NCAAF line watch: Irish backers best to wait until late

Each week during the college football season, we look at the NCAAF odds and tells you which spread to bet now, which one to bet later, and which total to watch as the week plays out.

    Spread to bet now

Fresno State Bulldogs at Utah Utes (-10.5)

Utah is currently a 10.5-point home favorite and I expect the money to come in on the Utes in this game. Utah cruised to an easy 56-14 home win over FCS Idaho State in its season opener. The Utes have a lot of momentum for this game and since they have a bye on deck, we can expect a prime effort in Week 2.

Fresno State was completely out-classed in their 52-13 loss to USC last week. It’s clear that the Bulldogs are not the same team that went 11-2 last season. Now they must play their second consecutive game on the road after taking a physical beating. This line will only go up, so lay the points with Utah now.

    Spread to wait on

Michigan Wolverines at Notre Dame Fighting Irish (-4.5)

Michigan and Notre Dame both won by impressive margins last week. The Wolverines beat Appalachian State 52-14 while the Fighting Irish beat Rice 48-17. The early money has come in on Michigan as the Wolverines are down to +4.5 after opening as +5.5 road underdogs. I expect continued line movement downward as the power ratings make this game right around a field goal spread.

Notre Dame is a much better team this season with the return of quarterback Everett Golson. The QB situation in South Bend was a mess last year, but with stability the Irish can run a balanced offense. Michigan has been stale over the last two years and this year doesn’t look any different. I expect the public to be on the underdog, so playing the Irish closer to kick off is the way to go.

    Total to watch

Michigan State Spartans at Oregon Ducks (56)

This game is a contrast in styles. Michigan State wins with defense and it plays ball control with its ability to run the ball consistently. Oregon wants to play as fast as possible, wearing down its opponent’s defense.

The early projected lines in Las Vegas have this total pegged at 56 points. Oregon is currently a 13-point favorite, so an opening number in the high 50s makes sense. Michigan State’s highest posted total last season was 54 points with 12 of its 14 games set at 48.5 or less.

Week One Review: Sumlin makes the difference at Texas A&M

College football is mostly about two things. Quarterbacks. And the Southeastern Conference.

Nowhere did those two themes intersect better than in the first game of the season -- Texas A&M at South Carolina.

College football moved on from the Johnny Manziel era, leaving his every off-field move and on-field gesture as a concern for the NFL. But he still had the gravitational pull of a black hole in the offseason, pulling every question about Texas A&M into this singularity: How could the Aggies possibly replace Johnny Football and still be relevant?

      It was the wrong question.

Give Manziel his due, but the immediate success of Texas A&M in the SEC had less to do with his improvisational skills and more to do with the man in charge of it all -- coach Kevin Sumlin. The question should have been: Have SEC foes figured out how to stop Sumlin?

Lesson No. 1 from the opening weekend of college football: Never doubt Sumlin's scheme.

He created a just-add-water Heisman candidate in sophomore Kenny Hill, who completed 44 of 60 passes for 511 yards, breaking the school single-game passing record of Johnny ... uh, what was that guy's name again?

Hill also threw for three touchdowns as he and the Aggies carved up the No. 9 Gamecocks 52-28.

Now, the opening weekend of the season always comes with a caveat -- avoid drawing too many conclusions based off one game. But the first impression screams that A&M's impressive performance wasn't a fluke.

Hill showed poise in the face of South Carolina's blitz. He is working behind an experienced offensive line, led by the team's next first-round left tackle -- Cedric Ogbuehi. Hill worked fast in the hurry-up offense and got the ball out quickly to an array of talented wideouts, including senior Malcome Kennedy and fab freshmen Ricky Seals-Jones and Speedy Noil. What we're saying is that the first-game numbers are sustainable.

Get used to the Aggies being back in the discussion in the wild SEC West and beyond. Their next four games are against Lamar, Rice, at SMU, and Arkansas. A&M should be 5-0 heading into an Oct. 4 game at Mississippi State, which is most definitely a team you don't want to sleep on.

Until then, just don't call the new quarterback Kenny Football. Perhaps Heis-Ken will do.

