NCAAF Opening Line Report: Buckeyes open with another crack at the Hokies

A year ago this week, Ohio State was 1-0, ranked No. 7 in the nation and full of high hopes, despite having already lost star quarterback Braxton Miller for the season.

But unranked Virginia Tech, a 10-point road underdog, bounced the Buckeyes 35-21. By the end of the season, Ohio State was on its third quarterback, Cardale Jones.

Oh, and the Buckeyes were also national champions, having vanquished Oregon 42-20 in the title game to cap the first year that the Football Bowl Subdivision had a playoff. Indeed, Ohio State’s only loss (14-1 SU, 10-5 ATS) was against VaTech – and the Buckeyes will get another crack at the Hokies on Sept. 7 in Blacksburg, in a contest that wraps up the first week of the 2015 season.

Johnny Avello, executive director of race and sports for Wynn Las Vegas, likes the look of Ohio State, pegging the Buckeyes a 12-point chalk.

“We all know that Ohio State is loaded. Even with the absence of defensive end Joey Bosa (suspension), they're still loaded,” Avello said. “Virginia Tech returns 16 starters from last year’s 7-6 team (6-7 ATS), but coach Frank Beamer's teams have been underachievers the last three seasons.”

One thing Avello isn’t putting much stock in: an Ohio State desire to avenge its only blemish from 2014.

“I'm not putting a revenge factor into this one, because who needs revenge when you've won the national championship?”

Wisconsin Badgers vs. Alabama Crimson Tide (-10)

Part of a full first Saturday next weekend, this matchup is technically on a neutral field – AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. But it’s a hefty trip for the No. 20 Badgers, and the third-ranked Crimson Tide have been perennial national title contenders for several years now, winning it all in 2009, 2011 and 2012.

“The Badgers are going to be a good squad, but this is a tough opening act to start the season,” Avello said. “They also have a new coach (Gary Andersen), so it may take time to get to their full potential.”

‘Bama went 12-2 SU in 2014 (but a dismal 5-9 ATS), losing to Ohio State 42-35 as a 7.5-point chalk in the national semifinals. Wisconsin (11-3 SU, 6-8 ATS in 2014) edged Auburn 34-31 in the Outback Bowl catching 5.5 points to cap its 2014 campaign.

“Alabama is Alabama. It's hard to find fault with a team that’s won the national championship three times since 2009,” Avello said. “But with multiple new players in starting roles on offense, the Tide may need a few games to get rolling.”

Michigan Wolverines at Utah Utes (-5.5)

It’s a Thursday night kickoff in the debut for Wolverines coach Jim Harbaugh, who played quarterback for Michigan back in the 1980s. But Michigan is coming off a 5-7 SU and ATS campaign (which explains the new coach), while the Utes were 9-4 SU and ATS last year.

“Michigan is most likely a year or two away from competing for the Big Ten's top spot or a national title, but with that being said, look for significant improvement from the Wolverines,” Avello said. “Playing on the road has been extremely difficult the last seven years for Michigan, with only 11 wins in 33 attempts.

“Utah has seven starters back on both offense and defense and should be as good as last year's team. But I expect Michigan money closer to game time, and the house will probably need the favorite.”

Texas Longhorns at Notre Dame Fighting Irish (-10)

The Longhorns, coming off a meager 6-7 season (7-6 ATS), are looking to restore their brand name, while the Fighting Irish won their first six games last season, then limped to an 8-5 SU finish (6-7 ATS).

“Last year's record is tough to swallow in Longhorns country. They did show signs of life toward the end of the season, but the quarterback position was just too inconsistent,” Avello said. “The Irish on paper look very good, especially on defense, where almost everybody returns. I expect a correction after they allowed an average of 30 points a game last season.”

            Week 1 Betting Moves

            August 25, 2015

Auburn vs. Louisville (Georgia Dome in Atlanta)

The Westgate opened Auburn as a 10.5-point favorite. The betting shop shifted to -11 on August 6 before adjusting to 11.5 on August 8. However, the line moved back to 11 on August 22 and was back at 10.5 by August 23. The total is 58.5 at most offshore books.

