Books earn small win in Week 7
    October 26, 2015

Three undefeated teams had byes during Week 7 NFL action which put bettors in a situation they don't like to be in.

Every week they like the Packers. They have the Bengals and they're starting to trust the Broncos and their stout defense. But none of those teams were available on Sunday.

The teams they had to choose from were a new breed of favorites like the Falcons at Tennessee. Atlanta had covered four of six games.

And there was an old favorite like the Steelers who the public has always loved, but until recently had been skeptical to trust. Pittsburgh had gone 9-1-1 against the spread in its past 11 games and was using third-string quarterback Landry Jones at Kansas City.

With not so much one-sided action, and a week that featured only two late games, the books found themselves in a position to fare well and did.

It was almost as the NFL did them a favor in scheduling, but we already know NFL commissioner Roger Goodell doesn't like Las Vegas -- or at least until he can get a piece of the win percentage.

"The public had their sides they did well on, but stumbled a bit with the Colts and Falcons, said South Point sports book director Bert Osborne. "The Titans turned out to be the best game of the day for us while the Falcons still hurt us a little bit with the teasers."

It's not hard to understand why there was an alure to Atlanta. The Falcons were almost everyone's favorite bet of Week 7, or at least the ticket count showed it that way. Titans' rookie QB Marcus Mariota didn't play and the odds increased from the Westgate's early line of -3 up to -6 with back-up Zach Mettenberger, but it would take a late rally for the Falcons to win 10-7.

"The Titans were the biggest game for us from a parlay standpoint," said Station Casinos sports book director Jason McCormick.

Sharp money did well early on with the Rams 24-6 win as 6-point favorites and also the Jets covering 9-points in a 30-23 loss at New England.

The public loved the Rams as well, but they also laid the points with New England negating any momentum they might have had on parlays. The Jets got a late field goal to the cut the margin to seven points, which ruined several parlays across town. People love the now 6-0 Patriots too, but a few still got paid on them.

"The teaser and money-line parlays with the Patriots still hurt us," said McCormick.

Way to go people. You got the double whammy on the books with that one, but still, it wasn't enough to get the players' fourth win of the season over the house.

And what got things worse for the public was that there was only two games in the afternoon, and most parlay hopes were dashed when the Raiders spanked the Chargers (-3.5) in San Diego, 37-29, a score that wasn't nearly as revealing as the true beat down.

"The afternoon turned out to be a wash for us where we won a little with the Raiders and were even with the Giants," said Osborne. "We got some sharp plays on the Cowboys (+3.5) during the week."

The Panthers moved to 6-0 as 2.5-point home favorites with their 27-16 win against the Eagles and Osborne at the South Point said it was their "best scenario -- favorite to UNDER, and killing Philly teasers."

But the big risk was still to come Monday as America's new team -- the Arizona Cardinals -- seemed to be on everyone's parlay ticket laying 9.5-points against the Ravens.

So far this season, Monday night's have been better than usual for the house, but some Bookmakers would like to trade result positions from the past.

"I kind of liked last years trend better when we'd win on Sunday's and lose on Monday's," MGM Resorts VP of race and sports Jay Rood joked before week 7's games began. "Now we're losing on Sunday's and winning small on Monday's."

Dolphins try to keep revival going
      October 26, 2015

DAVIE, Fla. (AP) Dan Campbell needed only two weeks to get the Miami Dolphins out of last place.

Reaching first place will take a lot longer, but a win Thursday at New England would be a big step in that direction.

The Dolphins (3-3) have saved their season with back-to-back blowout wins since interim coach Campbell replaced Joe Philbin, raising the stakes for Thursday's game at AFC East leader New England (6-0).

With only three days between games, it's a quick turnaround for a team staging a quick turnaround.

''We really need this win,'' Campbell said. ''We're capable of beating this team. They're not going to be easy. They never are. You've got Tom Brady, you've got the great Bill Belichick.''

Philbin went 0-3 in Foxborough, losing by a combined score of 96-30. But the Dolphins have been different under Campbell, who said he took over a team of sleeping giants and promptly roused them.

Miami built a 41-0 lead Sunday and went on to beat Houston 44-26. A week earlier, in Campbell's debut as a head coach, the Dolphins won at Tennessee, 38-10.

''The Dolphins have played great the last two weeks in all areas of the game,'' Belichick said Monday. ''They've got plays coming from everywhere.''

Buried two weeks ago, Miami is now back in the playoff mix. Only five AFC teams have a better record.

