Ti-Cats pegged as road dogs in Edmonton

The biggest matchup on the CFL docket sees the Hamilton Tiger-Cats visiting the Edmonton Eskimos Friday night and the Westgate LV Superbook has tabbed the visitors as 2.5-point underdogs for the affair.

The Ti-Cats are tops in the Eastern Division with a 5-2 record (6-1 against the spread) while the Eskimos are in second place in the Western Division with a 5-2 record (5-2 ATS).

The Superbook opened the total at 50.

Here is a look at the rest of the matchups and the odds courtesy the Westgate LV Superbook:

    Montreal Alouettes at B.C. Lions (-3, 48.5)

Calgary Stampeders at Saskatchewan Roughriders (+6, 51.5)

Ottawa RedBlacks at Toronto Argonauts (-9, 50.5)

Finally a favorites weekend in the CFL

In a season where underdogs have dominated against the spread, we finally had a weekend where favorites came through for backers in the CFL.

With Toronto, Hamilton and Calgary all able to cover this weekend, favorites went 3-1 ATS in the four Week 8 matchups. The lone dog to cover was the Edmonton Eskimos.

Despite the solid weekend, favorites are still just 9-22-1 ATS to this point in the season.

The lines for Week 9 are currently off the board.

Game of the day: Alouettes at Lions
            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Travis Lulay has thrown four touchdowns and seven interceptions over the Lions' past three games.

Montreal Alouettes at BC Lions (-3, 48.5)

The BC Lions look to get back on track when they host the Montreal Alouettes on Thursday. The Lions have dropped three of their last four games following an embarrassing 52-22 loss to the Hamilton Tiger-Cats as they allowed the most points in a single game since a 55-9 setback to the Calgary Stampeders in 1998.

BC quarterback Travis Lulay threw two more interceptions to give him seven in his last three games, and the Lions hope he can regain his confidence as they strive to beat the Alouettes in Vancouver for the fifth straight time. Montreal looks to get back into the win column after dropping a 15-12 decision to the Edmonton Eskimos in Week 8. It was a familiar story for the Alouettes, who held a late lead in the fourth quarter before falling on a last-second field goal to lose their third consecutive game by three points. Montreal's five defeats this season have come by a combined 15 points, and it looks to turn its fortunes around by replicating a 50-17 victory over the Lions in the East Division semifinals last year.

            LINE HISTORY:
The opening lines have yet to move since hitting the board at BC -3, 48.5.

            INJURY REPORT:
            Alouettes - N/A Lions - G Cody Husbad (Ques-Undisclosed), DL Ese Mrabure-Ajufo (Ques-Undisclosed)

            ABOUT THE ALOUETTES (2-5 SU, 4-3 ATS, 1-6 O/U):
Rakeem Cato was limited to 14-of-22 passing with an interception, and failed to throw a touchdown pass for the first time since a Week 3 loss to the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. Montreal defensive end Michael Sam, who is the CFL's first openly gay player, announced his decision to take a break from football because of personal reasons. "The last 12 months have been very difficult for me to the point where I became concerned with my own mental health," Sam said on Twitter. "Because of this I am going to step away from the game at this time."

            ABOUT THE LIONS (3-4 SU, 2-4-1 ATS, 4-3 O/U):
Lulay went 13-of-20 for 139 yards and two interceptions in the loss to the Tiger-Cats and has failed to top 200 yards passing in each of his last two games while Andrew Harris, who leads the CFL in rushing, was held to 36 yards. "We didn't come to play," Harris told reporters. "It's hard to be perfect every day." BC linebacker Solomon Elimimian, who won the CFL's Most Outstanding Player award in 2014, suffered a torn Achilles tendon against Hamilton and was placed on the six-game injured list.

            TRENDS:

*Alouettes are 3-14 ATS in their last 17 meetings in BC.
*Lions are 0-5 ATS in their last 5 games in Week 9.
*Under is 5-0 in Alouettes last 5 vs. a team with a losing record.
*Over is 5-0-1 in Lions last 6 home games.

Alouettes continue to be strongest under team

Through their first seven games this season, the Montreal Alouettes are 1-6 over/under.

