Red-hot Clemson opens as 5-point road favorite at Miami

Arguably, Clemson’s biggest road test the rest of the way is this week at Miami.

There hasn’t been a whole lot of talk about Clemson through the first seven weeks of the 2015 college football season. That could change soon if the Tigers keep it up.

Clemson is now 6-0 SU (3-3 ATS), and although Florida State looms large a couple of weeks from now, that game is at home. Arguably, Clemson’s biggest road test the rest of the way is this week at Miami.

The Tigers already own a victory over a solid Notre Dame squad, and on Saturday, they coasted past Boston College 34-17, failing to cash as 18-point chalk when BC put up an otherwise meaningless touchdown with 1:29 left in the game.

Miami (4-2 SU and ATS) bounced back from a pair of losses – including a near upset at Florida State – to best Virginia Tech 30-20 Saturday laying 3 points at home.

Johnny Avello, executive director of race and sports at Wynn Las Vegas, made Clemson a 5-point favorite.

“Clemson seems to have put it somewhat together after a couple of nailbiters against Louisville and Notre Dame,” Avello said. “One of the Tigers’ major issues has been turnovers, and because of that, their opponents are never out of it. Miami needs this ‘W’ to stay in the ACC Coastal Division hunt."

Texas A&M Aggies at Mississippi Rebels (-4.5)

Texas A&M (5-1 SU, 4-2 ATS) just hit its first bump in the road this season, though that bump came in the form of perennial national title contender Alabama.

The Aggies got thumped 41-23 as a 5-point home underdog Saturday.

Still, that doesn’t take A&M out of the SEC title picture yet. Mississippi, however, already got trounced at Florida (38-10 giving 6.5 points), and on Saturday, the Rebels were dealt a shocking 37-24 nonconference loss at Memphis as a 10-point favorite.

“Both of these teams’ national championship hopes were deflated on Saturday,” Avello said. “Texas A&M at least had an excuse, playing college football's elite, but Ole Miss didn't and took Memphis too lightly after having a 14-0 lead. The Aggies go on the road for the first time this year, where they have struggled in past years.”

Utah Utes at Southern California Trojans (-3)

Southern Cal (3-3 SU and ATS) has seen a once-promising season turn into a dumpster fire, with the lowlight being last week’s firing of coach Steve Sarkisian.

Yet interim coach Clay Helton and the Trojans gave Notre Dame a big fight on Saturday and will actually be favored against unbeaten Utah.

USC, a 6-point road ‘dog, ripped off 21 straight points to erase a 24-10 deficit and take a 31-24 lead five minutes into the third quarter, but the Irish rallied for the last 17 points of the game to win, 41-31.

Utah (6-0 SU, 4-2 ATS) is not only atop the Pac-12 but also in the early conversation for this year’s four-team playoff. The Utes dispatched Arizona State 34-18 as a 4.5-point fave Saturday.

“What a year for the Utes, as they continue to find ways to win,” Avello said. “The Utah run defense has been very difficult to penetrate – just ask Arizona State – so USC quarterback Cody Kessler needs to be super sharp in this matchup.”

California Golden Bears at UCLA Bruins (-5.5)

Beyond Utah, the Pac-12 is jumbled up at midseason, with Cal and UCLA both still in the mix in the North and South divisions respectively, heading into a Thursday night showdown.

The Golden Bears (5-1 SU, 4-2 ATS) took their lone loss the last time out, a respectable 30-24 setback catching 7.5 points at Utah on Oct. 10. Cal is coming off its bye.

The Bruins (4-2 SU, 2-3-1 ATS) got out of the gate with four straight victories, but they’ve stubbed their toes hard in the last two games. On Oct. 3, UCLA tumbled to Arizona State 38-23 giving 12.5 points at home, and a bye week did little to help the Bruins, as they got steamrolled 56-35 getting 6.5 points at Stanford on Thursday.

“Cal is having a very successful season, with the only setback a close loss to Utah,” Avello said. “UCLA has a two-game losing skid, as it did last year at this time of the season, and guess who the Bruins met? Yes, Cal, and the Bruins won a close one (36-34 as 6.5-point road faves). This game should attract good action, as it's the marquee college matchup on Thursday night.”

