    Armadillo: Wednesday's six-pack

-- Orioles, Nationals clinched division titles; Baltimore's last division title was in 1997, so congrats to them. Buck Showalter is an excellent manager.

-- Tennessee Volunteers have played 22 true freshman this year, most in country.

-- Cuban OF Rusney Castillo will finish the season with the Red Sox; he signed a 7-year, $72M deal with Boston last month.

-- NL Wild Card update: Giants-Pirates-Brewers all won; Milwaukee trails Pirates by 1.5 games for the second Wild Card.

-- AL Wild Card update: Tigers-Royals-A's all lost, excellent night for Seattle.

-- Texas Longhorns kicked off to start both halves vs UCLA last week, because their captains screwed up what they were supposed to say. Refs even tried to tell them they were making a mistake. Not good.

    **********

Armadillo: Wednesday's List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud.......

    13) ESPN’s research guys came up with a great fact before the Monday night game, on how Andrew Luck had never lost consecutive NFL games; the last time he lost consecutive college games, the team that beat him was Arizona, whose QB that night was Nick Foles, who beat him again Monday.

    12) Chiefs look like they’ll be down seven out of 22 starters due to suspension or injury for this week’s game at Miami.

    11) This is Rob Ryan’s 11th year as a defensive coordinator; combined record of those teams is 57-105 with one winning season (last year with Saints). If his last name isn’t Ryan, he’s a defensive line coach in Conference USA somewhere.

    10) Teams that won by 15+ points in Week 1 were 1-4 in Week 2 and the team that won (Eagles) was down 20-6 in third quarter.

    9) In Week 1, there were 72 first downs via penalty in 16 games (4.5 per game); last week, there were 77 FDs via penalty (4.81/game).

Out of those 149 first downs via penalty, Buffalo didn’t get one first down via penalty and they won both their games.

    8) 10 of 45 first downs in Cardinal-Giant game came via penalty, or 22%. That’s a lot. NFL honchos have to remember that no one pays to watch the officials work.

    7) There were 129 plays of 20+ yards in Week 1 (4.03 per team); this week, there were 108 (3.38). Miami was the only team not to have at least one play of 20+ yards last week.

    6) I’m convinced red zone efficiency gets better as teams practice more during the season; in Week 1, teams scored an average of 4.93 points/red zone drive. In week 2, that number was down to 4.85. We’ll see how it progresses during the season.

    5) In Week 1, teams scored 1.47 points per drive that started 80+ yards from end zone; last week, the figure dipped a little, to 1.43 ppd. Saints/Packers/Bengals are scored 17 points on those long drives.

    4) Last week, there were 75 offensive TDs scored; this week, 68. 40 of those 143 TDs came on drives of exactly 80 yards; 23 more came on drives longer than 80 drives, so on 44.1% of TD drives, teams had to drive 80+ yards, not an easy thing.

21 touchdowns came on drives shorter than 50 yards; in Week 2, teams that scored a TD on a drive of less than 50 yards were 8-2-- Jets lost and Bears/49ers both had one Sunday night.

    3) 3rd down conversions in Week 1 were made on 42.2% of plays; in Week 2, 39.1%. Sometimes just getting a first down deep in your territory is a big play, to let your defense rest or to flip field position a little.

    2) Favorites were 8-8 vs spread this week, are 13-18-1 for season; home teams were 7-9 (13-18-1). Under was 10-6 this week, is 21-11 for the young season.

    1) Don Mattingly compared his Dodgers to the ’72-‘74 A’s Monday night; Matt Kemp and Yasiel Puig got into it in the dugout, over Puig making a mistake running the bases, which cost Kemp an easy RBI chance. This happened while LA was scoring eight runs in the sixth inning in Denver. Those old A’s teams, their drama was most always before/after the game, not during it.

NCAAF Week 4 line watch: Patience on Cal-Arizona spread

      Spread to bet now

Louisville Cardinals (-26.5) at Florida International Golden Panthers

Louisville is currently a 26.5-point favorite over Florida International, and the Cardinals will likely close as 4-TD favorites. Louisville is coming off a loss, and knowing head coach Bobby Petrino’s knack for running up scores, bettors will play this game early in order to get the best of the number.

Florida International is a bad football team. The Panthers were up 16-0 on Pittsburgh in the first quarter as 24.5-point home underdogs on Saturday, and they were subsequently out-scored 42-9 over the last three quarters. Louisville’s offense is more explosive than Pittsburgh’s, so bet this game now before the line goes up.

