    Armadillo: Monday's six-pack

-- Oklahoma State QB JW Walsh broke his foot Saturday, is out 6-8 weeks.

-- Baltimore has a 9.5-game lead in AL East; their magic number to clinch is 10.

-- Yasiel Puig batted 7th for the Dodgers Sunday, after going 8 for his last 65. Will be very interested to see what the Dodgers do with their playoff roster.

-- In his last 36 holes of the BMW tourney, Morgan Hofmann had 17 birdies and an eagle. Thats pretty good at pitch 'n putt.

-- Big night in Detroit Monday; Royals-Tigers and Giants-Lions in Motown.

-- At what point does Peyton Manning become known as Mr September?

    **********

Armadillo: Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports Sunday......

    13) Falcons 37, Saints 34 OT-- Best game of day, but not lot of defense; only one of nine TD drives was less than 80 yards and that was 71. Teams combined to go 14 of 24 on third down. Falcons averaged 10.1 yards per pass attempt.

    12) Vikings 34, Rams 6-- Worst game of day, good start for Mike Zimmer, who had to wait until age 58 to get his first head coaching job. Norv Turner made good use of speedy WR Patterson in this game-- he's a weapon.

    11) Steelers 30, Browns 27-- Pittsburgh blew 27-3 halftime lead, then won at gun on a 41-yard FG. Hoyer played whole game for Browns, who gained 389 yards and didn't turn ball over. Only one TD in three red zone trip for Steelers.

    10) Eagles 34, Jaguars 17-- Jax scored early, with turnover-aided drives of 44-21 yards, and led 17-0 at halftime, but was outscored 34-0 in second half, with bad beat of day when Iggles scored defensive TD with 1:23 left for the cover.

    9) Jets 19, Raiders 14-- Eight teams were +2 or better in turnovers this week; only the Raiders/Jaguars lost, maybe two worst teams in NFL. Jets outrushed Oakland 212-25, but had only one TD, two FGs on four red zone drives.

    8) Bengals 23, Ravens 16-- Cincy tried FGs on six of first seven drives, making first five. Flacco blew easy FG just before half with pathetic clock management and it cost them late. Bengals hit AJ Green for game-winning bomb with 4:58 left.

    7) Bills 23, Bears 20 OT-- Buffalo ran ball for 193 yards, had 14-yard advantage in field position- they averaged 7.3 yards per pass attempt, were +2 in turnovers. Jay Cutler passed for 341 yards, but also threw two interceptions.

    6) Texans 17, Redskins 6-- Washington scored first, then had PAT blocked and never scored again. Houston blocked punt for TD, so rough day for Redskins' special teams. Teams combined for one TD, two empty trips on four red zone drives.

    5) Titans 26, Chiefs 10-- KC was -24 in turnovers in 2012, +18 LY, now they're -3 this year. Titans had 162 rushing yards, 243 passing, as they outgained Chiefs by 160 yards and had 10-yard edge in field position.

    4) Dolphins 33, Patriots 20-- Only thing more depressing than the Ram game was drafting Tom Brady in my fantasy league, then watching him get outscored by Ryan Tannehill, who doesn't even know which teams are in the AFC East. Dolphins had TD drives of 15 and 34 yards- they shut Patriots out in second half.

    3) Panthers 20, Buccaneers 14-- Carolina gets a divisional road win with Newton in street clothes; rookie WR Benjamin looks like a keeper for Panthers. Tampa Bay DB dropped an INT in last 2:00 that would've set up at least a trying FG, then they fumbled on first play after the Carolina punt.

    2) 49ers 28, Cowboys 17-- FOX had two 4:25 games; they insist on pretending the Cowboys are good, so they get marquee games. Since 1997, Dallas is 137-138 in the regular season, with one playoff win. Their last winning season was in 2009.

    1) Broncos 31, Colts 24-- Week 1 so far: favorites are 4-9-1 vs spread, home dogs are 2-1. Under is 9-5 with two games left. Denver had a 24-7 lead at the half, then hung on for dear life for the win. Luck was impressive in the second half.

Lines hit the board for Week 3 schedule

Online sportsbook BetOnline has released odds for this week's slate of games in college football.

Of note, the Oregon Ducks will host the Wyoming Cowboys as massive 43-point favorites. The Ducks looked impressive in Week 2's 46-27 victory over the Michigan State Spartans. The Ducks improved to 1-1 ATS after failing to cover as 52-point favorites versus South Dakota State in Week 1.

Elsewhere, the Georgia Bulldogs have opened as 4-point road favorites at South Carolina. The Bulldogs are off a bye week after opening the season with a 45-21 win versus Clemson. Meanwhile, the Gamecocks have been an ice-cold wager, starting the season 0-2 ATS.