U of L head coach Bobby Petrino was once the offensive coordinator at Auburn. Then a few years later during his first stint as HC for the Cardinals, he notoriously conducted a secret meeting with the Auburn AD to discuss his pal Tommy Tuberville's job. Tuberville ended up keeping his job, the AD lost his and Chapter 1 of Petrino's storied history of being a terrible human being was written.

            Ohio State at Virginia Tech

Back in early June before any Vegas shops had numbers posted, 5Dimes had Ohio State as a 20.5-point road favorite. The Westgate opened the Buckeyes as 13-point 'chalk.' However, when the suspensions of four players including All-American LB Joey Bosa were announced on July 30, the number was adjusted to 10.

The line would bounce around from 10 to 11 for a week, only to climb up to 11.5 at the Westgate on August 19. The Wynn settled at -12 on the same day. The total is in the 54-55 range at offshore books.

            Georgia Southern at West Virginia

The Westgate opened West Virginia at -18. Five days later, it moved to 18.5 but on August 8, the number was moved a whole point to -17.5. Then on August 19, Georgia Southern announced a two-game suspension for starting QB Kevin Ellison, who rushed for 1,096 yards and 12 TDs when the Eagles went 9-3 last season.

The Ellison news prompted the Westgate to move WVU to -20. Since then, nearly every book has settled at -19.5. Since 2011, Georgia Southern owns a 5-0 spread record in double-digit road 'dog situations.

            Stanford at Northwestern

The Westgate had Stanford at -11.5 to open on July 25. The number moved to 12 on August 6 before going to 12.5 two days later. The total (45) is the second-lowest on the Week 1 board behind only Penn State vs. Temple (39).

            Duke at Tulane

The Westgate opened Duke at -9 on July 25. Then on August 6, the Blue Devils moved to 9.5 and went up to the key number of 10 on August 11. By August 17, however, the Westgate adjusted back down to 9.5.

As for the Wynn, it opened David Cutcliffe's squad as a 10-point 'chalk' on August 1. Seventeen days later, the book abruptly adjusted Duke down to -9 before going back up to 9.5 on August 19.

Several offshores have had the total posted, with it wavering in the 47-48 range.

            Baylor at Southern Methodist

The Westgate opened Baylor as an enormous 33.5-point favorite for its trip to SMU. The number has been steadily climbing since then, moving to 34 on July 30, then to 34.5 on August 6, before settling at 35 on August 19.

On August 24, several spots including the Wynn and the Westgate adjusted the Bears to 35.5-point 'chalk.' They smashed the Mustangs by a 45-0 count as 34-point home favorites in last year's opener.

            **B.E.'s Bonus Nuggets**

-- As always, be aware that any team on the board might have some last-minute suspensions before their respective openers. Coaches are often coy about one-game suspensions that are usually based upon positive tests for weed during the offseason.

-- For those handicapping Nebraska's opener against BYU, keep in mind that both teams are dealing with personnel issues galore. BYU star RB Jamaal Williams has left the team and expected starting TE Steven Richards went down with a season-ending injury earlier this week. Most important, the Cougars are going to have "10ish" players suspended against the Cornhuskers due to the brawl at the conclusion of last year's bowl game against Memphis. Also, Nebraska has suspended five players for the game. The players haven't been named but according to a report out of Lincoln, only one is a starter and he's a defensive player. Finally, Nebraska WR and special-teams ace De'Mornay Pierson-El could miss the next eight weeks with a foot injury. Pierson-El had 23 receptions for 321 yards and four touchdowns as a true freshman last year. Also, he had three punt returns for TDs and averaged 17.5 yards per return.

-- Vanderbilt lost its second offensive starter for the season last Thursday when offensive tackle Andrew Jelks went down with a knee injury. Jelks, a junior, started 22 games in 2013 and 2014. The Commodores already lost WR C.J. Duncan, who had 28 receptions for 441 yards and four TDs as a true freshman last year.

-- Wake Forest junior WR Jared Crump is done for the year after shredding his ACL. Crump had 32 catches for 339 yards and one TD in 2014.

-- Oklahoma named Texas Tech transfer Baker Mayfield its Week 1 starter on Monday. Bob Stoops' hire of former East Carolina offensive coordinator Lincoln Riley is going to work wonders for the Sooners' offense.

