    Armadillo: Tuesday's six-pack

-- Lions 35, Giants 14-- Detroit won 20 of 28 third down plays.

-- Cardinals 18, Chargers 17-- Not Philip Rivers' finest hours.

-- Milwaukee starting pitchers are 1-11, 6.95 in their last 13 games.

-- June Jones resigned as football coach at SMU; Rick Neuheisel's son plays for the Mustangs. He'd be an interesting hire.

-- Dodgers beat San Diego 9-4, but they made three throwing errors on one play.

-- A's were 66-41 when they made the Cespedes/Lester trade; they're 14-22 since. Those are the facts; they are not in dispute.

    **********

Armadillo: Tuesday's List of 13: Not your average Monday.....

    13) NFL banned Ray Rice from playing for punching his fiance, who apparently lacks in decision making skills, since she married the guy after he laid her out in a casino elevator. She probably married Rice because he was rich; now? Not so much.

    12) About 20 minutes after Rice got banned, which is huge news, the NCAA PR geniuses decided to announce that Penn State has been let off the hook for the Jerry Sandusky debasco. Lions are bowl eligible now, and will have their full boat of scholarships again, starting in 2015-16. A slap on the wrist.

This is called burying news on a day when they can't get the headline; Bruce Pearl got more probation for inviting a recruit to his house for a cookout than Penn State did for knowingly harboring a pedophile for over a decade.

Female journalists got on their high horse about the Rice incident; but aren't too prominent in defending children in central Pennsylvania.

    11) Folks at USC aren't too pleased either; they got hammered over the Reggie Bush thing. USC has 65 kids on scholarship right now. Which offense was worse, paying off a star player's family, or harboring a pedophile?

If the NCAA isn't careful, AD Pat Haden will fly to Kansas and run into the NCAA offices to yell at their enforcement staff, the way he did at Stanford Saturday.

    10) Maybe all the new bowl games are a factor; its going to look ridiculous when losing teams play in bowl games this December. Having as many big name teams as possible be bowl eligible helps everyone save face. Penn State has a lot of loyal fans who will travel to a bowl. If you think that wasn't a factor, you're naive.

    9) Then there's the nitwit who is selling the Atlanta Hawks; he tried to sell the team three years ago, but couldn't find a buyer. Call me a conspiracy theorist, but do you think he saw what Donald Sterling got for the Clippers, and suddenly decided it would be very profitable to be labeled a racist?

Now that he called himself out as racist, he figures the NBA will help find him a buyer who will cough up major money, especially with the new TV deal about to kick in. Getting a check for $1B softens the blow of being called a racist.

    8) Lot of talk on September 9 about Jim Harbaugh leaving the 49ers after this year; either the Dolphins or U of Michigan, where Harbaugh played. Miami has a good coach, but he's an anonymous guy, so could be sacrificed to hire a big name unless the Fish win big this season. Harbaugh has won huge in San Francisco.

    7) Brett Favre and Peyton Manning are only two QBs in NFL history to beat all 32 NFL teams; Brady has never played against the Patriots, obviously.

    6) Colts' star LB Robert Mathis tore his achilles while working out on his own and is out for the year; he was suspended for the first four games already.

    5) Westgate Hotel sportsbook guru Jay Kornegay said that Sunday was one of the most profitable NFL days the casino has ever had. The public bets favorites.

    4) Good program on ESPNU Mondays; Crunch Time- they show the key parts to all the close games on Saturday's college football card.

    3) It is important to not overreact to Week 1 NFL results, it really is.

    2) Belated best wishes to Ron Washington, who did great things as a coach for the A's and manager in Texas. Hope whatever the problems are get resolved soon.

    1) Spent much of Monday in a veterans' hospital with my dad, who is undergoing some treatment; the people there are so nice, its encouraging to see. The VA staff works very hard, and I appreciate that. Sometimes unimportant things take over in our lives-- a day like Monday reinforced what the most important things are.

