NCAAF Opening Line Report: 'Bama opens as 6.5-point faves vs. Ole Miss

Johnny Avello, executive director of race and sports for Wynn Las Vegas, installed the Tide as 6.5-point favorites.

Week 3 of the college football season is usually dotted with some less-than-stellar nonconference matchups. But the mighty Southeastern Conference is getting right down to brass tacks with two big games among ranked teams, highlighted by perennial national title contender Alabama hosting Mississippi.

Both teams come in 2-0 SU, with the Crimson Tide (1-1 ATS) opening with a solid 35-17 neutral-site win over Wisconsin as a 12.5-point favorite, then taking a less impressive 37-10 home win laying 34.5 points against Middle Tennessee State on Saturday.

Meanwhile, Mississippi (2-0 ATS) has cracked 70 points in both its games, steamrolling Tennessee-Martin 76-3 giving 39 points in its opener and whipping Fresno State 73-21 Saturday as a 31.5-point fave. But the trek to Tuscaloosa will be the Rebels’ first road game, and ‘Bama – which made it to the national semifinals last year before losing to Ohio State – would surely like to avenge its lone regular-season loss of 2014, a 23-17 setback as a 5.5-point chalk at Mississippi.

Johnny Avello, executive director of race and sports for Wynn Las Vegas, installed the Tide as 6.5-point favorites.

“Ole Miss has scored 149 points to go along with 1,260 total yards in two weeks, with junior college transfer quarterback Chad Kelly lighting it up,” Avello said. “Alabama coach Nick Saban, on the other hand, has been experimenting with two QBs, trying to find the correct formula. Can Mississippi continue their offensive ways at ‘Bama?”

    Auburn at Louisiana State (-6.5)

It’s another top-25 standoff among SEC teams, but Auburn will certainly have its doubters after its latest performance. The Tigers (2-0 SU, 0-2 ATS) were whopping 44-point home favorites against Jacksonville State, but needed overtime to eke out a 27-20 victory.

LSU had its season opener against McNeese State canceled due to foul weather, so the Tigers’ first game came Saturday night at Mississippi State – yet another ranked SEC team – and they held on for a 21-19 victory, failing to cover as a 3-point favorite.

“Auburn was very fortunate to come away with a ‘W.’ The Tigers were totally outplayed by Jacksonville State,” Avello said. “Auburn coach Gus Malzahn will make this a very difficult week of practice, and I expect a better effort in this important SEC matchup. I can’t make too drastic of a change in my power ratings.”

Georgia Tech at Notre Dame (-2.5)

The Fighting Irish (2-0 SU, 1-1 ATS) haven’t dined on cupcakes the first two weeks, so it would seem that they’d be well prepared to host the Yellow Jackets. After ripping Texas 38-3 as an 8.5-point home chalk in its opener, Notre Dame bested Virginia 34-27 Saturday, though it failed to cash giving 13.5 points on the road.

But Notre Dame lost starting running back Tarean Folston with a torn ACL against Texas, then lost starting QB Malik Zaire for the year due to a broken ankle against Virginia.

Tech has rung up a ton of points in its 2-0 SU and ATS start, but both games were at home against much lesser competition. The Jackets drilled Alcorn State 69-6 as a 41-point favorite and Tulane 65-10 laying 32.5 points.

“The Irish lose Zaire this week and Folston last week. On a positive note, redshirt freshman QB DeShone Kiser looked pretty good, especially on the last drive to secure the victory over Virginia,” Avello said. “Georgia Tech appears to be an offensive powerhouse, so this line is tight.”

    Stanford at Southern Cal (-8)

The Trojans have hammered both their opponents so far, hanging up a 50-plus spot both times. On Saturday, as an overwhelming 44.5-point chalk against Idaho, USC rumbled to a 59-9 victory, moving to 2-0 SU and ATS.

Stanford (1-1 SU and ATS) stumbled at Northwestern in its opener, losing 16-6 as 10-point chalk, but bounced back Saturday with a 31-7 home win over Central Florida giving 20 points.

“The Trojans belted the Sun Belt Conference two weeks in a row, but now get into the meat of their schedule,” Avello said. “Even though Stanford has looked lethargic on offense, the final outcome of this matchup over the past five years has been no more than 7 or 8 points.”

Oregon QB Adams suffers broken finger

Oregon quarterback Vernon Adams Jr. has a broken right index finger but plans to continue to play, according to a CSN Northwest report Tuesday.

School officials have not confirmed the injury, which Adams suffered in the Ducks' season-opening win over Eastern Washington and then played through pain last Saturday night in a 31-28 loss at Michigan State.

Adams, a senior transfer from Eastern Washington, completed 22 of 39 passes for 309 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions against the Spartans, but the injured finger clearly caused grip and accuracy problems as the game progressed.

In a postgame news conference, Adams was wearing a splint on the finger.

