Alabama sent out as 6.5-point home fave versus LSU in Week 10

LSU has gone 0-4 straight up and 1-3 against the spread in the previous four meetings with the Alabama Crimson Tide.

Alabama has been in the national championship hunt regularly the past several years, and was one of the four teams to make the Football Bowl Subdivision’s first-ever playoff last season. Louisiana State would like to climb back into the national title picture this year.

But to do that, the Tigers are going to have to go through ‘Bama on Saturday, in a key Southeastern Conference game that highlights Week 10 of the college football season.

LSU (7-0 SU, 4-3 ATS) has ridden breakout running back Leonard Fournette to an unbeaten mark and comes to Tuscaloosa off a bye week. The Tigers rolled past Western Kentucky 48-20 laying 16 points at home on Oct. 24.

The Crimson Tide (7-1 SU, 3-5 ATS) are also coming off a bye week and are among the best one-loss teams in the country, so they remain in the hunt for the four-team playoff again. Alabama held off Tennessee 19-14 on Oct. 24, falling well short as a 14.5-point home favorite.

Johnny Avello, executive director of race and sports for Wynn Las Vegas, sent Alabama out as a 6.5-point favorite.

“This one may decide which of these two reach the four-team playoff,” Avello said. “LSU hasn’t won this matchup since 2011, and traditionally, this pair is hard-pressed to reach 40 points. Alabama will open somewhere around a touchdown favorite.”

Florida State Seminoles at Clemson Tigers

Clemson (8-0 SU, 5-3 ATS) continues to lead the pack in the Atlantic Coast Conference after topping North Carolina State 56-41 on Saturday as a 13.5-point road fave. That came a week after the Tigers drubbed host Miami 58-0 giving 9.5 points.

But the Seminoles, who won the 2013 national title and made the four-team playoff last year, will certainly be Clemson’s toughest test. Florida State (7-1 SU, 4-4 ATS) stubbed its toe at Georgia Tech in a 22-16 loss laying 5.5 points, but bounced back Saturday to rip Syracuse 45-21 as a 16.5-point home fave. And the ‘Noles won without starting quarterback Everett Golson (concussion) and starting running back Dalvin Cook (ankle).

With the status of both those players uncertain, Avello had to hold off on the opening line, but he’s wary of the banged-up Seminoles.

“You better be at full strength when you play the surging Clemson Tigers, and Florida State has huge question marks with Golson and Cook,” Avello said. “Clemson QB Deshaun Watson and the entire offensive unit has put on a clinic over the past two weeks, and the Tigers are looking to show who is this year’s top dog in the ACC Atlantic Division, after losing to the Seminoles the past three years.”

Texas Christian Horned Frogs (-3.5) at Oklahoma State Cowboys

If a Big 12 team is going to make the four-team playoff, this game could have a lot to do with it. Texas Christian (8-0 SU, 4-4 ATS), certainly still smarting from missing the playoff last year, wiped out West Virginia 40-10 last Thursday giving a dozen points at home.

Oklahoma State, meanwhile, is a bit of a shocker to still be in this position, unbeaten at 8-0 SU (5-3 ATS). It looked as if the Cowboys would suffer their first loss on Saturday at Texas Tech, where they trailed 17-0 in the first quarter and didn’t lead until late in the third quarter, when they went up 42-38. But a 28-point fourth gave them a 70-53 win laying 2 points.

“Oklahoma State showed some fight after being down 24-7 and rallied back to win by 17,” Avello said. “From the beginning of the season, I thought the Cowboys would be successful, but I didn’t think they would be 8-0 at this juncture. One would assume they will be highly motivated to go 9-0 after last year’s 42-9 loss at TCU.”

Notre Dame Fighting Irish (-8) at Pittsburgh Panthers

The Fighting Irish (7-1 SU, 6-2 ATS) are among the one-loss teams hoping to keep their playoff hopes alive, and they nearly blew it as 11-point faves Saturday night at Temple. Notre Dame needed a late touchdown to salvage a 24-20 victory.

Pitt (6-2 SU, 4-4 ATS) had surged into the national rankings after a four-game win streak – including three on the road – but fell flat as a 1-point home underdog in a 26-19 loss to North Carolina last Thursday.

“Pitt didn’t play Notre Dame last year, after playing the Irish from 2008 to 2013,” Avello said. “The Panthers went 3-3 in those six games (4-1-1 ATS), and the three losses were by a combined total of 12 points. These two schools have a history of great battles.”

Temple is giving a lot of points to a feisty SMU squad after coming off an emotional loss to Notre Dame last weekend.