Baylor offense getting scarier by the week

WACO, Tex. -- The list of things opposing defensive coordinators have to worry about when they get ready to play the No. 2-ranked Baylor Bears keeps growing.

As Halloween approaches, Baylor is creating its own brand of horror story. This week the Bears (6-0, 3-0 Big 12) will try and haunt Iowa State's defensive unit.

Baylor has long-since established itself as a prolific offense, supposedly based around a pass-heavy spread scheme. But for years now the Bears have been just as dangerous on the ground as through the air.

This season, Baylor's go-to running back Shock Linwood has rushed for 100-plus yards in four of six games. On Saturday, though, quarterback Seth Russell subbed in as the ground-gainer and went for 160.

Baylor coach Art Briles said he likes seeing Russell run, as long as the QB protects himself.

"(Russell is) a good enough athlete that, if he's out in space and sees somebody, he can protect his body," Briles said. "I thought he did a really good job of doing that the other day."

Baylor also has a decent change-of-pace running back in Johnny Jefferson and the Bears are expecting another experienced rusher, Devin Chafin, to come back from a hamstring injury any week now.

But slowing down Baylor's rushing attack isn't something opponents can devote too much attention to, since the Bears can still burn just about any defense over the top.

Last Saturday, Baylor wide receiver Corey Coleman kept up his video-game-like touchdown pace, scoring three times to bring his TD total to 16 for the season. By the end of the day, he had 10 catches for 199 yards to go along with the three scores.

"I've been saying it for two years, at least, that it's his passion, his energy, his toughness, and his skill level that allow him to separate himself from other people," Briles said of Coleman. "He's got all that with talent, and that's what allows him to separate and be different."

Even if a viewer knew nothing about Coleman's single-season-record-setting TD stats, one play in the second half versus West Virginia would be convincing enough.

Coleman caught a slant pass from the left side, about eight yards into the secondary. Instead of carrying out the play through the middle, Coleman stopped on a dime, causing the Mountaineers best corner, Rick Rumph, to fall down. With his defender on the ground, Coleman reversed field and raced to a 33-yard touchdown.

        That's a nightmare in a nutshell.

        NOTES, QUOTES

        PLAYERS TO WATCH

--WR Corey Coleman has been unbelievable so far this season. On Saturday, Coleman caught three touchdown passes to re-establish Baylor's single-season record for receiving touchdowns with 16. Coleman passed former Bear Kendall Wright, who caught 14 touchdown passes in 2011. And Coleman still has half a season in front of him.

--QB Seth Russell becomes more of a dual threat with each passing week. Russell passed for 380 yards and five touchdowns and rushed for 160 yards and a score with a long run of 46 yards against West Virginia. If Russell keeps up that kind of production, listen for his name in Heisman discussions before long.

--LB Taylor Young posted seven solo stops, including two tackles for loss against West Virginia. He's become a key cog in the Baylor defense over the last two seasons. Despite missing two games this season, he has compiled 17 tackles, including 12 solo stops and 3.5 tackles for losses. He'll likely keep moving up Baylor's team tackle chart as the season continues.

SERIES HISTORY: Baylor leads Iowa State, 7-6.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "I think we just try to be intelligent with (QB Seth Russell running). We realize it's a position that if you want to see grandma, while she's knitting, get up and scream, it's usually when they're tackling the quarterback. We understand that." -- Baylor coach Art Briles on whether or not it makes him nervous to have Russell running as much as he did on Saturday versus West Virginia.

Seminoles try to tie ACC record 29-game win streak

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- After Georgia Tech's remarkable 2014 campaign that ended just short of an ACC title (thanks to Florida State), most Seminole fans figured the rematch during the 2015 regular season might wind up being a battle of Top 25 unbeatens staking their claim on the conference crown.

Come Saturday, that scenario is still alive and well -- but only for one.

No. 9 Florida State (6-0 overall, 4-0 in the ACC) still has a lot at stake Saturday when it faces the Yellow Jackets in Atlanta, where the Seminoles will look to stay perfect and remain on a crash course for a date in the ACC Championship game in December.

