    Armadillo: Monday's six-pack

-- Six most popular picks in Westgate Super Contest were 5-1 this week, are 11-7 for the season thru three weeks.

-- Josh Donaldson hit a walk-off homer in the 10th inning to give the A's an 8-6 win. keeping them a half-game ahead of Kansas City in the Wild Card race- they are two games of Seattle, with seven games left. .

-- Cardinals clinched a playoff spot when Brewers lost 1-0 in Pittsburgh.

-- Bears repeating: Arizona Wildcats beat Cal 49-45 late Saturday night, scoring 36 points in the 4th quarter, 19 in last 3:40.

-- Rangers won 2-1 in Anaheim, their 8th win in nine games, as Tim Bogar makes his case to become the full-time manager in Texas.

-- Toronto's Marcus Stroman appealed his suspension so he could make a start in the Bronx, near his Long Island home, then dropped the appeal and will make his last start next weekend. Wish he was pitching against Seattle during the week.

    **********

Armadillo: Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports Sunday....

    13) Chargers 22, Bills 10-- Favorites are 8-7 vs spread so far this week, home teams 7-8, over 8-7. There were no turnovers in this game; 11 of 28 teams this week didn't turn the ball over, including both teams in Viking-Saint game.

    12) Cowboys 34, Rams 31-- St Louis doesn't know how to win, how to put teams away; they led this game 21-0 in second quarter.

Down at Florida State, Jimbo Fisher described his team this way Saturday night: "They know how to win." Jeff Fisher's team doesn't know how to win, and officials punish teams they perceive as losers.

Penalty yardage in this game: Dallas 15, St Louis 119. 'nuff said.

    11) Eagles 37, Redskins 34-- Philly is now first NFL team ever to start 3-0, after trailing by 10+ points in all three games. 65 TDs have been scored do far this week; 35 of them came on drives of 80+ yards. Reducing the influence of the kickoff has made scoring more difficult, creating fewer short fields.

    10) Giants 30, Texans 17-- Big Blue scored three TDs, two on 2-29 yard drives; +3 turnover ratio is a winning number, after being -6 in first two games. Giants ran ball for 193 yards, threw it for 223, very good balance- they won field position by 19 yards, a huge advantage.

    9) Saints 20, Vikings 9-- New Orleans had ball seven times, starting each drive 80+ yards from goal line; they had only two plays of 20+ yards. Total yardage: 396-247 in favor of Saints. Minnesota lost QB Cassel to toe injury. Rookie Bridgewater was 12-20 for 150 yards coming off the bench.

    8) Bengals 33, Titans 7-- Do a blind resume on all 32 teams, and Cincinnati is the best team right now- they've won field position by 11-9-12 yards in three games so far. Tennessee lost last two games by combined 59-17 after winning opener after winning opener in Kansas City.

    7) Ravens 23, Browns 21-- All three Cleveland games were decided in last 0:06, but they're 1-12 in last 13 games vs Ravens, who used to call Cleveland home. Funny that the Ravens' owner promised Ray Rice a job after football; that should go over real well in the NFL offices.

    6) Lions 19, Packers 7-- Green Bay has issues on offensive line; this is first time Lions have beaten Aaron Rodgers, and they did it with -2 turnover ratio. Lions hit on 11 of 18 third down plays-- their defense scored nine of the 19 points.

    5) Colts 44, Jaguars 17-- Jacksonville has cabanas with pools in the end zone boxes at their stadium; they also have a really bad team. Rookie QB Bortles was 14-24/223 in his first extended action-- he'll start for Jags in San Diego next week.

    4) Patriots 16, Raiders 9-- NE scored one TD in four red zone drives; they ran ball for only 97 yards, gained less than 300 for game- they're now 1-8 vs spread last nine times they were laying double digits. Raiders, Vikings were only two teams not to score an offensive TD; they both played rookie QB most of the way.