Here's a look at the opening lines for the Top 25 programs in the AP poll:

      Wyoming at (2) Oregon (-43)
Southern Mississippi at (3) Alabama (-49)
      Tennessee at (4) Oklahoma (-21)
      (6) Georgia at (24) South Carolina (+4)
      (8) Baylor at Buffalo (+30.5)
      (9) USC at Boston College (+20)
Purdue at (11) Notre Dame (-29.5)
      (12) UCLA at Texas (+6)
      Army at (15) Stanford (-27.5)
      (16) Arizona State at Colorado (13.5)
East Carolina at (17) Virginia Tech (-10.5)
      Central Florida at (20) Missouri
      (21) Louisville at Virginia (+8.5)
Kent State at (22) Ohio State (-26.5)
      Houston at (25) BYU (-14.5)

NCAA opening line report: Georgia favored in Week 3's marquee matchup

We’ve been treated to two weeks of numerous big games to open the college football season. It steps down a couple notches in Week 3, but there are still some intriguing contests on the docket that merit a good look.

The best matchup by far, and not surprisingly, comes in the Southeastern Conference Saturday. Sixth-ranked Georgia (1-0 SU and ATS) travels to take on No. 24 South Carolina.

The Bulldogs are coming off a bye after ripping then-No. 16 Clemson 45-21, easily cashing as 10-point home chalks. The Gamecocks (1-1 SU, 0-2 ATS) got pasted in their season opener, losing 52-28 as a 9.5-point home favorite against Texas A&M, then held off East Carolina 33-23 Saturday laying 14 points at home.

Georgia opened as a 4.5-point favorite, and the number is now as high as 6, which surprised Jay Kornegay, the vice president of race and sports operations at the Westgate Las Vegas Superbook.

“Normally you wouldn’t see a number like this for the road team,” Kornegay said. “History is on South Carolina’s side, but the Gamecocks have looked awful this year, and their defense hasn’t shown up.”

Purdue Boilermakers vs. Notre Dame Fighting Irish (-28)

With the return of quarterback Everett Golson, who sat out all of last year on academic suspension, Notre Dame is looking much more like the team that had a perfect regular season two years ago. The Irish are 2-0 SU and ATS, shutting out Michigan 31-0 Saturday as a 4-point home fave. On the flip side, the Boilermakers (1-1 SU and ATS) just got rolled at home by Central Michigan, 38-17 as a 3-point favorite.

“Purdue was supposed to show improvement this year, and we’re still waiting,” Kornegay said. “Notre Dame looked impressive, but I have a feeling that Michigan is further down than most expected. These are two teams going in opposite directions.”

UCLA Bruins (-7) at Texas Longhorns

UCLA is 2-0 SU and ranked No. 12 in the AP poll, but the Bruins haven’t covered in either of their first two games, including Saturday’s 42-35 win over Memphis, when they were laying 22 points at home.

However, Texas (1-1 SU and ATS) could be in a worse spot, coming off an incredibly embarrassing 41-7 home loss to Brigham Young as a one-point favorite.

“UCLA has offensive line problems, and the run game is nonexistent. But the Memphis performance doesn’t surprise us, as the Tigers are an underrated team. The UCLA results are not as bad as they seem,” Kornegay said. “Texas has a plethora of injuries on the O-line, and the QB (David Ash) is still out. New coach Charlie Strong has issues right now, but he’s probably more concerned about developing his culture than winning games.”

Tennessee Volunteers at Oklahoma Sooners (-21)

Tennessee is off to a 2-0 SU start (1-1 ATS), including a 34-19 home win Saturday over Arizona State, with the Vols falling just short as 16-point chalk.

But Tennessee isn’t getting much respect against fourth-ranked Oklahoma (2-0 SU, 1-1 ATS), which is coming off a 52-7 pounding of Tulsa as a 24-point chalk.

“Tennessee has looked lights-out and has dramatically improved. However, the Vols are still very young, they have a new O-line, and this is their first road game,” Kornegay noted. “Oklahoma looks all the part of a top-five team. The Sooners haven’t played anyone yet, but the victory over Louisiana Tech - which scored two backdoor TDs late – looks more impressive after La. Tech destroyed Louisiana-Lafayette last weekend.”

Seattle Mariners ace Felix Hernandez is a whopping -299 favorite Monday evening against the visiting Houston Astros - the biggest edge of his 10 year major-league career. Hernandez is 2-1 in three starts this season as a fave of -200 or greater, including a 1-1 mark against the Astros.

                    Buehrle Hungry for Wins

Toronto Blue Jays lefty Mark Buehrle is on the lookout for a victory Tuesday as he hosts the Chicago Cubs. Buehrle has just one win since the All-Star break after going into the stretch with 10 victories - and has four no-decisions in his last five starts, all Toronto victories.

                    Pitching Notes

                    * It’s no surprise that Cy Young favorite Clayton Kershaw has been a strong under play as his Los Angeles Dodgers (-155) host the San Diego Padres on Monday. Kershaw, who leads the majors with a 1.70 ERA, has gone Under in eight of his last 10 starts, including five in a row.

