    Armadillo: Friday's six-pack

Some NFL with Week 3 upon us.........

-- Dolphins are 5-1-1 in last seven non-divisional home games.

-- Packers are 12-3-1 vs spread in last 16 games with Detroit.

-- New England is 1-6 in last seven games as double digit favorite.

-- Sehawks are 11-4 vs spread in game after their last 15 losses.

-- Carolina is 9-1-1 vs spread in last 11 home games.

-- 49ers covered eight of last ten games with Arizona.

    **********

Armadillo: Friday's List of 13: Things I'm looking for this weekend......

    13) Eagles rallied to win in second half in both of their first two games; now they face old friend DeSean Jackson and backup QB Cousins making his 4th NFL start, while Philly is on a short work week after winning in Indy Monday night. Weird that Philly hasn’t scored a first half TD in six of its last 12 games.

    12) I feel bad for Viking coach Mike Zimmer, who had to wait until age 58 to get this chance to be a head coach, then his best player gets suspended after one game. Vikings are walking into a hornet’s nest on Bourbon Street, with Saints off to dismal 0-2 start, despite scoring 55 points in two games.

    11) Cleveland Browns’ first two games were decided by a total of five points; they’re 1-11 in last 12 games against Baltimore (the old Browns). Hoyer is 4-1 as a starting QB with Cleveland. Ravens lost eight of their last ten road games.

    10) Michigan is only a 4.5-point favorite at home over Utah; Wolverines lose this game, and the Jim Harbaugh-to his-alma mater rumors are going to gain a lot of momentum.

    9) Packers were down 21-3 at home last week, after losing opener in Seattle, but they rallied to beat Jets. This week Green Bay visits a Lion team they’ve dominated in past. Detroit laid an egg in Charlotte last week; this is an important early season game between two best teams in NFC North.

    8) Florida was lucky (damn lucky) to beat Kentucky in OT last week; now they visit an Alabama team that hasn’t been challenged yet but is also unsettled at QB. Gators got whacked last two times they visited Tuscaloosa.

    7) Tigers-Royals is biggest baseball series this weekend, biggest series Kansas City has seen in years. Only 10 days left in baseball season; AL playoff picture is still unclear.

    6) Arizona Cardinals are atop NFC West at 2-0, despite playing their backup QB in Swamp last week; now 49ers come calling after they imploded in second half of their home opener. Niners have generally gotten the best of Redbirds, who lost RB Dwyer to an off-field incident this week.

    5) Broncos-Seahawks are only sixth Super Bowl rematch ever; Denver gets WR Welker back here, but Seattle has been a dominant home team. This is Broncos’ first road game this year.

    4) Why are Oklahoma/West Virginia in the same league? Andrew Luck’s dad is WV’s athletic director; he’s hurt their basketball program by giving them so many long road trips. Not sure its helped the football side either. Am guessing its helped their accountants, though, making sure they stayed in a top-5 league, unlike UConn or Cincinnati, which got left out.

    3) Steelers are playing second straight prime time road game; they didn’t look good in 26-6 loss at Baltimore, which is what happens when your offensive coordinator misses the team charter. Carolina has become a solid home team under Rivera; star DE Hardy won’t play here (off-field issues).

Seriously, Todd Haley missed the Steelers' charter to Baltimore.

    2) Jameis Winston is suspended for first half of Clemson-FSU game, so I guess Seminoles defer if they win the coin toss. Winston’s case is an interesting one, almost like a re-run of Johnny Manziel at A&M.

At some point, these schools are going to stop doing Heisman campaigns for kids, because when they win, the kid becomes bigger than life and becomes a handful to deal with. It would be surprising to see Winston in Tallahassee next year, as the (mostly small) incidents he is involved in pile up, even though he needs some more development to reach his potential as an NFL QB. One of those lose-lose situations.

    1) Rex Ryan’s Jets host Chicago Monday night, team that made his dad famous. Buddy Ryan was also an assistant coach for the Jets’ Super Bowl III champs. Bears lost at home to Buffalo, then won at San Francisco, so lot of fun trying to analyze how they will play.

