CFL Betting Notes - Week 19
            October 26, 2015

There is just one more postseason spot up for grabs in the CFL, but the final picture for this season’s Grey Cup Playoffs is far from being clear.

Last week’s action started off with two huge upsets on Friday that shook-up the East Division title race. First, Montreal ran all over Toronto 34-2 as an eight-point road underdog and then British Columbia stunned Hamilton 40-13 as a 2 ½-point underdog at home.

Saturday’s CFL double-header started with Ottawa hammering out a key 27-20 victory against Winnipeg as a slight 1 ½-point road underdog and Edmonton closed things out with a 35-24 win over Saskatchewan as an 8 ½-point favorite on the road.

            Friday, Oct. 30

British Columbia Lions (6-10 SU, 9-7 ATS) vs. Toronto Argonauts (9-7 SU, 8-8 ATS)

            Point-spread: Toronto -3 ½
            Total: 53 ½

            Game Overview

The Lions’ huge upset of Hamilton keeps them right in the hunt for the final spot in the postseason, but it was still just their second straight-up win in their last seven games. BC remains a solid team to bet on though with a 5-1 record against the spread over its last six contests. Jonathon Jennings was impressive in the win against the Tiger-Cats with 247 yards passing and three touchdown throws while completing 23-of-33 attempts.

The fact that the Argonauts could only muster two total points in last week’s loss has to be a bit troublesome for a team that is still in the thick of the East Division title race. Toronto is averaging 24.5 points a game and its defense is allowing 28.8 points, which is another bad sign with just two regular season games left to play. One positive is the return of quarterback Ricky Ray, who saw his first action of the season in last week’s loss.

            Betting Trends

BC has an 8-2 SU edge in its last 10 road games against Toronto and it is 4-2 ATS in the last six. The total has stayed UNDER in 10 of the Lions’ last 12 games on the road against the Argonauts.

            Saturday, Oct. 31

Saskatchewan Roughriders (2-14 SU, 4-12 ATS) vs. Calgary Stampeders (12-4 SU, 5-11 ATS)
            Point-spread: Calgary -14
            Total: 49 ½

            Game Overview

The Roughriders current losing streak now stands at three games both SU and ATS and they have only covered once in their last six outings. The total has gone OVER in five of their last seven games. After allowing 35 points to the Eskimos in its latest loss, Saskatchewan is now giving-up an average of 31.1 points a game, which is easily the most in the CFL.

Calgary is coming off a bye following its 27-15 victory against Toronto on Oct. 17 as a one-point road favorite. This was just the second time in the Stampeders’ last six games they managed to cover the spread while going 4-2 SU. Running back Jon Cornish remains questionable for this game, but Calgary’s passing game has flourished under the direction of Bo Levi Mitchell, who is ranked second in the league in total passing yards (4,304).

            Betting Trends

Saskatchewan has lost six of its last seven road games against Calgary SU and the total has gone OVER in four of the last six meetings here. The Stampeders won the first meeting this season 34-31 as 5 ½-point road favorites.

            Sunday, Nov. 1

Ottawa RedBlacks (10-6 SU, 10-6 ATS) vs. Hamilton Tiger-Cats (10-6 SU, 11-5 ATS)
            Point-spread: Hamilton -4
            Total: 54

            Game Overview

Ottawa’s recent home-and-home sweep of Winnipeg has it tied with the Tiger-Cats for first place in the East, so this new home-and-home series to close-out the regular season will likely decide the division crown. The RedBlacks have yet to face Hamilton this season and they come into this game with a SU even 3-3 record in division play. They have gone 5-3 ATS in eight previous road games this year.

The Tiger-Cats blew a golden opportunity to carve-out a one-game edge in the East with last week’s stunning loss and the issues could run deeper with this team heading into the postseason without quarterback Zach Collaros in the lineup. In his place, Jeff Mathews has completed 69 percent of his 142 passing attempts for 1,298 yards, but he has as many interceptions (6) as touchdown throws.

            Betting Trends

Looking back at last year’s series, Hamilton won all three games SU, but Ottawa had the 2-1 edge ATS. The total went OVER in two of the three games.

Montreal Alouettes (6-10 SU, 7-8-1 ATS) vs. Edmonton Eskimos (13-4 SU, 10-7 ATS)
            Point-spread: Edmonton -8
            Total: 44 ½

            Game Overview

Montreal is still in the running for a playoff spot as a possible crossover team in the West, but last week was its first win either SU or ATS in its last five games. During the recent four-game losing streak, the Alouettes averaged just 16.5 points a game, so they have to be thrilled with the 34 points they put up on the road against Toronto.

The Eskimos remain in the driver seat in the West with a 2-1 series edge against Calgary, but they cannot afford to look past this game in what will be their regular season finale. Looking to go out with a bang, look for another big day from quarterback Mike Reilly. He threw for 377 yards and three touchdowns in last week’s win against Saskatchewan.

            Betting Trends

Montreal actually has a 4-1 edge both SU and ATS in its last five road games against Edmonton with the total going OVER in all five meetings. The Eskimos won the first meeting this season 15-12 as two-point road underdogs on Aug. 13.

                Team Betting Notes

                -- Edmonton (13-4
) continues to roll right along, posting a 35-24 win and cover at Saskatchewan (2-14). It snaps a 1-3 ATS slide for the Eskimos. The Roughriders have struggled against the number all season, going 1-5 ATS in their past six, 3-6 ATS in nine home games and 4-11-1 ATS in 16 games overall.

-- Ottawa (10-6) completed the home-and-home sweep at Winnipeg (5-12), and the cover by the RedBlacks snapped a 4-0 ATS run for the Blue Bombers.

-- Toronto (9-7) had its game against Montreal (6-10) moved down the QEW to Hamilton, as the Rogers Centre crew did not have enough time to convert from a baseball setup for the Blue Jays to a football setup for the Argos. The Alouettes should send a thank you note to the Jays and the Rogers crew, as they crushed the Argos 34-2 for the easy win and cover. The Alouettes snapped an 0-4 SU/ATS skid.

-- The 'under' has cashed in three in a row for the Argonauts heading into their game against the BC Lions Oct. 30. The good news is that the Jays are headed for the golf course, so the Argos will have the true home-field advantage again.

-- Hamilton (10-6) was out on the left coast at BC Lions (6-10), and they were hammered 40-13. The 40 points were easily the most allowed by the TiCats this season, wiht the previous high of 27 back on Sept. 11. It was also a rare 'over' for Hamilton, snapping a 4-0 'under' stretch. The under was 11-4 in the first 15 for the TiCats, too.

-- Calgary (12-4) was enjoying a late-season bye to rest their bumps and bruises before resuming action in Week 19 against the Roughriders. In the first meeting with the Riders it was the Stamps recording a 34-31 win on the road, and the home team earning a cover in the rare 'over'. The 'under' is 11-5 for the Stamps this season.
