NCAA opening line report: Georgia favored in Week 3's marquee matchup

We’ve been treated to two weeks of numerous big games to open the college football season. It steps down a couple notches in Week 3, but there are still some intriguing contests on the docket that merit a good look.

The best matchup by far, and not surprisingly, comes in the Southeastern Conference Saturday. Sixth-ranked Georgia (1-0 SU and ATS) travels to take on No. 24 South Carolina.

The Bulldogs are coming off a bye after ripping then-No. 16 Clemson 45-21, easily cashing as 10-point home chalks. The Gamecocks (1-1 SU, 0-2 ATS) got pasted in their season opener, losing 52-28 as a 9.5-point home favorite against Texas A&M, then held off East Carolina 33-23 Saturday laying 14 points at home.

Georgia opened as a 4.5-point favorite, and the number is now as high as 6, which surprised Jay Kornegay, the vice president of race and sports operations at the Westgate Las Vegas Superbook.

“Normally you wouldn’t see a number like this for the road team,” Kornegay said. “History is on South Carolina’s side, but the Gamecocks have looked awful this year, and their defense hasn’t shown up.”

Purdue Boilermakers vs. Notre Dame Fighting Irish (-28)

With the return of quarterback Everett Golson, who sat out all of last year on academic suspension, Notre Dame is looking much more like the team that had a perfect regular season two years ago. The Irish are 2-0 SU and ATS, shutting out Michigan 31-0 Saturday as a 4-point home fave. On the flip side, the Boilermakers (1-1 SU and ATS) just got rolled at home by Central Michigan, 38-17 as a 3-point favorite.

“Purdue was supposed to show improvement this year, and we’re still waiting,” Kornegay said. “Notre Dame looked impressive, but I have a feeling that Michigan is further down than most expected. These are two teams going in opposite directions.”

UCLA Bruins (-7) at Texas Longhorns

UCLA is 2-0 SU and ranked No. 12 in the AP poll, but the Bruins haven’t covered in either of their first two games, including Saturday’s 42-35 win over Memphis, when they were laying 22 points at home.

However, Texas (1-1 SU and ATS) could be in a worse spot, coming off an incredibly embarrassing 41-7 home loss to Brigham Young as a one-point favorite.

“UCLA has offensive line problems, and the run game is nonexistent. But the Memphis performance doesn’t surprise us, as the Tigers are an underrated team. The UCLA results are not as bad as they seem,” Kornegay said. “Texas has a plethora of injuries on the O-line, and the QB (David Ash) is still out. New coach Charlie Strong has issues right now, but he’s probably more concerned about developing his culture than winning games.”

Tennessee Volunteers at Oklahoma Sooners (-21)

Tennessee is off to a 2-0 SU start (1-1 ATS), including a 34-19 home win Saturday over Arizona State, with the Vols falling just short as 16-point chalk.

But Tennessee isn’t getting much respect against fourth-ranked Oklahoma (2-0 SU, 1-1 ATS), which is coming off a 52-7 pounding of Tulsa as a 24-point chalk.

“Tennessee has looked lights-out and has dramatically improved. However, the Vols are still very young, they have a new O-line, and this is their first road game,” Kornegay noted. “Oklahoma looks all the part of a top-five team. The Sooners haven’t played anyone yet, but the victory over Louisiana Tech - which scored two backdoor TDs late – looks more impressive after La. Tech destroyed Louisiana-Lafayette last weekend.”

Wake Forest Demon Deacons at Utah State Aggies (-14)

Utah State is currently a 14-point home favorite over Wake Forest, but I expect the line to rise throughout the week. Utah State took a ton of money in its season opener at Tennessee, but they got crushed 38-7. The Aggies bounced back nicely last week in their 40-20 win over FCS Idaho State, and they should play even better in this game.

Wake Forest is a bad team. The Demon Deacons are void of talent and they are in the process of learning new head coach Dave Clawson’s system. Wake Forest was awful in their first game, a 17-10 home loss to UL-Monroe after gaining a total of 94 yards of offense. They beat a terrible FCS Gardner Webb 23-7 last week, but it’s back to reality in the thin air and altitude at Utah State Saturday. This line will close higher than two touchdowns, so lay -14 now.

Spread to wait on

Central Florida Knights (+9.5) at Missouri Tigers

There was a flood of money against Missouri last week for their game at Toledo. That money was dead wrong as the Tigers rolled to an easy 49-24 win. Bettors don’t like to lose money against a team two weeks in a row, so I don’t expect strong anti-Missouri money this week.

