Why you must pay attention to CFL action

If you don't follow the CFL closely, you probably won't have much an idea of what is going on, but if you do, there is definitely some money to be made for the average sports bettor.

For example, underdogs went an incredible 4-0 against the spread and 3-1 straight up in Week 1 of CFL action. Ottawa, Winnipeg and Toronto all won SU and ATS. The lone favorite to win was Calgary and they did so by just one point, 24-23 over Hamilton.

Saskatchewan losses QB for remainder of season

The Saskatchewan Roughriders starting quarterback Darian Durant suffered a ruptured left Achilles in Saturday's 30-26 loss to Winnipeg and will miss the remainder of the CFL season.

Durant, who led the Roughriders to the CFL's Grey Cup title back in 2013, will be replaced by veteran backup Kevin Glenn.

Saskatchewan hosts the Toronto Argonauts next Sunday.

Another CFL QB to miss extended action with injury

Edmonton Eskimos starting quarterback Mike Reilly will miss the next 10-12 weeks due to a knee injury suffered in Week 1.

Reilly was injured in the fourth quarter of Edmonton's 26-11 loss to the Toronto Argonauts, after being hit low by an Argos' defensive lineman.

The Eskimos have a bye week in Week 2 before hosting the Ottawa RedBlacks in Week 3.

Game of the day: Tiger-Cats at Blue Bombers
        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hamilton Tiger-Cats at Winnipeg Blue Bombers (+1.5, 51)

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers look to build off an impressive season-opening victory when they host the Hamilton Tiger-Cats on Thursday. The Blue Bombers exorcised some past demons at Mosaic Stadium by beating the Saskatchewan Roughriders 30-26 for their first win in Regina since 2004.

Winnipeg sets its sights on ending another skid after dropping three straight games to Hamilton at Investors Group Field and hopes to improve to 2-0 for the second straight year. The Tiger-Cats were left to lick their wounds after a 24-23 setback to the Calgary Stampeders in Week 1. Hamilton led for most of the rematch of the 2014 Grey Cup final before losing on a last-second field goal and looks to bounce back by beating the Blue Bombers for the fourth straight time in Winnipeg. The Tiger-Cats have outscored the Blue Bombers 90-36 in the last three matchups in Winnipeg and hope to continue their recent dominance over the Blue and Gold and avoid an 0-2 start for the sixth consecutive year.

        TV:
        8:30 p.m. ET, TSN, ESPN2

        LINE HISTORY:
The initial line opened with the Bombers at +2 before being bet down to +1.5. The total opened at 50.5 and has shifted to 51.

        INJURY REPORT:

        ABOUT THE TIGER-CATS (0-1 SU, 1-0 ATS, 0-1 O/U):
Zach Collaros completed his first 10 passes before finishing 27-of-38 for 281 yards, but threw a costly interception that was returned for a touchdown. "Obviously the interception sticks out," Collaros told reporters. "Then you think about what else you could have done to help others during the week with their preparation." Johnny Sears Jr. recorded two interceptions, including one returned for a touchdown, in his Hamilton debut after coming over from Winnipeg in the offseason and Brandon Banks returned a punt for a touchdown.

ABOUT THE BLUE BOMBERS (1-0 SU, 1-0 ATS, 1-0 O/U):
Drew Willy turned in a near-flawless performance as he went 22-of-25 for 325 yards and three touchdowns against the Roughriders. "We have to do it every single week," Willy told reporters. "We have a short week and we need to be ready to go against a good Hamilton team." Paris Cotton rushed for 108 yards to go along with 59 receiving yards and a score while Cameron Marshall added two touchdowns - one rushing and one receiving.

        TRENDS:

*Tiger-Cats are 5-0 ATS in their last 5 road games.
*Blue Bombers are 6-13-1 ATS in their last 20 games following a S.U. win.
*Under is 6-1 in Tiger-Cats last 7 vs. a team with a winning record.
*Over is 6-2 in Blue Bombers last 8 games in Week 2.

52.8 percent of users are backing Hamilton with 53.6 percent on the under.