It's heady stuff for a franchise that hasn't been to the postseason since 2008, and hasn't won a playoff game since 2000. The resurgence had fans Sunday chanting ''Dan! Dan!''

''I thought that Marino had walked out,'' Campbell joked.

The Dolphins began the season with playoff hopes, and the past two weeks suggest they sorely underachieved under Philbin. Now that they're winning, can they keep it up?

An upset victory at New England would represent a breakthrough in more ways than one. There have been 21 other interim coaches in the NFL since 2001, and none won his first three games, according to STATS.

The Dolphins believe Campbell is the man for the job.

''With the changes that happened, we honestly feel like it was a new season,'' linebacker Kelvin Sheppard said. ''That's from the top down. That's what our head man stands before us and says. We've all bought into that, and that's we truly what we believe.''

Sunday reinforced belief. Miami scored on four plays covering 50 yards or more. Running back Lamar Miller had 236 yards from scrimmage even though he sat out the second half. Ryan Tannehill threw four touchdown passes in the first 16 minutes and connected on his first 18 attempts, breaking an NFL record for consecutive completions.

''Every time they'd score and Ryan came off the field, I said, `You going to score 60 today?''' Sheppard said. ''He said, `Just give me the ball back.'''

The defense dominated, too. Houston had six three-and-outs and a pick-six before managing a first down.

''To me, that's the way we play defense here,'' Campbell said. ''And for that matter, that's the way we should play offense: We're fast, we're aggressive, we don't make mistakes.''

Miami will need to keep playing that way, because Sunday marked the end of the soft part of the schedule. The Dolphins expected to have five or six wins by now, and they'll try to make up the deficit somewhere, which won't be easy with road games the next three weeks.

Even so, Campbell's players are confident their climb in the standings will continue.

''There's a storm coming, man, like coach Campbell says all the time,'' receiver Jarvis Landry said. ''He took over as head coach, and that was one of the first things: `There's a storm coming. We're going to wake these giants up.'

      ''So far, so good.''

        X-rays negative on Stafford's hand
        October 26, 2015

ALLEN PARK, Mich. (AP) X-rays on the left hand of quarterback Matthew Stafford came back negative and defensive back Rashean Mathis was cleared after going through the concussion protocol.

That's the good news for a struggling Detroit team.

Coach Jim Caldwell updated the status of Stafford and Mathis on Monday, with the Lions set to travel to London for Sunday's game against the Kansas City Chiefs. Detroit lost 28-19 to Minnesota last weekend, and Stafford was knocked around by a pass rush the Lions couldn't handle.

Stafford threw for 256 yards and two touchdowns, but he was sacked seven times.

Mathis went through the concussion protocol, but Caldwell said it was determined he did not have a concussion.

LB Burfict misses practice for Bengals
          October 26, 2015

CINCINNATI (AP) Linebacker Vontaze Burfict moved smoothly during an individual workout on Monday but didn't practice with the rest of the Cincinnati Bengals when they returned from their bye.

Burfict is eligible to return to practice this week. He opened the season on an injury list as he recovered from offseason knee surgery. Coach Marvin Lewis declined to reveal the plan for Burfict this week.

The Bengals (6-0) will be trying for the best start in their history when they play Sunday at second-place Pittsburgh (4-3). Cincinnati can take control of the AFC North with a win.

The Bengals have avoided significant injuries during their perfect start. Burfict is the only starter who has missed significant time.

Panthers downplay 6-0 start after win
            October 26, 2015

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) The Carolina Panthers are 6-0 for the first time in franchise history.

You wouldn't know it if you walked through the locker room.

The Panthers are playing it cool following their fast start - and their 27-16 win over the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday night.

''We've been doing a pretty good job of maintaining our focus and understanding what we've accomplished so far,'' quarterback Cam Newton said. ''We're not satisfied with what we've done. Is it good? Yes, but at the same time we're still trying to conquer things that people said we couldn't do, and surprising ourselves at the same time.''

Carolina hosts the struggling Indianapolis Colts next Monday night before an intriguing battle with the also unbeaten Green Bay Packers the following week.

''When you're 6-0 in the NFL, that's pretty good,'' tight end Greg Olsen said. ''It's a big deal to be 6-0, but obviously we're trying to get to 1-0 each week. Like we said last week, five wins isn't going to do anything; six wins isn't going to accomplish anything. We still have a lot of work to do.''

