            CONFIDENTIAL TIP-OFF BASKETBALL RELEASES FOR
THE WEEK OF JANUARY 16-22, 2004

            Wednesday, January 21

*AUBURN over Arkansas...SEC scouts see no reason not to ride
rolling Auburn (covered 7 of last 9 thru Jan. 13), especially at
home, where Tigers last 8 wins have been by 22 ppg. Auburn has
            balance (6 players between 8 and 15 ppg), a patient offense (49%
FGs & conf.-best 37% treys), and a quick, swarming defense (nearly
11 spg!). And rugged Tigers (SEC-best +10 rpg!) will raise some
welts on smallish, unphysical Arkansas in the paint. With 6 of his
top 7 players frosh & sophs, Fayetteville sources say 2nd-year Hog
HC Stan Heath still a recruiting class or two away from being
competitive on treacherous SEC trail. Lay it.
            *AUBURN 81 - Arkansas 52 RATING - 11

            Thursday, January 22

SANTA CLARA over *St. Mary's...There are some well-defined recent
series trends between these longtime, nearby rivals. Though St.
Mary's has knocked Santa Clara out of WCC Tourney past two years,
Broncos have won and covered last 8 regular-season meetings,
including 4 straight at McKeon Pavilion. Regional observers believe
matchups not too bad for Dick Davey's crew, whose usual legion of
            6-7 & 6-8 bangers can frustrate Gaels' finesse-preferring frontline
imports Kickert & Adjiwanou. And Alaska natives jr. Bailey
(medical RS LY) & explosive juco Perkins providing Santa Clara with
uncommon (for SCU) athleticism in backcourt.
            SANTA CLARA 66 - *St. Mary's 60 RATING - 11

BOISE STATE over *San Jose State...WAC insiders believe it's
prudent to buck talent-thin San Jose, and with good reason.
Spartans patient, clock-milking tactics have been backfiring during
current 5-game losing streak, and team chemistry fragile with
several players seen screaming at each other during recent setback
vs. Hawaii. Don't expect SJS to effectively slow pace vs. deep,
uptempo Boise State squad loaded with confident shooters. So,
Broncos, who've executed with poise and smarts on road so far (only
a hoop away from 6-1 SU mark away), figure to cover small impost
vs. sliding Spartans, who've dropped 9 straight spread decisions in
WAC play (thru Jan. 14). BOISE STATE 76 - *San Jose State 62 RATING - 10