-- Florida has suspended three players for its opener against New Mexico State. WR Latroy Pittman, DE Alex McCalister and safety Marcus Maye won't dress out against the Aggies. McCalister was second on the team in sacks last year with six. The Gators are 36.5-point home favorites.

              Spurrier dealing with offensive unknowns

              August 30, 2015

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) So Steve Spurrier finally settled on South Carolina's starting quarterback. He just wishes that was his only question on offense.

The coach went with third-year sophomore Connor Mitch for Thursday night's opener against North Carolina, and the third-year sophomore is one of several variables on the offensive side of the ball.

Junior Pharoh Cooper is the lone receiver with significant experience and perhaps the only player on offense with any star power. There are worries at running back after Mike Davis left for the NFL and at tight end where starter Jarrell Adams has just three career touchdowns despite playing 26 games the past two seasons.

''Yeah, a lot of unknowns,'' Spurrier said Sunday.

Spurrier has had a productive - at times, dynamic - offense the past five seasons, scoring 30 points or more 36 times in his last 66 games. Much of that came from all-Southeastern Conference performers on offense like receivers Alshon Jeffery and Bruce Ellington, and tailbacks Marcus Lattimore and Davis.

When it comes to Spurrier's quarterbacks, Stephen Garcia helped the Gamecocks to an upset of No. 1 Alabama and an SEC Eastern Division title in 2010. Connor Shaw became the winningest quarterback in team history with a 27-5 mark between 2010 and 2013.

Even last year, Dylan Thompson set a school record with 3,564 yards passing for an offense that averaged 442 yards during a 7-6 season.

Spurrier has little to fall back on besides Cooper, who had 1,030 yards receiving a year ago.

''We're all waiting to see what happens,'' Spurrier said.

Mitch is a 6-foot-3 passer with a traditional drop-back style. He beat out three others during the summer competition that Spurrier let continue through most of camp because of the inexperience of the contenders.

Mitch sees himself as a low-key guy who will spend his time leading the offense rather than rattling off past accomplishments.

''Just be the leader of the offense, making sure everybody goes where they need to, keep the ball moving and score points,'' Mitch said. ''You always have to have faith in yourself as the leader of the offense.''

Mitch will have to find other targets besides Cooper, who is guaranteed to attract maximum attention from opposing defenses.

Spurrier said Deebo Samuel and Carlton Heard will start at the other receiver positions against North Carolina. Neither player has caught a pass in college.

The Gamecocks will look to Brandon Wilds and David Williams to pick up the running game from Davis, the team's top rusher the past two seasons now with the San Francisco 49ers.

Wilds is a fifth-year player who had 570 yards rushing last year, his best career showing. Williams ran for 256 yards as a third back in 2014.

''We have confidence both those players are very good and ready to play,'' Spurrier said. ''We will certainly try to run the ball against North Carolina, I think they know that.''

Unless, Spurrier added, the Gamecocks can break free over the middle with the 6-6 Adams, a senior who was expected to have a bigger impact on the team than he has had so far. Spurrier said Adams will miss the next practice because of a hamstring pull but should be able to play against the Tar Heels.

These teams opened the season in 2013 with Shaw leading the Gamecocks to a 27-10 victory at Williams-Brice Stadium. North Carolina coach Larry Fedora said his team has made strides since then.

''We got some more pieces to the puzzle put together,'' Fedora said. ''We've got some more depth that we didn't have then.''

North Carolina's defense was 117th nationally a year ago, allowing more than 497 yards a game.

Spurrier hopes his inexperienced offense can begin to find its stride this week.

''It's going to be interesting up there'' in Charlotte, Spurrier said.

                Vols' freshman Phillips standing out

                August 30, 2015

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) Tennessee defensive end Kyle Phillips is quite familiar with Nashville's Nissan Stadium, the site of the 25th-ranked Volunteers' season opener.

Nissan Stadium serves as the home field for both the NFL's Tennessee Titans and Football Championship Subdivision program Tennessee State, where Phillips' mother is the athletic director. As a youngster, Phillips and his brother would run onto the field in Tennessee State uniforms before each home game.

''His head was too weak to really hold the helmet on, (so) his head would be bobbling as he ran across the field,'' Teresa Phillips said.

