last week in the second to last big weekend of the college football regular season. Each week there are several teams that cover despite not necessarily deserving it, as well as other teams that played much better than the final score shows.

Northern Illinois (-3) 27, Western Michigan 19: In Wednesday’s key MAC West matchup, Western Michigan seemed to take control in the third quarter with a 72-yard pass play putting the Broncos up 19-14 heading into the fourth quarter. Early in the final frame, the perennial division champion Huskies put together a 93-yard scoring drive to take the lead 20-19, but the two-point conversion was missed leaving the underdog in position to cover. Pinned deep later in the final frame, Northern Illinois went 97 yards for another score with a big 53-yard pass play as the Huskies went past the spread to lead 27-19. On the next possession, Western Michigan reached the Northern Illinois 1-yard line but down eight with time running short, the Broncos had to eventually go for it on 4th-and-goal and they came up short with an incompletion. In the final two minutes, Western Michigan had the ball back across midfield, but the Huskies got another big stop to hold on.

Georgia State (-3) 24, South Alabama 10: South Alabama took a 10-0 lead early in this Sun Belt matchup, but Georgia State managed to tie the game by the start of the fourth quarter and just seconds into the final frame, the Panthers completed a 78-yard touchdown drive to take the lead for the first time in the game, also getting past the spread. Just over five minutes later, Georgia State completed another long touchdown drive as the South Alabama offense had a very poor second half.

Minnesota (-4½) 32, Illinois 23: The Gophers led by eight at the half, but that lead was cut in half by the start of the fourth quarter, leaving Minnesota short of the home favorite spread in a matchup of two Big Ten teams that still sit short of bowl eligibility. Early in the fourth quarter, Illinois had an interception going for it on fourth down in Minnesota territory down by four and on the next Illinois drive, the team faced a tough decision still down by four sitting at fourth-and-3 from the Minnesota 18. With just under seven minutes to go, Illinois kicked the field goal and the margin was just a single point. After an exchange of punts, Minnesota was really just aiming to burn out the clock in the final minutes, but Shannon Brooks broke free for 75 yards and a touchdown. Up seven, the Gophers went for two and got it and it was a nine-point margin and the win was in hand, but Illinois was still a threat to get back within the spread. On its final drive, the Illini reached the Minnesota 28-yard line before a fumble ended the threat.

North Carolina (-4) 30, Virginia Tech 27: While this ACC Coastal clash was tied at 10-10 heading into the fourth quarter, it looked like the Tar Heels would pull away with consecutive touchdowns to lead 24-10 with less than eight minutes to go. A promising Virginia Tech drive looking to answer ended in an interception, but North Carolina gave the ball back with a fumble. The Hokies cashed in to get within seven and the Tar Heels fumbled again a few plays later. With just over a minute to go facing fourth down, Virginia Tech converted for the tying touchdown and overtime was needed in Frank Beamer’s final game in Blacksburg. The Hokies went first and had to settle for a field goal while North Carolina was able to get the touchdown facing a third-and-goal as the Tar Heels got the win to move to 10-1, but fell short of the road favorite spread.

                NC State (-20) 42, Syracuse 29:
NC State led by just five early in the third quarter, but after an interception return touchdown and another score early in the fourth quarter, the Wolfpack were past the heavy favorite spread with a 42-16 advantage. A fumble return touchdown for the Orange put Syracuse back within the number with less than six minutes to go and then the Orange got the on-side kick and added another touchdown for good measure.

Mississippi State (+6) 51, Arkansas 50: The underdog Bulldogs moved the ball with ease in the first half taking a 31-14 lead late in the second quarter after another big pass play. In the final minute of the first half, Arkansas found the end zone to cut the margin to 10 points to stay in the game. In the second half, three straight Mississippi State turnovers handed Arkansas short fields to work with and the Razorbacks scored three straight touchdowns to take a commanding 42-31 lead. Arkansas was in position to add more points late in the third quarter facing fourth-and-short in field goal range. Arkansas opted not to go for the field goal to take a 14-point lead and also opted not to make a more conventional fourth-and-short play, going deep to the end zone and overshooting it to hand Mississippi State the ball back.