Five things we learned in week one

      1. This is a corollary to the Kevin Sumlin clause: Never, ever, underestimate a Rich Rodriguez offense. He lost All-American running back Ka'Deem Carey and quarterback B.J. Denker, returning a Pac-12-low 23.6 percent of his offense. In Arizona's first game, a 58-13 win over UNLV, the Wildcats rolled up a school-record 787 total yards, 425 coming off the arm of redshirt freshman Anu Solomon. This Thursday's game at UTSA, which opened with a 27-7 win at Houston, could be better than you think.

      2. Oklahoma State's defensive front is not good, it's great. Going against Florida State's best-in-the-nation offensive line, the Cowboys allowed just 106 rushing yards and had five tackles for loss, including two sacks from emerging sophomore star lineman Emmanuel Ogbah. After its close-call loss to No. 1 Florida State, young Oklahoma State has time to build before taking on a back-loaded schedule.

      3. UCLA's 2014 potential problem is its 2013 Achilles' heel. Playing without two injured starters on the offensive line, the Bruins scored only one offensive touchdown in a 28-20 win at Virginia. The Cavs overwhelmed UCLA with their blitzes, coming up with 11 tackles for loss, including five sacks. Good news: UCLA might get back center Jake Brendel (knee) and left tackle Simon Goines (ankle) very soon. "I know that there is going to be a lot of concern about our offensive line, and it's warranted at this point," coach Jim Mora said. "Those of us that know we have a good group know that we just need to play better."

      4. Senior quarterback Blake Sims got more than a courtesy start at Alabama. Everyone expected Florida State transfer Jacob Coker to win the job, but Sims' four years in the system trumped Coker's three months on campus. Sims was 24-for-33 for 250 yards, with no touchdowns and one interception, in a 33-23 win over West Virginia. It was a respectable effort that should earn encores in the next two games against weaklings Florida Atlantic and Southern Miss.

      5. It's going to be a wild ride in 2014. OK, we already knew that. But when the two teams most favored to get to the first title game of the College Football Playoff era -- Florida State and Alabama -- each struggle in openers against unranked opponents ... it's a clear sign that crazy twists and turns, and breathtaking freefalls, await.

      Five important returns

      1. Notre Dame quarterback Everett Golson. Returning from academic exile, Golson looked as good as the new FieldTurf in Notre Dame Stadium, passing for 295 yards and running for 41. He had two long on-the-mark touchdown passes that each traveled about 60 yards in the air. It's in the DNA of coach Brian Kelly to fling the ball all over the yard, and Golson's arm and experience give him a chance to get back to those roots.

      2. Texas quarterback David Ash. Last season's concussion problems, followed by a spring foot injury, put Ash on the long road back. If the Longhorns are to have any success in coach Charlie Strong's debut, Ash has to stay healthy and be effective. He was sporadic in a 38-7 win over North Texas, completing 19 of 34 passes for 190 yards, and taking a couple of big hits that had Burnt Orange Nation holding its breath. Honorable mention: Texas linebacker Jordan Hicks, coming off an Achilles injury, made his first career interception. He is the glue guy of the defense.

      3. Arizona receiver Austin Hill. The senior, who missed all of last season because of an ACL injury, came back in style with a 92-yard catch-and-run for a touchdown on the first play of the second half against UNLV. He stiff-armed a defender after the catch to gain the separation he needed to race in untouched the rest of the way. Hill leads one of the deepest groups of receivers in the country.

      4. Maryland receivers Stefon Diggs/Deon Long. The Terps should have one of the best receiving corps in the conference -- that's now the Big Ten, remember -- led by Diggs and Long, who returned to the starting lineup in a rout of James Madison after rehabbing together from broken legs suffered at midseason last year. Diggs had five catches for 53 yards and returned a kickoff 59 yards. Long made two catches for 48 yards, including a 41-yard score.

      5. Alabama offensive coordinator Lane Kiffin. Fired as USC's head coach during last season, Kiffin was back on the sideline, calling plays under the watchful eye of Nick Saban. The Tide gained 538 yards against West Virginia, which is good, but Bama can do better. Alabama must stop embracing the "Dinosaur Age" of offense -- Saban's words -- and use more of the fast-paced, no-huddle attack that sparked the Tide late in the second half and helped get quarterback Blake Sims in rhythm.

      Five players to watch

      1. Georgia running back Todd Gurley. The junior had 198 yards rushing and a 100-yard kickoff return in a win over 12th-ranked Clemson. He'll end the two-year drought of no running back in the first round of the NFL Draft.