"We don't talk about injuries around here, but he wasn't at his best in that game," Oregon offensive coordinator Scott Frost said Monday.

If Adams is limited or sidelined for Saturday's game against Georgia State, the Ducks would turn to backup Jeff Lockie.

South Carolina QB Mitch remains hospitalized

South Carolina quarterback Connor Mitch is still in the hospital fighting an an internal infection but could be released soon.

A hip bruise suffered in a Sept. 3 win over North Carolina led to internal bleeding and the infection. Coach Steve Spurrier said Tuesday that Mitch could be hospitalized for another day to receive treatment until he is released.

Mitch also separated his right shoulder in a loss to Kentucky last Saturday and is expected to be out four to six weeks.

Perry Orth, a former walk-on, is expected to start at quarterback in Mitch's place for the Gamecocks (1-1, 0-1) on Saturday night against seventh-ranked Georgia (2-0, 1-0) in a Southeastern Conference game.

Notre Dame TE Smythe out for season

Another season-ending injury hit the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, who ruled tight end Durham Smythe out for the 2015 season with a torn medial collateral knee ligament.

Smythe was inexperienced entering the season with just one career catch and had two receptions in the first two games of the season before he was hurt at Virginia.

None of the four tight ends remaining on the Irish roster have caught a pass in their college career.

Notre Dame also lost quarterback Malik Zaire (fractured ankle) in Saturday's victory at Virginia.

Running back Tarean Folston (knee) is out for the season. He was injured in the Sept. 5 win in South Bend over Texas.

          Auburn stands behind QB Johnson

Auburn is standing behind struggling quarterback Jeremy Johnson, but his performance at LSU this week looms as a potential crossroads moment for the 2015 Tigers.

Johnson, viewed as a preseason Heisman Trophy quarterback, has five interceptions in 53 pass attempts and his performance last week left the Tigers ripe for the Jacksonville State upset bid.

"It's football," said Johnson. "Interceptions are going to happen. All the greats throw interceptions. I feel really good about where this team is, and where I'm at. I have a lot of confidence in myself, so does my team."

Head coach Gus Malzahn agreed with Johnson's sentiment that some of his mistakes were a byproduct of calling plays that didn't hit weak spots of the defense.

"I need to help Jeremy, too," Malzahn said.

Jones remains No. 1 QB for Buckeyes ... for now

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Nothing has changed at quarterback for top-ranked Ohio State after last Saturday's 38-0 win over Hawaii.

Cardale Jones remains the starter over J.T. Barrett, coach Urban Meyer announced Monday. Neither played particularly well in the shutout win that saw the defense upstage the offense in the Buckeyes' 15th consecutive victory.

"Both of them will continue to get reps," Meyer said. "The approach I've taken is Cardale started, he's the starting quarterback.

"I met with him yesterday. J.T. has not beat him out yet. He's going to continue to have opportunities to do that because J.T. is a very good player and Cardale's got to perform."

          Rutgers' top receiver arrested, suspended

Rutgers' star receiver, Leonte Carroo, is the latest Scarlet Knights football player to run afoul of the law. Carroo was charged with assault, and was suspended indefintiely from the team, the school announced Monday.

Carroo was arrested for assault in connection with domestic violence after Rutgers' game on Saturday. Rutgers Police Chief Kenneth Cop said the arrest resulted from an incident that occurred outside the team's training and administrative building.

Carroo's seven catches, 181 receiving yards and three touchdown catches all lead the team through two games this year. Last season he led the team with 55 receptions, 1,086 receiving yards and 10 touchdown catches. He was selected to the all-Big Ten first team by the media in 2014, and is a team captain this year as a senior.

Arkansas' top receiver out six weeks

Arkansas wide receiver Keon Hatcher, the Razorbacks' leading receiver, will be sidelined for at least six weeks because of a foot injury suffered in Saturday's home loss to Toledo, coach Bret Bielema said Monday.

Bielema also said Hatcher was scheduled to have surgery on Monday.

This season, Hatcher leads the Razorbacks with 13 catches, 198 receiving yards and two touchdowns in two games. Last year, he led the team with 558 receiving yards and six touchdown catches.

Before the season started the Razorbacks lost last season's leading rusher, Jonathan Williams, for the season.

Arkansas was ranked No. 18 in the Associated Press poll last week, but dropped out of the rankings after losing at home to unranked Toledo.

NCAAF Line Watch: Wait for Air Force's spread to climb

Wait and grab Air Force with as many points as you can, especially if the line rises back up to +27 or +28.

Spread to bet now: Alabama -6.5 (vs. Mississippi)

Back and forth money has come in on this game so far with the line fluctuating between -6.5 to -8, and currently sitting on -6.5 in most locations with a few spots still showing -7. More money is likely to come in on Alabama later in the week, so laying less than a touchdown now makes sense.

