CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) Nate Britt matched his career high with 17 points and No. 1 North Carolina gradually pulled away in the second half to beat Fairfield 92-65 on Sunday.

Joel Berry II added 15 points for the Tar Heels (2-0), who won their 14th consecutive home opener. But UNC followed its 24-point win over Temple in Friday's opener with an unimpressive showing full of missed free throws and leaky defense.

The Tar Heels struggled to put away a team that went 7-24 last season, leading 40-32 at halftime. They didn't put the game away until the final 10 minutes against the Stags (0-2), who hit 10 3-pointers that kept them hanging around longer than expected.

The Tar Heels are playing without preseason Atlantic Coast Conference co-player of the year Marcus Paige for the first few weeks of the season due to a broken right hand.

Marcus Gilbert scored 25 points for Fairfield.

The game was part of the Naismith Memorial Hall of Fame Classic, though it wasn't part of the event's elimination rounds.

    NO. 17 WISCONSIN 92, SIENA 65

MADISON, Wis. (AP) - Bronson Koenig scored 23 points and Vitto Brown added a career-high 16 for No. 17 Wisconsin.

Nigel Hayes, limited to 5 minutes in the first half because of foul trouble, added 14 points for the Badgers (1-1).

Nico Clareth led Siena (0-2) with 21 points, while Marquis Wright added 17.

Zak Showalter's putback dunk of a missed 3-pointer just before the first-half buzzer put the Badgers up 43-28.

The Badgers looked like a different team offensively after hitting less than 36 percent of their shots from the field and 64 percent from the free throw line and allowing Western Illinois to shoot 54 percent from the field in Friday night's loss. With Koenig hitting 8 of 14 and Brown 5 of 10, the Badgers shot better than 58 percent from the field on Sunday and held the Saints to 39 percent.

    NO. 23 PURDUE 107, VERMONT 79

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (AP) - Dakota Mathias scored 17 points and Isaac Haas added 16 in Purdue's victory in a game in the Naismith Memorial Hall of Fame Tipoff Classic.

Caleb Swanigan added 14 points and 13 rebounds, Vince Edwards scored 14 points, Rapheal Davis had 12 and Kendall Stephens scored 11 for Purdue (2-0).

Stephens and Haas scored 11 points each in a 60-point first half. Purdue's 18 3-pointers set a school record, besting the 16 the Boilermakers made on Feb. 7, 1998, in a Big Ten victory at Ohio State.

Edwards made the record-breaking 3-pointer from the left wing with 8:27 remaining, giving Purdue a 91-64 lead.

The Boilermakers, who defeated North Carolina A&T 81-40 in their Friday night opener, made 10 of 19 3-point attempts in the first half against Vermont, with six players making at least one.

Ernie Duncan led Vermont (0-2) with 18 points, and Trae Bell-Haynes added 17.

Road favorites cashing at a big rate this season

Heading into Sunday's NHL schedule, backing the road favorite straight up has been a great wager whenever that opportunity presents itself. Visiting faves have posted a record of 46-22 prior to the puck dropping on Sunday's game, good enough for a win rate of just under 68 percent.

This trend is true only for straight up wagers and not puckline bets. When it comes to the puckline, away favorites have gone just 21-43.

Season to date, favorites have gone 147-105 (58.33 percent) while home favorites have posted a record of 101-83 (54.89 percent).

There are just a pair of games on a typically light Sunday around the NHL with no opportunity to bet this spot. Keep an eye on Monday's board, however, as there are six games on the docket.

NHL roundup: Zuccarello pushes Rangers past Leafs

NEW YORK-- Mats Zuccarello capped a three-point night with a goal with less than a minute left in regulation as the New York Rangers topped the Toronto Maple Leafs 4-3 on Sunday night in Madison Square Garden.

Ryan McDonagh, Derek Stepan and Derick Brassard also scored for New York, which has won nine in a row. Antti Raanta stopped 23 of 26 shots.