      Spread to wait on

California Golden Bears (+10) at Arizona Wildcats

Arizona is currently a 10-point home favorite over California as the early sharp money pushed the opening number down. However, the public will likely push this line back up higher by this weekend once the recreational money gets involved. Arizona is known as a high-scoring team, and recreational bettors like taking teams like the Wildcats in games lined at less than two touchdowns.

California was awful last season, but the team looks improved, and they come into this game with a 2-0 record. The public remembers how bad California was last season and this will bring bets in against the Golden Bears. California only lost 33-28 to Arizona last season, so wait this out and take more than 10 points with the road underdog.

      Total to watch

Florida Gators at Alabama Crimson Tide

On the surface, this game between Florida and Alabama looks like a classic SEC defensive struggle. Florida and Alabama have reputations of winning with defense, and if that thinking is in place, the oddsmakers may set this total too low.

The Gators have an improved offense this season; they’ve scored 101 points in their first two games. The Crimson Tide has scored 126 points in their three games thus far. Alabama is also playing with a vulnerable defense because of youth and injuries; they have just one takeaway this season. Keep an eye on the opening total as it may come out too low based on last year's results.

Rays a solid play with low total

The Tampa Bay Rays have been a good play for bettors this season when facing a low total. When facing a sub 7.0 total, the Rays have an over/under record of 6-3.

The Rays host the Yankees with the total currently set at 6.5.

High total not a good sign for Rockies

When it comes to totals, we are all accustomed to seeing the double-digits saved for Colorado, but the Rockies have not fared well with large totals. This season, when the Rockies are playing with a total of 11-11.5 they have a 2-6 record straight-up.

The Rockies host the Los Angeles Dodgers With a total currently set at 11.0 Wednesday.

MLB Mid-week betting cheat sheet: Price stumbles as big road fave
                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Here's a comprehensive look at betting notes for the mid-week major league games:

                Texas-Sized Upset

The Texas Rangers pulled off one of the most unlikely victories of the season Tuesday, prevailing 6-3 over the host Oakland Athletics despite being a whopping +217 underdog. The Rangers have been a 'dog of +200 greater twice this season, and won both times.

                Is the Price Right?

Detroit left-hander David Price will look to reverse a disturbing road trend Wednesday as he leads the Tigers (-179, 7.5) against the host Minnesota Twins. Price is just 1-3 straight up as a road favorite of -150 or greater, though he's 2-0 against Minnesota so far this season.

                Blue Jays' Bronx Beating

The Toronto Blue Jays have struggled mightily at Yankee Stadium heading into Thursday's opener of a four-game set in New York. The Blue Jays are a stunning 7-30 over their previous 37 games at the hallowed ballpark, though they took two of three there earlier in the season.

                Pitching Notes

                * Chicago lefty Chris Sale looks to strengthen his Cy Young candidacy Wednesday as he guides the visiting White Sox (102, 6.5) against the Kansas City Royals. Sale is 4-2 with a 1.85 ERA since the All-Star break, with the White Sox going 6-4 SU and 4-6 O/U during that span.

                * Oakland right-hander Sonny Gray seeks to build off back-to-back solid starts Thursday as the Athletics host the Texas Rangers. Gray has allowed four earned runs on nine hits over his previous 15 innings; the Athletics are 2-7 SU in his last nine outings overall.

                Hitting Notes

                * The Detroit Tigers have been mashing this month as they prepare to square off against the Twins. Miguel Cabrera and J.D. Martinez are tied for the major-league lead with six September home runs, while Victor Martinez is close behind with four.

                * Milwaukee right-hander Kyle Lohse will try to be extra careful with St. Louis catcher Yadier Molina when the Brewers visit the Cardinals on Thursday. Molina is a red-hot 11-for-20 in his career versus Lohse, with three home runs, eight RBIs and just one strikeout.

                Totals Streak

Los Angeles Dodgers (8-1-1 O/U): It has been an unusual stretch for the Dodgers, who have been the league's strongest Over option in the past 10 games despite playing in three shutouts over that span. Los Angeles is 74-69-8 O/U for the year.

                Prop of the Day

Bettors should consider shrinking the total in the White Sox-Royals tilt to Under 5 (+200). Sale is 3-0 with a 1.41 ERA in nine road starts in 2014, while Royals counterpart Yordano Ventura has been one of the strongest home Under plays of the year at 5-11 O/U.