      2. Penn State quarterback Christian Hackenberg. The sophomore threw for 454 yards and directed the game-winning drive that ended in a field goal in a 26-24 win over UCF in Dublin. Your No. 1 pick in the 2016 NFL Draft ...

      3. Michigan receiver Devin Funchess. Now wearing Michigan's famed No. 1 jersey and no longer mis-labeled as a tight end, Funchess (6-5, 230) is still a matchup nightmare. He caught seven passes for 95 yards and three scores vs. Appalachian State.

      4. BYU quarterback Taysom Hill. He ran for 1,344 yards last season, the question being whether he could improve his 53.9 completion percentage. Well, he was 28-for-36 in the opening win over UConn. This week: At Texas.

      5. Oklahoma State all-purpose back Tyreek Hill. It took one game to make the junior college transfer the nation's most exhilarating player. The fastest man in college football posted 278 all-purpose yards, and his value as a decoy made the Cowboys' offense all the more unpredictable.

      Five best Week 2 games

      1. Michigan State at Oregon, Saturday, 6:30 p.m. ET., FOX. Thanks to its backfield depth, Oregon moved Byron Marshall to an all-purpose role in the opener, and he responded with 89 yards rushing and 138 yards on eight receptions over South Dakota. His versatility is worth watching against the Spartans' stout defense in a game with major College Football Playoff implications.

      2. USC at Stanford, USC at Stanford, Saturday, 3:30 p.m. ET, ABC. Steve Sarkisian's new-to-USC up-tempo offense was an instant success, with the Trojans running a school-record 105 plays en route to 701 yards in a laugher against Fresno State. Stanford yawns. If the Cardinal can handle Oregon's attack, it won't be awed by USC's.

      3. Michigan at Notre Dame, Saturday, 7:30 p.m. ET., NBC. A night game in South Bend wraps up this historic series until at least 2020 -- probably much longer, given the rhetoric on both sides. Enjoy while you can.

      4. Virginia Tech at Ohio State, Saturday, 8 p.m. ET, ESPN. The Buckeyes could end up being just fine with redshirt freshman J.T. Barrett at quarterback, although his inexperience and shaky play from the offensive line led to conservative play-calling against Navy. A fast, physical Hokies defense, led by defensive tackle Luther Maddy, cornerback Kendall Fuller and safety Kyshoen Jarrett, will require more creativity from Urban Meyer.

      5. East Carolina at South Carolina, Saturday, 7 p.m. ET, ESPNU. The Gamecocks have to show resiliency after the humbling loss to A&M, while the Pirates are looking for big-bowl legitimacy, fueled by the prolific pass-catch combo of Shane Carden and Justin Hardy.

Senior Analyst Rob Rang's five takeaways on how prospects performed in their season openers. Players listed chronologically by game time this week, including position, school, year (Height, weight and current NFLDraftScout.com overall rating and by position).

      1. QB Jameis Winston, Florida State (6-4, 235, #6/#2)

Winston's stats in Saturday night's victory over Oklahoma State included two interceptions, but that doesn't tell the full story. Both picks were thrown into single coverage, with defenders making spectacular plays on the ball. While Winston did stare down his targets, he generally makes excellent decisions with the ball and did so throughout this game, peppering the Cowboys with well-thrown short and intermediate routes and driving strikes down the alleys. He showed good touch on traditional deep balls, including a pair of 50-plus-yard completions in the first half.

      2. WR Kevin White, West Virginia (6-3, 209, #296/#36)

White matched Alabama's preseason All-American Amari Cooper catch for catch, showing impressive hand-eye coordination and leaping ability to haul in several contested throws. The 6-foot-3, 209 pound White possesses a legitimate NFL frame with broad shoulders and good overall musculature. White used his size to overpower defenders on occasion, breaking tackles to gain yardage after the catch. He also showed agility and strength to gain a free release, smooth acceleration to push corners deep and the burst out of his breaks to gain separation.

