NCAAF opening line report: Alabama opens as 6-point road faves vs. LSU

Alabama Crimson Tide at LSU Tigers (+6)

Alabama, where Nick Saban coaches, hopes to keep its college football playoff hopes right on track. Louisiana State, where Saban once coached, would love to send the Crimson Tide right off the rails.

That matchup is the biggest of Week 11, as teams gear up for the final mad dash to the end of college football’s regular season.

The Crimson Tide sit at 7-1 SU and are coming off a bye after dropping Tennessee 34-20, but they fell short as a massive 20-point road favorite. In fact, ‘Bama is just 2-6 ATS, tied with a host of other teams for the third-worst spread-covering record in the nation.

Meanwhile, LSU is 7-2 SU and ATS and also coming off a bye after knocking off previously unbeaten Mississippi 10-7 as a 4-point home underdog. The Tigers have won and cashed three in a row since getting trounced 41-7 at Auburn as a 7-point pup.

“The bye came at a really good time for the Tigers, emotionally and physically. They’ve got renewed confidence after beating Ole Miss, which was a sloppy win,” said John Lester, senior lines manager for bookmaker.eu. “We’ll keep an eye on (Alabama running back) T.J. Yeldon’s status (foot injury) as the week progresses and we expect he’ll be fine, but there’s rarely a shortage of talent in ‘Bama’s backfield. No question the Tide should be favorites here.”

Notre Dame Fighting Irish at Arizona State Sun Devils (-1.5)

Notre Dame (7-1 SU, 5-3 ATS) still harbors playoff hopes, but it can’t afford to lose another game, and even then will need a lot of help in the way of losses from higher-ranked teams. On Saturday, the Fighting Irish blew a 28-7 lead at Navy, ultimately having to rally for a 49-39 victory as a 14-point road chalk.

Likewise, ASU (7-1 SU, 4-4 ATS) has only one blemish on its record as it tries to claim the Pac-10 title. The Sun Devils fended off Utah 19-16 in overtime Saturday, falling short as 6.5-point home faves.

“The Irish have a chance to impress the playoff committee here, but I’m not confident they can get it done,” Lester said. “Navy's triple-option wears opponents out, and it did last week, so you have to wonder if there’ll be a defensive hangover. ASU’s protection along the line is certainly a concern. The Sun Devils will need to keep this contest low-scoring.”

Ohio State Buckeyes at Michigan State Spartans (-3.5)

Michigan State (7-1 SU, 5-3 ATS) is definitely in the thick of the four-team playoff chase, coming off a 35-11 spanking of instate rival Michigan as a 17-point home chalk, then getting a bye this past weekend.

Ohio State (6-1 SU, 5-2 ATS) is also coming off a bye and looking to play spoiler while shoring up its Big 10 title hopes. The Buckeyes barely held off Penn State in their last outing, winning 31-24 in overtime while failing to cover as a 14-point road fave.

“The postseason implications are huge, and we’ll have a ton of action on this marquee matchup,” Lester said. “There was no look-ahead for the Buckeyes last week, and they appear to be focused and prepared for this one. However, with the extra time and the home-field advantage, I like the Spartans to win again.”

Oregon Ducks at Utah Utes (+9.5)

Marcus Mariota and Oregon (8-1 SU, 5-4 ATS) aim to stay on track in the Pac-12 and in the national playoff picture. The Ducks come in off a 45-16 throttling of Stanford as a 7-point home favorite, their fourth straight win and cover since a stunning home upset loss to Arizona.

Utah has been an upstart this season and one of the best teams in the nation at the betting window, going 6-2 SU and 7-1 ATS. On Saturday night, the Utes couldn’t get the win, but did get the cover in a 19-16 overtime loss at Arizona State as 6.5-point pups.

“Oregon passed the smell test against a very good Stanford defense, and they’ll have to do the same here because the Utes can certainly get after the quarterback,” Lester said. “Utah will aim to shorten this game. There’s no pressure on the home team here, they’ll be loose, and I expect they’ll have some wise-guy support. They’ve been fantastic against the number this year.”

BG hasn't played in 17 days; they're 2-2 on road, allowing 42+ points in three of four games- since 2006, they're 21-13 as road underdogs, 0-1 this year. Tuesday college football betting preview: Bowling Green at Akron, Toledo at Kent State

Bowling Green Falcons at Akron Zips (-7, 58)

The Bowling Green Falcons will look to retain their hold on top spot in the Mid-American Conference's East Division as they visit InfoCision Stadium on Tuesday night for a date with the rival Akron Zips. The Falcons are coming off their first conference loss of the season last time out, a 26-14 setback to Western Michigan. The Zips should provide a stiff challenge as they return home following disappointing road losses to Ohio and Ball State.