Parity record ready to fall in New Hampshire

NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race results at New Hampshire Motor Speedway can be summed up with one word.

      Unpredictable.

Thirteen different drivers have taken the checkered flag in the last 13 NASCAR Sprint Cup races at the Magic Mile -- tied with Texas Motor Speedway for the all-time streak without a repeat winner.

And there's a better than average chance the Magic Mile takes sole possession of the record after this Sunday's Sylvania 300 (2 p.m. on ESPN) as Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup drivers Jeff Gordon, Kevin Harvick and Dale Earnhardt Jr. are all missing from the 13-in-13 stretch.

"The streak is a testimony to the competitive challenge our track presents to drivers. In addition to new winners, we're seeing record lead changes, more drivers than ever on the lead lap, and some great finishes," said Jerry Gappens, executive vice president and general manager of the track. "We've had part-time drivers, former champions, and first-time winners end up in Sunoco Victory Lane. We take a lot of pride in the fact that anyone can win and anything can happen here at New Hampshire Motor Speedway."

Gordon owns three victories at New Hampshire, but has not won there since 1998. He's on the cusp of his fourth win this season after posting runner-up finishes the last two races.

Despite his Granite State drought, Gordon boasts the highest average running position in the series at the 1.058-mile oval (7.7) where he has competed in all 39 of its NASCAR Sprint Cup series events -- tied with Jeff Burton for its all-time starts record.

"Loudon always seems to be a good track for us, although it didn't appear to be the case when the green (flag) waved the last time we were there," said Gordon of his 26th-place July New Hampshire finish. "The car was 'undriveable' at the start and we lost a lap early, but it was because one of the tires was slowly losing air. Once we got the (chassis) adjustments back in it, the car was really fast -- so that gives us some confidence as we head into this weekend."

It's been a while since Harvick has won at New Hampshire, too, the last time was Sept. 17, 2006. In his last two races at the track, he has finished 30th and 20th, respectively. Harvick can likely count on a solid starting position, at least. The Stewart-Haas Racing driver boasts a series-best six Coors Light Pole Awards this season and has started lower than sixth once in his last eight races, coincidentally at the Magic Mile.

"(New Hampshire is) a track where you have to have a good-handling car, you have to have track position and you have to have everything going right," Harvick said. "If you get yourself stuck in the middle of the pack you're not going to have a very good day unless you have a really good car."

After posting three wins, his highest total since he racked up six in 2004, Earnhardt will try to automatically advance to the Chase's Contender Round with a New Hampshire checkered flag. He has the most starts without a win at Loudon, but has seven top fives to his credit there. Since Earnhardt's emphatic win at Pocono, he has posted one top-10 finish in the last six races, a fifth-place showing at Michigan.

"I love New Hampshire because it's short, and you blink an eye, 300 laps is gone," said Steve Letarte, Earnhardt's crew chief. "You have to have your pit strategy right. You have to be aggressive. That's kind of Dale's and my signature, being aggressive with the pit strategy. He's committed to driving those unique pit strategies and I think that's what allows us to consistently finish well at New Hampshire."

Familiar faces Hornish and McDowell return to action with owner points title implications

Seven races remain on the NASCAR Nationwide Series schedule and the owner points championship looks to be a two-horse race as the season unwinds.

Currently, the No. 22 Team Penske Ford occupies the top of the standings with a 15-point lead over the No. 54 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota. With their typical drivers focused on the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup in New Hampshire or points titles in other NASCAR series, each car has an open seat for Saturday's VisitMyrtleBeach.com 300 at Kentucky Speedway (7:30 p.m.).

Sam Hornish Jr. will take the reins of the No. 54 JGR car, primarily driven by Kyle Busch, while NNS veteran Michael McDowell will make his Team Penske season debut in the No. 22.

Back in action for his first race since Mid-Ohio on Aug. 16, Hornish claims one win (Iowa Speedway), four top fives and two poles in seven starts this season. He has never won in his four starts at Kentucky, but has experienced success there with one Coors Light Pole Award, two top fives (including a runner-up showing) and an average finish of 5.2.

