    Armadillo: Wednesday's six-pack

-- Jerry Jones can't resist a circus; having passed on Johnny Manziel, Cowboys are going to sign Michael Sam to their practice squad.

-- Florida Atlantic opens its football season at Nebraska, at Alabama; good for the school's accountants, bad for the players who get their butts kicked.

-- Seven different teams got #1 votes in the top 25 poll this week, the most in any week since 2008.

-- NFL suspended Colts' owner Jim Irsay for six games, mainly to placate the players union, which would've gone nuts if he got slapped on the wrist.

-- Buffalo Bills have $24M worth of dead money on their cap this year and don't have their #1 pick next year. Not sure they know what they're doing.

-- Want to feel old? Terry Bradshaw turns 66 this week.

    **********

Armadillo: Wednesday's List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud.......

    13) How different would Week 1 of the NFL season be if there were no exhibition games? Watching college games last weekend, they played pretty well, considering they don’t have any dress rehearsals like the pros do.

    12) Why is Gene Chizik working in the SEC Network TV studio while Charlie Weis has a head coaching job? Chizik won a national title at Auburn, somehow got fired there shortly after, and now can’t get another job? Meanwhile, Weis keeps getting jobs like he’s freakin’ Bear Bryant. Go figure.

    11) Cubs’ OF prospect Jorge Soler is off to a hot start in Chicago, going 11-22 in his first few games. Then again, Alcantara and Baez got off to hot starts when they first got to the majors too; now, Alcantara is batting .220, Baez .175. Being a really good hitter in the big leagues is difficult.

    10) Speaking of major league debuts, Dodger prospect Joc Pederson made his Monday night against Washington. Pederson was the first 30/30 (homers/steals) guy in the PCL in 80 years- his dad Stu Pederson played in eight games for the Dodgers in 1985, going 0-4 with a sac fly. How weird must it be for him to see his son playing for the same team, 29 years later?

    9) If I had a daughter, one of the last places on earth I’d want her to be would be handing water bottles to college football players on the sidelines during a game. Just an invitation for trouble; I see these girls there and I think there’s got to be a better way to earn your work-study money, as in, almost anything else.

    8) Baylor QB Bryce Petty cracked two vertebrae in his back Sunday against SMU; I read something on the Interweb that said “Petty’s back injury” like it was a pulled muscle. He cracked two freakin’ vertebrae!!!! I’m thinking that’s kind of serious.

    7) Central Florida changed QB’s at halftime of their game with Penn State in Ireland; the Holman kid who played in the second half was terrific, 1,000 times better than the starter, who undoubtedly is no longer the starter.

Coaching is funny, because some kids are gamers, they just play better when the bright lights go on, but you can’t find that out until they actually get in a game.

    6) Classic sandwich game for a young Tennessee Vols squad this week; coming off their Sunday night opening win against Utah State and with a trip to Oklahoma on deck, Tennessee hosts Arkansas State from the Sun Belt this weekend.

Normally, the talent disparity between the teams would be enough for the Vols, but sometimes young teams play to the level of their opponent, especially with a higher profile game on deck. Plus, seldom do college teams play on a short work wee- Tennessee’s game was Sunday, not Saturday.

    5) Wonder if it is a coincidence that Adam Dunn wears the same number 10 for the A’s that Dave Kingman did? Both low average guys with lot of power, though Dunn walks lot more than Kingman ever did. Dunn’s career on-base percentage is .365; highest OB% Kingman ever had in one season was .343.

    4) Weird college football game of the week: Colorado at UMass—think Ralphie the buffalo is making the trip? That’s a long road trip to play a poor team.

    3) Think Texas Longhorns have this week’s game with BYU circled on the schedule? BYU crushed the Longhorns 40-21 LY as 7-point underdogs, running ball down Texas’ throats 72 times for 550 yards. Yes, they had 550 rushing yards against Texas. Am guessing that was discussed in their weight room once or thrice this past winter/spring.

    2) Someone on ESPN suggested blowing off work Tuesday to watch the US-New Zealand basketball game; now no one likes blowing off work more than I do, but for that to happen, the game I want to watch would have to have a point spread of less than 30. These games haven't been very good so far, other than the first half of the game with Turkey, which has one NBA player.

    1) Apparently the European captain of the Ryder Cup team left Luke Donald off the team, in a semi-controversial move.

Quick question: All I know about the Ryder Cup is that it is broadcast on NBC, but wouldn’t it be cool if the Americans could add Donald to their team, just to add a little WWE-style drama to the event? Just askin’…..

See spot. See spot bet: This week's best spot bet opportunities

Spot bets are classic handicapping practices that have proven profitable no matter what sport you’re betting. Whether it’s a team looking past this week’s opponent, one coming off a hard-fought victory, or a rough patch of schedule, bettors can find value picking their spots.

      Lookahead spot

Tennessee got the performance it wanted out of the gate, shutting down Utah State 38-7 and easily covering as a 3.5-point home favorite Sunday. The Volunteers’ impressive debut convinced oddsmakers to instill them as 16-point favorites for Week 2’s tilt with Arkansas State, but could be giving ole Rocky Top too much credit.

