    Armadillo: Friday's six-pack

-- Texas A&M 52, South Carolina 28-- Kenny Hill threw for 511 yards in his first college start, with three TDs. Gamecocks had won 18 in a row at home.

-- UL-Monroe 17, Wake Forest 10-- ULM beats Deacons for second year in row; rough start to the Dave Clawson era for Wake.

-- Ole Miss 35, Boise State 13-- Why did Boise wear uniforms that looked like Syracuse? They played like Syracuse-- no bueno.

-- Buffalo signed backup QB Jordan Palmer, recently cut by the Bears. Bills play Chicago in Week One; coincidence?

-- Peyton Manning was fined $8,268 for taunting a Houston opponent last week; would be curious at how they arrived at that round number.

-- Yusmiero Petit set a big league record when he retired 46 straight batters over his last seven appearances- thats an underrated record that was previously held by Mark Buehrle, who had a perfect game in middle of his streak.

    **********

Armadillo: Friday's List of 13: Things I'm looking for this weekend.......

    13) Georgia-Clemson is too good a game to be played on August 30, but TV networks want good programming every week. Hard to believe that prior to last year, these old rivals went 10 years without playing.

    12) NFL teams will make final cuts this weekend; lesser teams will pick up guys the better teams cut. Starting QB’s will be chosen, as Opening Day of the NFL season rapidly approaches.

    11) My fantasy football draft is Sunday, as I try and atone for last year’s dismal performance, in my first foray into fantasy football in over 20 years. Hopefully I won’t go thru seven QB’s again this season.

    10) QB situation at Alabama will be interesting; McElroy/McCarron won a ton of games between them the last few years, but now a new guy will be under center. No clear-cut #1 quarterback emerged from summer camp.

    9) Baltimore Orioles need to make hay at home against the Twins; if Buck Showalter doesn’t win AL Manager of the Year, we need an investigation.

    8) Washington goes to Hawai’i in Chris Petersen’s first game as Huskies’ coach, but without starting QB Miles (suspended). Not good to get suspended from the Hawai’I trip. Petersen was 92-12 at Boise State; curious to see how he does following Steve Sarkisian at U-Dub.

    7) Tennessee is only team in America with no returning starters on either the offensive or defensive line; they host a Utah State squad that is 15-4 vs spread as a road underdog, and has a Tennessee transfer as a starting CB.

    6) Felix Hernandez lasted less than six innings in each of his last two starts, then had this start pushed back to Friday night; is he healthy? Seattle’s playoff push is obviously very dependent on his good health.

    5) What genius decided that Central Florida-Penn State would be an 8:30am kickoff on Saturday? Why play in Ireland? Game was supposed to be head coaches O’Leary vs O’Brien, but that got messed up when O'Brien went to the NFL.

    4) Marlins go to Atlanta as they try to stay in Wild Card race. Moving Marcell Ozuna to #4 slot, right behind Giancarlo Stanton, hasn’t been a success yet this week, for either guy.

    3) LSU-Wisconsin is bigger game for Badgers, as Big 14 teams try to show they’re on a par with SEC/Pac 12 teams (they’re not). Les Miles doesn’t have much experience at QB, but he has two guys who can play.

    2) Bartolo Colon is scheduled to pitch for the Mets Saturday, while Angels don’t have a starting pitcher listed for Saturday. Will Colon be an Angel by the time you read this?

    1) A’s-Angels is obviously a big series this weekend in AL West race. Oakland hasn’t hit much lately, and their infield defense has been spotty without Lowrie at SS. Angels are going to miss Garrett Richards every fifth day, for sure.

Two chances remain to qualify for Chase

The formula for making NASCAR's postseason under the new Chase format is easy.

      Win and you're in.

A driver can get into the Chase through points, but a victory alleviates any concern of missing out.

With two races left in the regular season, 12 different winners have clinched berths in the Chase. Of the winless drivers, Matt Kenseth and Ryan Newman can feel somewhat comfortable, sitting 83 and 42 points ahead of the cutoff, respectively. But the same can't be said for Clint Bowyer and Greg Biffle, who man the 15th and 16th final slots. Bowyer (+31) and Biffle (+26) lead 17th-place Kyle Larson in points but have to be worried about a winless driver currently outside the grid ousting them from the Chase.

