          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sunday Night Football betting preview: Eagles at Cowboys
          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The underdog has gone 6-0 against the spread in the previous six contests between the Eagles and Cowboys.

Philadelphia Eagles at Dallas Cowboys (+3, 44)

The Dallas Cowboys have lost five games in a row but still have a pulse in the division race thanks to the pedestrian state of the NFC East. That being said, the Cowboys are pretty much in a must-win situation when they host the division-rival Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday night in a matchup that marks the return of DeMarco Murray to Dallas.

Murray, who led the league in rushing with 1,845 yards for the Cowboys last season before he was allowed to walk as a free agent, had a dismal performance in a 20-10 loss to Dallas in September, rushing for two yards on 13 yards. "There (are) no regrets on my part and no regrets on their part," Murray said. "I respect those guys. Great organization, spent a lot of time there, but I'm here now." Dallas quarterback Tony Romo suffered a broken collarbone in the Week 2 win over the Eagles and his team hasn't won since. While Philadelphia is coming off a bye, Dallas' losing streak reached five with a 13-12 home defeat to Seattle.

          TV: 8:30 p.m. ET, NBC.

LINE HISTORY: The Eagles are now 3-point road faves after opening -2.5. The total is down to 43.5 from the opening 44.5.

          INJURY REPORT:

Eagles - RB Ryan Mathews (Probable, groin), DE Brandon Blair (Probable, groin), WR Nelson Agholor (Probable, ankle), LB Kiko Alonso (Probable, knee), LB DeMeco Ryans (Questionable, hamstring), T Jason Peters (Out, back), Travis Long (I-R, knee), T Andrew Gardner (I-R, foot), K Cody Parkey (I-R, groin), C David Molk (I-R, bicep), DB JaCorey Shepherd (I-R, knee).

Cowboys - QB Matt Cassel (Probable, knee), WR Dez Bryant (Questionable, foot), S Barry Church (Questionable, leg), WR Brice Butler (Questionable, hamstring), RB Lance Dunbar (I-R, knee), QB Tony Romo (I-R, collarbone), DT Terrell McClain (I-R, toe), OL Chaz Green (I-R, hip), LB Mark Nzeocha (I-R, knee), CB Orlando Scandrick (I-R, knee).

          WEATHER: N/A

          POWER RANKINGS: Eagles (-1.0) - Cowboys (+3.5) + home field (-3.0) = Eagles -1.5

WHAT CAPPERS SAY: "Offseason acquisitions are not panning out. Sam Bradford?'s 76.4 QB rating ranks No. 30 out of 32 NFL starting quarterbacks and DeMarco Murray has only 307 rushing yards at 3.5 per carry. The Cowboys moribund offense without Tony Romo didn?'t get into the end zone on Sunday, held to 220 yards and 14 first downs; negating a stellar defensive effort." Covers Expert Teddy Covers.

WHAT BOOKS SAY: "We opened the Eagles as 3-point faves on the road in Dallas and have not moved off this number as we have seen good two-way action. We did adjust the juice on the line moving from Eagles -3 (-105) to -3 (-110) and the Cowboys +3 (-115) to Cowboys +3 (-110). The Eagles are seeing over 65 percent of the action to cover the 3 point spread."

ABOUT THE EAGLES (3-4 SU, 3-4 ATS, 1-6 O/U): Philadelphia appeared to turn a corner with a pair of decisive wins over New Orleans and the New York Giants, but the momentum stalled in a 27-16 loss at Carolina as Sam Bradford was limited to 205 yards and failed to throw a TD pass for the first time. Murray has elevated his game with 260 rushing yards over the past three games, but he has been outperformed by fellow free-agent signee Ryan Mathews, who has run for 35 more yards on 32 fewer carries. Bradford has tossed six interceptions in the past three games and was picked off twice by the Cowboys in Week 2.

ABOUT THE COWBOYS (2-5 SU, 2-5 ATS, 3-4 O/U): Dallas' backfield is in disarray as Murray's expected replacement, Joseph Randle, was released this week amid reports of behavioral issues and the fact that he was faced a league-mandated suspension. Darren McFadden erupted for 152 yards in a loss to the Giants on Oct. 25, but he was held to 64 yards on 20 carries by a Seattle defense that also spoiled the return of wideout Dez Bryant, who had two catches for 12 yards in his first game since suffering a broken bone in his foot. Matt Cassel has thrown for 324 yards with one TD and three picks in two starts.