      3. QB Brett Hundley, UCLA (6-3, 227, #19/#3))

Hundley was held without a touchdown pass against Virginia. He did score on a six-yard scamper and completed 20 of 33 passes for 242 yards and showed composure down the stretch, rifling deep passes to the sidelines. And when protected, Hundley generally threw the ball well. He showed improved poise in the pocket from a year ago, scanning the field and occasionally stepping up in the pocket before delivering confident passes. He failed to look off defenders, at times, which contributed to three of his passes being deflected at the line of scrimmage.

      4. RB Paul James, Rutgers (6-0, 210, #16 RB in 2016)

James, a 6-foot, 210-pound junior, routinely ran through arm tackles in Rutgers' victory over Washington State in Seattle, showing impressive leg drive, forward lean and enough burst to gain yardage in chunks. He lowers his shoulders on contact and spins off hits, keeping his feet moving and eyes searching for daylight. He showed better acceleration than his frame would indicate, breaking free for a 56-yard gain.

      5. LT Cedric Ogbuehi, Texas A&M (6-5, 300, #3/#1)

A boisterous crowd at South Carolina on Thursday seemed to contribute to Ogbuehi getting an occasional late start. Rather than panic and lunge at his opponent, Ogbuehi showed off his rare skill set, accelerating while turning his shoulders to remain square to the pass rusher before extending his vine-like arms to latch on. Ogbuehi's agility and reach make him reliable in pass protection. He also showed quickness and agility in the running game and drove his assignment off the ball to clear the lane for A&M's first touchdown of the season, a 1-yard plunge off left tackle by Tra Carson.

Mid-Major Money: Big profits from NCAAF small conferences

              Team to watch: Louisiana-Monroe Warhawks

              This week: -14 vs. Idaho

The Warhawks are coming off an impressive 17-10 victory over Wake Forest of the ACC last Thursday. They limited Wake to a mere 94 total yards of offense and won the time of possession battle by almost 11 minutes, despite forcing just one turnover. Junior safety Mitch Lane was named the Sun Belt Defensive Player of the Week after returning an interception 31 yards for a touchdown at the Demon Deacons’ expense.

On Saturday, Louisiana-Monroe is going up against an Idaho squad that unexpectedly has no games under its belt in 2014. The Vandals were supposed to pay a visit to Florida last weekend, but that contest was postponed due to severe thunderstorms. As such, they have not yet been able to tinker with an expected dual-quarterback rotation of redshirt freshman Matt Linehan and former starter Chad Chalich. Those two QBs will be without standout receiver Dezmon Epps, who was dismissed from the team this offseason.

Team to beware: Kent State Golden Flashes

This week: +3 vs. South Alabama

These are trying times for the Golden Flashes, whose season is off to a tough start both on and off the field. Starting center Jason Bitsko was found dead in his apartment last month and it remains to be seen if Kent State will recover. The team kicked off its 2014 campaign last weekend and lost as a 3-point home favorite to Ohio via a 17-14 decision.

The Golden Flashes were without 2013 leading rusher Trayion Durham and he’s questionable for Saturday’s game due to a foot injury. How bad did it get in Durham’s absence? Kent State rushed for 31 yards on 22 carries against Ohio.

South Alabama, which is contesting its season opener, was 5-0 ATS in its last five outings of last season. Kent State, meanwhile, is 0-6-1 ATS in its last seven home games and 1-5 ATS in its last six overall.

              Total team: Nevada Wolf Pack

This week: 63 vs. Washington State

The Under is 7-0 in Nevada’s last seven overall (its game last week against Southern Utah went Under the total by a half point), but that may be about to change. That’s because the Wolf Pack are going up against Washington State Friday. Mike Leach’s Cougars lost to Rutgers 41-38 last Thursday even though Connor Halliday completed 40 of 56 passes for 532 yards and five touchdowns.

On the defensive side of the ball, Washington State is a serious question mark. Pieces are rotating all over the place, with depth chart changes at the top, bottom, and everywhere in between being made at tackle, end, linebacker and cornerback.

Nevada’s Jerico Richardson (13 catches, 177 yards vs. Southern Utah) and Co. should be able to capitalize on this game of musical chairs.

Game of the Day: Arizona at Texas-San Antonio
                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Arizona Wildcats at Texas-San Antonio Roadrunners (+7, 56)

Arizona put on a dynamic offensive display in its season opener, but the Wildcats' second contest appears as if it will be anything but a cake walk. The Wildcats hit the road for the first time Thursday when they take on Texas-San Antonio, which is also coming off an impressive win in Week 1. Arizona rolled to a 58-13 victory over UNLV on Friday behind a school-record 787 yards of total offense, including 425 passing yards by Anu Solomon.