Things we learned from Sunday night's game:

            NOT SHORT ON RUSH:

Defensive tackle Kawann Short is turning into a legitimate pass rushing defensive tackle.

Short registered three sacks for the Panthers, putting him in contention to win his second straight NFC Defensive Player of the Week award. The former second-round draft pick had two sacks in Carolina's win last week against Seattle.

''When you have one of those quarterbacks that likes to stay in the pocket, they give you a lot of free advance to do a lot of things and he's going to hold it,'' Short said. ''So we have to trust the rush process (because) he's going to hold it.''

            NEWTON'S NUMBERS:

Newton scored the 37th rushing touchdown of his career, pulling him into a tie for third all-time among quarterbacks with Steve McNair. Steve Young holds the all-time record with 43, although he took 15 years to amass those numbers. Newton has done it in less than 4 1/2 seasons.

            MATHEWS CARRIES:

Philadelphia's Ryan Mathews provided a spark by ripping through the middle of Carolina's defense for a 63-yard touchdown midway through the third quarter. But the Eagles only gave him one carry the rest of the way. ''We had him in there,'' coach Chip Kelly said of Mathews. ''He was playing in the third and fourth quarter. There were just pass plays called when he was in there.''

Mathews ran for 97 yards on six carries. DeMarco Murray, the team's big free agent acquisition this offseason, got 18 carries but averaged 3.6 yards per attempt.

''There's only one ball,'' Mathews said. ''We've got three good running backs. We've got to make the most of each opportunity we get, and I think that's what we did.''

            INCONSISTENT EAGLES:

Sam Bradford isn't having the type of season he wanted so far with the Eagles.

Through seven games, Bradford has 10 interceptions and nine touchdowns, a representation of the team's up and down play.

''Inconsistency is probably the word that comes to mind,'' Bradford said. ''I think we have shown flashes in about every game on doing things well and moving the ball, running the offense the way that we want to, but then . whether it be a various assortment of self-inflicted wounds, we just kill ourselves. And it happens too often.''

            STEWART RUNNING WELL:

The Panthers are showing they can put up big numbers without Newton rushing a lot.

Carolina ran for 204 yards on 33 carries against the Eagles despite only getting 20 yards on four carries from their dual-threat quarterback. Jonathan Stewart, who had two touchdowns last week against Seattle, ran for 125 yards on 24 carries. The Panthers also benefited from a 43-yard run by Ted Ginn Jr. on a reverse.

Fisher: Rams need more besides rookie running back
              October 26, 2015

ST. LOUIS (AP) It's been a big coming-out party for Todd Gurley, the first St. Louis Rams rookie to rush for 100 yards in three straight games since Hall of Famer Eric Dickerson in 1983.

The team could use a lot more from the rest of the offense, and take some heat off the kid.

Coach Jeff Fisher said Monday he got four quarters of production from the defense, which had four sacks and recovered four fumbles, and from special teams in Sunday's 24-6 victory over the Browns. He said he got one half from the offense.

''We need to do better across the board,'' Fisher said. ''Getting open, creating opportunities and making throws.''

Nick Foles was 15 for 23 for just 163 yards, 41 of those on Kenny Britt's lone catch to set up Gurley's 1-yard run for his first NFL touchdown. Tavon Austin had a few moments, with four receptions for 43 yards and one carry for 21 yards.

''Yeah, it was a little bit of a slow start,'' Foles said. ''We were able to come out in the second half and get some rhythm.''

The Rams have been woeful in the first quarter, scoring 17 points, and all of them are off turnovers. Rodney McLeod returned a fumble 20 yards for a touchdown on the Browns' first series, and William Hayes' sack and strip set up a field goal on the second possession.

Austin caught a 12-yard touchdown pass in the first quarter at Arizona in Week 4, but that too came off a turnover after Mark Barron forced David Johnson to fumble on the opening kickoff and Daren Bates recovered at the 17.

The Rams (3-3) survived the slogging Sunday because of big plays from the defense. Going to a no-huddle offense for all or parts of three series in the second half seemed to help some.

''I love it,'' Foles said. ''It's what I did in college, high school, even in Philly.''

Teams are already game planning to stop Gurley, and they won't stop until the Rams (3-3) get production elsewhere.

''We just can't rely on Todd all the time,'' Fisher said after the game. ''At some point it's going to get hard to run, until we start making some plays on the outside.''

The offensive line that includes two rookies is much better on run blocking, and St. Louis totaled 158 yards rushing with a 6.1-yard average against Cleveland. Gurley is very good at shedding tackles and getting that extra yard or two with whatever openings the line has been able to provide.