The Bulldogs were back within four early in the fourth quarter and then took the lead a few minutes later. Mississippi State missed the extra point after that second touchdown and led by just two, leaving room for Arkansas to get back past the spread on the next score, leading 50-44 and just past the common numbers on the game. On a pivotal third down play, Dak Prescott connected for a touchdown to Mississippi State up by one with just over three minutes to go. In quick order, Arkansas was down the field with some big pass plays, getting a new set of downs from the Mississippi State 19-yard line with about a minute to go. Rather than trying to score, the Razorbacks conservatively ran the ball to force Mississippi State to use its timeouts to the chagrin of those on the favorite looking for a touchdown. It wound up costing the Razorbacks as the 29-yard field goal attempt to win was blocked.

Oklahoma (-17½) 30, TCU 29: Oklahoma took a 23-7 lead at the half and that lead moved to 30-13, right even with the common Saturday spread of -17 heading into the fourth quarter as TCU went for two after its third quarter touchdown and failed. At the time that point didn’t seem terribly important but the Frogs put together an incredible fourth quarter rallying back into the game and scoring a touchdown in the final minute to get within one point. The cover was clearly in hand for TCU, but the Frogs opted to go for the outright win going for two rather than looking at overtime. The pass attempt to an open receiver was blocked as Oklahoma survived.

Southern Miss (-21) 56, Old Dominion 31: Old Dominion led Southern Miss 31-21 halfway through the third quarter, but the Golden Eagles managed to score five touchdowns in just over 13 minutes of game clock to incredibly still cover a three-touchdown spread. Turnovers set up the first two scores for Southern Miss on short fields and Old Dominion had a drive well into Southern Miss territory late in the game with a chance to get back within the number but could not convert on a key fourth down play.

                Kansas State (-3) 38, Iowa State 35:
Most on the underdog Cyclones still wound up winning as this line dropped sharply Saturday morning but with Iowa State up 35-14 at the break, there was little doubt it would be a winning underdog ticket. Kansas State had some early blunders to fall behind and the Wildcats got back in the game with a pair of touchdowns to get within seven points early in the fourth quarter. With less than three minutes to go, Kansas State came up short going for it on fourth-and-long near midfield and it seemed like that would be the game, but Iowa State incredibly fumbled on its next play from scrimmage. Four plays later, Kansas State had tied the game with just 42 seconds on the clock as overtime looked necessary. Iowa State quarterback Joel Lanning would be sacked as the Cyclones opted not to take a knee to run out the clock and a fumble allowed Kansas State to hit the game-winning field goal in the final seconds, though that was not quite enough for most on the home favorite.

Stanford (-10) 35, California 22: California gave Stanford all it could handle Saturday night, closing to within five points at the end of the third quarter as a big halftime lead for the Cardinal was nearly erased. Stanford ran the ball well in the final frame and opened up a 35-16 lead but a Cal touchdown late in the game made many sweat. The Bears were down 13 and going for two with the spread on the game between -12 and -10 for most during the week. The conversion missed as Stanford wound up with a double-digit margin of victory despite Cal posting substantially more yards.

Colorado State (-3) 28, New Mexico 21: Colorado State led by three at the half, even with the closing number. A short field goal put the Rams up 20-14, but New Mexico broke a long run to take a 21-20 lead heading into the fourth quarter. The Rams were shut down going for it on fourth down on the next possession, but the Lobos failed to add points with a missed field goal attempt. Early in the fourth quarter, the Rams completed a long drive and found the end zone, adding the two-point conversion as well to go up by seven points. The final two drives for New Mexico both ended in interceptions as a missed field goal from Colorado State to ice the game wound up not mattering.

Washington State (-14) 27, Colorado 3: Washington State was stingy defensively with a 17-0 lead into the second half, but the Cougars lost quarterback Luke Falk to injury. A field goal for the Buffaloes put the game right on the number, but in the fourth quarter the Cougars added 10 points for the comfortable victory and cover while Colorado could not come up with points despite moving the ball reasonably well on three late possessions.

