    Armadillo: Monday's six-pack

-- Six most popular picks in the Westgate Super Contest were 3-3 this week, are 17-13 so far this season.

-- Royals 8, Angels 3-- Halos are 10-22 in playoff games since '02 Series.

-- Orioles 2, Tigers 1-- Buck Showalter is a pretty good manager.

-- Illinois QB Wes Lunt broke his leg, is out 4-6 weeks; they'll miss him.

-- NBA is going to announce TV deals with ESPN, TNT Monday worth $24B. Thats billion, with a B.

-- The world is slowly going crazy: NFL has a partnership with Bose, so NFL players have been told not to wear Beats by Dre headphones near cameras. Oy.

    **********

Armadillo: Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports Sunday.....

    13) Panthers 31, Bears 24-- Chicago turned ball over on its last three possessions, all inside its own 35, as they blew a 21-7 lead, with 21 of 31 Carolina points coming in last 5:00 of each half. Panthers also ran a punt back for a TD.

    12) Browns 29, Titans 28-- Cleveland won after trailing 28-3; they scored first TD with 0:12 left in first half, starting biggest comeback ever by an NFL road team. All three Browns' games have been decided in last 1:09. Jake Locker got hurt, Tennessee had only one QB for rest of the game. NFL teams need to be able to dress a 3rd QB for every game, for emergencies-- would make the game better.

Titans went for it on 4th-and-1 from their own 44 with 3:08 left, when they led by six points. With a backup QB who doesn't run. It didn't turn out well.

    11) Eagles 34, Rams 28-- Jeff Fisher inherited a dumpster fire from his incompetent predecessor; in 2+ years since, he's upgraded the talent base, but now his team is so young, they constantly make stupid mistakes and shoot themselves in the foot. So far this season, Rams have 305 penalty yards; their opponents have 105.

    10) Giants 30, Falcons 20-- Matt Ryan has now lost his last nine outdoor games; he was 2-of-8 for 44 yards and an interception on throws 15+ yards downfield, no bueno. Giants have won three in row after an 0-2 start, but Manning still looks uncomfortable moving out of pocket. Big game in Philly Thursday.

    9) Saints 37, Buccaneers 31 OT-- Home side won all five Saint games so far; Bucs led 31-20 with 10:00 left, but Brees threw for 371 yards and Tampa had 113 yards in penalties. Saints ran 86 plays for 511 yards; it is very rare for an NFL team to have 86 snaps in one game.

    8) Cowboys 20, Texans 17 OT-- Dallas ran the ball on 22 of 32 first down plays in this game, with Murray gaining 93 of his 136 yards on 1st down. Underdogs are now 26-8 vs spread in Cowboy home games in Garrett era; he is 6-21 as a home favorite. TV networks have to be thrilled that public favorite Cowboys are 4-1.

    7) Bills 17, Lions 14-- Buffalo players carried DC Schwartz (former Lion HC) off on shoulders after this win; Lions were just 1-11 on 3rd down, were outgained by 80 yards in Orton's first start as Buffalo QB. Detroit led 14-0 early after a defensive TD, but offense was held scoreless by Schwartz' defense for last three quarters, due to three missed FGs by Detroit kicker Henery, who might not be the kicker by the time you read this.

    6) Colts 20, Ravens 13-- Indy outgained Ravens 422-287, Baltimore was just 1-11 on third down. Score could've been bigger had Colts not turned ball over twice in red zone- they had 12-yard edge in field position. Thru first four weeks, there had been 90 defensive holding calls; thru four weeks in 2013, there had been 38.

    5) Steelers 17, Jaguars 9-- Pittsburgh had been 0-8 vs spread in last eight tries as road favorite of 6+ points; McCain's pick-6 with 11:32 left provided final margin of victory. Jaguars are now 0-5 vs spread, but they have showed some life in last two games. Hard to win playing a rookie QB.

    4) Broncos 41, Cardinals 20-- Arizona rookie QB Thomas made NFL debut; weird stat line, going 1-8 passing, with only completion an 81-yard TD to Ellington. Now Arizona could be down to #3 QB, and they've already had their bye. You knew the bye would help Denver, now that Welker is back on board.

    3) 49ers 22, Chiefs 17-- Candlestick was tough place to kick, but Dawson booted five FGs, as Levi's Field is more kicker-friendly. as Niners pulled off a fake punt on the drive where they went ahead 17-16. When a team kicks five FGs it means their offense is struggling in red zone.

    2) Chargers 31, Jets 0-- Total yardage: 439-151. Jets' longest play was 13 yards; they played 34-year Vick at QB in second half. Talk radio in NYC should be lot of fun Monday. San Diego might be best team in NFL so far. If I owned the Jets, I'd ask my GM why we never have good receivers, as in, ever?