“Our guys competed well and kept their poise,” Wildcats coach Rich Rodriguez told reporters. “It was a good win and we’ll learn from it. We will get a quick turnaround and get ready for the next one.” Arizona, which registered two 100-yard rushers and two 100-yard receivers Friday, is trying to start 2-0 for the sixth time in the last seven years. Meanwhile, UTSA's football program has only been in existence since 2011 but the Roadrunners are coming off one of the biggest wins in school history.

                    TV:
                    8 p.m. ET, Fox Sports 1.

                    LINE HISTORY:
Oddsmakers opened the Wildcats at 7-point road favorites and the total at 56.

                    INJURY REPORT:
Arizona - DL Reggie Gilbert (questionable, foot). UTSA - T Josh Walker (questionable, undisclosed).

                    ABOUT ARIZONA (1-0 SU, 1-0 ATS, 1-0 O/U):
Solomon, a redshirt freshman, also ran for 50 yards last week as part of a 353-yard rushing attack for the Wildcats, who were led by Terris Jones-Grigsby (124 yards) and Nick Wilson (104). With Austin Hill (110 yards) and Samajie Grant (101) going over the century mark through the air, it marked the first time in school history that Arizona had two 100-yard rushers and a pair of 100-yard receivers in the same game. “We have the ability to be a good offense this year. We just need to carry the confidence like we do," said Hill, who had a 92-yard TD catch-and-run in his first game in 20 months following knee surgery.

                    ABOUT TEXAS-SAN ANTONIO (1-0 SU, 1-0 ATS, 0-1 O/U):
The Roadrunners opened their season with a resounding 27-7 road victory against Houston, holding the Cougars scoreless until 1:04 remained. David Glasco II ran for a pair of touchdowns and the UTSA defense forced six turnovers, including four interceptions. One negative for the Roadrunners is they committed 14 penalties for 115 yards - a stat they surely will need to clean up if they are going to upset the Wildcats.

                    TRENDS:

                    * Under is 5-0 in Roadrunners last five games overall.
                    * Wildcats are 4-1 ATS in their last five non-conference games.

                    * Over is 4-1 in Wildcats last five road games.

                    CONSENSUS:
According to Consensus, 78 percent of wagers are backing the Arizona Wildcats.

Game of the Day: Pittsburgh at Boston College
                        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Pittsburgh Panthers at Boston College Eagles (+4, 49)

Pittsburgh and Boston College used rushing performances that connected them to their glorious pasts en route to easy season-opening wins last weekend. The former Big East rivals try to do the same Friday when they face each other for the first time as ACC foes as BC hosts the Panthers. Florida transfer Tyler Murphy threw for 173 yards and rushed for 118 versus Massachusetts, becoming the first Eagles quarterback since Doug Flutie in 1984 to rush for more than 100 yards.

The Eagles generated 338 of their 511 total yards on the ground in a 30-7 triumph – their first game since the graduation of Heisman Trophy finalist Andre Williams, who became only the 16th player in NCAA history to rush for more than 2,000 yards last year. Pittsburgh’s own bruising back – 250-pound James Conner – ripped FCS Delaware for 153 yards and four touchdowns in one half during a 62-0 victory, part of 409-yard rushing effort that was the most for the school since the 1976 national championship season. The Eagles and Panthers, who met every year from 1993-2004, resume their rivalry after a 10-year break.

                        7 p.m. ET, ESPN.

                        LINE HISTORY:
Boston College opened as 4.5-point home dogs and have been bet to +4. The total has held steady at 49.

                        INJURY REPORT:
Pittsburgh - WR Tyler Boyd probable Friday (finger). Boston College - OL Harris Williams out Friday (ankle).

                        ABOUT PITTSBURGH (1-0, 1-0 ATS, 1-0 O/U):
In addition to posting their biggest margin of victory since 1913, the Panthers outgained the Blue Hens 501-57 en route to their first shutout in nine years. However, not all the news was positive for Pittsburgh as receiver Tyler Boyd, who set school freshman records for receptions and receiving yards last fall, left in the second quarter after dislocating a finger on his left hand on a punt return. Boyd’s probable status for Friday means more of the offensive load could fall on sophomore quarterback Chad Voytik, who went 10-for-13 for 84 yards and two TDs in his first career start.