Auburn (-33) 56, Idaho 34: Auburn briefly got past the heavy favorite spread leading 56-20 after Roc Thomas broke a 56-yard run for a touchdown. The Vandals scored twice in the fourth quarter to get back under the number while Auburn showed limited interest in moving the ball in its final two possessions.

Notre Dame (-15) 19, Boston College 16: The Irish got past the favorite spread at Fenway with a 19-3 lead about five minutes into the fourth quarter. Boston College broke an 80-yard run on the next play from scrimmage with a game-changing score. The two-point conversion attempt was missed as the Irish led by 10, but after consecutive punts Boston College put together a great late drive to solidify the underdog cover, finding the end zone in the final minute. Notre Dame was able to run out the rest of the clock to hold on to the win.

                  LSU's Miles sidestepping questions
                  November 23, 2015

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) LSU coach Les Miles considers talk about his job security ''off limits'' as the Tigers prepare to host Texas A&M on Saturday night.

But Miles also said Monday that Louisiana is ''home'' as he nears the end of his 11th season with the Tigers.

LSU has lost three straight for the first time since Miles arrived in 2005. The skid has dropped LSU to 7-3 and out of the Top 25.

''I think the question's valid,'' Miles said of the questions regarding his future. ''At some point in time there's a me in this. Not while I'm coaching. This will always be about our players.''

Miles did not whether he's met with top LSU athletic department officials about his future, saying the only instruction he has received is to continue doing his job.

''Someone's asked me about coaching for my job and I think I've done that for 11 years,'' Miles said.

The coach said he plans to hold a team meeting before practice but did not go into specifics about what he would tell his players about his status.

Miles said he met with his assistants Monday morning.

''They kind of understand this is not about me. This is about the team. This is about preparing to beat an opponent and enjoy the young men that we coach.''

The coach said there is ''probably some concern,'' among members of the coaching staff, but added that they understand that ''victory is maybe more important than anybody's job.''

The 62-year-old Miles is 110-33 at LSU with one national championship in the 2007 season. He is under contract through 2019 with a 2015 buyout figure of $15 million. Miles' buyout would decrease to $12.9 million if he was fired after Jan. 1.

Each of LSU's past three losses have come by double digits. The first of those losses came against Alabama, which had now beaten the Tigers five straight times, starting with the 2011-12 BCS title game in New Orleans.

If LSU loses to Texas A&M, the Tigers will finish 4-4 in the SEC for a second straight season.

Florida State coach Jimbo Fisher declined to talk specifically about the LSU coaching situation, but did address all the coaching vacancies and state of the profession.

''It's the nature of the business. There isn't patience or any of that anymore,'' Fisher said Monday. ''What have you done for me lately or how are you going to do it? I've never seen a year like this year. There are so many jobs and situations out there.''

Fisher said the College Football Playoffs has contributed to the changes.

''You have to get in the playoffs and that is where leaders of the university have to understand what they want and how they want it,'' Fisher said. ''Be very explanatory to the people there and if you do something just make sure you communicate.''

                    Buckeyes' Elliott apologizes for comments
                    November 23, 2015

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) Ohio State running back Ezekiel Elliott apologized for the critical comments he made about play calling after the Michigan State game and says it was the wrong time to make it known he would not be returning to school next season.

Elliott posted a long apology on Twitter on Monday saying, ''My intentions were not to point fingers at anyone for OUR failures.''

Buckeyes coach Urban Meyer says Elliott will not be disciplined and that he agreed that star junior should have carried the ball more in Saturday's loss. Meyer says he wished Elliott's comments would have been made in private instead of during a postgame interview, but that Elliott came to him and apologized.

Elliott had 12 carries in the Buckeyes' 17-14 loss at home to Michigan State.

Syracuse fires head coach Scott Shafer
                      November 23, 2015

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (AP) Syracuse became the latest school to join in the search for a new coach when Scott Shafer was fired on Monday, two days after the team's eighth straight loss.