Biffle relayed this sentiment before Bristol last week when discussing whether he should be cautious to retain his points lead or go for wins.

"You take chances, make passes, do all the things you can do," Biffle said. "But at the same time, we know we're on the bubble in points. I feel it's going to take a win still to get in this thing, and that's what we're going for."

Prime off-the-grid candidates that can punch their ticket into the Chase with a win in Sunday's Oral-B USA 500 at Atlanta (7:30 p.m. ET on ESPN) include Larson, Kasey Kahne and Jamie McMurray.

"I hope we can go there and get a win and stop worrying about points," said Larson, who boasts a fifth-place finish in one NASCAR Nationwide Series appearance at Atlanta but has yet to make his NASCAR Sprint Cup debut there. "I think 26 behind Biffle is a long way to go for two races. Hope for some bad luck for him, but we will see."

Kahne might pose the biggest threat, having won at Atlanta twice. A Chase veteran, he has big-race experience and drives for Hendrick Motorsports, which has produced the most powerful engines in the series this year.

"I think all of us communicating and working together, it's been better for the last month, month-and-a-half than what it was earlier in the season," Kahne said. "We just have to do the same thing, but we need to max our points each weekend and go for wins. Hopefully between one of those we can work our way in."

He's coming home: Georgia native Elliott eyes victory at Atlanta

Chase Elliott's young racing career has taken him across the country from the beaches of Daytona to the deserts of Phoenix and even over the border to Canada, where he announced his presence to the NASCAR world as the then youngest victor of a national series event.

Ironically, the 18-year-old wunderkind has never competed at Atlanta Motor Speedway, a track located 80 miles south of his hometown of Dawsonville, Ga.

In fact, the only time he has even taken a motor vehicle out on the track was when he took Great Clips customers for a spin in a pace car in July.

He will finally get the chance to race in front of his hometown crowd in Saturday's Great Clips 300 Benefiting Feed the Children (7:30 p.m. ET, ESPN 2).

"It's always exciting to race around home, and anytime you can do that it's definitely one of the places you want to shine," Elliott said. "There's no question this is one of the dates I've been most excited for all season long. Who doesn't want to do well in front of their friends and family? I'm really looking forward to the weekend. This will be big."

Even bigger than the chance to put on a show for his friends and family is the opportunity for Elliott to further strengthen his hold on the top of the NASCAR Nationwide Series standings. At the moment, he leads teammate Regan Smith and fellow Sunoco Rookie of the Year contender Ty Dillon by 13 and 30 points, respectively. Even after a streak of four top-10 finishes in five races following his victory at Chicago -- including a third-place performance last week at Bristol -- he has only been able to increase his advantage over Smith by six points.

"Unfortunately, I don't think my pace car laps last month count as 'experience' at Atlanta, so I don't really know what to expect," Elliott said. "I have a lot of good information to lean on through my teammates and crew chief at JR Motorsports, and that's what I plan to do until I'm able to turn some laps myself. It's a historic track. I've been there many times, so I'm really looking forward to finally racing on it."

Truck Series returns to Canada for second tilt

Last season, the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series made its inaugural visit to Canada, providing high-octane entertainment and making history for all those involved.

Chase Elliot shook Ty Dillon on the final lap at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park in the trucks' first go-around at a road course since 2000 to become the youngest winner in NASCAR national series history (17 years and nine months) -- a record broken two months later by NASCAR Next member Erik Jones (17 years, five months, nine days).

In the NCWTS' return to Canada for Sunday's Chevrolet Silverado 250 (1:30 p.m. ET, Fox Sports 1), history can be written again, possibly by the young prospects of NASCAR or the quartet of Canadians making their truck series debuts.

John Hunter Nemechek (17 years and two months) and NASCAR Next members Gray Gaulding (16 years and six months) and Cole Custer (16 years and seven months) are all candidates to break Jones' record for youngest race winner.

Momentum is on Nemechek and Custer's side after respective sixth and eighth-place finishes at Bristol, but Gaulding might have the strategy down pat after competing in two NASCAR K&N Pro Series road course races this month.

"I have always loved road racing and when the schedule came out and I knew I could run this race I was pumped," Gaulding said. "It's extremely fast and very technical."