The Als are combining a poor offense (7th in CFL) and a stellar defense (2nd in the CFL) to be a hot under play this season. Als games have an average of 39.6 points per game scored with an average closing total of 48.5.

The Alouettes visit the BC Lions Thursday with the total currently set at 48.5.

Alouettes traditionally a poor wager in BC

Week 9 of the CFL schedule kicks off with the Montreal Alouettes out west to visit the BC Lions Thursday evening. Als backers will be well aware of their team's futility when visiting Vancouver.

The Alouettes have gone 3-14 against the spread versus the Lions in their previous 17 meetings in British Columbia.

The Lions hammered the Als by a score of 41-5 as 7-point favorites in last year's meeting in BC.

This time around, the Lions are 3-point favorites.

                      Hamilton Tiger-Cats at Edmonton Eskimos (+2, 50)

The Hamilton Tiger-Cats try to extend their winning streak to five games when they travel to Edmonton to tangle with the Eskimos on Friday. The Tiger-Cats have scored at least 31 points in each of their last four victories, including an impressive 52-22 win over the BC Lions, and have reached 52 twice this season.

Hamilton's defence has recorded six interception returns for touchdowns - one off the CFL record set by Toronto in 2006 - and has eight scores overall as it hopes to shut down Edmonton and move into sole possession of first place in the East Division. The Eskimos have a stout defence of their own as they racked up a season-high eight sacks in the 15-12 victory over the Montreal Alouettes in Week 8. Edmonton quarterback Matt Nichols has been given the green light to play Friday after a big hit sent him to the sidelines late in the third quarter to undergo concussion protocol testing. The Eskimos have won all three of their home games this season and their last seven overall at Commonwealth Stadium as they hope to pull ahead of the Calgary Stampeders in the race for first place in the West Division.

Zach Collaros was named one of the CFL Top Performers of the Week after he completed 19-of-23 passes for 290 yards and four touchdowns against the Lions. Defensive end Eric Norwood also garnered honours from the league after recording four tackles, a sack, a forced fumble and a defensive touchdown in Week 8. Hamilton wide receiver Bakari Grant, who leads the team with four touchdown receptions, missed last week's game with an undisclosed injury and is doubtful after missing practice Monday.

                      ABOUT THE ESKIMOS (5-2):
Nichols was limited to 15-of-24 passing with two interceptions before making way for James Franklin, who finished 9-of-13 for 144 yards, and led Edmonton on the game-winning field goal drive in the final minute. Adarius Bowman, who has caught 28 passes for 400 yards and three touchdowns, returned to practice after sitting out last week's game with a hip injury and is expected to suit up against the Tiger-Cats. Tiger-Cats are a hot bet away from home

Dating back to the end of the 2014 season, the Hamilton Tiger-Cats have posted a record of 8-1 against the spread in their last nine games away from home.

The Tabbies began the season with four-straight games on the road and went 3-1 ATS in that stretch. Hamilton played three games at home (3-0 ATS) before heading back out on the road for its Week 9 date with the Edmonton Eskimos.

At present, the Ti-Cats are 2.5-point road favorites for the game.

                          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Bo Levi Mitchell completed 68 percent of his passes and threw for two touchdown passes last week against the Redblacks.

Calgary Stampeders at Sakatchwan Roughriders (+6, 51)

The Calgary Stampeders look to continue their winning ways when they make the trip to Saskatchewan to face the winless Roughriders on Saturday. The Stampeders have won back-to-back games, including an impressive 48-3 victory over the Ottawa Redblacks in Week 8, to keep pace with Edmonton Eskimos for the West Division lead.

Calgary has dominated the series with Saskatchewan in the last five years winning 10 of the last 12 meetings, including the last four overall, and hopes to heap more misery on the Roughriders. Everything that could possibly go wrong has went wrong for Saskatchewan as it comes off a bye week looking to halt a seven-game slide. The Roughriders are on their third starting quarterback after Darian Durant and Kevin Glenn went down with injuries, leaving rookie pivot Brett Smith to run for his life as he's been sacked 12 times in the past two games. Saskatchewan has dropped 12 of its last 13 regular-season games and hopes to stop the bleeding by beating the Stampeders for the first time since July 5, 2013.