          TRENDS:

          * Under is 4-1 in the last five meetings.
          * Road team is 7-1 ATS in their last eight meetings.
          * Underdog is 6-0 ATS in their last six meetings.
          * Eagles are 7-1 ATS in their last eight games in November.

CONSENSUS: Sixty-one percent of users are backing the Eagles.

Essential Week 9 betting notes for NFL Sunday

The Raiders have won back-to-back games SU and ATS heading into Sunday's meeting with the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Green Bay Packers at Carolina Panthers (+2.5, 46.5)

            * Green Bay’s offensive struggles came to a head last week, when they managed only 50 yards through the air and 90 on the ground. Once one of the most prolific passing attacks in the league, the Packers have topped 300 yards in the air only once this season - though Aaron Rodgers has been efficient, completing 67.6 percent of his passes with 15 touchdowns against two interceptions.

            * Carolina looks to continue the best start in franchise history and maintain the inside track for the top seed in the NFC playoffs, while Green Bay hopes to bounce back from an ugly 29-10 loss at Denver.

Washington Redskins at New England Patriots (-14, 52)

            * The Redskins have faced two other teams from the AFC East so far this season, losing to the Miami Dolphins 17-10 as a 4-point home dog in Week 1 and 34-20 as a 7.5-point road dog at the New York Jets in Week 6.

            * The Patriots will be a double-digit favorite for the second time this season after covering as 14.5-point favorites against the Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 3. The Pats are just 3-8 ATS in their last 11 games as a double digit fave, however.

Tennessee Titans at New Orleans Saints (-7.5, 48)

            * Tennessee has lost 16 of its last 17 games dating back to last season and is 5-12 ATS in those games.

            * The Saints have been a very hot wager of late, posting a record of 4-1-1 ATS in their last six games heading into Week 9. They managed a push in a 52-49 win as 3-point home faves versus the New York Giants last week.

Miami Dolphins at Buffalo Bills (-2.5, 44)

            * The Dolphins have struggled to cash betting slips within the division, losing six-straight games against the spread versus the AFC East including an 0-3 SU and ATS mark versus the division this season.

            * Tyrod Taylor will return under center for the Bills Sunday. The Bills went 0-2 without the Virginia Tech product in the lineup, but went 3-2 SU and ATS with him.

St. Louis Rams at Minnesota Vikings (-1, 40)

            * Aside from running back Toddy Gurley, St. Louis' best weapon has been its defense - which has yielded just four field goals in the last two weeks. The under has gone 3-0 in the past three Rams' games thanks to their stout defense.

            * Stefon Diggs has provided some punch to Minnesota's ailing passing game, amassing 419 yards and two touchdowns in his last four contests. The Vikings have covered the spread in each of those four games.

Jacksonville Jaguars at New York Jets (-8, 42)

            * The Jaguars have been off since edging Buffalo in London two weeks ago to snap a four-game losing streak. Quarterback Blake Bortles rebounded from a costly interception, his eighth of the season, to toss a game-winning score to Allen Hurns in the final minutes. Bortles is tied for fifth in the league with 15 touchdown passes, but he'll face the NFL's second-ranked defense this week.

            * New York Jets coach Todd Bowles gave Ryan Fitzpatrick the thumbs up to start at quarterback when they host the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday. Both Fitzpatrick, who suffered torn ligaments in his non-throwing thumb, and his backup, Geno Smith, were injured in last week's drubbing at Oakland, the Jets' second loss in a row.

Oakland Raiders at Pittsburgh Steelers (-4.5, 48)

            * The Raiders have not reached the halfway point of the season with a record better than .500 since 2001, when they were 6-2 and went on to win the AFC West with a 10-6 mark.

            * Pittsburgh has had difficulty putting up points of late, totaling 23 over its last two games in losses to Kansas City and Cincinnati. The Steelers lost more than a game last Sunday as Le'Veon Bell suffered a severe MCL injury in his right knee versus the Bengals and is done for the season.

New York Giants at Tampa Bay Buccaneers (+2.5, 50)

            * Veteran Jason Pierre-Paul is in line to make his season debut following a horrific fireworks attack in July. He registered a team-high 12.5 sacks last season for the Giants, who have mustered a league-low nine in 2015.