                        ABOUT BOSTON COLLEGE (1-0, 1-0 ATS, 0-1 O/U):
The Eagles were slightly less proficient on the ground (338 yards on 61 attempts) than the Panthers last week, but turned to Murphy as well as running backs Tyler Rouse (87 yards) and Myles Willis (57) to replace the production Williams usually accounted for last season. "We're not just one back anymore. All of us are coming and the quarterback's running, too,” Willis told the Boston Herald. Josh Bordner, who served as the backup quarterback over the last three seasons, fared well in his debut as a receiver, finishing with four catches for 81 yards and a touchdown.

                        TRENDS:

                        * Home team is 4-1 ATS in the last five meetings.
                        * Under is 5-2 in the last seven meetings.
                        * Panthers are 0-4 ATS in their last four games following a SU win.
                        * Over is 5-0 in the Eagles last five home games.

                        CONSENSUS:
Almost 62 percent of wagers are backing Pittsburgh at -4.5, with almost 61 percent of total bets on the under 49.

Upset alert: Five potential college football Week 2 shockers

College football Week 2 is packed with upset potential. We breakdown five matchups and ring the outright upset alarm, rankings just how probable these stunners could be Saturday.

Old Dominion Monarchs at North Carolina State Wolfpack (-17)

Moneyline odds: Old Dominion +875/NC State -850

North Carolina State struggled mightily against Georgia Southern in Week 1 but did rally in the fourth quarter for the win. With senior Taylor Heinicke at quarterback, the Monarchs can flat out score points and that's an area that the Wolfpack struggled in with new quarterback Jacoby Brissett.

                          Likelihood of upset: Small

Gardner-Webb Bulldogs at Wake Forest Demon Deacons (-22)

                          Moneyline odds: Gardner-Webb +975/Wake Forest -1,975

The Demon Deacons gained just 94 yards in their season opener and scored 10 points against UL Monroe. Now they’re a 24.5-point favorite in Week 2. Gardner-Webb lost by 10 to Furman. Keep in mind that Wake's biggest victory from 2013 was 24 points (over Presbyterian and Maryland) and that they only scored more than 24 points four times in 2013. This feeling is less about confidence in Gardner-Webb and more about a lack of confidence in Wake's offense.

                          Likelihood of upset: Medium

Northern Illinois Huskies at Northwestern Wildcats (-7)

Moneyline odds: Northern Illinois +243/Northwestern -285

In Week 1, NIU won by 52 over Presbyterian while Northwestern lost to Cal by seven. Northern Illinois may not have Jordan Lynch anymore but it has a fantastic running attack and Northwestern will struggle to stop it. All of the offseason hoopla about Northwestern unionizing may have divided the team and interrupted its focus. We will likely find that out after this game.

                          Likelihood of upset: Large

Colorado State Rams at Boise State Broncos (-10.5)

Moneyline odds: Colorado State +330/Boise State -410

The Broncos fell flat against Ole Miss in Week 1. They hung in for three quarters and then got blown out in the fourth. Colorado State beat in-state rival Colorado behind an aggressive running game that featured former Alabama RB Dee Hart and Treyous Jarrells (both ran for over 100 yards).

                          Likelihood of upset: XL

Western Kentucky Hilltoppers at Illinois Fighting Illini (-6)

Moneyline odds: Western Kentucky +195/Illinois -235

No Bobby Petrino, no problem for WKU in Week 1 as the Hilltoppers led the FBS in passing yards with 569 in a 59-31 rout of Bowling Green (the 2013 MAC Champions). Illinois struggled to get past Youngstown State, needing 21 points in the fourth quarter to win by 11. A lot of pressure is on new Illini quarterback Wes Lunt to put the team on his back.

                          Likelihood of upset: Jumbo

Six NCAAF teams that impressed the oddsmakers the most

You never get a second chance to make a first impression - and boy did these programs turn some heads in their Week 1 debuts. So much so, oddsmakers were forced to recognize those opening efforts and seriously adjust their odds to win the college football national championship.