Peter Holland, Joffrey Lupul and Dion Phaneuf scored for Toronto, which had a three game winning streak come to an end. Jonathan Bernier made 26 saves.

        Blackhawks 4, Flames 1

CHICAGO -- Patrick Kane continued his torrid point-scoring streak with a goal and an assist and Chicago used a second-period offensive barrage to beat Calgary.

Scott Darling made 25 saves as the Blackhawks won for the second time in as many days and for the third time in four games. The Flames, meanwhile, lost for the third times in four games.

Marian Hossa, Artemi Panarin and Jonathan Toews also scored for the Blackhawks while David Jones scored the Flames' lone goal.

Preview: Coyotes (9-7) at Islanders (9-6)

          Date: November 16, 2015 7:00 PM EDT

It took a trip to California for the New York Islanders to put the numbers on the scoreboard they were expecting during a home-heavy stretch prior to spending four days across the country.

The Arizona Coyotes began their trip by allowing their most goals in nearly three weeks.

New York looks to bring that scoring touch back to Brooklyn and win back-to-back games for the first time this month when it faces Arizona on Monday night.

The Islanders (9-6-3) scored two goals or fewer each time during a 1-3-2 stretch before leaving to face San Jose, Los Angeles and Anaheim last week. They beat the Sharks 4-2 on Tuesday and fell 2-1 to the Kings two nights later despite a 32-22 shot advantage before defeating the Ducks 4-1 on Friday.

Frans Nielsen scored twice for New York, which hadn't scored four since beating Calgary on Oct. 26, the last time they won a second straight contest.

The Islanders are 8-1-0 when scoring at least three goals.

"Goals have been hard to come by for everyone a little bit here. To put four on the board was good for us," said Anders Lee, who had two assists. "Especially on the road, far away from home at the end of the trip here against a good team."

The Islanders began the season scoring at least three in seven of their first nine before going into a bit of drought. They're still struggling with the man advantage, going 1 for 21 over their last seven.

'The important thing for us is to build toward playing that type of game consistently, like we did last year,' forward Cal Clutterbuck said. 'I think it's taken us a little bit longer this year. But these last three games have been a pretty good indication that we're starting to find it.'

New York has scored fewer than three in each game during a 1-2-1 stretch at home and look to bust out against Arizona (9-7-1), which began a four-game trip with a 5-2 loss to Columbus on Saturday.

The Coyotes had their three-game winning streak snapped and hadn't given up that many goals since losing 6-0 to Boston on Oct. 27. They had won four of their previous five on the road.

"We know we've done a good job on the road. (Saturday) wasn't one of those good jobs," coach Dave Tippett told the team's official website. "You learn a lot about your team in certain situations and that was one of them."

Anthony Duclair had a goal and an assist and Oliver Ekman-Larsson also scored, giving him two goals and three assists during a five-game point streak.

"I'm feeling pretty good about my game," Ekman-Larsson said. "I'm playing with a lot of confidence and it feels good with the puck. I think me and 'Stoney' (Michael Stone) are playing better together as a unit."

Mike Smith had a rough game, though, allowing five goals on 21 shots after posting a 2.34 goals-against average during a 3-1-0 stretch. He's 1-3-0 with a 3.85 GAA against the Islanders since 2013 and lost the last meeting 5-1 on Feb. 24.

Nielsen had a goal and an assist and Lee also scored in that matchup for New York, which could counter with Jaroslav Halak in this contest. Halak, who rested Saturday, has lost three straight starts despite a 2.39 GAA in those games.

Preview: Ducks (4-8) at Hurricanes (6-9)

            Date: November 16, 2015 7:00 PM EDT

While frustration is beginning to bubble among the Anaheim Ducks, it may reach a boiling point for the Carolina Hurricanes with another home loss.

The Ducks can end their struggles on the road and add to Carolina's heightening concern Monday night in a matchup between two scuffling teams.

Anaheim (5-8-4) opened November with four consecutive wins but is suddenly trying to avoid its third losing streak of at least four games.

