Chance of rain when Patriots host Jets Sunday

According to weather forecasts, there is a 42 percent possibility of rain in Foxborough when the New England Patriots host the New York Jets Sunday afternoon.

Temperatures at Gillettte Stadium will be in the high-50s with wind blowing from sideline to sideline around six miles per hour.

The Pats opened as 10-point home favorites, but that has since come down to -7.5. The total opened at 49 and is down to 47.5.

Mariota out, Mettenberger in for the Titans Sunday

The Tennessee Titans will turn to Zach Mettenberger under center for Sunday's meeting with the Atlanta Falcons after Marcus Mariota was ruled out with a knee injury, according to Yahoo! Sports.

Mariota suffered a sprained MCL when Miami Dolphins defensive end Olivier Vernon hit him low in last week's game.

The Titans entered the day as 5.5-point home dogs, but that has since been adjusted to anywhere from +6 to +7.

Mettenberger appeared in seven games and started six for the Titans last season. The Titans went 0-6 straight up and 1-5 against the spread in those starts.

Stafford has been tough to back versus Vikings

Detroit Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford has posted some rather impressive numbers in his career against the Minnesota Vikings, but that hasn't necessarily translated into profits at for Lions backers.

In 11 career starts versus the Vikings, Stafford has tossed 16 touchdown passes to just five interceptions but has led the Lions to a 5-6 record straight up and an even worse 2-7-2 mark against the spread.

The NFC North rivals split last season's meetings straight up, but the Vikes took both in the ATS column covering as 8-point faves in a 16-14 loss in Detroit and covering the spread as 2.5-point home faves in a 26-16 win.

Stafford and the Lions will give it a shot as 2-point home underdogs with the Vikings in town Sunday afternoon.

Cleveland Browns are league's top Over wager

The Cleveland Browns are the NFL's top Over wager in the early stages of the season, taking a 6-0 Over/Under record into St. Louis to face the Rams Sunday afternoon.

The Browns are currently 12th in the NFL averaging 23.5 points per game on offense, while the defense ranks 24th in the league, allowing 25.7 points per game.

The total for Sunday's game with the Rams opened at 42.5 but has since moved down to 41.5.

Vikings struggling to post road wins under Zimmer

During the Mike Zimmer era, the Minnesota Vikings are just 2-8 straight up in 10 road games, but have gone 5-5 against the spread in those spots.

This season, the Vikes are 0-2 SU and 1-1 ATS in their two road games but will travel to visit the Detroit Lions at Ford Field Sunday afternoon.

The Vikes have fared well at the betting window versus the Lions in recent meetings, going 6-2-1 ATS in the previous nine (4-5 SU).

Books opened the Vikings as 2.5-point road favorites but that has since moved to -2.

Patriots bring Lafell off PUP list

Wide receiver Brandon Lafell was placed on the 53-man roster on Saturday by the New England Patriots.

Lafell was activated from the reserve/physically unable to perform list after being placed on the list on Sept. 5 because of a foot injury.

Last season, Lafell played in all 16 games, starting 13, and posted career highs of 74 receptions for 953 yards and seven touchdowns. He added 13 receptions for 199 yards and two touchdowns in three post-season games.

Cowboys WR Bryant doesn't travel with team, still doubtful

Dallas Cowboys wide receiver Dez Bryant, who is listed as doubtful for Sunday's game against the New York Giants, did not make the trip with the rest of the team in order to get more rest.

A Cowboys spokesman told the Dallas Morning News that Bryant could still fly to New York on his own and so far hasn't been downgraded from "doubtful" to "out."

Bryant must be downgraded to out if he doesn't fly to New York on his own sometime Saturday. The Cowboys left their Valley Ranch, Texas, headquarters on Friday afternoon for a special team trip to Ground Zero and the Freedom Tower.

Bryant has made progress from his broken foot but not enough to preclude him from likely missing his fifth consecutive game. Coach Jason Garrett said earlier in the week that Bryant must practice before he can be listed among the team's active players.

Bryant was injured in the season-opening game against the Giants on Sept. 13.

Essential Week 7 betting notes for NFL Sunday

The Chargers are just 1-5 against the spread in their last six home games versus the Raiders.

