    Armadillo: Friday's six-pack

NFL trends with Week 5 upon us........

-- Carolina covered seven of last nine as a home favorite.

-- Seahawks are 5-19 vs spread in games following a bye.

    -- Bengals are 22-6-2 in last 30 non-divisional games.

-- Tampa Bay covered only four of last 14 road games.

-- Cowboys are 6-19 vs spread in last 25 games as home favorite.

    -- Chargers are 8-4 as a non-divisional home favorite.

    **********

Armadillo: Friday's List of 13: Things I'm looking for this weekend....

    13) Alex Smith was dumped by San Francisco after going 19-5-1 as starting QB in 2011-12; now he returns to he Bay Area as QB of the resurgent Chiefs. You gotta believe this game means an awful lot to Smith, more than a normal game.

    12) Alabama has treated Ole Miss like a piñata for years, but now ESPN Gameday will be in Oxford Saturday and Rebels think they’ve got a shot to win the SEC West for the first time. We’ll see about that.

    11) Lions fired Jim Schwartz after last season; now he returns to Motor City as the Buffalo DC; much like Alex Smith, think this game means extra to him? Curious to see how Buffalo's defense works to contain Matthew Stafford's passing game.

    10) Nebraska-Michigan State is an early big game in the Big 14; Spartans’ rise to prominence has coincided with Michigan spiraling into mediocrity. Good road test for the Cornhuskers.

    9) Feel strongly that we’ll see the Patriots’ best effort Sunday vs Cincinnati; now it is debatable what that best effort will be- they looked so slow Monday night in Kansas City. Bengals are a road favorite in Foxboro in Week 5? Takes a leap of faith to back the Patriots, but they’ve earned that; will be interesting game to watch.

    8) LSU is a 9-point dog at Auburn; the SEC West is totally loaded, every team is good. Not sure LSU is mature enough at QB to get this road win.

    7) College basketball practice begins this weekend; we’ve started preparation for the season, with games starting in about five weeks.

    6) Falcons’ defense has been terrible in their two road losses; now they visit Giant team that had 10 days to prepare for this after two strong efforts that evened their record at 2-2.

    5) Haven’t heard much from TCU since they joined the Big X; small fish in big ponds don’t get noticed as much. Oklahoma visits Fort Worth this weekend; good chance for the Horned Frogs to get noticed.

    4) Unbeaten Cardinals are 7-point dog in Denver, where they’re winless in four trips. Both sides are coming off byes. Doesn’t sound good for Carson Palmer’s arm; he was going to a different doctor for tests on it this week.

    3) 3-1 Houston visits 3-1 Dallas, in battle of Texas. Cowboys have been running ball well; not sure how healthy Arian Foster or Andre Johnson are, which hamstrings the Houston offense. When will Ryan Mallett become the Houston QB?

    2) Baseball playoffs have four series going on this weekend; the two AL series have managing mismatches, as Showalter has edge over Detroit’s rookie manager Ausmus, and Scioscia is light years better than Ned Yost as a skipper. Players still decide the outcome, but having en edge on the bench doesn’t hurt.

    1) Redskins turned ball over six times in their last game, a horrible home loss to the Giants; now the defending champ Seahawks come to town with a better defense. Kirk Cousins better step up his game, or else. As for the proposed FCC ban on the name “Redskins” , whatever happened to free speech in this country?

      Armadillo's Write-Up

      Week 15

Winnipeg (6-7) @ Ottawa (1-11)—RedBlacks’ first game was 36-28 (+3.5) loss at Winnipeg in Week 2, when Ottawa led 21-17 at half, then scored only 7 second half points. RedBlacks lost last nine games (3-6 vs spread), but in only three of those games did they trail by more than 5 points at the half- they’re 1-5 at home, 3-3 as home underdogs. Ottawa scored 8-7-5-7 points in its last four home games. Winnipeg lost last four games and six of last seven after a 5-1 start; they’re 3-3 SU on road, despite being underdog in all six games. They’re 2-2 vs spread when favored. Week 6 vs Roughriders was only game Ottawa outscored its opponents in second half. Five of last six Ottawa games stayed under total.

Calgary (11-2) @ Saskatchewan (9-4)—First meeting of season between rivals who will see lot of each other in next few weeks; Saskatchewan beat Calgary 35-13 in LY’s playoffs as they marched to Grey Cup title, just their third win in last 12 series games. Stampeders lost last two visits to Taylor Field 30-25/36-21 after winning last four visits before that; they’ve won seven of last eight games overall, with 31-15 loss at Montreal two weeks ago their only loss in six road games (5-1 as road favorite). Roughriders are 5-1 at home, with only loss to BC in Week 3; they’re switching to former Texas Tech QB Doege as they try to end recent 1-2 slide, with win in OT over Ottawa.

Edmonton (9-4) @ Toronto (4-8)—Argos lost four of last five games, one of which was 41-27 (+7.5) loss at Edmonton six weeks ago; Eskimos had five takeaways, ran ball for 152 yards in game they led 31-10 at the half. Win snapped Toronto’s 3-game series win streak, but Argos have lost four of last six visits here. This is first Toronto home game in five weeks; they’re 2-2 at home, and were underdog in three of those games. Eskimos are 2-3 in last five games after 7-1 start, losing last two road games, allowing 28-25 points at Calgary/Hamitlon; they’re 0-3 vs Edmonton, 9-1 vs everyone else. Lions won four of last six visits here; lost last two games overall, allowing 326 rushing yards; they’re 4-2 on road, with only losses 24-9 at Montreal, 14-7 at Calgary last week. Seven of last ten series games went over total, but five of last six BC games and five of last seven TiCat games stayed under. All four CFL games last weekend had totals of 27 or less points, kind of unusual.

Offense kept to a minimum for traveling Stampeders

The Calgary Stampeders have been money for totals bettors over the past two seasons. In Calgary's past 12 road games, the team has a 1-11 over/under record.

Those 12 road games have seen the Stamps average 27 points while keeping opponents to 19 points per game.

The total is currently set for 47.

Redblacks giving home fans no excitement

It may be their inaugural season, but the Ottawa Redblacks are not doing anything on the field to attract fans. In their six home games this season, the Redblacks have averaged 9.8 points per game.

This has led to an over/under record of 1-5 with the past four games going under at the TD Place Stadium.

Nationals Park truly is home for Strasburg

As if Stephen Strasburg wasn't already good enough, he has been absolutely lights out at home this season. The young ace is 9-3 with a 2.56 ERA at Nationals Park this season.

To make things worse for the Giants, Strasburg is 3-0 with a 0.00 ERA in his last three starts

Wainwright on par with Kershaw in ace battle

Though Clayton Kershaw is undeniably the best pitcher in baseball, Adam Wainwright could be matching him Friday. Kershaw is sporting a 10-2 record with a 1.70 ERA at Dodger Stadium this season, while Wainwright is 11-6 with a 1.72 ERA on the road.

The two aces have faced each other four times in their careers with the teams combining for six runs and 11.5 K's per game.

Shoemaker quietly dominating over past three months

Though he may not get much fanfare, Matt Shoemaker has become one of the top pitchers on the Angels over the past three months. The rightie has started 14 games since the start of July and the Angels have gone 12-2 during those starts.

Shoemaker has only allowed more than two runs three times since July 1 while striking out an average of five batters per game.

Verlander conquering Orioles in his career

They may be no team that Justin Verlander has been more dominant against in his career than the Baltimore Orioles. Over his nine year career, Verlander has faced the O's 15 times and the Tigers have gone 12-3 in those starts.

The rightie has only allowed 2.6 runs per game while striking out six per outing.