The Ducks followed their win streak with three consecutive home losses last week in which they allowed at least four goals on fewer than 30 shots. They left some points on the table in back-to-back 4-3 overtime losses to Arizona and Edmonton before capping the slide with Friday's ugly 4-1 defeat to the New York Islanders.

"Any time you lose by three in your building, it's never a fun feeling," defenseman Cam Fowler told the team's official website. "We weren't even really satisfied with the couple of points we've gotten in the last couple of games.

"It's a disappointing feeling. Not much to be explained."

The answer will have to come on the road for the Ducks, who open this four-game trip with a 5-0-1 record against the Hurricanes since Feb. 8, 2012.

Anaheim, however, is 1-5-1 away from home this season, though its most recent win came 1-0 at San Jose on Nov. 7. The Ducks have been shut out three times away from home, a key reason for their league-low 1.65 goals per game.

With captain Ryan Getzlaf's goal drought at 13 games and Jakob Silfverberg's at 17, Anaheim hopes some youth can add energy.

The Ducks recalled top prospect Nick Ritchie and center Michael Sgarbossa from the AHL on Saturday among a series of moves. The 19-year-old Ritchie, the 10th overall pick in the 2014 draft, has nine goals in 12 games in his first pro season with San Diego.

Ritchie could make his NHL debut against Hurricanes backup goaltender Eddie Lack, who will make his first start since Nov. 6. Lack has struggled in four appearances in place of Cam Ward, but he went 2-0-1 with a 1.58 goals-against average and .941 save percentage in three starts against Anaheim last season.

Carolina (6-9-2) has lost five of six, going 1-2-2 at home in that span. The latest two losses both came 3-2 in overtime against Minnesota and Philadelphia. The Hurricanes coughed up an early 2-0 lead against the Flyers on Saturday to fall to 2-4-2 at PNC Arena.

"It's frustrating," center Eric Staal told the team's official website. "We're trying to come away with a W in the third period, and it felt like we were hanging on a little bit instead of making plays."

The Hurricanes, playing their third on a five-game homestand, have scored just eight goals in their last five overall and have averaged 2.25 per game in eight at home.

They will likely play without defenseman Ryan Murphy after he suffered a concussion Saturday. Murphy was hurt when he was illegally boarded by Ryan White, who was penalized. Murphy will go through the league's concussion protocol and is considered day to day.

Frederik Andersen, who surrendered all four goals in Anaheim's last two overtime losses, has two career wins against Carolina despite allowing seven combined goals in those games.

Preview: Lightning (8-8) at Panthers (6-7)

              Date: November 16, 2015 7:30 PM EDT

The Florida Panthers were ecstatic after stealing a victory away from the rival Tampa Bay Lightning, who were deflated by the defeat.

These teams are in completely opposite moods heading into Monday night's rematch in Sunrise following a thriller which featured four lead changes and two penalty shots.

Tampa Bay (8-8-3) snapped a third-period tie on Vladislav Namestnikov's second goal of the game and seemed headed for victory Saturday at home, but winger Ryan Callahan was penalized for a delay of game after firing the puck over the glass, and Florida capitalized on Aaron Ekblad's tying goal with 38 seconds left.

Brandon Pirri scored the lone shootout goal to cap the Panthers' 5-4 victory.

"Guys are excited after a win like that," Ekblad said. "Confidence is what it's all about. It's a good rivalry, the Battle of Florida. Sometimes that gets overlooked."

Pirri converted a penalty shot in the second period, while Steven Stamkos had an attempt in overtime stopped by Roberto Luongo, who recorded his 406th victory to move one shy of tying Glenn Hall for eighth place on the all-time list.

"It's a good character win for the boys," Luongo said. "I really wanted to make sure that I made the saves when I had to."

The Lightning missed a chance to win back-to-back games for the first time since a 3-0-0 start. They are 3-6-2 in their last 11.

"We did a lot of good things," coach Jon Cooper said. "We had the lead right to the bitter end. It's tough. Guys are battling. We just don't have a ton to show for it."