My power ratings make Alabama a 7-point favorite in this game, so the line was correctly bet into place. However, Alabama is playing with legitimate revenge after losing 23-17 in Mississippi as 4.5-point road favorites last season. The Crimson Tide also have the scheduling edge in this game as they’ve already played Wisconsin while the Rebels played a pair of inferior opponents in UT Martin and Fresno State. Take Alabama now before the line goes up above a full touchdown.

Spread to wait on: Air Force +26.5 (at Michigan State)

Air Force lost starting quarterback Nate Romine for the season to a knee injury in their 37-16 win over San Jose State last week. Romine will be replaced by senior Karson Roberts, but the transition should be smooth and somewhat unnoticeable. The Falcons run the triple-option offense, and passing the football is an afterthought for Air Force. The Spartans opened as a 27.5-point home favorite, and the line quickly came down to -26.5, but it will likely creep up once the QB news becomes more known to the general betting public.

Michigan State is in a terrible situational and scheduling spot for this game. The Spartans come in off their spotlight revenge win over Oregon on Saturday night. Not only that, but Michigan State is going from defending the up-tempo spread offense of Oregon to the triple-option offense of Air Force. That’s a dramatic difference, and the Spartans only have a week to prepare. Wait and grab Air Force with as many points as you can, especially if the line rises back up to +27 or +28.

Total to watch: Texas Tech/Arkansas 67

Texas Tech and Arkansas play completely different styles of football. The Red Raiders play a wide-open offense while throwing the football on just about every play. The Razorbacks have a powerful rushing attack that simply wears defenses down as the game goes on.

The total opened at 64.5, but it was quickly bet up to the current price of 67. The match-up sets up perfectly for a high-scoring game as Arkansas doesn’t see wide-open passing attacks in the SEC while Texas Tech doesn’t face physical running teams in the Big 12. Both offenses should have a lot of success, so a shootout is expected on Saturday.

Mid-Major Money: Big profits from NCAAF small conferences

The Bowling Green Falcons are already battle tested just two weeks into the season and their offense has been impressive to start the year.

Team to watch: Bowling Green Falcons

              This week: +3 vs. Memphis

The Bowling Green Falcons come into this contest off a big win at Maryland in Week 2. The Falcons looked extremely impressive on the road against a Big Team team and gave the SEC’s Tennessee Volunteers all they could handle in Week 1. This team is already battle tested just two weeks into the season and their offense has been impressive to start the year.

They showed no issue with being on the road and now that they’re heading back home, they should be able to keep their momentum going. There is always a concern of a potential letdown spot after such a big win and while their defense certainly leaves something to be desired, getting points at home with such a dynamic offense is tough to pass up.

Team to beware of: Army Black Knights

This week: +6 vs. Wake Forrest

On paper, this is simply a bad matchup for the Black Knights. Army has been absolutely shredded through the air in their first two contests, surrendering 322 and 270 passing yards to both Fordham and Connecticut, two teams not typically known for their passing attacks.

This week, Army goes up against a Demon Deacon team that has averaged 380 yards through the air in its first two games, with the most recent being a 373-yard performance on the road at Syracuse. Throw in the fact that Wake Forest is 5-2 ATS and 7-0 SU against the Black Knights and this game could get ugly early.

Total team to watch: Eastern Michigan Eagles

This week: 63.5 at home vs Ball State

While Eastern Michigan hasn't lit up the scoreboard against top-notch competition, its re-tooled offense has increased production and they have become very balanced on both sides of the ball. The Eagles should have no issues moving the ball up and down the field on the Cardinals who have been giving up an average of 525 yards per game on defense.

Defense was a big problem for the Eagles last season as they were the worst defensive team in the country. They’ve taken a step up this year, however, they still have a long way to go. The offense will put up points, but the defense will give them all back. In these cases, the best defense is offense. Plenty of points should be scored here.

                  Armadillo's Write-Up

                  Week 3

                  Thursday's games
Louisville is 0-2 after losing as 13-point favorite to Houston last week, turning ball over four times (-3), allowing Cougars to run ball for 226 yards, convert 11-22 on third down. Clemson (-9.5) beat Cardinals 23-17 at home LY, despite being outgained 264-229. Since '10, Louisville is 0-4 as home underdog. Playing a freshman QB has its disadvantages. Tigers are 1-4 in last five games as road favorite. This game opened at pick 'em; Clemson has been bet up to -6.

                  Friday's games
Underdogs covered seven of last nine Florida State-Boston College tilts; Seminoles won last five meetings, with three of last four by 14+ points. FSU won four of last five visits here, last two 48-34/38-7- they're 6-3 in last nine games as road favorite. BC just beat couple of I-AA stiffs; hard to tell much from that; Eagles are 4-2 as home dog under Addazio, have run ball for 440 yards in last two games against Florida State. Soph QB is playing his first game against a bigtime opponent.