            * Bucs rookie QB Jameis Winston didn't throw an interception for the third straight contest as the Buccaneers bounced back from surrendering a 24-point lead to post a 23-20 overtime victory over NFC South-rival Atlanta last week.

Atlanta Falcons at San Francisco 49ers (+7.5, 44)

            * The Atlanta Falcons have lost two of three with an ugly victory sandwiched in between and would like to get back on track heading into their bye week when they travel to San Francisco to face the struggling 49ers on Sunday. The Falcons have failed to cover the spread in four-straight games after cashing in their first four to begin the season.

            * San Francisco's offensive woes have led to a number of changes, as Blaine Gabbert will replace Colin Kaepernick as the starting quarterback Sunday without the services of tight end Vernon Davis, who was traded to Denver this week.

Denver Broncos at Indianapolis Colts (+5, 45.5)

            * Denver's new version of the Orange Crush defense is an impressive one, as it leads the league in sacks (29), scoring (16 points) and passing yards (171.9) per contest.

            * Undefeated within its division, Indianapolis has lost all five contests outside the AFC South and is 2-3 ATS in those non-division games.

Philadelphia Eagles at Dallas Cowboys (+3, 43.5)

            * Philadelphia appeared to turn a corner with a pair of decisive wins over New Orleans and the New York Giants, but the momentum stalled in a 27-16 loss at Carolina as Sam Bradford was limited to 205 yards and failed to throw a TD pass for the first time.

            * The Dallas Cowboys have lost five games in a row but still have a pulse in the division race thanks to the pedestrian state of the NFC East. They have gone 1-4 ATS in those five SU losses, but did cover as 4.5-point dogs in a 13-12 loss to the Seattle Seahawks last week.

              Sunday, November 8

Chance of rain in San Francisco Sunday

According to weather forecasts, there is a 58 percent possibility of rain in Santa Clara when the San Francisco 49ers host the Atlanta Falcons at Levi's Stadium Sunday afternoon.

Temperatures in Santa Clara will be in the low-60s and wind is expected to blow across the field at around six miles per hour during game time.

Books opened the struggling 49ers as 4-point home underdogs but that has since moved all the way to +7.5. The total is down to 44 from the opening 45.

Rain, thunderstorms possible in Tampa Bay Sunday

Weather forecasts are expecting a 73 percent possibility of of rain and thunderstorms in Tampa Bay when the Buccaneers host the New York Giants Sunday afternoon.

Temperatures in Tampa will be in the low-80s/high70s during the game with wind expected to blow across the field at around six miles per hour.

The Bucs are presently 2.5-point home dogs, the same number as open, but the total has increased to 50 from the opening number of 47.

Dolphins are a dreadful bet against division foes

The Dan Campbell era got off to a flying start as the Miami Dolphins won back-to-back games for their new hew head coach, but that came to a screeching halt at the New England Patriots last week. The Pats defeated the Dolphins 36-7, but losing within the AFC East, and especially against the spread, is nothing new for the Dolphins.

The Dolphins will visit another AFC East foe, the Buffalo Bills, Sunday afternoon, and have posted a record of 1-5 straight up and 0-6 against the spread in their last six games against division opponents.

The one time the Fish won outright was in Week 13 of last season when they prevailed 16-13 at the New York Jets, but couldn't cover the number as 6.5-point road favorites.

This week, the Dolphins are getting 2.5-point after opening +3.

Saints getting hot for backers in past six weeks

The New Orleans Saints have been a very hot wager of late, posting a record of 4-1-1 against the spread over the course of their last six games.

They managed a push in their 52-49 win as 3-point home favorites over the New York Giants one week ago.

The Saints began the season with a pair of straight up and ATS losses at the Arizona Cardinals and versus the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, but things have gotten better and they're riding a three-game winning streak into Sunday's meeting with the Tennessee Titans.

Books opened the Saints as 7.5-point home favorites with the struggling Titans in town.

Titans on miserable run dating back to 2014

The Tennessee Titans have lost a whopping 16 of their last 17 games overall dating back to last season and have gone an almost-as-dreadful 5-12 against the spread in those games.

Remember when things looked so promising following a great performance from rookie quarterback Marcus Mariota in a 42-14 Week 1 victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers? That was the only time the Titans have covered in that stretch, which dates back to Week 7 of last season.

Titans backers (if you're still out there) will look for better results as Mariota and Co. are tabbed as 7.5-point road underdogs at the New Orleans Saints.

