    Armadillo: Wednesday's six-pack

Current odds to win the Super Bowl.........

7-2-- Seattle-- Heavy is the head that wears the crown.

9-2-- Denver-- John Fox once got to a Super Bowl with Jake Delhomme at QB.

8-1-- Patriots-- Belichick's record without Tom Brady: 51-62.

10-1-- Bengals-- Have played the best thru first three weeks.

10-1-- Saints-- Haven't shown much; do they miss Sproles?

12-1-- 49ers-- Outscored 52-3 in second half of first three games.

    **********

Armadillo: Wednesday's List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud.......

    13) John Calipari and Jim Boeheim are speaking at the same coaching clinic this Saturday here in Albany at the College of St Rose, but they likely won’t cross paths; Boeheim speaks at 9, Calipari at 1.

Billy Donovan, Seth Greenberg and Mike Fratello are also speaking at the event, which is Howard Garfinkel’s annual coaching clinic.

    12) Roughly 40 Division I basketball teams took foreign trips this summer; best benefit for coaches, other than team bonding, are the ten extra practices they’re allowed before the trip.

    11) Stephen Ross owns the Miami Dolphins; he went to Michigan. So did Jim Harbaugh. Look for the Dolphins to make a serious run at Harbaugh if the Dolphins miss the playoffs, but then again, Michigan could be going after him, too.

    10) If Eagles’ QB Nick Foles ever got hurt, how would Mark Sanchez do in Chip Kelly’s offense? He is Philly’s backup QB, after all. Had Sanchez chosen to sign with the Rams over Philly, he’s already be the Rams starter, with Sam Bradford hurt. I’m not complaining; think Austin Davis is doing just fine, but thought Sanchez made a poor choice when choosing teams to sign with.

    9) A sporting goods store in Maryland must think a lot of Kirk Cousins; they already have RGIII jerseys listed at 40% off.

    8) Lions LB Stephen Tulloch tore his ACL Sunday while celebrating a sack, in a similar injury to when Kendrys Morales broke his ankle after jumping on home plate when he hit a walk-off homer. Tough way for your season to end; weird that an ACL can go so quickly, without contact.

    7) Dodger pitcher Dan Haren hit 180-inning plateau Monday night, kicking in his player option for 2015 and earning him a $500,000 bonus. Good night for him.

    6) Steve Spurrier was so annoyed that Vanderbilt ran two kicks back for TDs last week, he said he would coach special teams this week. Curious to see if he adds any starters to the coverage teams, or just coaches up the kids who were already there. Doubt special teamers usually get much attention from the Head Ball Coach.

    5) Bill Barnwell of ESPN.com came up with a great stat Monday; when Denver drove for the tying TD in the last 0:56 Sunday, they bucked a 2-for-76 skid by NFL teams who trailed by 7 or 8 points with 1:15 or less to play, and had the ball 75+ yards from the goal line. That’s who unusual Denver’s tying drive was, but they never got back on the field to try and win the game.

    4) I’m thinking MLB should mirror football and let the manager throw a flag from the dugout to signal that they want a replay review. Would quicken the review process by a little; God knows we don’t want the media having to sit there for five or ten extra minutes every night.

    3) Once the QB crosses the line of scrimmage with the ball, he should lose all protection he gets by being a QB. If he’s gaining yards, then he should be fair game to be hit like anyone else gets hit.

    2) NFL teams that are minus-2 or worse in turnovers are already 4-20.

    1) Cool moment in Texas Monday night, when 13-year minor league veteran Guilder Rodriguez got his first two big league hits, after 4,095 plate appearances in the minor leagues. That’s a long way to wait for the call to the bigs; too bad he won’t get to travel big league-style; Rangers are home all week to finish the season.

Mid-Major Money: Big profits from NCAAF small conferences

Team to watch: Bowling Green Falcons (2-2 SU, 2-2 ATS)

      This week: -4.5 at UMass

This line is absolutely on the move for Saturday’s MAC showdown between Bowling Green and Massachusetts. The Falcons opened at least -10 (-12.5 at some), but the line is down to as low as -4.5. Giving no more than a touchdown, now might be the perfect time to jump all over Bowling Green.

Bettors are perhaps scared off by the Falcons after both teams looked similarly poor against the Big Ten last week. Bowling Green got blown out 68-17 at Wisconsin and Massachusetts fell 48-7 at Penn State.

Bowling Green is also without quarterback Matt Johnson, who is done for the year. However, James Knapke has stepped in and has thrown for 795 yards and four touchdowns in three games. Knapke racked up 395 yards and three scores in a win over Indiana, which upset Missouri last week.

Team to beware: Western Kentucky Hilltoppers (1-2 SU, 1-2 ATS)

      This week: +7 at Navy

Don’t be fooled by Western Kentucky’s 19-7 home win over Navy last season. Midshipmen quarterback Keenan Reynolds was knocked out of that game in the second quarter with the visitors ahead 7-3.