Buffalo Bills at Jacksonville Jaguars (+4.5, 41)

      * Rex Ryan's highly touted and costly defense has been a major disappointment thus far ranking 20th in the league in total yardage and it was humbled by Cincinnati 34-21 last week.

      * The Jags will play their third London game Sunday. They're 0-2 SU, 0-2 ATS and the over has cashed in both games. Jacksonville has been outscored 73-27 in the two games.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers at Washington Redskins (-3.5, 43)

      * The Buccaneers have gone 0-7 against the spread in their last seven games in Week 7.

      * Washington QB Kirk Cousins has been without two of his top receivers in DeSean Jackson, who injured his hamstring in the season opener, and tight end Jordan Reed, who has missed the last two games with a concussion. Reed could return Sunday, but Washington needs to get more from its running game – which has totaled just 85 yards in consecutive defeats – to ease the burden on Cousins.

Atlanta Falcons at Tennessee Titans (+6, 46.5)

      * Julio Jones appears to be laboring in the face of hamstring and toe issues, as the stud wideout has been limited to just 15 receptions in the last three games after reeling in 34 in the first three contests.

      * Zach Mettenberger will get the start under center for the Titans Sunday afternoon after Marcus Mariota was ruled out due to an MCL sprain. Mettenberger got six starts last season, going 0-6 SU and 1-5 ATS.

New Orleans Saints at Indianapolis Colts (-4, 52)

      * Saints QB Drew Brees has thrown for 932 yards and nine TDs in his last three games versus AFC foes. New Orleans is 1-2 SU and ATS in those games.

      * Colts QB Andrew Luck was intercepted seven times and did not throw for more than 260 yards in his first three starts, but he returned from a shoulder injury and finished with 312 yards for three touchdowns and zero picks against the Patriots.

Minnesota Vikings at Detroit Lions (+2, 44.5)

      * The Vikings have gone just 2-8 SU (5-5 ATS) in 10 road games under head coach Mike Zimmer. The Vikes are 0-2 SU (1-1 ATS) in their two road games this season.

      * Lions QB Matthew Stafford has 16 career TD passes and five interceptions in 11 career starts against the Vikings. Detroit is 5-6 SU and 2-7-2 ATS in those games.

Pittsburgh Steelers at Kansas City Chiefs (-3, 42.5)

      * Pittsburgh leads the NFL in red-zone offense, converting 75 percent of its trips inside the 20 into TDs, while Kansas City ranks 30th in red-zone defense, allowing touchdowns 71.4 percent of the time.

      * Kansas City’s offense wasn’t putting up huge numbers even before losing star running back Jamaal Charles, and the club has averaged just 307.5 total yards the last two games.

Cleveland Browns at St. Louis Rams (-6.5, 41.5)

      * The Browns are the top Over bet in the NFL, cashing the Over in all six of their games so far this season. There has been an average of 49.8 points scored in their games so far.

      * St. Louis is tied for third in the league and ranks second in the NFC with 19 sacks. Robert Quinn has notched a team-leading four of them but could miss Sunday's game due to a knee injury.

Houston Texans at Miami Dolphins (-4, 44.5)

      * Third-year wideout DeAndre Hopkins (NFL-best 726 receiving yards) continued his scintillating season by hauling in 10 catches for 148 yards and two scores in Houston's 31-20 triumph over Jacksonville last week.

      * After answering the bell in Dan Campbell's coaching debut, the Miami Dolphins vie for consecutive victories for the first time in nearly a calendar year.

New York Jets at New England Patriots (-7.5, 47.5)

      * The Jets have gone just 1-3 SU in the previous four meetings with the Pats, but they've gone 4-0 ATS in those games.

      * In addition to wideout Julian Edelman (team-leading 40 receptions, four TDs) and tight end Rob Gronkowski (five scores), Brady may see the return of another key weapon on Sunday in the form of Brandon LaFell (foot).

Oakland Raiders at San Diego Chargers (-3.5, 46.5)

      * The Raiders opened as 5-point road dogs but are now sitting at +3.5. The underdog is 11-1 ATS in the last 12 meetings between these AFC West rivals.