As for Georgia Tech? Well, at 2-5 overall -- and 0-4 in ACC play -- the Yellow Jackets will simply be looking for a win in what's been a woeful defense of the Coastal Division title.

And unfortunately for Florida State, a desperate team is often a dangerous team.

"I think all games are about toughness," Florida State head coach Jimbo Fisher said Monday. "But this one especially is."

Toughness would be a good way to describe what the Seminoles demonstrated in the face of adversity, both mentally and physically, last Saturday

After falling behind 7-6 at halftime to Louisville at Doak Campbell Stadium, Florida State came out of the locker room a completely different team, scoring on all five of its second-half drives and capping each with a touchdown to turn what looked like an upset into a 41-21 blowout.

Former Florida State quarterback and Heisman winner Jameis Winston, the No. 1 overall pick of the Tampa Bay Bucs earlier this year, was even on hand to witness yet another Seminoles comeback against the Cardinals -- albeit slightly less prolific than Winston's.

It was Winston who last year led Florida State back from a 21-0 hole to topple Louisville in the program's biggest comeback win in school history. And Fisher was glad to see him and several other former players come back for the weekend to support the team in what ended up being the program's 28th straight ACC win.

"He ain't changed a lick ... that knucklehead," Fisher said of Winston, who was also joined on the sidelines last Saturday by two other former Florida State stars: current Atlanta Falcons starting running back Devonta Freeman and Baltimore Ravens linebacker Terrance Brooks.

Florida State enters as only a five-point favorite, but that's likely only due to the unpredictability of star running back's Dalvin Cook's hamstring, which he pulled two weeks ago in the first quarter against Wake Forest and has become tight -- causing him to head to the sideline for treatment -- during both games since. Cook, a Heisman Trophy contender, has amassed 955 yards and 11 total touchdowns so far this season.

The Seminoles will have a chance to tie the ACC record for consecutive wins -- a record it set from 1992-95 -- Saturday at Georgia Tech, which is on a five-game skid and hasn't won a game since beating Tulane on Sept. 12. That's pretty stunning considering the Yellow Jackets -- who rose to No. 14 in the AP Top 25 poll after season-opening blowout wins -- were the near-consensus pick to win the ACC title this season during ACC Media Days over the summer.

"I wish the outcomes had been different, but they haven't," said Yellow Jackets head coach Paul Johnson, whose program will be guaranteed a losing ACC season for the first time in 20 years if it can't find a way to pull the upset Saturday. "We're sitting here, I think the last five teams we've played are 27-4 and we got another one coming in (in Florida State) that's Top 10 and 6-0, so that makes (the opponents' record) in the last six games 33-4. We're playing good teams, the games are close ... but we just have to find a way to break through and win one.

        "So maybe it's this week."

Or maybe Florida State -- just like it did in 1995 when it won its record 29th straight against, coincidentally, Georgia Tech -- will make the Yellow Jackets a footnote to history once again.

"I feel like we're the best defense in the country and nobody can stop what we do or what we bring," said Florida State linebacker Jacob Pugh, who has been one of the shining stars on a unit that ranks ninth in the nation in scoring allowed at 15.2 points per game and is coming off a five-sack outing against Louisville. "We're going to keep on bringing it every week and every Saturday"

        NOTES, QUOTES

        PLAYERS TO WATCH

--WR Kermit Whitfield is one of the most explosive players in college football. Yup, that's right, Whitfield, the ACC's Receiver of the Week on Monday, is back and better than ever all the sudden for the Seminoles, who got a career-high 172 receiving yards and a touchdown from the junior wideout in last week's win against Louisville. You have to use the word "back" when referring to Whitfield because, as a freshman, he became a hero to Florida State fans when his kickoff return for a TD late in the fourth quarter against Auburn in the BCS title game helped propel the Seminoles to the championship. But as a sophomore he fell off the map in terms of playing time and possibly in the doghouse with Fisher, only to return this season and become the team's breakout star. He's now emerged as Florida State's top receiver with 29 catches for 379 yards and two TDs, as well its best kick returner, averaging 30 yards a return. What may be most impressive about Whitfield is how he's able to get open and handle a lot of contact despite his diminutive stature: He's just 5-foot-8 and 184 pounds. He's arguably the fastest player on the team, and Fisher is now singing the Orlando native's praises. "If you go back and watch Kermit, he's been asked to play a position (receiver) he never really played in high school, or his whole life," Fisher said. "The comfort level of doing it; now he's done it enough, he's had some success with it, his confidence is growing and he feels more comfortable. He's getting much better and (I'm) very proud of the work and the time he's put in."