Tampa Bay fell to 14-2-2 in the last 18 overall meetings. Florida (7-7-3) now seeks only its second win in the previous nine matchups at home.

"We beat a real good team in their building," coach Gerard Gallant said. "We play them again Monday night, but we've got to be better so we need to keep getting better and getting points."

The physical contest saw the Panthers' Shawn Thornton and Lightning's J.T. Brown both draw misconduct penalties for an altercation in the third period.

Namestnikov ended a 10-game goal drought in his second straight contest alongside Stamkos and Callahan on the top line. Stamkos assisted on both of Namestnikov's goals to give him seven points in seven games.

Tampa Bay has one of the league's worst offenses with 2.4 goals per game.

"We can't give up that many goals obviously," Stamkos said. "Hopefully the offense can build some confidence on this one."

Florida's attack may be bolstered Monday since center Aleksander Barkov could return from missing 10 games with a hand injury.

Panthers defenseman Dmitry Kulikov is expected to miss his first game after he exited Saturday with a lower-body injury.

Lightning goalie Ben Bishop made 19 saves Saturday to drop to 6-1-1 with a 2.17 goals-against average in eight starts against the Panthers. He is 1-5-1 with a 1.86 GAA in his last seven starts.

Preview: Canucks (6-6) at Canadiens (13-3)

                Date: November 16, 2015 7:30 PM EDT

Having shown plenty of resiliency during Carey Price's absence, the Montreal Canadiens now must bounce back from their worst loss of the season.

The Canadiens return to the ice Monday night against the visiting Vancouver Canucks in a matchup of teams that have each received shaky goaltending during two-game losing streaks.

Montreal (13-3-2) continued to thrive with Price first sidelined by a lower-body injury, going 4-0-1 while yielding eight goals in its first five games since the reigning Hart and Vezina Trophy winner's last outing on Oct. 29. The Canadiens have allowed nine in their last two after being routed 6-1 by surging Colorado on Saturday for their first regulation home loss.

Mike Condon was pulled after two periods upon permitting four goals on 11 shots. The rookie posted a 1.60 goals-against average while starting five straight times following Price's injury, then made 31 saves in a 4-3 shootout defeat Wednesday at Pittsburgh.

'We're not going to start blaming anyone,' Canadiens coach Michel Therrien said. 'Condon's been very good for us since the start of the season."

Vancouver (7-6-5) continues a season-high seven-game road trip with Ryan Miller in a more prolonged slump. The veteran netminder is 0-4-1 with a 3.46 GAA over a five-game stretch in which he's surrendered three goals or more each time.

Miller had 36 saves during Saturday's 4-2 setback at Toronto that dropped the Canucks to 1-3-1 on the trek.

He was quite sharp in the Canadiens' Oct. 27 visit to Vancouver, however, stopping 25 shots in a 5-1 victory. Price allowed all five goals, including two from rookie Jared McCann.

The Canucks also held Montreal's dangerous top line of Max Pacioretty, Tomas Plekanec and Brendan Gallagher without a point. The trio enters Monday each owning four-game point streaks, with Gallagher totaling three goals and three assists and Plekanec two goals and three assists.

All three had goals in a 3-1 home win over Vancouver on Dec. 9, 2014, the Canucks' fifth loss in their last six visits to Montreal.

Vancouver's Jannik Hansen has four goals and three assists over his last seven after scoring Saturday. He had a second goal disallowed early in the third period after being ruled to have deliberately kicked the puck, one of several near-misses on a night when the Canucks recorded a season-high 45 shots.

"We made way too many mistakes," captain Henrik Sedin told the NHL's official website. "We were sloppy. We didn't get anything going. We're still making way too many mistakes, and we've got to stop talking about that we're a young team. We have to simplify things. Five-on-5 we have to get away from those turnovers and easy goals for the opponent."

Montreal outshot the Avalanche 40-24 and its 3.50 goals per game ranks second in the NHL. The Canadiens own the league's third-best power play as well at 25.4 percent and had scored at least once in those situations in seven straight prior to Saturday.