Akron is coming off its most disappointing result of the season, having built a 21-6 lead against the Cardinals before surrendering 29 unanswered points and going scoreless in the second half. The Zips fell victim to five turnovers - including four interceptions thrown by Tommy Woodson, who came into the game with just two picks in his first six games. The Falcons have won two straight road games, scoring an average of 39 points in those victories.

TV: 8 p.m. ET, ESPN2.

WEATHER: Temperatures will be in the low-50s and forecasts are calling for a 42 percent chance of rain. Wind will blow across the field at 13 mph.

ABOUT BOWLING GREEN (5-3 SU, 3-5 ATS, 4-4 O/U): Sophomore quarterback James Knapke had a rough go of it in the loss to Western Michigan, completing 20 of 33 passes for 139 yards while failing to throw a touchdown pass for just the second time all season. Junior running back Travis Greene leads the Bowling Green ground assault, but has been held under 75 yards in each of his last three outings after reaching triple digits in three of the previous four. Roger Lewis paces the receiving corps with 53 catches for 706 yards and three scores.

ABOUT AKRON (4-4 SU, 2-6 ATS, 2-6 O/U): Pohl has missed the last two games for the Zips, and his absence has been felt dramatically; the junior pivot has 1,289 passing yards and seven touchdowns while throwing just three interceptions on the season. Woodson has started both games in Pohl's absence, completing just over 50 percent of his passes while throwing three TD passes and getting picked off six times. Conor Hundley (69 carries, 407 yards, three TDs) and Jawon Chisholm (54 carries, 253 yards, three TDs) lead a two-pronged rush attack.

Toledo Rockets at Kent State Golden Flashes (+13.5, 55)

The Toledo Rockets are flying high as they look to remain unbeaten in Mid-American Conference play Tuesday evening against the struggling Kent State Golden Flashes. The Rockets overcame a crushing road loss to Iowa State in style, surviving some nervous moments before ultimately prevailing 42-35 over visiting Massachusetts. The Golden Flashes aren't likely to put up much resistance, having scored more than 17 points just once all season.

The secret to Toledo's success so far in 2014: a potent rushing game that ranks among the top 20 in the nation in yards per game (248.4). That ground assault was on full display in the win over the Minutemen, as the Rockets racked up 295 rushing yards - 198 provided by Kareem Hunt - to overcome a 438-yard passing effort from Massachusetts quarterback Blake Frohnapfel. Kent State managed just 285 total yards in last week's 10-3 loss to Miami (Ohio).

ABOUT TOLEDO (5-3 SU, 2-6 ATS, 6-2 O/U): The Rockets' aerial attack is guided by sophomore Logan Woodside, who tied a season high with three touchdown passes while amassing 225 yards against the Minutemen. Woodside has done well to keep his composure away from Toledo, throwing for five TDs against just one interception in three road games in 2014. Hunt (85 carries, 725 yards, eight touchdowns) has a partner in crime in the backfield, joining with Terry Swanson (81 carries, 586 yards, six TDs) to form a lethal 1-2 punch.

ABOUT KENT STATE (1-7 SU, 2-6 ATS, 3-4-1 O/U): Second-year quarterback Colin Reardon was at his best in the Golden Flashes' lone victory of the season Oct. 18 over Army, throwing for 360 yards with three touchdowns. He came back to Earth the following week - completing just 21 of 39 passes for 201 yards and an interception - and could be in for a long night against a Kent State defense allowing just 209 passing yards per game. The Kent State running game has been virtually nonexistent, averaging just 2.7 yards on 221 carries.

Rain on tap for MAC games Tuesday

The Mid-American Conference takes center stage Tuesday evening as Akron hosts Bowling Green and Toledo visits Kent State. According to weather reports, there is a chance of rain and some wind in store for both games.

At Akron, forecasts are calling for a 42 percent chance of rain with wind blowing across the field at around 12 mph. Temperatures will start in the low-50s and dip to the high-40s as the game progresses.

At Kent State's Dix Stadium, similar conditions are in the forecast. Temperatures will be in the low-50s before dropping to the high-40s and there is a 40 percent chance of rain which increases to 79 percent later in the game.

Secondary could be an issue for Bowling Green

Bowling Green enters their clash with Akron trying to cement their status as the top team in the MAC, but they will need to improve their passing defense. So far this season, the Falcons are allowing opposing quarterbacks to complete 64.93 percent of their passes which ranks them No.114 in the nation.

BGU will face a Zips team that is throwing on 60.34 percent of their offensive plays, which has them ranked fifth in the country for passing frequency.

Bowling Green is currently 6.5-point road dogs Tuesday.

The best bets in college football you didn't know about

If you’re looking for college football’s biggest breadwinners, don’t waste your time betting on power conference programs. While a few top-tier teams have held their own against the spread, these small schools have consistently cashed in – and you didn’t even notice.