Arizona State struggled with I-AA Cal Poly last week after losing week before to Texas A&M; Sun Devils play USC next week, are 11-6 as a home favorite under Graham. ASU ran ball for 423 yards in 58-23 win at New Mexico LY (-23). Pac-12 home favorites are 7-2 vs spread out of conference; MW road underdogs are 3-2. Lobos are 1-6 as home dogs the last 2+ years; they gave up 600 yards in home loss to Tulsa last week.

                    Thursday, September 17

                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Game of the Day: Clemson at Louisville
                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Clemson Tigers, 2-0 ATS to start the campaign, are 6-0 ATS in their last six games in September.

Clemson Tigers at Louisville Cardinals (+6.5, 51)

Ninth-ranked Clemson begins its pursuit of a spot in the ACC title game when it visits winless Louisville on Thursday in the conference opener for both schools. The Tigers have rolled over two lesser opponents to begin the slate while Louisville lost to Auburn and Houston and is looking to avoid its first 0-3 start since 1984.

Clemson quarterback Deshaun Watson suffered a broken hand early in an October contest against the Cardinals last season and the injury caused him to miss the following three games. "I wouldn't say this game matters more," Watson, a sophomore, said at a press conference. "Each game is the biggest game for me." Louisville hasn't announced a starting quarterback but is expected to turn to sophomore Kyle Bolin, who would represent the team's third starting quarterback in three games. "He hit hands and he executed what we were asking him to do in that part of the (Houston) game and I think he's had a good week of practice," Cardinals coach Bobby Petrino told reporters.

                    TV:
                    7:30 p.m. ET, ESPN.

                    LINE HISTORY:
Books opened the Cardinals as 5-point home dogs but that is now up to +6.5. The total opened at 54 and is down to 51.

                    INJURY REPORT:
Clemson - OL Ryan Norton (Out, leg), WR Mike Williams (Out indefinitely, neck). Louisville - TE Cole Hikutini (Questionable, shoulder), WR Emonee Spence (Questionable, hamstring), QB Will Gardner (Questionable, ribs), DE Johnny Richardson (Questionable, knee), WR Alphonso Carter (Questionable, hamstring), WR Jamari Staples (Out, undisclosed), WR James Quick (Out, ankle).

                    WEATHER:
Temperatures expected to be in the high-70s with wind blowing toward the north endzone at around five miles per hour.

                    WHAT CAPPERS SAY:
"Deshaun Watson threw for 248 yards and three TDs in a win over Appalachian State on Saturday. The Tigers will look to move to 3-0 as they face a struggling Louisville team on Thursday."

                    WHAT BOOKS SAY:
"We opened Clemson as 4.5 point faves over Louisville and was quickly bet up to our current number of Clemson -7 with the Tigers seeing 76 percent of the action and the OVER 52 point total getting all the early action."

                    ABOUT CLEMSON (2-0 SU, 2-0 ATS, 1-1 O/U):
Watson has completed 77.1 percent of his passes for five touchdowns in two games while displaying no lingering signs of the major knee injury he suffered last November. Sophomore receiver Artavis Scott has a team-best 12 catches -- he had 10 receptions versus Louisville last season -- as the Tigers deal with the loss of standout junior Mike Williams (fractured neck), who had 1,030 receiving yards in 2014. A strong defense is receiving stellar play from junior free safety T.J. Green (23 tackles), junior defensive end Shaq Lawson (4.5 tackles for losses) and junior strong safety Jayron Kearse (seven career interceptions).

                    ABOUT LOUISVILLE (0-2 SU, 1-1 ATS, 1-0-1 O/U):
The Cardinals have dropped their first two games for the first time since 1998 and settling on a starting quarterback is becoming a necessity. Sophomore Reggie Bonnafon started the opener against Auburn and freshman Lamar Jackson started the second game before Bolin entered and passed for 157 yards and one touchdown in the final quarter against Houston to likely draw his starting opportunity. Defensively, junior strong safety Josh Harvey-Clemons leads the squad with 24 tackles and two interceptions, junior outside linebacker Keith Kelsey has 23 tackles and team's only two sacks and senior outside linebacker James Burgess has 18 tackles.

                    TRENDS:

                    * Tigers are 6-0 ATS in their last six games in September.
                    * Tigers are 0-5 ATS in their last five conference games.
                    * Cardinals are 0-6 ATS in their last six home games.
                    * Over is 5-1-2 in Cardinals' last eight games overall.

                    CONSENSUS:
Fifty-eight percent of users are backing Clemson.

                        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Game of the Day: Florida State at Boston College
                        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Seminoles are just 2-5 against the spread in their last seven meetings with Boston College.

Florida State Seminoles at Boston College Eagles (+9, 46.5)

Florida State sophomore running back Dalvin Cook looks to continue shredding defenses while taking pressure off quarterback Everett Golson as the No. 6 Seminoles visit Boston College on Friday in the ACC opener for both teams. Cook rushed for 422 yards and five touchdowns in his first two games - including 266 yards and three scores on 30 carries in Florida State's 34-14 victory over USF last week - and is well on his way to surpassing his freshman totals of 1,008 and eight.