--LB Jacob Pugh, a former Tallahassee prep star from Godby High, is giving the hometown fans a heck of a season. Pugh was named the ACC's Linebacker of the Week on Monday after he led the Seminoles in tackles against Louisville with seven to go along with two sacks -- both career highs. He's now second on the team in sacks and fifth in tackles, despite starting only three games -- the fewest of any of Florida State's Top 5 defensive leaders.

--DB Derwin James had been waiting for his chance to shine all season, and that time came last Saturday against Louisville. Getting his first career start, James made the most of it with six tackles (second-most on the team), including a sack and a forced fumble on Louisville quarterback Lamar Jackson in the third quarter that permanently flipped the momentum in the Seminoles' favor. He's now seventh on the team in tackles and tied for third in sacks.

If you time these college football bets right, you can beat the bookies

The Hurricanes have only been a home underdog five times over the last four seasons and they went 4-1 ATS in those games.

              Spread to bet now

Pittsburgh Panthers (-6.5) at Syracuse Orange

This is a tale of two teams heading in opposite directions. Pittsburgh is quietly 5-1 SU on the season with their lone loss coming by just three points on the road at Iowa, which is 7-0 SU on the year. Syracuse has lost three consecutive games after opening the season at 3-0 SU. Their loss last week came in triple-overtime at Virginia after blowing a double-digit lead in the second half, so Syracuse should be hungover from that game.

Pittsburgh is currently a 6.5-point favorite at the majority of sportsbooks. But according to my power ratings, the line is short. I made the game Pittsburgh -10, so I certainly expect this line to go higher throughout the week. Lay the -6.5 now before the line hits the key number of seven.

              Spread to wait on

Clemson Tigers at Miami Hurricanes (+6.5)

Clemson was featured in this space last week, and those who took my advice of waiting to back Boston College survived with a push when Clemson won by 17 points. The same thought process applies to this game. Clemson played much better than expected last week off back-to-back big wins, but that only sets the Tigers up to regress even more, especially with this game being on the road.

Miami is 4-2 SU on the season, including a perfect 3-0 at home. The Hurricanes have only been a home underdog five times over the last four seasons; they went 4-1 ATS in those games. My power ratings make Clemson a 5-point favorite in this game, so there will be value on the Hurricanes when the line hits +7. Wait this game out, and grab Miami +7 as soon as that key number pops up.

              Total to watch

Washington State Cougars at Arizona Wildcats (72)

Washington State and Arizona match up extremely well for a high-scoring game. The Cougars’ offensive strength is throwing the football. Washington State averages 399 passing yards per game on 7.2 yards per pass attempt. Arizona’s defense allows 7.4 yards per pass attempt, so Washington State holds the edge.

Arizona’s offensive strength is running the football. The Wildcats average 299 rushing yards per game on a whopping 6.6 yards per rush. Washington State’s defense gives up 209 yards on the ground per game on five yards per rush, so Arizona will run the ball at will on the Cougars. The total is 72 right now, and there’s a very good chance this game lands in the 80's

Game of the Day: California at UCLA
                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Jared Goff and Cal look to avenge a 36-34 loss to UCLA last season.

California Golden Bears at UCLA Bruins (-3.5, 68)

California looks to bounce back from its first loss on Thursday as the 19th-ranked Golden Bears visit injury-plagued UCLA, which has struggled without three defensive starters. The Bruins, who have dropped back-to-back games after opening with four straight wins, spent their bye week searching for ways to slow down a California offense that ranks 12th nationally in scoring at 40.2 points per game.