      * Philip Rivers became the 17th quarterback in league history to pass for 500 yards last week and has recorded at least 350 and two touchdowns in each of his last three games.

Dallas Cowboys at New York Giants (-3, 45)

      * The Cowboys have won five-straight meetings with the Giants and are 3-2 ATS over that span. They've gone 0-2 ATS in the last two meetings, however.

      * The Giants are a fifth-best plus-5 in the turnover differential while the Cowboys are minus-5 (fourth-worst).

Philadelphia Eagles at Carolina Panthers (-3, 45.5)

      * The Eagles stumbled out of the gate with three losses in their first four games but are coming off impressive lopsided victories over New Orleans and the New York Giants to move into a tie atop the NFC East.

      * The Panthers answered questions about the relative strength of their early-season schedule by scoring a pair of touchdowns in the final 3:55 in a come-from-behind victory at Seattle last weekend.

Strong chance of rain in Tennessee Sunday

According to weather forecasts, there is a 60 percent chance of rain at Nissan Stadium when the Tennessee Titans host the Atlanta Falcons Sunday afternoon.

Temperatures in Nashville are expected to be in the mid-60s and wind is expected to blow across the field at around six miles per hour.

The Titans are presently 6-point home underdogs with backup QB Zach Mettenberger starting under center.

Betting the fave has been the play in NFL London games

Jacksonville will play its third game in London Sunday. The Jags are 0-2 SU and ATS being outscored 73-27 in the previous two.

The Buffalo Bills and Jacksonville Jaguars will square off at Wembley Stadium in Week 7 of the NFL schedule for the second game in England this season and with the line currently Bills -4.5, bettors should make note as the fave has covered the spread in eight of the last 10 games in jolly ol' England.

This season marks the ninth consecutive that the NFL will hold a game in London, England and the Bills-Jags matchup will be the second of a trio of games played in the UK. The New York Jets and Miami Dolphins played there in Week 4, while the Detroit Lions will face the Kansas City Chiefs at Wembley in Week 8.

There are a couple of trends through the first 12 games in London to bear in mind if you're going to make a wager on the Bills-Jags game this weekend.

The favorite covered the spread in two of the three games in England last season and, as previously mentioned, is 8-2 ATS in the last 10 games, including the Jets' 27-14 win as 2.5-point faves over the Dolphins in Week 4. Faves are 8-4 ATS in all 12 England games.

Last season, the Dallas Cowboys beat the Jags 31-17, covering as 7.5-point faves, while the Dolphins spanked the Oakland Raiders 38-14 as 4-point faves. The Lions, who were 3.5-point faves against the Atlanta Falcons, won SU 22-21, but obviously missed covering the spread.

If you're looking at totals, the over/under count is 6-6 in the 12 games and the over has cashed in five of the past seven games across the Atlantic.

The total in this weekend's matchup opened is currently 41.

Monday Night Football Betting Preview: Ravens at Cardinals
            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Cardinals and their high powered offense will try to extend their lead in the NFC West when the Ravens come to town Monday night.

Baltimore Ravens at Arizona Cardinals (-10, 49)

A string of narrow losses and a punishing schedule have been major factors in the worst start in franchise history for the Baltimore Ravens, who hit the road again to face the Arizona Cardinals on Monday Night Football. It will mark the fifth time in seven games that the Ravens are playing away from home and their fourth cross-country trip of the young season.

Baltimore, which opened the season with road games at Denver and Oakland, is headed west again after dropping a 25-20 decision at San Francisco last weekend - its fifth loss by six points or fewer. ''It's disappointing to lose these close games the way we're losing them," Ravens coach John Harbaugh said. "The bottom line is we're not good enough to win them right now." The Cardinals are coming off a 25-13 loss at Pittsburgh - the only team Baltimore has beaten - for their second setback in three games following a 3-0 start. Arizona is averaging 33.8 points per game, second only to the New England Patriots.

            TV:
            8:30 p.m. ET, ESPN.

            LINE HISTORY:
The Cardinals opened as 7.5-point home favorites and that number has continually moved up to sit at its current number of Arizona -10. The total opened at 48.5, went down to 48, climbed to 49.5 and has come back down to 49.