Team to Watch: Buffalo Bulls

This week: -2.5 at Kent State Golden Flashes

The Buffalo Bulls come into this contest off two straight wins and look to complete the trifecta as this will be their third straight game against a team from Ohio. The Bulls are quietly been flying under the radar this season, but they are one of the more profitable teams, having cashed in seven of their last 10 games overall dating back to last season.

Kent State, on the other hand, is completely spiraling out of control and has had no answers on the offensive side of the ball. The Golden Flashes are coming off a humiliating 48-0 blowout loss to the Bowling Green Falcons and have scored just 22 total points in their last three games. These two teams are heading in opposite directions and this is a small number to lay with what is the better overall team.

Team to beware of: Temple Owls

This week: -13 at SMU Mustangs

The Temple Owls are not only coming off their biggest game of the season against the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, but also their first loss. Temple had its opportunities to knock off the Irish in Philadelphia, but just couldn't contain DeShone Kizer for the full four quarters. That game likely took a lot out of the Owls and it will be extremely difficult for them to bounce back in this spot, on the road against what is perceived to be an inferior opponent.

The SMU Mustangs have shown their ability to play up to their level of competition this season and they will have no lack of motivation heading into this contest after dropping six straight. Temple will more than likely come away with the win, but this is a lot of points to lay in what could be a flat spot for the Owls.

Total Team: Houston Cougars

Both of these teams are highly efficient on the offensive side of the ball. The Houston Cougars have outscored their last three opponents by a 135-17 margin. Led by Greg Ward Jr, who has gained national attention because of his play making ability, there are few teams in the country that can slow down the high-octane Cougars attack.

Meanwhile, the Cincinnati Bearcats are a Top 5 team in terms of offensive yards per game and their scoring offense ranks in the Top 20. They have a future NFL draft pick in QB Gunner Kiel, who since coming back from injury has thrown seven TDs and zero interceptions in his last two games. Both of these teams average well over 30 points this season and this could turn into one of the most competitive shootouts of the weekend.

Which spot bets are the wiseguys looking to wager this week?

TCU is coming off an emotional revenge spot versus West Virginia when it heads to Stillwater to play the undefeated Cowboys.

Letdown spot

The TCU Horned Frogs erased their lone loss of 2014 - a loss that cost them a shot at the college football playoffs – with a 40-10 thumping of the West Virginia Mountaineers, covering as 12-point home favorites last Saturday. It was a game circled in red ink on the TCU schedule for coaches, players, waterboys, trainers – and especially football bettors - since the Horned Frogs' docket was released. But after such an emotional win, TCU is now in danger of a letdown in Week 10.

The Horned Frogs are in a tricky spot Saturday, travelling to Stillwater to face the No. 10 Oklahoma State Cowboys. The Pokes, who are getting 5.5-points from the oddsmakers, are a perfect 8-0 SU on the season and 5-3 ATS. Oklahoma State has the fire power to stand and trade with TCU, ranked seventh in points, and unlike past seasons the Cowboys have some semblance of a defense. With the Horned Frogs hitting the road after an important win, there could be value in the home dog Saturday.

Lookahead spot

The New York Jets have stumbled after a hot start to the season, losing back-to-back road games to the Patriots and Raiders after going 4-1 SU and ATS through the first five games of the schedule. But at least they’re doing better than former head coach Rex Ryan, right? Ryan’s Bills have dropped three of their last four before enjoying a bye in Week 8. Gang Green can prove they’re better without Rex when these teams clash in Week 10.

But before that bad blood is spilled, New York welcomes the Jacksonville Jaguars to MetLife Stadium this Sunday. Odds for this game are off the board at most books while the Jets figure out what the heck to do at quarterback. Ryan Fitzpatrick and Geno Smith are both dinged up, which may leave them to start rookie QB Bryce Petty. Add to that a pending date with their former coach and the J-E-T-S – Jets, Jets, Jets - are in lookahead hell Sunday.

Schedule spot

The Detroit Pistons are the big bread winners to start the NBA season, winning outright in their first three games – all of which as betting underdogs. Detroit didn’t roll over cupcakes either, beating Chicago and Atlanta in that opening stretch. They host an old rival in Indiana Tuesday before hitting the road for a challenging slate of games.

The Pistons open this trip in Phoenix Friday, then play at Portland Sunday and Golden State Monday for a three-in-four gauntlet. Following a day off Tuesday, Detroit takes on Sacramento Wednesday and a pair of L.A. teams the following weekend. All in all, the Pistons are away from Motown for almost two weeks.