Phillips has grown up quite a bit since.

Throughout the preseason, Phillips has garnered perhaps as much praise as any member of the Vols' heralded freshman class. The Vols open the season Saturday against Bowling Green in that same stadium where he spent so many childhood weekends.

''It was fun, just (as) little kids running around and being goofy with big uniforms on and running in front of the team,'' Phillips said. ''I loved doing that when I was growing up. Now the real thing's coming. I'm excited.''

Tennessee played 23 true freshmen last season to lead all Football Bowl Subdivision teams and expects to use the majority of this year's class as well.

Darrin Kirkland Jr. is competing for a starting spot at middle linebacker. Jauan Jennings has made a remarkable transition from quarterback to wide receiver. Many more newcomers could make an immediate impact on both the offensive and defensive lines as well as on special teams.

''Just about everyone in our (freshman) class will play,'' Tennessee coach Butch Jones said.

Working behind double-digit sack producers Derek Barnett and Curt Maggitt at defensive end, Phillips has won raves for his work habits and ability.

''He has a tenacity about himself,'' Jones said. ''He plays with a relentless approach to get to the football. He's really been challenged by Derek and Curt. I think he really watches their style of play, and he wants that.''

Phillips has possessed that tenacity for many years. Back when he was running onto the field with Tennessee State's team as a kid, he and his brother often spent the rest of the game playing on the sidelines and re-enacting what they saw on the field.

But he actually preferred basketball growing up. His mom, a former Vanderbilt basketball player and Tennessee State coach, talked him into playing football.

''When you watched him play basketball, he was like a football player out on the basketball court, just knocking folks around and getting four fouls in the first quarter or something and always thinking he hadn't done anything,'' Teresa Phillips said. ''He had great footwork, which I thought would benefit him on the football field. I knew he had speed. Everybody in my family has long arms. I just felt like the strength that he had athletically would translate over to the football field a lot better.''

Phillips eventually developed into a player rated as a five-star prospect. His progress surprised even himself.

''It was a shock to me,'' Phillips said. ''I didn't know I was capable of being that good on the field. I love to compete, so I knew I wasn't going to be bad, but I didn't know I would be as good as I am now.''

All the while, Phillips' mother has served as one of his toughest critics, offering pointers after each game on what he could have done better.

That constructive criticism apparently paid off. The kid who used to accompany Tennessee State's team onto the field is ready to begin his actual college playing career.

''I still remember that little boy with the head bobbling because the helmet was too heavy for him to hold up on his head,'' Teresa Phillips said. ''But he's not going to be that same kid coming out (this time). I'm going to be a proud mama.''

UW keeps starting QB quiet until opener

                  August 30, 2015

SEATTLE (AP) Washington coach Chris Petersen is keeping his starting quarterback a secret until taking the field for Friday night's season opener at No. 23 Boise State.

Petersen said Sunday the Huskies decided the best move for their program was withholding the name of their starting quarterback, in part to limit distractions heading into the opener. Junior Jeff Lindquist, redshirt freshman K.J. Carta-Samuels and true freshman Jake Browning competed for the job during fall camp.

Lindquist is the only one of the three with experience, starting last year's season opener against Hawaii. Browning has gained the most attention after setting national high school records at Folsom High just outside of Sacramento, California. Browning enrolled at Washington in January and because he got the experience of going through spring practice, Petersen says he doesn't view Browning as a true freshman.

                    August 30, 2015

New Year's rockin' eve will have a whole new meaning in 2016.

The semifinals of the second College Football Playoff will be played on Dec. 31 because college football can never be simple.

Last year's first college football final four was played on New Year's Day and drew record-breaking television ratings as fans gladly melted into their couches for Oregon-Florida State in the Rose Bowl, followed by Ohio State-Alabama in the Sugar Bowl.

                    Frankly, it was perfect.

So of course it is changing. Hey, you can't just move the Rose Bowl game. What will people do after the parade?

The fact is no matter when the games are played you will watch. And New Year's Eve is overrated anyway.

Who will reach the playoff and the rest of the New Year's Six bowls? Here's an educated guess.