Seminoles coach Jimbo Fisher said he wasn't planning to have Cook run 30 times but told reporters "if he’s hot like that and he can finish, we’re going to continue to give it to him.” Florida State tries for its sixth straight victory over the Eagles but must figure out a way to start quicker on offense - a point of emphasis in Monday's practice - as it's scored 28 of its 93 points in the first half. Golson, who transferred after graduating from Notre Dame, is 33-of-51 for 465 yards without an interception, and his five touchdowns all have come in the second half. Boston College outscored FCS members Maine and Howard 100-3 and has allowed only 102 yards of total offense in its first two games as it tries to upset a ranked opponent at home in its third game for the second straight season after defeating No. 10 USC 37-31.

                        8 p.m. ET, ESPN

                        LINE HISTORY:
Books opened FSU as 8-point road faves, but that is currently FSU --9. The total is down to 46.5 after opening 51.

                        INJURY REPORT:
Florida State - OL Cole Minshew (Out, ankle), DE Chris Casher (Out, knee), DE Lorenzo Featherston (Out indefinitely, knee). Boston College - LB Tim Joy (Questionable, knee).

                        WEATHER:
Temperatures will be in the low-70s with wind blowing from the south at around six miles per our.

                        WHAT CAPPERS SAY:
"Boston College comes into this game with a 2-0 SU record, but the Eagles have played a pair of weak FCS teams. They beat Maine and Howard by a combined score of 100-3, but the Eagles are now taking a monumental step-up in class versus Florida State. Boston College is expected to have a down season, and their first two big wins will not be indicative of how their season will turn out going forward."

"We opened FSU as 9-point faves in this matchup and it has bounced -9 and -8 through the week finally settling in our current number of FSU -8.5 with good two-way action with BC getting 48 percent of that action to cover the spread."

                        ABOUT FLORIDA STATE (2-0 SU, 1-1 ATS, 1-1 O/U):
While the offense has scored on all 11 second-half possessions this season, the defense has held its first two opponents to fewer than 300 yards - an achievement accomplished only three times in 2014. Sophomore defensive back and All-America candidate Jalen Ramsey already has broken up four passes this season - most among ACC players - and allowed only one completion while being targeted 12 times. Sophomore linebacker Ro'Derrick Hoskins recorded seven tackles against USF, and his 10 this season give him a share of the team lead with sophomore linebacker Jacob Pugh.

                        ABOUT BOSTON COLLEGE (2-0 SU, 1-1 ATS, 1-1 O/U):
The Eagles tried to simulate the Seminoles' speed by pitting their top units against each other at Monday's practice. "There can’t be a bunch of mistakes, a bunch of penalties. You can’t get shocked by the speed of the game,” coach Steve Addazio said at his weekly press conference. Boston College didn't get the feel of a big-time game in its 76-0 victory Howard last week in a contest shortened to 10-minute quarters in the second half by mutual agreement.

                        TRENDS:

                        * Over is 4-1 in the last five meetings in Boston College.
                        * Seminoles are 2-5 ATS in their last seven meetings.
                        * Eagles are 5-2 ATS in their last seven conference games.
                        * Over is 6-1 in Seminoles' last seven road games.

                        CONSENSUS:
Fifty-three percent of users are backing Florida State.

                          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Saturday's college football Top 25 betting cheat sheet: Week 3
                          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

UCLA's freshman quarterback Josh Rosen has completed 64.9 percent of his passes for 574 yards, four touchdowns and an interception.

We break down all the need-to-know facts and figures for Saturday's Top 25 NCAAF contests.

Tulsa Golden Hurricane at (17) Oklahoma Sooners (-31, 71.5)

                          * Tulsa has averaged 43.5 points and 609 total yards (sixth nationally) while winning their first two games (1-1 ATS) under first-year coach Philip Montgomery, the former offensive coordinator at Baylor.

                          * Oklahoma leads the series 19-7-1 and has won the last eight meetings. The Sooners have gone 6-1-1 against the spread in those previous eight meetings.

Connecticut Huskies at (20) Missouri Tigers (-21.5, 41.5)

                          * UConn has not won on the road since a victory at Temple on Nov. 23, 2013. The Huskies are 0-5 straight up and 1-4 against the spread away from home during that time (including one neutral site game).

                          * The Tigers have leaned on a defense that leads the SEC in total defense (209 yards per game) and scoring defense (11.5 points per game). Reigning SEC Defensive Player of the Week Kentrell Brothers has anchored Missouri’s defense thus far, racking up 32 tackles, a blocked punt and two fourth-quarter interceptions that helped the Tigers limit Arkansas State to 37 total yards in the second half last week.

