        • Preview: Giants (82-71) at Dodgers (88-67)
          Game: 1
          Venue: Dodger Stadium
          Date: September 22, 2014 10:10 PM EDT

Unless they pull off a three-game sweep in Los Angeles, the San Francisco Giants likely won't have enough to overtake the Dodgers in the NL West.

The Giants, though, still have an excellent chance to join their rivals in the postseason and could clinch that spot with a couple more victories.

Jake Peavy will try to push his club a step closer by winning a career-high fifth consecutive start Monday night in a stadium where he's had lots of success in the past.

Los Angeles (89-67) is 4 1/2 games ahead in the division after an 8-5 win at the Chicago Cubs on Sunday and San Francisco's 8-2 loss in San Diego, which finished off a three-game sweep. The Giants (84-71) have seven games remaining while the Dodgers, whose magic number in the division is three, have six.

"I want to win out. I want to have the best record in the National League. That would say something about our team. The home-field advantage is important," outfielder Matt Kemp told MLB's official website.

San Francisco's magic number for clinching a playoff berth, however, is also three after Milwaukee's 1-0 loss in Pittsburgh on Sunday. The Giants and Pirates, who have identical records, are 4 1/2 games ahead of the Brewers, though Pittsburgh has the tiebreaker for home-field advantage in a potential wild-card game between the clubs.

"The bottom line is we need to win some games," pitcher Ryan Vogelsong said. "Everybody knows what we're playing for and everybody knows what's at stake. You prepare the best you can and go out and see what happens."

Peavy (6-4, 2.16 ERA) has boosted his club by going 6-1 with a 1.13 ERA in his last seven starts. He's yielded four runs - two earned - in 27 innings in his four-game win streak and gave up one in 7 2-3 innings in a 2-1 victory at Arizona on Tuesday.

The right-hander allowed four runs in six innings in his only start against the Dodgers this season, a 4-3 loss July 27, but is 6-0 with a 2.51 ERA in his last nine starts in Los Angeles.

He's 3-0 with a 1.31 ERA in his last three road games this season.

The Dodgers chose to give Dan Haren an extra day of rest so he could start this game instead of Sunday's series finale in Chicago. Los Angeles got by with Jamey Wright throwing just two innings in a spot start.

Dodgers starters have failed to make it past the fifth inning in seven consecutive games and posted an 8.88 ERA in 25 1-3 innings. The team's bullpen has put up a 5.97 ERA while being forced to go 34 2-3 innings.

Haren (13-11, 4.14) will try to give his fatigued teammates a lift by bouncing back from his worst performances in the last month. He was charged with five runs over five innings in a 10-4 loss in Colorado on Tuesday after going 3-0 with a 0.69 ERA in his prior four starts.

Haren will face San Francisco for the first time this season. The right-hander gave up one run in six innings in his most recent matchup, a 4-3 loss for Washington on Aug. 15, 2013.

Kemp, batting .340 with eight homers and 25 RBIs in his last 24 games, is hitting .371 with five homers and 16 RBIs in his last 19 against San Francisco. He had two singles in three at_bats against Peavy in July.

Yasiel Puig, batting .425 in his last nine contests, is 14 for 35 (.400) in his last eight against the Giants but is 0 for 5 lifetime versus Peavy. Angel Pagan is 5 for 8 against Haren in his career but he (back) and Michael Morse (oblique) are doubtful for this series.

          • Preview: Angels (95-60) at Athletics (85-69)
            Game: 1
            Venue: O.co Coliseum
            Date: September 22, 2014 10:05 PM EDT

Already assured of a postseason berth, the Los Angeles Angels will play a major role in determining whether the Oakland Athletics join them.

Jeff Samardzija is certainly doing his part to get the A's into the playoffs.

Samardzija and the A's attempt to take another step toward securing a wild-card spot as they open a three-game set with the visiting Angels on Monday night.

Oakland (85-70) has seven games left to clinch a playoff spot and earn home-field advantage for the wild-card game on Sept. 30. However, those races may not be decided until this weekend since the A's hold the first wild-card spot by just a half-game over Kansas City and two over Seattle.

The winner of the wild-card game could end up facing the Angels (96-60) in the division series, and Los Angeles will have a say in which teams meet in that one-game playoff. After visiting Oakland, the Angels conclude the regular season with a three-game series in Seattle.

They've held the A's to eight runs and a .188 average while winning five straight matchups, but they're 1-5 at Oakland this season.

Samardzija (4-5, 3.13 ERA) has been victimized by poor run support over his last four starts. The right-hander has a 1.50 ERA during that stretch, but is 0-2 since he's been backed by five total runs and one or none in three of those games, including a 2-0 road defeat to the Angels on Aug. 30.