After all, Tennessee has a huge non-conference game looming with Big 12 frontrunner Oklahoma in Week 3 and a massive SEC opener against Georgia in Week 4. Head coach Butch Jones could hold something back versus the Red Wolves, shortening up his playbook and resting his key players for the big games ahead on the schedule.

Arkansas State can put up points – winning 37-10 over FCS Montana State in Week 1 - and matches up well with UT’s speed, hanging the dark clouds of the “backdoor cover” all over this game.

      Letdown spot

The New York Giants ran the table during the preseason, going a perfect 5-0 SU and 4-0-1 ATS in the exhibition. But before Giants fans start booking their tickets to Arizona in February, they should pull back the curtain on what was a very misleading preseason for the G-Men.

According to Covers Expert Marc Lawrence, New York was out-first downed 101-89 to barely edge opponents in yardage 1571-1525. The biggest cause for concern was Eli Manning, who stumbled in his first snaps of rookie offensive coordinator Ben McAdoo’s new West Coast offense. He was just 21 of 45 for 185 total passing yards.

Head coach Tom Coughlin apparently wanted Kevin Gilbride instead of McAdoo but had to settle for the former Packers tight end coach. The Giants’ success in the preseason could be setting up for a huge letdown in Week 1 when it really matters. They could come up very short as 4.5-point dogs versus a high-power Detroit attack.

      Schedule spot

The Memphis Tigers will have to put on the coffee for their late-night matchup with UCLA in Week 2. The schedule sends the Tigers across the country for a 10 p.m. ET start in Los Angeles, where the Bruins will be wide awake at 8 p.m. local time. This one will wrap well after midnight, which could have plenty of Memphis players yawning on the sidelines during the fourth quarter.

The Tigers have only traveled to California twice before and have come away victorious in both trips. But the last Golden State tour took place in 1991, so those tans have long faded. Memphis thumped poor FCS Austin Peay 63-0 in Week 1, covering as a 38.5-point fave, and now gets +24 points at the Rose Bowl Saturday.

Head coach Justin Fuente had better start setting those internal clocks back because a late night coupled with the pounding of a bigger, strong UCLA team could give the Tigers with nightmares.

Game of the Day: Mariners at A's
                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                Seattle Mariners at Oakland A's (-121, 6.5)

A high-octane pitching matchup will take center stage when the Oakland Athletics host the Seattle Mariners on Wednesday in the finale of a three-game series. Seattle ace Felix Hernandez, a 13-game winner who is second in the American League with a 2.23 ERA, squares off against Oakland left-hander Jon Lester, a fellow 13-game winner who ranks fourth in the AL with a 2.55 ERA. Despite their gaudy numbers, each pitcher is attempting to halt a three-start winless drought.

Losers of five of their last six, the Athletics trail the first-place Los Angeles Angels by 4 1/2 games in the American League West while division rival Seattle is 1 1/2 games back of Detroit for the second wild card. Oakland has some reason to be encouraged, scoring 11 runs in the first two games of the series after mustering only four in a four-game sweep at the hands of the Angels. The Mariners are an AL-best 38-27 away from home entering the third of a seven-game road trip.

                TV:
3:35 p.m. ET, ROOT Sports (Seattle), CSN California (Oakland)

                LINE HISTORY:
Books opened the A's as -125 home favorites. That line has moved to -121. The total has held at 6.5.

                INJURY REPORT:
Mariners - CF Michael Saunders (Out indefinitely, oblique). A's - CF Coco Crisp (Doubtful, neck), RP Sean Doolittle (15-day DL, oblique).

                POWER RANKINGS:
                Mariners (-172), A's (-198)

                PITCHING MATCHUP:
Mariners RH Felix Hernandez (13-5, 2.23 ERA) vs. Athletics LH Jon Lester (13-9, 2.55)

Hernandez's recent swoon followed a stretch in which he set a major-league record with 16 consecutive starts of at least seven innings pitched and two earned runs or fewer allowed. He is coming off disastrous start, coughing up a career-high four homers among 10 hits in a loss to Washington. Fernandez surrended a season-high 11 hits in Oakland on May 7 but beat the Athletics with eight innings of two-run ball on July 11 to improve to 18-7 lifetime against them.

Lester has pitched better than Hernandez during his dry spell but has nothing to show for it after permitting a total of three earned runs and 11 hits over 13 innings in back-to-back starts against the Los Angeles Angels. Lester, who grew up just outside Seattle, is 4-3 with a 3.99 ERA in 10 career starts versus the Mariners - all with Boston. He's been outstanding in three home starts since joining Oakland, going 2-0 and yielding four runs in three turns.

                TRENDS:

                * Mariners are 13-3 in Hernandez's last 16 road starts vs. Athletics.
                * Mariners are 1-5 in their last six games with Iassogna behind home plate.
                * Athletics are 1-5 in their last six overall.
                * Under is 3-1-1 in Lester's last five starts overall.

                CONSENSUS:
Fifty-nine percent of wagers on Consensus are backing the A's.

The Mariners are 4-0 in his starts versus Oakland this season and the Cy Young candidate has a personal 3-0 record with a 2.43 ERA, allowing eight earned runs on 27 hits through 29 2/3 innings of work in those starts.