Nevada Wolf Pack at (18) Texas A&M Aggies (-34, 65)

                          * The Wolf Pack, who opened the season with a 31-17 victory over FCS school UC Davis have struggled offensively and rank 90th nationally in scoring (25.5) and 99th in total offense (361 yards per game). Junior quarterback Tyler Stewart is completing just 59.6 percent of his passes and has thrown for just 322 yards and three touchdowns in two games.

                          * Texas A&M has won 18 straight nonconference games -- longest streak in the FBS -- dating back to a 42-38 loss in 2011 to then nonconference foe Arkansas. They are 12-6 against the spread in those games.

Air Force Falcons at (4) Michigan State Spartans (-26, 55)

                          * The Falcons must make a change at quarterback after starter Nate Romine was lost for the season with a knee injury in last week’s game. They now turn to senior quarterback Karson Roberts, who attempted 41 passes and rushed for 253 yards in 2013 before playing sparingly last season.

                          * Michigan State has scored 68 points in its first two games and at least 30 in a school-record 10 straight, led by Heisman Trophy candidate quarterback Connor Cook. The Over has gone 7-3 over the course of those 10 games.

                          (24) Northwestern Wildcats at Duke Blue Devils (-3.5, 48)

                          * Northwestern followed up its Week 1 win over Stanford with a 41-0 victory over Eastern Illinois, prompting some confident comments from the players. “We expect to have a shutout next week (against Duke),” defensive lineman Ifeadi Odenigbo told the Chicago Tribune.

                          * Duke quarterback Thomas Sirk piled up 604 yards passing and 154 more on the ground with a total of six touchdowns in the first two games and has yet to commit a turnover. “We have a scoring mentality on every play,” Sirk told reporters. “We’re trying to get the ball down the field. It doesn’t matter what it is, we’re just trying to get it in the end zone.”

Georgia State Panthers at (13) Oregon Ducks (-44.5, 72)

                          * One week after a 2,600-mile round trip to New Mexico State, the Panthers will make a 4,200-mile round trip to play the Ducks.

                          * Thanks to a Vernon Adams' broken index finger on his throwing hand, Oregon may choose to play backup quarterback Jeff Lockie in advance of the team’s Pac-12 opener next week against Utah. Regardless of which Ducks signal-caller is taking the snaps, the challenge should not be anywhere near as difficult this week against the Panthers, who outlasted New Mexico State 34-32 for their first victory against a FBS school.

Troy Trojans at (23) Wisconsin Badgers (-34.5, 58)

                          * Troy, which has never faced Wisconsin, is winless in seven games against Big Ten teams and 1-20 against ranked opponents since becoming an FBS program in 2001.

                          * Wisconsin has never had a season in which it has thrown more often than run since the post-World War II era of college football began in 1946, but this edition of the Badgers has done exactly that through their first two games, attempting 75 passes versus 66 runs. The move to a more balanced offense has Wisconsin averaging 245.5 passing yards through two games, just over 11 yards ahead of the school-record pace set by the Russell Wilson-led Badgers four years ago.

Texas-San Antonio Roadrunners at (25) Oklahoma State Cowboys (-24.5, 55.5)

                          * UTSA's young defense is allowing an average of 36 points and 5.5 plays that go for at least 20 yards through two games.

                          * No. 25 Oklahoma State has a list of things to work on when the Cowboys host winless UTSA on Saturday to make an explosive offensive even more potent before Big 12 Conference play begins. Cowboy coaches keep track of rush yards per carry, explosive plays, turnovers and negative plays for each game - and there is room for improvement despite a 2-0 start.

                          (15) Auburn Tigers at (14) LSU Tigers (-6.5, 48)

                          * Auburn will have three freshmen, a sophomore and a pair of transfers in the rotation of defensive backs on Saturday. “We're always talking to our team about the next man up, about that No. 2 or No. 3 guy,” Auburn coach Gus Malzahn told reporters. “You've got to be prepared when you're called upon, and we're going to be counting on some young guys. The positive with that is you've got a chance to grow and get better.”

                          * LSU ran for a total of 266 yards in the win against Mississippi State last weekend while holding the Bulldogs to 43 on the ground. Heisman candidate Leonard Fournette was not so explosive at Auburn last season, when he was held to 42 yards on 10 carries in a game LSU lost 41-7.

Northern Illinois Huskies at (1) Ohio State Buckeyes (-34.5, 66.5)

                          * Northern Illinois has won its last three games against Big Ten schools, defeating Northwestern, Purdue and Iowa, and has won 11 or more games in each of the past five seasons. The Huskies are 3-0 ATS in those games versus the Big Ten.

                          * Junior Cardale Jones will be the starting quarterback for the third straight game but Buckeyes coach Urban Meyer wasn't thrilled with the play of Jones or sophomore J.T. Barrett in the 38-0 trouncing of Hawaii last Saturday. "I think we have two excellent quarterbacks and I expect them to play very well," Meyer said at a press conference. "Neither of them played very well. Disappointment - I don't like that word. We've just got to better prepare them."

