    Armadillo: Monday's six-pack

-- Six most popular picks in the Westgate Super Handicapping Contest went 4-2 this week, are now 6-6 for the season.

-- If you know golfer Billy Horschel, its a good day to ask him for a loan; he won $11.4M as the PGA Tour playoffs came to an end.

-- USA 129, Serbia 92-- They covered by 17 points, Not a great event; well, it would've been without the American team.

-- When Bruce Bochy brought his son in to pitch Saturday night, it was the first time that had ever happened in the major leagues, a father bringing in his son. .

-- Golfer Greg Norman had an accident with a chainsaw, damn near cut his left hand off. The lesson as always: "Pay other people to do work."

-- If the baseball playoffs started today, they would look like this:
    NL-- Washington-St Louis-Dodgers; Wild Card-- Giants-Pirates
    AL-- Baltimore-Detroit-Angels; Wild Card-- A's-Royals

    **********

Armadillo: Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports Sunday......

    13) Panthers 24, Lions 7-- Carolina is 2-0 for first time in six years; tough for team to travel off a Monday night game-- Lions were -3 in turnovers. So far this season, teams that are -2 or worse in turnovers are 2-16.

    12) Bills 29, Dolphins 10-- Buffalo had one TD, four FGs in six red zone drives, but no one is taking about that-- you knew it was a bad day for Miami when they gave up a 102-yard kick return for a TD after their first score, in the third quarter.

    11) Redskins 41, Jaguars 10-- Robert Griffin III dislocated his ankle, is gone for couple months; Kirk Cousins did just fine replacing him. Funny how Daniel Snyder was quick to defend Roger Goodell, throwing "Redskins" into his statement, As for Jacksonville, looks like another long year, but they do have nice uniforms. .

    10) Cowboys 26, Titans 10-- 220 rushing yards for Dallas- they had 76-49 edge in plays run, converting 9-13 on third down. Tennessee only ran ball 13 times out of 49 plays, after running it 38 of 75 plays last week. Dallas is now 14-8 vs spread in its last 22 games as a road underdog.

    9) Cardinals 25, Giants 14-- Big Blue is minus-6 in turnovers after two games, in which they were -14 in field position in both games-- they also allowed a TD on a punt return. Drew Stanton gets win as backup QB; Arizona is off to a 2-0 start.

    8) Patriots 30, Vikings 7-- Pats are now 26-9 vs spread in game follwoing a loss, as Vikings' run game was impotent without Peterson. NE blocked FG for a TD, also had a 1-yard TD drive, after one of their four INTs- they also had 15 penalties for 163 yards. Rough day for former Patriot Matt Cassel.

    7) Browns 26, Saints 24-- Cleveland had 4th-and-7 on last drive and Saints didn't blitz; why? Saints scored 55 points in first two games, and are 0-2; why exactly does Rob Ryan keep getting jobs? Pick-6 that Brees threw in 2nd quarter that put Browns up 16-3 was only defensive TD of day, league-wide.

    6) Bengals 24, Falcons 10-- Cincy gained 472 yards, were +3 in turnovers, but lost AJ Green to a toe injury. Bengals averaged 12.6 yards per pass attempt, after last week, when they only scored one TD. Atlanta also allowed 472 yards last week.

    5) Rams 19, Buccaneers 17-- St Louis ended 0-12 skid in road openers, winning in backup QB Davis' 1st NFL start. Bucs start 0-2 at home; both opponents played a backup QB. Zeurlein kicked four FGs, including game-winner with 0:38 left.

    4) Chargers 30, Seahawks 21-- 7 catches, 96 yards, 3 TDs for TE Gates, as San Diego hung 30 on a Seattle team that is still way better at home than on foreign soil. Adrian Peterson got paid $705,882 this week; that's $43,448 more than Seahawks are paying Russell Wilson all season.