            INJURY REPORT:

Ravens - TE M. Williams (questionable Monday, ankle), RB J. Forsett (questionable Monday, ankle), DL C. Canty (questionable Monday, calf), WR D. Waller (questionable Monday, concussion), CB L. Webb (questionable Monday, thigh), S T. Brooks (questionable Monday, thumb), S K. Lewis (questionable Monday, knee).

Cardinals - WR J. Brown (questionable Monday, hamstring), TE D. Fells (Mid November, shoulder).

            POWER RANKINGS:
            Ravens (4.5) - Cardinals (-4.5) + home field (-3) = Cardinals -12

            WHAT CAPPERS SAY:
"Both the Cardinals and the Ravens water this fray off losses last week. In fact, had Mike Tomlin not gifted an overtime session to Baltimore in Week 4, the Ravens could be the only winless team in the league. Both coaches have been solid moneymakers in their NFL careers, with Arizona’s Bruce Arians the best in the league at 33-1-5-2 ATS in his career. Baltimore’s John Harbaugh counters at 2-0 SU and ATS as a dog of more than 7 points. Tough call in this battle of the birds."

            ABOUT THE RAVENS (1-5, 0-5-1 ATS, 4-2 O/U):
Baltimore's defense has been ravaged through the air, giving up an average of 286.2 yards per game and surrendering 340 yards to a 49ers club that ranked among the league's worst passing attacks. Steve Smith, who has been the only reliable target for quarterback Joe Flacco with 36 receptions and three touchdowns, was mentioned as possible trade bait but Harbaugh steadfastly denied he would deal the veteran wideout. The Ravens could use a big effort from running back Justin Forsett, who had consecutive 100-yard games before he was limited to 62 yards last week.

            ABOUT THE CARDINALS (4-2, 4-2 ATS, 5-1 O/U):
Arizona typically moves the ball at will but its fortunes are tied to how well it executes in the red zone - the Cardinals have produced 16 touchdowns in 17 red-zone trips in their four wins while converting on only 2 of 9 in the two losses. John Brown is emerging into more than just a complementary piece of the passing game in his second season alongside veteran wideout Larry Fitzgerald, reeling in 10 catches for 196 yards versus Pittsburgh. Chris Johnson leads a three-pronged running attack that was limited to a season-low 55 yards a week ago.

            TRENDS:

            * Ravens are 5-1 ATS in their last six Monday games.
            * Cardinals are 8-2 ATS in their last 10 home games.
            * Over is 4-1 in the Ravens last five games overall.
            * Over is 4-0 in the Cardinals last four home games.

            CONSENSUS:
The public is split down the middle for this Monday Night Football matchup, with 50.48 percent of wagers giving the Cardinals the slightest of edges.

Steelers expect QB Roethlisberger back Sunday

Ben Roethlisberger is expected to be back under center for the Pittsburgh Steelers when they meet the Cincinnati Bengals in Week 8.

Quarterback Landry Jones was the third player to line up with the first-team offense for the Steelers in seven games when Pittsburgh lost to the Chiefs on Sunday. Jones had two interceptions and lost a fumble.

Michael Vick started the two previous games for the Steelers.

Roethlisberger said he was "pretty close" to playing Sunday, but after taking some reps with the first-team offense last week, he was inactive at Kansas City.

The Steelers said Roethlisberger is still day-to-day, but head coach Mike Tomlin said they anticipate having their veteran starter back this week barring any unexpected setbacks.

              Texans RB Foster tears Achilles

To add injury to the insult of a 44-26 drubbing at the hands of the Miami Dolphins on Sunday, the Houston Texans learned that running back Arian Foster has a torn Achilles tendon, according to the NFL Network.

Foster left the game with 4:04 left in the fourth quarter, suffering a right Achilles tendon injury even though he was untouched on the play.

"It obviously didn't look very good," Texans coach Bill O'Brien said. "I feel terrible for him."

Foster finished the game with 18 carries for 59 yards, and five catches for 66 yards, and two touchdowns.