Reynolds is good to go for Saturday’s rematch in Annapolis. After attempting only 12 passes in the first two games of 2014, the junior was 12 of 22 for 231 yards and a score as Navy took to the air in a 31-24 loss to Rutgers last week. Reynolds also has five rushing touchdowns in three games this year, including four in his last two.

Western Kentucky will have its hands full against an offense that ranks 15th nationally in third-down conversions, getting the job done more than 52 percent of the time. The Hilltoppers’ defense lost six starters from last season’s team and the unit is currently 116th in the nation overall (508.7 yards per game) and 114th in points allowed (41.0 per game).

Total team: Fresno State Bulldogs (1-3 SU, 4-0 O/U)

      This week: at New Mexico

Fresno State head coach Tim DeRuyter said people will “probably figure it out” when it comes to who will start at quarterback against New Mexico Friday. That inevitably means the job is going to Brian Burrell, who played approximately two quarters and completed 13 of 20 passes for 145 yards, two touchdowns, and one interception last weekend.

On the other side of the ball, Fresno State safety Derron Smith said this is a game he does not look forward to, going up against New Mexico’s option offense. Smith admitted the defense has not been disciplined this season and it is “definitely going to be a struggle.”

The Over is 4-0-1 in the Bulldogs’ last five overall and 3-0-1 in their last four home games. The Over is 6-1 in the Lobos’ last seven at home and 5-1 in their last six Mountain West contests.

Four live NCAAF long shots that smell blood in the water

There’s blood in the water when it comes to many college football conferences, with perineal favorites falling off the pace and surprise contenders emerging as conference competition heats up.

Here are four mid-tier teams off to strong starts, who could stun the NCAAF world – and sportsbooks – if they continue to climb the standings:

Duke Blue Devils (4-0 SU, 2-1-1 ATS)

Odds to win ACC Championship: +1,600

Many forget that Duke was the other participant in last year’s ACC Championship game and also hung with Johnny Manziel and Texas A&M in their bowl game.

After a 10-4 season, Duke is 4-0 and headed on a similar path this year. The Blue Devils’ schedule hasn't been very tough but they've done what they were supposed to and currently rank 17th in the nation in scoring offense and seventh in scoring defense.

Duke also has a very favorable schedule as it doesn’t play Florida State, Clemson or Louisville. Duke could very well win the Coastal this year with FSU not playing like the world beater it was last season.

Mississippi State Bulldogs (4-0 SU, 3-1 ATS)

Odds to win SEC Championship: +2,000

The Bulldogs finally got over the hump by beating LSU in Death Valley last week. This puts them in a great position but they still have an extremely tough schedule including home games against Texas A&M and Auburn coming up over the next three weeks.

What might give MSU an edge is its SEC East opponents: Kentucky and Vanderbilt. If there was ever a year that the West was wide open, it's this year and this is arguably Dan Mullen's most talented team.

Penn State Nittany Lions (4-0 SU, 3-1 ATS)

Odds to win Big Ten Championship: +4,000

The Nittany Lions have recently received eligibility for the postseason and they could sneak up on some with such big odds against them. In their favor, the Big Ten is down overall this season.

Not in PSU’s favor is the fact it still has very tough matchups with divisional foes Michigan State and Ohio State. They do get a bye the week before playing Ohio State and both that game and the game against the Spartans are at home.

Wyoming Cowboys (3-1 SU, 2-2 ATS)

Odds to win MWC Championship: +3,000

Everybody in the MWC already has at least one loss and the door is swinging wide open for anybody.

From 2011 to 2013, Wyoming's new head coach had a record of 43-2 and won three FCS National Championships. Craig Bohl knows how to win and he's shown that already with the Cowboys by leading them to three close victories that they probably would have lost last season.

If you are looking for an underdog in this conference, they could end up being a good value.

Game of the Day: Giants at Dodgers
                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

San Francisco Giants at Los Angeles Dodgers (-255, 6)

The Los Angeles Dodgers have a magic number of one for winning the National League West and, appropriately, will have their magic man on the mound when they go for the division clincher. Clayton Kershaw seeks his major league-leading 21st victory as the Dodgers host the second-place San Francisco Giants in Wednesday's finale of the three-game series. Kershaw has won six consecutive starts and can match his career high for victories set in 2011, when he won his first Cy Young Award.

San Francisco is jockeying with Pittsburgh for the top wild card and home-field advantage for the one-game playoff, and fell a game behind the Pirates with the loss. While the Giants may not want to witness Los Angeles clinching at their expense, they also have a magic number of one for nailing down a wild-card slot, leading Milwaukee by five games with five to play. San Francisco is getting no production from the middle of its lineup, with Hunter Pence mired in a 1-for-25 slump and Pablo Sandoval in a 2-for-24 rut.

                TV:
10:10 p.m. ET, CSN Bay Area (San Francisco), SportsNet LA (Los Angeles)

                LINE HISTORY:
Pinnacle Sports opened the Dodgers as -235 fave but have moved to -255. The total has held at six.

                INJURY REPORT:
Giants - LF Michael Morse (Questionable, oblique), CF Angel Pagan (Out for season).