    3) Cardinals 23, 49ers 14-- Arizona is 3-0, despite playing backup QB in two of three games. 49ers have been outscored 52-3 in second half of games. Cardinals got seven first downs via penalty in this game, converted 8-13 on third down.

    2) Seahawks 26, Broncos 20 OT-- Manning rallied Denver back fron down 17-3 to force OT, but never saw field in OT, as Seattle drove 80 yards for winning TD. This was first time in last 32 games Broncos weren't favored to win. Denver ran ball for only 36 yards. Still amazing that Russell Wilson makes less than $700,000 a year.

    1) Chiefs 34, Dolphins 15-- Miami is now 11-30 vs spread in last 41 games as a home favorite; if I had one shot at being an NFL head coach, I'd want my franchise QB to at least know who the teams in the AFC East were. At the start of 2012, if you watched Hard Knocks, Tannehill had no idea, he didn't follow pro football. Oy.

    0) Steelers 37, Panthers 19-- Pitt averaged over eight yards a carry in this game, with Bell's 81-yard run their longest since Frenchy Fuqua in 1970. Steelers kicked Carolina's butt physically, plain and simple. Panthers don't have a bye until Week 12; Newton could use some time to heal up.

Logano wins at N.H. in second Chase race

LOUDON, N.H. -- Joey Logano took the lead from Kevin Harvick with 26 laps remaining in the Sylvania 300 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race at New Hampshire Motor Speedway on Sunday and held on through two late race restarts for the win.

"This is my home race track, the coolest place to win for me," Logano said. "I could never pick a better race track to win. I watched my first Cup race here when I was five and I won that other Cup race here, but I just felt like I had to win one the right way here, and this means so much."

With his victory -- his fourth of the season -- Logano joins Team Penske teammate Brad Keselowski as the two drivers guaranteed advancement to the next round of the Chase for the Sprint Cup by virtue of Chase race wins.

"I've got to thank all the boys at Team Penske. We're doing what we've got to do to win this thing right now -- both teams are -- and I'm proud of that," Logano said. "It feels good to go into the next one. We've got to keep doing what we're doing though. We've got to keep our eye on the prize and think about the big trophy at the end."

Four drivers will be eliminated after every third race and a win guarantees a driver an automatic berth into the next round. The first cutoff race is next week at Dover International Speedway.

Kyle Larson got by Harvick on a green-white-checker restart to take runner-up honors. Harvick finished third.

"It was a really good race for us. Our Target Chevy wasn't even a top-15 car the first 100 laps, and Shine (Chris Heroy, crew chief) and everybody on this Target team did a great job to get me in the game," Larson said. "They made some big changes there under the second or third caution, and it felt like a totally different race car.

"So hats off to my guys. Thanks to Chip (Ganassi, car owner), Felix (Sabates, car owner), Chevy, Target, everybody. I always get close when Chip is here, I just can't get a win it seems like. Maybe sometimes I'll get a win with Chip here."

After the yellow flag waved only twice in the first 170 laps of the 300-lap race, cautions came often the rest of the way, with 13 additional yellow flags waving in the remaining 130 laps. Several Chase drivers fell victim to the caution incidents, including Denny Hamlin, Keselowski, Jeff Gordon, Kyle Busch, Kurt Busch, Kasey Kahne and Matt Kenseth.

Keselowski started the race on the pole, and Hamlin got up to second at the green flag. Pit strategy mired Keselowski back in the field during a competition caution on lap 37 when he took four tires while the other front-runners took two.

Hamlin, meanwhile, restarted with the lead. But Hamlin's efforts went sour when he suffered a fuel pick-up issue and then later got caught up in a wreck on lap 181.

Harvick took his first lead on lap 71 and ran up front until he was beaten off pit road by Logano during a lap 171 caution. Logano maintained his lead through several cautions, while Keselowski worked his way back toward the front, despite a spin on lap 195.

Brian Vickers took the lead by staying out during a caution on lap 212, and Keselowski moved up to second on the restart that followed. Soon after a restart that followed on the lap 223 caution, Keselowski retook the lead for the first time since lap 37.