Samardzija held the hosts to one earned run and four hits with nine strikeouts in eight innings, while the A's could only muster three singles off eight Los Angeles pitchers.

Things haven't been much better over the last two starts, as Samardzija has struck out 16 in 15 scoreless innings while getting two total runs of support and watching a pair of save opportunities blown.

"No time to pout. No time to feel sorry for yourself," Samardzija said. "That's just the way it goes."

Oakland scoring nine runs during a 1-4 stretch, and nearly matched it after Josh Donaldson's third hit resulted in a two-run, walkoff homer in Sunday's 8-6, 10-inning win over Philadelphia.

"Those are the moments I always want to be in," Donaldson said after tying Matt Stairs (1999), Dave Kingman (1986) and Reggie Jackson (1971) for the franchise record of three walkoff homers in a season.

Scoring may be at a premium for Oakland since the Angels are turning to C.J. Wilson (13-9, 4.42), who is 5-0 with a 2.79 ERA over his last eight starts against the A's - 4-0 with a 2.56 ERA in five visits to Oakland.

The left-hander yielded one run in 6 1-3 innings there Aug. 23.

He enters this meeting with a 2.45 ERA while winning three straight starts, and his latest effort helped clinch the AL West for the Angels. Wilson allowed one hit with seven strikeouts in seven innings of Wednesday's 5-0 win over the Mariners.

This time, he can move the Angels closer to home-field advantage throughout the postseason, a chase the Angels lead by 2 1/2 game over Baltimore.

Manager Mike Scioscia, however, isn't ready to risk injury for that cause. He pulled second baseman Howie Kendrick late in Sunday's 2-1 loss to Texas due to hamstring tightness.

"We're trying to win ballgames," Scioscia said. "We definitely want to try to get that best overall record ... but we're going to have to be sensitive to the needs of every individual player, and that's going to take a precedent over trying to push them too hard to where some of these guys break."

            • Preview: White Sox (71-83) at Tigers (85-69)
              Game: 1
              Venue: Comerica Park
              Date: September 22, 2014 7:08 PM EDT

The Detroit Tigers could have had more breathing room in the AL Central had they taken better advantage of their season series against the weaker teams in their division.

They'll look to improve upon a mediocre record versus the Chicago White Sox on Monday night in the opener of a three-game set at Comerica Park.

The Tigers (86-69) lost 5-2 Sunday in Kansas City, squandering a chance to sweep the second-place Royals. However, two wins in the three-game set pushed their lead in the AL Central to 1 1/2 games and finished 13-6 against their closest pursuers.

They've still won nine of 13 while averaging 5.2 runs, with J.D. Martinez and Torii Hunter both swinging hot bats. Martinez has batted .577 during a seven-game hitting streak, while Hunter is 13 for 32 while hitting safely in seven straight.

Hunter has also hit .462 during a separate seven-game streak against the White Sox.

Despite being in position to win its fourth straight division title, Detroit hasn't looked the part against the White Sox - the teams have split 16 games. The Tigers are 3-4 at home, with their relievers getting charged with two of those losses while posting a 9.31 ERA.

Detroit will conclude its season with four home games versus last-place Minnesota, a team it's 7-8 against.

"Hopefully we'll come home and it'll get loud," Hunter said. "It's going to be fun. It shouldn't be hard to get pumped up. If you don't have that adrenaline now you're not human. You should check your pulse."

Jose Abreu has been one of the biggest reasons Chicago has been competitive against Detroit. He has hit .433 with five home runs and 13 RBIs in 16 games against the Tigers, and he also owns a .500 on-base percentage over his last nine overall.

However, the White Sox also had Adam Dunn - now with Oakland - for 12 games against Detroit, in which he had five home runs and 10 RBIs.

Chicago's 10-5 win at Tampa Bay on Sunday was just its fourth in 15 road games. Former Tiger Avisail Garcia was 3 for 5 with two home runs and has hit .340 with 11 RBIs over his last 11 matchups with his former club.

Rookies will get the starting nod for both teams, with Detroit's Kyle Lobstein (1-0, 3.58 ERA) making his first start since not recording a decision in a 5-4 win over Cleveland on Sept. 13, when he allowed four runs in five innings.

"He was fine," manager Brad Ausmus told MLB's official website. "He wasn't as much down in the zone as he had been in his previous starts."

Chris Bassitt (0-1, 5.29) had a difficult time in the White Sox's 7-5 win at Kansas City on Tuesday, needing 94 pitches to get through 3 2-3 innings while allowing three runs and four walks. He took an 8-4 loss to Detroit in his big-league debut Aug. 30, giving up five runs over 6 1-3 innings.

              • Preview: Royals (84-69) at Indians (81-73)
                Game: 1
                Venue: Progressive Field
                Date: September 22, 2014 7:05 PM EDT

The Cleveland Indians' chances at a second straight playoff appearance seemed all but gone last week.

