Buffalo hasn't played in nine days; they're 5-2 despite playing only one home game (Nov 14); they led at Kentucky at half, are 5-0 vs teams not in top 100, with three wins by 12+ points. Bulls are forcing turnovers on 21.4% of possessions. Drexel is 2-6 despite playing only one true road game (48-65 at Colorado); Dragons turn ball over 21.3% of time.

Charleston beat Charlotte 83-82 at home LY despite being down 14 with 6:01 left; Cougars were 12-28 from arc, 49ers just 23-37 on line. This is home opener for Charlotte team that lost four of last five games; they're shooting 58.5% from line- two of their four wins were in OT. Charleston has new coach, is 0-3 vs top 100 teams, losing by 8-9-29 points.

Middle Tennessee won its last two games by a point each; they're 0-2 vs top 100 teams, losing by 18-10 points. Blue Raiders are shooting 39.9% inside arc- this is rare shot on national TV for them. Oklahoma State won by 18 at Memphis last game; they're 8-1, forcing turnovers 23.3% of the time (#40)- they have bigger game for them up next, against Maryland.

Arizona State is 6-3, losing only true road game 72-71 at Texas A&M in game they led by 11 at half; Sun Devils also lost couple games on neutral floor by five points each. ASU hit 10-22 from arc in 79-77 home win vs Marquette LY. Eagles are down to eight scholarship players; they have not played in 10 days, split first four home tilts, losing to #220 Omaha.

Oakland lost by 26 at Michigan State Sunday night; they're 3-6 vs #74 schedule, with #325 eFG%, not good- they lost their other two top 100 games by 11-5 points. Arizona is 10-0, with five wins by 18+ points vs teams outside top 150. Wildcats hammered Michigan by 27 Saturday; they shoot 56% inside arc, force turnovers 21.2% of the time.

North Carolina lost by 14 at Kentucky Saturday in first true road game; Tar Heels are 3-0 vs teams outside top 100, winning by 16-44-44 points. UNC beat NC-Greensboro 81-50 LY- it was 44-14 at the half. Spartans won last three games by total of seven points after losing six in row prior to that. UNCG lost only true road game 87-79 at Indiana.

VCU handed Northern Iowa its first loss in OT Saturday; Rams won at Belmont 81-68 LY, forcing 21 turnovers in game they trailed by 12 early on. Rams are 6-3 vs #14 schedule; #108 Bruins are 2nd-worst team VCU has played this season. Belmont lost last two games by 3-8 points after 7-1 start; Bruins turn ball over 20.3% of time, a red flag vs VCU.

Dartmouth is 3-5 vs #334 schedule; they're 1-4 on road, with only win at #298 Mass-Lowell; Big Green turns ball over 21.4% of time. Mercer won its two D-I home games y 8-9 points; they lost two of three games up in Alaska, with two of those going OT. Bears give up 39.7% of their points behind arc. Dartmouth is shooting 38% as a team behind the arc.

East Tennessee State just split first two SoCon home games; they're 2-1 on road, losing by 14 at Valparaiso; Bucs are 2-1 vs top 200 teams- their 55.1 eFG% is #319 in nation. Eastern Kentucky is 3-1 vs teams outside top 100, winning by 23-9-9 points, losing by 6 to Valpo. EKU forces a turnover 28.7% of time, gets 48.9% of its points behind arc (#3).

North Dakota State is 4-4 vs D-I teams, 3-0 at home, winning by 13-8-29 points; Bison have #305 3FG%, are shooting just 43.3% inside the arc. Akron is 6-3 vs #301 schedule, losing last game Saturday at home by a point to Middle Tennessee. Zips lost only true road game 78-72 at Penn State three weeks ago. Akron has couple of guys hurt right now.

Vanderbilt upset Purdue at home last game; Commodores are in bottom 5 in country in experience, are making 42.6% of 3's (#9), #13 in eFG%, so they're young but good. Vandy is 3-0 vs teams outside top 200, winning by 10-32-10 points. Western Carolina lost last three games by 6-7-20 points- they've already lost games with SEC teams by 10-6 points.

St Mary's had great OT win at Creighton Saturday; Gaels have another road trip coming up to NYC this weekend, could overlook NAU squad that is 0-4 on road, with three losses by 12+ points, also losing by 6 at Ole Miss. Lumberjacks' last four games were all decided by four points or less, or in OT- they just beat LMU of the WCC by a hoop Saturday.

James Madison forced 19 turnovers (+4), beat Ball State 73-68 at home LY; young Dukes are 6-3 despite turning ball over 23.5% of time- they're 4-1 vs teams outside top 200, with three wins by 7 or less points. Ball State is bottom 15 team in terms of experience; they're 2-4 vs schedule #302; four of their last five games were decided by 7 or less points.