Game of the day: Stampeders at Alouettes
            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Calgary Stampeders at Montreal Alouettes (+10 47.5)

The Calgary Stampeders hope to continue defense of their CFL title with another victory when they hit the road to face the Montreal Alouettes on Friday. The Stampeders opened up the season with a thrilling 24-23 victory over the Hamilton Tiger-Cats as Rene Paredes kicked a 50-yard field goal as time expired.

Calgary boasted a league-best 8-1 record on the road last season, with its only loss coming to the Alouettes, as it vies to become the first team since Montreal in 2010 to successfully defend its CFL crown. The Alouettes look to rebound from a disappointing 20-16 home loss to the Ottawa Redblacks in Week 1. To make matters worse for Montreal, starting quarterback Jonathan Crompton and backup Dan LeFevour each sustained shoulder injuries and are out for the foreseeable future. Canadian rookie quarterback Brandon Bridge, who threw for 62 yards and an interception in his CFL debut, will likely make his first career start as the Alouettes hope to avoid going 0-2 for the first time since 2007.

            TV:
            7:30 p.m. ET, TSN, RDS, ESPN2

            LINE HISTORY:
Lines opened at Montreal +10.5 with a total of 47.5. The spread has since dropped to +10.

            INJURY REPORT:
Stampeders - DL Brandon Boudreaux (Ques-Knee), DL Corey Mace (Ques-Back), LB Karl McCartney (Ques-Knee) Alouettes - QB Jonathan Crompton (Ques-Shoulder), DL Michael Sam (Ques-Suspension), DB Chris Ackie (Ques-Hamstring)

            ABOUT THE ALOUETTES (0-1 SU, 0-1 ATS, 0-1 O/U):
Defensive end Michael Sam returned to the team after leaving training camp June 12 due to personal issues, but won't likely be ready for game action for another three weeks. "I was always coming back," Sam told reporters "I had to deal with personal matters when I was home so that's all taken care of." Crompton was placed on the six-game injured list with a bruised shoulder and LeFevour will likely miss the rest of the season with a dislocated shoulder, leaving Bridge to battle it out with fellow rookie Rakeem Cato for the starting job.

            ABOUT THE STAMPEDERS (1-0 SU, 1-0 ATS, 0-1 O/U):
Bo Levi Mitchell overcame three interceptions to finish with 263 passing yards and a touchdown and his main target Jeff Fuller ended up with nine catches for 148 yards. "Bo just put the ball up there and I did my best to come down with it," Fuller told reporters. "One on one, I'll take myself over a lot of DBs and them not being able to touch me gives me more of an advantage." Keon Raymond returned an interception 98 yards for a touchdown to become Calgary's all-time leader in defensive scores with seven.

            TRENDS:

*Stampeders are 7-1 ATS in their last 8 meetings.
*Alouettes are 5-0 ATS in their last 5 games following a ATS loss.
*Under is 8-3 in Stampeders last 11 games following a ATS loss.
*Under is 18-7 in Alouettes last 25 games overall.

Game of the day: Lions at RedBlacks
              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

              B.C. Lions at Ottawa RedBlacks (+3, 46.5)

The Ottawa Redblacks look to win consecutive games for the first time in franchise history when they host the BC Lions on Saturday. The Redblacks opened the season with an impressive 20-16 road victory over the Alouettes and hope to use that momentum to beat the Lions for the first time after dropping both meetings last year.

"It's a new game, a new week and we have to be at our best on Saturday," Ottawa coach Rick Campbell told reporters. "This is a big challenge for us and we need to focus 100 percent." BC is eager to get back on the field for its season opener and erase the memories of last year's East semifinal after giving up 50 points in the loss to the Alouettes. New head coach Jeff Tedford has been tasked with leading the Lions back among the CFL elite after seeing their record get progressively worse in the last two years. Quarterback Travis Lulay is ready to go after missing most of the 2014 campaign with a shoulder injury and should benefit from the guidance of noted QB guru Tedford to give the offence, which finished fifth in the CFL with 330 yards per game, a much-needed boost.

              TV:
              6 p.m. ET, TSN, ESPN2

              LINE HISTORY:
Oddsmakers opened the RedBlacks +3. The total opened at 46 and is up a half-point.