                    * The Baltimore Orioles hope to continue riding the hot hand Tuesday as they send right-hander Chris Tillman to the hill against the host Boston Red Sox. The Orioles have won each of Tillman’s last eight starts, helping vault him into top spot on the pitcher value chart at +$1,320 entering Tuesday.

                    Hitting Notes

                    * Detroit Tigers first baseman Miguel Cabrera is heating up heading into Monday’s showdown with the visiting Kansas City Royals (+120, 8.5). Cabrera has 15 hits in 30 at-bats over the past seven days, with five home runs, nine RBIs and a ridiculous 1.567 OPS in that span.

                    * It could be a long night for the Dodgers hitters on Tuesday as they take on Andrew Cashner and the Padres. Members of the Los Angeles roster are hitting a paltry .225 in 129 combined at-bats versus Cashner, with just eight extra-base hits - and zero home runs - over that stretch.

                    Totals Streak

Minnesota Twins (8-0 O/U): Things are getting ugly for the Twins, who have put together an impressive Over streak after allowing at least five runs in six of their previous eight games. The recent surge has propelled Minnesota into top spot on the Over list for the season, at 76-62-5 O/U overall.

                    Prop of the Day

While the margin is razor-thin, bettors should consider taking the Padres Under 1.5 (+120) against Kershaw and the Dodgers. Kershaw has allowed just two runs on six hits in 17 innings against San Diego this season, while the Padres have scored fewer than two runs in four of their last five games.

                    Injury Notes

                    * Angels outfielder Josh Hamilton will miss Monday’s game against the host Cleveland Indians (-113, 7.5) with a nagging shoulder ailment that has sidelined him since last Thursday. Los Angeles hasn’t missed the slugger, going 3-0 SU, 3-0 O/U and +303 units in his absence.

                    * Oakland Athletics catcher John Jaso will return from the concussion disabled list this week, but is expected to be limited to pinch-hitting duty for the remainder of the season. The Athletics have struggled in his absence, going 4-10 SU, 5-9 O/U and a staggering -920 units in that span.

                    Weather Watch

                    * Wind at Comerica Park will blow in from center field at 7 mph for Monday’s game between the host Tigers (-130, 8.5) and Kansas City. Teams combined to hit 1.4 home runs per game under similar conditions in 2013, well below the stadium average of 1.87.

                    * Citi Field will see wind blowing from right to left field at 8 mph Tuesday when the Mets entertain the Colorado Rockies. Teams combined to hit a paltry .199 in six games under similar wind conditions a season ago.

Royals cashing tickets in Guthrie's road starts

The Kansas City Royals are 4-0 in Jeremy Guthrie's previous four road starts. The righty will be on the hill for the Royals as they visit the Detroit Tigers Monday.

The Royals picked up wins at Oakland (+201 dogs), at Arizona (-114), at Minnesota (-113) and at Texas (-119) in those four Guthrie starts.Guthrie is 6-4 in 14 starts away from Kauffman Stadium this season. He has an ERA of 3.84 on the road - almost a full run below his 4.79 ERA at home.

Oddsmakers have the Royals as +120 road dogs for the afternoon game versus the Tigers. Detroit is countering with Justin Verlander.

Finally! Here it comes, guys! As soon as other states see what this does for New Jersey's revenue flow, they'll all do it!

Report: NJ Attorney General declares sportsbetting legal

According to a facebook post by New Jersey Senator Ray Lesniak, sports betting has come to New Jersey.

Lesniak announced that New Jersey Attorney General, John Hoffman, has "issued a directive to law enforcement that prohibitions on Sports Wagering in casinos and at racetracks would no longer be enforced."

The Senator posted the following on Facebook earlier Monday:

                          "Sports Betting Victory at Last!

NJ Attorney General John Hoffman has issued a directive to law enforcement that prohibitions on sports wagering in casinos and at racetracks would no longer be enforced."

He followed up with the following Tweet:

"Stop the presses. NJ AG declares sports betting at NJ racetracks and casinos legal under my legislation. I'll take the Giants to cover tonight."

Braves cashing in for bettors against good teams

In order to make the MLB playoffs in the home stretch of the season, you need to win games against good teams. That's exactly what the Atlanta Braves have been doing recently.

Atlanta is 5-1 in their last six games against teams with records above .500. The Braves take on the Washington Nationals (80-61) in D.C. Monday.

The Nats are currently -137 faves on the moneyline with a total of seven.

Pirates struggling mightily on the road behind Locke

The Pittsburgh Pirates have been having a hard time manufacturing wins on the road behind starting pitcher Jeff Locke, dropping five out of the last six games he's started.

Locke will get the ball when the Pirates face off against the Philadelphia Phillies at Citizens Bank Park Monday. Kyle Kendrick counters on the mound for the Phils.

The Bucs are currently -123 faves with a total of 8.5.