NFL roundup: Brady, unbeaten Pats hold off Jets

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. -- Tom Brady worked his fourth-quarter magic and kept the New England Patriots undefeated with a 30-23 victory over the New York Jets on Sunday.

Brady's 48th fourth-quarter game-winning drive covered 80 yards and the Patriots (6-0) held off the Jets (4-2) in a battle for first place in the AFC East. The loss spoiled the return of cornerback Darrelle Revis to New England.

Brady had over 300 passing yards for the 68th time in his career. He hit wide receiver Danny Amendola for an 8-yard touchdown pass with 7:16 left and got the ball back after a Jets punt. Patriots receivers dropped 12 total passes and New England had just 16 rushing yards. But Brady was still able to seal it in the fourth quarter, beating an overload blitz over left tackle with an easy 15-yard TD pass to tight end Rob Gronkowski to put the Patriots up 30-20 with 1:13 remaining.

Brady was 6 of 8 on the last drive, including three to Gronkowski, and finished his day 34 of 54 for 355 yards and the two scores.

              Dolphins 44, Texans 26

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. -- Ryan Tannehill tied a career high with four touchdown passes as Miami routed Houston.

Two of Tannehill's touchdown passes went to wide receiver Jarvis Landry and one each went to wide receiver Rishard Matthews and running back Lamar Miller. Those four plays totaled 167 yards, and 144 of those yards came after the catch.

The Dolphins improved to 3-3, including 2-0 under interim coach Dan Campbell, who replaced the fired Joe Philbin. Miami has been dominant under Campbell, beating the Tennessee Titans 38-10 in the former tight end coach's debut.

The Texans (2-5), who trailed 41-0 at the half, got a pair of touchdowns from running back Arian Foster, who left the game with 4:04 left in the fourth quarter, suffering a right Achilles tendon injury even though he was untouched on the play.

              Chiefs 23, Steelers 13

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Running back Charcandrick West and wide receiver Chris Conley stepped forward and helped Kansas City end a five-game losing streak with a victory over Pittsburgh.

West, a second-year undrafted free agent out of Abilene Christian University, scored his first NFL touchdown on 1-yard run in the third quarter on his way to rushing for 110 yards while replacing injured Jamaal Charles for the Chiefs (2-5). Conley, a third-round selection in the 2015 NFL Draft out of the University of Georgia, scored his first NFL touchdown on a 6-yard reception from quarterback Alex Smith in the fourth quarter. Conley caught six passes in place of injured Jeremy Maclin.

The Steelers (4-3) were without starting quarterback Ben Roethlisberger for the fourth consecutive game, and backup Michael Vick was unavailable due to a hamstring injury. No. 3 quarterback Landry Jones made his first NFL start, and it was not an afternoon to remember, as he threw a pair of interceptions and lost a fumble on a sack.

              Vikings 28, Lions 19

DETROIT -- Teddy Bridgewater passed for 316 yards and two touchdowns and Blair Walsh kicked five field goals to lead Minnesota past Detroit.

The second-year quarterback completed 25-of-35 attempts while Adrian Peterson gained 98 yards on 19 carries as the Vikings (4-2) downed their division rival for the second time in five games. Peterson was questionable entering the game after reportedly swallowing chewing tobacco juice during a bumpy flight to Detroit.

Minnesota rookie wide receiver Stefon Diggs caught six passes for 108 yards and a touchdown. The Vikings' defense clamped down after allowing two first-quarter touchdowns and sacked Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford seven times. The Lions dropped to 1-6.

              Jaguars 34, Bills 31

LONDON -- Buffalo players are grateful to be hitting the bye with injuries piling up and a deflating loss to Jacksonville that dropped the Bills to 3-4.

Saddled by injuries to key personnel including starting quarterback Tyrod Taylor, the Bills rallied with 28 points to overcome a 27-3 deficit, but Jaguars quarterback Blake Bortles threw a 31-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Allen Hurns with 2:16 remaining to complete a rally and give Jacksonville its first win at Wembley Stadium.

Bortles finished 13 of 29 for 182 yards, two touchdowns and one interception. Running back T.J. Yeldon rushed for 115 yards and one touchdown on 20 carries.