Gurley's first TD, which made it 17-6 late in the third quarter, nearly didn't happen. Fisher was several steps onto the field gesturing for a timeout because the play clock was about to run down, but officials didn't notice and Gurley went in untouched.

Fisher said the play clock actually expired, also unnoticed by officials, because of an expectation Britt's 41-yarder might have been reviewed for a possible touchdown. It wasn't and the Rams didn't have enough time to get personnel down to the 1.

Fisher said he began asking for a timeout with :02 left on the play clock, but said the back judge had been focused on the fact the Browns had only 10 players on the field.

''They didn't see me. It technically should have been delay of game,'' Fisher said. ''It ended up working out good for us.''

The Rams are .500 this late in the year for the first time since 2012, when they were 6-6-1 but lost two of the last three. The last time they had a winning record at the end of October was in 2006 when they were 4-3.

Books struggle to show Denver respect with NFL Week 8 odds

“It's very rare when Denver is an underdog at home, but this is one of those rare times." - John Avello, Wynn Las Vegas

For many observers, the Denver Broncos’ unbeaten record is a lot of smoke and mirrors. A stout defense has bailed out an embarrassingly-ineffective offense led by a surprisingly pedestrian Peyton Manning.

In Week 8, that smoke could clear and the mirrors could break, with Denver (6-0 SU, 4-2 ATS) hosting a team that looks much more worthy of its perfect mark – the Green Bay Packers (6-0 SU, 5-1 ATS).

Both teams are coming off their bye week. In Week 6, Green Bay held off San Diego 27-20 as a healthy 10.5-point home favorite – the first time this season the Packers haven’t covered the spread. Denver, meanwhile, is arguably coming off the ugliest of several ugly wins, edging Cleveland 26-23 in overtime as 3.5-point road chalk.

John Lester, senior lines manager for Bookmaker.eu, said the line opened as a pick ‘em for the Sunday night game in the Mile High City, but it moved toward the Packers in a hurry.

“The pros were ready to pounce when we opened this, and in a matter of minutes the number had moved to -2.5 in favor of Green Bay,” Lester tells Covers. “Both teams had a week to prepare, and sit and think about their perfect records. It’s no secret the public is down on Denver due to the negativity surrounding Manning, but it’s not as if Green Bay has destroyed any of its opponents this year.

“I can see this getting to -3 at some point, but there will be some sharps who enter the underdog mix then. The smartest play is probably the Under.”

John Avello, executive director of race and sports for Wynn Las Vegas, said Denver has played its way into being a home pup.

“It's very rare when Denver is an underdog at home, but this is one of those rare times. In their two home games, the Broncos just squeaked by the Ravens and Vikings,” Avello tells Covers. “I will say both defenses have played extremely well.”

Cincinnati Bengals at Pittsburgh Steelers (N/A)

Cincinnati (6-0 SU, 5-0-1 ATS) has been a great on the field and at the betting window, and now has a chance to put a stranglehold on the AFC North. The Bengals are coming off their bye week, after beating Buffalo 34-21, laying three points on the road in Week 6.

Since losing quarterback Ben Roethlisberger (knee) in Week 3, Pittsburgh has just hoped to tread water, and has ostensibly done that, going 2-2 SU. The Steelers had a two-game SU and ATS uptick halted at Kansas City, losing 23-13 as 3.5-point underdogs Sunday, and they’ll hope to have Roethlisberger back in the fold this week.

But with that unknown, the line on this game will have to wait.

“The Steelers need Big Ben back, and I believe he will show up for this one,” Avello says. “If that's the case, expect to see the Bengals getting points, and with their ATS record, that's frightening.”

Lester is also prepping for Roethlisberger’s return.

“Big Ben is closer and closer to being ready, and it wouldn’t surprise me if he’s back for this division showdown,” Lester says. “The guy is tough as nails, and him on one leg is better than a healthy Landry Jones or Mike Vick. We’ll hold off on releasing a line until his status becomes clearer. Roethlisberger is worth a full touchdown to a line, so if he’s ready, the Steelers will be favored.”

Seattle Seahawks (-5) at Dallas Cowboys

It’s a battle of two teams that made the playoffs last year, but as November dawns, both are in positions where they can’t afford another loss. Two-time defending NFC champion Seattle (3-4 SU, 2-4-1 ATS) opened Week 7 in the Thursday night game, shutting down San Francisco 20-3 giving 6.5 points on the road.