NC State won 65-58 at Tennessee LY after leading by 17 at half; not lot of those Vols are still in Knosville- this is Tennessee's first true road tilts after going 1-3 in neutral court games, losing by 16-15-8 points. State got upset at home by Wofford Sunday; they're 2-2 vs top 100 teams, with its best win over #70 Boise State. Wolfpack has #10 eFG% in country.

Central Florida is 4-4 vs #339 schedule, losing last three games by 23-11-13 points; two of three teams that beat them are outside top 200. Baylor is 8-1 with five top 100 wins, with only loss 62-54 to Illinois on a neutral floor; Bears are stronger than usual on perimeter, with #18 eFG% in country (41.5%)- teams shoot just 24.5% from arc against Bears. New Mexico State is 4-6; three of its last four losses are by 3 or less points. Aggies are 0-6 in true road games- they turn ball over 21.3% of time.

Armadillo: Thursday's List of 13: Our Bottom 5, top 8 in the NFL

32) Redskins—Jay Gruden was an Arena League head coach for a long time but the media involvement aspect of being an NFL head coach seems to be hampering his program. Memo to coach Gruden: This isn’t the AFL; millions of people read what you say. Try not to bash your QB every single day.

31) Bears—Jay Cutler has the worst body language of any QB I’ve ever seen; he is this generation’s Jeff George. Problem #2 is, he makes $100M+ and everyone knows it’s a bum contract. Problem #1 is the offensive coordinator said so publicly. Now he is sitting behind Jimmy Clausen this week. Jimmy freakin' Clausen.

30) Raiders—Would they really move to San Antonio? In the early 90’s, there used to be a World League team called the San Antonio Riders; I think Nebraska coach Mike Riley coached that team. It would be bizarre if the Raiders moved to Texas.

29) Jaguars—Tom Coughlin will get in the Hall of Fame someday; his best work was getting the Jags into the playoffs in their second year of existence. Seems like a long time ago now, for both parties.

28) Titans—Doing a good job of playing the Washington Generals-type role and losing every game down the stretch so they get the #1 pick in the draft, which is the best way for them to get better, long-term.

8) Cardinals— Ten weeks ago, Ryan Lindley wasn’t in the NFL; now he’s starting QB for the NFC’s #1 seed. No pressure there.

7) Steelers—Win two more home games and they win the AFC North; problem is, they’ve lost to the sub-.500 Bucs/Saints at home.

6) Cowboys—They should let Murray sit this week, to rest his hand and to lessen his workload, seeing as he is on pace for 401 carries this season. Tony Romo has been a warrior this year, for sure.

5) Colts—Offense gave up three TDs in last two games; am little concerned about them going forward. Interesting game with Dallas this week.

4) Broncos—I get the feeling this could be it for Peyton Manning; not really sure why, but could see him bowing out and eventually becoming part of an ownership group of an NFL team.

3) Seahawks—Playing really good defense, but unless they beat Arizona this week, they’ll have to go on road the first week of the playoffs, which is always dicey.

2) Packers—They’re #1 on this list when playing at home, much lower when on road, not in top 10 on artificial turf. Seattle’s field has artificial turf; they don’t want to go there in January.

1) Patriots—Did you see the Alex Sandler movie where Rex Ryan plays a guy who is a huge Patriot fan, with a Belichick bobblehead on his desk and a Brady poster on the wall? If you didn’t know who Ryan was, you’d never know he wasn’t an actor. He could be very, very good on TV, if he chooses that route.

Lookahead spot

The Toronto Raptors aren’t home for the holidays this season, kicking off a six-game road trip that extends into the New Year in Chicago Monday. The Raptors play the Bulls, then have some time off for Christmas before picking back up in L.A. on December 27. But before Toronto escapes the cold Canadian winter for stops in Los Angeles, Denver, Portland, Golden State and Phoenix, it hosts the New York Knicks at the Air Canada Centre this Sunday.

It’s a tough spot for the Dinos, who not only look ahead to Monday’s date in the Windy City, but will undoubtedly have plenty of players trying to organize their holiday plays before this home game. Toronto plays in Detroit Friday then has a day off before Sunday’s contest against the Knicks – not a lot of time to fit in family and basketball.

Letdown spot

You’ve done it. You’ve made the grade and been rewarded with a nice year-end bonus and a bowl game. The UTEP Miners are enjoying this warm fuzzy feeling for the first time since 2010, snapping a five-year bowl drought with a spot in the New Mexico Bowl against Utah State on Dec. 20 – the opening weekend of college football’s bowl season.