The Golden Bears have been off since Oct. 10, when quarterback Jared Goff’s Heisman Trophy campaign derailed as the junior threw five interceptions in a 30-24 loss at Utah. Goff is tied for eighth nationally in touchdown passes (17) and is 12th in passing yards (1,970) despite playing behind an offensive line that has allowed 11 sacks in the past three games. He should have more time to throw against a depleted UCLA defense that has lost tackle Eddie Vanderdoes, linebacker Myles Jack and cornerback Fabian Moreau to season-ending injuries. If UCLA is going to avoid its first three-game regular-season losing streak since 2010, the Bruins will likely need freshman quarterback Josh Rosen to keep pace with Goff and the high-powered California offense.

                TV:
                9 p.m. ET, Thursday, ESPN.

                LINE HISTORY:
UCLA opened as 4-point home favorites and have come down slightly to sit at -3.5. Meanwhile, the total has been on the rise since opening at 65.5 and now sits at 68.

                INJURY REPORT:

California - RB D. Lasco (probable Thursday, hip).

UCLA - OL A. Redmond (probable Thursday, hand), LB D. Hollins (questionable Thursday, knee), RB N. Starks (questionable Thursday, head), OL P. Moala (questionable Thursday, hand), OL C. McDermott (doubtful Thursday, knee), WR T. Scott (out for season, knee).

                WEATHER REPORT:
It should be a beautiful night for football in Pasadena. It should be a clear night in temperatures in the low 70's at gametime. There will also be a slight six mile per hour wind blowing towards the north endzone.

                WHAT CAPPERS SAY:
"Both teams enter the game off disappointing losses, the Bears their first of the season and the Bruins off back-to-backs defeats. Cal’s 13–4-1 ATS mark in games off a loss is intriguing but they just had their “bubble burst” and the visiting team is 0-5 ATS. Can’t see UCLA dropping three in a row."

                ABOUT CALIFORNIA (5-1, 4-2 ATS, 2-4 O/U):
The Golden Bears are seeking to avenge their 36-34 loss to UCLA last season, when Goff threw for 303 yards and two touchdowns, including one to wide receiver Kenny Lawler, who leads this year’s squad with 34 catches, 465 yards and eight TDs. The running game could receive a spark if Daniel Lasco (hip) is available after missing most of the last four games. Defensive end Kyle Kragen (35 tackles and five sacks) heads a unit that ranks first in the nation with 21 turnovers gained but failed to contain Utah’s Devontae Booker, who rushed for 222 yards and two scores.

                ABOUT UCLA (4-2, 2-3-1 ATS, 2-4 O/U):
Rosen has thrown for 889 yards and seven touchdowns in his last three games, but he’s been sacked five times in the last two and will likely be without starting left tackle Conor McDermott, who is listed as questionable due to a sprained knee. Paul Perkins, who leads UCLA with 681 yards rushing and eight touchdowns, could receive a heavy workload against a California defense that was dominated by Utah’s ground game. Run defense has been a major concern for UCLA, which is allowing 285 rushing yards per game in Pac-12 play after Stanford ran for 310 in last Thursday’s 56-35 win over the Bruins.

                TRENDS:

                * Home team is 5-0 ATS in their last five meetings.
                * Under is 4-1 in the last five meetings.
                * California is 1-5-1 ATS in the last seven meetings at UCLA.
                * Under is 5-2 in the last seven meetings at UCLA.

                CONSENSUS:
The public is split almost dead even for this Pac-12 matchup, with 51.03 percent of wagers backing California.

Big profits from betting these NCAAF small-conference teams

The fact that Georgia Southern runs the ball so often, limits possessions by both sides and drains precious time off the clock.

Team to Watch: Georgia Southern Eagles

This week: +6 at Appalachian State Mountaineers

For those who like small-conference teams, this is the marquee matchup on the day between two of the top teams from the Sun Belt. Both teams come into this contest undefeated in conference play. The Eagles are a team that runs a vaunted triple-option ground attack that is incredibly tough for any team to stop. Michael Breida is an absolute beast on the ground and has rushed for over 137 yards in each of his last two contests. On the season, he’s already carried the ball 85 times for an incredible 875 yards and 11 touchdowns.