How do schools calculate new stipends

                      August 30, 2015

For the first time, the NCAA is allowing college athletes to receive money in their scholarships to cover the so-called cost of attendance, those expenses beyond tuition, room and board, books and fees that come with attending school.

Depending on the school, it could mean an extra $1,500 to as much as $6,000 for an athlete.

For decades, universities and colleges have been required by the U.S. Department of Education to make public a good-faith estimate on cost of attendance.

But the arrival of cost of attendance stipends, and the fact that their value varies greatly from school to school, has some coaches - notably Alabama's Nick Saban and Clemson's Dabo Swinney - and fans worried. They are concerned about competitive balance and schools inflating their figures to give out bigger bucks to athletes.

Also, as Virginia Tech coaches showed this week, some seem a little confused about how it works. Hokies defensive coordinator Bud Foster talked about fining players for minor transgressions out of their cost of attendance money. Not so fast. The NCAA has rules prohibiting schools from withholding scholarship funds.

It has been a learning experience on campuses this summer.

''We are working to try to continuously reinforce what those numbers are and where they came from and what it really does cover,'' said Maggie McKinley, senior associate athletic director for the University of Cincinnati.

To help cut through the confusion, here are some answers from experts about cost of attendance.

Q: Who calculates cost of attendance and how is it regulated on campus?

                      A: The financial aid office.

                      Q: How is a cost-of-attendance figure used?

A: The calculation serves two purposes. It gives those paying for college a realistic expectation of what they will spend. Even more important, it sets a limit on the amount of financial aid a student can receive during an academic year.

Q: What expenses are factored into cost of attendance?

A: ''It's really divided into what we consider direct costs, what (a student) will have to pay directly to the university, and then other indirect costs that they might incur, like obviously they're going to have to do laundry,'' said Jeff Gerkin, assistant dean and director of financial aid at the University of Tennessee.

Tennessee's cost of attendance increase adds $5,666 to an athletic scholarship, most in the SEC.

Direct costs include tuition, fees, room and board and books.

Indirect costs include travel and other miscellaneous personal expenses, which could cover clothes, entertainment, food and sundries.

Gerkin said travel often accounts for most of the indirect costs. At Tennessee, three round trips from Knoxville, in the northeast part of the state, to Memphis, in the southwest corner, are used to set a baseline figure.

Q: How are miscellaneous costs calculated?

A: There is some subjectivity here, but financial aid officials are not just pulling numbers out of the air. The figures are research-based. ''To help determine this figure, we use resources such as the College Board, U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, costs from local and national businesses and/or student surveys,'' said Richard Ritzman, director of financial aid at the University of Memphis.

For Memphis, the cost of attendance increase to an athletic scholarship will be $5,373 per year. Miscellaneous costs accounted for $1,983, Ritzman said.

''What a student will actually spend on miscellaneous will depend on the lifestyle of each student,'' Ritzman said.

So, yes, students can use that money any way they want - but then they will have to explain to Mom and Dad why they needed to hit them up for new shoes.

Q: Does every student at a school have the same cost of attendance?

A: No. ''Institutions can have a wide array of cost of attendance figures in terms of various classifications of students that they want to target,'' Gerkin said. ''So some schools may have a lot of very specific cost of attendance across a broad category of students or they may use averages that the majority of students that fall into those categories are assessed those costs.''

Generally, most schools have a different cost of attendance for in-state students and out-of-state students. The cost of attendance can also vary for undergraduate and graduate students. Individual students can also petition a school to have their cost of attendance increased.

The SEC has passed a rule that requires its schools to report how miscellaneous expenses are determined and any instances when an individual's cost of attendance varies from the norm at a school.

Q: How often does a school's cost of attendance change?

A: Most schools make adjustments from year-to-year.

Q: Could athletic departments try to have the cost of attendance raised as a way to benefit recruiting?

A: Corruption is always possible, but the financial aid office crunches the numbers and they must be approved at the upper levels of administration.

''Our numbers are vetted through our provost office which is over on the academic side of the house along with our chancellor's office,'' Gerkin said. ''We've received no undue pressure.''

Inflating the numbers to help recruiting could do far more harm to a school. Too much borrowing can lead to borrowers defaulting on their loans and that can be a problem for schools.