EJ Manuel started at quarterback for the Bills for the second straight game in the absence of Taylor, who was out for a second consecutive game because of a sprained left knee. Manuel had two interceptions, lost one of his two fumbles, and was sacked four times as he struggled early when the Jaguars built their 24-point lead. Manuel finished with 298 yards on 24-of-42 passing.

              Saints 27, Colts 21

INDIANAPOLIS - Drew Brees, who played college football 65 miles north of Lucas Oil Stadium at Purdue, completed 28 of 44 passes for 255 yards and a touchdown as New Orleans defeated reeling Indianapolis.

Beginning with the 1986 season, the Saints (3-4) are 8-2 against Indianapolis (3-4), including a 31-17 Super Bowl victory on Feb. 7, 2010, in Miami. New Orleans also defeated the Colts 62-7 during the 2011 regular season in New Orleans.

After a miserable first half, Andrew Luck threw for 333 yards on 23-of-44 passing with three touchdowns and two interceptions.

              Falcons 10, Titans 7

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Matt Ryan passed for 251 yards and running back Devonta Freeman rushed for 116 yards, leading Atlanta over Tennessee.

The Falcons (6-1) rebounded from their first loss of the season against New Orleans. The Titans (1-5) suffered their fifth straight loss, and haven't won a home game since beating Jacksonville in October of last year.

Zach Mettenberger started at quarterback for Tennessee in place of rookie Marcus Mariota, who suffered an MCL sprain in last week's loss to Miami. Mettenberger completed 22 of 35 passes for 187 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions.

              Rams 24, Browns 6

ST. LOUIS -- Rookie running back Todd Gurley continued to provide much-needed life to the St. Louis offense, rushing for 128 yards and two second-half touchdowns as the Rams pulled away from Cleveland.

Gurley's 1-yard scoring run with 2:14 left in the third quarter was his first NFL touchdown, giving the Rams (3-3) a 17-6 advantage. He added a 16-yard jaunt off right tackle with 8:11 remaining, making a sharp cut from right to left and then running through contact at the 5 to seal the result.

St. Louis' defense got the best of a Cleveland offense which averaged 26.2 points in its previous five games, forcing four turnovers and recording four sacks of quarterback Josh McCown. The Browns dropped to 2-5.

              Redskins 31, Buccaneers 30

WASHINGTON -- Kirk Cousins threw a 6-yard touchdown pass to tight end Jordan Reed with 24 seconds left and Washington rallied from a 24-0 deficit to defeat Tampa Bay.

Reed, back after missing two games with a concussion, had 11 catches for 72 yards and two touchdowns. Cousins finished with 317 yards and three touchdowns on 33-of-40 passing for the Redskins (3-4).

Dominant early, the Buccaneers (2-4) led 24-0 midway through the second quarter.

              Raiders 37, Chargers 29

SAN DIEGO -- Oakland dominated early and held on for a win over San Diego.

Quarterback Derek Carr threw three touchdown passes as Oakland handed the Chargers their third straight loss. The Raiders were effective from the get-go, racing to a 30-6 halftime lead as they dominated all three phases of the game.

Oakland scored on their first seven drives and kept San Diego from the end zone until the fourth quarter, which the Chargers won by a 23-0 margin.

              Giants 27, Cowboys 20

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- New York had four second-half takeaways and scored two return touchdowns to beat Dallas.

The Cowboys lost their fourth game in a row and fumbled away a chance at a game-tying drive in the final minute of the game when Cole Beasley fumbled a punt.

It was the first win for the Giants in the NFC East rivalry in the past six meetings. Dwayne Harris' 100-yard kickoff return for a touchdown gave the Giants their winning margin.

              Panthers 27, Eagles 16

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Mike Tolbert scored two touchdowns, one on a run and one on a reception, and Carolina defeated Philadelphia to get off to the best start in franchise history.

The Panthers, who played their first home game in nearly a month, are 6-0 for the first time. Their previous best season-opening winning streak lasted five games in 2003. They won despite Cam Newton throwing three interceptions.

The Eagles (3-4) had a two-game winning streak end. Trailing by eight late in the game, Philadelphia punted with 7:07 remaining and then turned the ball over on downs with 1:56 left.