Georgia Southern Eagles: 7-2 SU, 8-1 ATS

The Eagles have been a 17-point or greater favorite in their last five games despite this being their first year in the FBS. They’ve covered in all of those contests except a road stop at New Mexico State.

Georgia Southern currently leads the nation in rushing yards, average yards per carry and rushing touchdowns. The Eagles are also 17th in turnover margin. An option team that doesn't turn the ball over (they've lost only nine on the year) is dangerous.

Southern has also benefited from playing a weak schedule. The last five teams it’s faced have a combined record of 8-35 SU this season. Bettor should be wary of GSU when the schedule amps up the last three weeks of the season, with two of those games (at Texas State, at Navy) on the road.

Western Michigan Broncos: 6-3 SU, 8-1 ATS

The Broncos were just 1-11 SU in 2013 so they’ve received some favorable spreads at the beginning of the year. But they've also won some impressive games outright (at Ball State and at Bowling Green).

A positive note is that WMU is getting better as the season goes on and has covered the spread by double-digits in each of the last three weeks (Broncos averaging plus-10.5 vs. the spread this season).

The Broncos are also doing it on both sides of the football, as they have the third-ranked offense and the third-ranked defense in the MAC. The next two games are against Central Michigan (5-5 ATS) and Eastern Michigan (4-5 ATS) – two in state rivalries for Western Michigan.

Louisiana Tech Bulldogs: 6-3 SU, 7-2 ATS

Like Western Michigan, the Bulldogs had a bad 2013 which resulted in them receiving some favorable spreads to start the season. With that, they still had to back into a cover in the opener against Oklahoma. Their last two wins have been solid, crushing Western Kentucky and winning at Southern Mississippi (the Golden Eagles scored late to make this look closer than it was).

What should scare you about the Bulldogs is their inconsistency. On the year, Louisiana Tech has three losses: Oklahoma, Auburn and Northwestern State. One of these things is not like the others. A team that loses to an FCS school is probably not the wisest place to invest your money but keep an eye on the line for the Old Dominion game in two weeks (ODU is 2-7 ATS).

UMass Minutemen: 2-7 SU, 7-2 ATS

The Minutemen are a team that is performing way above their previous versions and have won two of their last three games outright. They do have a backdoor cover against Bowling Green and they've blown some late leads (Miami (Ohio) and Vanderbilt) but they’re getting better.

Massachusetts has covered in five straight games, set as an underdog in all but one of those outings. In fact, UMass was a 15-point favorite versus Eastern Michigan two weeks ago – the first time it’s been favored since Week 9 of last season (-4 vs. Western Michigan).

The Minutemen have Ball State (4-4 ATS), Akron (2-6 ATS) and Buffalo (3-5 ATS) left on their schedule and enjoy a bye in Week 11 before playing two of their next three at home, where they’re 3-1 ATS.

After hot start, NIU has become awful ATS play

After starting the season 3-0 straight-up and against the spread, the Northern Illinois Huskies have fallen on hard times. The past five games have seen the Huskies post a 3-2 SU record while failing to cover in all the contests.

Three times NIU failed to cover by 20 or more points while missing the spread win by an average of 17 points per game.

Ohio's low scoring offense pandering to low total

Fans of the Ohio Bobcats have not been treated to high scoring games as of late. In Ohio's past five contests, the under has paid out four times.

Those five games have seen the Bobcats average a mere 20 ppg. Ohio quarterbacks have also thrown more interceptions (4) than touchdowns (3) during that span.

Bulls lost seven of last eight visits to Ohio, losing 38-31/34-17 in last two; the dog is 4-3 vs spread in last seven series games played here. Bobcats are 1-3 in last four games; two of their three I-A wins were by 3 points. MAC home favorites are 5-13 against spread. Hard to back team that fired its coach in-season (Buffalo). Ohio is 3-0 when it scored 23+ points 1-5 if it scored 21 or less.

Northern Illinois won its last five games with Ball State (3-2 vs spread); Huskies ran ball for 910 yards in last three series games- they won last two visits to Muncie, 35-23/59-21. NIU is 5-2 SU but 0-5 vs spread in last five games; they're 3-1 on road this year, winning by 8-14-11, with only loss at SEC's Arkansas. MAC home underdogs are 7-7 this year. Ball State won last two games, scoring 32-35 points, after losing its first five I-A games; Cardinals covered four of five as an underdog this year.