First-time truck series entrants Alex Tagliani, Ray Courtemanche Jr., Cameron Hayley or Andrew Ranger could become just the third Canadian winner in NASCAR national series history and the first since Ron Fellows came up victorious in the 2008 NAPA Auto Parts 200 at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve in Montreal.

Of the four, Ranger has the most NASCAR national series experience with 17 starts on the Nationwide circuit and one appearance in Sprint Cup action. No stranger to Canadian Tire Motorsport Park, he owns two wins, five top-five and six top-10 finishes in seven starts on the 10-turn track as a competitor in NASCAR's Canadian Tire Series.

Stewart to return for Atlanta race

Tony Stewart will race this weekend at Atlanta Motor Speedway, ending a three-week absence from the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series after he struck and killed Kevin Ward Jr. during a sprint car race in upstate New York.

Stewart-Haas Racing made the announcement Thursday.

"Tony Stewart has received all the necessary clearances required to return to all racing activities and therefore is eligible to compete this weekend at Atlanta Motor Speedway," said Steve O'Donnell, NASCAR's executive vice president and chief racing development officer. "NASCAR has remained in constant contact with his race team and we will stay very close to this situation as Stewart returns to competition."

Stewart has remained in seclusion since the Aug. 9 incident at Canandaigua Motorsports Park in upstate New York. Ontario County (N.Y.) Sheriff Philip Povero announced Aug. 12 that his department was investigating the 20-year-old Ward's death, but there have been no updates since then.

The 43-year-old Stewart is scheduled to speak at a news conference at 1 p.m. Friday at Atlanta Motor Speedway, followed by NASCAR president Mike Helton at 2 p.m.

Stewart, a three-time Sprint Cup champion, has yet to qualify for the season-ending Chase for the championship and would need a win in either of the final two races of the regular season and a waiver to be eligible.

Jeff Burton filled in for Gordon as the driver of the No. 14 Chevrolet the past two weeks at Michigan and at Bristol Motor Speedway, finishing 37th and 15th, respectively.

Since Ward's death, NASCAR implemented rules that require a driver to stay in the car after a crash until safety officials arrive on the scene. Ward exited his car after a wreck and walked up the track toward Stewart's moving car, which hit him.

Sunday's NASCAR Sprint Cup race at Atlanta (7:30 p.m. ET, ESPN) marks NASCAR's second-to-last regular-season race.

Game of the Day: Redblacks at Alouettes
          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ottawa Redblacks at Montreal Alouettes (-6, 46)

Something has to give when the Montreal Alouettes host the Ottawa Redblacks on Friday. The Redblacks are mired in a five-game losing streak and the only team in the league with a longer streak of futility is the Alouettes, who have lost six in a row. Despite these slides, both teams still have a realistic shot at the playoffs in the weak East Division.

Montreal could finally have some stability at quarterback after Jonathan Crompton stepped in with a 266-yard performance against the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, but Crompton also threw three interceptions and will need to be more accurate if he hopes to hang on to the job. Ottawa’s offense has been even worse than the Alouettes’, recording 15 points over its last two games and managing 46 over its last four. Redblacks quarterback Henry Burris has five touchdown tosses in 2014, putting him on pace for his lowest total as a starter.

          TV:
          7:30 p.m. ET, TSN

          LINE HISTORY:
The LV Superbook opened the Als as 5.5-point home favorites. They moved to -6.5 before dropping down to -6. The total opened at 47 and has dropped to 46.

          INJURY REPORT:
Redblacks - DB Jovon Johnson (Questionable, bicep). Alouettes - Chad Johnson (Probably, concussion), Marc-Oliver Brouillette (Questionable, upper body).

          ABOUT THE REDBLACKS (1-7):
Ottawa lost backup quarterback Thomas DeMarco to a season-ending ACL injury when DeMarco replaced Burris in the fourth quarter in Week 9. Rookie Antoine Pruneau is quickly becoming the most exciting Redblacks player with 24 tackles in three contests as a starter and a pass deflection that led to an interception touchdown last week. Chevon Walker is tied for third in the league with 421 rushing yards.

          ABOUT THE ALOUETTES (1-7):
Alex Brink will back up Crompton while Troy Smith remains on the six-game injured list. Brandon Whitaker is second in the league with 431 rushing yards. John Bowman leads the team with seven sacks but has just two in four games since Montreal’s Week 5 bye week.