"We had a lot of adversity," Keselowski said. "I made a few mistakes that got us behind, but (crew chief) Paul Wolfe and the crew did a great job of getting us back in position. I was kind of an up-and-down day and I guess we ended on an OK note."

Harvick moved back to the front for the lead on a restart with just under 40 laps to go, but lost that lead to Logano on the restart that followed the 13th yellow flag of the race. In all, Harvick led a race-high 104 laps, while Keselowski and Logano each led more than 70.

"It was just a good day for us. We had a fast car," Harvick said. "Track position is tough and it wound up being really hard racing there and Brad moved me out of the way and I got up out of the groove. And then at the end there, NASCAR must not be able to see the lines on the restart there and the No. 22 (Logano) was way early all day. But all in all, we did what we had to do and I just enjoyed racing that hard."

Jamie McMurray finished fourth and Jimmie Johnson was fifth. Finishing sixth through 10th were Aric Almirola, Keselowski, Kyle Busch and Dale Earnhardt Jr.

      NOTES:
Brad Keselowski headed to New Hampshire with a chance to become the first Ford driver to win three straight Sprint Cup races since Rusty Wallace, former driver of the same No. 2 Penske Ford entry now driven by Keselowski, in 1994. ... Keselowski won the race at New Hampshire earlier this year. ... Matt Kenseth won last year's Sylvania 300. ... There were 13 different winners in the previous 13 races at NHMS prior to Sunday's Sylvania 300, a record tie with Texas Motor Speedway, but the streak ended with Logano. Keselowski's pole-winning lap of 27.090 seconds/140.598 mph on Friday was a track qualifying record at New Hampshire. ... Corey LaJoie, son of former NASCAR driver Randy LaJoie made his Sprint Cup debut on Sunday but spent time in the garage because of a mechanical issue and then spun late in the race.

NCAAF opening line report: Wolfpack a live dog with Seminoles in town

As the first month of the college football season closes, the games get a little bigger each week. And Week 5 gets off to an early start in the Pac-10 Conference, with No. 11 UCLA traveling to Tempe to meet 15th-ranked Arizona State.

The Bruins are off to a 3-0 SU start, but they’ve failed to cover in all three contests as heavy favorites – as 18-point road chalk at Virginia, 22-point home faves to Memphis, and laying 8.5 points two weeks ago against Texas, where they held on for a 20-17 victory.

The Sun Devils are also 3-0 SU (1-2 ATS) but haven’t faced a challenge, laying 45.5, 24 and 15.5 points respectively at home to Weber State and at New Mexico and Colorado.

UCLA quarterback Brett Hundley tweaked his left (non-throwing) elbow against Texas, and coach Jim Mora hasn’t yet disclosed Hundley’s status, so Bookmaker.eu lines manager John Lester said he hasn’t put up a line yet. But he likes ASU.

"The quarterback situation for UCLA is up in the air, which is why this is still off the board,” Lester said. “Arizona State will be playing its backup (Mike Bercovici), who has experience. This feels like a good spot for the Sun Devils.”

Florida State Seminoles (-23) at North Carolina State Wolfpack

The top-ranked Seminoles nearly suffered their first loss since 2012 on Saturday against visiting Clemson. Star-quarterback Jameis Winston sat out with a one-game suspension as his self-induced troubles mounted, and Florida State needed overtime to win 23-17 giving 9.5 points.

The ‘Noles are 3-0 SU but 0-3 ATS, while the Wolfpack are 4-0 SU and 2-2 ATS, but this will be N.C. State’s sternest test by far – its first four games were against Georgia Southern, Old Dominion, South Florida and last Saturday against Presbyterian.

"Well, we know the Seminoles will have their quarterback back, but Winston could be rusty or too eager to prove something,” Lester said. “There is also a bit of a letdown factor to consider after the emotional Clemson win. In my opinion, N.C. State is a live dog here.”