Here are six of the most impressive squads from Week 1 and how they look going into their next meeting:

Georgia Bulldogs (18/1 to 10/1 to win national title)

After playing Clemson to a tie in the first half, Georgia made some halftime adjustments, the defense played lights out and the running game systematically took apart the Clemson defense.

Up next: -3 at South Carolina (Sept. 13)

This game is in Columbia and the Gamecocks have won the last two tilts at Williams-Brice Stadium. I expect Steve Spurrier to have his squad ready to go but keep an eye on the health of RB Mike Davis, as he could be the difference in this game.

                            Louisville Cardinals (300/1 to 100/1)

Louisville's debut in the ACC was very successful, beating Miami by 18 points (- 5.5). New quarterback Will Gardner played very well (20 for 28 for 206 with two TDs) as did RB Dominique Brown (33 carries for 143 yards and one TD).

Up next: -36.5 vs. Murray State

FCS Murray State is the next opponent on a short week for Louisville but keep an eye on the Week 3 game at Virginia. The Cavs played very well against UCLA and could be a tougher matchup than bettors thought before the season started.

                            LSU Tigers (20/1 to 15/1)

The Tigers didn't look particularly great against Wisconsin but they showed a lot of heart by coming back from a large deficit. Louisiana State is very young and should get better each week.

Up next: -34 vs. Sam Houston State

Another FCS matchup on the board and then the Tigers have a date with Louisiana-Monroe, who knocked off Wake Forest in Week 1. That one has the ability to be closer than anticipated.

Notre Dame Fighting Irish (100/1 to 60/1)

Everett Golson is back and looks like the type of player that could put the Irish on his back. He threw for 295 yards and two touchdowns while adding three rushing touchdowns versus Rice. With Golson, they are a completely different team.

                            Up next: -3.5 vs. Michigan

The line has actually moved down from at 5.5 the past week. The last time these two teams played in South Bend, the Irish won 13-6. A lot of action seems to be going the way of Michigan right now. But loyal Golden Domers will come in strong Saturday morning.

                            Texas A&M Aggies (100/1 to 20/1)

Johnny Who? Kenny Hill had a breakout game for Texas A&M and Kevin Sumlin, as the Aggies shocked South Carolina in Week 1.

                            Up next: -49 vs. Lamar

The Aggies schedule sets up very nicely for them as they play Rice and SMU after they dispatch of Lamar and then ease into the SEC West schedule with Arkansas. With the amount of talent the Aggies have on offense they will face some lofty spreads the next three weeks.

                            USC Trojans (30/1 to 20/1)

Despite the distractions prior to the game, the Trojans came out and ran roughshod over Fresno State.

                            Up next: +2.5 at Stanford

Since last week the line has moved in favor of USC. Bettors may want to pump the breaks on USC a little bit in this game. The Trojans haven't been Stanford on the road since 2008 and are just 2-7 ATS in their last nine clashes with the Cardinal.

Utes have six starters back on both sides of ball, a junior QB with 22 starts- they're 6-11 as favorites in last three seasons. Oregon lost its starting LT for season during camp; they're 10-11-1 as home favorites in last three seasons. Ducks ran punt back for TD last week; hard to tell much about either team's wins vs I-AA squads last week.

Georgia Tech passed for 282 yards in walkover vs I-AA team last week; curious to see if they throw it in a competitive game. Tech is 8-4-1 as road favorite under Johnson; they lost 7 starters on defense from LY, have soph QB. Tulane is 8-2 as a home dog under Johnson, but that was in Superdome.

Michigan won six of last eight games with Notre Dame, but Golson was at QB in 13-6 win here two years ago, only time Wolverines didn't beat spread in last five tries as series underdog. Texas QB Ash (concussion) is out here; Longhorns are down five players since last week, between injuries and suspensions- they're 12-16 as home favorites since 2009. Texas doesn't have any experience at QB, with Ash out.

San Diego State/North Carolina both dispatched I-AA foes last week, as UNC had tougher game, leading only 21-15 at half of game that ended up 56-29. Tar Heels have 15 starters back, three on OL with QB who has 7 college starts- they're 9-4 as home favorites under Fedora. Aztecs have only 4 starters back on defense but have three starters back on OL and a senior QB with 12 starts- they're 10-5 as road underdogs since '09, 5-3 under Long.