Dallas (2-4 SU, 1-5 ATS) has lost its way without quarterback Tony Romo and wideout Dez Bryant. The Cowboys dropped their fourth in a row SU and ATS Sunday, losing to the New York Giants 27-20 as a 3-point road underdog. Bryant could be back this week, but Romo is out until at least Week 11, meaning Matt Cassel (3 INTs Sunday, including a pick-six) will again be the starter.

“Money came in on the road chalk Sunday night, and we quickly moved to -6,” Lester says. “The public may pile on and get this to the key number at some point, but I don’t expect it will finish there. Matt Cassel was absolutely an upgrade over Brandon Weeden at the pivot for Dallas, and the offensive line had an excellent game at New York. The Cowboys could steal a win here, especially if Dez Bryant is back in the lineup.”

Avello wasn’t quite as sold on Cassel.

“The Cowboys tried a new QB this week and that didn't work, and now they are really desperate for a win,” he says. “The Seahawks aren't that far from desperation either, knowing that Arizona is probably not fading this year, so they must keep pace in the wild-card hunt.”

Indianapolis Colts at Carolina Panthers (N/A)

Carolina reached the playoffs last season by winning a dismal NFC South Division with a 7-9 SU record. This year, the Panthers (6-0 SU, 5-1 ATS) are already on the brink of that same number of wins, after dispatching Philadelphia 27-16 laying three points at home in the Sunday night game. They’ll be in the spotlight again for Week 8, on Monday night.

Meanwhile, Indianapolis – which reached the AFC Championship Game last season – has to be grateful that the AFC South is the top contender for this season’s dismal division award. The Colts (3-4 SU, 2-5 ATS), 5.5-point home favorites Sunday against New Orleans, trailed 27-0 at one point and lost 27-21.

“The Colts have looked flat-out bad, and if not for playing in the weakest division in the NFL, they would have no shot at the playoffs,” Avello says. “Carolina keeps rolling at 6-0, and this pointspread may end up higher than I initially thought, due to the direction each team is going.”

Says Lester, “We’ll look to make Carolina around 6-point chalk if everything goes accordingly Sunday night against Philadelphia. The internal turmoil in Indy appears to be affecting performance on the field. Well, that, a bad offensive line and a Swiss-cheese defense.

“It’s two straight prime-time games for a Panthers team that seems to be finally growing accustomed to winning on the big stage.”

Football bettors must react quickly to these NFL Week 8 odds

The Panthers could move to touchdown favorites versus the Colts, but you'll likely have to wait for the line move later in the week.

                  Spread to bet now

Green Bay Packets at Denver Broncos (+2.5)

The half point hook below a field goal makes this an attractive number for Packers backers as two of the NFL’s remaining undefeated teams go at it this Sunday night in Denver. Heavy early money has flowed in on the 6-0 Packers, as bettors no doubt believe that Green Bay has a decided advantage at the quarterback position after several lackluster performances from Peyton Manning.

Manning has dropped like a stone in key offensive categories, and now ranks 17th in passing yards, 26th in TD passes and is a stunning 31st (only Ryan Mallett is worse) in QB rating. There is a widespread belief league-wide that the Broncos are 6-0 despite Manning, not because of him.

In fact, the Broncos are only a handful of plays from being 1-5. Green Bay, meanwhile, is a solid 5-1 ATS. Both teams are coming off their bye week.

                  Spread to wait on

Indianapolis Colts at Carolina Panthers (-6.5)

No reason to jump here, especially if you’re among the dwindling number of bettors who have not yet given up on the Colts. Heavy action on the Panthers might be enough to push the line to seven, especially for bettors who don’t mind shopping around.

Indianapolis’ second-half comeback last Sunday at home against the Saints gave Colts backers something to hang their hats on, even as they embark on a nasty three-game schedule: at Carolina, home versus Denver, and at Atlanta.

                  Total to watch

Miami Dolphins at New England Patriots (51.5)

Over bettors have cashed handsomely (both are 4-2 O/U) on these AFC East teams this year. New England’s offense has been devastating at home and the 51 points the Patriots scored against Jacksonville were not even as impressive as the 30 they put up on the Jets’ best-in-the-NFL defense last Sunday.

Miami has seemed to come alive offensively, and should be able to move the ball against a New England defense that is always willing to give up yards for clock when ahead in the game. The last time the teams played in Gillette Stadium, the Pats won 41-13. This could be a similar result.