Shafer will finish out his third season when the Orange host Boston College on Saturday. He had one more year left on his contract, but too much losing and too many empty seats at the Carrier Dome sealed his fate.

''I feel a change in leadership is needed at this time,'' athletic director Mark Coyle said in a statement.

The Orange (3-8, 1-5 ACC) started the season with three wins before the losses began piling up. The latest was 42-29 to North Carolina State.

Shafer is the latest of more than a dozen coaches to be either be fired, retire or resign. Among other schools looking or will soon be looking for a new coach are USC, Miami, South Carolina and Virginia Tech.

Coyle, hired as athletic director in June, had not spoken publicly about Shafer's future since issuing a wait-and-see approach before the season. The Orange finished 3-9 last season after a 2-0 start, and Shafer has gone just 2-13 in the ACC the past two years.

Syracuse hung tough at home against highly-ranked LSU in September and against top-ranked Clemson more recently, losing each game by 10 points. On the road, the Orange went 0-5, with four of the losses by more than three touchdowns.

The losing has been affecting some players. Early in the fourth quarter of the latest loss, wide receiver Brisly Estime was ejected after getting into a skirmish with N.C. State cornerback Juston Burris. Fellow Orange receiver Steve Ishmael was ejected later, picking up his second unsportsmanlike conduct penalty of the game after catching a 3-yard touchdown pass with 2:37 remaining.

The previous week against Clemson, Shafer was called for unsportsmanlike conduct after protesting a call by the officials.

Shafer was Syracuse's defensive coordinator for four seasons before taking over in 2013 for Doug Marrone, who left for the Buffalo Bills. Shafer led Syracuse to a 7-6 record his first season, including a win over Minnesota in the Texas Bowl.

Shafer worked his way up the coaching ranks before getting the Syracuse job. His 24-year career included assistant jobs at Indiana, Rhode Island, Northern Illinois, Illinois, and Western Michigan before he landed the defensive coordinator job under Jim Harbaugh at Stanford.

Shafer coached at Stanford for one season (2007) before being hired away by Rich Rodriguez at Michigan. He resigned after one subpar season with the Wolverines before Marrone hired him in 2009.

No. 11 UNC keeps focus on NC State

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) Marquise Williams insists he doesn't have a score to settle with rival North Carolina State.

The North Carolina quarterback has more important things to worry about than trash talk.

His 11th-ranked Tar Heels (10-1, 7-0 Atlantic Coast Conference) are in the midst of the program's best season in nearly two decades.

A year ago, a Wolfpack player called him out for being soft, and N.C. State backed up those strong words in a 35-7 thumping that has haunted the Tar Heels ever since.

''Last year's team was last year,'' Williams said Monday. ''Marquise Williams 2014 was last year. We're a different team. That's the thing - that's what rivals do. You go back and forth with each other.''

The Wolfpack (7-4, 3-4) didn't have any such incendiary comments this year, with coach Dave Doeren praising the Tar Heels for their quick-strike offense and their vastly improved defense.

''I don't really have to get fired up for this one,'' Doeren said. ''The guys, from the minute the (Syracuse) game ended, they're ready. The mental part of wanting to play well is not going to be a problem. Like I told them, this is not going to be, `Do you want to win the game?' It's not going to be, `Do you not like your opponent?'

''It's going to be, `Are you going to stay focused and execute the plan with great fundamentals and detail?'''

That's what the Wolfpack did last year in their lopsided win - their sixth in eight meetings with the Tar Heels. It came after defensive back Hakim Jones said Williams ''he basically almost quits because he doesn't really like to get hit'' when running.

Williams, the ACC's leading rusher among quarterbacks, ranks seventh in the league with an average of 66.6 yards and is just the fifth QB in conference history with at least 2,000 career yards rushing.

Asked if those words have stuck with him during the past 12 months, North Carolina coach Larry Fedora took a long pause before saying ''I don't know how to answer that.''