They could find themselves in the thick of the hunt again after Monday night, when they open a three-game series with the visiting Kansas City Royals after completing a suspended game from last month.

The Indians (81-74) were five games out of a wild-card spot after a 3-1 loss in Houston on Sept. 15, their fourth straight defeat. They've since won five of six to pull within 3 1/2 games of the Royals (84-70), and could be 2 1/2 back when Monday's originally scheduled contest begins.

These clubs will first resume a game that was suspended in Kansas City in the bottom of the 10th on Aug. 31 with Cleveland leading 4-2.

"We know what's at stake," said Michael Bourn, who was 3 for 5 in Sunday's 7-2 win at Minnesota.

The Indians lead the season series 8-7 and have received big contributions from Michael Brantley and Carlos Santana. Brantley, who is 22 for 49 during a 12-game hitting streak, has hit .392 in his last 11 matchups with Kansas City, and Santana has seven home runs with 15 RBIs in the series.

Cleveland has limited opponents to 13 runs during its 5-1 stretch and could get another stingy performance from Carlos Carrasco (8-5, 2.65 ERA) on the hill. Carrasco is 5-1 with a 1.17 ERA in eight starts since rejoining the rotation.

He struck out a career-high 12 in his third career complete game in a 2-0 win at Houston on Wednesday, throwing a two-hitter and joining Sandy Koufax as the only pitchers to strike out 12 on 98 pitches or fewer in a shutout.

The right-hander was 0-3 with a 6.95 ERA in four April starts before moving to the bullpen.

"They put me back in the rotation and gave me the opportunity," Carrasco said. "I don't want to let it pass. I have a different mentality."

Carrasco is 2-3 with a 5.26 ERA in 11 games - six starts - versus Kansas City. He owns a 2.92 ERA in the last six meetings, though five of those appearances came in relief.

The Royals (84-70) are 1 1/2 games in front of Seattle for the second wild-card spot after avoiding a sweep Sunday with a 5-2 win over Detroit.

"Today's game shows that we're not going away," manager Ned Yost said.

Billy Butler was 2 for 4 after going 2 for 32 in his previous 10 contests. He's 7 for 17 with two home runs against Carrasco.

Danny Duffy (8-11, 2.42 ERA) will pitch for the first time since Sept. 6, when he exited after one pitch against the Yankees due to a sore shoulder. He had been 3-3 with a 1.87 ERA in his 10 prior starts.

The left-hander had no issues during a simulated game Tuesday, according to MLB's official website.

"I'm itching to get back out there and get going," Duffy said.

Duffy started the suspended game against Cleveland, giving up one earned run in 6 2-3 innings. He's 1-1 with a 3.09 ERA in six career games against the Indians, including five starts.

Six of Mike Moustakas' 15 home runs this season have come against Cleveland.

Pirates starting series in fine form for backers

The Pittsburgh Pirates open a four-game series with the Atlanta Braves at Turner Field Monday and they've been a particularly solid wager in series openers of late.

The Bucs have won their previous five series openers heading into Monday evening's game with wins versus the Milwaukee Brewers, Boston Red Sox, Chicago Cubs (twice) and Philadelphia Phillies.

They'll send Francisco Liriano to the hill to face Aaron Harang as -142 road faves in Monday's series opener.

Contagious stomach ailment slows Cards' momentum

                            Wash your hands.

It is a reminder that a parent might give his or her kid after playing outside. However, the placards printed in the St. Louis clubhouse are also a grim reminder of a stomach bug that is ripping through the Cardinals at a most inopportune time.

During St. Louis' 7-2 loss to the Cincinnati Reds on Sunday night, manager Mike Matheny estimated that "north of 10 players" were unavailable. The list included first baseman Matt Adams and third baseman Matt Carpenter, as well as several relief pitchers.

Matheny said it affected how he used his bullpen in the eighth inning, when he went with either struggling or little-used options. Left-hander Kevin Siegrist walked the first two hitters, and right-hander Sam Tuivailala, making his second big league appearance, yielded a game-clinching, three-run homer to Devin Mesoraco on his second pitch.

With six games left in the season, St. Louis leads the Pittsburgh Pirates by 2 1/2 games in the National League Central. However, that lead is no sure thing, given the Cardinals' poor health and the fact that St. Louis will leave players behind for the start of a season-ending road trip Monday night when they meet the Chicago Cubs in Wrigley Field.

The Cardinals clinched a playoff spot earlier Sunday when the Pirates beat the Milwaukee Brewers 1-0, but St. Louis wants to avoid the NL wild-card game.