              INJURY REPORT:
Lions - DB Steven Clarke (Out, undisclosed), G Cody Husband (Out, undisclosed), C Matthew Norman (Out, undisclosed). RedBlacks - QB Brock Jensen (Questionable, undisclosed), WR Khalil Paden (Questionable, undisclosed), WR Marcus Henry (Questionable, undisclosed), DB Hugo Lopez (Questionable, undisclosed), DB Forrest Hightower( Qustionable, undisclosed), DL Andrew Marshall (Questionable, undisclosed).

              ABOUT THE LIONS (2014: 9-9 SU 8-9-1 ATS, 5-12-1 O/U):
Running back Andrew Harris, who led the team in rushing before suffering a season-ending ankle injury in late September, is healthy and eager to play his part in the new high-powered offence. "You can already get excited about the things we're going to do," Harris told reporters. "I can't wait to see how it's going to play out in game situations." BC signed former Indianapolis Colts wide receiver Austin Collie and hopes he can fill the void left by big-play slotback Ernest Jackson, who bolted for Ottawa in the offseason.

              ABOUT THE REDBLACKS (1-0 SU, 1-0 ATS, 0-1 O/U):
Henry Burris shook off three interceptions in the first half to finish 23-of-36 for 263 yards and a touchdown against the Alouettes. Jackson led all wide receivers with seven catches for 74 yards, including the go-ahead touchdown in the fourth quarter of his Ottawa debut. Starting safety Jermaine Robinson injured his wrist in Week 1 and will be out for at least a week and will be replaced by Jacques Washington, while middle linebacker Travis Brown is listed as day-to-day after getting injured in Montreal.

              TRENDS:

              * Lions are 1-6 ATS in their last seven games in Week 2.
              * RedBlacks are 0-4 ATS in their last four Saturday games.
              * Under is 4-1-1 in RedBlacks last six games overall.

              CONSENSUS:
Fifty-seven percent of bettors are backing the visiting Lions.

Toronto Argonauts at Saskatchewan Roughriders (-3.5, 51)

The Toronto Argonauts look to build off their excellent start when they travel to Regina to face the Saskatchewan Roughriders on Sunday. The Argonauts opened the season with a spirited 26-11 win over the Edmonton Eskimos in Fort McMurray, Alberta and have the chance to go 2-0 for the first time since 1997.

Toronto dropped seven of its nine road games last season, but have beaten the Roughriders in two of the last three games at Mosaic Stadium. Saskatchewan is left to pick up the pieces after starting quarterback Darian Durant suffered a season-ending Achilles tendon injury in the 30-26 setback to the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. Veteran signal-caller Kevin Glenn will take over the starting duties as the Roughriders hope to recover from their double-blow and avoid going 0-2 for the first time in four years. "Kevin has had success everywhere he's been," Saskatchewan head coach Corey Chamblin told reporters. "So I fully expect him to continue doing the same thing here."

We hope you are not missing out on this CFL trend

Following Saturday night's 27-16 win by the Ottawa RedBlacks over the B.C. Lions, underdogs are still a perfect 6-0 against the spread.

Both the RedBlacks and the Montreal Alouettes easily covered as home dogs in Week 2, with the RedBlacks entering Saturyda's game as 3-point home dogs, while the Ales topped the Calgary Stampeders 29-11 as 9.5-point home dogs.

The Toronto Argonauts will try to keep the streak going for the dogs, currently pegged at +3.5 for their game Sunday at the Saskatchewan Roughriders.

The CFL trend you'll have to see to believe

It really is the dog days of summer. Or at least it is up north in the Canadian Football League.

We are two weeks into the CFL season and underdogs are a perfect 7-0 against the spread and maybe even more impressive, they are 6-1 straight up.

Not only are dogs covering, they are doing so with ease, covering the spread by an average of 13.71 points per game.

The only favorite to win straight up was the Calgary Stampeders back in Week 1, when they topped the Hamilton Tiger-Cats 24-23 as 6-point favorites.

With the dogs dominating and more quarterback injuries (Winnipeg starter Drew Willy suffered a concussion this week), it's no surprise the lines for Week 3 are currently off the board.

RedBlacks try to remain perfect as 5-point dogs

Oddsmakers opened the Ottawa RedBlacks as 5-point road dogs in their Week 3 clash at the Edmonton Eskimos earlier Monday.