                          (16) Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets at (10) Notre Dame Fighting Irish (+2.5, 55)

                          * The Yellow Jackets average the fewest penalty yards (12) in the nation through the first two weeks.

                          * DeShone Kizer came on in relief of Zaire (fractured ankle) last week and tossed a pair of touchdown passes, including the game-winner with 12 seconds left in a 34-27 victory at Virginia. “I think DeShone will do quite well,” Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly told reporters. “We'll just feature some of the things that he does a little bit better than maybe - or that are considered his strengths as a quarterback and feature those.”

South Carolina Gamecocks at (8) Georgia Bulldogs (-16.5, 52)

                          * South Carolina lost Connor Mitch to a sprained right shoulder during last week’s 26-22 upset loss to Kentucky, thrusting Perry Orth into the first significant game action of the junior’s career.

                          * Georgia running back Nick Chubb is off to a dazzling start to his sophomore season, averaging 8.8 yards per carry while accumulating 309 yards through two games.

Southern Methodist Mustangs at (3) TCU Horned Frogs (-37.5, 66)

                          * The Mustangs allowed 723 total yards in a 56-21 loss to Baylor to open the season but forced four turnovers and held North Texas to 240 yards in last week's win.

                          * Third-ranked TCU will continue to piece together a defense when it hosts SMU on Saturday after scrambling to fill openings during the season's first two weeks. Coach Gary Patterson told the media Wednesday that starting defensive tackle Davion Pierson would miss his third straight game after giving Pierson's return from an undisclosed injury a chance Monday.

Stanford Cardinal at (7) USC Trojans (-9.5, 50)

                          * Stanford’s young secondary could struggle against the Trojans’ wide receivers, but linebackers Blake Martinez, Peter Kalambayi and Kevin Anderson should help limit the damage. Stanford has held USC to 68.3 rushing yards per game and 2.3 yards per carry in the last three games between the teams.

                          * USC rolled past Arkansas State and Idaho by a combined score of 114-15 as senior quarterback Cody Kessler launched his Heisman Trophy campaign by throwing seven touchdowns with no interceptions. The Trojans are 2-0 ATS to begin the season.

                          (11) Ole Miss Rebels at (2) Alabama Crimson Tide (-6.5, 53.5)

                          * The Rebels returned most of the key parts from last year’s outstanding defense, but the offense was something of a question. Quarterback Chad Kelly (557 yards, 6 TDs, 1 INT) has provided a resounding answer, and the Rebels have surrounded him with numerous weapons.

                          * Alabama has scored in the first half of 105 consecutive games, the longest active streak in the nation, and has gone 185 consecutive games without being shut out.

                          (22) BYU Cougars at (12) UCLA Bruins (-16.5, 60)

                          * The Cougars have attracted UCLA’s attention with their physical style of play and, at times, below-the-belt methods. Defensive lineman Ului Lapuaho will be allowed to play against the Bruins despite being caught punching a Boise State player in the groin last weekend. Also last week, safety Kai Nacua returned from a one-game suspension as a result of a brawl at the end of the Miami Beach Bowl last December and made three interceptions to earn National Defensive Player of the Week honors.

                          * The Bruins' offensive line received good news this week when center Jake Brendel - who missed the second half against UNLV with a bruised foot - was given the go-ahead to play this week, but fellow offensive lineman Tevita Halalilo broke a bone in his leg late in the game and will miss three months.

                          (21) Utah Utes at Fresno State Bulldogs (+14, 54)

                          * Utah’s offense has scored on all seven of its red-zone opportunities this season, scoring five touchdowns and making two field goals.

                          * The Bulldogs are 18-2 at home under coach Tim DeRuyter but haven’t hosted many teams as talented as the Utes, who have won eight straight non-conference games - including a 24-17 season-opening victory over Michigan.

Northern Arizona Lumberjacks at (19) Arizona Wildcats (Off, Off)

                          * The Lumberjacks, who opened the season with a 34-28 win at Stephen F. Austin, cracked the FCS Top 25 for the first time this season after defeating New Mexico Highlands, 41-5, at home, coming in at No. 24 in both the FCS Coaches' poll and STATS Top 25 poll.

                          * The Wildcats, who cruised to a 44-20 victory at Nevada last week and open conference play next week against 12th-ranked UCLA, have one pretty simple goal for this one: stay healthy. Arizona has been hit hard by the injury bug, especially at middle linebacker where All-American and reigning Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Year Scooby Wright will miss his second straight game following surgery to repair torn meniscus in his left knee.

Game of the Day: Ole Miss at Alabama
                            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Rebels are 7-3 against the spread in their last 10 meetings with the Alabama Crimson Tide.

Ole Miss Rebels at Alabama Crimson Tide (-7, 53)

Ole Miss is putting up eye-popping offensive numbers through two games, but the 11th-ranked Rebels will face a stiffer test when they travel to No. 2 Alabama for an SEC West showdown on Saturday. The Crimson Tide have never lost back-to-back games in the series and are 25-1 at home against the Rebels.