    1) Patriots 43, Bengals 17-- Cincinnati was in wrong place at wrong time Sunday; this will be best game Pats play all year. NE ran ball for 220 yards; Bengals were 0-7 on third down, lost three fumbles. If they play in January, Bengals will win.

NCAAF opening line report: Ole Miss getting well-deserved respect

After a weekend that shuffled the odds deck for the college football playoff, Week 7 features more key games, with the Southeastern Conference again front and center. But with a twist.

Auburn Tigers at Mississippi State Bulldogs (+3)

Mississippi State (5-0 SU, 4-1 ATS) suddenly finds itself among those at the head of the class, and the Bulldogs will get a great chance to prove they belong when they host No. 2 Auburn (5-0 SU, 3-2 ATS) on Saturday.

Mississippi State is coming off a convincing 48-31 victory as a 2.5-point road favorite over then-unbeaten and seventh-ranked Texas A&M. The Tigers, meanwhile, dodged the carnage of top-10 losers in Week 6, hammering Louisiana State 41-7 as a 7-point home chalk.

Last year, Auburn needed a final-seconds TD to net a 24-20 home victory as a 6.5-point favorite.

“This is a very intriguing matchup and a tough one to set a line for,” said John Lester, senior lines manager for bookmaker.eu. “It’s two of the most explosive offenses in the game, despite being ground-centered. This was a tight game last year, and it didn’t live up to the high-scoring hype.”

Mississippi Rebels at Texas A&M Aggies (-2)

Ole Miss (5-0, 4-0-1 ATS) also jumped into the playoff conversation by knocking off then-No. 1 Alabama on Saturday 24-17, getting 4 points at home. But the Rebels, now ranked fourth, will face a stewing A&M unit (5-1 SU, 3-3 ATS, No. 14 ranking) after the Aggies’ 48-31 loss catching 2.5 points at Mississippi State.

“We’ve had our doubts about the Aggies’ defense, and it certainly was exposed against Mississippi State,” Lester said. “On the other side, it’s confirmed that the Ole Miss defense is legit. This is a letdown spot for the Rebels, but I still like them to win here.”

Texas Longhorns vs. Oklahoma Sooners (-14.5)

No. 9 Oklahoma (4-1 SU, 3-2 ATS) saw its national title hopes take a hefty blow in a 37-33 loss at Texas Christian as a 3.5-point road fave, and now must gear up for the Red River Rivalry at a neutral site – the Cotton Bowl in Dallas. Texas (2-3 SU, 3-2 ATS) got drubbed on its home field as a 13.5-point ‘dog Saturday, falling 28-7 to now No. 3 Baylor.

“Well, the Red River Rivalry isn’t much of a showdown these days. And it lost even more luster after OU’s loss on Saturday,” Lester said. “Texas was in a good position to play well (vs. Baylor) and fell flat on its face. I’m not expecting a shootout here – more of a defensive battle.”

Oregon Ducks at UCLA Bruins (+3.5)

Both these teams got bit by the Week 6 upset bug and now must regroup if they have any hope of winning the Pac-12 title and earning a spot in the season-ending four-team playoff. Oregon (4-1 SU, 1-4 ATS), which was ranked fourth and was a massive 21.5-point home chalk last Thursday against Arizona, lost to the Wildcats 31-24 and dropped to 11th in the rankings.

On Saturday, UCLA trailed the entire way against Utah until a touchdown with 4:50 remaining gave the Bruins a 28-27 lead. But Jim Mora’s troops, laying 13 points at home, lost outright 30-27 on a last-minute Utes field goal. UCLA (4-1 SU, 1-4 ATS) dropped from ninth to 17th in the coaches poll.

“Which one of these teams is going to be able to bounce back from the devastating loss?” Lester said. “Like we’re seeing with the Eagles in the NFL, the Ducks’ offensive line is beat up, hindering their offensive ability. UCLA has some serious issues along the line as well.”

Trend shows Nationals have Bumgarner's number

The San Francisco Giants and Washington Nationals face off in the Bay Area for Game 3 of their National League Divisional Series Monday, and there's one particular trend bettors planning on wagering on the game need to be aware of.

Madison Bumgarner takes the hill for the Giants, but the 25-year-old is just 1-5 in his last six outings versus Washington. Doug Fister counters for the Nats.

Cardinals lights out with Lackey pitching at home

John Lackey will start Game 3 of the St. Louis Cardinals' Divisional Series against the Los Angeles Dodgers at Busch Stadium Monday, which will surely please Cards backers.

In Lackey's last 5 starts in St. Louis, the Cardinals are a perfect 5-0. After two games in California the series is tied 1-1.

Hyun-Jin Ryu will counter on the bump for the Dodgers.