"We've got to try to get everyone healthy as soon as possible," Cardinals infielder Daniel Descalso said. "I wish they weren't sick, but things happen. Hopefully, we can get this disease out of the clubhouse soon."

Braves' Minor shut down with balky shoulder

Mike Minor's season started late and ended early. A balky shoulder was the issue both times.

"It's very frustrating," the Atlanta Braves left-hander said. "But I guess on the positive side, it's hopefully nothing and I can get it taken care of this offseason and I won't go into spring training behind like I did this year."

Minor had to leave after one inning against the New York Mets on Saturday and the run he allowed dropped his record 6-12. His ERA is 4.77 over 25 starts and he has 120 strikeouts to 44 walks in 145 1/3 innings.

The 26-year-old former first-round draft pick bounced back late in August after being skipped a start, but was never the same pitcher who went 13-9 with a 3.21 ERA last year.

"Same thing," said Minor, when asked if the pain in his shoulder Saturday was similar to what he experienced in spring training. "... I feel like it's not anything serious but it's nagging pain that won't go away. It's there every pitch. The last couple starts I felt it a little bit more and more."

Minor said he knew something wasn't right in the bullpen before facing the Mets.

"I could tell in warmups," he said. "But I thought maybe it would get a little bit better as I threw my bullpen or even in the first inning and you get that extra adrenalin and it kind of goes away. Tonight it didn't. Every pitch I could feel something. When I came in, they pretty much said, That's it."

MLB Early-week betting cheat sheet: Happ a strong Under play
                                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Here’s a comprehensive look at betting notes for the early-week major league games:

                                Padres Bucking Over Trend

The San Diego Padres (-113, O 7) continued their late-season Over trend Sunday with an 8-2 home drubbing of the San Francisco Giants. The Padres (59-91-5 O/U) still have the fewest Overs in the majors, but are a stunning 7-3 O/U in their last 10 games.

                                What’s Happ-ening?

Toronto Blue Jays left-hander J.A. Happ is one of the strongest Under plays of late heading into Monday’s showdown with the visiting Seattle Mariners (-115, 8). Happ has recorded six consecutive Unders and is 1-8-1 O/U in his last 10 starts.

                                Marlins Showing Brotherly Love

The Miami Marlins have enjoyed their visits from the Philadelphia Phillies this season as the National League East rivals do battle Tuesday night. Miami is 4-2 SU and 4-1-1 O/U in six home meetings with the Phillies so far in 2014.

                                Pitching Notes

                                * Bet against Adam Wainwright at your peril. The St. Louis Cardinals ace is 10-6 with a 1.82 ERA in 17 road starts going into Monday’s tilt with host Chicago (+171, 7); the Cubs did, however, torch him for six runs over five innings in a home win May 2.

                                * Miami right-hander Henderson Alvarez looks to secure a top-five spot in pitcher values this season as the Marlins tangle with the visiting Phillies on Tuesday. Alvarez ranks fourth among starters at $1,148, with Miami going 19-9 in his starts.

                                Hitting Notes

                                * A pair of Los Angeles Dodgers have caught fire at the right time. Matt Kemp is hitting .333 with three home runs and 10 RBIs over the past seven days, while first baseman Adrian Gonzalez is batting .333 with two homers and nine RBIs over the same span.

                                * All eyes will be on Chicago lefty Chris Sale and Detroit slugger Victor Martinez as the White Sox visit the Tigers. Martinez is hitting a scorching 15-for-28 lifetime versus Sale, with three home runs, six walks and eight RBIs.

                                Totals Streak

Minnesota Twins (7-1 O/U): The Twins are a strong bet to finish with the most Overs in the American League following their latest stretch in which they’ve surrendered four or more runs in eight of their last nine games. The Twins are 84-66-5 O/U for the year.

                                Prop of the Day

Bettors may want to consider taking the Seattle Mariners to defeat the Toronto Blue Jays by exactly one run (+550). Six of Happ’s last 10 starts have been decided by a run, with the Blue Jays going 2-4 in those games.

                                Injury Notes

                                * The Tampa Bay Rays have announced that outfielder Desmond Jennings will miss the remainder of the season with a left knee injury. Jennings hasn’t played since Aug. 28 - a stretch during which the Rays have gone 10-12 SU, 10-10-2 O/U and -511 units.

                                * Detroit Tigers catcher Alex Avila is expected to rejoin the club shortly as he makes his way back from a concussion. Avila has missed 17 games this season, with the Tigers going 11-6 SU, 9-8 O/U and +373 units in those contests.

                                Weather Watch

                                * Wind at Turner Field will blow in from center field at 7 mph for Monday’s tilt between the host Braves (+129, 6.5) and Pittsburgh. teams combined to hit .229 with 1.38 home runs in eight games under similar conditions in 2013 - well below stadium averages.