          TRENDS:

          * Under is 5-0 in Alouettes last five vs. East.
          * RedBlacks are 1-4 ATS in their last five games overall.
          * Alouettes are 0-4 ATS in their last four Friday games.
          * Under is 10-2 in Alouettes last 12 games overall.

          CONSENSUS:
According to Consensus, 56 percent of wagers are on the Alouettes.

MLB Weekend betting cheat sheet: O's dominate Consensus
                      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Here's a comprehensive look at betting notes for the weekend major-league games:

                      NL East Pushes Again

The Atlanta Braves and New York Mets preserved the NL East's reputation as the league's most push-centric division Thursday, with the Braves (-109, P 7) cruising to a 6-1 victory. Four of the six teams in the majors with double-digit pushes reside in the NL East, led by the Mets with 15.

                      Orioles the Consensus Fave

The red-hot Baltimore Orioles (-185, 9) are a heavy favorite in Friday's game against visiting Minnesota, and readers believe in them. The Orioles have the most support of any team in our Consensus, with 76 percent of voters selecting them to win.

                      Dueling First-Timers

A pair of pitchers will make their major-league debuts Saturday when the Detroit Tigers visit the Chicago White Sox. The Tigers will send left-hander Kyle Ryan to the hill, while the White Sox counter with right-hander Chris Bassitt.

                      Pursuit of Happ-iness

Toronto lefty J.A. Happ looks to reverse an ugly trend Sunday as the Blue Jays finish up a weekend set with the New York Yankees. The Blue Jays have lost each of Happ's last five starts, though they haven't done him any favors - they've scored a total of nine runs in those games, resulting in a 1-4 O/U mark.

                      Pitching Notes

                      * Blue Jays southpaw Mark Buehrle has been a strong value for the majority of the season entering Friday's tilt with the Yankees (-112, 9). Buehrle ranks fifth in the majors at $1,064, but may be in tough Friday - he's just 1-12 with a 6.15 ERA in 19 career starts against New York.

                      * Athletics righty Jeff Samardzija has done a "total" reversal since joining Oakland near the trade deadline. Samardzija is 7-3 O/U in 10 starts with the A's going into Saturday's showdown with the host Angels; the 29-year-old was 7-10 O/U in 17 starts with the Cubs to open the season.

                      * Houston lefty Dallas Keuchel puts a five-game Under streak on the line Sunday as the Astros entertain the rival Texas Rangers. Keuchel has allowed three runs or fewer in seven of his last eight starts overall, contributing to a 1-7 O/U mark in that span.

                      Hitting Notes

                      * Few players have had a worse week than Astros third baseman Matt Dominguez, who is 1-for-15 with eight strikeouts over the last seven days. Dominguez will try to turn things around Friday night when Houston (-129, 8.5) faces Scott Baker and the Rangers.

                      * It could be a good day for Miami hitters as they face Aaron Harang and the Atlanta Braves on Saturday. Members of the Marlins roster are a combined .370 with a .409 OBP, a .591 slugging percentage and six homers in 154 at-bats versus Harang.

                      * Clay Buchholz vs. Evan Longoria will be a matchup to monitor Sunday afternoon when Buchholz's Red Sox tangle with Longoria's Rays. Longoria is just 7-for-34 lifetime against Buchholz, with one RBI and 13 strikeouts.

                      Totals Streak

Atlanta Braves (1-5-2 O/U): An offense that had scored three runs or fewer in six of its previous seven games finally broke out Thursday night versus the Mets, racking up 13 hits against a quartet of New York pitchers. Atlanta is 53-70-11 O/U for the season, the second-best Under mark in the NL.

                      Prop of the Day

It doesn't pay well, but betting against the Astros and Rangers going to extra innings (-1,200) could work out nicely. The Rangers have played the fewest extra-inning games in all of baseball (seven), while the Astros are close behind with just 10 extra-inning contests.

                      Injury Notes

                      * The Mets have placed second baseman Daniel Murphy on the 15-day disabled list with a right calf strain. New York has struggled in Murphy's absence so far in 2014, going 1-5 SU, 2-3-1 O/U and -359 units with him out of the lineup.

                      * The Cardinals are expected to activate catcher Yadier Molina from the disabled list in time for Friday's game against the visiting Cubs (+133, 7.5).