''If too many of our students were to default on their student loan as they go through the repayment period that does reflect back on the institution and could hamper the institution and our eligibility as a whole to provide financial aid to students,'' Gerkin said.

NCAAF Line Watch: Grab Arizona State's spread now

Each week during the college football season, Covers Expert Steve Merril looks at the NCAAF odds and tells you which spread to bet now, which one to bet later and which total to watch as the week plays out.

Spread to bet now: Arizona State +3 (vs. Texas A&M)

There hasn’t been any movement on this game as of yet; Texas A&M opened -3 and that’s where the line currently sits. But I expect money to show on Arizona State in this game, so taking the Sun Devils at +3 now may be a prudent move to make.

My raw power ratings actually rate Arizona State slightly higher than Texas A&M, and I don’t think the Aggies should be given more than a point or two for home field since this game will be played in Houston. That means there is value on Arizona State based on my numbers, and since I think the two teams are basically even after adjusting for location, grab the +3 now on the Sun Devils before the line drops.

Spread to wait on: Bowling Green +20.5 (vs. Tennessee)

Tennessee opened as 21-point favorites over Bowling Green, and a little early money has nudged the line down to -20.5 in favor of the Volunteers. However, I expect money to come in on Tennessee from the public bettors closer to kickoff.

Bowling Green returns 10 starters from a fantastic offense that averaged 30 points per game on 433 yards of offense last season. The Falcons can score points, so that makes them a dangerous underdog in this pointspread range. This game will be played in Nashville, and that lessens Tennessee’s home field advantage. Wait and take Bowling Green +21 or more in this game.

                        Total to watch: Wisconsin/Alabama 50

Wisconsin and Alabama are both similar teams in that they are heavily reliant on running the football and playing excellent defense to win. The total opened around 53.5, and it was quickly bet down to the current number of 50 which is fully understandable.

There are some major question marks on both teams coming into this game. Alabama is young and inexperienced (10 returning starters), but they are obviously super talented. Wisconsin has a new coach in Paul Chryst, and he only has 11 returning starters to work with. The Badgers also have offensive line concerns which will limit their scoring production. This game should be low-scoring, and there’s still value on the Under at the current number.

Michigan State poised for playoff appearance

                          Sep 01, 2015

EAST LANSING, Mich. -- Michigan State coach Mark Dantonio has been hammering home one point since the Spartans rallied to beat Baylor in the Cotton Bowl – his team is selling results.

No longer is it hope, like it was in November of 2006 when Dantonio, then the coach at Cincinnati, took over a Michigan State program that hadn't sniffed any level of consistent success in more than a decade.

The years of mediocrity and inconsistency had left the program with no direction. However, what Dantonio has done in his eight seasons has been nothing short of remarkable, winning 11 or more games in four of the last five seasons.

The Spartans have played in a bowl game in each of those eight season, winning the last four, including the Rose Bowl. They've captured two Big Ten titles and handed Ohio State coach Urban Meyer his only loss against a conference opponent in the 2013 Big Ten title game.

After two straight top-five finishes in the national rankings, Michigan State is among the elite. The Spartans are ranked No. 5 in the preseason Associated Press poll, the same spot they finished last season.

Needless to say, the results speak for themselves.

However, that doesn't mean the Spartans are resting on their laurels. They understand they didn't reach their goals last season, losing to Oregon and Ohio State.

And it doesn't make them feel any better that those were the teams playing in the national title game. They know how good they are, but the want more.

"We're here but we need to go farther," Dantonio said. "We're already up there. We're competing at a very high level. But we need to go a little bit higher to get where we want to be.

"There's no guarantees in any season. You get evaluated at the end of the season and we have our first challenge as we go over to Western Michigan. We'll come ready to play and we'll come fresh."

With a rematch coming next week against Oregon, Dantonio is convinced his team's focus and maturity will be on display when it faces a Western Michigan team that won eight games a year ago.

"Our football team has always done a great job in terms of focusing on the present, focusing on the moment," Dantonio said. "But especially in your first game, I don't think people look too far in advance. Pretty much everybody concentrates on that first game. Our focus is entirely on Western. It has been here since probably late last week. We're looking forward to the moment."