McDowell, often the driver of the No. 95 Leavine Family Racing Ford Fusion in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, has made two Nationwide appearances this season, both in the No. 20 JGR Toyota. Both races were at Iowa, and in another twist, he tied his career-best with a runner-up finish behind No. 22 Team Penske driver Brad Keselowski in last month's U.S. Cellular 250 presented by New Holland.

Playing to McDowell's favor, the No. 22 swept Kentucky last year and finished second in the series' first visit to the 1.5-mile tri-oval this season.

"Driving for Roger Penske is something I have dreamed about since I was a kid racing Go-Karts," McDowell said. "I have lived in Charlotte for 10 years and I haven't changed my phone number during that time. When people ask why, my joke is; when Roger Penske dials my number, I want to make sure he has the same number I gave Walter Czarnecki 14 years ago.

"I told him I wanted to drive for Team Penske someday and I stayed in contact with him as I climbed up the open wheel ladder. It turned out to be a good thing I never changed my number."

      Crafton cruising toward championship repeat

Matt Crafton found himself back in familiar territory following his second-place finish at Chicagoland Speedway on Saturday night. The 2013 NASCAR Camping World Truck Series champion reclaimed the top spot in the standings where he holds a five-point lead over ThorSport teammate Johnny Sauter.

He can further distance himself from the field with a strong showing in Saturday's UNOH 175 at New Hampshire Motor Speedway (1 p.m.) where the NCWTS returns after a two-year hiatus. With so many young drivers on the circuit, the 38 year old has the advantage of having 11 previous starts on the 1.058-mile oval and boasts two top-five and six top-10 finishes there.

"The [shorter] tracks are what I grew up on so I'm looking forward to the Truck Series getting back to Loudon," Crafton said. "It's been [three] years since the trucks have raced there, but I've had some good runs there in the past; we even got our first pole there in 2005."

If he can stay out front, Crafton will become the first back-to-back champion and the fourth multititle winner since the series began in 1995. At the moment, Crafton doesn't even have the points race on his mind, claiming he is only focused on winning events until the final race at Homestead.

"Homestead is going to be when we are going to worry about (the points race)," Crafton said. "We are going to go to each and every race trying to win, each and every darn race."

Hitters' wind at Wrigley Field Friday

According to weather forecasts, wind will blow out to left field around 13 mph at Wrigley Field as the Chicago Cubs host the Los Angeles Dodgers Friday afternoon.

The Cubs are 2-1 straight up and average 6.33 runs per game when the wind blow out to left in the Windy City.

It'll take more than some wind to boost the Cubs' chances as they must face Clayton Kershaw Friday. Oddsmakers have the Cubbies as +267 home dogs for the game.

                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
MLB Weekend betting cheat sheet: Hughes cashing for Under bettors
                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Here's a comprehensive look at betting notes for the weekend's major-league games:

                Rockies Riding High

The Coors Field factor is in full effect this week, with the Rockies posting their fourth Over in as many home games Thursday with a 7-6 triumph (-120, O 10) over the Arizona Diamondbacks. The victory moves Colorado to 41-32-5 O/U at Coors Field with three home games remaining, and 74-67-12 O/U for the season.

                This Could Get Messy

One of the biggest mismatches of the season goes Friday afternoon as the Los Angeles Dodgers (-285) square off against the host Chicago Cubs. The Dodgers send Cy Young and National League MVP candidate Clayton Kershaw (19-3, 1.70 ERA) to the hill against Cubs journeyman Edwin Jackson (6-14, 6.09).

                Potential Mismatch

The Los Angeles Angels will likely be big favorites Saturday night as they welcome the Texas Rangers to Angels Stadium of Anaheim. The Angels enter the weekend with the best home record in the American League, while the Rangers are 32-46 away from Texas and have won just three of 16 meetings with Los Angeles this season.

                Tanaka Time

The New York Yankees will have electrifying rookie Masahiro Tanaka back on the mound Sunday as they host the Toronto Blue Jays. Tanaka, who has been on the disabled list since early July with a partially torn UCL in his right elbow, will look to finish the season on a high note after going 12-4 with a 2.51 ERA and $465 in value through 18 starts.