Buffalo lost last three home games, giving up 32.7 ppg; they're 3-8 in last 11 tries as a home favorite. Ryan is 0-5 in his last five tries. Dolphins lost last three visits here by 5-19-19 points; they're 2-1 in true road games, with only loss 23-20 at Jax. Bills allowed 14 or less points in all three wins, an average of 33 ppg in losses. Packers (6-1) @ Panthers (7-0)-- Green Bay won six of last eight games with Carolina, 5-2 in last seven visits here; average total in last five series games is 54.6. Carolina is 4-0 at home; they won by 4 at Seattle, in only game as a dog this year. Pack allowed 548-500 TY last two games; they held previous four foes to 334 or less TY. NFC North non-divisional favorites are 6-2 vs spread; NFC South underdogs are 5-3. Last four Packer games stayed under total; four of last five Carolina games went over. Would check status of star LB Matthews; he left late in game Sunday with an injury, not sure how serious it is.

Three of last four Atlanta games stayed under total- three of the four were decided by 3 points or in OT. NFC South non-divisional favorites are 8-4 vs spread, 3-1 on road. NFC West underdogs are 3-5, 2-2 at home.

Giants (4-4) @ Buccaneers (3-4)-- Giants scored 49 points in Superdome LW but still lost, giving up 511 passing yards, 10.2 ypa. Big Blue is 3-0 when it allows 21 or less points, 1-4 when it allows more- they won last four series games, three by 10+ points, winning four of last six visits here. Check status of Bucs' star WR Evans (leg) who was in/out of lineup at end of Atlanta game. Tampa had + turnover ratio in all three wins; they're 0-4 without one; Bucs are 26-52 on 3rd down last four games. Bucs lost two of three home games, but led at halftime in five of last six games. Last four Bucs games, three of last four Giant games went over total. NFC South teams are 13-7 vs spread in non-divisional games; NFC East teams are 5-10 in non-divisional games.

Broncos (7-0) @ Colts (3-5)-- Appears to be lot of internal issues in Indy, which fired OC Hamilton despite scoring 25.3 ppg in last four games. Now Manning comes back to town with 7-0 Broncos after they held Packers to 140 TY in easy 29-10 win Sunday. Colts lost last three games, all by 7 or less points; they're 1-3 at home, with only win in OT over 2-5 Jaguars. Denver lost last five visits here, with four of five by 12+ points- two of those in playoffs. Luck passed for 354 yards in 31-24 loss at Denver LY, Broncos' only win in last seven series games. Broncos are 4-0 on road this year, with three wins by 7 or less points; since 2012, they're 14-9 as road favorite. Three of last four Indy games went over the total. Not only is this short week for Colts; Chudzinski is new OC, a big adjustment.

Eagles (3-4) @ Cowboys (2-5)-- Dallas is 0-5 since Romo got hurt, scoring two TDs on 30 drives in last three games; they beat Eagles 20-10 (+6.5) in Philly in Week 2 (last game for Romo), outgaining Iggles 359-226, scoring TD on blocked punt. Eagles are 14-2 in last 16 post-bye games, but lost two of last three; they've won four of last five visits here, taking 24-22/33-10 decisions last two years. Philly lost three of four road games; they're 3-5 as a road favorite under Kelly, 0-2 this year. Six of seven Philly games, three of last four Dallas games stayed under total. Cowboys lost last three home tilts, with no TDs/six FGs in last two; they've had one takeaway (-6) in last five games. NFL-wide, divisional home dogs are 4-6 against the spread this season.

Bears (2-5) @ Chargers (2-6)-- Not much to choose from here; San Diego lost four games in row; their last five games were decided by 8 or less points. Bolts are 2-2 at home, with dogs covering three of four games. In last six games, Chicago allowed three special teams TDs, two more on offense; their last four games were all decided by 3 or less points. Bears won five of last six series games, with four of last five decided by 11+ points. Chicago lost four of last six visits here, with last visit in '07. San Diego has had lousy field position; 53 of its last 66 drives started 80+ yards from goal line- their defense/special teams haven't been setting up scoring chances. NFC North non-divisional dogs are 4-6 vs spread, 3-3 on road; AFC West favorites are 5-6, 4-4 at home.

                        Armadillo: Sunday's six-pack

Westgate Super Contest (1,727 entrants-- prize pool is $2.5M)
six most popular picks in Week 8 season record: 25-22-2

                        6) Giants, -2.5-- Bucs' WR Evans could light up the Giants' defense.

