After deflating loss, Buckeyes open as dogs for first time this season

Jim Harbaugh and Michigan have opened as slight faves over rival Ohio State, who are dogs for the first time this season.

Defending national champion Ohio State had won 23 consecutive games heading into Saturday’s home contest against Michigan State. The Buckeyes hadn’t lost since the second week of the 2014 season, and by the oddsmakers’ estimates, it sure looked like No. 24 was all but guaranteed.

Ohio State was a hefty 14.5-point home favorite, but had a dismal offensive showing and lost outright to the Spartans, 17-14. That put a severe dent in any chance the Buckeyes (10-1 SU, 4-7 ATS) might have at not just the Big Ten title, but a return trip to the four-team national championship playoff.

Now, in the regular-season finale, Ohio State has to travel to archrival Michigan, where the Wolverines will be eager to add to the Buckeyes’ newfound misery. Michigan (9-2 SU, 6-5 ATS) has bounced back since suffering its own stunning loss to Michigan State, winning four in a row SU, including Saturday’s 28-16 victory as a 3.5-point chalk at Penn State.

Johnny Avello, executive director of race and sports for Wynn Las Vegas, said both teams’ situations – both still have an outside shot to reach the Big Ten title game – made it tough to handicap this game. Avello sent Michigan out as a 2.5-point favorite.

“I looked at this game a few times trying to decide what to make this opening number,” Avello said. “Ohio State is probably out of the playoff mix and somewhat deflated after the Michigan State loss, but this is still a huge rivalry and recruiting game.”

Iowa (-3) at Nebraska

Arguably as stunning as Ohio State’s loss is the fact that Iowa (10-0 SU, 6-5 ATS) represents the Big Ten’s best shot to make the four-team playoff. On Saturday, the Hawkeyes eased past Purdue 40-20, though they failed to cash as a big 23-point home favorite.

Nebraska (5-6 SU, 6-5 ATS) has had an awful season by its standards, but did pull off a home upset of Michigan State earlier this month and enters the regular-season finale off a bye week. The Huskers followed up the 39-38 win over the Spartans as a 3.5-point home underdog with a 31-14 Nov. 14 victory at Rutgers laying 7.5 points.

The border rivals are on a slightly shorter week, playing Friday.

“This is not the easiest of regular-season closing games for an undefeated Iowa team,” said Avello, noting the Huskers’ three home losses came by a total of nine points. “Nebraska is 3-3 at home this season, and when you take a closer look at the scores of those games, you can sense this is going to be a close one.”

Oklahoma (-4) at Oklahoma State

It’s the Bedlam Game, and it could certainly create just that with regard to the four-team playoff picture. Oklahoma State had everything pointing in its favor – an unbeaten SU record and all key opponents having to travel to Stillwater. But the Cowboys (10-1 SU, 6-5 ATS) got outgunned Saturday, going off as a 3-point home pup to Baylor and losing 45-35.

Oklahoma, meanwhile, has a chance to play itself into the playoff. The Sooners (10-1 SU, 8-3 ATS) have won six in a row SU, failing to cover only once in that stretch, in Saturday’s 30-29 victory over Texas Christian as a stout 18-point home fave.

“If Oklahoma wins this, I believe they have a very good shot at the playoff,” Avello said. “It is concerning that you will get lapses from this Sooners group during the 60-minute timetable, and it happened again this week as a Trevone Boykin-less TCU crawled back in the game and almost spoiled the Sooners’ season.”

Notre Dame at Stanford (-3)

The Fighting Irish (10-1 SU, 7-4 ATS) have held it together with duct tape and bailing wire this year, and might just find their way into the four-team playoff if they can do that for one more week. Notre Dame had five turnovers in the first three quarters Saturday against Boston College, but mustered a 19-16 victory giving 14.5 points on a “neutral” field – Boston’s Fenway Park.

Stanford can play big spoiler and wrap up its spot in the Pac-12 title game by beating the Irish. The Cardinal (9-2 SU, 8-3 ATS) bounced back from an upset home loss to Oregon by beating California 35-22 as a 10-point home chalk Saturday.

“If Notre Dame turns the ball over five times this week, it will be lights out for the Irish,” Avello said. “They did however survive, and now this may be the last hurdle to become part of the four-team playoff. Stanford has different plans and will try to avenge last year’s 17-14 loss at South Bend.”

Texas Tech and host Texas will each have their hands full trying to stop the other's offense during Thursday night's Big 12 matchup. The Red Raiders own one of the nation's top passing offenses while the Longhorns have a strong - but banged up - ground game.