                Injury Notes

                * The Texas Rangers aren't sure when outfielder Alex Rios will return from a thumb injury that has sidelined him since September 4. The Rangers haven't fared badly in his absence, going 5-4 SU, 4-5 O/U and +340 units entering Wednesday.

                * Los Angeles Dodgers shortstop Hanley Ramirez isn't expected to play Wednesday as he continues to deal with a nagging elbow injury. Ramirez has already missed 30 games this season; the Dodgers are 18-12 SU, 11-19 O/U and +456 units over that span.

                Weather Watch

                * Fans at Citi Field will experience winds blowing out to center field at 5 mph for Wednesday's game between the host Mets (-117, 6.5) and the Marlins. Teams combined to score nearly 12 runs in five games with the wind blowing out to center field last season.

                Umpire Note of the Day

Over is 14-3-1 in umpire Joe West's last 18 games calling balls and strikes involving the Yankees. West will be behind home plate Wednesday when New York (+127, 6.5) visits the Tampa Bay Rays.

Hey Udog---That was a Texas-- sized upset last night for sure. Kazmir is just completely out of gas--I've been complaining all year that Tribe brass didn't resign him, but pretty glad we don't have him now. Old Billy Beane has taken a World Series caliber team and completely wrecked it. I'll have some bucks on a Texas repeat tonight--Oak is toast.

Game of the Day: Brewers at Cardinals
                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Milwaukee Brewers at St. Louis Cardinals (-144, 6.5)

Adam Wainwright may not have pitched up to his usual standards this season, but he can join Clayton Kershaw as the only 19-game winners in the majors when he and the St. Louis Cardinals face the visiting Milwaukee Brewers on Wednesday in the second contest of their three-game set. The Cardinals will be looking for their ace to play the role of stopper after blowing a ninth-inning lead in Tuesday's series opener. St. Louis leads Pittsburgh by 2 1/2 games and Milwaukee by four in the National League Central.

The Brewers may have saved their season by squeezing out a 3-2 win Tuesday, getting a tying sacrifice fly from Matt Clark in the ninth inning before Hector Gomez delivered the go-ahead bloop single in the 12th. "You know something? We deserved a bloop," Milwaukee manager Ron Roenicke said. "They (the Cardinals) get bloops to hurt us all the time." It was the fifth win in six games for the Brewers and got their rugged nine-game road trip off to a successful start.

                    TV:
8:15 p.m. ET, ESPN, FSN Wisconsin (Milwaukee), FSN Midwest (St. Louis)

                    LINE HISTORY:
Pinnacle Sports opened the Cardinals as -145 home faves and they were bet as high as -155 before settling back down to -144. The run total is sitting at 6.5.

                    INJURY REPORT:
                    Brewers: N/A Cardinals: 1B Matt Adams (Ques-Oblique)

                    POWER RANKINGS:
                    Brewers (-152), Cardinals (-190)

                    WEATHER REPORT:
There is a risk of thundershowers before the first pitch, but by game time the weather should be overcast with a slight wind blowing towards left field.

                    PITCHING MATCHUP:
Brewers RH Mike Fiers (6-2, 1.84 ERA) vs. Cardinals RH Adam Wainwright (18-9, 2.56)

One of the few bright spots during Milwaukee's slide has been the performance of Fiers, who is 6-1 with a sparkling 1.74 ERA in seven starts since being recalled from the minors. Fiers wound up pitching five scoreless innings for the win versus the Marlins after yielding two runs over 6 2/3 frames to beat St. Louis in his previous outing. Fiers is 2-0 with a 1.31 ERA in five career appearances (three starts) against the Cardinals.

Wainwright labored throughout August, going 2-4 in six turns and allowed fewer than three runs only once, but he has rebounded to win three straight starts. He earned the victory despite surrendering three homers against Pittsburgh on Sept. 2 and has followed that up with a pair of stellar performances, yielding two runs over 17 innings. He must be wary of Aramis Ramirez, who is batting .411 with three homers in 56 at-bats against him.

                    TRENDS:

*Brewers are 6-1 in Fiers' last 7 starts.
*Over is 13-5 in Wainwrights last 18 starts as a home favorite of -110 to -150.
*Cardinals are 5-1 in Wainwrights last 6 starts vs. Brewers.

                    CONSENSUS:
Just over 64 percent of wagers are on the Cardinals at -144.