Missouri Tigers at South Carolina Gamecocks (-5.5)

Two teams that can ill-afford any more losses clash in an SEC contest.

Previously unbeaten Mizzou (3-1 SU, 2-2 ATS) suffered a stunning 31-27 home setback to Indiana as a 14-point favorite. No. 13 South Carolina (3-1 SU, 1-3 ATS), which got clubbed 52-28 by visiting Texas A&M in the season opener, has rebounded to win three straight, including an impressive 38-35 home win over Georgia as 6.5-point home underdogs.

However, the Gamecocks had to work to Saturday to beat Vanderbilt 34-24 as a 23-point road chalk.

"You have to worry about the mental state of this Mizzou squad after the shocking upset Saturday,” Lester said. “South Carolina got a wake-up call against Vandy, so they should be ready for this prime-time matchup.”

Notre Dame Fighting Irish (-12) at Syracuse Orange

The eighth-ranked Irish reached the BCS title game two years ago behind QB Everett Golson, then Golson was lost to academic suspension all of last year.

Now he’s back and looking to keep Notre Dame (3-0 SU, 2-1 ATS) unbeaten against the Orange (2-1 SU, 1-2 ATS).

"We’re expecting a lot of action on the under, so we will be careful when making that number,” Lester said. “The Orange offense looks a bit stagnant right now, and the Irish have had a full week off to prepare for it.”

Pirates starting series in fine form for backers

The Pittsburgh Pirates open a four-game series with the Atlanta Braves at Turner Field Monday and they've been a particularly solid wager in series openers of late.

The Bucs have won their previous five series openers heading into Monday evening's game with wins versus the Milwaukee Brewers, Boston Red Sox, Chicago Cubs (twice) and Philadelphia Phillies.

They'll send Francisco Liriano to the hill to face Aaron Harang as -142 road faves in Monday's series opener.

Contagious stomach ailment slows Cards' momentum

                Wash your hands.

It is a reminder that a parent might give his or her kid after playing outside. However, the placards printed in the St. Louis clubhouse are also a grim reminder of a stomach bug that is ripping through the Cardinals at a most inopportune time.

During St. Louis' 7-2 loss to the Cincinnati Reds on Sunday night, manager Mike Matheny estimated that "north of 10 players" were unavailable. The list included first baseman Matt Adams and third baseman Matt Carpenter, as well as several relief pitchers.

Matheny said it affected how he used his bullpen in the eighth inning, when he went with either struggling or little-used options. Left-hander Kevin Siegrist walked the first two hitters, and right-hander Sam Tuivailala, making his second big league appearance, yielded a game-clinching, three-run homer to Devin Mesoraco on his second pitch.

With six games left in the season, St. Louis leads the Pittsburgh Pirates by 2 1/2 games in the National League Central. However, that lead is no sure thing, given the Cardinals' poor health and the fact that St. Louis will leave players behind for the start of a season-ending road trip Monday night when they meet the Chicago Cubs in Wrigley Field.

The Cardinals clinched a playoff spot earlier Sunday when the Pirates beat the Milwaukee Brewers 1-0, but St. Louis wants to avoid the NL wild-card game.

"We've got to try to get everyone healthy as soon as possible," Cardinals infielder Daniel Descalso said. "I wish they weren't sick, but things happen. Hopefully, we can get this disease out of the clubhouse soon."

Braves' Minor shut down with balky shoulder

Mike Minor's season started late and ended early. A balky shoulder was the issue both times.

"It's very frustrating," the Atlanta Braves left-hander said. "But I guess on the positive side, it's hopefully nothing and I can get it taken care of this offseason and I won't go into spring training behind like I did this year."

Minor had to leave after one inning against the New York Mets on Saturday and the run he allowed dropped his record 6-12. His ERA is 4.77 over 25 starts and he has 120 strikeouts to 44 walks in 145 1/3 innings.