The Miners are 10-point underdogs – one of three double-digit bowl dogs – and for good reason. Texas El Paso, which scrapes in bowl season on a 7-5 SU record (9-3 ATS), is 1-5 SU away from home and went 3-3 ATS on the road, compared to a perfect 6-0 ATS mark at home. The Miners punched their ticket to the postseason with a thrilling 3-point victory over Middle Tennessee in the season finale and may be just happy to finally be bowling come Saturday.

Schedule spot

The St. Mary’s Gaels are putting some miles on their frequent flyer card this month. The Gaels just returned from Omaha, Nebraska with an OT win over Creighton and host Northern Arizona in Moraga Tuesday before jumping on other plane, crossing the country for a showdown with the St. John’s Red Storm in New York City Friday.

St. Mary’s is scheduled to play the Johnnies at Carnesecca Arena for a 7 p.m. ET start – 4 p.m. back home in California. The Gaels have played outside of the Golden State just once this season – at Creighton – and only went as far East as Minnesota last season, losing to the Golden Gophers in the NIT. It's been a very long time since St. Mary's made a trip this far away from home. The Red Storm are one of the hottest teams in college hoops and will have a heavy home-court edge Friday.

Some NFL trends to ponder, with Week 16 upon us........

-- Patriots covered once in last eight games as a double digit favorite.

-- Bucs covered eight of last 29 non-divisional home games.

-- Oakland is 3-7 in last ten games as a home underdog.

-- Chiefs covered 12 of last 17 non-divisional games.

-- Cowboys are 7-24 as home favorites in Garrett era.

-- Chicago is 2-10 in last dozen games as a divisional underdog.

13) Russell Wilson still only makes $667,000 from the Seahawks; haven’t heard much about this, but they have to have tried to sign him up to a long-term contract, right? He’s going to break the bank when his contract is up, one way or the other. Hard to believe they’d let him walk.

12) Too bad about Bucks’ rookie Jabari Parker, who messed up his leg and is done for the year. Milwaukee is a fun team to watch with a good core of young players; this injury really hurts.

11) Bears benched Jay Cutler for Jimmy Clausen? Really? Wonder what Packers think about that, since they’re tied for first place with Detroit, could use a Bears win. Inserting a new QB on a short work week usually doesn’t wind up going very well.

10) Guy on ESPN the other night made a good point about how since the NCAA went with a softer, composite basketball, rather than a leather ball, now and then you see shots take odd bounces off the rim, especially the back rim and go in.

9) Michigan offered Jim Harbaugh six years, $49M; they play 12 games a year, plus a bowl game. That’s a lot of cabbage to coach 13 games, but that must be how much money the Wolverines’ program generates when they’ve got it rolling. Been a while since they had it rolling.

8) Islanders are 9-0 in overtime/shootouts this year, first team ever to win their first nine such games in a season; Blackhawks are 5-1, Edmonton is sadly 0-6, which helped cost their coach his job.

7) Going to see Mark Wahlberg’s new movie The Gambler next week; I’m assuming this is a remake of James Caan’s 1974 movie, which was very good. One advantage of being retired from my day job will be matinee movies. Popcorn tastes better in the afternoon, although it is still ridiculously expensive.

6) Angels still owe Josh Hamilton $83M over the next three years; ha!!!! Hamilton knocked in 128 runs in 2012, then knocked in a total of 123 the last two seasons, while missing 84 (25.9%) out of 324 Halo games.

5) Of the 26 basketball teams in the AAC and ACC, only seven of them are in the top 200 in strength of schedule; they schedule stiffs in December because they know their conference schedule will be enough to raise their power ratings to acceptable levels. AAC is in danger of having one team in the NCAAs this season.

4) Bo Pelini is an adult; therefore, he has to know that in this day and age, there is no such thing as a truly “private” meeting. What he said on his way out the door in Nebraska will hurt his chances of getting another D-I head coaching job and it could hurt him wherever he recruits.

3) There is a new movie out called Wedding Ringer; the father-in-law in the movie is Ken Howard, who played Coach Reeves in The White Shadow, one of the all-time great TV shows. Haven’t seen him on TV much lately, but he is an excellent actor who nailed the part of a former NBA player who became a high school basketball coach in LA in the early 80’s.

2) Listening to Hubie Brown on NBA telecasts is like taking an online course in basketball coaching; highly educational, he is still sharp as a tack and a pleasure to listen to. Learn a lot every game.

1) When your football team is going to have its fifth coach in six years next season, the man who hired all those coaches comes under scrutiny, which is why Pitt fired AD Steve Pederson this week, after Paul Chryst bolted for Wisconsin (his alma mater).

Pitt expects better than 6-6 from its once-storied football program, they’re going to have to hire the new AD before they hire a new coach which is going to cripple this year’s recruiting, unless they move very quickly.

How odd is life? Pederson basically got fired because Gary Andersen surprisingly bolted Wisconsin for Oregon State. Chryst wouldn’t have left Pitt for any other job.