The Canucks have allowed one or more power-play goals in six straight but were 2 for 2 on the penalty kill in last month's meeting. They've played the last two without top defensive center Brandon Sutter, who's questionable with an undisclosed injury.

Preview: Red Wings (8-8) at Senators (5-5)

                  Date: November 16, 2015 7:30 PM EDT

Aside from their win in Ottawa last month, the Detroit Red Wings have often looked anything but dynamic offensively. Even the return of one of their stars hasn't given them much of a boost.

The Red Wings look to avoid a third consecutive loss since getting Pavel Datsyuk back when they face the Senators in Monday night's rematch.

Detroit (8-8-1) has scored two or fewer goals in 11 of 13 games and been limited to one in seven contests. Justin Abdelkader scored for the Red Wings in a 3-1 loss at Boston on Saturday on a third-period power play.

Datsyuk was held without a point for the second straight game since his return from offseason ankle surgery. He is two goals shy of 300 for his career.

"We've just got to get more on the inside, play with a little more grit. We've got to bear down in practice, and bear down in games when we get our chances," captain Henrik Zetterberg said. "We're creating chances but we're not finding the back of the net."

Detroit had its highest offensive output of the season in a 5-3 win over the Senators on Oct. 31. Tomas Tatar and Gustav Nyquist scored power-play goals to give the Red Wings a 2-0 lead, and Detroit wouldn't trail in the game.

The Senators (8-5-4) also struggled mightily to contain Nashville in a 7-5 loss Nov. 10 but have done a mostly solid job defensively in their other six games this month.

Ottawa has allowed two or fewer goals in four contests while going 3-1-2 in November but couldn't get enough scoring Saturday in a 2-1 shootout loss to the New York Rangers.

"We're playing a much better team game now," defenseman Cody Ceci said. "It was a pretty devastating shootout loss, but we were in the game the whole time. It was a really good hockey game so we just need to play the same way."

Captain Erik Karlsson scored his third goal in as many games. He also has two assists in that stretch after going goalless for the first 14 games.

Kyle Turris has scored in both meetings with Detroit this season, the first being a 3-1 road win Oct. 30, but his status is uncertain for this one because of an undisclosed injury. Turris, Ottawa's leader with eight goals, has played in every game in each of the past two seasons.

Senators defenseman Jared Cowen is considered doubtful because of an undisclosed injury.

Bobby Ryan has also scored in both matchups with the Wings. Karlsson has no goals and three assists in his last three games against Detroit.

Ottawa has gone 6 for 12 on the power play in its last four contests but has given up a short-handed goal in each. The Senators have one of the league's worst penalty killing percentages at 73.8 and have given up three goals on Detroit's eight power plays.

One of those power-play scorers, Nyquist, has four goals and two assists in a five-game point streak against Ottawa. Zetterberg has three goals and four assists in his last six matchups, including two assists Oct. 31.

Detroit has recorded six wins in its past seven visits to Ottawa.

Preview: Jets (8-8) at Blues (11-5)

                    Date: November 16, 2015 8:00 PM EDT

The St. Louis Blues might be experiencing their worst stretch thus far this season, though it's nowhere near what's going on with the Winnipeg Jets.

The Central Division foes will try to recover Monday night in St. Louis, and both need to get things right in their own zone.

The Blues (11-5-1) have dropped two straight in regulation for the first time this season, but the Jets (8-8-2) are on a 0-4-1 skid. After Saturday's 7-0 loss in Nashville, Winnipeg has given up 18 goals in the first three of a four-game trip and is tied for 27th in the NHL with 3.22 goals allowed per game.

"I don't think that you are going to find a guy in here who is happy about the way anything went tonight," captain Andrew Ladd said. "We'll stick together and find a way to get out of this little funk that we are in, and at the end of it, we will be a better team because of it."

The Jets have given up four power-play goals on nine chances in the last two games, while their own power play is 1 for 22 in seven games this month.

"We've got to build some confidence back," coach Paul Maurice told the team's official website. "Confidence is earned first. ... Get some simple parts to our game and we can grab some confidence and build from there."