Wednesday college football betting preview: Buffalo at Ohio, Northern Illinois at Ball State

Buffalo Bulls at Ohio Bobcats (-4, 55.5)

The Buffalo Bulls have been a fan favorite this season - for all the wrong reasons. Buffalo will look to improve its road performance Wednesday night as it takes on the host Ohio Bobcats in Mid-American Conference action at Peden Stadium. The Bulls are 0-3 away from Buffalo on the season while allowing a whopping 120 points combined in those three games - a welcome sight for an Ohio team that is coming off a 42-21 rout at the hands of Western Michigan.

The Bulls would love nothing more than to repeat the success they had against Ohio last season, when they rolled to a 30-3 victory a year to the day of their next encounter. But they'll need to sort out a problem-riddled defense that has surrendered an average of 31 points during its three-game losing streak. The Bobcats have been inconsistent all season and are languishing in their worst stretch of the season, having dropped three of their past four games overall.

TV: 8 p.m. ET, ESPNU

WEATHER: Fans at Peden Stadium should expect overcast skies with a 63 percent chance of rain, temperatures in the low-50s and calm winds.

ABOUT BUFFALO (3-5 SU, 3-5 ATS, 5-3 O/U): The Bulls have one of the most potent passing attacks in the nation - led by quarterback Joe Licata, who has racked up 2,125 yards through the air with 20 touchdowns and nine interceptions. But good luck trying to figure out which of Licata's receivers to cover; the junior QB has completed passes to 15 different players on the season, with Ron Willoughby's 36 receptions leading the way. Junior running back Anthone Taylor ranks third in the conference in rushing yards (951) and touchdowns (nine).

ABOUT OHIO (4-5 SU, 4-5 ATS, 3-6 O/U): The Bobcats boast a largely underwhelming offensive attack, having scored just 19 offensive touchdowns through the first nine games of the season. This has played a major role in Ohio representing one of the strongest O/U plays in the conference, with only a porous defensive effort last time out against Western Michigan ending a four-game Under streak. Prior to last week, their only two Over plays exceeded the respective totals by a combined 3 1/2 points.

TRENDS:

* Buffalo is 8-1 ATS in its last nine games against teams with losing records.
* Ohio is 1-6 ATS in its last seven November games.
* Over is 6-1 in the Bulls' last seven road games.
* Under is 4-1 in the Bobcats' last five home games.

Northern Illinois Huskies at Ball State Cardinals (+3, 63)

If the Northern Illinois Huskies are going to take over top spot in the Mid-American Conference, they'll have to earn it. The Huskies begin a grueling stretch to end the season Wednesday as they visit the Ball State Cardinals in a pivotal MAC tilt at Scheumann Stadium. Northern Illinois is coming off impressive back-to-back victories, the latest a 28-17 triumph over Eastern Michigan; the Cardinals have also won two straight, most recently a 35-21 rout of Akron.

Paced by one of the nation's most potent rushing attacks, Northern Illinois has rolled to 79 points in its past two games but will finish the season with three of four games away from Huskie Stadium. And if that weren't enough, its last three opponents - Toledo, Ohio and Western Michigan - come into the week a combined 10-4 in conference play. But first, a date with a Ball State team that has been impressive in its own right, scoring 69 points in its past two games.

WEATHER: Temperatures at Scheumann Stadium will be in the mid-40s with partly cloudy skies. Wind will blow across the length of the field at 6 mph.

ABOUT NORTHERN ILLINOIS (6-2 SU, 3-5 ATS, 3-5 O/U): Any discussion of Northern Illinois' offensive prowess begins in the backfield, where QB Drew Hare (76 carries, 581 yards, five TDs), Cameron Stingily (91 carries, 477 yards, five TDs) and Joel Bouagnon (76 carries, 414 yards, five TDs) represent one of the most lethal three-pronged attacks in the country. The Huskies are averaging 5.3 yards per carry as a team, and their 21 rushing touchdowns are tied for second in the conference. Hare has been solid throwing the ball, as well, with 11 touchdowns and just one interception.

ABOUT BALL STATE (3-5 SU, 4-4 ATS, 3-5 O/U): The Cardinals made a quarterback switch in mid-season, taking Ozzie Mann out of the starting role despite the third-year sophomore throwing six TD passes against just two interceptions. He was replaced by fellow sophomore Jack Milas, who hasn't been any more accurate than his predecessor but has a 5-to-0 touchdown-to-interception ratio while leading Ball State to consecutive victories. Jahwan Edwards is the star of the show on offense, rushing for 828 yards and eight touchdowns while racking up four 100-yard performances.

Small chance of rain at Peden Stadium Wednesday

The MAC is back on the Wednesday night schedule and their is a small chance of rain as the Ohio Bobcats host the Buffalo Bulls from Peden Stadium Wednesday.

Forecasts are calling for a 26 percent chance of rain early, but that will increase to 40 percent as the game progresses.

Temperatures will start in the low-50s and drop to the high-40s and will blow toward the north endzone at 2 mph.