The current line has Missouri -9.5 at home, so waiting for a possible +10 to pop up is the correct betting strategy for this game. Central Florida lost its season opener against Penn State in Ireland but the Knights had last week off, so they’ll come with a strong effort in this game. Penn State came back and won last week, so maybe UCF’s 26-24 loss wasn’t so bad. Professional bettors will wait to hit this game in hopes the public ticks the line up to double digits.

Total to watch

Nevada Wolf Pack at Arizona Wildcats (57)

Nevada and Arizona both come into this game off poor offensive outings. Nevada scored just 24 points in its home win over Washington State while Arizona only scored 26 points in its win at Texas-San Antonio. But those low-scoring outputs should be attributed to the defenses they played.

This total is projected to open in the high 50s, according to the early odds in Las Vegas. If the total comes out lower than expected, there will be some value on the Over. Arizona has scored 35 points or more in five of its last seven home games, while Nevada allowed 47.3 points per game on the road last season.

Sun Belt, C-USA among best ATS conferences, AAC the worst

The most talented teams don’t always make for the best bets.

How else could you explain mid-major conferences like the Sun Belt and Conference USA boasting a 68 percent ATS success rate through the first two weeks of the season, while power leagues like the AAC, ACC, Big Ten and Pac-12 continue to burn bettors?

The Sun Belt (13-6 combined ATS record amongst members) and C-USA (17-8 ATS) each boast a 68 percent success rate against the spread heading into Week 3, despite ranking among the weakest conferences in college football.

The Sun Belt boasts three undefeated ATS teams at 2-0 ATS: New Mexico State, Arkansas State, and Georgia Southern. The C-USA, which has 13 members compared to the Sun Belt’s 11, has six perfect 2-0 ATS teams: UAB, FIU, Middle Tennessee, UTEP, Louisiana Tech, and Texas-San Antonio.

The only group with a combined ATS record better than those two mid-majors is the four-team stable of Independent programs not confined by a conference, which have gone combined 6-1 ATS (86 percent) in the first two weeks of the schedule. Navy has the lone blemish on the Independents’ record, failing to cover as a 13.5-point underdog to Ohio State in Week 1.

In fact, the only other conference to show a profit during that span is the all-mighty SEC. Its members are 16-10 ATS (62 percent) in the opening 14 days of football – likely a grim result for bookmakers who take a ton of action on SEC schools every time they face a non-conference opponent.

The biggest money pit in college football is the still new-car smell AAC, whose members have only covered in 32 percent of their games this year. American Athletic Conference programs are just 7-13 ATS, with UConn, Houston, SMU and Tulane bringing up the rear at 0-2 ATS.

The Mid-American Conference (10-15 ATS, 40 percent), Big Ten (11-16 ATS, 41 percent), Mountain West (10-14 ATS, 42 percent), Pac-12 (10-14 ATS, 42 percent), ACC (11-15 ATS, 42 percent), and Big 12 (9-9 ATS, 50 percent) round out the bottom of the ATS rankings.

Oklahoma struggling to cover versus SEC

The Oklahoma Sooners have had their fare share of troubles covering against the SEC. The Sooners are a measly 1-5 against the spread in their last six games against the conference.

Oklahoma takes on the Tennessee Volunteers Saturday. The No. 3-ranked Sooners are currently -20.5 faves for the matchup.

Mid-Major Money: Big profits from NCAAF small conferences

Team to watch: Utah State Aggies

This week: -14 vs. Wake Forest

Utah State quarterback Chuckie Keeton has completed a horrendous 31 of 65 (47.7 percent) passes through two games, but head coach Matt Wells chalks it up to unselfish play and smart decision-making while under pressure and on the run. Wells said he anticipates Keeton enjoying his best outing of the season against a Wake Forest squad that ranked 88th in FBS total defense in 2013.

Expected to be one of the bottom-feeders in a weak ACC, Wake Forest is off to a sluggish start in its non-conference slate. The Demon Deacons lost to Louisiana Monroe 17-10 before beating Gardner-Webb 23-7.

At this rate, their injury/suspension list will read like an oversized novel by the time the season ends. The most recent addition is suspended backup quarterback Kevin Sousa. Wake Forest is 1-5 ATS in its last six overall.