NFL Opening Line Report: Oddsmakers not sold on Niners in Week 2

Week 1 of the NFL season was quite the roller-coaster ride for fans – and surely for bettors, as well. The Week 2 lineup looks to bring more of the same, and it gets going in short order on Thursday night, when the Pittsburgh Steelers travel to face the archrival Baltimore Ravens.

The Ravens are at home for a second straight week, and could find themselves in a rough spot if they can’t get it done against Pittsburgh. They opened the season Sunday with a 23-16 loss as a 1-point chalk against Cincinnati, and two AFC North Division losses could be tough to recover from.

“They’re already a game behind both the Steelers and the Bengals, a loss here puts them two back of the Steelers and if the Bengals take care of business versus the Falcons, that’s two games behind them,” Michael Stewart, an oddsmakers for CarbonSports.ag tells Covers.

The Steelers, meanwhile, blew all of a 27-3 halftime lead at home against Cleveland, needing a field goal as time expired to take a 30-27 win while failing to cash as a 5.5-point favorite. Pittsburgh opened as a 2.5-point favorite against a Baltimore team that desperately needs the win.

“This has historically been a very competitive rivalry and this game should be no exception,” says Stewart. “So far, the early action is split and I believe we will see little to zero line movement in this game.”

Kansas City Chiefs at Denver Broncos (-12)

The defending AFC champion Broncos jump into AFC West Division play, after holding off Indianapolis 31-24 but falling short as 8-point favorites, relinquishing almost all of a 24-7 halftime lead. The Chiefs, a playoff team last year, looked dreadful at home against Tennessee, losing 26-10 as a 3-point fave.

CarbonSports.ag opened Kansas City as a 11.5-point underdog and took immediate action on the Broncos. Stewart has a feeling the sharp bettors are trying to push this number even higher, before coming back on the Chiefs.

“Personally, I think the wiseguys are looking to get out ahead on this game and will eventually play it back +13.5 or even 14 if it gets that high, which it won’t in my opinion,” says Stewart. “This is a Chiefs team that looked awful at home versus the Titans and now travels to take on one of the best teams in the NFL. They’re surely going to struggle in this game and unless the wiseguys get involved, I can see us closing Broncos -13.”

Chicago Bears at San Francisco 49ers (-7)

The Bears already find themselves in a pinch after suffering the biggest upset of the day Sunday, dumping their home opener 23-20 in overtime to 7-point underdog Buffalo.

Meanwhile, San Francisco and its fans will likely be amped for the regular-season debut of the brand-spanking new Levi’s Stadium.

Not that the Niners need to be at home to draw fans. Anyone watching San Francisco’s 28-17 road trouncing of the Dallas Cowboys Sunday couldn’t help but notice the huge roars following all the big 49ers plays – particularly by the defense, which created four first-half turnovers as San Fran cashed laying 3.5 points.

However, that sloppy play from Dallas has clouded the bookmaker’s view of San Francisco, which may or may not be as good as advertised.

“Our wiseguys hammered the Cowboys in their game versus the 49ers because I believe they, like me, are convinced they’re not a good team and are an organization in turmoil,” says Stewart. “We opened this game 49ers -7 and as we expected, so far all the money is on the favorite and we’re fine with taking on that money at -7.”

Philadelphia Eagles at Indianapolis Colts (-3)

Indianapolis, which rallied but fell just short at Denver as an 8-point underdog in a 31-24 loss, aims to get back on track against a Philadelphia squad that mounted a successful comeback in Week 1.

The Eagles, giving 10 points, found themselves in a 17-0 halftime hole at home to Jacksonville, then scored the game’s final 34 points in a 34-17 victory.

The Colts hit the board as low as -2.5 and climbed to -3 for the Monday Night Football Week 2 showcase. The total for this game opened at a lofty 52.5 points and jumped to 53 with early money taking the Over with these two sides loaded with offensive weapons.