                Pitching Notes

                * Minnesota right-hander Phil Hughes looks to remain a strong Under play Friday night as he leads the Twins (-128, 7.5) against the visiting Cleveland Indians. Hughes is 2-9 O/U in his last 11 starts and remains one of the top value pitchers in the majors, ranked seventh overall at $1,001.

                * Bettors should keep a close eye on right-hander Max Scherzer's workload Saturday as the Detroit Tigers ace squares off against the host Kansas City Royals. Scherer (16-5, 3.26 ERA) has thrown at least 110 pitches in seven of his previous nine starts, going 7-2 SU and 4-5 O/U over that span.

                * It has been a rough 3 1/2 weeks for Seattle right-hander Hisashi Iwakuma, who takes the hill Sunday as the Mariners visit the Houston Astros. Iwakuma (14-8, 3.42 ERA) was tagged for seven runs over 3 1/3 innings last time out and has allowed 22 runs over his previous five starts, going 2-3 SU and 4-0-1 O/U over that span.

                Hitting Notes

                * Colorado catcher Wilin Rosario has benefited greatly from the Rockies' recent home success. Rosario is 9-for-13 with two home runs and seven RBIs over the past three games, after recording just one home run and six RBIs over his previous 18 contests - a stretch during which Colorado went 6-12.

                * There's something about Baltimore Orioles pitcher Chris Tillman that brings out the worst in Boston Red Sox slugger David Ortiz. Tillman has limited to Ortiz to just a pair of hits - both singles - in 24 career at-bats, striking him out six times as the two prepare to face off Saturday night at Camden Yards.

                * St. Louis Cardinals hurler Lance Lynn may have his hands full Sunday night as he prepares to face Jay Bruce and the Cincinnati Reds. Bruce has struggled for the majority of the season but is batting a red-hot .480 (12-for-25) with a double, two triples, two home runs and eight RBIs in his career versus Lynn.

                Totals Streak

New York Yankees (1-7 O/U): The Yankees head into the twilight of the regular season with a meager offensive attack that has failed to produce more than three runs in any of its last eight games. The recent Under streak has New York at 61-87-4 on the season - the second-fewest Overs in the American League.

                Prop of the Day

Bettors should consider using Mark Buehrle's history against him and taking the New York Yankees -2.5 against the Toronto Blue Jays (+260). Buehrle is 1-13 with a 6.14 ERA in 20 career starts versus the Yankees, including an 0-6, 6.04 mark in eight outings at Yankee Stadium.

                Injury Notes

                * Los Angeles Angels outfielder Josh Hamilton is dealing with tightness and soreness in his right shoulder and is considered day-to-day. The Angels are 39-22 SU, 32-27-2 O/U and +1,421 units in Hamilton's absence so far this season.

                * A bout of pneumonia may sideline Colorado Rockies third baseman Nolan Arenado for the remainder of the season. Arenado has missed 40 games so far in 2014, with Colorado going just 13-27 SU, 24-12-4 O/U and -1,223 units with him out of the lineup.

                Weather Watch

                * Wind at Wrigley Field will blow out to left-center field at 13 mph Friday for the game between the Cubs and the heavily favored Dodgers. Teams combined for better than three home runs per game under similar conditions in 2013 - well above stadium averages.

                * Fans at Target Field in Minnesota will be greeted by wind blowing out to right field at 12 mph for Saturday's showdown between the Twins and the visiting Indians. Teams averaged just .245 in 14 games with the wind blowing out to right in 2013.

                Umpire Note of the Day

Over is 16-6-4 in umpire Laz Diaz' last 26 games behind home plate. Diaz will be calling the balls and strikes Friday evening when the New York Yankees (-140, 7.5) entertain the Toronto Blue Jays.

                    Thunderstorms could target Indians-Twins game

According to weather forecasts, there is a 60 percent chance of scattered thunderstorms falling on Target Field as the Minnesota Twins host the Cleveland Indians Friday evening.

Conditions should be okay by first pitch, but as the game progresses, weather will get only worse as a 10 percent probability of rain prior to first pitch increases to 60 by the middle-to-late innings.

Oddsmakers currently have the Twinkies as -127 home faves with Phil Hughes on the mound Friday. The total is currently 7.5.