The 26-year-old former first-round draft pick bounced back late in August after being skipped a start, but was never the same pitcher who went 13-9 with a 3.21 ERA last year.

"Same thing," said Minor, when asked if the pain in his shoulder Saturday was similar to what he experienced in spring training. "... I feel like it's not anything serious but it's nagging pain that won't go away. It's there every pitch. The last couple starts I felt it a little bit more and more."

Minor said he knew something wasn't right in the bullpen before facing the Mets.

"I could tell in warmups," he said. "But I thought maybe it would get a little bit better as I threw my bullpen or even in the first inning and you get that extra adrenalin and it kind of goes away. Tonight it didn't. Every pitch I could feel something. When I came in, they pretty much said, That's it."

MLB Early-week betting cheat sheet: Happ a strong Under play
                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Here’s a comprehensive look at betting notes for the early-week major league games:

                    Padres Bucking Over Trend

The San Diego Padres (-113, O 7) continued their late-season Over trend Sunday with an 8-2 home drubbing of the San Francisco Giants. The Padres (59-91-5 O/U) still have the fewest Overs in the majors, but are a stunning 7-3 O/U in their last 10 games.

                    What’s Happ-ening?

Toronto Blue Jays left-hander J.A. Happ is one of the strongest Under plays of late heading into Monday’s showdown with the visiting Seattle Mariners (-115, 8). Happ has recorded six consecutive Unders and is 1-8-1 O/U in his last 10 starts.

                    Marlins Showing Brotherly Love

The Miami Marlins have enjoyed their visits from the Philadelphia Phillies this season as the National League East rivals do battle Tuesday night. Miami is 4-2 SU and 4-1-1 O/U in six home meetings with the Phillies so far in 2014.

                    Pitching Notes

                    * Bet against Adam Wainwright at your peril. The St. Louis Cardinals ace is 10-6 with a 1.82 ERA in 17 road starts going into Monday’s tilt with host Chicago (+171, 7); the Cubs did, however, torch him for six runs over five innings in a home win May 2.

                    * Miami right-hander Henderson Alvarez looks to secure a top-five spot in pitcher values this season as the Marlins tangle with the visiting Phillies on Tuesday. Alvarez ranks fourth among starters at $1,148, with Miami going 19-9 in his starts.

                    Hitting Notes

                    * A pair of Los Angeles Dodgers have caught fire at the right time. Matt Kemp is hitting .333 with three home runs and 10 RBIs over the past seven days, while first baseman Adrian Gonzalez is batting .333 with two homers and nine RBIs over the same span.

                    * All eyes will be on Chicago lefty Chris Sale and Detroit slugger Victor Martinez as the White Sox visit the Tigers. Martinez is hitting a scorching 15-for-28 lifetime versus Sale, with three home runs, six walks and eight RBIs.

                    Totals Streak

Minnesota Twins (7-1 O/U): The Twins are a strong bet to finish with the most Overs in the American League following their latest stretch in which they’ve surrendered four or more runs in eight of their last nine games. The Twins are 84-66-5 O/U for the year.

                    Prop of the Day

Bettors may want to consider taking the Seattle Mariners to defeat the Toronto Blue Jays by exactly one run (+550). Six of Happ’s last 10 starts have been decided by a run, with the Blue Jays going 2-4 in those games.

                    Injury Notes

                    * The Tampa Bay Rays have announced that outfielder Desmond Jennings will miss the remainder of the season with a left knee injury. Jennings hasn’t played since Aug. 28 - a stretch during which the Rays have gone 10-12 SU, 10-10-2 O/U and -511 units.

                    * Detroit Tigers catcher Alex Avila is expected to rejoin the club shortly as he makes his way back from a concussion. Avila has missed 17 games this season, with the Tigers going 11-6 SU, 9-8 O/U and +373 units in those contests.

                    Weather Watch

                    * Wind at Turner Field will blow in from center field at 7 mph for Monday’s tilt between the host Braves (+129, 6.5) and Pittsburgh. teams combined to hit .229 with 1.38 home runs in eight games under similar conditions in 2013 - well below stadium averages.