                          PLAYERS TO WATCH

--QB Connor Cook enters his senior season with a 23-3 mark as a starter and has led the Spartans to wins in the Big Ten Championship game as well as Rose Bowl and Cotton Bowl victories. However, he has played in the shadow of the quarterback crew at Ohio State, and might again this season. But that doesn't mean he won't get noticed. After throwing for more than 3,000 yards last season, he is a darkhorse in the Heisman Trophy race and could end up being a high draft pick in the spring. He has a veteran offensive line protecting him and if he has a standout year it could lead the Spartans to a playoff spot.

--RB Madre London has taken control of the running race through preseason camp, bettering sophomore Gerald Holmes and freshman LJ Scott, as well as junior Delton Williams. It's been a tight race to replace Jeremy Langford and it could still end up being a group effort, but at 6-foot-1 and 216 pounds, London has shown the size and speed to be effective and will get the first shot to be the Spartans' main ball carrier.

--S Montae Nicholson started three games last season as a true freshman and has been the talk of preseason camp as he takes over as a full-time starter. At 6-2 and nearly 220 pounds, he certainly has the size but he's also one of the fastest players on the team. He placed in the long jump in the Big Ten indoor track meet last spring and is on the verge of becoming a star in the Michigan State secondary. He's also dabbled on the offensive side of the ball, and a few plays at receiver wouldn't be out of the question.

SERIES HISTORY: Michigan State leads 11-2 (Michigan State won, 26-13, in 2013)

QUOTE TO NOTE: "To me, as long as it's packed, it's all the same. No difference to me. If it's packed, it's all the same. I'm sure it will be packed and there will be a lot of green there. Be exciting." – Dantonio on opening the season at Western Michigan's Waldo Stadium

                            Horned Frogs shooting for perfection

                            Sep 02, 2015

FORT WORTH, TX -- TCU is about to start its chase of the national championship but reminders of last season still haunt the program.

The Horned Frogs were left out of the four-team College Football Playoff and finished with a 12-1 record. The lesson is that there is only one way to ensure a spot.

                            That's to never lose.

"Our key is to control our own destiny and the best way to do that is to try to win them all," TCU coach Gary Patterson told reporters. "That's what we're going to try to get done. Then we'll see how everything else falls."

A 61-58 loss to Baylor kept the Horned Frogs out of the playoffs. The two teams will meet on Nov. 27 in a contest that might keep one team in the national championship picture.

The Horned Frogs began their pursuit with Thursday's season-opening game at Minnesota. The offense is again loaded as 10 starters return, including quarterback Trevone Boykin -- a frontrunner for the Heisman Trophy.

But Boykin isn't interested in resting on his laurels. He's putting subtle pressure on his teammates to make sure they understand there's a lot of work to get done.

"You can always improve," Boykin said. "We weren't perfect last year. If you feel like you've mastered everything, you're wrong. I feel I have plenty of places to improve."

While the offense is solid, TCU is young on defense and it will be the improvement of that unit that will most likely influence the direction of the season.

                            PLAYERS TO WATCH

--QB Trevone Boykin is one of the frontrunners for the Heisman Trophy after setting school records for passing yardage (3,901) and touchdown passes (33) last season. He won Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year honors and he is expected to be even better this season as a senior. Boykin completed 61.2 percent of his passes and was intercepted just 10 times as he thrived in the spread offense. His running skills (707 yards, eight TDs last season) make him doubly difficult to defend.

--WR Josh Doctson had one of the top receiving campaigns in school history and looks to build on it as a senior. Doctson set TCU single-season marks for receiving yardage (1,018) and touchdown receptions (11) and his 65-catch season was one shy of the school mark set by Josh Boyce in 2012. He had three 100-yard outings last season, including a 225-yard effort against Oklahoma State that fell one yard shy of the school mark held by Jimmy Young (2008 vs. Wyoming).

--FS Derrick Kindred is now the leader of the secondary after having a breakout season as a junior. He posted a career-best 80 tackles and tied for second on the squad with four interceptions. The Horned Frogs are youthful in the back end and Kindred will be counted on to be the cool hand when pressure situations arise.