Washington Nationals at San Francisco Giants (-127, 6)

After recording a National League-best 96 victories during the regular season, the Washington Nationals will need one on Monday just to remain alive in their best-of-five Division Series versus the San Francisco Giants. Winning Game 3 will be tough against host San Francisco, which secured its NL-best 10th straight victory on the strength of a ninth-inning rally and Brandon Belt's homer nine frames later in a 2-1 triumph on Saturday. "Who'd have thought we'd have come here and won the first two?" Giants hurler Tim Hudson said after the 6-hour, 23-minute marathon. "Everybody in America probably didn't think we had a shot. But everybody in this locker room knew that we did."

What the NL East-champion Nationals know is their task on Monday will be a difficult one against Madison Bumgarner, who struck out 10 and scattered four hits to lead the Giants to an 8-0 rout of Pittsburgh in the wild-card game on Wednesday. Doug Fister will provide the opposition on Monday but has allowed Pablo Sandoval to record four hits in five career plate appearances. The sizable Sandoval certainly came through on Saturday as he delivered an RBI double with two out in the ninth inning to improve to 21-for-57 during his club-record 13-game postseason hitting streak.

            TV:
            5:07 p.m. ET, MLBN

            PITCHING MATCHUP:
Nationals RH Doug Fister (16-6, 2.41 ERA) vs. Giants LH Madison Bumgarner (19-10, 2.86)

Fister answered a three-game losing streak by winning his final four starts of the regular season - in dominating fashion, no less. The 30-year-old scattered three hits and struck out nine in a complete-game gem versus Miami on Sept. 26. Fister, who has yielded four earned runs on 15 hits in his last four outings (28 2/3 innings), suffered the loss against San Francisco on Aug. 22 after permitting four runs in six frames of a 10-3 setback.

Bumgarner won five of his final six decisions of the regular season but suffered the tough-luck loss in his lone meeting with Washington in 2014. The 25-year-old permitted two runs on eight hits in seven innings en route to a 2-1 setback on June 10. Bumgarner owns a 2-3 mark with a slim 2.60 ERA and 1.09 WHIP in seven career starts versus the Nationals.

            WALK-OFFS:

            1. San Francisco C Buster Posey is 4-for-10 in the series and 6-for-15 in the postseason.

            2. Washington 3B Anthony Rendon, who is 5-for-11 over the first two games of the set, is 3-for-5 with a double in his career versus Bumgarner.

            3. The Giants dropped the first two contests at home in the 2012 NLDS versus Cincinnati and rallied to win before going on to capture the World Series title.

Los Angeles Dodgers at St. Louis Cardinals (-102, 7.5)

The St. Louis Cardinals attempt to gain the upper hand in their National League Division Series when they host the Los Angeles Dodgers for Game 3 on Monday. NL Central champion St. Louis pulled off an improbable comeback against Los Angeles ace Clayton Kershaw and posted a 10-9 victory in the opener and rallied to forge a tie in Game 2 before Matt Kemp led off the eighth inning with a homer to give the Dodgers a 3-2 triumph. Zach Greinke pitched a whale of a game, allowing two hits over seven scoreless frames before being replaced after initially taking the mound to start the eighth.

Los Angeles will need to find a way to control Matt Carpenter, who belted a solo homer and a three-run double in the opener and hit the tying two-run shot in Game 2. The Dodgers have a pair of hot hitters themselves, with one being very unlikely. Kemp is 5-for-9 over the first two games while A.J. Ellis has recorded five hits in eight at-bats (4-for-5 in Game 1) with a homer, two RBIs and four runs scored.

            PITCHING MATCHUP:
Dodgers LH Hyun-Jin Ryu (14-7, 3.38 ERA) vs. Cardinals RH John Lackey (14-10, 3.82)

Ryu will be making his first start since Sept. 12, when he was battered for four runs and five hits in one inning before exiting with shoulder inflammation. The 27-year-old South Korean lost two of his last three decisions but allowed more than three runs only once in his last nine starts. Ryu is 1-1 in two career regular-season outings against the Cardinals, losing at St. Louis on June 27, but scattered three hits over seven scoreless innings en route to victory in Game 3 of last year's NL Championship Series.

Lackey was a hard-luck loser to the Cubs in his final regular-season start, allowing just two runs over 6 2/3 innings at Chicago on Sept. 24. The 35-year-old, who went 3-3 with a 4.30 ERA in 10 outings after being acquired from Boston, yielded fewer than three earned runs in seven of his last eight turns. Lackey is 5-3 lifetime with a 1.93 ERA against Los Angeles in the regular season and 6-5 with a 3.03 ERA in 19 career postseason games, including three relief appearances.

            WALK-OFFS:

            1. Los Angeles RF Yasiel Puig has struck out in each of his last five at-bats, including all four in Game 2.

            2. St. Louis won all three home games against the Dodgers in last year's NLCS.

            3. RHP Dan Haren is tentatively slated to start Game 4 for Los Angeles on Tuesday, while RHP Shelby Miller makes his first career postseason start for St. Louis.