Team to beware: UNLV Runnin’ Rebels

This week: +9.5 vs. Northern Illinois

UNLV’s scoring offense rankings in the bottom five nationally after the team put up 13 points in each of its first two contests. The Rebels are coming off a 13-12 win over Northern Colorado, but they threw four interceptions in that victory. The offensive line was expected to be one of the best in the Mountain West but has been mediocre at best and it is now going up against a Northern Illinois defense that recorded five sacks in last week’s upset of Northwestern.

Northern Illinois runs a zone-read offense - the same system used by Arizona in the Wildcats’ 58-13 season-opening rout of UNLV. The Rebels also have to prepare for three quarterbacks after Northern Illinois utilized a trio against Northwestern in the early stages of the post-Jordan Lynch era. Drew Hare was most effective, completing six of 10 passes for 109 yards and two touchdowns.

Total team: Louisiana Tech Bulldogs

This week: 54 at North Texas

The Under is 10-4 in Louisiana Tech’s last 14 overall, 5-1 in its last six conference games, and 10-2 in North Texas’ last 12 home games. But sometimes you just have to throw trends out the window, and that is the case for this Thursday’s game between the Bulldogs and the Mean Green.

Louisiana Tech is coming off a week in which it pinned 533 yards and 48 points on an opponent (Louisiana-Lafayette) that was favored to win by 16 points. A balanced attack in the Bulldogs’ 28-point win saw Cody Sokol throw for 295 yards and Kenneth Dixon rush for 184. North Texas, meanwhile, clobbered SMU 43-6.

On the defensive side of the ball, Tech safety Thomas McDonald (personal) is still questionable and Mean Green backup safety John Schilleci was arrested earlier this week and suspended for Thursday’s contest.

Five high-scoring NCAAF teams having problems producing points

Did someone forget to pay the power bill? These college football programs have gone from having a lights-out offense to having the lights turned off on the scoreboard.

We break down why these once-potent point producers are struggling to find paydirt in 2014 and what’s up next for them – and NCAAF bettors.

Ball State Cardinals (8-5 O/U 2013, 0-2 O/U 2014)

Through two games in 2013, the Cardinals averaged 45.5 points but so far this season, they’ve scored just 21.5 ppg. They did play Iowa, which factors into the decline, but the change at QB is the real reason behind this dip.

Keith Wenning (35 TD vs. 7 INT in 2013) is gone and replaced with sophomore Ozzie Mann (56.5 percent completions, 2 TD vs. 1 INT). Ball State also lost three of its four top receivers, including Willie Snead who snagged 106 balls last season.

Next game: vs. Indiana State (-17, N/A)

SMU Mustangs (7-5 O/U 2013, 1-1 O/U 2014)

After averaging 26.8 ppg in 2013, the Mustangs have managed just three points in two games. Head coach June Jones has resigned and their defensive coordinator has been named the interim coach.

Southern Methodist doesn’t appear to be settled on a starting QB heading into the bye week. It also leads the nation with five fumbles lost and has turned the ball over eight times in two games. This could get worse before it gets better.

Fresno State Bulldogs (6-6-1 O/U 2013, 2-0 O/U 2014)

Derek Carr threw for over 5,000 yards in 2013. His replacements Brandon Connette and Brian Burrell have struggled to gain their footing, completing just 55.3 percent of their passes and throwing for a combined 221 ypg.

The Bulldogs also had to replace a tandem of receivers that combined to catch 231 balls in 2013. Their average points per game has decreased from 43.4 to 20 and they’re currently 0-2 ATS. However, due to their porous defense they are 2-0 O/U.

Next game: vs. Nebraska (+10, 66)

Ohio State Buckeyes (10-4 O/U 2013, 1-1 O/U 2014)

Everybody knows about the Braxton Miller injury and its huge impact on the Buckeyes. What hasn't been talked about as much is the loss of 1,500-yard rusher Carlos Hyde. Hyde averaged 7.31 ypc in 2013 on 17 attempts per game.

So far, Ohio State’s leading rusher (not counting QB JT Barrett) has run for a total of 76 yards in two games. The combination of a new QB and a lackluster running game has spelled doom for the Buckeyes.

Next game: vs. Kent State (-32, 51)

Vanderbilt Commodores (8-5 O/U 2013, 0-2 O/U 2014)

Under James Franklin, Vanderbilt forged an identity of being a hard-nosed team that went to war in the trenches and wasn't afraid to get dirty. Under new coach Derek Mason, the only identity Vandy has is that it has no identity.