St. Louis is probably the wrong team to try to start that against. The Blues opened the season series with a 4-2 win at Winnipeg on Oct. 18, giving them eight wins in the last 10 meetings while limiting the Jets to 1.80 goals per game. Vladimir Tarasenko scored twice and has three goals and an assist in the last three matchups.

Tarasenko also scored twice in Saturday's 4-2 home loss to Chicago, giving him three goals in two games, but the Blues have lost those contests by a 10-5 total. Even so, coach Ken Hitchcock isn't entirely down on how his team is playing.

"We were really playing well and we made some critical errors," Hitchcock told the team's official website. "We didn't get a clear once, we took a penalty on the backcheck and then we made a couple mistakes on the penalty kill, didn't get to a loose puck and then we jumped into a pile ... (it's) disappointing.

"If we expect to win, we're going to have to make big plays at the right time. That's what that team's done we played today. They make big plays at the right time. That's why they win championships. If we want a piece of the pie in this division, in this conference, we're going to have to have more people make big plays at the right time."

All the scoring against the Blues and Jets has made for some ugly numbers from their goaltenders.

Jake Allen starts his fifth straight for the Blues after allowing six goals on 31 shots in the last two, though he had two shutouts before that. He didn't face the Jets last month but is 1-1-0 against them with a 1.52 goals-against average and .951 save percentage.

Winnipeg's Ondrej Pavelec has given up four goals in each of his last three games with a 5.27 GAA and .831 save percentage. He also allowed four against the Blues in the first meeting, though he's 2-1-0 with a 1.63 GAA and .952 save percentage against them.

                      Conference Rankings

Losing Baylor from the ranks of the unbeaten means the Big 12's hopes for its first bid into the College Football Playoff hinges on having a happy Sooner state by this time next weekend. If Oklahoma State defeats Baylor and Oklahoma handles TCU, the Bedlam game could serve as the de facto conference championship. Stanford's loss to Oregon would certainly seem to hurt Notre Dame's hopes of remaining in the Top four when all is said and done, but there's still plenty to be determined in the coming weeks.

-- If you were holding an 'under' (54.5) ticket in Texas-San Antonio vs. Charlotte, a 49ers field goal with 1:11 ruined your plans. Charlotte forced overtime and ended up falling by three in the extra session.

-- Indiana moneyline bettors (ML +450), it was like losing twice Saturday. The Hoosiers allowed the game-tying touchdown to Michigan on the final play of regulation, and then slipped up in the extra session by a 48-41 score.

-- After a total of 31 points in the first half, it appeared Kentucky-Vanderbilt was headed for an 'over' (41.5). However, a third-quarter touchdown with 1:06 to go was the final score of the game to crush 'over' tickets.

-- Appalachian State booted a 31-yard field goal with 3:00 left to make it 47-20 over Idaho. There aren't many people who paid attention to that score, but it pushed the total 'over' (65.5). Tough break.

-- Memphis moneyline bettors looked to be in great shape with the Tigers up 34-14 at 14:56 of the fourth quarter. However, Houston rattled off 21 points in the final quarter to win 35-34, including the game-winning score with 1:27 to go.

                          ESPN's Herbstreit apologizes to Baylor
                          November 15, 2015

WACO, Texas (AP) ESPN commentator Kirk Herbstreit is apologizing to Baylor and Terrell Burt after accusing the senior safety of faking an injury during the broadcast of the Bears' loss to Oklahoma.

Herbstreit posted the apology Sunday in a series of three posts on his Twitter account, saying he took ''full responsibility'' and wanted to ''apologize sincerely.''

With the Sooners lining up for a play with 9:44 left in their 44-34 victory Saturday night, Baylor cornerback Ryan Reid suddenly ran toward Burt and motioned for him to get down to the ground.

What was unknown at the time was that Burt had sprained his ankle on the kickoff before the start of that drive.

Herbstreit used the terms ''bush league'' and ''unethical'' for what he thought was a fake injury.