The Mountaineers are a solid, balanced team and have an above-average run defense, however, it will surely be tested in this contest. The fact that Georgia Southern runs the ball so often, limits possessions by both sides and drains precious time off the clock. This is a decent sized number to lay with Appalachian State if possessions are limited.

Team to beware of: Memphis Tigers

This week: -11 at Tulsa Golden Hurricanes

The Memphis Tigers are coming off arguably the biggest upset in school history as they took down the No. 13 Ole Miss Rebels this past weekend. There was no doubt that that was a trap game for the Rebels and the Tigers took full advantage. The Tigers have a potent offense lead by veteran Paxton Lynch and a highly-underrated defense. Their game against the Rebels was their proverbial “Superbowl” this season and now they may be in for a letdown in their next contest.

The Tulsa Golden Hurricanes aren't a team that many can afford to overlook. While there is something left to be desired in their defense, they are more than capable on the offensive side of the ball. If the Tigers come into this contest still living off their laurels of last week, they could find themselves upended by a very dangerous Tulsa team.

Total team: North Texas Mean Green

This week: 60 at Marshall Thundering Herd

The North Texas Mean Green are complete disarray at the moment on the defensive side of the ball. So far this season, they have given up an average of 50.2 points per game to their opponents. Marshall, on the other hand, is a team that’s starting to find its groove on the offensive side of the ball. Over the last five games, the Herd have scored an average of 34.4 points per game. They will no doubt have a chance to put up much more in this contest.

We don't expect the Mean Green offense to contribute a whole lot to this total as the Herd's defense, especially at home has been quite stout. However, if they can put up double digits in this contest, it's likely that Marshall will be able to shoulder a bulk of the load themselves.

Home team has been the hot bet when Cal and UCLA meet

The home team has gone 4-1 straight up and 5-0 against the spread in the previous five meetings between Pac-12 rivals Cal and UCLA. The pair of California schools will meet at the Rose Bowl Thursday evening.

The Bruins have won back-to-back meetings, including a 36-34 win at Cal last season with the Bears covering as 6.5-point home underdogs.

The previous two meetings at the Rose Bowl have been resounding victories for the Bruins. UCLA won 37-10 as 26.5-point faves in 2013 and 31-14 as 4.5-point home pups in 2011.

Books opened the Bruins as 4-point home favorites for this season's meeting, but that is currently down to -3.5.

                    TCU LB Freeze leaves team

TCU freshman linebacker Mike Freeze left the team after starting the opener at Minnesota and plans to play elsewhere next season.

"I made some great friends at TCU and I believe our friendships will last forever,” Freeze said via Facebook. "I'd also like to say that I have the utmost respect for Coach (Gary) Patterson. It just turned out that TCU wasn't a good fit for me. I wish the Frogs the best.”

TCU's defense was hit hard by injuries in the first two months of the season and is especially thin at linebacker. Another starter, Sammy Douglas, was lost for the season at Minnesota with a knee injury.

Freeze is not enrolled at TCU at this time but the program has not granted his release from scholarship.

Game of the Day: Memphis at Tulsa
                          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Memphis has gone just 1-5 against the spread in the previous five meetings with Tulsa.

Memphis Tigers at Tulsa Golden Hurricane (+10.5, 76.5)

Fresh off its biggest win of the year, No. 17 Memphis ventures to Tulsa on Friday looking to remain unbeaten. The Tigers posted their 13th straight win last weekend, topping then-No. 12 Ole Miss 37-24 despite trailing 14-0 early in the contest.

Memphis owns the third-longest active winning streak in the nation behind Ohio State and TCU, but will be challenged Friday by some talented Tulsa skill players. "Offensively, they are as good as anybody in America," said Tigers coach Justin Fuente, whose team has plenty of offensive firepower of its own. Paxton Lynch has paced Memphis with 300-plus yards passing in each of the last five games and has a sparkling 13-to-1 touchdown-to-interception ratio this season. "Anytime you get a team that’s ranked in the Top 25, you get the chance to prove yourself on a national stage," Tulsa offensive lineman Garrett Stafford told reporters. "We're just looking forward to giving them our best shot and see where we stack up."