After two games, the Commodores are dead last in the SEC and 125th in the nation in total offense. They haven't found anyone to replace All-SEC performer Jordan Matthews. The three QBs that have been used have combined for zero TD and four INT, and the team is tied for the lead in the nation with eight turnovers.

Chance of thunderstorms for Thursday night game

According to Weather Underground, forecasts are calling for a 40 percent chance of thunderstorms in Denton, TX as the North Texas Mean Green host the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs Thursday evening.

Temperatures look to be in the mid-70s for kickoff and wind will from the north at six mph.

The Mean Green are currently 3.5-point home faves and the total opened at 48.

Syracuse and Central Michigan could see rainstorm

The Syracuse Orange and Central Michigan Chippewas will be playing in less than ideal conditions Saturday. At kickoff there is a 60 percent chance of rain and there will be winds gusting from seven to nine miles per hour.

Central Michigan are 7-point home dogs Saturday.

Thursday's games
Third straight road game for Louisiana Tech, which allowed 852 yards in splitting first two games; Tech is 9-4 vs spread in last 13 games as a road underdog, 2-0 this year- they lost 28-13 (+3) at home to North Texas LY, getting outrushed 165-37. North Texas hammered SMU 43-6 last week after getting waxed at Texas; Mean Green covered eight of ten as a home favorite under McCarney. UNT has only nine starters back from LY- both teams have new QBs this season.

BYU (-10) won 47-46 at Houston LY, ringing up 41 first downs while outgaining Coogs 681-483. BYU scored 76 points in opening road wins at Cincy/Texas- they have 453 rushing yards in two games. Houston got upset at home by UTSA in opener when they had six turnovers, then whacked a I-AA team last week; they're 13-7 as road dogs since '05, 4-1 under Levine. BYU is 14-8 as home favorites last four years; they have junior QB with 17 starts. Houston's soph QB has 13 starts.

Houston Cougars at BYU Cougars (-18.5, 58.5)

Houston doesn't have a lot of time to prepare for its trip to Brigham Young on Thursday, so coach Tony Levine is going to refer back to last year's hard-fought 47-46 loss to BYU. "It'll be a physical game," Levine said Saturday. "It certainly was last year and (BYU) is a physical program. They are always one of the top defenses in the nation. It is about us and how we feel we can play. We have got to do a great job with turnovers and turnover margin and we've got to fly around and tackle on defense and get those guys on the ground." Houston felt pretty good Saturday after a 47-0 beating of Grambling State, forcing six turnovers and scoring a defensive touchdown.

Houston will try to keep BYU's defense - which has been impressive in two lopsided victories - off-balance by using different personnel in the backfield. John O'Korn showed improvements between the first and second week and the club has used receivers Greg Ward Jr. and Daniel Spencer at quarterback in special packages. BYU quarterback Taysom Hill has accounted for 685 total yards, five rushing touchdowns and three scoring passes on the way to back-to-back FBS Independent Offensive Player of the Week honors.

ABOUT HOUSTON (1-1): O'Korn has completed 52.2 percent of his passes for 404 yards, one touchdown and four interceptions while Ward Jr. (five carries for 22 yards and a score) and Spencer (two carries for minus-1 yard) have mostly been used on running plays. Kenneth Farrow leads the ground game with 151 yards after a career-high 130 against Grambling State. Houston is allowing 342.5 yards and has forced a turnover in 25 straight games - the third-longest active streak in the country.

ABOUT BRIGHAM YOUNG (2-0): BYU is allowing 8.5 points and just 76.5 yards rushing after road wins over Connecticut (35-10) and Texas (41-7). Hill has completed 73 percent of his passes and is averaging 5.4 yards per run while Jamaal Williams rushed for 89 yards against Texas. Linebacker Bronson Kaufusi, who had two sacks against UConn, left the Texas game with an ankle injury and his status is unknown.

Houston-BYU to be playing in high winds

The all-Cougars clash between Houston and BYU could be getting a little windy. At kickoff there is expected to be wind gusts upwards of 12 miles per hour, with it slowly decreasing through the game.

BYU is currently 17.5-home faves over Houston Thursday.

Bulldogs/Mean Green to see winds, thundershowers

The Louisiana Tech Bulldogs certainly did not take good weather with them to Apogee Stadium. Leading into the clash between the Bulldogs and the North Texas Mean Green there is a 20 percent chance of thundershowers, but by the fourth quarter the chances raise to 60 percent.

Winds could cause a problem as well gusting between six and 11 miles per hour.