Oakland will counter with lefty Jon Lester and the is currently a -121 home fave for the game.

Braves have no luck with Davidson umpiring

The Atlanta Braves are 0-4 in the last games at Turner Field when Bob Davidson has been behind the plate calling balls and strikes.

Davidson will be in that role Wednesday as the the Braves host the Philadelphia Phillies.

The home team is 15-12 when Davidson is calling pitches this season, good enough for a 55.6 winning percentage.

Oddsmakers have the Braves as -175 faves on the moneyline, with the Phillies currently +161 dogs.

Pirates backers happy to see Kulpa umpiring

The Pittsburgh Pirates are 6-0 in their last six ball games with umpire Ron Kulpa working behind the plate.

Kulpa will be calling balls and strikes at Busch Stadium Wednesday afternoon as the Pirates visit the St. Louis Cardinals.

The umpire's stats show he skews toward the road team as visitors have posted a record of 15-12 in his games this season.

The Buccos are -110 road faves as they send Edinson Volquez to the bump. The Cardinals, +102 home dogs, counter with Shelby Miller.

                          Wednesday, September 3

                          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
MLB Mid-week betting cheat sheet: September for the dogs
                          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Here’s a comprehensive look at betting notes for the mid-week major-league games:

                          September For the 'Dogs

Underdogs have been a strong play through the first two days of September, going 7-6 SU Monday and 10-5 SU Tuesday. Big ‘dog payouts Tuesday included the Philadelphia Phillies (+156), who beat Atlanta 4-0, and the Houston Astros (+146), who upended the Los Angeles Angels 8-3.

                          One Giant Total

The San Francisco Giants (-140, 11) face their largest total of the season Tuesday as they conclude their three-game series in Colorado. The teams have combined for 38 runs through the first two games of the set, including Tuesday’s 12-7 Giants victory.

                          Buehrle a Big Over Play

Overs have been plentiful for Toronto Blue Jays lefty Mark Buehrle entering Thursday’s showdown with the host Tampa Bay Rays. Buehrle, who threw a perfect game against Tampa Bay in 2009, is 7-2 O/U over his last nine starts and 15-11-1 O/U for the season.

                          Pitching Notes

                          * Seattle ace Felix Hernandez will look to reverse a recent trend Wednesday as the Mariners (+112, 6.5) visit the Oakland Athletics. Hernandez, installed as an underdog for the first time since April 16, is 3-1-1 O/U in his last five starts after going 1-9 O/U in his previous 10.

                          * The Baltimore Orioles have been sensational whenever Chris Tillman takes the hill. Baltimore has won each of the right-hander’s last seven starts dating back to late-July; he gets the call Thursday night as the Orioles tangle with the visiting Cincinnati Reds.

                          Hitting Notes

                          * St. Louis Cardinals outfielder Matt Holliday has turned back the clock. The 34-year-old is hitting .346 with four home runs and 14 RBIs over the last seven days as he leads the Cardinals (+102, 8.5) into a Tuesday night encounter with the visiting Pittsburgh Pirates.

                          * Cleveland second baseman Jason Kipnis looks to improve his fortunes against Max Scherzer as the Indians host the Detroit Tigers on Thursday. Kipnis is just 5-for-28 lifetime against Scherzer, with one extra-base hit and 10 strikeouts.

                          Totals Streak

Kansas City Royals (2-8-2 O/U): The Royals have remained the surprise of the American League thanks to a pitching staff that has surrendered three runs or fewer in five of its last seven games. The recent Under streak has the Royals at 60-70-7 O/U for the season.

                          Prop of the Day

Bettors should consider the Giants as the last team to score (-115) in their game against the Rockies. Colorado has the worst ERA in the majors from the seventh inning on (5.41).

                          Injury Notes

*Atlanta Braves outfielder Justin Upton is out of the lineup Wednesday afternoon against Philadelphia (+175, 7.5) after leaving Tuesday’s game with a triceps contusion. The Braves are 2-1 SU, 2-0-1 O/U and +71 units this season without Upton, who leads the club with 26 homers.

*New York Yankees veteran Martin Prado left Tuesday’s game against Boston with a left hamstring injury and is out indefinitely pending an MRI. It will be the first missed game as a Yankee for Prado, who has multi-hit efforts in six of his last 10 games.

                          Weather Watch

*Fans at Kauffman Stadium will be treated to wind blowing out to left field at 13 mph for Wednesday’s game between host Kansas City (-171, 8) and Texas. The Royals haven’t played a game with a wind that strong out to left since 2011, when the teams combined for 15 runs and three homers.

                          Umpire Note of the Day

Under is 6-0 in umpire Mike Muchlinski’s last six games behind home plate involving the Mets. Muchlinski is calling balls and strikes for Wednesday’s game between New York (+103, 7) and the visiting Miami Marlins.

Hey Udog---one more point about that Tribe game--Do the powers that be in MLB really care about the integrity of the game anymore? Seems to me they should be making every effort to insure at least something of a level playing field. If they don't care, then why should I watch the games????..............