Stampeders - OL Dan Federkeil (Ques-Leg) Roughriders - LB Shea Emry (Ques-Neck)

                          ABOUT THE STAMPEDERS (5-2 SU, 1-6 ATS, 2-5 O/U):
Bo Levi Mitchell was named one of the CFL Top Performers of the Week after finishing 17-of-25 for 243 yards and two touchdowns to go along with two scores on the ground against the Redblacks. Calgary released disgruntled linebacker Jasper Simmons on Tuesday after his agent lashed out on social media by tweeting that the "worst organization in CFL is holding him hostage." The owners of the Stampeders and Calgary Flames have unveiled their $900 million proposal to build a sports complex, including a new indoor stadium that would hold 30,000 people for football, on the edge of the downtown core.

                          ABOUT THE ROUGHRIDERS (0-7 SU, 1-5-1 ATS, 4-3 O/U):
Smith finished a respectable 23-of-35 for 298 yards and two touchdowns in the 30-26 loss to the Toronto Argos in Week 7. "I feel a lot more comfortable and I hope the guys feel more comfortable with me back there," Smith told reporters. "I think we'll continue to roll and get some momentum and go into this week as comfortable as they have ever felt." Saskatchewan added special teams ace Scott McHenry to the active roster and signed linebacker Don Unamba on Tuesday after releasing defensive backs Michael Carter and Geoff Tisdale earlier in the week.

Game of the day: Redblacks at Argonauts
                              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Tory Gurley is second in the CFL with five receiving touchdowns.

Ottawa Redblacks at Toronto Argonauts (-9, 50.5)

The Toronto Argonauts won back-to-back games to pull into a tie with Hamilton for first place in the East Division heading into Week 9. The Ottawa Redblacks, who visit the Argonauts on Sunday, sit a game back in third place and will be looking to shake off a terrible performance after getting crushed at Calgary last week.

The Redblacks edged Calgary 29-26 at home on July 24 to kick off a modest two-game winning streak but failed to get anything done on offence last Saturday as the Stampeders rolled to a 48-3 victory. Ottawa will need to fix some holes on defence as well as it gets set for Toronto, which is second in the CFL in points scored despite handing the reins over to Trevor Harris at quarterback with veteran Ricky Ray injured all season. The Argonauts are coming off a 27-20 road victory over Winnipeg in which Harris threw a pair of touchdown passes to bring his season total to 16. The Redblacks shuffled through three quarterbacks at Calgary last week, and Danny O’Brien showed some promise with a 9-of-10 passing effort after the game was already out of hand.

The Argos opened as 8.5-point favorites before shifting to -9. The opening total of 50.5 has not moved from that point.

                              INJURY REPORT:
Redblacks - WR Chris Williams (Ques-Undisclosed) Argonauts - LB Cory Green wood (Ques-Concussion)

                              ABOUT THE REDBLACKS (4-3 SU, 4-3 ATS, 4-3 O/U):
Henry Burris does not appear to be in danger of losing his starting job to O’Brien or anyone else, but the veteran quarterback could use a quick bounce-back after going 7-of-17 for 114 yards before being pulled in Calgary. Burris is fourth in the CFL with 1,809 passing yards heading into Week 9 and totaled 712 yards and five TDs in the Redblacks previous two games. The loss last week began a stretch of four of five on the road for Ottawa, which is 1-2 in front of opposing fans.

                              ABOUT THE ARGONAUTS (5-2 SU, 5-2 ATS, 3-4 O/U):
Ray underwent offseason shoulder surgery that necessitated he begin the season on the six-game injured list, and the veteran has been returned to the list. “He still needs a few more weeks, minimum," coach Scott Milanovich told reporters. "I know he had a good throw the other day and felt good about that but he's not there yet." Ray is a free agent at the end of the season and Harris looks poised to step up into Toronto’s No. 1 spot for the long term while leading the CFL in TD passes and sitting second in yards (1,987).

                              TRENDS:

*RedBlacks are 3-9 ATS in their last 12 road games.
*Argonauts are 6-2 ATS in their last 8 games overall.
*Under is 9-4 in RedBlacks last 13 games following a S.U. loss.
*Under is 5-0 in Argonauts last 5 vs. East.

                              CONSENSUS:
52 percent of the users are backing the Argos with 54 percent on the under.