Texas' top two running backs - D'Onta Foreman (finger) and Johnathan Gray (foot) - are both unlikely as the Longhorns come out of a bye week. Texas will also likely be without freshman offensive guard Patrick Vahe (knee) against a Red Raiders defense that is giving up 259.9 rushing yards. Texas Tech has gaudy numbers through the air - quarterback Patrick Mahomes II is ranked fourth nationally with an average of 355.5 yards and 31 touchdowns - but DeAndre Washington has been a solid rusher in the Big 12. The Red Raiders are trying to win at Texas for the first time since 1997 after losing the past eight visits by an average of 26.3 points.

Buffalo is a sizable favorite versus UMass but is playing for a chance at a bowl game next month.

Team to Watch: Buffalo Bulls

This week: -6.5 vs UMass Minutemen

The Buffalo Bulls currently sit at 5-6 SU and heading into the last week of the season they need one more win to become Bowl eligible. The UMass Minutemen have severely underperformed this season. They’re not getting consistent production from QB Blake Frohnapel and their defense is currently one of the worst in the country. The Bulls are led by veteran QB Joe Licata and he has a legitimate NFL-caliber receiver in Ron Willoughby, both of which should be able to shred the rather porous defense of the Minutemen.

Buffalo has struggled to find its offense the last couple of weeks, however, this is a matchup that we believe will allow them to find their footing. It's rare to see the Bulls favored by this much but we believe in this situation it's warranted as they leave everything they have on the field to get themselves to a Bowl game.

Team to Beware of: Western Michigan Broncos

This week: +8 vs Toledo Rockets

The Western Michigan Broncos have had somewhat of a down season after their impressive run last year. They came into the season highly touted and, while they have performed well given their 6-5 season, they have fallen short each time they have faced an upper-level conference opponent. They weren't able to hang with either Northern Illinois or Bowling Green, which are the true benchmarks of the conference.

Toledo is 9-1 on the season with its lone loss coming after allowing a fourth-quarter touchdown with under two mins to play against Northern Illinois. Since that loss, the Rockets have been nearly unstoppable and shutdown an explosive Bowling Green offense on the road in their last contest. The Rockets have their sights sets on a division championship and while the Broncos will likely put up some points, the Rockets defense will get the stops needed to come away with the win and cover.

Total Team: Western Kentucky Hilltoppers

This week: 63.5 vs Marshall Thundering Herd

This should be an extremely entertaining game for the fans to watch. Both teams come into this contest 9-2 on the season with the winner staking claim to the C-USA East title. While these teams have ultra-impressive offenses and the ability to put points on the board in a hurry, the total set for this game has all of the makings of a defensive battle.

Both defenses are highly underrated but it's important to know that the Thundering Herd have only given up more than 30 points just once this season. Western Kentucky will get its points, but we don't believe this will be the high-scoring, back-and-forth contest that many are expecting and will instead be more of a showcase in the defenses of both sides, keeping this total just Under.

The Bears lead the nation in scoring (53.8) and total offense (644.1 yards) and have continued to click despite losing junior Seth Russell to a season-ending neck injury and now Stidham. "The playbook was open, and we were dialing up the same things we were with Seth and Jarrett, because he’s good and he can deliver," coach Art Briles said at a press conference of Johnson, who passed for 138 yards and two touchdowns against Oklahoma State. "He can do it. That part of it was not surprising at all." Johnson was playing receiver until Russell's injury on Oct. 24 and the Bears could use a big performance from him to keep their College Football Playoff aspirations alive. The Horned Frogs average 42.9 points and 588.2 yards per game but have lost senior standout receiver Josh Doctson (wrist) for the season and senior Bram Kohlhausen will start at quarterback if Boykin can't play.

Rain, thunderstorms forecast for Mizzou-Arkansas

According to weather forecasts, there is a 99 percent possibility of rain and thunderstorms in Fayetteville when the Arkansas Razorbacks host the Missouri Tigers Friday afternoon.

Temperatures in Fayetteville are expected to be in the high-30s with wind blowing toward the south end zone at around seven miles per hour.

Books opened the Razorbacks as 13.5-point home favorites, but that has since moved to -14. The total for Friday's contest is down to 45.5 from the opening 46.

Best ATS wager in college football in action Friday

The Toledo Rockets boast a couple of incredible records so far this season: 9-1 straight up and a college football-best 8-1-1 against the spread. The Rockets and their backers will look for another notch in the win column when they host the Western Michigan Broncos Friday afternoon.

Over bets hot in Civil War rivalry game

When the Oregon Ducks and Oregon State Beavers meet up for the Civil War rivalry game, it usually results in a payday for Over bettors.

The Over has gone 11-2 in the last 13 meetings between the two Beaver State schools, though the Under did cash last year in a 47-19 Ducks win (U 66.5).

The Civil War game has routinely seen totals in the 60's in recent years, but, as it stands right now, books are offering a total of 70 after opening the game at 68.5.