    3) Texans 30, Raiders 14-- Oakland is -6 in turnovers, but at least the A's won two of three in Seattle this weekend. Texans had 24-yard edge in field position; James Jones fumbled twice on one play- you don't see that too often. Last week there were 75 offensive TDs in 16 games; this week so far, 62 in 15 games.

    2) Broncos 24, Chiefs 17-- Manning misses Wes Welker, a lot. In their two games, Denver has gained 148 yards on 41 second half plays, with one TD, one FG. First half numbers: 72 plays, 536 yards, with six TDs, one FG- thats a big difference, but they're 2-0 as they head out on road next week.

    1) Packers 31, Jets 24-- Jets led 21-3 midway thru second quarter, but Nelson had nine catches for 209 yards-- his 16 targets were most Rodgers has ever targeted one receiver in a game. Both teams made a 50+-yard FG, you don't see that a lot. Jets have to be little bit encouraged with how QB Smith played.

    0) Bears 28, 49ers 20-- Niners led 17-0 in their new stadium, but then imploded in second half; Chicago had four consecutive TD drives, gaining 205 yards on 25 plays. NFL teams that turn ball over four times rarely win.

There were 26 penalties in this game, for 176 yards-- its almost like someone who hates football now makes the rules, so everyone else will stop liking it. No one goes to games to watch flags being thrown-- lets the guys play- thats a better game.

NCAAF opening line report: Rested Seminoles big home faves versus Clemson

Florida State hasn’t lost since Week 13 of the 2012 season, when the Seminoles tumbled to in-state rival Florida 37-26 as a 7-point home favorite.

Since then, Jimbo Fisher’s troops have peeled off 18-straight victories, including last year’s national championship game.

But they haven’t been awe-inspiring so far this season. The ‘Noles barely held off Oklahoma State 37-31 as a hefty 18-point neutral-site fave in Week 1, then beat the Citadel 37-12 while laying a whopping 58.5 points at home in Week 2.

Now, top-ranked Florida State hosts No. 22 Clemson, as a 19-point favorite, with both teams rested and the Tigers (1-1 SU and ATS) surely still smarting from a 51-14 home shellacking last year at the hands of the Seminoles.

But John Lester, lines manager at bookmaker.eu, leans toward Florida State.

“It’s a matchup where both teams are coming off byes, which both needed in order to mend wounds,” Lester said. “We all remember the dismantling of Clemson by FSU last year, and this one is at Tallahassee. There are some concerns with the ‘Noles defense, particularly the health of the front seven, but I don’t see the Tigers being able to keep enough points off the board.”

Auburn Tigers (-8.5) at Kansas State Wildcats

It’s a Thursday night contest featuring two ranked teams in No. 5 Auburn (2-0 SU and ATS) and No. 20 Kansas State (2-0 SU, 0-2 ATS), and Lester said there’s some value in the home underdog.

“It’s a couple of teams coming off idle weeks, and it’s a juicy matchup of two different option systems,” Lester said. “I have the utmost respect for Kansas State coach Bill Snyder. He’s familiar with Auburn coach Gus Malzahn and quarterback Nick Marshall, because he wanted both at his program.

“The public will be backing the sexy top-5 squad, but my money would be on the home dog.”

Florida Gators at Alabama Crimson Tide (-15.5)

The second-ranked Crimson Tide have gotten off to a 3-0 SU start this year, but they’ve failed to cash in any of those games, laying huge numbers – 22 in a 33-23 home win over West Virginia, 42 in a 41-0 shutout of Florida Atlantic, and a 52-12 rout giving 47 points to visiting Southern Mississippi.

Florida (2-0 SU, 1-1 ATS) is coming off a 36-30 home victory over Kentucky, falling well short as 17.5-point chalk.