Last year’s 23-17 home win over top-ranked Alabama marked Ole Miss’ first in the long-running series since 2003. A repeat performance would validate the Rebels’ red-hot start – they’ve outscored their first two opponents 149-24 – and perhaps make them the favorites in the SEC West. Alabama quietly dispatched Wisconsin 35-17 in its opener before cruising to a 37-10 win over Middle Tennessee last week and will have a raucous home crowd fueled by the hype of hosting ESPN’s College GameDay. The Crimson Tide have won 17 consecutive home games, tied with Baylor for the longest active streak in the nation.

                            TV:
                            9:15 p.m. ET, ESPN.

                            LINE HISTORY:
Books opened Alabama -6.5, but that has moved since moved to -7. The total opened at 49 and has gone up four points to 53.

                            INJURY REPORT:
Ole Miss - DB C.J. Hampton (Probable, suspension), DB Tee Shepard (Probable, suspension). Alabama - DB Jabriel Washington (Mid October, knee).

                            WEATHER:
Temperatures will be in the mid-70s under clear skies. Wind will be minimal, blowing toward the south end zone at around two miles per hour.

                            WHAT CAPPERS SAY:
"The Rebels have scored 70+ points in each of their first two games of the season, but they face a much tougher test on the road in Tuscaloosa this week. Remember they upset Alabama in a 23-17 home win last year. Derrick Henry has 243 yards and six TDs in just two games so far, and the Crimson Tide defense has looked as good as ever. There is still a question mark at quarterback though, as neither Jake Coker or Cooper Bateman have played particularly well."

                            WHAT BOOKS SAY:
"Sharp money on the dog and under. We've taken a higher volume of wagers on the over and 'Bama but as far as handle, we are very even because the wiseguys are on the dog and under.

                            ABOUT OLE MISS (2-0 SU, 2-0 ATS, 2-0 O/U):
The Rebels returned most of the key parts from last year’s outstanding defense, but the offense was something of a question. Quarterback Chad Kelly (557 yards, 6 TDs, 1 INT) has provided a resounding answer, and the Rebels have surrounded him with numerous weapons. The outrageous offensive output has overshadowed the defense, which has lived up to expectations thus far by holding opponents to 303 yards per game even with reserves getting plenty of playing time during mop-up duty.

                            ABOUT ALABAMA (2-0 SU, 1-1 ATS, 1-1 O/U):
The Crimson Tide have held their first two opponents under 300 total yards and have been especially stingy against the run, allowing 63 yards per game on the ground. Alabama has enjoyed the luxury of being rather one-dimensional on offense with Derrick Henry (243 yards, 6 TDs) and Kenyan Drake (117 yards, 1 TD) carrying the load. Quarterback Jake Coker (427 yards, 2 TDs, 1 INT) might be asked to do more in order to keep pace with Ole Miss’ high-powered attack.

                            TRENDS:

                            * Under is 4-0 in the last four meetings in Alabama.
                            * Rebels are 7-3 ATS in their last 10 meetings.
                            * Under is 9-1 in Rebels last 10 conference games.
                            * Over is 4-1 in Crimson Tide last 5 games overall.

                            CONSENSUS:
Fifty-six percent of users are backing the Crimson Tide.

Strong chance of rain at The Big House Saturday

According to weather forecasts, there is an 84 percent chance of rain in Ann Arbor as the Michigan Wolverines host the UNLV Rebels at The Big House Saturday afternoon.

Furthermore, wind could play an impact as gusts of up 19 miles per hour across the field are expected.

The Wolverines are presently pegged as 34.5-point home faves and the total is 48 after opening 49.5.

Texas A&M Aggies rolling in nonconference games

Texas A&M has won 18 straight nonconference games -- longest streak in the FBS -- dating back to a 42-38 loss in 2011 to then nonconference foe Arkansas.

The Aggies have fared quite well at the betting window in those games as they've gone 12-6 against the spread in that spot.

The Nevada Wolf Pack visit College Station Saturday afternoon with the Aggies pegged as 33.5-point home favorites.

Stellar defense has Under cashing in Mizzou games

The Missouri Tigers have leaned on a defense that leads the SEC in total defense (209 yards per game) and scoring defense (11.5 points per game). Thanks to that defense, Under bettors have cashed tickets in each of their first two Mizzou games.

The Tigers host UConn as 22.5-point home favorites Saturday afternoon and the total currently sits at 41.5 after opening 42.5.

Tulsa racking up yards under Montgomery

The Tulsa Golden Hurricane have averaged 43.5 points and 609 total yards (sixth nationally) while winning their first two games under first-year coach Philip Montgomery, the former offensive coordinator at Baylor.

Tulsa heads into its Week 3 meeting at Oklahoma with a 1-1 record against the spread and Over/Under. The program is presently 30-point road underdogs in Norman and books have the total at 71.5.
