    Armadillo: Saturday's six-pack

-- Seahawks cut QB Terrelle Pryor, whose career never took off, mainly because he didn't stay in college long enough to develop his skills.

-- Bills signed QB Kyle Orton, a red flag for their offense.

-- Syracuse 27, Villanova 26 OT--- Orange QB got tossed in first half after he punched a Villanova defender.

-- Texas Rangers used their 59th different player Friday, tying a modern record.

-- Angels 4, A's 0-- Oakland was 66-41 when they made the Cespedes/Lester deal; they're 12-15 since then. Very disappointing.

-- Texas Tech signed football coach Kliff Kimgsbury to an extension thru 2020-- what are the odds he lasts in Lubbock until then?

    **********

Armadillo: Saturday's List of 13: Clearing out a cluttered mind.........

    13) If you like to surf the web, I’ve got a good website for you (for AFTER you read this one :-)) . Fivethirtyeight.com, they’ve got a mixture of sports and politics, lot of smart people who write about interesting topics. I think you’ll enjoy it.

    12) Wonder if anyone at Duke University (quietly) wishes Mike Krzyzewski would spend more time on campus at Duke and less time circling the globe coaching Team USA in these FIBA tournaments. I’m just askin’

    11) Suspended WR Josh Gordon cannot play in the CFL this season unless the Browns were to release him, which they’ll never do. Clear-cut rule about CFL not signing NFL players who are under contract and suspended.

    10) Why was Sammy Watkins playing Thursday night, if he has bad ribs? Why was he playing, if he didn’t have bad ribs? It’s the fourth exhibition game; no one of value plays in those games.

    9) Speaking of which, Tom Brady did get on the field for the Patriots Thursday, but only to hold for kicks. Would he be the greatest player of the last 35 years (probably since Joe Theismann) to hold for kicks?

    8) David Price has had three games this season where he got 30+ called strikes; there have been only 20 of these games all season and Price has three of them, which helps explain why Bronx beat him pretty badly earlier this week.

Last time he pitched against New York, Price got 33 called strikes, so obviously this time, the Bombers were determined to be more aggressive against Price and they wound up getting nine straight hits in an 8-run inning against him.

    7) That said, you have to be damned good to give up nine straight hits; who else would be allowed to stay in a game that long, other than a really good pitcher?

    6) Nebraska (28) and Florida State (24) have the longest active winning streaks in college football season openers.

    5) University of Maryland will be selling pretzels at their football games that weigh 1.5 pounds; must be a lot of salt on them. Who can eat a 24-ounce pretzel?

    4) If Kevin Sumlin wants to be an NFL head coach, you have to think his chance is around the corner; the way Kenny Hill played Thursday, in his first college start, after Sumlin coached Case Keenum and Johnny Manziel—the man has produced some prodigious offenses, for sure. NFL is going to come calling this winter.

    3) I’ve never eaten in a Waffle House, but I want to one day; was at one in Florida once, but just before we got seated, the lone waitress got in a screaming match with the manager, threw her apron at him and quit. I looked at my buddy and we trudged off to some other bad food place, waffle-less. They’re all over the south, so next time I’m down that way I’ll get my waffles.

    2) Daniel Snyder wants the Redskins to get a new stadium; good luck with funding for that, while he battles to keep the team’s name intact. His current stadium is only 17 years old, so he’s also being a greedy bastard, wanting a new building when the one he has is perfectly fine. Maybe that’s how you get rich, just keep being greedy.

    1) Milwaukee ace Yovani Gallardo got 15 misses on 53 swings in a game at Wrigley earlier this month, but in three starts since, he’s only gotten eight misses on 139 swings, which is a big red flag. He didn’t have a strikeout in San Diego Wednesday; you have to wonder if he is healthy. If he isn’t, that’s bad news for the Brew Crew.

      Harvick snags pole at Atlanta

HAMPTON, Ga. -- NASCAR's new qualifying knockout format -- not to mention the quality of his race cars -- certainly agrees with Kevin Harvick.

Fastest in the qualifying round that counted, the final five-minute session on Friday at Atlanta Motor Speedway, Harvick put his No. 4 Stewart-Haas Racing Chevrolet on the pole for Sunday night's Oral-B USA 500 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race with a lap at 190.398 mph.

The pole was Harvick's sixth of the season, matching the total he accumulated in the first 13 seasons of his Sprint Cup career. It was Harvick's first pole at the 1.54-mile intermediate speedway, following top qualifying efforts at Darlington, Kansas, Michigan, Indianapolis and Bristol earlier this year.

Brad Keselowski took the second position on the grid with a lap at 190.058 mph. Rookie Kyle Larson (189.883 mph) qualified third on pavement he termed "a whole new level of worn out," a characteristic drivers tend to favor.

Ryan Newman (189.396 mph) will start fourth, followed by Matt Kenseth 188.996 mph) and Martin Truex Jr. (188.918 mph). Aric Almirola set the fastest lap of the evening in the first round (191.278 mph) but slipped to seventh in the last session.

Tony Stewart, returning to action after a three-race hiatus in the wake of his involvement in a fatal Sprint Car accident Aug. 9 at Canandaigua (N.Y.) Speedway, qualified 12th but helped Harvick with advice on his racing line before the final two runs.

"He told me to go back to the way I was practicing and used to getting around the racetrack," said Harvick, who had tried to run Stewart's preferred line in the first round and failed to find the rhythm. "It was definitely the right decision."

For Harvick this year, qualifying has clearly been a point of emphasis, and his results reflect it.

"The qualifying stuff has obviously been a major focus of what we've done," Harvick said. "I think it's kept us in a lot of races where we were off a little bit and gave us an advantage on pit road.

" ... (Crew chief) Rodney (Childers) and the guys focus a lot on qualifying, and I think that when you're able to push the cars and feel comfortable with it like you can right now, it obviously gives me a lot of confidence. It's been a lot of fun. Obviously, it's not something I've done in my career (before this year)."

Keselowski's qualifying effort was his best ever at the track.

"That's a testament to the team and the work they've done and trying to be better," Keselowski said. "We're having a phenomenal season, but I just wish it had been one more spot instead of second place."

      NOTES:
Matt Kenseth led the 10-minute second round with a lap at 190.883 mph. Speeds slowed with each session because of tire wear on the abrasive asphalt. ... Michael McDowell failed to make the 43-car field. ... The Oral-B USA 500 is the 25th race of the regular season. The field for the 2014 Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup will be set next weekend at Richmond.

This team not happy to see Miller calling pitches

The Toronto Blue Jays are just 1-7 in their last eight ball games when umpire Bill Miller is working behind home plate.

That's bad news for the Jays and their backers as Miller is scheduled to be in that role for Saturday's game against the New York Yankees at Rogers Centre in Toronto.

The Yanks are slated to send Michael Pineda to the bump, while the Jays will counter with Drew Hutchison. Oddsmakers have tabbed the Yankees as -123 road favorites for the matchup.