“Do you get the feeling that ‘Bama is sleep-walking through this season thus far?” Lester said, showing concern with the two-quarterback system of Blake Sims and Jake Coker. “At the very least, it’s unsettling that they are experimenting with two guys under center. As the old adage goes, ‘If you have two quarterbacks, you don’t really have one.’ The Tide haven’t covered in a while (0-6-1 ATS last seven), so maybe they’re due, maybe not. Sharps will like the under in this one.”

Oklahoma Sooners (-11.5) at West Virginia Mountaineers

The fourth-ranked Sooners (3-0 SU, 2-1 ATS) leave their home state for the first time this season, and the Mountaineers (2-1 SU) have cashed in all three of their games this year, with their only SU loss coming in a 33-23 Week 1 setback catching 22 points at Alabama.

“Oklahoma quarterback Trevor Knight and the offense get a lot of pub, but this is a really good OU defense. I love that they’ve switched to the 3-4, and (defensive tackle) Jordan Phillips is an absolute beast on the inside,” Lester said. “We mostly saw Sooner money in the Tennessee game (a 34-10 win with Oklahoma a 21-point fave), so people are drinking the Kool-Aid. Keep that in mind.”

Roller coaster race for Buschs, Kenseth

JOLIET, Ill. -- A couple of near spin-outs on pit road, getting a free pass and a near crash between two brothers sums up Sunday's MyAFibStory.com 400 at Chicagoland Speedway for three drivers.

Kurt Busch started his day with a commitment line violation on lap 46 and had to serve a pass-through penalty that ended up putting him a lap down.

"I made a mistake early on trying to get on pit road, trying to get all I could," Busch said. "It was as if I was going to pass 15 cars and go to the lead all at once. I spun her around and it was a bad mistake on my part."

Busch stayed a lap down but moved through the field and was 14th at lap 135. He got up to the 11th position with about 57 laps to go.

But on a restart with 30 laps to go, Busch made contact with his brother, Kyle, and dropped back to 17th.

"I got in the corner in bad air and finally it bit and went down and Kurt was on my inside," Kyle Busch said. "I didn't even know there was room for a car down there. We just got together and luckily we all saved it and salvaged on."

Kurt Busch managed to rebound and ended up finishing 8th.

"I spent two-thirds of that race digging out of that hole and the last one-third racing hard," Kurt Busch said. "I got up as high as fifth or sixth, and on the final restart I fell back to eighth. Every spot is so crucial and you can see how everybody is racing."

Ryan Newman had bad luck during the Chase opener until the last few laps. Newman had tire issues and then was assessed two pit road penalties on lap 99: pitting before pit road was open and speeding.

With Newman's No. 31 Caterpillar Chevrolet forced to the back of the field, the South Bend, Indiana native ended up going two laps down -- where he stayed for most of the race.

But Newman caught a break with about 12 laps to go when he was awarded a free pass, bringing him up to 19th. Newman ended up 15th.

Matt Kenseth earned a top-10 finish after a rough start, where he also had pit road issues at the start of the race.

Kenseth managed to turn a spin entering pit road early in the race into a respectable 10th-place finish. But the 2003 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series champion isn't satisfied heading into Loudon, New Hampshire next weekend.

"I was really disappointed in the way we ran today," Kenseth said. "We were okay in the middle of the race, early middle. We were just fighting being loose and could make some progress in the long runs. We just got too tight and were slow on short runs and long runs. It was just a struggle. We showed a lot of speed most of the weekend, but just could never get it today where I wanted it to be."

Blue Jays prime fade material in series openers

The Toronto Blue Jays are struggling in series openers, slumping to a 2-10 record in their previous 12 series-opening games.

The Jays dropped eight-straight series opening games before going 2-2 in their previous four openers. That eight-game streak started with a 9-3 loss to the Baltimore Orioles at Rogers Centre back on Aug. 5.

Oriole Park at Camden Yards will be the site for their next series with the opener coming Monday.

Oddsmakers have the O's as -125 home faves as they will send Wei-Yin Chen to the mound. The Jays will counter with youngster Marcus Stroman.