NCAAF Week 3 line watch: It's time to take the Aggies

                Spread to bet now

Wake Forest Demon Deacons at Utah State Aggies (-14)

Utah State is currently a 14-point home favorite over Wake Forest, but I expect the line to rise throughout the week. Utah State took a ton of money in its season opener at Tennessee, but they got crushed 38-7. The Aggies bounced back nicely last week in their 40-20 win over FCS Idaho State, and they should play even better in this game.

Wake Forest is a bad team. The Demon Deacons are void of talent and they are in the process of learning new head coach Dave Clawson’s system. Wake Forest was awful in their first game, a 17-10 home loss to UL-Monroe after gaining a total of 94 yards of offense. They beat a terrible FCS Gardner Webb 23-7 last week, but it’s back to reality in the thin air and altitude at Utah State Saturday. This line will close higher than two touchdowns, so lay -14 now.

                Spread to wait on

Central Florida Knights (+9.5) at Missouri Tigers

There was a flood of money against Missouri last week for their game at Toledo. That money was dead wrong as the Tigers rolled to an easy 49-24 win. Bettors don’t like to lose money against a team two weeks in a row, so I don’t expect strong anti-Missouri money this week.

The current line has Missouri -9.5 at home, so waiting for a possible +10 to pop up is the correct betting strategy for this game. Central Florida lost its season opener against Penn State in Ireland but the Knights had last week off, so they’ll come with a strong effort in this game. Penn State came back and won last week, so maybe UCF’s 26-24 loss wasn’t so bad. Professional bettors will wait to hit this game in hopes the public ticks the line up to double digits.

                Total to watch

Nevada Wolf Pack at Arizona Wildcats (57)

Nevada and Arizona both come into this game off poor offensive outings. Nevada scored just 24 points in its home win over Washington State while Arizona only scored 26 points in its win at Texas-San Antonio. But those low-scoring outputs should be attributed to the defenses they played.

This total is projected to open in the high 50s, according to the early odds in Las Vegas. If the total comes out lower than expected, there will be some value on the Over. Arizona has scored 35 points or more in five of its last seven home games, while Nevada allowed 47.3 points per game on the road last season.

NFL line watch: Don't wait on Broncos vs. Chiefs

                  Spread to bet now

Kansas City Chiefs (+12) at Denver Broncos

Already in scramble mode after a stomach-punch, 16-point loss to the Titans at home in Week 1, the Chiefs will have to avoid doubling down on bad when they travel to Denver. It’s the worst matchup at the worst time, and the hefty 12-point spread probably won’t be enough.

Kansas City will be facing the Broncos without two key players who have probably been lost for the rest of the year. Pro Bowl linebacker Derrick Johnson and starting defensive tackle Mike DeVito both suffered ruptured Achilles tendons in the devastating loss to Tennessee.

And if all that isn’t enough to cause Chiefs fans to spend time alone in a dark room, consider KC’s schedule after Denver – New England at home, then road games at San Francisco and San Diego. Things ease up after that, but by Halloween it might already be curtains for a team that won its first nine games last season.

                  Spread to wait on

New England Patriots at (-3) at Minnesota Vikings

The Patriots can’t be this bad. Can they?

Oddsmakers don’t think so, and the Pats give three points this week in Minnesota despite peeing all over themselves in the second half in Miami, mainly because they couldn’t stop the Dolphins’ ground game. And the Vikes just happened to run the ball down the Rams’ throats in Week 1.

Still, the NFL is a game of adjustments and no one is better at taking away a team’s strength than Bill Belichick. He is loath to stack the defensive line to stop the run and prefers to flood the secondary, but this week he may be able to afford it because Matt Cassel doesn’t figure to throw for 300 yards. Early money is on New England, which could bump the number up to 3.5 by mid week.

                  Total to watch

Pittsburgh Steelers at Baltimore Ravens (44)

By now, Over players should know to approach AFC North games much like they would a rattlesnake.

Coaches in the division are wary of opening up their offenses and field-goal games grow on trees. This one shouldn’t be much different than the two the teams played last season (Steelers, 19-16 and Ravens, 22-20).