                          ABOUT MEMPHIS (6-0 SU, 3-2-1 ATS, 4-2 O/U):
The Tigers average the fourth-most points in the country (46) and are 10th in yards per contest (533), thanks in large part to Lynch and a three-headed receiving attack. Anthony Miller, Mose Frazier and Phil Mayhue all have at least 20 receptions and have combined for over 1,000 yards, while Memphis' running game also features balance with five backs having contributed multiple TDs this year. The Tigers hope to get off to a good start against the Golden Hurricane, although they have proven the ability to come from behind with four comebacks of at least 10 points this season - tops in FBS.

                          ABOUT TULSA (3-3 SU, 3-2-1 ATS, 2-4 O/U):
Behind quarterback Dane Evans (2,127 yards, 11 touchdowns), the Golden Hurricane rank second in the league in both passing (354.5 yards per game) and total offense (550.5 yards). Zack Langer already has 11 rushing touchdowns on the season, although his 3.9 yards-per-carry average leaves much to be desired. Keyarris Garrett (45 catches, 698 yards) and Joshua Atkinson (36 catches, 576 yards) pace a dynamic receiving attack, while Keevan Lucas has caught a team-high five TDs.

                          TRENDS:

                          * Tigers are 1-5 ATS in their last six meetings.

Game of the Day: Texas A&M at Ole Miss
                              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Kyle Allen threw for 13 TDs and two INTs while guiding the Aggies to a 5-0 start but is suddenly unsure of his job security after the disaster against Alabama last week.

Texas A&M Aggies at Ole Miss Rebels (-5, 63.5)

Holes in the run defense and a trio of crushing turnovers ended Texas A&M’s dreams of an undefeated season last week, but SEC West supremacy remains a legitimate goal. The Aggies will try to bounce back quickly when they host another team bidding for an SEC West title in Ole Miss on Saturday.

Texas A&M quarterback Kyle Allen had three interceptions run back for touchdowns in a 41-23 home loss to Alabama last week and Kyler Murray added another pick. “No doubt that we need to play better at the (quarterback) position,” Aggies head coach Kevin Sumlin told reporters. “Those guys will be the first to tell you that.” Those quarterbacks will be going up against a Rebels secondary that has 10 interceptions on the season but was carved up for 384 passing yards in a 37-24 loss at Memphis last week. “Defensively, I have evaluated every one of them,” Ole Miss head coach Hugh Freeze told reporters. “It is very frustrating. Like I’ve told our coaching staff, it really doesn’t matter what you know, it matters what your kids know.”

                              WHAT CAPPERS SAY:
"The Aggies beat themselves in a home loss to Alabama on Saturday, surrendering three interceptions returned for touchdowns. It won't get any easier this week on the road in Mississippi. The Rebels playoff hopes were crushed with a loss to the Memphis Tigers, and they try to pick up the pieces this week at home against Texas A&M."

                              ABOUT TEXAS A&M (5-1 SU, 4-2 ATS, 3-3 O/U):
Allen threw for 13 touchdowns and two interceptions while guiding the Aggies to a 5-0 start but is suddenly unsure of his job security after the disaster against Alabama last week. The sophomore sat in favor of true freshman Murray for a pair of possessions, though Murray did little in the short stint to distinguish himself. Allen took over the position from former Aggies player Kenny Hill due to the latter’s tendency to turn the ball over last season, including a pair of picks by Hill in a 35-20 home loss to Ole Miss.

                              ABOUT OLE MISS (5-2 SU, 4-3 ATS, 3-4 O/U):
The Rebels' defense has allowed at least 37 points in three of the last five games and could be without its biggest weapon in defensive lineman Robert Nkemdiche, who suffered a concussion while playing offense last week. Nkemdiche joins a long list of injured Ole Miss defenders that also includes key defensive back Trae Elston. “As far as Robert (Nkemdiche), you just don’t know,” Freeze told reporters of Nkemdiche’s potential availability for Saturday. “I know he loves to play the game. I am not in charge of protocols but I know he loves the game and wants to play. We have to make sure he is safe and ready to play.”

                              TRENDS:

                              * Rebels are 4-1 ATS in their last five home games.
                              * Under is 7-0 in Rebels last seven games in October.
                              * Over is 13-6 in Aggies last 19 games in October.