Bears are 7-0, winning true road games 56-21 at SMU, 66-7 at Kansas; they've scored 56+ points in six of seven games, but now have different QB. K-State lost last four games, last two by combined 78-9; four of last five Wildcat games went over the total.

Favorites are 6-1 vs spread in last seven Buffalo-Kent games; Bulls won last three series games, by 3-37-8 points- they won two of last three at Kent. Buffalo split its four road games, is 4-2 in last six tries as favorite on road. Flashes lost four of last six games; their last two losses were by 31-48 points. Last three Buffalo games went over total; last four Kent games stayed under.

Appalachian State won its last six games, scoring 41.8 ppg; they ran for 294 yards in 37-32 (+14) win at Arkansas State LY- they outgained the Red Wolves 549-314. True freshman QB Lock is completing 50.7% of passes. Miss St. won last three games, scoring 44 ppg; five of its six losses this year are by 18+ points- its only SEC road win was 17-9 at Auburn.

Underdogs covered four of last five Nevada-Fresno games; Bulldogs won last three series games by 16-18-20 points. Nevada won two of last three visits here, is 1-2 on road this year, with win 24-21 at Buffalo. Mustangs (-14) won only meeting 59-49 two years ago here, throwing for 538 yards, outgaining Owls 728-593. SMU lost its last six games overall, allowing 38+ points in all six (2-4 against the spread).

True freshman Jarrett Stidham makes his first start for the Bears, who will try to move forward after losing Seth Russell for the season.

Baylor Bears at Kansas State Wildcats (+17, 67)

Baylor will begin life without Seth Russell when it visits Kansas State on Thursday. The Bears lost Russell to a season-ending neck injury in a win over Iowa State on Oct. 24 and started out a disappointing No. 6 when the first College Football Playoff rankings were revealed on Tuesday night.

Russell, who is expected to make a full recovery after undergoing surgery, was responsible for 29 passing touchdowns and six rushing scores for the nation’s highest-scoring offense and will be replaced by freshman Jarrett Stidham. “I’d be totally shocked if he’s not very composed, very competitive, very intelligent, and very on cue with everything he does Thursday for our football team,” Baylor head coach Art Briles told reporters of Stidham. The Wildcats are trying to avoid a fifth straight loss and were outscored 78-9 in the last two games against Oklahoma and Texas. “You know a lot of us, myself included, have not really been here before,” Kansas State coach Bill Snyder told reporters of the losing streak. “So, it is a matter of having the answers of how to overcome the complexity and the difficulty of what has taken place.”

His lone pass attempt in relief of Russell against Iowa State went for a 12-yard TD in a 45-27 triumph. “You go by what you’ve seen and what you feel, and what you’ve been subjected to,” Briles told reporters. “That’s what we’ve noticed since being around him. He’s got an old soul, don’t look at him as that ‘F’ word (freshman), because he’s not. He’s a ready quarterback, and that’s the way we look at it.”

ABOUT KANSAS STATE (3-4, 3-4 ATS, 4-3 O/U): The Wildcats made a switch at quarterback in the first game of the season and are still trying to figure out a way to coax some more points out of the offense with Joe Hubener leading the way. The junior is just 30-of-78 passing for a total of 378 yards, one touchdown and five interceptions in the last four games. “I think we are making positive steps, and I think we just need to put it together,” Hubener told reporters. “We have shown success in the passing game in some of the early games, and we just have to get that back.”

Strong chance of storms late in Ball State-WMU game

According to weather forecasts, there is a strong possibility of thunderstorms late in Thursday's meeting between the Ball State Cardinals and Western Michigan Broncos at Waldo Stadium.

Temperatures in Nazareth will be in the low-60s with 11 percent chance of rain during the majority of the game. As the game progresses, however, that will increase to a 93 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms.

Furthermore, wind will blow across the field at around 11 miles per hour during the majority of the game.

The Broncos are presently 14.5-point home favorites and books have the total at 62.

Road team hot SU/ATS in Buffalo-Kent State series

The visiting team has gone 5-0 straight up and 4-0-1 against the spread in the previous five meetings between the Buffalo Bulls and Kent State Golden Flashes. The two MAC teams will renew acquaintances in Ohio Thursday evening with the Bulls presently 2.5-point road faves.

Buffalo and Kent State have not played since the 2013 season and this trend dates back to 2007. The lone push came in a 9-6 Bulls win back in 2009.

The Flashes opened +3 before the line moved to 2.5.