                        5) Broncos -5 (456)-- Struggling Colts welcome an old friend back home.

                        4) Rams +1.5 (461)-- Matchup of teams on the upswing.

                        3) Eagles, -2.5 (508)-- Cowboys are 0-5 since Romo got hurt.

                        2) Jets -6.5 (555)-- Jets get center Mangold back from an injury.

                        1) Steelers -4 (706)-- Underdog covered all three Oakland road games.

                        **********

Armadillo: Sunday's List of 13: Wrapping up a college football Saturday.....

                        13) Alabama 30, LSU 16-- Crimson Tide outrushed LSU 250-54, just beat them up physically on both lines. LSU's QB isn't good enough to move the chains by throwing the ball. As many pros as LSU produces, almost none of them throw the ball.

                        12) Nebraska 39, Michigan State 38-- Cornhuskers have five losses by five or less points; they were due to win a weird game, which they did here. Spartans led by 12 points with 2:00 to go- the winning TD scored on a play where the WR went out of bounds but came back in- refs ruled he was forced out, a shaky decision.

                        11) Arkansas 53, Ole Miss 52 OT-- Hogs converted a 4th-and 25 in OT, thanks to a schoolyard-like lateral; find it on SportsCenter, it is too weird to desbribe here. Hogs' win puts Alabama in the drivers' seat to win the SEC West. This game had 1,195 TY, no turnovers, six accepted penalties. Entertaining.

                        10) Oklahoma State 49, TCU 29-- Wow was I wrong about TCU; they got squashed in this game, which was over long before WR Doctson, Frogs' best player, left with a wrist injury. Four of ten previously unbeaten teams lost on Saturday.

                        9) Florida 9, Vanderbilt 7-- Games like this are why Top 25 poll is non-sensical; the Gators should drop in polls for beating Vandy without scoring a TD, but they won't. Florida has one loss, have held four of last five opponents to 10 or less points.

                        8) Clemson 23, Florida State 13-- Seminoles will drop in polls because of this game, which is comical; they played the #1 team toe-to-to-toe for 50:00, but lost, because in every game, someone loses. But Florida State is better than Florida.

                        7) Navy 45, Memphis 20-- First loss for Tigers, who don't play good enough defense to stop the Middies' option attack- they ran ball for 374 yards. Navy is now 24-9 vs the spread in its last 33 games as a road underdog.

                        6) South Alabama 52, Idaho 45-- Vandals scored 93 points in their last two games but managed to lose both; their QB is the son of Cowboys' OC Scott Linehan.

                        5) Tennessee 27, South Carolina 24-- Vols blew 17-0 lead, were saved when TE for Gamecocks was stripped of ball around Tennessee 20 in last minute. after a terrific catch/run that had South Carolina set up to tie or win the game.

                        4) UConn 7, Tulane 3-- I've been doing this stuff for long time; have never (that I can remember at least) logged stats for a game where neither team had 10+ first downs. In this day and age, how do you lose a game when you give up seven points?

                        3) Iowa 35, Indiana 27-- Hawkeyes haven't lost yet; who they losing to in the Rose Bowl? USC? Utah? UCLA? Iowa lost its last three bowl games by average of 32-19.

                        2) USC 38, Arizona 30-- RichRod went for it on 4th-and-2 at midfield when he led 23-20 in the third quarter; game swung on that failed play. There are guys making big, big money to be head coaches who aren't well-versed in game management. This wasn't a horrible mistake, but it was an unnecessary risk for a struggling team on the road.

Memo to ESPN's Rod Gilmore, who is a lawyer in real life: Jeff Fisher makes $7M a year coaching the Rams and has never coached college football. He is in his late 50's and probably wants no part of recruiting 17-year olds. Mentioning his name as a possible new coach for USC, just because he went to school there, is irresponsible.

                        1) Trouble at Missouri-- This has nothing to do with sports, other than the black football players at Missouri have gone on strike, until the school president quits or is fired. There have been racially-fueled incidents on campus recently and there is a lot of unrest regarding how those incidents were handled.

Maybe someday coach Gary Pinkel will write a book; his starting QB is off the team, amidst rumors he is involved with drugs, now 75% of the team is on strike. Have fun recruiting this winter, even if this issue does get resolved fairly soon.