For the Tar Heels, the focus is on the present and the near future.

Fedora has spent the season keeping their focus on two key goals - winning the Coastal Division, and winning the mythical state championship.

North Carolina clinched at least a share of the Coastal title - and the ACC championship game berth that accompanies it - by beating Virginia Tech in overtime last week.

They will face No. 1 Clemson next week in Charlotte with the ACC title - and a berth in a major bowl or maybe even the College Football Playoff - on the line.

Not that anybody in light blue is looking ahead to that just yet.

Before the Tar Heels play for an ACC championship, they want to polish off their state title and make that blowout loss a more distant memory. They already have wins over two of their three main instate rivals, Wake Forest and Duke.

''We're not done. I won't sit back and look back until it's all over with,'' Fedora said. ''I told them earlier in the week, `We've come too far to only come this far.' We still have our blinders on and our heads down and continue to be focused on the job at hand. They know what we have to do.''

Big 12 title still possible, Oklahoma St looking to rebound
                          November 24, 2015

STILLWATER, Okla. (AP) Oklahoma State has plenty of reason to be disappointed.

A 45-35 loss to Baylor on Saturday night probably cost the team a shot at the College Football Playoff. But the No. 9 Cowboys (10-1, 7-1 Big 12, No. 5 CFP) still have plenty at stake in Saturday night's regular-season finale against No. 5 Oklahoma (10-1, 7-1, No. 7 CFP). The Cowboys would also need either No. 15 TCU on Friday, or Texas the following week, to defeat Baylor in order to win their first Big 12 title since 2011 and second overall.

''Obviously, there was disappointment. They wanted to win,'' coach Mike Gundy said Monday. ''We've put that game behind us. The attitude of the players is really good, and they practiced well (Sunday) night, so we're back to work and getting ready for (Oklahoma).''

Oklahoma State's players remained positive, realizing there is still plenty of work left to do.

''It's not easy. You definitely don't want to lose a game, especially after the season we've been having,'' junior linebacker Seth Jacobs said. ''But when it comes down to it, we still have a lot to play for and there's a lot at stake, so it's time to focus on the task at hand, and that's playing against OU and winning.''

Several factors will also help ensure that the Cowboys do not have a mental letdown. The biggest additional consideration is the Bedlam rivalry with Oklahoma, which always seems to produce memorable games under important circumstances.

Of course, a win not only gives OSU a chance to win the Big 12, it prevents Oklahoma from clinching the title, as well as a possible spot in the Playoff.

This will be the fifth time in the last eight years that the Bedlam game will have a direct impact on determining the Big 12 champion.

''Not much has to be said at all - it's Bedlam,'' senior backup quarterback J.W. Walsh said. ''You walk around campus and you go out to eat and people are talking about it. Anywhere you go in town, it's being talked about, so there's not much that needs to be said inside our locker room. We know how big a game it is, we know the impact and we're fired up to play it.''

It is also the final home game for 17 seniors on the roster. Walsh acknowledged that the pregame ceremony will be an emotional experience, but he was ready to embrace the moment.

''There's going to be a lot of emotion, but that's who I am,'' said Walsh, who leads the team with 11 rushing touchdowns and has also passed for 11 this season. ''I play with a lot of emotion, so I'm not going to try to hold anything back. I let my emotions play with me and I wear them on my sleeve, but it's going to be a lot of fun.''

Gundy expects his team to be mentally ready to come out and give Oklahoma its best game, with the Big 12 title on the line.

''Bedlam takes care of anything that would have happened,'' Gundy said of any potential letdown following Saturday's loss. ''I would like to think that our team has been prepared mentally for, at any time, whether it's a big win or a disappointing loss - you have to get ready to go to work on Sunday. I think they understand that.''

Hoosiers hoping Bucket comes with end to postseason drought
                            November 24, 2015

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (AP) Now that Indiana's six-game losing streak is history, the players can focus on ending a much longer drought.

For the first time in eight years and only the third time in the last 21, the Hoosiers are playing for the Old Oaken Bucket and a bowl bid at the same time.