                      Pirates carrying perfect total record

As we enter the final days of the MLB regular season, the Pittsburgh Pirates are still a perfect 0-6 over/under when facing a sub 7.0 total. The Pirates have averaged just three runs per game when facing the low closing total.

Pittsburgh travels to Atlanta with the total currently set at 6.5.

NFL Opening Line Report: Undefeated Eagles underdogs in San Fran

As we hit Week 4 of the NFL season, the better matchups are in the NFC, starting with the undefeated Philadelphia Eagles traveling to face the suddenly underwhelming San Francisco 49ers.

The Eagles (3-0 SU, 2-1 ATS) have been the comeback kings, rallying from behind in all three victories, including Sunday’s 37-34 shootout home win over Washington. Philadelphia, which trailed 17-7 in the second quarter, failed to cash as 4-point chalk.

The Niners, meanwhile, have dumped two in a row after a strong win at Dallas to open the season, and Sunday’s loss was particularly stunning. San Francisco led 14-6 at halftime at Arizona, but didn’t score the rest of the way in a 23-14 loss as a 3-point favorite – with backup QB Drew Stanton pacing the Cardinals to the upset.

Despite that, Bookmaker.eu lines manager John Lester pegged the 49ers 4-point faves.

“The Eagles can’t afford another slow start here,” Lester tells Covers. “The Niners are desperate for a win at this point, especially in their new stadium. I wouldn’t be surprised if we get a lot Philly money from their backers and the public.”

New Orleans Saints (-2.5) at Dallas Cowboys

The Saints finally got off the deck after their 0-2 SU and ATS start, dropping Minnesota 20-9 for the win and cover as 10-point favorites Sunday. The Cowboys (2-1 SU and ATS) have won and covered two in a row, including posting the largest regulation comeback in team history Sunday, coming back from a 21-0 second-quarter hole to win 34-31 as 1.5-point favorites at St. Louis.

Lester has more interest in the total than the spread.

“These are two below-average defenses, so we shaded toward the Over and sent out 53,” he said. “We know that the Saints are a different team on the road, but the bettors believe in them, not the Cowboys. We opened with Dallas as a 2.5-point dog and quickly saw action on New Orleans.”

New England Patriots (-3.5) at Kansas City Chiefs

The Pats haven’t exactly been inspiring early on this season, and Sunday was no different. Laying 14 points against visiting Oakland, New England (2-1 SU, 1-2 ATS) scored an ugly 16-9 victory. The Chiefs (1-2 SU, 2-1 ATS), another playoff team from last season off to a sluggish start, got their first win Sunday, ripping host Miami 34-15 as 5.5-point underdogs.

Lester thinks New England will be better prepared at K.C., rising to the level of the opponent.

“We’ve seen the Pats sleepwalk through games where they are double-digit chalk, and I fully expect them to be more focused this week heading to Arrowhead, which is still a difficult place to play,” Lester, of Bookmaker.eu, said. “We released Chiefs +3.5, and the early money came in on New England.”

Green Bay Packers at Chicago Bears (N/A)

The Packers (1-2 SU) have yet to cover this season (0-2-1 ATS) and the push came in their lone victory, a Week 2 win at the New York Jets that required coming back from a 21-3 deficit. Green Bay managed just one score in a 19-7 loss at Detroit getting 1 point Sunday.

The Bears, meanwhile, stumbled out of the gate by losing to Buffalo at home, but made a big comeback of their own in Week 2, rallying past host San Francisco for a 28-20 win as 7-point pups.

It should be a typical NFC North slugfest, but with Chicago visiting the Jets in the Monday night game to wrap up Week 3, Lester hasn’t sent out a line yet.

“If there aren’t any major injuries for the Bears against New York, we will likely make them a small favorite with the home-field edge,” Lester said.

Early lines for this game popping up, have this spread around a pick’em.