SERIES HISTORY: This is the third meeting between TCU and Minnesota and the teams split the previous two matchups. The Golden Gophers posted a 9-7 victory in 1974 and the Horned Frogs registered a 30-7 victory last season in Fort Worth.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "I think we'll be where we have to win early on offense. The defense has the potential, the longer the season goes, the better we'll keep getting." -- TCU coach Gary Patterson, on his young defense compared to the veteran offensive group.

All eyes on Georgia QB Lambert

                              Sep 01, 2015

ATHENS, GA -- Georgia coach Mark Richt took his time before naming his starting quarterback, waiting until the final day of August, before choosing Virginia-transfer Greyson Lambert to start the opener against Louisiana-Monroe. It was a surprise choice by Richt, who didn’t commit to Lambert past Game 1 and said the quarterback competition is ongoing.

At 6-5, 220 pounds, Lambert is a pocket-passer, who started nine games for Virginia last season as a sophomore, throwing 10 touchdowns and 11 interceptions. He arrived on campus in Athens in the middle of the summer and didn’t practice with the Bulldogs until the beginning of August. Yet, he did enough in just a few weeks to get the nod against a Louisiana-Monroe team projected to be in the middle of the pack in the Sun Belt Conference.

Lambert beat out Brice Ramsey, considered to be the favorite heading into August, and junior Faton Bauta. But don’t be surprised to see all three get playing time Saturday, though. Ramsey and Bauto are listed as co-second-stringers.

"Lambert is going to start the game," Richt told reporters. "There may be others that get in the game, but he's the starter. It's been a very, very close competition and it's still being contested. But at this point, we felt it was wise to name the starter and get him the reps with the No. 1 unit."

Despite a question mark at quarterback, Georgia is picked to win the SEC East and be in the College Football Playoff race. That’s how talented the Bulldogs on both sides of the ball. Lambert won’t be asked to lead victories through all-out passing attacks, not with Heisman Trophy candidate Nick Chubb at running back and a pair of projected high NFL draft picks on the offensive line in guard Greg Pyke and tackle John Theus.

The Bulldogs’ defense should be dynamic in defensive coordinator Jeremy Pruitt’s second season in Athens. Linebackers Leonard Floyd and Jordan Jenkins have next-level talent, and keep an eye on talented defensive end/outside linebacker Lorenzo Carter. The No. 1 recruit in the nation in the Class of 2014, Carter made an impact as a freshman and is poised to take the next step this year.

Georgia has a lot of the pieces to have a special season. Do the Bulldogs have the quarterback, though? That’s the biggest question in Athens.

                              PLAYERS TO WATCH

                              --RB Nick Chubb:
Last season, as a true freshman, Chubb quickly made Georgia fans feel better about first-round draft pick Todd Gurley’s injury-plagued season in Athens. Chubb rushed for 1,594 yards and 14 touchdowns as a freshman, despite splitting carries with Gurley when the current St. Louis Rams rookie was healthy. Chubb is considered a top-tier Heisman Trophy candidate.

--QB Greyson Lambert: A graduate transfer from Virginia, Lambert is a 6-5, 220-pound pocket passer, who started eight games for the Cavaliers last season, before losing his starting job. He arrived at Georgia in July and didn’t practice with the Bulldogs until early August. But in just four weeks, he was able to earn the starting nod in the opener against Louisiana-Monroe.

--LBs Leonard Floyd and Jordan Jenkins: The duo of future NFL draft picks combined for 11 sacks last season. Now, entering their second season in defensive coordinator Jeremy Pruitt’s scheme, Floyd and Jenkins are expected to anchor a vastly improved Georgia D.

SERIES HISTORY: Georgia is 2-0 against Louisiana-Monroe, with the Bulldogs winning 44-7 in their last meeting in 2005.

QUOTE TO NOTE: “Anything that happened at Virginia had nothing to do with the decision for him to start. It might have had something to do with the decision to have him come on our campus because that’s what we had on him to go by. We didn’t invite him blindly. We watched his film and felt like he could function and do the things that we’re going to ask the quarterback to do here at Georgia. But we didn’t say: ‘He’s gonna come in and be our starter’ by any means. We told him he would compete for that job and legitimately have a shot to compete for that job.” -- Georgia coach Mark Richt to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