Baltimore in particular won’t be in a gambling mood after its one-possession loss to Cincinnati on opening day. This game could easily remain in the 30s and the 44-point number seems at least a field goal too heavy.

Potential thunderstorms as White Sox host A's

Weather forecasts around U.S. Cellular Field are calling for a 40 percent possibility of thunderstorms ahead of - and during - Monday's meeting between the Chicago White Sox and Oakland A's.

Skies will be mostly cloudy leading up to first pitch with rain expected to fall prior to game time. As the game progresses, the chance of storms increases to 50 percent.

The Pale Hose are big +174 underdogs for the game and will send John Danks to the mound. The A's will counter with Jon Lester.

Faves reigning over National League Action

There has been next to no underdog value in National League action for several days now. NL play has seen the faves go a stellar 21-6 between Friday and Monday.

There are seven games in the NL Tuesday.

Kansas City Royals at Detroit Tigers (-172, 7.5)

The Detroit Tigers have a chance to move into a tie for first place in the American League Central and have the man they want on the mound in the second of a three-game series against the visiting Kansas City Royals on Tuesday. Reigning Cy Young Award winner Max Scherzer gets the start for Detroit, which won the series opener 9-5 to shave Kansas City's lead to one game. Scherzer is 9-1 at Comerica Park this season, but the one defeat came at the hands of the Royals.

Kansas City designated hitter Billy Butler usually torments the Tigers, entering the series with a .327 career batting average against them, but he was hitless in four at-bats Monday to extend his overall slump to 1-for-20 over the past six games. Salvador Perez, who also has a lifetime batting average of better than .300 against Detroit, is 0-for-12 in his last three contests following a six-game hitting streak. Left-hander Jason Vargas will make his fourth start this season against the Tigers, who trail Seattle by a half-game and Oakland by 1 1/2 for the top two wild cards.

Playoffs? A look at NASCAR, elimination style

Sixteen drivers remain in contention to become NASCAR's Sprint Cup Series champion, and for the first time there will be elimination-style playoffs to get there.

NASCAR's Chase format now features three elimination rounds and a one-race climax at the usual finish line, Homestead-Miami Speedway on Nov. 16.

Sixteen drivers enter the playoffs this week at Joliet's Chicagoland Speedway, where the 26-race regular season gives way to the expanded Chase. Thirteen drivers are in by virtue of winning regular-season races and three earned a spot with their position in the standings.

The favorite is Brad Keselowski and the No. 2 team, which had a Sprint series-best four victories in 2014, including two 1.5-mile speedways (Las Vegas and Kentucky), and there are five such tracks in the Chase.

                            The Standings

All drivers bank 2,000 points, plus three points for regular-season victories. Keselowski leads with 2,012 and four are even with 2,009: Jeff Gordon, Dale Earnhardt Jr., Jimmie Johnson and Joey Logano. Among drivers with the same point total, order of finish determines their place in the official standings. The first tiebreaker is most second-place finishes.

Gordon is No. 2 entering Chicagoland with wins in Indianapolis, Kansas and Michigan.

As in the regular season, drivers must start ever race or receive a NASCAR waiver to remain in contention.

                            The First Round

Races at Chicagoland, New Hampshire and Dover define NASCAR's "Challenger Round." A race victory by drivers who have not yet been eliminated from the Championship guarantees a spot in the final 12, or the "Contender Round."

Points will determine the rest of the field.

                            The Contender Round

All remaining drivers are reset at 3,000 points. Four more drivers are eliminated over the course of three races -- at Kansas Speedway, Charlotte Motor Speedway and Talladega Superspeedway -- and, again, a victory guarantees a spot in the subsequent round.

                            The Eliminator Round

Eight drivers, all starting with 4,000 points when the green flag drops at Martinsville Speedway -- followed by spins through Texas Motor Speedway and Phoenix International Raceway -- are fighting to be in the final four. Only the four remaining drivers are eligible for the NASCAR Sprint Cup Championship at Homestead on Nov. 16.

The highest finisher among the four finalists is champion.