                POWER RANKINGS:
                Giants (-175), Dodgers (-195)

                WEATHER:
Temperatures in the mid-70s with clear skies. Wind will blow out to right field at 5 mph.

                PITCHING MATCHUP:
Giants RH Tim Hudson (9-12, 3.52 ERA) vs. Dodgers LH Clayton Kershaw (20-3, 1.80)

Hudson won seven of his first nine decisions with the Giants and owned a major league-leading 1.81 ERA on June 12, but he has won only twice since then. The 39-year-old Hudson has been knocked around for 14 runs in 11 1/3 innings over a three-start skid, including a disastrous performance versus Los Angeles on Sept. 13, when he was pounded for six runs in in a career-low one-plus innings. Hudson has fared well away from home with a 2.88 ERA in 15 starts.

Kershaw labored through five innings at the Chicago Cubs last time out, giving up three runs on seven hits, but still managed to win his sixth consecutive start. Kershaw won at San Francisco on Sept. 14 with eight innings of two-run ball to improve to 13-5 with a 1.44 ERA lifetime against the Giants. Kershaw has tormented Pence, who is 4-for-49 with 11 strikeouts against him, while limiting Brandon Crawford to 1-for-17.

                TRENDS:

                * Under is 16-3-2 in Kershaws last 21 starts vs. Giants.
                * Giants are 1-4 in Hudson's last five road starts.
                * Dodgers are 4-0 in their last four games with Fairchild behind home plate.
                * Dodgers are 9-0 in Kershaws last nine starts as a home favorite of -201 or greater.

                CONSENSUS:
64 percent of wagers on Consensus are backing Kershaw and the Dodgers.

                  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
MLB Mid-week betting cheat sheet: Kershaw an automatic win
                  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Here’s a comprehensive look at betting notes for the mid-week major-league games:

                  NL an Under Haven

Tuesday’s action saw all seven National League games hit the Under, despite five of those games carrying a modest total of 6.5. None of the 14 NL teams involved scored more than four runs, while one - the Philadelphia Phillies - was shut out.

                  Kershaw’s Curtain Call

Dodgers ace Clayton Kershaw will make his final regular-season start Wednesday as Los Angeles (-255, 6) hosts the San Francisco Giants. Kershaw (20-3, 1.70 ERA) ranks second in the majors in value ($1,482), while the Dodgers are 19-1 in his last 20 starts.

                  National Treasure

The Washington Nationals have shown no signs of slowing down as they enter Thursday’s encounter with the visiting New York Mets. The Nationals are 9-1 in their last 10 games and sit at +945 units for the season, tops in the NL.

                  Pitching Notes

                  * Chicago lefty Chris Sale will look to bounce back as he leads the White Sox (+115, 7) into a Wednesday tilt with host Detroit. Sale was tagged for five runs in his last start after allowing just four combined runs in his previous four outings.

                  * Andrew Cashner will try to secure his spot as one of the top Under pitchers of the season Thursday as his San Diego Padres face off against host San Francisco. Cashner is 5-13 O/U for the season, including a 2-5 O/U mark on the road.

                  Hitting Notes

                  * Toronto outfielder Jose Bautista looks to remain hot as he prepares to lead the host Blue Jays (-111, 8.5) against Seattle on Wednesday. Bautista has 18 home runs and 49 RBIs in 219 at-bats since the All-Star break while posting a .995 OPS in that span.

                  * Baltimore slugger Nelson Cruz may struggle to add to his league-leading home-run total Thursday as he faces off against Yankees hurler Hiroki Kuroda. Cruz, who has 40 homers, is just 3-for-25 lifetime versus Kuroda and hasn’t taken him deep.

                  Totals Streak

Washington Nationals (1-8 O/U): No team has been hotter on the hill than the Nationals, who have surrendered two runs or fewer in eight of their last nine games. The recent Under surge has Washington sitting 75-68-13 O/U entering Wednesday’s action.

                  Prop of the Day

Bettors should consider taking a shot on the Los Angeles Angels to upend host Oakland by more than two runs (+450). The Angels have defeated the Athletics six times in their last seven encounters, including twice in their last three games in Oakland.

                  Injury Notes

                  * Minnesota first baseman Joe Mauer will likely miss Wednesday’s game against visiting Arizona (-158, 7.5) after taking a pitch in the elbow Tuesday. Mauer has missed 39 games this season; the Twins are 16-23 SU, 17-22 O/U and -287 units in those contests.

                  * Washington will give outfielder Denard Span the day off after he tore up his knee making a diving catch Tuesday against the Mets. The Nationals are 3-6 SU, 6-3 O/U and -355 units in nine games Span has missed so far in 2014.

                  Weather Watch

                  * Fans at Nationals Park should expect wind blowing in from center field at 13 mph for Wednesday’s game against New York. Teams combined to go 10-5 O/U in 15 games under similar conditions in 2013, hitting .282 while averaging better than nine runs.

                  Umpire Note of the Day

Under is 10-1-1 in umpire John Baker’s last 12 Wednesday games behind home plate. Baker will call the balls and strikes for the game between the host San Diego Padres (-126, 7) and the Colorado Rockies.