''It would mean everything to me,'' left tackle Jason Spriggs said Monday. ''Being a senior, I wanted to be part of the team that turned this program. Going bowling would really be a nice end on that.''

Getting there won't be easy. It never is in this intrastate rivalry.

The last time Indiana (5-6, 1-6 Big Ten) had a chance to earn a postseason bid against Purdue, it took a 49-yard field with 30 seconds left to secure a 27-24 victory that sent the Hoosiers to the 2007 Insight Bowl.

A year earlier, in a similar scenario, Indiana couldn't get it done. A 28-19 loss on the Boilermakers' home turf turned out to be the final game the late Terry Hoeppner coached.

This time, Indiana appears to have the upper hand.

It has played well against four top 15 teams - Ohio State, Michigan State, Iowa and Michigan - but lost all four games.

The Hoosiers got their second road win of the season last weekend at Maryland by rallying from an 18-point deficit to match the third-biggest comeback in school history. A win at Purdue (2-9, 1-6) on Saturday would give Indiana two road wins in conference play for the first time since 2001 and three straight wins over the Boilermakers for the first time since 1945-47.

Purdue has not played well at home this season. The Boilermakers are 1-5 at Ross-Ade Stadium, where they've been outscored 244-162.

Even a loss might not completely eliminate the Hoosiers. There's a long-shot chance that if not enough teams are bowl eligible, Indiana could make it based on its Academic Progress Rate score.

Indiana doesn't want to be watching scoreboards, though.

And the team could be missing its top player. Running back Jordan Howard left last weekend's game after the first series with a knee injury and did not return. Coach Kevin Wilson said Howard was limited in practice Monday and a decision wouldn't be made until later this week.

''We'll always be smart with it,'' Wilson said. ''So we'll go through the week and see. Fortunately, we've got the same line.''

Howard has rushed for 1,213 yards and nine touchdowns this season despite missing two full games and parts of two others.

Without him, the Hoosiers still have run effectively. At Maryland, Howard ran three times for 14 yards. Indiana finished with 45 carries for 170.

That's not how the Hoosiers wanted to go into their most important rivalry game in eight years. But it's just one more obstacle they'll have to overcome if they're going to earn their second postseason bid since 1994.

''It would be something new,'' center Jake Reed said. ''It would be something we've never experienced before.''

Texas coach Charlie Strong: 'I don't run from anything'
                              November 24, 2015

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) Charlie Strong has spent weeks dismissing rumors he might leave Texas to chase the open job at Miami.

He tried to shut that down once and for all Monday, saying he's promised his players he's staying, and adding: ''I don't run from anything.''

Despite his 10-13 record at Texas, Strong's name first surfaced weeks ago as a potential candidate for Miami after the school fired Al Golden. Previous denials didn't seem to stop the speculation.

Texas interim athletic director Mike Perrin said last week Strong isn't leaving, and the coach used his weekly news conference to again dismiss rumors and give assurances he isn't chasing another job.

''I told our players I'm not going anywhere,'' Strong said. "I made a commitment here. We're going to see this program through. We're going to get it back on track.''

Texas (4-6, 3-4 Big 12) hosts Texas Tech (6-5, 3-5) on Thanksgiving. The Longhorns need to win their final two games to avoid a second straight losing season. Texas hasn't had consecutive losing seasons since 1988-89.

Strong has three seasons left on a five-year contract that pays him more than $5 million per year. But his tenure has been dogged by a losing record, changes on his coaching staff, administrative turmoil and some blowout losses that earlier this season raised questions about whether he could be fired.

By late October, Strong was facing questions about the Miami job. He tried to laugh them off at first but they kept coming.

His answers didn't change, but by last week the questions were consistent enough that he had to talk to his players to assure them he would not leave.

''I don't run from anything,'' said Strong, the first black head football coach at Texas. ''When you work so hard to place yourself in this position ... you grind it out.''

''We always talk to our players, you hang in there, it may not be the way you want, but so what? There's no self-pity,'' Strong said.