The second-year franchise has already matched its win total for last year at two, winning straight up and cashing as 8-point dogs at the Montreal Alouettes (20-16) in Week 1 and as 3-point home pups versus the BC Lions (27-16) last week.

CFL underdogs and Unders have oddsmakers on their toes in Week 3

The CFL was a one-sided league in 2014, with the West dominating the East. That may not be the case in 2015, and early underdog bettors are making plenty of bacon – Canadian bacon that is – two weeks in.

Entering Week 3 of the schedule, CFL underdogs are an unblemished 7-0 ATS (8-0 ATS if you got Hamilton as a dog instead of pick'em versus Winnipeg in Week 2) with six of those paydays coming from East Division teams covering the spread against squads from the West Division. In fact, the East holds a 5-1 SU edge over the West after going 12-28 SU in non-divisional clashes last season.

“Bettors generally like to back favorites and when you combine that with the West's dominance from last season, it is no wonder that these early results have been unexpected,” renowned CFL oddsmaker Randall “The Handle” tells Covers.

Week 2 featured four non-divisional matchups and all four went to teams from the East. Hamilton knocked off Winnipeg 52-26 after closing as big as a 1.5-point underdog at most books, Montreal dropped defending Grey Cup champ Calgary 29-11 as a 9.5-point home dog, Ottawa stunned B.C. 27-13 as a 3-point home pup, and Toronto capped the week with a 42-40 OT win in Saskatchewan as a field-goal underdog.

The Week 3 slate has three of its four games between non-divisional opponents, with Ottawa at Edmonton, Montreal at Winnipeg, and Toronto at Calgary. Randall says this week’s CFL spreads will not be shaded toward this trend but he does say he’ll be closely monitoring the betting patterns for Week 3 action.

“It truly is a small sample although we cannot ignore some of the things we are seeing,” he says. “We will gauge both the teams competing and the marketplace but it remains business as usual. As a linemaker, my objective is always to draw good two-way action and week to week action is a component.”

“Faves will start covering some games at some point but no one knows when that may start,” he adds. “We'll see if action dwindles at all this week or if bettors feel that this is the week where things start to balance out. Lines have been sent out. We'll see how it goes.”

Another trend, which has carried over from last season, is the rate Unders have cashed in for total bettors. So far, through two weeks, CFL games have finished 3-5 Over/Under – on the heels of the 2014 season in which CFL games went 34-51 O/U on the year for a 60 percent winning rate for Under players.

Entering 2015, the CFL changed rules regarding pass interference and punt returns, hoping to jumpstart scoring following a 2014 campaign that saw team’s average scoring drop from 26.21 points per game in 2013 to just 22.74 points. So far in 2015, CFL teams are averaging 26.18 points per game but that increase in production hasn’t paid out for the Over.

“Scoring was down a year ago and not too much has changed, despite the rule changes. That said, the new rules are creating more opportunities for scoring but teams have not taken full advantage quite yet,” Randall says. “A slew of quarterback injuries could be a contributing factor. Again, we'll monitor and respond accordingly.”

As of the third week of the CFL calendar, more than half of the league’s teams are missing their designated No. 1 quarterback with Toronto, Montreal, Edmonton, Saskatchewan, and now Winnipeg - QB Drew Willy questionable for Friday’s home stand against the Alouettes – looking down the depth chart at pivot.

Books have started releasing Week 3 odds with the Eskimos opening as 5-point home faves against Ottawa, Montreal opening +3.5 at Winnipeg, BC opening as a 3.5-point home fave against Saskatchewan and the Argos +6.5 at the Stampeders.

Bombers QB Drew Willy cleared to play in Week 3

Winnipeg Blue Bombers quarterback Drew Willy has gotten the green light to play in Week 3 after a helmet-to-helmet collision against the Hamilton Tiger-Cats in Week 2.

Willy returned to practice Monday and was leading the Bombers' offense, prepping for their clash against the Montreal Alouettes.

The Bombers are being offered as 3.5-point home favorites for the matchup and according to renowned CFL oddsmaker Randall the Handle, Willy is worth at least three points to Winnipeg spreads.
