    Armadillo: Tuesday's six-pack

-- Giants 5, Dodgers 2 (13)-- Six shutout innings for Giants' bullpen.

-- Pirates 1, Braves 0-- Rough night for Brewers; teams they're chasing both won.

-- A's won; Tigers/Mariners lost, Royals split a pair. Big night for Oakland.

-- Vikings have run ball 41 times for 113 yards in two games since the Peterson fiasco hit the fan; they ran ball for 186 yards with him in Week 1.

-- Did you know elephants can run from 18-25 miles an hour?

-- RIP former Titans kicker Rob Bironas, who died in a car accident at age 36. He was married to Terry Bradshaw's daughter.

    **********

Armadillo: Tuesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but.........

    13) If you’re a major league GM and you give BJ Upton $15M a year and you've traded for Dan Uggla and your team misses the playoffs while the new stadium is being built that you need to sell luxury boxes for, then you get fired.

Frank Wren got the boot in Atlanta Monday; deservedly so. The Upton brothers haven’t worked out well for the Braves; I’m not sure anyone other than Wren thought it would.

    12) Braves are 4-15 so far this month, but looks like Fredi Gonzalez gets to keep his job, despite his team scoring 41 runs in their last 21 games. Milwaukee is 9-22 in its last 31 games, another disappointing end to a season. Harder to put a finger on why the Brewers faded down the stretch, other than Carlos Gomez going on the DL for a while.

    11) Love watching NFL highlights on Sunday nights, see whatever I missed while flipping between games all day, but the NFL Network show has to be watched with a mute button, since Deion Sanders/Michael Irvin insist on talking over the show’s host while he is narrating highlights. It is not cool, it is not hip, it is just rude and unlistenable. Wait your turn to speak.

    10) Bengals, Cardinals are both 3-0 and hot; they probably wish their bye wasn’t until later on this season. Meanwhile, Cam Newton is really banged up and could use a week or two off, but Carolina’s bye isn’t until Week 12.

    9) 49ers have been outscored 52-3 in the second half this season; Kaepernick hasn’t improved his accuracy throwing the ball. Teams are trying to contain him and make him beat them with his arm. Would be weird if the Niners parted ways with Jim Harbaugh after this season, but you keep hearing it is a possibility.

    8) 49ers have given up the most first downs via penalty (17), followed by the Bills (13) and Pittsburgh (11).

    7) Arizona Cardinals have gotten 17 first downs via penalty, most in the NFL, followed by Chicago (13) and Dallas (11). Teams that take shots down the field are drawing valuable flags that gain big chunks of yardage.

    6) Speaking of the Cardinals, Bruce Arians is now 22-9 as an NFL head coach; he had to wait a long time to be an NFL head coach, until he was 60. Arians coached Temple for a while, but that was an impossible job. He’s doing a great job in the desert, and he was good as the interim coach in Indianapolis.

    5) NFL home favorites are 15-21-1 vs the spread thru three weeks this season.

    4) Surprised to see that Green Bay was the only NFL team this week that didn’t have at least one play of 19+ yards. Hard to believe, especially in a dome, against a team they had beaten 13 of last 15 times. Pack’s OL is struggling.

    3) As a fan, I’m tired of reading articles that sound like transcripts from Court TV. Tell me what happens on Sunday, tell me who is in and out for this week’s games. Then I’ll watch the games and enjoy them.

Politics/money are front/center here as far as advertisers and where they spend their money; we watch games to get away from that BS.

Media types resent the serious money that Roger Goodell makes as commissioner. Hey, this guy does the owners' bidding-- he works for them and isn't doing a lot on his own. He'll never, ever get fired, ever.

    2) Firing Goodell because Adrian Peterson is a child abuser makes no sense; is he in charge of our country’s culture now? I’ve been told by several people that beatings with a switch are fairly common in the southern culture. Maybe the media just needs a scapegoat then will calm down; if so, Goodell would be one of history’s highest-paid scapegoats.

    1) Clemson named true freshman Deshaun Watson the Tigers’ starting QB, after Watson came on in relief of senior Cole Stoudt and nearly beat (Jameis Winston-less) Florida State in Tallahassee, completing 19 of 28 passes for 266 yards, running for 30 yards and a touchdown. Stoudt is the son of former Steeler QB Cliff Stoudt.

NCAAF line watch: Grab Arkansas closer to kickoff

      Spread to bet now

Wake Forest Demon Deacons at Louisville Cardinals (-20.5)

Louisville was featured in this space last week, and the Cardinals warrant the ink again this week. Louisville waxed Florida International 34-3 last Saturday, so they return home with momentum. Louisville opened as 21-point favorites over Wake Forest, so lay the three touchdowns now before the line goes up.

Wake Forest is a team in transition. The Demon Deacons are in their first year under head coach Dave Clawson, and he’s installing his pass-heavy schemes. They’ve been competitive thus far, but they’ve played an extremely weak schedule. Louisville has too much offense, and with head coach Bobby Petrino’s knack for running up scores, bettors should play this game now in order to get the best of the number.

      Spread to wait on

Arkansas Razorbacks (+8.5) at Texas A&M Aggies

Texas A&M opened as 10-point home favorites, and the initial money has come in on Arkansas, driving the line down to the current price of 8.5 and 9 in some spots. However, when the recreational bettors get involved later this week, this line is likely to tick upward.

Arkansas is remembered for last year’s miserable 3-9 SU season, so public bettors are reluctant to back the Razorbacks. That will be true in this game against No. 7 Texas A&M who is known for their high-scoring offense. The Aggies have won their four games by a combined score of 221-47 this season, so the betting public will be all over the Aggies as a single digit favorite. Wait this game out, and take Arkansas closer to kick off.

      Total to watch

Northwestern Wildcats at Penn State Nittany Lions

Northwestern’s offense has disappointed thus far; the Wildcats have only scored 24, 15, and 24 points in their three games. They’ve played all three of their games at home, and the pressure to perform has been too much. In their first road game, we can expect a looser and more aggressive approach.

Penn State’s defense has been stout so far this season, but the Nittany Lions have played an awful slate of opposing offenses. Penn State’s offense finally broke out with 48 points last week versus Massachusetts after facing strong opposing defenses earlier this month. Northwestern’s defense is poor, so expect another good offensive game from Penn State. The seasonal numbers will skew the oddsmakers total on this game, so it might be set lower than it should be.

NFL line watch: Don't hesitate on fading aging Brady

        Spread to bet now

New England Patriots (-4) at Kansas City Chiefs

Angst is in no short supply in New England, where the offense looks worse than it has in more than a decade and there are rumors that at 37 years old, Tom Brady can no longer cover up whatever might be ailing the rest of the skill-position players.

When word starts to creep across the country about New England’s issues, the line could melt down to a field goal. Meanwhile, the Chiefs are fresh off a big victory over the Dolphins (who manhandled the Patriots only a few weeks ago) and look like they at last have a little life.

Alex Smith may not be the new Bart Starr, but he’s still better than any QB the Patriots have faced this season. Kansas City backers should grab the extra point ASAP before this becomes a field-goal line.

        Spread to bet later

Detroit Lions at New York Jets (Pick)

Early money is heavily on the Lions as bettors were no doubt influenced by Detroit’s victory over Green Bay Sunday. But hang on a bit.

The Lions are not the same team on grass as they are on turf, and while the Jets aren’t football Einsteins, Rex Ryan has some talent to work with.

If serious public money continues to flow in on the Lions, in a few days the Jets might even be getting a point or a point and a half before this one kicks off. If so, it would be an ideal situation for bettors who recognize that the Lions are two different teams – depending on where the game is played.

        Total to watch

Tennessee Titans at Indianapolis Colts (45.5)

Yes, games against the Jaguars still count. The Colts put 44 on the board down in Jacksonville Sunday and should be pedal to the metal again this week against the 1-2 Titans.

Tennessee has given up 59 points in its last two games after taking advantage of a Chiefs team that couldn’t get out of its own way on opening day. With the Titans no more than an average defensive team and the Colts lighting it up and playing at home, the 45.5 frankly looks like a gift for Over players.

Unders come through on the diamond Monday night

On a night where there was six shutouts in Major League Baseball action it's no surprise the under turned out to be a good bet.

The under went 6-3 in nine games on the diamond Monday night, good for a success rate of almost 67 percent.

The under has been a slightly better bet than the over this season hitting just over 51 percent of the time.

                      Indians cashing tickets as faves

The Cleveland Indians have been coming through for their backers when oddsmakers have pegged them as favorites lately, winning seven out of their last eight games against underdogs.

The Tribe is currently -107 faves for their matchup against the Kansas City Royals Tuesday. The total for the AL Central meeting presently sits at 6.5.

Yankees slumping with Reyburn calling pitches

New York Yankees' backers should proceed with caution with the Bronx Bombers hosting the Baltimore Orioles Tuesday evening. The Yanks are 0-4 in their last four ball games with umpire D.J. Reyburn calling balls and strikes.

Reyburn has called 27 games this year and the home team has a slight edge with a record of 14-13.

If the trend continues, it could be a solid payday for Orioles' backers as they are currently +130 road dogs. Ubaldo Jimenez gets the ball for the O's while Brandon McCarthy takes the mound for the home team.

Game of the Day: Royals at Indians
                        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Kansas City Royals at Cleveland Indians (-109, 7)

The Kansas City Royals are looking safe to secure at least a berth in the wild-card race, but are once again turning their sights to the American League Central crown. The Royals will try to keep the pressure on the Detroit Tigers when they visit the Cleveland Indians for the second of a three-game series on Tuesday. Kansas City is one game behind the Tigers in the Central while sitting two games up on the Seattle Mariners for the second AL wild card.

Cleveland is not ready to give up its own postseason dreams and is 3 1/2 games behind the Royals for that coveted second wild card. The Indians briefly got the deficit down to 2 1/2 when they closed out the completion of a suspended contest before Monday’s regularly-scheduled game but failed to take another bite out in a 2-0 loss in the nightcap. Cleveland is down to the final five contests of its regular season and has two more chances to cut into the Royals before closing out the campaign against the Tampa Bay Rays.

Reds' Cueto dominating Brewers at home

Cincinnati Reds starter Johnny Cueto has had another dominating season and it has never been more evident than when he takes the mound at home versus the Milwaukee Brewers.

The Reds are 8-0 in Cueto's last eight home starts against their rivals from the National League Central.

The Seattle Mariners aim to keep their playoff hops alive when they send their ace Felix Hernandez to the hill to take on a Blue Jays team looking to play spoiler, but bettors are thinking King Felix and the M's get the job done.

The moneyline for this game opened at Seattle -160 and bettors jumped all over that number, causing a move to the current number of -170, according to oddsmakers at TopBet.eu.

"We are seeing 77 percent of all moneyline wagers being placed on the Mariners and 78 percent of all spread wagers also being placed on Seattle -1.5(-105)," Brad Kennedy of TopBet.eu told Covers.

The majority of bettors are backing the game total to stay below seven, with 72 percent of wagers on the under.
